COACH’S LETTER 6

C
oming into this season, there was definitely a bit of a target on our backs. We had won the previous two league championships and we had lost a ton of key contributors from the previous year. Gone were our three dominant starting pitchers. Gone were all four of our All-League infielders. Obviously, this was the year that Hauppauge would be down as a team.
Good thing for us is that things didn’t exactly work out that way. After losing our first game of the season to East Islip, we went on to win 7 games in a row including the next two against EI, a sweep of West Babylon, and the first two games against Half Hollow Hills West (in which we beat their best pitcher who hadn’t lost a game in almost two years). That took us to the Kings Park series - who was probably the team to beat coming into this year. We took the first two games against them also before losing the third to bring our record to 9-3. Following that series was Eastport-South Manor, who we had not lost to in the previous eight games we played against them. They took two out of three from us and we ended the 3-game series at a very respectable 10-5 record.
Now it’s time to play each of the other five teams again - one game each in the same order. We played East Islip and were down 4-2 in the top of the 7th. With three outs to go, Brett Boller reached on an infield error. Ryan Levenberg bunted him over to 2nd. Matt Overton hit an RBI double. Blake Adamo hit an RBI triple to tie it. Connor Cutino ripped an RBI single to take a 5-4 lead. Overton struck out the side in the bottom of the 7th to finish off the comeback win. It was just what we needed. Levenberg, a freshman, shutout West Babylon the next day to put our record at 12-5. Against HHHW on Thursday, Overton hit a 3 run homer to tie the game at 3 in the 6th inning, but we would lose 4-3 in 8 innings in a well-played game by both teams. After losing to Kings Park again the following Monday, the stage was set for the last game of the season. We were 12-7. ESM was 12-7. The winner would win the league championship. The loser would not. The game did not start off as planned, as we gave up 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Our backs were immediately against the wall. Little by little we came back. We scored 3 in the third to make it 5-3. Adamo hit a huge 2 out 2 strike 2 RBI single the next inning to give us a 6-5 lead. Two innings later, Cutino provided the big blow with a 3 RBI double to make it a 9-5 game. We would go on to win 11-5 and win our third straight League V championship. The post-game celebration was incredible. We did it. We lost so many guys from the previous year, yet we figured out a way to overcome that. Now it’s on to the playoffs and we received the 7 seed in the county for the second straight season. We were matched up against Bay Shore, who we know has a lot of firepower as a team. Levenberg got the start on the mound. After giving up 3 in the top of the 1st, we immediately came back with 2 in the bottom of the inning. After retaking the lead, Cutino once again hit a 3 RBI double on our way to winning 11-5. Next up was Commack - the 2 seed and arguably the most talented team on Long Island. A wonderful pitching performance by Overton wasn’t enough as we lost 2-1. That took us back to an elimination game against Bay Shore. Kevin Sambuco was excellent, but after losing a 3-0 lead and they tied it at 3, the stage was set for some more drama. With Levenberg on 2nd base, Cutino put the ball in play to the 1st baseman who threw wildly to the pitcher covering allowing Levenberg to score the walkoff run in the 4-3 victory. We went back to Commack the next day and gave it all we had. Matt Boyle got his first start of the year and pitched great. Nick Sellitto hit two rocket triples in big spots. We were up 3-0 and 6-4 but couldn’t hold on and eventually lost 7-6. It was a great game by two great teams. While the season ended on a tough loss, nothing could take away what the team had accomplished. A third straight league championship. 2 more playoff wins. Taking down schools twice our size and fighting tooth and nail with others. I left the season incredibly proud and ready to go win a fourth straight league championship!
— Coach Josh Gutes

y future goals are, I plan on continuing to work hard on my baseball skills for my senior year of High School Varsity. I will continue to work hard academically and plan on attending college and be recruited to play baseball at the college level. In college, I will plan for a career in business. To be a part of a team is a privilege. It’s an opportunity to experience the support of teammates and have friends on and off the field. A team creates an atmosphere that lifts and achieves the best performance from each teammate. Each individual has a responsibility to the team that has a common goal. In baseball each player performs individually but the success or failure of the individual affects the team’s outcome. Being a part of the team, the baseball team has influenced me to be a hard worker, a leader, someone who doesn’t give up, and someone who knows how to support others. The support I receive from my team has helped me on the field and in the classroom. The biggest influence in my life is my family. My parents have showed me that giving up is not an option and you should strive to do your best in everything you do. I’ve learned to become an ambitious person even in the toughest positions. I learned you must push through the hard times to achieve your goals and succeed. In the short term, I am very focused on playing baseball with my school team and this summer with my travel team. However, in the future, I would like to earn the opportunity and experience of playing at the college level. I remember when I was young sitting on the hill of Hauppauge High School watching a varsity baseball game thinking I want to be there one day. Now that I am there, I feel I can help the community by being a role model to younger athletes. I would be a positive influence for younger people and stress the importance of self-esteem, team work, and confidence. — Kevin Sambuco

y name is Brett Boller. This is my second year as the starting Centerfielder on the Hauppauge Eagles - a team I love to play on. The word “team” means to have your teammate’s back even in a hard situation. This year’s team had many ups and downs and I think that is why we are so close. Being a part of a team means you do anything to help the team win and always be supportive of each other. The atmosphere Coach Gutes has created for the Hauppauge program is the reason we have been so successful and the reason I love to play for him. He is so into baseball and knows the game better than anyone I know. I have learned to work hard every day to earn my spot on the team. This team made me the person I am by meeting new people of all grades and creating new friendships with people I hadn’t previously known. These friendships will last even after the season is over. Both my mom and dad have been very supportive and helpful in regards to baseball whether it is throwing bp, buying me equipment, or driving me to and from training, practice and games. Without them, I do not know where I would be. I haven’t thought of the future too much, but I’m looking to attend college and playing baseball in college is a possibility. I do not know of an exact major that interests me yet but I am looking to go into a field involving criminal justice. I first want to find the right school that offers what I would potentially like to major in, and then if I can play baseball that would be great. I believe I can make the community a better place by helping the youth of Hauppauge in the summer basketball and baseball sports camps. I would use this time to help the kids in the community understand not only the game they are playing, but also what it means to work hard and support their teammates. This ensures my HS coaches continue to have strong and hard-working athletes on their teams in the future. — Brett Boller

y future goals as a student are to attend college and pursue a career in either engineering or business. To me, the word team means more of a brotherhood, a bond between teammates that brings us closer not only as players, but as friends. This year I could truly say that I have grown closer with every player on this team and formed a bond through amazing memories that will last a lifetime. An important value that I have learned with playing on this team is playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. This team showed me that everyone can shine in different situations. Whether it’s a 3-run shot over the fence, or a sacrifice bunt down the line, everyone contributes to the team in any way possible. I think this year’s team has influenced me in many ways. It helped me develop that extra “Chip on my shoulder” that I never really had, which I feel can definitely help me in my future for when I have a goal to chase after. Putting everything else behind me, I owe everything that I have done and achieved to my family. They have had the greatest impact on my life shaping me as to the person I have become showing me respect and responsibility in all aspects of life. I am beyond thankful as to everything they have done for me so far. As of right now, I am currently undecided as to if I would want to pursue baseball in college. I would either want to play at a competitive level, or club. I feel that I can help the community in a variety of ways. One aspect that I would love to be a part of is teaching the future of Hauppauge Baseball. It would be awesome to see how much this program could grow and continue to produce talented players. — Ryan Mackey

y name is Nick Sellitto. I am on the Hauppauge Varsity Baseball Team. A future goal of mine is to go to play college baseball. This has been a goal of mine for a very long time and it is very important to me. The word “team means many things to me. It means that teammates are working together for one purpose, to win. Being on a team means that you put your teammates first and yourself last. When you are part of a team, you represent that team and what it stands for. This team has influenced me in many ways. The seniors have showed me how to be a leader, a role model, and to never quit. I have learned to be a competitor and humble. My family has always had such a huge impact on my life. They have always been there to support me no matter what I do. They have always influenced me to make good choices and to be a respectful and responsible person. I always want to give back to the community because of what the community has done for me. The Hauppauge community has created a good environment to learn in and play baseball. The Hauppauge community maintained our youth fields and my youth coaches were volunteers who made a difference. One thing that I want to do to make my community a better place is to work with the youth players in Hauppauge to help them learn to play baseball and respect the game. — Nick Sellitto

future goals are: I want to go to college and have a great time, meet great people, and get a great education at University of New Haven. After that, hopefully my end goal will be to make it into the FBI. I want to be able to help people, protect people, and I hope I can do this in the FBI. The word team means everything to me. To me, I believe my team is like my family. You have to all work together to achieve the same goal and have fun while doing it. The team has showed me to work hard and to be dedicated to one goal, and that is to win. My family has done everything for me. They have shaped me to become the man I am today from teaching me right from wrong and from teaching me the game of baseball. I can’t thank them enough for that. I love baseball and I plan on trying out for the baseball team at New Haven and if I don’t make the team, then I will play club baseball. I believe I can make the community a better place by working at the HYO baseball camps and teaching kids how to play the game of baseball the right way, like I have been taught by my dad, my coaches, and my friends. — Carl Mattioli WWW.ULTIMATEATHLETEMAGAZINE.COM

aseball has been my passion since first grade. I love to watch baseball as much as I love playing the game. Over the years I have worked with a lot of coaches and I have learned that no matter what you throw at me, I can handle it and it will only make me stronger. I am happy with who I am and look forward to studying Communications at the University of Hartford in the fall. I thank my parents for their love and support every step of the way. y future goals are to take baseball as far as I absolutely am able to take it, be very successful with it, be a good person, and citizen.
The word team means to me that we are a family and nothing breaks us apart not a fight or conflict. Team also means to me that we are one on and off the field and we always have each other’s backs. The team has turned me into the player I am today by showing me that we always have to stick together, have a good image, and always be there no matter what. I’m pursuing this sport in college at SUNY Ulster. My goal is to be as successful there on and off the field. I could make the community a better place by telling the younger kids to always have their head on their shoulders and do the right thing because you never know who’s watching. I can also make the community better by donating my time to help around the schools and do community service. — Mike Cipoletti

ich Ames, my first coach told me that I should pitch. He instilled confidence in me and took the time to develop me as a player. Since then, I have loved playing baseball, especially pitching. I will be studying Physical Education K-12 at Wesley College in the fall. I am excited to also be playing ball there. I plan to teach and coach a high school team of my own someday.
