An Hysterical Event On 20 January, REDSTAR is proud to bring four members of the original cast of Whose Line is it Anyway? (and one equally-talented 'newcomer') to Qingdao for one night only!

The format began in 1988, and shortly afterwards it aired on BBC Radio. It took just six episodes before making the move to television, with the producers guaranteed a second series before the first had even aired.

If you watched television in the '90s, you know that this groundbreaking programme is synonymous with improvisational comedy. Rather than a single comic delivering a series of rehearsed jokes, these comics play games that tailor hilarious scenarios to suggestions from the audience. Give them the title of a film, an awkward situation and your favourite musical genre and they'll give you a song-and-dance routine that will have you rolling in the aisles.

By its fifth series, local comedy clubs became popular places for comedians to begin practicing improvisational talent. One of these groups was The Comedy Store Players, which nurtured young performers who have since reached legendary status in UK television. It was during this period that the most successful of Whose Line performers made their debuts.

An Historic Performance Improvisational comedy was a hugely popular niche of comedy through the 80s and 90s, largely due to the success of the Whose Line productions. While on television, the show was a stepping stone for comedians to go between small comedy clubs and mainstream popularity. Its performers still guarantee a packed house in the comedy clubs of London and New York.

One of a rare breed of comedy show to succeed on both sides of the Atlantic, Whose Line moved stateside in 1998. The televised version was cancelled in the UK that same year, but continued in the US until 2006. Reruns of both versions of the show occupy a constantly rotating circuit on cable networks in both countries, and the format has been repackaged and sent around the world. The original Whose Line continues with weekly slots at London's Comedy Store, when it's not in Qingdao.

Putting the spotlight on local talent this month, REDSTAR Live will host a battle of the bands. This group have been around town and regular features at REDSTAR's Unplugged open mic night for the last year. The foursome, hailing from Japan, are an eclectic mixture of heavy metal guitar solos and late 60s-early 70s pastiche, with Morimoto Norikazu's ripping, effects-laden riffs lying an odd background to Mori Eiji's subdued, relaxed vocals.

Victorious War

Taidong heavy metal stalwarts, Victorious War are perhaps more recognisable as the team behind the Rolling Stone Music Store, and when they are not rocking Qingdao to its core (though by their own admission they haven't played a great many live shows lately), they are providing the town with its premier source of guitar equipment, and using their lofty skills to educate the younger generation in the ways of shred guitar solos and the double bass drum. "Pisspot Punkers," whose, "Fratrock peppered with wah-wah riffs," has been making ripples across Shandong recently return to REDSTAR Live after supporting Canada's Hollerado and Immaculate Machine on their China tours last month. Probably the most talented band on display, BuTFuNK is the latest project of long-term expatriate, Marc Montebello (formerly lead guitarist with The BillKillers), a group whose perpetually rotating members have included almost every expat (and local) in town that claims to be a musician. This is a group for whom the emphasis is on producing a perfect sound, no matter which genre they are replicating. The combination of Marc's phrasing, with recent arrival Russell Clinton's fluid basslines and Kel's vocals, and perennially performing Liang Dong, a drum instructor at Qingdao Kaiwen Modern Music School, is one of the local music scene's most awe-inspiring experiences. Douban 豆瓣 Douban is a hugely popular social networking site in China, fusing the user-friendly interface of Facebook with the focus on entertainment that Myspace has for artists and musicians in the western world. The first time I discovered Douban, I was on vacation in a city I'd never been too, I needed desperately to find something to do, so I searched online for some events. That's the important part of this website - it's a China-wide resource for finding things going on in major cities. If you want to know what's going on around you, their feature, IN TOWN will offer you a comprehensive service. The function HOST lists people and groups who often organise or set up events (for example bars, concert halls and so on). The site is extremely user-friendly (if you can read Chinese that is), easy to setup and will attract more people in town to join in and focus on events and activities organised by different groups. Like we make friends in real life, friends on Douban are also linked by associated interests and tastes. Douban offers services to link people with similar interests in books, movies, music and more. These categories can record what you're 'planning to read/ watch/listen', 'currently reading/watching/listening' or 'have read/watched/listened to', and then you can make your own comments on them, and get more friends defined by these opinions, and get to know your favourite media more comprehensively by your peers' comments. 'Artists' is the Myspacelike public space for bands, musicians, filmmakers, writers and so on, and you can apply for an Artist page to publish your original material. Plus the site features BBS and message board services, so whenever you schedule an event you can invite your fans to enjoy it! The newest little tool, 'Douban Audio Station' is great idea on this web site - with this, you can mark your favourites and least favourites by Liking them, Never again-ing them or Jumping over them to record. The intelligent system will pick up on your opinions from this data and learn your tastes, and can be set to give you even a 24-hour continual personal music service, and the more you record the more you can enjoy it. I SAY is popular microblog within Douban, which can be used to do short-sentence diaries like Twitter. Every piece of news about musicians and artists, subjects, event and so on, that you've focussed on, will be broadcast on your main page. Douban's personal spaces include a Diary, a Photo Album, discussion and comment functionality, Recommendations, and Message Boards. You can even link your existing blog to Douban, enabling you to expand the audience that views your messages, by putting it in a web space that is accessed by a much larger number of people. Douban is the Chinese equivalent of Myspace and Stumbleupon. The difference is however, that there is no writer or special correspondent for the articles in Douban. It's user-driven content allows for a greater number of opinions, whilst the people behind it are free to concentrate on improving the user experience, and to create better methods of analysing the data of who clicks on what, who likes which artist and so on. It offers a neutral platform for people to share and discover, then records the data, and rewards the regular user with a bounty of new culture to investigate.

广告·运动 regulars sport 13 myredstar.com myredstar.com 广告·文化 9 Imagine relaxing out under deep blue skies, surrounded by white ski slopes and leafless aspen trees, a crispy margherita pizza sits in front of you accompanied by a steamy warm glass of German glühwein (red wine served with spices). Where might you be? If you guessed the Dolomites of northern Italy, well... not too far off, but then you also have the grill man flipping around some chuanr rou kebabs next to you. That's right, you are at Duolemeidi (appropriately, the Mandarin transliteration of the Dolomites) Mountain Resort, 226 kilometres northwest of Beijing. Late last winter we checked out some of the less impressive (basically just flat) ski slopes closer to Qingdao (see sidebar), but this past December REDSTAR and Shan Shui inspected one of China's newest and only foreign-invested ski areas for the 9th International Chongli Ski Festival. Free skipasses were offered to all who could make the trek, along with the promise of great snow and terrific times. Duolemeidi opened a few years ago through a three-way partnership between Italianheadquartered Leitner (one of the world's most prestigious ski-lift manufacturers ), the founders of Dolomiti Superski (a conglomerate of about 50 ski resorts in the East Dolomites of northern Italy), and the government of Hebei Province. WIth peaks rising above 2000m and snow cover lasting for around 150 days, the ski season usually runs well in to March. There are two slopes over 1,500 metres long, more than 8,000 meters of carvable powder amongst all seven slopes, and then plans to develop another 17,000 metres within the next few

years. Leitner equipped Duolemeidi with China's first high-speed six-seat chair-lift, so shredders can maximise their ski time in comfort (good call on the wind-protection shield). Waiting times should be minimal even on a busy day and the plan is to install six more lifts in addition to the present three. Top-of-the-line Rossignol skis and snowboards are available for rent, and there's world-class maintenance equipment if your gear is in need of a shave-and-polish at the end of the day. They also have a large grooming machine that keeps the pearly slopes smooth all day. Finally, the antibacterial boot dryers are a nice detail. If you can find time to make it during the week (note: Chinese New Year) ladies can ski for free. I-Snow 爱雪, located right in the middle of town, offers shuttle services from Beijing and to the slopes, as well as a foot massage centre for relieving those aches and pains at the end of the day. For a more luxurious option, a supposed five-star lodge called Rongchen International Holiday Hotel 容辰国际假日酒店 was very attractive from the outside, with a cabinesque style. There are also many small family-owned hotels if you're looking to save some bills, and willing to rough it. With a small river running through the centre of town and beautiful yellowearth hills surrounding, don't be surprised to see Chongli become the Aspen/Kitzbühel of China within the next few years. Getting there There is usually a bus leaving from Beijing's 3rd Ring Road on Friday nights and returning Sunday evening. The ride lasts more than three hours and depends on traffic. Duolemeidi can also help arrange private transporation buses or vans, and it may be cheaper and more convenient to get a group together (see below for contact information). Day trips are not impossible, but Duolemeidi holds its strongest appeal as a weekend trip. You can get the fast train round trip to Beijing for around 600元, or flights can be found for around 800元.

With a huge rise in popularity of adventure sports across China over the past several years, alpine skiing has not been overlooked. Today more than 100 resorts are found across the mainland. Nearby Duolemeidi is Wanlong Ski Resort万龙滑雪场, which supposedly boasts some of the most extensive trails near Beijing and may be a nice second day for advanced skiiers who somehow find themselves getting bored with the accommodating food and services at Duolemeidi. Nanshan is just a couple of hours outside of Beijing and makes for an easier day trip but its proximity also lends it longer lines and crowded slopes. It does appear to attract lots of skillful snowboarders with its small board park.

China's largest ski resort, Yabuli, is located about 200 km southeast of Harbin, so a trip from Qingdao requires setting aside a few days. However not all tea is served in such a formal way; indeed, plenty of Chinese people prefer to enjoy their tea whilst playing Mahjong, cards and simply chatting with friends.

History 茶史 While it is hard to say for how long people have been drinking tea in China exactly, there are written records which mention tea drinking from as long as three thousand years ago. However, the discovery of tea is popularly accredited to the legendary Emperor Shennong who apparently first sampled it in 2737BC when some leaves were blown into his hot water. Given tea’s long history it is understandable that it is a tradition stooped in etiquette and custom. For example, it is polite to tap your first two fingers on the table as a gesture of appreciation and respect to the person who has served you. The origins of this

Ceremony 茶道花絮 Water is heated and poured in and over the teapot, cups and other utensils to warm them up. Once the pot and cups have been sufficiently warmed, leaves are placed in the bottom of the cha'ou (茶⅃/ 盖碗 - gai wan) and water is added. The first brew is discarded, as it serves only to rinse and warm up the leaves. Water is added to the cha'ou for the second time, to about two thirds full. The tea is then served – it can be consumed straight from the cha'ou, but will more usually be poured into a pot and then served into smaller tasting cups. The tasting cups are held between the thumb and first and second finger, and the tea should be consumed in three sips. Since tea is often poured away during the ceremony, the utensils are generally placed on a wooden tea tray, which has holes in it to allow the tea to drain away. There are in fact two main types of tea ceremony, one using the cha'ou, and the other using a small teapot usually made of clay, which is known as the ‘Kung Fu Tea Ceremony’ (功夫茶道). The main types of tea 茗茶的主要种类 Having been around for so long, tea comes in a vast number of varieties. The different types of tea available can roughly be divided into white, green, oolong and red. While different strains of tea plant can of course produce very different drinks, the processing of the leaves after they are picked has the most significant effect on the finished product. Green tea is the most popular tea in China, and is distinctive for its fresh scent and sharp, grassy taste. The leaves are still green because they have not been allowed to oxidise after being picked, meaning that the tea has a limited life after which it will lose its flavour. White tea, like green tea, is not allowed to oxidise, but is wilted slightly after picking, resulting in a gentler taste. It is made up of smaller, younger leaves and even tea buds, and is often among the most expensive of tea available. Oolong tea does undergo partial oxidisation, leaving it somewhere between green and red tea. However it is usually brewed strongly and although it is not as grassy in taste as green tea, it is generally fairly bitter. Red tea has been heavily oxidised through a process of fermentation or baking, and has a strong deep flavour and a high caffeine content. Red tea is most popular in the West, although Pu’er is a variety frequently drunk in China. Tea in your own home 自家茶趣 If you’ve been to a teahouse and enjoyed the experience, you may decide that it’s something you want to recreate in your own home. Luckily this is very easy, and need not be particularly expensive. Qianximingcha teahouse sells a wide range of tea tasting cups, pots and cha'ou, and while some are very expensive, more reasonable sets are available for under ¥150. The second floor of the Jusco supermarket is also a good place to look for tea-bargains; tea trays can be bought for upwards of ¥100, and a set with a cha'ou or teapot and cups can be bought for as little as ¥80. Tea itself can be bought almost anywhere, from supermarkets to the teahouses we have mentioned. Leaves range hugely in price, so it’s probably a good idea to start at the bottom of the price range, find out which types of tea you like, and then perhaps venture towards some more luxury brands.

Teeing off with Liánhuāgémíngchá, you are immediately captured by the dim lighting and delicate incense of the Qing-style interior. You are soon awoken from your reverie by the prices on the menu, which, while appealing presented on a bamboo scroll, are still largely distressing. The wide selection of teas ranges from ¥46 for a cup to a hair-raising ¥1180 to share. However, a pot of high-quality jasmine tea is ¥68, which shared between a group of people, can be very reasonable. The staff are expert, welcoming and very warm, and it’s a genuine pleasure to watch the tea ceremony in the beautiful surroundings, whether you opt for a private room or a table in the main seating area; it’s certainly one of Qingdao’s most atmospheric offerings.

Teahouses are the perfect places for students looking to remember why they started trying to learn Chinese in the first place, and for expats in need of a booster of Chinese culture. Visitors are invited into their own curtained booth, in which the English-speaking, friendly staff are more than willing to perform and explain the tea ceremony, and its historical origins and significance. Tea starts as low as ¥30 a pot, although a large range of teas and prices are available. Fangyuandao is a perfect place to go if you want an introduction to the world of Chinese tea and its history. The surroundings are charming and attractive, and if you’re lucky you might even be treated to some guzheng music while you drink.

All pretentions are left outside at Qipaichashi. Qipaichashi has a regular clientele of keen mahjong players who have come to use the custom rooms and drink the reasonably priced tea. The range is limited to Pu’er, Tie Guanyin and Laoshan Green, at a highly comforting ¥30 per pot. Mahjong rooms can be used for ¥10 or ¥12 an hour per person, little more than the standard tea-room charge. Take three friends and challenge yourselves to master this traditional Chinese game, an integral part of Chinese tea culture. Non-Chinese speakers beware – little English is spoken here, so learn the rules before you leave!

Having the kids home for the holidays can mean having to think of ways to keep them entertained. Well as it so happens, Just High amusement park can do just that! Just High, alternately known as Ocean In Motion Theme Park, located in Zhongshan Park, has over a dozen rides, games, a restaurant and other attractions, making it a perfect way to spend a couple hours with the young ones. The park features thrill rides such as King Kong, resembling a large gravity defying pendulum, spinning and rocking you high in the sky, or family rides such as the double-decker merry-go-round and bumper cars, there are slow rides for the smaller ones such as the mini park monorail, and fast ones for the more advanced riders such as Absolute Deep, a drop tower that’s 24 meters above the ground. The park also features Booty Bay roller coaster, crazy swings and a spooky castle, that takes you on a ghost walk under the sea. If you need to take a break from the rides, there are games to be played, scenic paths around park, recreational fields, and benches to rest your feet. The park has currently cut their pass prices in half until March 15th, 2010 - they are 40元 for riders under 1.4 meters, and 60元 for riders 1.4 meters and above. For those simply accompanying the riders, there is no fee for just walking around the park. This deep-sea themed park takes you on an adventure and away from home for just the right amount of time. The park is open from 9:30am to 5pm during the week and 9am to 5:30pm during the weekend. Restricted Area 古迹忆往昔

Next to Huahui Market in Zhang Village, Donghai Jun 409 is not the kind of place you stumble across by accident, but one and a half years ago, if you did stumble across it, you'd quickly find out you were not welcome. Located in the western hills of Laoshan District, 409 was a restricted military base, with its surrounding hills also off limits to the public. Within the last eighteen months however its status has been changed and one of Qingdao's least known curiosities has become accessible to the general public. Within the base at the easternmost point, isolated by hills on three sides, are two buildings which contain the largest collection of Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) clay carvings of their kind in China. The carvings, collected over the career of retired General Yang, who with his wife still reside at the base, number over 2,000 and represent a wide range of scenarios including war, ancient competition rituals and love stories, among others. The pieces were collected from the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Anhui and Shanxi. A handful of artifacts are located in a ground floor display gallery, with the great majority of the collection situated in a nearby building. This building also contains lodgings where visitors interested in the dynastic history of China can rent a room for night and weekend stays. 青岛市博物馆位于崂山区松岭路附近，昔日为军事禁区，曾作为军事训练用地和医院所用，也曾做收藏历史文物所用。自2008年7月18日起，青岛市博物馆正式免费对外开放。改造后的青岛市博物馆展览面积由原来的3000平方米扩大到近6000平方米，共13个展厅。推出1个反映青岛古代史与近代城市发展脉络的《青岛史话》大型基本陈列和《百工奇技——馆藏古代工艺品艺术陈列》、《彩瓷聚珍——馆藏明清瓷器艺术陈列》、《古钱今说——馆藏古代钱币陈列》、《乡间画记——馆藏山东民间木版年画艺术陈列》、《左臂丹青——高凤翰书画艺术陈列》、《青岛民俗文化展》等6个艺术专题陈列。在公共服务区域设有观众导览中心和观众互动区、资料查询区、资料放映区三个服务区。馆内各类梁柱是一位阳姓退休将军在军旅生涯中精心收集的，柱上的雕刻代表着不同的寓意，涉及战争、竞技比赛、爱情故事和童话传说等。其中最广为人知的故事就是伯乐相马（传说中，天上管理马匹的神仙叫伯乐。在人间，人们把精于鉴别马匹优劣的人，也称为伯乐）镌刻青岛百年沧桑，浓缩华夏五千年文明。

What were the carvings used for? Many were used as support structures, many just for decoration. Are there any other items on display? Yes, numerous assorted artifacts such as pottery vases, a giant stone carving of a fish and Han Dynasty coins. What about the boarding facilities? The smaller gallery, larger storage facility and adjoining restaurant are all open to the public, and the accommodation, while not luxurious, is above what one might expect for the location, with double beds spacious rooms.

The Legend Of Bo Le This legend is one of many depicted in the carvings on the many artifacts at the museum. "In Chinese legend, Bo Le is the god of controlling horses. On Earth, the first person to receive this title was Sun Yang. In the Chun Qiu Dynasty, he was asked by the Emperor of Chu to obtain a swift horse, which were known to be very difficult to find. Sun Yang travelled to several countries, obtaining several horses from breeders, none of whom could provide him with what he needed. One day as he returned home he saw a horse struggling, undernourished, trying to pull his load. After Sun Yang approached, and conversed with the horse, he knew immediately that this was the horse for the Emperor of Chu. He bargained with its master, who would not believe it could be fit for the Emperor. After Sun Yang returned, it took some time to convince the Emperor that it was a real swift horse. After he and the horsemasters had nursed it to health, it turned out to be the best horse in the Emperor's army. Now, we call a gifted person a 'swift horse' and a good judge of talents 'Bo Le'. " 伯乐的传说故事在中国的神话传说中，天上管理马匹的神仙叫伯乐。在人间，春秋时期的孙阳因为擅长识马而被人们冠以“伯乐”的美誉。一天，孙阳受楚王委托寻找人间难寻的千里马（据说千里马能日行千里）。为此，孙阳走访了多个国家，虽然从饲马人手中买了数匹骏马，但它们都不是千里马。一天，伯乐从齐国返回，在路上，看到一匹瘦弱的马拉着盐车，很吃力地在陡坡上行进。马见伯乐走近，突然昂起头来瞪大眼睛，大声嘶鸣，好像要对伯乐倾诉什么。伯乐立即从声音中判断出，这正是楚王要寻找的千里马。于是孙阳请求马主售马，马主很乐意地向孙阳出售此马，因为他根本不相信这匹马是楚王要的千里马。孙阳带马返回宫中，楚王开始也不相信这是一匹千里马。经过一段时间精心饲养后，马变得精壮神骏，成为楚王军队中最强的一匹战马，为楚王驰骋沙场，立下不少战功。如今，人们把有才能的人称作“千里马”，而把善于发现人材的人称作“伯乐”。

Recent years have seen an expansion of Qingdao's Indian dining options, and it's easy to overlook the excellent selection and flavours at the city's first heart of Indian cuisine. Cafe Asia, located inside Crowne Plaza Qingdao, packs all the flavours you need into a single counter. Chicken and vegetarian samosas are delicious appetisers wrapped in dough; aromatic rice, daal, eggplant, beef curries with just the right blend of cardamom, onions, cloves and other spices, make for a delicious and colourful centrepiece; there are morsels of tandoori chicken, and fluffy naan bread delivered to your table. This author is particularly fond of the condiments, which can be hard to find in other Indian restaurants - savoury mango pickle, and chutneys made with coriander and tamarind, add an essential zest to the meal that should not be missed out. It's a series of essential touches that make for an incredible Indian dining experience, which, in the midst of the all-you-can-eat buffet, is a terrific value as well. For a truly decadent buffet experience, start your meal with a shrimp salad, sashimi, or cold cuts and rolls; say, "Yes!" to the Brazilian barbecue chicken wings and beef that the chef brings to your table every few minutes; and indulge in ice cream and chocolate fondue to top it all off. A la mian counter, Chinese dishes prepared in gourmet style, and Mongolian stir-fry are all available as well. Finally, this exceptional dining is very reasonably priced, with the lunchtime buffet at only 128元. Park Chan-wook has a good sense of the zeitgeist: 2000's JSA (Korea's former box-office champ) was a North-South thriller for the Kim Dae-jung era, the Vengeance Trilogy rode the 'Asia Extreme' wave and secured his international fame, and Thirst coincides with the recent vampire craze. (Let's skip I'm a Cyborg.) Park's bloodsucker is a Catholic priest (Song Kang-ho) vampirized by an experimental vaccine; the transformed Father Sang-hyun spends his nights swiping blood from hospitals and playing mahjong at an old friend's house. Sang-hyun -- whose new appetites extend beyond the red stuff -- begins an affair with his friend's long-suffering wife Tae-ju (Kim Ok-bin). Thirst eases into an adaptation of Émile Zola's Thérèse Raquin: hubby is dispatched and the lovers cope with the fallout. But Park still thinks in set pieces. What illuminated interior lives in Zola (like the couple's guilt-induced hallucinations) becomes halfconsidered plot devices, looping back to the vampiric elements and leaving scant psychological imprint. Park's own spiritual/religious musings don't cohere much better, with Sang-hyun losing and regaining his faith at odd junctures -- once seemingly within a single scene.

Such services can be particularly useful for new entrants to the market that need to first locate their key employees. Personal file management This is a peculiarity of the Chinese labour market – a file on every single Chinese person in the country documenting such information as educational background, job history and criminal record. Each employee’s file is generally held by the employer, being transferred when an employee switches jobs, but foreign companies in China are generally not allowed to hold these files. Therefore there is no

option but to outsource this function to a specialist agent or alternatively request the Personnel Bureau to hold the files. Generally the cost for this service is around 20元 per month per employee. Payroll processing For most companies, outsourcing of payroll can improve the efficiency, accuracy and confidentiality of the monthly process. It can also provide a greater degree of continuity compared with handling using internal resources and it may reduce overall cost to the company. Importantly, it allows a slimmeddown internal human resources department to focus on managing the company’s relationship with employees and strategic issues while the processing of payroll is handled from a remote location. A good payroll provider should be processing through a secure, internal system rather than using manual methods like Excel sheets. It should be able to provide a range of reports customised to the specific requirements of clients by deadlines set by the client. The best providers implement the service from a completely remote location (outside of the city in which the company and its employees

Mandatory benefit administration practices have improved over the past few years. In some cities it is possible to do most of the registration and deregistration of employees online. Many cities now allow monthly mandatory benefit contributions to be made via direct debit through a corporate bank account.
