We’re sharing

$763,000 in profits! It pays to be a member. Literally!

It’s our second year of our Member Spark Rewards program! And we couldn’t be prouder! Our program is better and brighter! We’ve always used our profits for our members’ good. In fact, it’s a key difference between a bank and credit union. For the second year in a row, we’re using our profits for our members’ good through cold, hard cash!

Why? We are owned by the people who bank with us. Our financial wellness is reflected by our members’ financial wellness. When our members become financially fit, through saving, investing, and building credit, we become more profitable too. When we profit, we share those profits with our members - now in funds they have immediate access to! It’s our little way of saying thanks for being a member. Not a member yet? Isn’t it time? For more information on the new Member Spark Rewards program, visit us at weyburncu.ca or any of our branch locations.

We put people above all. Whatever your hopes, dreams, needs and wants are—that’s what we put first. Banking is just how we help you make it happen. Like other financial institutions, we are full-service and open to everyone. The difference? Weyburn Credit Union is run on principles. We use our profits for your good - not our pockets.

Publisher’s Message Spring is here and we are excited about the warmer weather. We’ve been getting outside so much more already. My girls and I have started a few seeds with the anticipation of planting our garden. I already know what I will be planting for vegetables and herbs and have everything mapped out. My flowerpots are a different story. I think I know what I want them to look like but when I go to the greenhouse and see something I like, it always changes! We were sad to hear Prairie Green House is closing this year but were grateful to find out about Tail-ling Hills Farm by Bienfait which delivers to Weyburn and surrounding area. They are offering over 100 different colours of petunias! Not to mention everything else for your plant, yard and garden needs. This issue’s cover features RE/MAX Weyburn Realty. You’ll learn about each of their six realtors on a more personal level. Most people appreciate knowing a bit about someone before working with them and these stories do just that. Selling or buying a home is a huge investment and I hope their profiles will help you feel more comfortable when making that decision. You may have noticed a familiar face on the cover—Brody Ward, my husband. He made a career change in the New Year and is now a realtor with RE/MAX Weyburn Realty. This has been a great move for our family. Our girls are so happy that they get to see more of their papa and he’s so happy to be more involved in their daily activities. As always, this issue features many other amazing businesses. Enjoy reading their stories, find out what sets them apart and why you should support local ventures. Thank you for continually supporting ReFINEd. It’s our pleasure sharing these stories and hearing your feedback. Happy reading,

Brooke

Contributors I have been editing ReFINEd Weyburn since 2019 and it has been a blast from the very start. I was born and raised in Moose Jaw and went to the University of Regina. I earned my degree in psychology and went on to study communications at Simon Fraser University in B.C. I spent ten years in Vancouver before coming back to Saskatchewan in 2012. I live in Regina with my husband Chris, our daughters Violet and Ruby, and our tabby cat Norman. Today, I work as a writer, editor and consultant and every day is an adventure in writing.

Brook Thalgott Editor

Outside of my job and family, I love growing all kinds of plants inside and outside. My happy place is definitely in the garden, and Brooke Ward and I have shared many text conversations about plants (the last one was about propagating aloe. We’re just so wild and crazy on a Saturday night). In fact, when I am done writing this bio, I am going to sit down with my graph paper and gardening catalogues to plan my front yard flower beds. When I am not gardening, I also love to read, crochet, and watch true crime shows (I often joke I have a degree from Dateline University) and British detective dramas. I also love editing ReFINEd Weyburn. I have written about Weyburn so much that I feel like I live there. I know the history of Barber Motors straight from Mal Barber. I have talked accounting with Nancy McMahon, and veterinary care with the team at Prairie Animal Health. I know the frost-free date for Weyburn’s gardens, the tourist sights throughout the city, and I even bought my new flooring from Shannon at Floor Coverings International. Weyburn is a special place, and it comes through with every story I am lucky enough to write.

Ghislaine Moffitt was born in Montreal, Quebec, and raised in both the Eastern Townships of Quebec and Kingston, Ontario. She has always been passionate about art and knew she had to pursue a career in the arts. She completed a degree in Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal with a major in painting. She spent many years painting and exploring artistic avenues, from exhibiting her work, to working in galleries and becoming a custom framer. Another passion of hers is travelling. Travel has taken Ghislaine to Europe on many trips and backpacking excursions, to South East Asia and extensive travelling across both Canada and the US. She lived in France for a year and spent many years in the Canadian Rockies—primarily Jasper and Banff.

Ghislaine Moffitt Graphic Designer

She was introduced to graphic design by accident, but instantly fell in love with it and returned to Concordia University to get a degree in that field. Her career as a designer started right away when she began working for a design firm in Montreal. Always looking for new opportunities, she applied for a job in Ottawa working at the National Gallery of Canada. She was very fortunate to be hired and to work in such an inspiring environment (a dream come true)! She worked in the publications department as a graphic designer and managing editor of the Gallery’s art magazine. After many years there, she and her husband decided to move east with their two boys and now live in Halifax where she is working from home as a freelance graphic designer. Magazine design and layout has become her focus for the past six years. She is very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work on the ReFINEd Weyburn magazine for Brooke and loves working for such a passionate, kind and professional team.

Go Back in Time Did you know about Weyburn’s contribution to the war effort in WWII? RCAF Weyburn was part of the British Commonwealth Training Plan, with a relief training field at Halbrite, Sask. The airfield was operational from 1942 to 1944. In that time, 1,055 students graduated from the flight school, logging more than 180,000 hours of flight time. Today, the airfield is known as the Weyburn airport with two runways still in operation. What remains of the Hangar can be found in North Weyburn, on the south side as you drive in. Plus, some of the buildings at the airport are from that time too.

After the Storm, There is Sunshine Better Together Brings Hope to Those Who Need it

If we have learned anything in the last 12 months, it is that pandemics suck. The year since COVID-19 arrived has tested us in so many ways. We have lost loved ones. We have lost jobs and businesses. We have lost time with the people care about. We have struggled. Laura Eddy, a local resident, is determined to turn things around for the community she loves. “I heard about

Laura Eddy

a movement in North Battleford, started by a local student and a pastor,” says Eddy. “The student, Alyssa, had attended four funerals of people lost to suicide, and Deb, the pastor, noticed her in the congregation at the funerals.” Together, Deb and Alyssa decided they needed to do something to help their community come together in the wake of these losses, and they started ‘Better Together.’ They organized a Facebook page to sell t-shirts to be worn on Tuesdays. Every Tuesday, t-shirt wearers show their openness to talk to the others about mental health and to help people find the connections they need. “It started a movement, and the idea moved onto Tisdale, too.” Laura joined the Tisdale Better Together Facebook page via a friend, bought a shirt, and was impressed by what she saw. Laura has had her own struggles with mental health, and things came to a head with the loss of her brother to suicide in nearby Carlyle. “Everyone was stunned at his death, because it seemed like he had everything,” says Laura. “But that’s the thing—people suffer in silence.” She

COMMUNITY

knew she needed to do something. With the urging of her friend in Tisdale, Laura reached out to Deb, one of the Better Together founders to bring the idea to Weyburn. January 2, 2021, Laura created the Better Together Weyburn Facebook page, and the rest is history. So far, she’s sold 600 t-shirts and the community had embraced the idea wholeheartedly. “People have bought a shirt, wore them on Tuesdays, and opened themselves up to help one another,” she says. “Something as small as wearing a shirt can help so much. People are opening up to share their struggles and others are reaching out to help. It’s wonderful to see.” Laura isn’t done yet. Better Together is just beginning. She is setting up a pen pal program with three homes to help seniors feel less lonely during such a hard time, and encouraging everyone to embrace the idea of spreading kindness wherever they can. “When we’re kind and caring, and help others, we all do better. It’s that easy.”

Featured Courses & Parks If you’re looking for golf this summer, don’t miss the courses at Mainprize and Oungre Regional Parks. Designed by John F. Robinson, the Mainprize Golf Course is an 18-hole course built along the Rafferty shoreline. Many visitors have proclaimed that it is “the only resort in Saskatchewan with a view of Scotland.” The course offers a putting green, driving range, pro shop and 3-hole practice course. Plus, you’ll find a licensed restaurant and lounge, and large tournament facility that seats 150 with a massive deck and BBQ area. At Oungre Memorial Park, don’t miss the nine-hole sand green course, with its naturally watered fairways and intriguing “dog leg” holes. You can rent clubs at the park gate and you can enjoy 18hole mini-golf too. The park also features a swimming pool and restaurant, so it’s easy to make a day-long adventure.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

Seek Professional Help Let the People Who Have the Know-How Do it For You By Brook Thalgott

DIY—it’s something we love to do. It’s part of the Saskatchewan culture—we just

get on with it to get things done. Whether it’s tackling a landscaping project in the yard, painting a room in the house, or popping the hood to see what’s going on with the vehicle, many of us love to get our hands dirty to solve our problems. However, sometimes we should leave a few things for those that know more about what we’re trying to do ourselves.

Accountants

Financial Planners

I wasn’t the greatest math student, but I know my way around a spreadsheet, and I can manage a budget. For years, I did our personal taxes with an online tool—no problem. Then, I started my own business. I faced a pile of forms from everyone’s favourite government agency—Canada Revenue. One trip onto my online business account, and I said no thanks. My accountant is a godsend. I simply forward the forms and hand over whatever information or account access they need. They carefully explain what they are doing, why it’s good for me, and I sign whatever they need. Problem solved. An accountant can relieve a lot of stress and set you up for long-term financial success. Even if you think you have it under control, one session with a professional accountant can possibly unearth ideas you haven’t thought of to save time, money, or both.

With a business, a home, and a family, there are many financial decisions to consider. I have to make decisions about taking payroll versus a dividend. My husband and I need to make decisions about when and how we will retire. We also have to ensure our family is cared for if something happens to one or both of us. We have to set aside funds for our daughters’ educations, and work on paying off our mortgage. As two busy parents with jobs, we don’t have the time to do the homework to make each of these decisions.

Don’t forget about bookkeepers! Bookkeepers are often the unsung heroes of the small business world. Managing the day-to-day finances of a small business can be time consuming when you're focused on getting the work done. Bookkeepers can keep your business humming and your books tidy!

Lawyers If you’re like me, you earned your law degree from Law & Order and Better Call Saul. Unfortunately, that degree is worthless in the real world (sorry Dick Wolf). As much as I would love to object to something in a packed courtroom, I know that I am not an expert in law and my legal needs aren’t that dramatic. Lawyers are the people you need for everything from finalizing the sale of your home to setting up your will to incorporating a business, and much more. While these things may seem easy, having an amateur handle it can make something simple become much more complicated—and expensive. When you think you need a lawyer, call one.

Enter a financial planner. I cannot say enough good things about our financial planner. He is the best (and I met him through this very magazine). We handed over our statements and our ideas about what we need and want, and he made us a plan. It is one less thing we must manage, and he is always there to answer our questions and provide good advice.

Realtors Selling a house is a stressful time, even when it seems like it should be easy. There’s the work to prepare the house for sale—everything from minor repairs and painting to decluttering and staging for the best possible look. Then, it’s about pricing it so you get the most out of the sale. Buying a house is just as stressful. It’s likely the biggest purchase you’ll ever make. You want to make sure you’re getting a fair price, and a home that meets your needs with no hidden secrets. How do you manage transactions like these? Easy. Call a realtor. They will do the hard stuff for you. Realtors have the experience and knowledge you need to buy or sell a home. Whether you need help getting your house ready for the market or need advice on what home will work best for your lifestyle and budget—that’s a realtor’s job, literally.

• Loan statements - Provide any loan statements for the fiscal year as well as any new financing agreements. • Shareholder contributions - Identify any personal deposits you have made to your corporation, so they are not recorded as revenue. Otherwise, you may end up paying taxes on personal funds.

• Grain revenue - Provide grain tickets for preparation of AgriInvest/AgriStability reports.

• Inventory – Provide a complete list of your inventory. This may include bushels of grain by types held in bins or a list of merchandise held for re-sale at fiscal year end.

Corporate Income Taxes - Usually due three months after the year end, though there are some exceptions which accelerate this to two months after the year end.

• Accounts receivables – This includes work performed prior to year end and payments not received until after year end. • Investment statements - Provide your broker with authorization to allow your accountant to contact them directly for the required information. Don’t forget to tell your accountant if you have an investment account and how much you have transferred from your business account! • Capital asset additions and disposals – This includes invoices for purchases or sale of vehicles, land, farming equipment, oil field equipment, etc. • Accounts payables – These are expenses incurred prior to the year end but not paid for until after the year end.

Being proud of our communities and giving back is important, and it is something Swayze Concrete takes to heart. And we encourage our employees to do the same.

suits your needs best, what strength of concrete you need for your new back patio, or even “who should I use to build my house.” That’s a question we get quite often. Being spread across southern Saskatchewan gives us access to a lot of contractors in your local area and we can help you find the one that is right for you.

Volunteering in local minor sports, on local associations, or supporting fundraising activities in all these communities means that chances are, you have encountered a member of the Swayze Concrete “family” somewhere in your community. Our team does it all—from coaching multiple minor

With more than 60 years of industry experience and knowledge, we have the answers to your questions. Just call one of our offices to talk to an expert. You’ll likely end up in the hands of Ryan or Randy, our owners. They will find the best solution for your project. It could be advice on which gravel product

Recently, we have refocused Swayze’s back to our business roots. We started in concrete and aggregates back in 1960, and today that is our focus. With five concrete plants, the most one company has in Saskatchewan, it only makes sense that our focus lies within our roots. With certified concrete plants,

The personal connection to our customers has been a major and rewarding advantage of our focus on what we do best. Not only do you get to talk to an owner on the phone, but you will likely see one of them out on the delivery for your project or loading the gravel in your truck at one of the yards. To support our core business, we brought on the supply of LOGIX insulated concrete forms, or ICF. of these blocks with concrete, leaving a finished wall that is insulated and ready for exterior finish on one side and drywall on the other. Building with ICF is an excellent solution for many construction projects. The material is light to transport, handle and put together. There is less waste on the construction site because after the concrete pour, there is nothing to remove from the concrete. This increases efficiencies for the project. Finally, the end product provides energy savings that are unmatched with the ease of construction. If you are considering building a garage, a shed, a shop or a house, it is worth the conversation to learn about ICF.

then ever before, we at Swayze’s have truly been grateful for all the support we have seen in the community. We thank all our customers for the opportunity to serve you for more than 60 years, and we are looking forward to doing it for decades to come.

SANDIFORD MARKETING CO. Marketing Strategy for Small Businesses

Focused on Strategy Strategy is about where you want to go and how you’re going to get there. Strategy is the big picture and brings clarity to your overall marketing plan. Figuring out opportunities, being creative and building strategy are my favourite parts about marketing.

Sandiford Says I recently launched a new video series online called Sandiford Says where I discuss marketing facts, trends, observations, and other points I find relevant. So far, I have covered: • Creating Relatable Content • Out of the Box Marketing Ideas and • Marketing Gamification (one of my favourite topics!) Scan the QR code to check them out. Marketing takes many forms and can mean many things. My goal behind this series is to share my interpretation of marketing strategy and reveal my favourite findings in different industries.

About Me Flashback. It's 2015. I'm a marketing graduate from the Edwards School of Business, hungry to get to work in the inevitable 'real world'. I stumbled into an amazing marketing internship where I learned the tricks of the trade—learning to create from the heart.

Let’s Work Together

Over the years, I’ve worked on many diverse marketing projects that brought to light my passion for strategy and planning and the positive impact those projects had on the people, businesses and charities involved.

I work with small businesses that feel their marketing strategy could use some help, or aren’t sure where to start. Send me an email anytime.

I am so excited to bring the launch of Sandiford Marketing Co. to spread my love for marketing and bring value to collaborations in my hometown, Weyburn.

The Right Real Estate Team Makes All The Difference Weyburn Realty

He says that “you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with.” Winston is proud of his sales team that offer great service with ethics, professionalism, and loyalty. It is their goal and mission to always put the needs of their clients ahead of personal gain, and that has always been vital to RE/MAX Weyburn. The RE/MAX sales team is only part of the picture. A huge contributor to the success of RE/MAX Weyburn is the office manager, Linda Grams. Linda is tasked with many important roles from paperwork to bookkeeping and legal documents—all of which are crucial to the business. “Perhaps she is the true boss,” says Winston.

ay 2021 marks 10 years for Winston Bailey as the broker and owner of RE/MAX Weyburn Realty. “I moved into real estate in 2005 after 30 years of running my own construction company in Weyburn,” says Winston. “In 2011, my wife Jean and I decided it was time to venture out, and we bought the city’s RE/MAX firm.”

Winston has seen many changes to the real estate market in the last decade, with both rises and falls in the market. He knows that he and the RE/MAX team wouldn’t be successful without the support and trust of their clients, both past and present. Winston feels confident with the low interest rates and the forecast for our economy that 2021 will bring a strong market again.

Being in business in Weyburn has allowed Winston to have lots of involvement within the community. He has been involved with the Weyburn Red Wings, minor hockey, Habitat for Humanity, The Family Place and more. Giving back to those organizations has always been a huge part of Winston’s life. “It’s just who I am. Without them, our city would not be the great community it is,” he says. Winston also wants to thank the community of Weyburn, his staff, and his clients. Although Winston may be getting a little bit older, he still looks forward to coming to work each day and meeting new people, helping past and present clients, and even just being there to lend an ear to someone in need. orn and raised in Weyburn, Chad was a city police officer for a decade before deciding to move onto the family business—real estate. “I was ready for something new, and my dad Winston is a long-time realtor in the city,” says Chad. “Dad was making his plans to retire when he was ready, and he wanted to eventually pass on the family business. It just made sense.” Chad was no stranger to the world of real estate before making his move into his new career. Before dad Winston was a realtor, he was in construction and passed a lot of knowledge onto his son. “I got a 24-ounce framing hammer for my 12th birthday,” laughs Chad. “You could say bringing homes and people together is in our blood.” He joined the family business in 2015 and hasn’t looked back since. Outside the office, you can find Chad on the golf course in the summer or at his seasonal campsite at Nickle Lake. In the winter, he’s at the rink coaching hockey—something he’s done for more than 20 years. He’s also a member of the Weyburn Youngfellows, giving back to the community where he can.

PHOTO Big Dog Photography

Last, but certainly not least, Chad has a large, busy family. His ‘better half’ Jenn is a hairstylist at Tessa’s Beauty Salon in Weyburn. Daughter Hunter is a hairstylist in northern Alberta, and Houston is pursuing her studies in architectural technology and interior design at Sask Polytech in Moose Jaw. Sons Branson and Bowen are busy in high school, and baby of the family, daughter Maddix is a proud kindergartner. The busy family also has two golden retrievers and two cats. “My real estate career has been great for my family. The flexibility that it offers has really helped me maintain a great work life balance.” If you’re in the market, Chad has one nugget of advice. “Just because a home is listed with someone else, doesn’t mean I can’t show it to you. Our team can help with any property whether it’s listed with us or not.” His favourite part of the job is when he can bring the perfect home together with the right owner. “Seeing the happiness and satisfaction of a client when they get the right place is the best feeling,” he says. “That’s what makes it worthwhile.”

orn and raised in Weyburn, Renée spent a few years in Red Deer before coming back to the city she calls home. She has worn many ‘hats’ over the years, all of which she has genuinely enjoyed and learned so much from. One of her favourite ‘hats‘ for many years was working as an educational assistant alongside amazing educators at the Holy Family and Southeast Cornerstone school divisions. “That work will always remain such a tremendous honour for me. I was fortunate to work with some of Weyburn’s most incredible children. The children and youth in this community are the future and it’s so important to support them in any way we can.” Renée is entering her fifth year with RE/MAX Weyburn, having obtained her license in November 2016. “One aspect I love about being a realtor is that I learn something new every day. No two days are ever the same,” she says. “I always take away something good every day. There are days that prove to be more challenging but those are just more exciting.” Renée also loves the one-to-one relationships she has built with her clients and co-workers over the years and values each one. “I really care about working in the best interest of my clients on both sides of the equation. Home buying or selling should be a positive experience. Whether it’s a seller listing their home or a buyer looking for one, their best interests are always my priority.” One thing for buyers to know is, Renée can show you any property that is listed on the Saskatchewan MLS system regardless of who has it listed. Outside the office, Renée is the proud mother of son Jordan and daughters Jamisen, Jeena, and Jorgia. She keeps herself busy with projects around her home and her rental properties. Her favourite thing to do is be with her children and other family. “Although it has been more difficult this past year, I did manage to have a few treasured visits,” she says. Renée’s favourite vacation spot would have to be “in the sun, on a beach, anywhere.” Over the years, Renée has volunteered many hours with various organizations such as Weyburn & District United Way, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Weyburn Red Wings, Weyburn Minor Ball, St. Michaels School and the Weyburn Volleyball Club.

Her favourite thing about Weyburn is the people and their commitment to the community. “Everyone is always ready to lend a helping hand when a need arises, and the people of Weyburn and area are extremely generous,” she says. After years travelling with her children to many communities and countless venues and schools, she believes Weyburn has always had the best schools. “The Legacy Community School and Credit Union Sparks Centre will add even more to the already outstanding facilities Weyburn offers,” Renée also loves the city’s walking trails and you can find her out enjoying them almost daily when she isn’t working hard for her clients.

he newest member of the RE/MAX team is Brody Ward. Born and raised in Weyburn, Brody earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Regina in 2011 and spent several years working as a wellsite geologist. To broaden his technical expertise, Brody became a certified power engineer in 2016. That same year, he and his wife Brooke started their family. Life was busy, but Brody and Brooke saw an opportunity to purchase rental properties in Weyburn. Shortly thereafter, they started building a property management portfolio. “In my spare time, I ended up developing a genuine passion for real estate, and eventually, it just made sense to move into real estate full time,” says Brody. Today, Brody is a licensed realtor and property manager, and ready to make his mark in the Weyburn real estate market. Brody has renovated several properties turning him into a jack-of-all-trades. “Working with rentals and renovations has made it an easy transition into becoming a property manager and realtor,” says Brody. When he’s not working, Brody is a husband and also a proud dad of two young daughters. Brody is an avid hunter and enjoys trail running. One of Brody’s favourite things about the Weyburn real estate market is the wide range of homes, from new builds to classic homes. “I love the character in older, more historic homes. Classic buildings add so much charm to our community,” he says. Brody also loves the mathematics behind real estate. “In most cases, a real estate decision boils down to the numbers, and I like using the numbers to help my clients make the right decision,” he says. “A home is a home, but it’s also an investment.”

Dream Closet Transformation By Kiteen Mainil

This article is a little different than my usual fashion-focused posts, but spring to me means a time of renewal. What better way to showcase that than with a recent closet refresh?! If you have a dark and dingy space in your home—now is the perfect time to organize and freshen it up!

W

hen Eleesha with Bespoke Interior Design/The Creative Cleaning Co and Diana with Stor-X approached me about updating our bedroom closet, my initial reaction was that we didn’t need it. You know how sometimes you just get stuck going through the motions and do things the same way you always have even if there is a better way? That was me. My closet situation was far from perfect, but I just got used to dealing with how it was and hadn’t ever considered changing it. After talking with Eleesha and Diana about their ideas and seeing a visual of what my closet could look like, I was blown away. Stor-X has an amazing 3D design program that allows you to visualize your dream closet coming to life. When Diana put in the dimensions of our space and shared with me exactly how she planned to improve on our closet space and aesthetic, I was ready to get started that day! We picked out finishes, hardware, belt and pant racks, a jewelry drawer and more that afternoon. Each Stor-X project is a custom build, so I impatiently waited a couple months for my closet to arrive and when it did Diana and her team arrived to install it! It was quite possibly the happiest day of 2021 I have had so far.

The Creative Cleaning Co taught me how to properly fold all my clothing to optimize space and painted and prepared our closet before install day (AND ironed my husband’s dress pants!). It was such a transformation and I still cannot believe they were able to make my closet dreams come true!

This one stop shop concept was created after Shannon Forrester, owner at Floor Coverings International, realized she was referring to and working with her other friends in the home improvement business for most of her projects. “After a few glasses of wine one night, the hub was created,” says Shannon. “Everyone took a leap of faith, renting a large commercial space to offer a showroom and area for clients to see products and meet with builders and other designers.” The response to the Design Hub has been amazing and surpassed all of their expectations and goals. “We love that we get to work together, but also that we have created a space that helps our clients to make decisions in an easier less stressful way,” says Shannon. “We are your destination for everything home—flooring, tile, area rugs, cabinets, blinds, draperies, wallcoverings, countertop, paint, custom furniture and interior design.” Find the Design Hub in Regina at 411 Park Street and follow them on Facebook. CARVED IN STONE Find Timeless Looks for Your Home at CNG Stone

W

hen planning a home renovation or new construction, choosing countertops is one of the many decisions you’ll make. The right countertop can pull a room together as well as be a stunning showpiece in your home. There are plenty of countertop options out there and none may be more popular and beautiful than granite and quartz. Both provide a timeless yet modern look to any space.

Whether you’re looking to renew the kitchen, the bathroom or even the fireplace, stone is a terrific choice. Regina’s CNG Stone Products is your one-stop shop for all things granite and quartz. The company works hard to provide the best selection of stone in the city, and the only way to genuinely appreciate their stones is to see them in person. “Our granite and quartz choices have to be seen to be believed. We have

over 500 slabs in stock,” says Ashley Martin, Office Manager at CNG Stone. While granite is still a popular choice for countertops, quartz has rapidly become a wonderful option. Quartz is great for everyday use, with excellent durability and marble-like good looks. Marble may be beautiful but it’s too soft and easily scratched—whereas quartz has a marble look without marble’s trouble spots. Whatever you’re looking for, whether granite or quartz, CNG Stone is home to dozens of colours of granite and hundreds of colours of quartz. If CNG Stone doesn’t have what you want in stock, they can find exactly what you’re looking for. Once you’ve found the right stone for your project, the CNG Stone team cut your stone to their exacting standards. Every piece is measured with a laser, ensuring the template is perfect. Once measurements are done, each piece is fabricated to ensure nearly invisible seams and a perfect fit. Installation is handled the same way with the same care. Each job managed cautiously from start to finish.

Eleesha Jensen knows about the quality and selection of stone available at CNG. She has worked with CNG with her interior design clients, and in her own home. “I have had the opportunity to work with CNG as both a customer and a design professional in our multiple locations—Regina, Weyburn and Tisdale. They have great service and create an easygoing environment for their clientele,” says Eleesha. “That is why I chose to trust them in my own home in Weyburn, to create a space for my family

to gather around, as I have seen them do so many times in the past.” Amanda Brady echoes Eleesha’s sentiments. “We’ve been working with CNG Stone almost exclusively for a couple years now, and the client experience is fantastic. The team is very knowledgeable, and they are personable and great with clients,” says Amanda. “I have also been a CNG Stone client for my own home and my own personal experience was nothing short of amazing.”

Brandon from North Construction Group also has much to say on a kitchen project with CNG Stone. “Putting in a beautiful piece of natural stone is the heart and soul of your kitchen. Seeing the granite for the first time is truly an Oh-my-God moment,” says Brandon. “CNG Stone works with us to ensure customer expectations are always exceeded.” He also notes their huge slab yard and the customer’s ability to select their stone from a huge selection of in-stock choices. “They have more stone selection than I could ever imagine. It seems like every day there is a new semi-load delivering new slabs,” he says. Open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, CNG Stone Products is ready to help you find the perfect stone for your project. GARDENING

Sage Advice

Tips & Tricks for Newbie Gardeners By Brook Thalgott

Last year, many people decided to give gardening a try because why not if you’re at home all summer long. This year is shaping up to be the same, with novice gardeners trying their hand again at a garden, and others seeing what all the fuss is about.

I

started patio gardening in 2008 when I was living in a condo in greater Vancouver. That patio garden got me hooked, and now I garden in my own yard in Regina and in a community garden plot. Here’s my warning to all new and hopeful gardeners: this is an addictive hobby. If you choose to pursue it, you will become one of those people who gazes at seed catalogues in January, collects plants and seeds with abandon, and will never, ever be truly satisfied with their garden because there is always something new to grow. If that is still okay to you, let’s talk gardening!

52  ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

Before you plant a thing, you need to work through this list of must-dos. • You need to assess where you’re going to garden. Do you have a big area in the yard, or a sunny spot on the patio? Be realistic about the size of garden you want to try and your commitment. • Find the sun and the rain. You’ll need to know how much sun your spot gets. Shoot for at least six hours of sun for a good variety of flowers and vegetables to grow well. Also, you’ll need access to plenty of water from overhead and the hose.

GARDENING

• Good growing needs good soil. Not any old patch of dirt will do. Whether you’re planting in pots, raised beds, or into the ground, your soil matters. You’re going to need nutrient-rich, well-drained topsoil to make your garden grow. Talk to your local greenhouse, garden centre or landscape supply company about the soil you’ll need for your space. Depending on size, you can get it by the bag or by the load. • Know about frost. The last frost date in the spring, and the first one in the fall are important dates to know. According to The Old Farmer’s

flowers, vegetables, herbs, perennials, trees, and shrubs, and she had a lot of advice to share. “Petunias are an excellent annual flower to start with,” says Melissa. “They can handle our weather well, including our sun and wind, and they look beautiful.” Perfect for the flower bed or a pot, petunias look even better with some pretty foliage, like sweet potato vine. My choices for a new flower gardener would be snapdragons and lilies. Snapdragons come in many varieties growing anywhere from four inches to three feet. Bees love them, and I have found more than one bee over the years catching a quick nap in a snapdragon (it is as adorable as it sounds). Lilies are beautiful perennials that spread fast. The orange tiger lilies in my front yard are almost weed like in their spreading speed, and they have filled in my flowerbed beautifully.

Almanac, these are the frost dates in the southeast: • • • • •

Carlyle – June 6 and Sept 6 Carnduff – May 25 and Sept 14 Estevan – May 24 and Sept 15 Oxbow – May 22 and Sept 13 Weyburn – May 26 and Sept 11

• Mulch is your friend. Two to three inches of mulch around your plants will keep weeds down and retain moisture. Plus, mulch gives a flowerbed a lovely, finished look. I use natural cedar mulch myself. It also comes in black, brown, and red which can work for many landscaping looks. • Your plants need food. While good topsoil does have nutrients in it, your plants will need a regular fertilizing over the summer. Your local garden

centre experts can guide your selection of fertilizer. As well, set up a composter to build a supply of organic goodness. Your eggshells, coffee grounds, lawn clippings, fruit and vegetable peels, and yard leaves will break down into a rich compost that will make your garden thrive. Don’t compost breads, pasta, rice, dairy, fats, oils, nuts, fish, bones or animal waste and never put weeds in your composter. Now that you know where and when you’ll garden and what’ll you need to start, now let’s talk about what to grow. I caught up with Melissa Murphy, owner at Tail-ling Hills Farms Greenhouse at Bienfait. Melissa’s greenhouse supplies southeast gardeners with beautiful

GARDENING

As for vegetables, Melissa suggests tomatoes are a good choice to start with. Plants are easily found at your local greenhouse and tomatoes from the garden make grocery store tomatoes seem sad and pathetic. Available in a rainbow of colours and many sizes from tiny to huge, tomatoes come in both indeterminate (meaning they keep growing and will need staking or a tomato cage for support) and determinate (stops growing at a certain height). She also suggests green beans as another easy-to-grow, tasty vegetable for the novice gardener. I would add carrots and potatoes to that list as well. Both are simple to grow and tasty to boot. Purple carrots and potatoes also add some fun flair to the dinner plate, too. “Things like cabbage and broccoli need more care, especially because of moths,” says Melissa. “Start simple and work your way up.” With spring here and summer coming, now is the time to try your hand at gardening. It’s a great way to get some sun and exercise while impressing your friends and neighbours with beautiful flowers and delicious veggies that you can proudly say you grew yourself!

Dear Home, We Should Hang Out More 2021 Home Trends By Kali Holdstock

With trends evolving and new textiles, patterns and fabrics making their way to us this spring, let’s take a look at the top trends for 2021 to make your home your personal retreat.

A

fter a year that guided many of us to spend more time at home, going back to basics such as baking, extra DIY projects and more, 2021 is an opportunity to bring comfort and creativity to our living spaces. Let’s see what works for you in and outside your home!

Plenty of Plants In 2020, plants were on trend and there is no end in sight. Let’s keep the trend of ‘plenty of plants’ going strong. Houseplants are good for your health— and not just for their visual beauty. They do the opposite of what we do when we breathe. Plants release oxygen and

56  ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

absorb carbon dioxide. This not only freshens up the air, but also eliminates harmful toxins. Sign me up for anything that is aesthetically beautiful and keeps my lungs healthier.

Let the Light In One of the easiest ways to have a more peaceful vibe in your home is maximizing natural light. Exposure to natural light helps our bodies produce vitamin D, improves our circadian rhythms, and sleep patterns. It also helps us to focus, enables us to get more done, and even makes us happier. And it helps with that dreaded power bill.

A Room for Everything When spending more time at home, it makes more sense to dedicate that space to numerous purposes. Crafts, sewing, painting, meditation, an office… the options are endless. Do you use your garage? Turn it in to a She Shed, a Man Cave or both. A garage can feature a seating area, a full-service bar and abundant storage,

including wine cabinets and a beverage fridge. If the TV doesn't keep you entertained, there's always pool, the piano, darts and more. Since it’s a safe guess to assume 2021 will have us staying home a bit, give yourself some fun multi-purpose spaces.

Earthy & Natural Tones Let’s return to natural and have some earthy vibes throughout our home this year. Earthy colour trends are such warm and comforting colours to incorporate in your home. As we continue to spend more time than usual indoors, many of us are craving a greater connection with nature—not just when we're lucky enough to get out and about in it, but when we come home as well. If earthy tones are not your deal, bring in some pops of colour. Throw a few emerald green pillows in your living room if it makes you happy. The trendy colors of spring and summer 2021 reflect naturalness and ease. While keeping lines clean and modern, it is a great way to straddle minimalist and maximise aesthetics.

Country Chic Farmhouse won't be out of style anytime soon, but a new decor cousin is now on the scene and getting lots of attention. It's called country chic.

58  ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

It has the same warmth and comfy feel of farmhouse but is not so nicked up, distressed and painted. A wander through warm amber tones, mellow meadow prints and beautiful embroidery. Mix and match natural textures for a cozy and inviting look that lift both home and spirit.

Get Outside As much as we all love to get cozy in the living room and lounge around in bed, a backyard is a true sanctuary— especially if it's prepped with all the right backyard bells and whistles. Indeed, your outdoor space can be just as inviting, comfortable, and stylish as your interiors, but it also offers fresh air and nature. It's the best of both worlds. From manicured landscapes to stately patios and above or inground pools, you can create a lot with little space. Get out everything you need for s’mores, get outside, and fire up that firepit. Spend your summer jumping on a trampoline, cooling off in a pool, or lounge in a hammock. Make the best of your spring and summer!

EXPERT ADVICE

EXPERT ADVICE

A CLEAN BREAK Storage and Organizing Tips for Spring Cleaning

A

s spring arrives, it’s time to tidy up and put away everything that screams winter. Here are a few tips to help you get your spring cleaning underway:

• Make a plan. A good spring cleaning will take time. Think about what you want to accomplish, set some goals, and be realistic about the work that needs to be tackled. • Know where you can store your stuff. Check out your closets, drawers, shelves, and cupboards. Think strategically—you might find places you never thought of using. • Keep track. Think about what you need to store, and how often you need to access it. Your airfryer or slow cooker may come out of the cupboard once a week, but your Hallowe’en decorations come out once a year. • Start small. A big job can be overwhelming, so pick one small project and start there. Find a drawer or closet, and work through it. You’ll find your stride as you see your success. • Keep, store, donate and toss. Organize your clutter into those four categories and show no mercy. You’ll never truly declutter if you don’t see stuff leave the house.

62  ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

• Decide between needs and wants. Do you really need that? Or are you hanging on because you want to, but aren’t sure why? Good organization comes with really understanding what you need and getting rid of what you don’t. You’ll feel so much better knowing what you do have is what you want and getting rid of the ‘dead weight’ you don’t. • Find a home for it. Once you know what is staying, make sure it has a place to go and everyone in the house knows. That can cut down on the inevitable “have you seen the…?” or “where is the…?” questions. • Unload it. Even if you don’t want it, someone else might. Facebook buy and sell groups, charities, garage sales and the local recycling organization will happily take your stuff. • Keep it up. Good habits take time to build and it’s easy to undo your hard work. Put things away now, not later. Make decluttering a regular habit. Once you have your home organized, stay on course.

HOME

• Enjoy your sense of accomplishment. When you’re done the work, be proud of yourself. It’s a big job, and when it’s done, you’ll love the feeling you’ll get when you see a tidy, wellorganized home. Good job!

harmacists, working in their bright white lab coats, are often tucked away in the back of your favourite drug store or supermarket. However, they are a vital part of your health care—and often the first people we ask for help when dealing

with feeling under the weather. They are there when you make a mad dash to the pharmacy, looking for help to deal with colds, flu, stomach bugs and much more. They are also there when you’re faced with new medications, and need advice on how much to take, when and how.

As the parent of a child with a minor but chronic medical concern, I know firsthand how much pharmacists can help—and how much they care. There are two pharmacists out there who have no idea how much they helped our family three years ago. We were in Winnipeg

visiting family over the February long weekend. Our five-year-old daughter had been dealing with chronic urinary tract infections that flared up that Monday. We headed to the children’s hospital ER, where we had the presence of mind to call our helpful pharmacist at home to get the name of the specific drug she needed, to tell the doctor. We departed the ER after many, many hours, armed with a prescription. We aimed for the only late-night pharmacy in the area, tired and hungry. Enter the second pharmacist, who quickly filled the prescription and advised us on what over-the-counter drug could provide some quick relief for our little girl so she could get some much-needed rest, after a much-deserved hamburger and fries. Those pharmacists got us the prescription and treatment she needed— and fast. Did you know Saskatchewan’s pharmacists are also armed with health care knowledge to deal with minor ailments and vaccinations? “Our dayto-day job is managing medications for our pharmacy’s patients,” says Ian Fleck, pharmacist at Prairie Sky Co-op in Weyburn. “We take your prescription, ensure the dosage is correct, and that it is compatible with any other medications or allergies that may be present. We also educate patients on how to take medications, and what to watch for in terms of side effects.” Fleck notes that now pharmacists do much more. “We can also help you deal with minor ailments and prescribe certain medications to save you a trip to the doctor’s office. And we can also manage many kinds of vaccinations.”

Plus pharmacists are also trained and authorized to provide injections for vaccinations like influenza, pneumonia, shingles, HPV and travel as well as other injections like Vitamin B-12, hormones and mood stabilizers. “We’re here to help you manage your health care. We can advise on what overthe-counter treatments are available, can prescribe certain medications, or refer you to a physician,” says Fleck. “If you have a health concern, don’t hesitate to call or stop by for advice.” Pharmacists have the knowledge, advice, and experience when and where you need it—even near midnight on a cold, winter long weekend.

eyburn’s Prairie Sky Co-op Pharmacy, located in the Weyburn Food Store, is on the front line of health care—and proud to be there. “At our pharmacy, our pharmacists are not tucked away behind a counter,” says Ian Fleck, pharmacy manager at Prairie Sky Co-op. “We’re often in the aisles, helping our customers find the products they need, and providing advice, too.” The pharmacy works hard to be an approachable, friendly resource when you need it. You’ll find a full suite of services, including some that might surprise you. In addition to filling prescriptions, the pharmacists at Prairie Sky Co-op

can also prescribe medications for many health concerns and administer vaccinations. As well, they are always happy to provide medication reviews— drop-in or by appointment, and they’ll even come to your home. “We will sit down with you to review what you’re taking and discuss what’s working and what may need to change,” says Ian. “If we find issues, we contact your doctor to make the needed adjustments.” The pharmacy will also package your medications into easy-to-use, time-ofday blister packs at no charge, to help you or a loved one manage medications, so they are taken appropriately. As well, the pharmacy is home to a long-time

diabetes educator, Doug MacNeill, who can provide great advice on diabetes management to anyone who needs it and provide hands on support to those living with diabetes. Also, every pharmacist is trained to measure and order custom compression stockings, and they’ll even come to your home to ensure you’re getting the care you need. Possibly the best service offered by the pharmacy is free delivery on all prescriptions. That’s right—free delivery of your prescription anywhere in Weyburn. It’s a service that got incredibly popular after COVID-19 showed up. “We have always offered free delivery, and it took off when the

By using their easy online order form, Co-op will pack up your grocery order and your prescriptions and have it for you to pick up or delivered free within Weyburn. Not only can you get free delivery, but having your prescription filled is also easy. The Prairie Sky Co-op Pharmacy App (available at the Apple Store and Google Play) allows you to request prescriptions for pick up or delivery and see your medication profile. You can also order by phone, text or online. “It’s never been more convenient to get a prescription or to see what medications you’re currently taking,” says Ian. Most of all, Prairie Sky Co-op is there for you. “Our patients matter to us, and we’re always glad to see you. We’re here for you in-store, or we’ll come to you for your health care needs,” says Ian. “It’s just part of the commitment Co-op has to the community and the people it serves.” See Ian and the Prairie Sky Co-op pharmacy team at the Weyburn Food Store. “Permanent makeup is a great way to get a beautiful look that stays.” - Harmony Blunt

BE YOUR OWN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL Photos Images by Jon Gillies

Putting your best face forward is unique to every person. For some of us, the idea of not having to put “our face” on every day sounds like a dream come true. With Weyburn’s Beautiforever, that dream is possible. “Permanent makeup is a great way to get a beautiful look that stays,” says Beautiforever owner Harmony Blunt. Harmony has been offering permanent makeup services since 2016 and came back to Weyburn last year after a stint teaching permanent makeup at Eternal Beauty Institute in Winnipeg. “I was in Manitoba for over a year, and came back to Weyburn last April because of my good friendships and wonderful clients,” she says. Beautiforever’s full menu of services includes lips, eyebrows, eyeliner, and microblading—plus scalp micropigmentation for both men and women. Clients can choose how much or how little they want to do and can enjoy the benefits of permanent makeup for years.

The process to get started is simple. First, Harmony meets with you to discuss your needs and assess your skin. “Permanent makeup is dependent on your skin, and we’ll make a plan that works for you and your lifestyle,” she says. Once you’re happy with what will work for you, Harmony makes the appointment to get started. Brows take around two hours, with eyeliner and lips taking approximately two and a half to three hours. She always starts with prenumbing the area to ensure you’re totally comfortable before she proceeds. “I continuously numb clients throughout the procedure with secondary numbing as well to make sure they stay as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure,” says Harmony. “Some clients even fall asleep while I’m working on them.” After your session, Harmony sends you home with an aftercare kit and instructions on how to care for your new makeup. Four weeks later, she sees you one more time for a final touch up. “After that touch up, you’re done! Your permanent makeup is in place,” she says. “I also recommend annual appointments to ensure your look is staying fresh.” Harmony also does scalp micropigmentation which helps disguise thinning hair in men and women. “It’s a great way to cover hair loss spots in men and give the look of fuller hair for women losing hair density,” she says. “It’s an excellent solution that works well on many scalps.”

Beautiforever also handles paramedical tattooing for clients with healthrelated concerns too. “I also do areola reconstruction for breast cancer patients,” says Harmony. “I can help restore your look after procedures like mastectomy.” Ready to take the next step and see what Beautiforever can do for you? a consultation and see what Harmony recommends for your beautiful face. “The only thing I hear after getting a service done is that people wish they had done it sooner. If there is something bothering you, or that you want to freshen up, make an appointment,” she says. “Don’t wait.” Find Beautiforever at 307 Souris Avenue in Weyburn, online at Beautiforeverpmu. com and follow Harmony on Facebook and Instagram. Eat Local Local Food Can Do More Than Just Taste Good By Brook Thalgott

We have learned many things during our year of #pandemiclife. We’ve learned new hobbies to pass the time, explored places close to home, and we have come to appreciate what surrounds us. Now, I know we’re all excited to get back to how it used to be, but there are a few things from pandemic life that we should embrace long-term. One of those is appreciating— and expanding—our local food processing industry.

G

reat strides have been made in this space before we ever heard the name COVID-19, but the pandemic showed us how local food can be more than just picking up fresh veggies at the farmers market or buying a side of beef from your friendly neighbourhood farmer. Canada saw beef packing facilities in Alberta closed by COVID-19 outbreaks in 2020—two plants that represent 70 per cent of the country’s beef processing. These closures shook the supply chain and drove many consumers to panic buy beef. There were also closures in other meat facilities across the country due to COVID-19, leading many people to wonder if the country’s meat processing facilities need to become smaller and more regionalized to prevent these issues from happening again. The closures also led many people back to their local farmer to buy meat—with many local meat producers seeing a major increase in demand. The pandemic also drove consumers to look local for other foods too, especially as producers leaped into the digital world when COVID-19 curtailed in-person markets. For example, the Regina Farmers Market quickly set up online ordering and contactless weekly pick-up, allowing consumers to get their hands on local food easily and safely—and helping food processors keep and grow their customer bases. There were no supply chain issues to deal with. Instead of the food coming by semi or train, it came in the back of a pick-up truck from a farm close by. All of this taught us that how much food we grow, how much we value easy access to safe, nutritious quality food, and that we want more of it. Economically speaking, adding more food processing to Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector just makes sense. According to the Government of Saskatchewan, value-added processing in agriculture is doing $5 billion in annual sales, with more than 300 processors in the province employing over 5,000 people. Local companies are seeing great success, and many are developing new and exciting products to keep up with new food trends. Regina’s Mera Foods is on track to offer Saskatchewan-grown and made oat milk this summer as oat milk rapidly becomes a coffee shop staple. Moose Jaw’s Canada Golden Cooking Oil cold presses local canola and camelina for Canadian and international markets. Splendor Garden is an organic spice and herb brand based at Watson, and nearby Midale is the home to the growers for Three Farmers, the Saskatchewan snack and camelina oil company. Daybreak Mill is the southeast source for organic grains and flours (among many products), with customers across the country. Drake is known for its fine sausage and smokies, Yorkton’s Harvest Meats hot dogs are a Saskatchewan barbecue staple, and both are delicious with a dollop of Gravelbourg Mustard—which is from Gravelbourg. These are just some of the companies here taking what we grow and making them consumer-ready for grocery store shelves. Next time you’re in the grocery store, read the label and see where your food is coming from. The more we support local food, the more we all benefit.

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATIONS AIN’T BULL! By Kendra Elliott, DVM

S

pring is a busy season when it comes to cows. The excitement (and exhaustion) of calving is barely over before it’s time to turn the herd out to pasture so that next year’s calving season stays on schedule. The bulls insist they’ve got this job covered, so surely you can finally sit down and relax. Unfortunately, as you’re admiring your bulls, you notice that Mr. Man got a little frostbitten during that coldsnap and Squirrelly seems to have lost his stash of nuts. You’ve heard about getting bulls “tested” but is the time and cost worth it?

BREEDING SOUNDNESS A complete breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) starts with a physical exam to ensure the bull can keep up with the cows and has normal reproductive anatomy (including scrotal circumference). Then, the semen test looks for satisfactory semen concentration (how many sperm), motility (how the sperm move), and morphology (how the sperm are shaped). All these factors are needed for successful breeding, fertilization, and pregnancy. A bull can also be tested for trichomoniasis during a BSE by collecting a preputial scraping. “Trich” doesn’t cause issues for the bull. However, it can be passed onto each cow he breeds and can result in early pregnancy loss multiple times. Cows usually clear the infection on their own (although often after the

72  ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

breeding season is over) but older bulls are permanently infected and should be culled. It is estimated that one in five bulls will have unsatisfactory semen quality. When libido (the desire to breed) and serving capacity (how may cows can be bred) are also examined, that failure ratio increases to one in four. The easiest and most efficient way to identify that extra five per cent of bulls who can result in 100 per cent open cows is to monitor your bulls every three to seven days during the breeding season.

the best opportunity for improved profitability is to maximize the total number and weight of calves weaned. Having a highly fertile bull with a satisfactory BSE is essential to achieve this. Simply put, a few infertile cows are unfortunate, but an infertile bull is an absolute wreck! So, give us a call and book your bulls in for their annual Breeding Soundness Evaluation.

BREEDING SEASON Studies have shown that the most economical breeding season in Western Canada lasts 65 days (three estrous cycles). Due to gestational variation, this results in a 60 to 80-day calving season. However, at least 70 per cent of cows should be pregnant within the first 21-day cycle. This tight schedule creates a more uniform group of calves that allows for easier herd management, including vaccination and replacement heifer selection. Most importantly, most of your calf crop has more time to gain weight prior to weaning. It is estimated that for every cycle a cow remains open, at least 50 pounds of weaning weight is lost. With constantly increasing input costs and undoubted market variability,
