coach’s letter 6

To my team, I hope now that it’s over and you are reading this, that our year was everything you imagined it would be. Success isn’t determined by winning, it is determined by your ability to never give up. Every person on this team gave it their all and truly never gave up. That is the sole reason that we were successful this year. This team accomplished so many skills, that we only dreamed we could do at the beginning of the season. This year was hands down the most growth I have ever seen in a team from beginning to end. The ability to grow is all we can ask for in sports and in life. Everyone of you have grown to be such an incredible athlete. If I have the right to take responsibility for even a little bit of the progress you guys have made, I am so incredibly honored to have helped you become the athletes you have always wanted to be. You all have certainly made me the coach I am today. I have learned so much from each and every one of you. I would have never been able to be the coach you needed if it wasn’t for all of the love, support, and appreciation you have given to me as your mentor. There is one last thing that I ask from you all going forward. I ask that today and years from now that you always believe in yourself. This year we proved that anything is possible. No matter what challenges you face, I know each and every one of you are capable of overcoming any obstacle that stands in your way. If you believe in yourself, have dedication, pride and that never quit attitude, you will be a winner! You will always be my regional champions and I wish you all continued success in the future, on and off the mat. I love you girls so much and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for one of the best years of my life. Love your biggest fan, Coach

M

y name is Jordyn Rindner, I am a Sophomore at Clarke High School and I am a Clarke Varsity Cheerleader. My cheer team means the world to me. We are committed to each other to achieve a common goal, which is to be the best that we can be. We’ve been through so many ups and downs but we overcame it all. I’ve made so many amazing friends on this team and I don’t know what I would do without them. We’re not just 18 girls on a cheer team, we’re family. I have so many people that have inspired me and pushed me to do great things including my family, friends, amazing teammates and my coach. I am honored to be a part of this team and to say that it’s been the best year yet.

H

i my name is Cassie Roche I’m a senior captain on the Clarke varsity cheer team. I have been a part of the varsity team since I was freshman and it’s safe to say each year was a completely different journey. From the moment my junior year cheer season ended I didn’t even think that we would have a team for my senior year until we got a new coach and everything changed. This team is hands down the best team I have ever been a part of. We work for what we have and always stay humble towards everything. We were given a million and one challenges and we seemed to get passed them all with injuries, new flyers, and school. This year taught me to never give up to keep fighting and it always gets easier. I am beyond honored to be one of the captains of this amazing crazy team. Now this is something I never say but, if I could go back and relive all the moments of this cheer season I wouldn’t hesitate a bit.

H

i my name is Isabella Rivera and I am a senior and a caption on Clarke Varsity Cheer. I have been a member of this team, along with my other two captains, since freshman year. The last four years have seen some of the best moments of my life, and that is largely due to cheerleading. Most people do not understand the commitments this sport truly is, but I can state without of doubt that what we have achieved this year is due to the blood, sweat and tears from the last four years. This team has seen a lot of ups and downs and we have been through a lot together. I truly believe this is the year that we can accomplish all that we want to. This year has something that I have not felt the last three years. There is a different spirit about this team and all of us. Cheer has been the largest part of my high school experience. It occupies my life from June to March every year. Yes, sometimes it can be overwhelming, challenging, and difficult; but in the end, it is one of the most rewarding things I have ever been so lucky to be a part of. Nothing will ever compare to the feeling of competing on that mat. It is a feeling I have only ever felt with this sport and doubt I will feel with any other. I could not imagine spending the last four years any other way. I love my team, and all the girls who have ever been a part of it. Cheerleading will be one of the things I miss the most when this year over. As challenging as it is, I am sure that if given the opportunity, I would do it all over again. Â

H

i my name is Stephanie Papoutsakis and I’m a junior on our varsity cheer team. I have done cheer ever since 7th grade and this has easily been the best year yet. Junior year, as everyone knows, is the toughest year of high school and being able to be on this team while going through this year is honestly a blessing. I have never been this close to a group of girls before ever in my life, we are always together and know so much more about each other than we could have ever imagined. This team means more to me than just a sports team or just a group of girls, they’re my family away from home and I wouldn’t want it any other way. We’ve had to overcome so many obstacles as individuals and as a team in the past two seasons, that anyone else hit with the same situations, wouldn’t have been able to overcome. One big life lesson these past few months have taught me is that no matter what, life goes on. Whether it’s on the mat or in the real world, you always need to push through and get your job done. This team has helped shape the person I am today and I owe it to, not only my coach, but to the other 17 girls who make this team what it is. I can only hope that next year is as exciting as this one and that I can be a senior who shares this tradition with new coming members to the team, as the seniors did for me.

Our coach has always taught us win or lose, stay humble and that is what CHSVC does. I’ve learned so many lessons about being a great cheerleader and a great person. i my name is Brianne Courtney and I have been on the varsity cheer team since I was a freshman and I’m now a junior, every year on the team was different but this year with our new coach had to be the best. Our coach just has so much faith in us that no matter what happens we always get through it. We have had so many obstacles. I had a big obstacle myself this season that also really effected my team. I was coming down from a stunt and sprained the ligaments in my ankle. It was so bad that I thought I wouldn’t be back for nationals but I did everything in my power to make sure I was here for my team and I am. I cannot wait to compete at Nationals with this amazing team. We are going to kill it because throughout this season we have just kept challenging ourselves for harder and better things. Now we have a routine that we never thought we would have. This has to be hands down one of the best teams I have ever been on. Practicing with my crazy and hilarious team everyday is just something that I would relive 100 times.

i my name is Elena Danielo and I am a freshman on Clarke Varsity Cheerleading. This is my second year on this team. I was moved up as an eighth grader last year. Last year I was very intimidated by my teammates and this year I can talk to them like they are my sisters. CHSVC is my second family and I don’t think I would be where I am without them. This year we have achieved a lot more than last year since a new coach was hired. We have fought through many obstacles but we never gave up. The mentality on this team is amazing and I would never want to change it for the anything. We have worked so hard on our Nationals routine and I cannot wait for us to kill it and show everyone what CHSVC is made of. This team is my life and practice is my second home and I would not want to be anywhere else with anyone else.

H

i my name is Katie Gehrig. I’m a base for Clarke varsity cheerleading and I’m a junior in high school. This team means so much to me. I’ve made so many new friends that I’ll have for a while. I’ve met my best friends through this team. Being on this team has shaped me into the person I am today. Being on this team taught me to never give up and push through everything. Right when we’re going good we get a set back every time like Adri getting stitches right before a competition and Katie Volino having to go in her spots two hours before the competition and we hit a perfect routine. My future goals are to become a physical therapist and make a lot of money. I don’t know if I’m going to continue with cheer in college, that will depend on what college I go to and how I’m feeling having to balance college and cheer. One thing I can do to help the world better is not litter. There is trash everywhere around my neighborhood and on the beaches and that’s not good for the world.

I’ve done cheerleading for over 10 years, but this is the place I enjoy cheerleading the most. Each year we’re faced with different challenges, and it’s amazing to watch your team overcome these speed bumps and be successful. As the National Championship is quickly approaching, I don’t think I’ve had as much faith in a team to do so well at the national level, than the faith I have in this 2016-2017 team.

i I’m Deeba Rustemi I’m a junior in high school and this is my second year on the Varsity cheerleading team. This team is very important to me. This is a team that wants nothing but the best for you and will support you in everything from sports to growing as a person. They will always push you to be better and always help you in any way possible The coach continues to teach me things not only for cheerleading but for everything you could think of. I have grown such a bond and trust with my coach that I can tell her anything and she will always be there to help and support me. This team has made a great impact in the my life. We have grown so close and I’m so grateful to come to practice with a team of girls that I feel so close with, because we are all friends. Through this sport, I learned how to prioritize my time and learned to make the most of it. This sport taught me that if you want to succeed in something the only way to do it is with dedication and hard work. It taught me to always be optimistic and always push yourself to be better. As a team our goal is to be better than we were last season, and be better then we were yesterday. As for now my plans is to continue cheering throughout the rest of my high school career. For our football halftime routines we always find a something to support from a tribute to 9/11 victims or to show our support to breast cancer fighter, and walking in breast cancer fundraisers. I think that’s how we can make the world a better place, by showing our support for anyone and everyone.

I went from no tumbling to a standing tuck and round off back handspring tuck. I’m so happy to be committed to this team. I love every single person on this team insanely. I wouldn’t want to spend endless amounts of time with any other 18 girls including coach . I’m so happy to be a part of this team, I love everyone so much and I cannot wait for the next 3 years of CHSVC with my freshies and of course Tori. This team is like my second family. We fight, laugh, and get annoyed with each other all the time. This team spends 12 or more hours together per week, people who aren’t on this team think we are insane for cheering from the end of August all the way through March. We work hard and give it our all and we have for the 8 months that we are together. I have learned so many things from my first year on this team always stay humble, practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect, the work is worth it, and always have fun. My goals are to make mat next year, gain more tumbling skills, and to learn as many things as I can in cheerleading. My goals for my team is that we make it straight through at nationals and go to states. I hope to become captain my senior year and lead my team to victory at regionals, nationals, counties, and states. I plan to cheer for all four years of my high school career. POCONOS REGIONAL DIVISION WINNER 2016

58

D

ecember 4th 2016, CHSVC competed in the Poconos at the Regional Championship. This was the first competition for the team at the start of the winter season. The routine was very clean with only two slight bobbles that were recovered and saved, to prevent a fall. This made all of the difference for the team. This fight gained CHSVC a full out hit routine at their first performance ever. The girls became regional champions and brought home a banner to hang in the high school gymnasium. They also received an automatic bid to Disney to compete at Nationals. It was not the bid, the banner, or the trophy that made the victory so sweet. It was the title that named this years team Regional Champions for 2016.

The girls took home first place and were very excited about their victory. CHSVC beat Plainedge varsity which was their biggest competitors throughout the season. At this point the girls were 2-0 holding up the first place spot.

CLARKE CHEERLEADING COMPETITION 66

D

ecember 17th 2016, we competed at Clarke High School, our home territory. We not only hosted the competition but competed as well in our division. A lot of friends and family came to watch, as this competition was at our own school. Our athletic director also attended the entire session to watch the team perform. The girls hit their most energetic and strongest routine yet. The crowd was roaring as middle school and junior varsity team was sitting at the front of the mat cheering them on. It was such an amazing feeling to hit our entire routine for our friends and family in our own school. The girls took home another first place title and were on a 3-0 winning streak. Josh Friedman congratulated the girls on their victory and told them it was very evident that they deserved the win. The girls enjoyed the support from such a successful turn out, and they raised a ton of money for their trip to nationals. It was a successful day of fundraising and competition for the girls.

CLARKE CHEERLEADING AT SMITHTOWN EAST HS

68

1/28/17, CHSVC competed at Smithtown East high school. The girls worked so hard to get their difficulty back, after major obstacles the week before at competition. The team was finally back together and they were ready to debut their nationals routine. The girls added their switch up single based libs for the first time. They added their double ups and their high to high full arounds. They were unable to add their 360 single based libs and the girls were told they were performing them illegally moments before performing in warm ups. The girls were able to change the routine to straight up single bases first try. The girls are that talented that they never let anything set them back. They adapted to every change and challenge that was thrown their way. They added their 360 libs for the first time in the cheer and at this competition was the first time our pyramid was performed with all the difficulty. Our pyramid was said to be the most difficult pyramid in Nassau County cheerleading. The girls were able to implement all of that difficulty in just one week. The routine was completely changed and advanced in every way. They had two falls this competition, but the girls were so proud of everything they accomplished that day. This competition was the first competition that Clarke varsity performed the most difficulty CHSVC had ever done. This was a major accomplishment for the team. They took second place at this competition and knew that even though they did not place first, they were growing their program and doing things they had never done before. The girls were extremely proud they were competing things that no other team in their division was doing. The Smithtown East coach came over to the team and told them they should be incredibly proud of themselves because they looked amazing. The girls were ecstatic to get such wonderful compliments from other well respected teams. People were truly realizing what this team was capable of and how talented they truly are.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2/11/17 the girls competed at the Nationals Championship of High School Cheerleading. The girls got on an emergency flight the same day as a massive snow storm and didn't let anything come between their biggest event of the season. They were determined to compete at this championship and show the nation what they have worked for all season. The team performed the most difficulty that has ever been competed on the nationals mat in the history of Clarke varsity cheerleading. At prelims the girls had one fall and the girls managed to fight to save a major bobble in the pyramid. The girls ability to fight for everything in the routine was a key reason that they moved on to the semifinal round. They were ranked 6th in their bracket. When all three brackets were placed together in the semifinal round the odds became much more difficult. The girls went out in the semifinal round and gave it everything they had. The routine had two falls, but the routine was still mesmerizing in so many ways. The girls cheer was beautiful beyond belief and the team was able to execute their pyramid better than they had ever performed it before. The girls ranked 16th in the Nation that day. More than anything, the girls were proud of the reputation that they had created for their school. Teams around the nation were complimenting them on their ability and sequences in the routine. Teams from out of state were finally starting to recognize the Clarke Varsity cheerleaders. Bringing this presence to the National Competition was one of the teams greatest accomplishments and proudest feelings.

FINAL COMPE

76

ETITION 2017 2/25/2017, CHSVC competed at their final competition for the season. The team decided to water down their difficulty after Nationals and go with a routine that would have more probability to stay in the air. We were bringing strategy instead of difficulty at this competition. The routine was still hard in the sense that CHSVC still had more difficulty than any other team they were competing against. The routine had two falls, in areas that were not usually inconsistent. When it came to execution this was our cleanest routine. The District Athletic Director, Christi Detour came to watch and she said she was very impressed by the ability that the team had. She even stated that administrators from different schools were giving her the nicest compliments on how incredible Clarke varsity cheerleading has done this season. The girls took second place at the county championship and were televised on Fios 1. The girls were called up and recognized individually by names and received pins and a plaque for placing second at the county championship. This was the end to an amazing season. The girls were not only able to do things they never imagined were possible, but they were also able to accomplish so much success with such a difficult routine. They made the difficulty look easy and that’s what the girls had only hoped for at the beginning of the season.

They also received an automatic bid to Disney to compete at Nationals. It was not the bid, the banner, or the trophy that made the victory so

2/11/17 the girls competed at the Nationals Championship of High School Cheerleading.

CLARKE CHEERDIN T

oday’s County championship MVP on February 26th 2017 goes to Cassie Roche. Your not just MVP for what you have done today at counties, you are MVP for what you have done for this team all season long. You hands down had the most responsibility out of any athlete in the routine. I need you to know how Rare it is for a high school athlete to being doing as much difficulty in one routine as you did. I can’t even begin to explain what it has been like to get the opportunity to coach such a phenomenal athlete as you. I got to learn such amazing things as a coach that I would have never known, if you weren’t so eager and fast to learn. It has honestly been so incredibly fun to coach you because, you want it and you have always wanted it. I thank you for being the player you are because, athletes like yourself make me so passionate about my job. This season would have never been as successful if it weren’t for you. You are a two time All-County athlete, you are our captain, and the recipient of our “coaches award” because you never fail to give 110% for your coach and your team. Thank you for that and Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP On January 28th 2017 goes to Brianne Courtney. I can’t explain how proud of you I am! You had everyone making sure you would come through and hit all your stunts at competition and you were the ONLY flyer to HIT ALL OUR DIFFICULT!! Not only at this competition, but you were the only flyer to hit every stunt throughout the entire season. It hasn’t come easy for you, you have been through injury and had less practice than anyone on the mat, and you still managed to get your job done! You never ceases to amaze me, you have brought so much talent to this team. I also must say your energy in the cheer is contagious, I could watch you hit your signs and work that cheer showmanship all practice !!! Thank you for being the phenomenal flyer you are. Congratulations MVP

NG 2016-2017 MVPs O

ur Prelims MVP on February 11th 2017 goes to Isabella Rivera. Not only did you become an incredible main base but you also became a legitimate flyer throughout our entire competition season. Finding someone who can fill your shoes and do what you did for us this year is going to be extremely hard. Besides your natural cheerleading ability, you are also an incredible person. From the beginning of the season, you always made me so comfortable coming into the program. It was like an instant closeness and bond that I will never take for granted. You helped me in so many ways this season, from basing, to flying, to doing all the money and even helping me when I was too stressed to coach. Without you I can’t imagine what this year would of been like and I am so proud of everything you did at nationals, because you were a huge reason why we got through prelims. This year you were our treasurer, our scholar athlete, our all division athlete, our most valuable player and our captain. I couldn’t be more proud of the titles you have received and the things you have accomplished. Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP on December 10th 2016 goes to this monster of an athlete Deeba Rustemi !! After dislocating her finger and it being completely sideways, not only did she still compete the next day, but she hit every stunt that she had in the routine and got her job done. We were proud of you just for showing up, but we are amazed by you, that you stuck every stunt and kept us in majority by still throwing your standing tuck! She brings the life and soul to our team with her uplifting and crazy personality. She never fails to make our team laugh when we need it most and she is always ready to do her job and work hard when we need her most like at this competition. Congratulations MVP

O

ur Semis MVP on February 11th 2017 goes to Adrianna Danielo. You are by far the strongest backspot on our team and I wish I had one of you for every stunt group. From the beginning of the year, I have challenged you to back Bella, and Brianne throughout the routine because, I knew that those were going to be the two hardest flyers to get in the air. Not only did you achieve all the stunts that I wanted from you, but you hit them ALL at prelims and semis. I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done for us throughout the season, from all the good times, to the hard ones ( when you got stitches the day of competition ) You were such a trooper to come back just days later and get back on the mat for us so quickly. I know you would do anything for this team. For all of these reason is why you were chosen to be an All-County Athlete. We are so lucky to have you as a captain. Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP on January 14th 2017 goes to Katie Volino! Honestly we would of never been able to go out their and hit our entire routine at this competition if it wasn’t for you. It was incredibly impressive to see you hop in the routine two hours before competition and not only nail the entire routine, but also fill a CAPTAINS position ! I am so happy that you came onto our team for the winter season. You are already so valuable to us in the short time we have been together and we are so lucky to have you. You are a very talented back spot. The things you did at this competition weren’t easy, but we needed you to be able to come through for us and you did ❤ That’s what a reliable teammate is all about. Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP on February 4th 2017 goes to Victoria Berasti. Ever since we added you to our team, you have brought so much talent to the mat. We have watched you learn the entire routine so quickly and jump right into competition season. You started throwing a full that you never even had on dead mat. We have watched you accomplish new skills in our pyramid that we never thought were possible for us at the beginning of the year. I believe that you are the first eighth grader from Clarke to perform THIS MUCH difficulty in a varsity competition! Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP from the Regional Championships on December 4th, goes to Danielle Hallet. This girl has worked so hard since the moment I met her. When she first came on to our team she hardly new how to fly. She wound up achieving every expectation we had for her in our routine and stepped up when we needed her most. Not only did her stunting progress incredibly fast, but she worked her butt off to get her tumbling to the top percentile of our team. She is one of the very few people with a standing tuck and did not stop until she got her roundoff handspring tuck on dead mat. I couldn’t be prouder of my little freshman, she is going to do such amazing things for Clarke varsity Cheer. Congratulations MVP

O

ur MVP of our Home Competition at Clarke on December 17th 2016 goes to Lilliana Fusco !! It is so rare for a flyer to have that much body control and balance that she can save herself from falling out of a stunt that is leaned almost completely backwards. You have come so incredibly far this year because of that commitment and fight that you put in on the mat. You were the first flyer to hit any new stunts that were ever put into our routine. I couldn’t be more proud of everything you have accomplished and for the fight you put up today to get us a perfect hit at competition. Congratulations MVP
