coach’s letter

The 2017 baseball season was successful in many ways. The hard work and countless hours of preparation began in the summer of 2016. The planning for this season started right after our summer camp and we as a coaching staff were excited for we had for the 2017 season. The team started off season workouts in the early fall and transitioned into the weight room for the winter. The hard work and determination was apparent and the team started to bond over the winter. As we approached the start of the season we were excited to see how the team would perform in their first pre-season test in Florida. They didn’t disappoint; we returned from Disney with an understanding of who we were and what our goals were. The season opened with back to back sweeps of St. Mary’s and St. John the Baptist. The early part of the season was dominated by outstanding pitching and defense including extra inning wins against St John’s and Chaminade. The season continued with hard fought games right up to playing for the regular season championship against Kellenberg. After going into the playoffs as the number 2 seed we unfortunately fell short of our goal of a championship. The true measure of what we really accomplished has been watching the development and growth of our players on and off the field and in the classroom. They have always made my coaching staff and myself extremely proud. The legacy of the graduating players is the high standards they have established for the players who follow in their foot steps.

Dear 2017 Varsity Friars,

coach’s letter

Every year I look forward to the upcoming school season and this past one was a special one I looked forward to. Throughout the offseason you guys worked very hard to prepare yourselves for this season. Between workouts in the fall, weight room, student center workouts and hitting on Saturday nights, you guys worked and worked to get ready.

RYAN 8

The roster was made and we got right to work with a team filled with not just talented juniors and seniors but four talented sophomores as well. The season finally came and we were down in Florida playing some real good baseball. I knew this team was special when you guys faced the big pitching prospect going to LSU and you knocked him out in the 3rd inning. When we got back to Long Island the real season began and you guys got off to a very impressive start sending a strong message to the whole league that St. Anthony’s was the team to beat. We went through our ups and downs and came up just shy of being the regular season champions. The playoffs started and things didn’t go as planned for us unfortunately. It was tough for everyone to handle especially the seniors who played their last high school game. Seeing you seniors break down and hugging you guys was heartbreaking. Luckily I kept my sunglasses on (as always) so nobody could see me in tears saying goodbye. You will be greatly missed and very hard to replace. There will always be a special place in my heart for you seniors and I truly look forward to watching you guys succeed in life after high school and grow into successful young men. Even though you guys have graduated and are moving onto college I’m a phone call or text away whenever you guys need anything. To the juniors and sophomores returning next season, the future is very bright and filled with talent. This summer should be a big summer for you guys to develop for the upcoming 2018 season. Just when you think you’re working hard, work even harder. The summer season will fly by and just like that we will begin the offseason workouts preparing for the 2018 season.

GEMMA

To the sophomores, you guys were asked to play a very big role this season at a young age and I am extremely proud of the job you guys did. We have unfinished business to take care of next year and a Catholic League Baseball Championship to capture. I look forward to the future of this team and program and the success we will have. Have a great summer. — Coach Ryan Gemma

It often goes understated how much time and energy our players invest in order to have the opportunity to play baseball for their school. In addition to practices and games after a full day of classes, plus at least one weekend day every week throughout the Spring, our student athletes are working year round individually to do what ever they can to separate themselves. Whether this investment is done out of the love for competition, the pursuit of achieving a championship, the pride of representing the school, the hope of participating in college athletics, or simply for the timeless camaraderie, it should be mentioned every year how admirable the completion of this commitment truly is. How ever the winding story of the season begins, develops and concludes, it is the shared commitment of the entire group of talented coaches and student athletes that reminds me that this is not a job, but an opportunity. The seniors who will be moving on from St. Anthony’s have left a lasting impression that will be with returning Friars as their journey continues. I would like to say thank you and endless respect to the administration and my fellow coaches for whom it was truly a pleasure to collaborate. To all the players, much love and thanks for everything you have given this program, and I embrace the anticipation that you all have so much more yet to achieve. — Coach Kieran Black

eing part of a team is a privilege. It is an opportunity to become part of a family; a family that lifts an individual up to achieve things they could never have achieved on their own. The word “team” means trust, on and off the field. It is a group of individuals who become one unit through thick and thin. The team has influenced me to be the person I am today. It has taught me how to work and communicate with others. It taught me how to listen and learn from teammates’ and coaches’ perspectives. This team has allowed me to grow up and mature beyond my peers. My family has supported me through every decision I have made throughout my life. My father has taught me determination and consistency. And my mother has taught me patience. All these qualities add to the person I am today. — Vincent Barretta

y future goals are to proceed onto college and receive a good education. This is very important to me because it is the framework of future things to come in my life. Receiving good grades is something that is very important to me and that I put my time and effort into. I not only plan on receiving my Bachelors Degree, but also to continue on to Medical School to achieve my aspirations of becoming an anesthesiologist. The word “team” is not something that everybody understands. It is a unique opportunity to play on a sports team and it comes along with many life lessons and values. There comes a point, where everything becomes about the group as one and not only yourself as an individual. Being a part of a team gave me the chance to understand what it is like to put others before yourself. As a team, you are in some ways forced to erase any problems you might have had with another individual because of the common goal that you would like to reach. It becomes more of a family than just a team. My family has always taught me to do the right thing and to be the best person I could possibly be. They have led me on the right path to success and happiness. Without them by my side, I wouldn’t have been able to do half the things I have loved and enjoyed for the past 17 years. They always want what is best for me and I appreciate all the hardships they have gone through for me. I plan on pursuing baseball in college. It has just been something very special to me in my life. To me, baseball is more than just a game, it is a part of life. Whether it’s watching baseball, playing baseball, or even simply talking about the game. It is something that I cherish and that I will love forever. It has brought me friendships and taught me many life lessons. For those reasons, I plan on playing baseball in college. I want to get the most out of the sport and continue playing for as long as I can. — Andrew Balcarcel

fter 4 years of being a Friar, I can honestly say I’m well prepared to start the new chapter of my life. Thanks to my teachers, coaches, friends, and family I’m ready to leave St. Anthony’s and embrace new aspects of life. This upcoming fall I will be attending Providence College in Rhode Island. I am thrilled to be able to call myself a Friar for another four years. At Providence, I plan to major in finance. I plan to join some clubs and hopefully play club golf. To me, the word team goes beyond just a group of guys playing baseball. Being part of the St. Anthony’s baseball team has made me realize that it’s a family. These guys I met freshman year have become my brothers whom I’d do anything for. We’ve won, lost, and battled together for the past 4 years, and I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with anyone else. Becoming a Friar was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I’ll never stop bleeding black and yellow. This team is something really special. When I step in between those lines, every problem of mine goes away, and I can always count on my team to turn a bad day into a good one. When I was a junior last year, I had great captains to show me the ropes and I got to learn what being a leader is all about. I like to think of myself as a leader of this team this year, and with sophomores on this team, I do my best to show a good example. I play a pretty big role on this team, and I can always count on my teammates to give me support and help me out no matter what. We pull for each other and have each other’s back because that’s what being a Friar is all about. My father and brother were also Friars, and my brother played 4 years of baseball at St. Anthony’s. I love being able to follow in his footsteps because there isn’t anyone else I would want to take after or look up to than my brother. He’s my summer baseball coach, role model and my best friend. I can always count on my parents and grandparents to be at my games cheering me on and always having my back. My parents have sacrificed summer after summer and every school break so I can follow my dreams and play the game I love, and I can’t thank them enough. As much as I would love to play college baseball, I will not be pursuing this sport in college. Providence unfortunately doesn’t have a team, but I will be playing this summer and every summer after that until the day I can no longer pick up a baseball. I know I take it for granted, but I was lucky to grow up in a safe and loving community that has done so much for me. There isn’t anywhere else I would want to live and raise a family other than this community when I’m older. I’m excited to see what the world has planned for me, and whatever I pursue in life, I am confident I will be successful because of all the amazing guidance and life lessons I’ve been taught from everyone who has been in my life. Forever bleeding black and yellow, Friars Forever. - Nick Wanderlingh

ver since I was a kid I’ve always dreamed about playing college baseball. Ever since I picked up a bat I knew the game was special for me and it was something that i wanted to be successful in for a very long time. I hope to have a successful career in baseball as i have play in college as well as pursuing my future profession as well. Team to me is more than just a group of guys playing the game that they love, it’s about a special bond as you grow as the season goes on. All trying to achieve the same goal of winning a championship. Everything I do is for the team, whether I have my best game or my worst game I try and figure out a way to contribute in such a way that by the end of the game or end of the season I did everything I could to see my team succeed. This team is one of the most fun, exciting, and best group of guys to be around. This team has a bond that no other team in the league has. Day in and day out everybody works hard and has the right mindset and that puts our team chemistry at a high level as well as my own personal mindset at a high level. This team has really influenced me to be the person I am today by always being positive and always making sure to leave it all out on the table and hold nothing back, and I hope for this to continue in my college career as well. My family has helped me become the person I am today by always supporting me and being there for me when I need them. My family always wants to me succeed in every goal I pursue. Especially my dad, he is my biggest supporter no matter how good or bad I play, or how ridiculous something may sound to him he still wants to push me to work hard to my full potential. I am thankful enough to be playing baseball in college at The University of New Haven. I’d like to thank my coaches, teammates and especially my family for this opportunity.

aseball has always been my family’s favorite sport. I’ve grown up around the game watching my older brothers play. That’s what inspired me to start playing. Once I started playing it became my passion. Playing varsity baseball at St. Anthony’s is a dream come true. I couldn’t ask for better teammates who were always there for me. Playing baseball in college is definitely something I want to do but there is a lot of work to do to get there. — Frank Massa

Also, being part of a team has enabled me to understand my own strengths and weaknesses and has given me the opportunity to improve myself among a group of people who share a common goal despite having different backgrounds and experiences. Being part of a team has given me the opportunity to develop leadership skills that will help throughout my life.

To me “team” means being part of something bigger then each individual, where each team member contributes in their own way. It is learning to work to together to make the team a stronger unit. It is aligning every member’s skills to compliment each other and become cohesive on and off the field as well as to create bonds that will last a lifetime.

Being part of a team has taught me that through hard work and determination it is possible to achieve great things. Also, being part of a team has enabled me to understand my own strengths and weaknesses and has given me the opportunity to improve myself among a group of people who share a common goal despite having different backgrounds and experiences. Being part of a team has given me the opportunity to develop leadership skills that will help throughout my life.
