Publisher’s Note SANDRA G. MALHOTRA, Ph.D

Wow! Right? 2016 was quite the year. Seems nearly everybody was fired up about something and there was a lot of noise being generated, whether it be in the form of protests (some of which turned into riots once the anarchists showed up), petitions, social media rants, screaming arguments or even assaults. 2016 ended with a very high decibel level indeed — the loudest that I can remember as a Gen X’er. This has led me to think about how this fire can be channeled. Think about it — a fire can burn down a forest and leave ashes, or it can burn wood in an oven and create a nourishing meal. It can be destructive or constructive. At present, I fear it is being used destructively and will eventually burn itself out without leaving behind any positive change. That would be a shame because we have the opportunity to channel this energy into something meaningful. Let’s not blow it. But how? I admit that it’s easy to get mad at injustice and want to act out. But here’s the thing — if you believe that someone or some organization is behaving in a vile way, and if you respond by acting vile, then you are no better. You are not justified. In fact, you are part of the problem because hate begets hate; the pattern will continue and down into the rabbit hole we’ll all go. Meaningless. Our great leaders realized all of this and tried to teach us: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” — Martin Luther King Jr. “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. We need not wait to see what others do.” — Mohandas Gandhi

To me, this means we should always take the higher road of love. If enough of us do this, the world will change. However, there’s more to it than that — we need to come from a place of love, but also interact with the world in a smart and conscious way. Singing Kumbaya and sending out loving vibes into the universe isn’t sufficient. It’s a great start. But we need to take our activism into the marketplace. Want to be a rebel? Here are some ideas — none of which involve screaming and yelling: Look inward and do the self work which will allow you to come from a place of compassion. SCREW the media establishment that wants to rile up, divide, and control us. Grow an organic vegetable garden and buy from a local regenerative farmer whenever possible. SCREW Big Ag and Big Food — they are destroying the planet for personal gain. Bastards. Buy Fair Trade, second-hand, or made in America clothing and housewares. Might it be more expensive? Yes — so buy less and SCREW the multi-national corporations and their sweat shops that enslave people around the world. Take charge of your health and don’t expect anyone to rescue you with a quick fix after a lifetime of sitting around eating crap. Need I say it? SCREW Big Pharma and their desire to make you a lifelong, ailing customer. So that’s what this issue is about — rebelling by making the daily choices that will lead to positive change. You don’t have to scream to be heard. Let’s make 2017 the year that we rock the world in a deep and meaningful way.

It’s a Winter Wonderland BRAD DOWNS

Winter days in Colorado can seem more confining than those summer days where it’s easy to be active outdoors and eat fresh, healthy food. We have access to great summer activities like hiking, biking, and trail running. But, if you think that summer is the only time to be active outdoors, you're missing out on half of the fun! The Northern Front Range mountains in winter are just as glorious as they are during the summer, maybe even more so. You just need to be a little more prepared for the action.

We are blessed to have downhill and backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, ice climbing, and much more during the winter. In this article, we focus on one of the most enjoyable and easiest activities to start — snowshoeing. Snowshoeing trails are abundant in the Northern Font Range and you don't need expensive equipment to get started. If you like to hike in the summer, you'll love snowshoeing. It offers the same beautiful scenery and serenity as hiking does, and it adds more to the fitness aspect.

Getting Started Snowshoeing requires little more than a pair of snowshoes, winter attire, and a desire for fun and activity. You’ll need a winter jacket, snow pants, stocking caps, gloves, scarf, and winter boots. Layering your clothing for winter activities is

the best approach to staying warm. Outer layers like jackets, pants, and boots should be waterproof, while your inner layers should be warm and moisture wicking. Snowshoes vary in price by materials and skill level and range form $60-$250 depending on the options. You can also rent snowshoes inexpensively at numerous area stores, like Outpost Sunsport and Jax Outdoor Gear, for $12-$15 per day. Pack a small backpack with water, snacks, maps, and extra layers. And remember — the most important things to bring along with all of your gear and nutrition is a joyful attitude and desire to spend a beautiful day in the mountains!

Nutrition and Hydration Eating healthy and staying hydrated should be a part of your daily life, not just for your winter activities. Drinking plenty of water

and consuming a diet of real, whole foods, like fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and high quality (i.e. not factory farmed) proteins. While preparing for your day of snowshoeing, be sure to be hydrated and nourished so that you will be full of energy on your trek. Drinking 64100 ounces of water and consuming extra complex carbohydrates the day before your trip will be helpful to your performance. Eating a breakfast that is light and nutritious in the morning will add to your energy — something like peanut butter on gluten-free toast with a banana is a good example of a quick and easy pre-hike breakfast. While you are snowshoeing, be sure to keep drinking water because even at a slow pace snowshoeing will burn calories and deplete your water reserves. Be sure to bring a hydration bladder or bottles of water with you in your backpack so that you have

easy access to water. A little trick to keep warm and happy is to tuck a thermos of your favorite hot beverage like tea or coffee into your pack to enjoy on your breaks. Bringing simple, fast processing, carbohydrate loaded snacks to eat during your breaks will help keep your energy up as you move. Fresh fruit, dried fruit, trail mix, and healthy granola bars are great midhike snacks. If you are planning on a 5 to 20-mile trek, take extra precautions and bring more food and water than you expect to consume. A post exercise snack or meal on the way back home will help your muscles recover from the exertion. Protein and carbohydrate rich foods are the best to consume during this time. Protein will help repair your muscles while the carbohydrates will replenish your energy stores. As always, you should include protein, fat, and carbohydrates in all of your snacks and meals. Our bodies rely on these macronutrients to run and perform at an optimal level.

stop for a short break. Sweat combined with cold air can drastically increase your chances of developing hypothermia, a deadly condition. Be sure to know your fitness and skill level, and pick your trail and pace accordingly.

Health Benefits Being active outdoors in the winter is not only fun, it provides great health benefits to your body. Our bodies respond to activity in

and visit the Big South trailhead. This beautiful 6-7 mile out and back will get you away from the crowds and into the deep wilderness. The trail climbs and descends throughout the hike as it takes you along the South Fork of the Poudre River and through the thick forest. The Big South Trail will leave you filled with joy and a feeling of trekking through true mountain wilderness. For a steeper and more advanced trail, check out Montgomery Pass high up the Poudre Canyon. This trail climbs steadily for 2.5 miles before reaching the open saddle of Montgomery Pass and the surrounding Diamond Peaks. From there you can hike to the summit or continue along the ridges exploring the peaks. Be sure to check avalanche conditions, bring plenty of food and water, and be prepared for open, stunning views. With it's steep trail, high altitude, and exposure to winter conditions, this hike is sure to challenge and please any advanced snowshoer. Other great trails to note are: Michigan Ditch, Blue Lake, Gem Lake, and Odessa Lake. This abbreviated list of snowshoeing trails is only a drop in the bucket of what the Northern Front Range has to offer. You can find directions and more information on these and more amazing trails at www.trails.com and www.alltrails.com. Get out and enjoy them all!

A post exercise snack or meal on the way back home will help your muscles recover from the exertion.

Fitness Snowshoeing is an activity that can be performed by people of any age, fitness, and skill level. Beginners should start with shorter, flat trails that will allow them to learn the movements and feeling of snowshoeing. As you move up to more intermediate and advanced levels you can opt for longer trails with more incline and challenging features. A key to staying warm while snowshoeing is controlling your pace and heart rate zone. You want to keep your pace and heart rate in a zone where you are moving fast enough to stay warm, but slow enough to not sweat too much. If you start to lose your breath or sweat,

numerous positive ways. Our muscles, lungs, bones, and heart grow stronger, our hormones release mood enhancing endorphins, and our blood circulates better throughout our system. Proper nutrition and an active lifestyle help to reduce our chances of disease and illness.

Trails There are an incredible number of great snowshoeing trails along the Northern Front Range. From beginners looking for entry level fun to advanced snowshoers looking for a challenge, the Northern Front Range has it all. A great trail for beginners is Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. This area has a vast network of trails that are relatively flat and have unbelievable views. The main trail system is a 1 to 4-mile hike around Bear Lake, depending on your trail choice. If you are looking for a more lengthy and challenging hike, you should head up the Poudre Canyon

What is Yoga Therapy? SANDRA G. MALHOTRA AND ENA BURRUD, E-RYT500, C-IAYT

Are you familiar with yoga therapy? Until recently, I wasn’t either. That is, until I had the pleasure of meeting Ena Burrud, E-RYT500, C-IAYT, owner of Treetop Yoga Therapy, a full time private practice in Old Town Fort Collins. Over coffee, she described the difference between conventional yoga and yoga therapy and I knew I had to share this information with Regenerate readers. What follows is a detailed description of this modality as conveyed by Ena.

Ena, can you describe the yoga therapy methodology? Sure. A typical intake includes an assessment of constitution, or dosha, according to Ayurveda, to determine body type and imbalance. Though Ayurveda is its own preventative science, yoga therapy integrates the concepts. Yoga therapy customizes poses (asana), pacing and sequencing (vinyasa krama), breathing exercises (pranayama) and therapeutic forms of meditation. Trauma can cause dissociative symptoms making it difficult to feel emotions and physical sensations, so specific cuing helps to re-pattern neuronal pathways for sensory information. Language like “feel the weight of the body… now feel the lightness of the body”. Traversing between these and other opposites of sensations is partially derived from yoga nidra, a guided meditation protocol that awakens both hemispheres of the brain to fire

equally, restoring balance to all systems of the body. Clinical studies have proven the benefit of movement to soften trauma symptoms. Tissues fill with hormones and chemicals during stress, but a pattern can be set by the intensity of trauma. Then, future stressors may copy that pattern even when danger isn’t present. The inner dialogue sounds like this: “I AM safe. Why don’t I FEEL safe?” Frustration sets in. Trauma specialists like American psychologist Peter A. Levine and Dutch psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk describe anecdotes where somatic practices diminish symptoms of PTSD. Yoga therapy uses these studies with the ancient exercises in texts like the Yoga Sutras and Hatha Yoga Pradipika. You tend to work on an individual basis. What are the benefits of the individual approach? Group yoga classes are fantastic. They plumb our inner landscape and

help maintain overall health. The connection made with a teacher is psychologically beneficial, as is the community built with other students. However, if a student in a class setting is triggered, the teacher may not have time or training to safely meet the needs of the student in that environment. I worked with a student who had lower back pain who saw her abuser when she closed her eyes, so her needs were best met privately and therapeutically. Having assessed there was no injury or specific event that precipitated her lower back pain, we palpated the strength of her psoas and using physiology techniques and esoteric knowledge of the chakras, or wheels of energy aligned with nerve plexuses, we implemented practices that process emotions that may have pulled the psoas “off-line”. Using breath holding and micro-movements we did sequencing that calmed the mind and strengthened skeletal muscles to stabilize her sacrum. With

the physical moves, the breath and mental focus working in tandem, her psyche brought up those memories in manageable pieces. She experienced a capacity to welcome them and noticed their fleeting nature.

met their mission of standardizing yoga therapy schools to require at least 2 years and 800 hours of training for accreditation. LMU in LA and MUIH in Maryland offer yoga therapy as a master’s programs.

Ena, what educational levels denote the differences between a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist?

Does yoga therapy complement conventional treatments well?

A yoga teacher is trained at the 200- or 500-hour level, including adapting poses. He may be skilled to teach private sessions. The governing body recording the training is Yoga Alliance (www.Yogaalliance.org). The designation 200 or 500RYT (registered yoga teacher) is awarded. After 1000 hours have been taught at each level, the designation of ERYT200 or 500 is awarded, (E means experienced). E-RYT500 hour teachers are eligible to teach advanced yoga

Yoga therapy does not diagnose or replace the medicine or guidance of a doctor. Yoga conditions the body through physical and contemplative practices as old as 5000 years. Yoga therapy requires continued regular personal practice to be effective, unlike taking meds alone. Sometimes these practices are better begun while on medicines, like those for bipolar disorder, hypertension and thyroid disorders. In time, many clients report that symptoms soften and with commitment to the

As of 2016, however, Yoga Alliance does not recognize any yoga therapy or represent any therapeutic training on their registry. A yoga therapist enters a program with a pre-requisite 200-hour certification. The governing body representing yoga therapy is the International Association of Yoga Therapists (www.iayt.org). Since 1989, this organization has focused on research and presentation of evidence-based therapeutic applications of yoga. It publishes two bi-annual and quarterly periodicals plus posts on PubMed. practice, may diminish. Yoga folds the changes of our bodies and lives into the practice as we find humor and acceptance with these shifts. Conventional western medicine supports our needs with disease, broken bones, tumors, etc., thankfully. It can save our lives. Yoga therapy has practices that aid our determination to heal and can prevent future suffering even if a condition is chronic. What types of conditions do you help your clients overcome? How often are appointments?

move into monthly appointments to refine their practices and to chart progress. Those with cancer come in to offset the side effects of chemo and continue to address the trauma of the disease. Yoga therapists often focus on niche practices for issues such as mood disorders, trauma and PTSD, chronic pain, injury or surgery rehab. Some yoga therapists practice ancient techniques like hand gestures (mudras), chanting (japa) and spiritual mentorship. With newer recognition of the power of yoga for therapy because of the tremendous work of IAYT, doctors, physical therapists, psychologists and other western medical providers are referring their patients to yoga therapy. Some insurance companies pay for yoga for therapeutic reasons, but often the research for a certified yoga therapist is the onus of the patient. Check IAYT’s website for one in your community. Thank you, Ena! I hope that knowledge about this powerful modality becomes more widespread so that yoga therapists, like you, can facilitate more mental and physical healing. A yogi for two decades, Ena Burrud, E-RYT500, C-IAYT has taught since 2000 in Southern California and Colorado. In 2007, she opened Treetop Yoga in Fort Collins, and in 2010 earned her Yoga Therapy certificate rebranding the business Treetop Yoga Therapy, a full time private practice. Ena is faculty for basic and advanced trainings, and in 2014, completed her iRest® certificate, a military adopted protocol for PTSD. Since then she has been Paralympic grant-funded and referred vets by the VA for regular group and private services. She can be reached at www.treetopyogatherapy.com

Does Moving Your Body Feel DELICIOUS? LISA PONICHTER

It’s a new year. Many of us make resolutions which include wellness and fitness goals. However, these can go by the wayside due to scheduling. But how many give up a new health practice because it doesn’t feel good?

It’s hard to feel delicious in a yoga class if your hips are protesting a particular movement. Or how about that ache in your shoulder after having enrolled in golf lessons. Who needs that? What if you could start new moves that helped you get back to what you love doing in an easier and pleasurable way? I discovered that moving can feel as enjoyable as eating the finest and tastiest food. Imagine moving in a way that nourished your body as opposed to hurting it. My life was transformed by a unique movement approach. Not only was I able to sit through classes without pain, but I was able to return to dancing! I felt my body as never before and took pleasure in every movement. This brilliant method was invented by Moshe Feldenkrais, who said, “When we know what we are doing, we can do what we want.” Instead of pushing into pain in that yoga pose, you’d modify your movement until you became more flexible and learned how to breathe where it was easier. Instead of forcing a golf swing, you’d learn to move smoothly and gently through the parts of your body which participate in this particular movement. These movement awareness explorations can be done hands-on or through verbally guided classes. The process makes the experience of our movements more pleasurable. This is done simply by placing awareness on what we are feeling as we experience the patterns. How can playing with movements make them delicious

or feel great? The answer is in the manner in which we explore those movements. What helps to create the shifts to greater pleasure is to notice what you are doing and where you are moving from in your breath, without tensing muscles first, moving at a slower pace and gradually building speed. Breathing is an important part of movement, as everything is better supported by it. Another golden nugget is not pushing into pain. When we push into pain, the brain shifts into defense mode and muscles automatically tighten in protection. This makes it more difficult for pleasurable and efficient movement to occur. With these things in mind, try one or both of the Awareness Through Movement explorations below.

Breathing is an important part of movement, as everything is better supported by it.

“It’s easier to act yourself into a new way of thinking versus think yourself into a new way of acting” — Jerry Sternin Depending on what particular quality you’d like to embody this new year, here are some suggestions: Need more confidence? Try exercises which open up the breastbone and rib cage. It’s hard to look confident let alone feel confident if you are slouched. Try this: Lie on your back and bend your knees. Notice how the back is arched without trying to change it. Begin to tilt your tailbone up towards the ceiling and then come back to where you started or what is called a neutral position. www.RegenerateMagazine.com • January/February 2017 • Regenerate

15

Notice how it flattens the back. Do this several times while breathing. Rest. Then move your tailbone in the opposite direction by pressing it down towards the floor between your knees. Feel how the back arches. Do this several times, breathing. Rest. Now connect the two directions by going back and forth. Feel the rise and fall of your back. Notice if you are holding your neck still. If so, let it go. Allow the movements to travel all the way up to your head so when your tailbone moves up your chin also lifts, and when your tailbone goes down your chin follows. Play with these movements at different speeds. This does not mean tensing up. Keep it slow and in a small range if you notice pain or tension. Remember try to do what is easy and this will naturally grow into more feel-good moves provided there is no strain. This is training the body to use its bones and this is where real strength originates. Now try those same exercises while sitting. Feel how your chest rises as you kick your tailbone out behind you as breathe and move in a comfortable range. Can you feel yourself getting shorter when you let your tailbone go forward? Going back and forth, notice the rise and fall of your chest. You will find your own neutral while playing with this. Most people slouch or collapse through the breastbone. Sensing the power from the pelvis and spine will lift your upper body and give you that boost of confidence you need to ask out that person you’ve had your eye on! Want to add some sexiness to your swagger? Try some side-lying movement explorations which mimic what we do while we are walking. Lying on your side helps gain smoothness and reminds the whole spine to participate. Try this: Lie comfortably on your side with both knees bent up towards your chest and both arms out in front of you. One lying on top of the other. If there is pain or strain, try a pillow between your arms or knees or both. Begin to move your shoulder and pelvis forward and backward simultaneously rolling like a log. Do this several times and rest. Then move the shoulder and pelvis in the opposite direction... the shoulder moves forward as the pelvis goes backward and then the shoulder moves backwards as the pelvis moves forward. Always remember to breathe as you go and making movements smaller should you experience pain or discomfort. You can try changing the positioning of your arm and knees in the direction of either your head or feet. Basically, they can be at any angle. Notice how changing their position changes what parts of your back you feel the movements in. Over time practice making

these movements easier and gentle. Do not force but instead allow. Breathe as you move and explore in an easy range. Ask yourself how you could move with more pleasure? Now get up and walk. Notice what feels different. You can do this lying on the other side, too. Practice it 10 minutes a day. You’re bound to have someone notice your smooth moves and you’ll feel much more alive and articulated. And possibly, even sexier when you walk! “We play with movement patterns until the pattern of pain moves away” — Lisa Ponichter Many people come to me in pain. As we find smaller and smaller movements which don’t increase pain nor activate the brain’s defense mechanism, we can begin to step out of the pain cycle and into something new. The next time you reach for something, notice if you are using as much of your whole self in the movement. Are you breathing? Play with the idea of how you can make your moves more delicious for yourself. There is always hope for improved movement and feeling better than when you started. Just as a baby begins with very little movement control and coordination, we too can re-learn helpful movements, smoother coordination, and come back to the juicy, feel-good movements of being supple, flexible, and balanced. Whether you’re looking for grace, precision, power, or less pain… it’s attainable to you in the new year and I encourage you to follow me or other Feldenkrais practitioners on YouTube. Explore delicious movements in live classes, or enjoy hands on sessions for MORE of what YOU want in this new year!

When we push into pain, the brain shifts into defense mode and muscles automatically tighten in protection.

“Making the impossible possible, the possible easy and the easy elegant” — Moshe Feldenkrais Lisa Ponichter is a PT and Feldenkrais Practitioner in Royal Oak, MI. Transformation occurs at Awakening Movements through individual sessions and group workshops called “Joy of What you Love”. Pay It Forward Having a passion for service, Jennifer Kelly, a REALTOR® with Keller Williams Northern Colorado, chooses to make a difference in the community that she lives and works.

At an early age, Jennifer Kelly volunteered her time for Special Olympics events and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and a Master’s Degree in Education, both from Colorado State University. Jennifer has lived and worked in Northern Colorado for 30 years, has been actively involved with youth, and continues to support non-profit organizations, including being a board member for the Center for Family Outreach. The Center for Family Outreach was established in December 2000 as a private, not-for-profit agency offering services and education for Larimer County at-risk youth, ages 818, and their families. The Center provides one-on-one supervision/mentoring, intervention, education and support services for youth and families struggling with substance abuse and high-risk adolescent behavior. Classes at The Center focus on life skills development, drug and alcohol education, building self-esteem,

anger management as well as addressing bullying and gang involvement. The Center offers cognitive group therapy, art enrichment, and workshops designed to improve parenting and grandparenting skills and healthy communication within families. Some young people at The Center are completing Diversion programs, mandated by the district attorney, which are intended to discourage future problematic behavior. The Center is proud to be part of the diversion program, working hand-inhand with the court system to keep kids out of detention, helping them learn new skills and move in a positive direction with the assistance of the experienced staff and programs at The Center. About 600 kids and their families are served every year at The Center, class sizes are small, enabling individual attention for every student. Programs are designed to span a 7, 12 or 32 week interval, with the length of the program tailored to

meet the needs of the individual. These young people and their families are struggling with issues like sobriety, homelessness, anger, out-of-control behavior and diminished life skills. Our referrals come from families, churches, schools, local law enforcement, the probation office, the office of the district attorney and the courts. Four Horseshoes Pet Services SLOAN FOLEY What we do for our customers: Pet Sitting, energy and body work your pets. Compassionate pet sitting is our top priority Your animals, whether too big for the house or small as a mouse, are part of your family, and it can be stressful leaving them behind when you go on a trip. We want to give you peace of mind while you are away, knowing that your animals, and home, are being compassionately cared for. We specialize in horses and small farm care, but welcome all pet sitting clients.

We also practice energy and body work, which rebalances the body from the inside out While attending Front Range Community College, I learned about their unique degree in Holistic Health. As I explored this fascinating world that offered alternatives like aromatherapy, homeopathy and energy work, I began to contemplate the possible applications they could have on animals. Through the help of a fellow equine lover, I began to discover energy work, this powerful healing art that comes in many forms. My first introduction was through a

Cranio-sacral therapy workshop, which led me to take classes in Reiki and High Touch Jin Shin at Front Range. I was apprehensive at first, coming from a family of scientists, but I had to explore further. This led me to embark on a 6 month long case study that became my capstone project for my degree. I took 8 horses, with various levels of pain, and performed Jin Shin on them at different intervals. The results were amazing and went beyond just the pain these animals were feeling. Communication with their riders increased, they had better interactions with their herd mates, and overall energy increased! I learned that these wonderful arts don’t just work on horses and humans, but all animals, from tiny mice to huge cows. Contact me to discuss how I can care for your animals with compassionate sitting or energy work to help them through challenges. I’d love to hear from you! Eat Well

THE GARDEN JUICERY PHOTO: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU

Wonder Twin Powers — Activate! The Garden Juicery and Wunder Juice are Combining Forces FOODIE HAPPENINGS, SANDRA G. MALHOTRA I am a huge fan of Barry Lewis’ Garden Juicery in the Scotch Pines Shopping Center and Andrea Ridder’s Wunder Juice service, and was thrilled to learn they are joining forces. I sat down with them to discuss their plans so that I could share what is in store (no pun intended!) for our community.

I was struck by how mission driven both Andrea and Barry are; this isn’t just a business to them, it’s a calling that they pour their hearts and souls into. They both experienced health issues that nutrient-dense juices helped them to overcome and want to help others heal as well. Andrea and Barry also share the core belief that a healthy physical body facilitates emotional and spiritual growth. In order to reach higher levels, the body needs to thrive first. Both Andrea and Barry established organic juice businesses to help others on their journey to robust health, but took different approaches. Barry opened the beautiful retail space, and Andrea started a subscription and delivery service. This year, they realized that they could make a bigger impact working together rather than separately. Their joint vision is to provide a venue for clean eating that has organic raw vegan offerings in addition to Paleo offerings (both gluten and dairy free). Lest anyone think that Paleo has no business in a vegan juice bar — think again. Paleo diets are heavy in vegetables but contain animal protein on the side. In fact, a respected Integrative M.D. named Dr. Mark Hyman considers a vegan + paleo diet optimal for many people, and refers to it

as PAGAN. By expanding the menu to offer clean Paleo foods, they can nourish even more people. The options at the Garden Juicery will therefore expand and include organic superfood smoothies, fresh juices, teas, coffee, and homemade nut milks PLUS soups, bone broth, wraps, pot pies, and grass-fed meatballs and sauce. (Other items are in the planning stages!) The goal is to provide organic nutrient-dense foods that are not processed and don’t contain sugar — everything you should put into your body and none of the junk that you shouldn’t. Andrea and Barry each offered their own cleansing programs and are working on streamlining their offerings to remove redundancy and expand into system-specific cleanses, such as a liver cleanse. If you are interested in starting off the new year with a cleanse, then be sure to stop by The Garden Juicery to get advice and get started. The point that Andrea and Barry emphasized is that they want to be a provider of functional food as medicine, and even referred to the Juicery as a Food Apothecary. They are looking to establish relationships with healers of all types in the community who want to work with them to use food as medicine for their patients. Often the role of

nutrient-dense foods is overlooked for those overcoming illness, and it should not be. If you are a wellness provider, reach out to them because they would love to hear from you. Another fabulous aspect of The Garden Juicery and Wunder Juice collaboration is their commitment to our community. They have opened up the bright, airy retail space for meet-ups and gatherings. The staff is paid above the going rate, so tips are forwarded to the Larimer County Food Bank and nonprofit Dance Express. Andrea sits on the board of local non-profits. They pride themselves on going from farm to table to farm — in other words, gathering organic produce from local farms whenever possible; using it; and then making the waste available to farmers for animal feed or compost. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful source of nourishing and healing food. I know from my travels that not every community can boast of such an establishment. If you haven’t yet visited The Garden Juicery, then make it a resolution for 2017! You’ll be happy that you did. Sandra G. Malhotra is the owner and publisher of Regenerate Magazine. She lives to eat, if you haven’t noticed.

Time for Comfort Food ERICA GAGNE GLAZE Regardless of the weather, there is a certain point in the season when comfort food becomes mandatory. There is a time when something in the body just clicks and demands nourishment and warmth. There must be some cellular clock that says fatten me up for the long dark days ahead. Rather than reaching for the junk food, reach into your winter stockpile and dish up a meal that feels like your favorite sweater or a long-loved friend. My favorites are cheese, soup, and amazing crusty doughy bread. Here are a couple of recipes highlighting my winter favorites — grilled cheese and soup. Grilled Cheese — sounds a bit simple perhaps? This isn’t your childhood Wonderbread and American cheese. I’m talking grilled cheese for adults, and considering we’re using Longview Creamery’s Funkwerks cheddar, you may want to card your dinner guests. It’s all in the ingredients. Start off with your favorite fresh baked bread. I recommend the spinach garlic loaf, a local favorite from Ingrained Bakery in Wellington. Don’t forget to get a square of their fresh churned butter. Then, if you like a little local craft flavor, grab a block of Funkwerks cheddar from Longview Creamery. Not into a sudsy flavored cheese? There are a number of local cheese options out there to suit your taste. Grab your cast iron pan and melt up a generous dab of that fresh churned butter. Take your first piece of bread and rub it around into the buttered up pan. Layer your cheese and any other extras you’d like (tomato, bacon, green chilies) and place your second piece on top. I cook low and slow to make sure that cheese turns into melty goodness and warms up the additions I layer in. For the first minute I cover the pan to help with the melting, then I keep flipping and adding butter to the pan until I have crispy golden perfection. And, what goes best with grilled cheese? That would be soup. 1 ½ lbs of acorn squash, peeled and chopped into chunks (or any winter squash you have sitting on the counter) 1 lb. carrots (Native Hill Farms carrots are exceptionally good this time of year), peeled and chopped 2 yellow onions, chopped

3 garlic cloves (or more) chopped 4 sprigs of fresh thyme 2 tbs. basil chopped 1 tbs. parsley chopped Sea salt and ground pepper (Old Town Spice Shop has a great selection of salts and peppers!) ¼ cup olive oil 4 cups chicken broth, preferably homemade (and extra for thinning) 6 oz. chopped bacon, thick cut, hickory smoked In a preheated 425 degree oven roast the squash, carrots, onions, garlic and herbs with 1 tsp salt and pepper, and drizzled with the olive oil and tossed to coat. Roast about 45 minutes, stirring a couple times during roasting. Once the veggies are done roasting, let cool and discard the thyme sprigs. Transfer to a pot and add the broth. Either using an immersion blender or your normal blender (in batches) puree the soup until smooth. Add more broth as needed to obtain your desired consistency. Cook over medium-low heat, about 10 minutes, until your soup is warmed through. In a separate pan cook up the bacon pieces until crispy (not burnt, crispy). When done cooking, pat the excess oil off the bacon chunks and use for garnish when soup is ready to eat. Feel free to add a little olive oil drizzle to the soup as well. Then enjoy these two wonderful dishes together. Warning: slightly euphoric and sleepy feeling may follow. Sexual Vitality with Natural Remedies BRIGITTE MARS Valentine’s Day is coming up, so let’s look at ways to enhance the romance with your partner! Of course, sexual energy is essential to being intimate. Low libido can signal the need to increase other means of intimacy. If there are nutritional deficiencies, stress, overwork or exhaustion, sexual desire will also ebb.

According to Asian medicine, the kidneys govern sexual vitality. Their vitality is depleted by the overuse of coffee, alcohol, saturated fats, overwork, lack of sleep and exposure to cold weather. Build health and sexual vitality will follow. When two people pursue good health together, the result is a happier sexual life. Aphrodisiacs are named after Aphrodite, goddess of love, and can work in many ways. A plant’s suggestive shape and texture might inspire sexier thoughts — such as bananas or mushrooms. Many foods nourish sexuality as they correct health deficiencies. Some aphrodisiacs mildly stimulate or even irritate the genital urinary tract and may even have a diuretic effect. Other love tonics provide an abundance of energy and relax the mind. Whole grains are composed of the male and female energies of grass plants and are universal symbols of fertility and abundance. Wild rice, black rice, barley oats and black quinoa are gluten free and are beneficial for sexual vitality. Vegetables that enhance sexuality include asparagus and shiitake mushrooms. In general, roots are good for the lower chakras so

consider burdock, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga and dandelion root. There is even a Japanese proverb that says, “A man who likes carrots, likes women.” Garlic and onions heat one up. Interestingly, to assist in celibacy, many religious ashrams around the world forgo the stimulating properties of these plants. Nuts and seeds such as almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are considered foods of love. They are high in protein, vitamin E and zinc which are important for sexual health. Low thyroid function can contribute to poor libido. Adding seaweed such as dulse, kelp or wakame to salads and soups nourishes the thyroid and invigorates metabolism. For centuries people have sought the healing benefits of herbs to build sexual vitality. These herbs can be used in the form of tea, tincture or capsules. However, before using herbs, clear up any emotional conflicts that may be affecting sexuality and develop a healthier diet. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, C. cassia) has been used in love potions since medieval times. It warms, improves circulation and is mildly stimulating.

Damiana (Turnera aphrodisiaca, T. diffusa) is used in Central America for frigidity, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and testicular atrophy. It helps sexual problems related to anxiety and increases nerve sensitivity. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) relaxes blood vessels so nutrients can have better delivery throughout the body. By improving vascular insufficiency there is improved blood flow to the penis. Ginkgo is also considered a kidney tonic and rejuvenative. Ginseng (Panax ginseng) improves fatigue and increases stamina. It also strengthens the adrenal glands. Maca (Lepidium peruvianum Chacón, L. meyenii) is an energy enhancer, nutritive and rejuvenative that increases pituitary function thereby encouraging the body’s natural hormonal production. It also helps improve vaginal lubrication. Muira puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides, P. uncinatum) is native to South America where it is referred to as “potency wood.” It improves virility and sexual debility. It is a tonic for the central nervous system as well as an aphrodisiac.

Oatstraw (Avena sativa) is warming, nutritive and relaxing. It has long been regarded as a tonic to improve sexual ability, increase libido, aid impotence and premature ejaculation. As it nourishes the nervous system it makes tactile sensations more pleasurable for both men and women. Schizandra (Schisandra chinensis) increases staying power in men. It is a kidney tonic for both men and women improving general weakness, depression and sexual debility. It is also suggested as an herb to help heal trauma from sexual abuse. Tribulis terrestris (same Latin name, though also known as Caltrop and Horny Goat Weed) is used for erectile dysfunction and low sperm count. It is a kidney tonic, rejuvenative and aphrodisiac.

Another way to enhance sexuality is using food with more zest including vanilla, cardamom, cloves, garlic, and ginger, all of which are warming and aphrodisiac. Too often couples have only leftover time for sex such as late at night when they are exhausted or first thing in the morning when time is limited due to work and children’s schedules. Consider creating sacred time to be with your beloved when the kids are visiting elsewhere or send them to a sitter for a few hours. Make your bedroom more sensual with comfortable stimulating colors such as accents of hot pink or red and velvety fabrics. Enter your sacred space with a clean body and without time restraints. Engage in massage as foreplay to help you relax and stimulate all the meridians of energy throughout the body. Don’t rush.

Remember to breathe together. Make love more slowly. Enjoy after play by lying together to rest, nap or exchange your feelings of love. “Harmony in the bedroom contributes to world peace.” — Anonymous Brigitte Mars is an herbalist and nutritional consultant of Natural Health with almost fifty years of experience. Foods to Support Your Chakras BRIGETTE MARS The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel.” They are considered energy centers and each chakra corresponds to a color, action and part of the body. To visualize a chakra in the body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. This invisible energy, called Prana, is vital life force, which keeps us vibrant, healthy, and alive.

The first chakra red is located at the base of the spine. It corresponds to survival, elimination and action. Wake one half hour earlier because this gives more time for you. Prepare for morning the night before by packing a healthful lunch and laying out clothing and other necessities for the day. Starting off in a less rushed fashion will lead to a more serene day. Include more red foods in your diet, such as beets, pomegranates, apples, watermelon, radish, hazelnuts, and tomatoes.

The second chakra is orange corresponds to the reproductive organs, kidneys, and adrenals. It is the center for relations, partnerships and sexuality. If you are blessed to have found a partner, get healthy together, by exercising or preparing food as a team. Learn about Tantra by reading a book or taking a workshop together. Keep learning about love and relationships your entire life. Include more orange foods, such as pumpkin and other winter squashes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cinnamon, and oranges.

The third chakra is yellow and corresponds to the solar plexus, naval area, digestion and our center of material comfort.

Include more dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, arugula, watercress, and avocados.

The fifth chakra is blue and corresponds to the base of throat, thyroid and parathyroid. It is the center of the spoken word and communication. Is there something that you might like to teach others or give a class on? Pursue a hobby you love as a form of self-expression. Hand activities keep our brains alert, and hands out of the snack bowl. Drawing, playing an instrument, knitting, crochet, sewing, woodworking, origami, and beadwork can all be enriching. Include more blueberries, blue corn, and plums to support this chakra.

The sixth chakra is indigo and is located between the eyebrows, deep inside brain, in the pituitary gland, which regulates the glandular function of the entire body. This is the center of intelligence and intuition. Learn new things your entire life. Make a commitment to read a least two books on a subject of interest and/or take a class on it this year. Also, listen to motivational tapes to put your consciousness where you want it. Black sesame seeds, elderberries, currants, and raisins represent indigo foods.

There are foods and activities that you can undertake to support each chakra. Here is a brief checklist to help you get started.

Say a blessing or take few deep breaths to get calm and present before eating. Put your fork down between bites. Some people find using a smaller plate, cocktail fork or chopsticks to dine reminds them to appreciate each bite. Find other ways to reward and comfort yourself other than food. Make a list in your journal. Enjoy the sensual delights of an aromatherapy bath, foot massage, or walking in a beautiful environment be it nature or art museum. Include more yellow-rayed foods such as lemon, banana, almonds, ginger and pine nuts.

The fourth chakra is green and corresponds to the heart and lung center. It is the seat of love, forgiveness, and compassion. Show compassion for our precious home by living a greener life. Recycle more and vote with your dollars. Buy that which supports good causes and do your best to consume less. This may be the year that you stop buying things that require dry cleaning and buy some organic cotton or hemp clothes. We can’t just talk about saving whales and rainforests, we need to take action.

The “crown” chakra is violet corresponds to the pineal gland at top of head. It is the center of divine consciousness and spirituality.

Do you have a path that helps you feel connected to Divine Source? This might be the year that you visit a place of worship, pray, meditate, join a spiritual study group, create an altar or place for contemplation in your home, or read books that are spiritually uplifting. Acai fruit, grapes, and purple cabbage, are reminders of the violet ray. May this New Year be filled with truth, beauty, goodness, and health! Mind

PHOTO: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU, WAVE BREAK MEDIA

How to Achieve Mindfulness at Work KRISTEN METSCH Achieving mindfulness while at work starts with awareness. The subtle practice of intentionally spending a moment to check in with your current state of being. How are you feeling? Is there a deadline at work causing anxiety and frustration? Is there a co-worker affecting your emotional stability? How about home life? Have any personal issues crept into the workplace? Mindfulness at its simplest is the moment-to-moment awareness outside and inside yourself. It took me some time to finally put this practice as one of the highest behaviors on my priority list. At first, there was the frustration of attempting to be mindful but only finding myself playing my To-Do list on repeat or cycling through a recent event that upset me at work. There wasn’t a clear understanding of the feelings before and after successful mindfulness integration in myself. Then I figured it out — the most basic guide to understanding and successfully utilizing mindfulness is using breath. In the past, a typical day for me started by dragging myself out of bed 45 minutes before needing to arrive at work. As you can imagine, I was already feeling the anxiety and rushed emotions as I grabbed my work bag and headed straight for the car. I hadn’t eaten, let alone taken a sip of water and likely stopped breathing about halfway down the stairs. At that moment, I had no consideration for how I was feeling, my state of mind, or my well-being.

It’s no wonder when I walked through the doors at work that I was not entirely approachable. The rest of the day was usually a blur and every evening I found myself asking if I will ever be able to stop feeling so tired all the time. For most of us, this slowly turns into habit and we easily slip into

It wasn’t until I gained the awareness for what was happening in my life that I was able to start making intentional choices. what’s called Autopilot Living. In simple terms, your life is happening automatically rather than intentionally. We aren’t even giving ourselves a moment to catch our breath, and especially not a deep, refreshing breath. It wasn’t until I gained the awareness for what was happening in my life that I was able to start making intentional choices. This is really where you see yourself begin to create the life you desire. Like many, I lived by my work calendar but had little regard for

investing my time into planning my personal calendar. Why was that? I started to understand that it is just as important to create personal deadlines as it is to create professional deadlines. I began to set time aside to catch up or get ahead with the various To-Do list items in my personal life. This sparked so much awareness surrounding the personal tasks I’d left pending for eternity. Awareness started to evolve into the best gift I could have given myself. It has opened the door to the gift of mindfulness, time management, and goal setting. After having achieved the awareness, the next part in the process is to integrate mindful practices into our busy lives. I do this by setting time aside each weekend to self-reflect, prepare, and organize what I want for the upcoming week. This creates my foundation. With a solid foundation in place, I am able to choose to intentionally create moments in my day where I take 5 minutes to tune in and check in. This creates the practice. Here are some tips to help incorporate mindfulness as a practice in your day:

29

1. Set the foundation for your week by preparing over the weekend (food, calendar, goals, etc.) 2. Before leaving the house, reconnect to your organization’s purpose and understand the value you bring by being present & aware 3. Set time aside during throughout the day to practice your breath and check in 4. End your day by preparing for tomorrow. This ensures work stays at work A typical day has shifted now to waking up an hour before I need to arrive at work with my breakfast and lunch already prepared in my fridge. I am able to leave for work with ease and peace knowing that I have already prepared for the week. I find myself not tired at the end of my days since I am able to be present

and aware, moment by moment, throughout the day. The benefits I have experienced using mindfulness practices are reduced stress, improved memory, and less anxiety. The beauty of mindfulness is truly the ability to increase your coping mechanisms of moment-by-moment events that occur throughout the day at work. We are living in a time where being pulled in multiple directions and multitasking is the norm. Without a proper foundation and proper coping skills, this is usually a good recipe for quick burnout and employee turnover. A great reference is the book Contemplative Practices in Action: Spirituality, Meditation and Health, written by Thomas G. Plante, PhD. In it, he outlines how mindfulness practices are being used to cope with vast modern stresses. It is clear to see how incorporating

mindfulness in the workplace can be an integral part of a company culture. Forbes describes General Mills observing “that among senior executives, 80 percent reported a positive change in their ability to make better decisions, while 89 percent said they became better listeners”. (http://www.forbes.com/sites/ drewhansen/2012/10/31/a-guide-tomindfulness-at-work/#500e473b6870) I hope you find this practice helpful and aids in your success! BOOK EXCERPT

The Stress Solution:

Using Empathy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Reduce Anxiety and Develop Resilience ARTHUR P. CIARAMICOLI, ED.D.,PH.D. Published by New World Library, 2016 The amount of stress in America and throughout the world is rapidly rising. We work too much, sleep too little, love with half a heart, and wonder why we are unhappy and unhealthy.

Half of Americans indicate they lie awake at night due to stress, while three quarters experience stress symptoms — either physical, psychological, or both. The Harris Interactive Survey conducted in 2012 indicates high stress levels among Americans, with 53% saying they have little or no support for stress management from their health care provider. Roughly, 70% of Americans hate their jobs and feel disengaged, according to a 2013 Gallup poll, and two thirds of office visits to primary care doctors are stress-related. According to the World Health Organization, Americans die sooner and have higher rates of disease than 16 other affluent countries. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin conducted studies that indicate that stress increases the risk of dying by 43%, but only for those who believed that stress was harmful. Stress in and of itself is not the issue; it is how we react and perceive stress and its potential consequences. We know that personal and professional success does not come without sacrifice and stress, but it should not ruin our health and leave our relationships devoid of love and intimacy. Empathic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (“CBT”) will help listeners take steps to free themselves from the stress caused by the obsession to excel; it will allow participants to begin the process of finding meaning in their work, and in their relationships. We need to go beyond material reward to being able to establish genuine, healthy accomplishments throughout all aspects of life. Many people throughout the world are discovering that

what they thought would bring them happiness has encapsulated them in an emotional, stress-filled prison, but there is still a path forward.

How do we change? Introducing the concept of Empathic CBT The new combination of the power of empathy, brain science and cognitive behavioral therapy will provide participants with a comprehensive self-help tool to lessen stress and balance. Empathy calms the emotional brain so we can perceive accurately and thoughtfully. Being able to perceive accurately is crucial to reducing stress, as old biased thinking, based on early conditioning, distorts reality and causes unnecessary tension. Knowledge regarding neurochemistry allows us to produce our own natural chemicals that create calm, focused energy to do and be the best we can be. Finally, CBT corrects distorted thinking. These three components produce a synergy that enhances our lives, reduces the stress in our lives and releases our potential. Empathy, brain science and CBT combine in one practical formula to reduce the inordinate amount of stress in our society and in our world. I have been practicing with these three elements for more than 35 years. I believe this unique formula will allow participants to lessen the stress in their marriage, family and work-life if participants are committed to doing the necessary work. Empathy is the capacity to understand and respond to the unique experiences of another, and it motivates us to STRESS cont. on page 32 www.RegenerateMagazine.com • January/February 2017 • Regenerate

STRESS cont. from page 31 acts of compassion and altruism. It is essentially everyday mind analysis. Empathy is part of our genetic endowment; it is not an emotion or a feeling but a capacity that is innately present. Sympathy unlike empathy occurs when we identify with another person’s experience even when we don’t actually know if our experiences are similar. You hear of a neighbor’s father passing away and you immediately respond, ‘she must be devastated, I was when my father died’. Then a few days later you hear that your neighbor’s father left the family when she was a baby and seldom had any contact with his daughter. In fact, and I emphasize fact, she was not devastated at all. Sympathy rushes in, empathy takes time to understand the facts. It is objective, not assuming but focused on discerning the truth. Despite its many benefits, empathy is frequently misunderstood, as it is often confused with sympathy. Empathy is centered on the uniqueness of the other person’s experience; it is a thoughtful response rather than a quick general reaction. “I know what you’re going through” is a familiar comment people express as soon as they identify with a situation. Empathy slows down emotion to a manageable degree so that thought and cognition can perceive accurately. Sympathy, on the other hand, is often driven by immediate emotion without considering the facts of a situation, which can cause more harm than good as generalizations are the last thing people want to hear when they long to be understood We are born with this capacity, and if not developed, it will atrophy like an unused muscle. I know from leading group sessions for more than 25 years that human beings can be taught how to expand their empathic range in ways that will reap profound benefits. We also know that stress, both acute and chronic, impairs empathic accuracy, as worry about stressors draws a person’s cognitive effort away from deciphering behavioral cues in everyday interactions. Interestingly, the British Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapies has published articles indicating “there has been remarkably little discussion or research on empathy in the CBT literature although it has been shown to play an important role in therapeutic outcomes for CBT.” CBT psychologists Richard Thwaites and James Bennett-Levy have developed an Empathy Model specific to CBT as they also indicate that empathy has proven to

significantly contribute to positive CBT outcomes, yet has seldom been discussed in the CBT literature. A number of reports recently indicate that CBT therapists place a high value on empathy as a tool to help individuals perceive with accuracy and without remnants projected from the past. The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy now offers empathy training for individuals who “want to improve their ability to emotionally attune themselves to others, to read people more accurately, and to gain a greater understanding of first their own and/or others deepest needs, wants, and desires.” We know that empathy is the brain’s salve for limiting aggression; it has an inhibitory effect on escalation and produces successful negotiation rather than needless confrontation. Research has confirmed that empathy training creates trust and causes a neurochemical change that produces a sense of security to allow for a deeper understanding of one another. This is especially valuable in the business world, for instance, where team settings abound and workplace culture is of great importance. We know that so called “empathy organizations” like IBM and Harley Davidson grasp opportunities quicker, react to change with less anxiety, and offer their employees a sense of purpose in their work that fuels a positive work environment. At the end of each chapter, there are also cognitive behavioral worksheets. These assignments give the reader the benefit of reducing stress without ever stepping into a psychologist’s office. Readers are asked to record weekly homework by filling in answers in the following categories: Identification of Stress Triggers, Activity Chart, Dysfunctional Thought Record, and Core Beliefs Discovered. Readers are also asked to identify which cognitive distortion they relate to in each chapter. For instance, did you personalize, use mindreading, make negative predictions, or use “all or nothing” thinking? Readers are asked to answer certain questions that will track five core areas of a person’s lifestyle — exercise, nutrition, sleep, relationships and work. In addition, you will be asked to do behavioral experiments by taking positive actions based on the insights of each chapter. A peaceful state of mind is not only resolved through changing negative thinking, but must be accompanied by positive actions. New research indicates that optimism and resilience have more to do with actions rather than just what we think.

Empathy is centered on the uniqueness of the other person’s experience; it is a thoughtful response rather than a quick general reaction.

So You Think You Can’t Dance… Oh Yes You Can HEATHER MUNO SIEBENALER

Let’s face it; most of us don’t think we can dance. Why? Remember the movie Dirty Dancing? I know every woman who watched that movie wished she could dance like Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and every man like Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

Do you have memories of being at a school dance on the dance floor, nearly in the middle of a full-blown panic attack? Were you imagining everybody laughing at you? How many of us were told at some point in our lives that we couldn’t dance? How many of us listened? How many of us still don’t dance for fear that this could possibly be true and that people will ridicule or laugh at us? This also could be a euphemism for other things that we are fearful of in our lives, not just dancing. All of us have moments in our lives that we reflect upon. Some of these moments get lodged into our subconscious minds as programs that repeatedly tell us we are less than acceptable, that we can’t do something, that we aren’t good enough. With each and every New Year, we are blessed with a New Beginning, an opportunity for a New Start, a time for CHANGE. Together, let’s change our internal dialogue and refuse to accept the “I AM NOT’S” and convert to the “I AM’S”. Let’s choose only to think positively. We all have that internal dialogue, the chatter in our subconscious mind that chooses to point out our supposed faults and traits. When I begin to hear this chatter, I choose a “safe word.” For me, this safe word helps me to divert my thinking away from the negative and to reframe it in a positive light. What is a safe word and how do you use it? For example, I had someone say to me the other day “Everyone I know wants to write a book. What makes you think that you are so special that you could get one published?” I could have

construed this statement as negative within my mind. I could have chosen to listen to her, to believe her, to think I wasn’t special or talented enough. I could also choose to walk away or to change the words I was hearing so that when they entered my mind I turned them into positive thoughts. My safe word is “STOP”; yes, simply the word STOP. Although, when I speak this word to myself, I say it ever so gently and only in a loving way. You can choose any word you would like, anything that would resonate directly with you to allow you to convert your thinking. This word is very helpful when you begin to think negatively about yourself or others. Once I speak the safe word to

I will write in my journal, repeating a positive affirmation for up to 3 pages. I do this for at least seven days. Do what feels best for you. I write whatever it is I want my subconscious to believe and ultimately for the universe to hear. You have to believe it is true and feel its truth while you are writing. For example: “I am an accomplished, published author and words flow to me effortlessly. Others are drawn to my work” Or, “I gracefully and effortlessly flow across the dance floor with elegance and ease. My dancing partner smiles as he is proud to guide me.” You can apply this practice to anything you want to change in your life. With this New Year, anything is possible! This is a new

With each and every New Year, we are blessed with a New Beginning, an opportunity for a New Start, a time for CHANGE. myself, I then allow my heart center to open and feel love flowing freely through this center. I believe and receive positive internal messages and ignore those that are negative. This also works when you are thinking from a state of anxiety, doubt or fear. Pay close attention to your breath while you are listening to your safe word, and feel the love emanating through your heart center. I also find that journaling helps. Red ink is my weapon of choice as I have found this to be successful when I am manifesting.

Walk Gently RENE VILLARD-REID Discussing the interconnectedness of all life is one thing, but to truly experience and know it, is another. In his teachings, “knowing it” meant to interface and truly be a part of nature and existence… to live it, breath it, touch it, hear it and be taught by it. Talking was one thing… walking another.

These lessons have lived in me many years. So, whenever I am in nature, as I am today, it is within these living teachings I walk. Today I have at long last returned to a place which I’ve held in my heart since I left California 15 years ago… the Sequoia National Forest. Please join me and allow yourself to become immersed in an experience of interconnectedness and when the day is over, make these teachings your own. He always said to share everything and pass the gifts along, so, today I pass this blessing to you. He’d taught me to pause in reverence and respect at any of nature’s thresholds… to humbly ask, with all my heart, to enter. Iit is with this knowledge I stop and await invitation from the gatekeepers of the forest before setting my foot on the trailhead. With closed eyes, I take a deep breath sending my energy down through my feet… down through the powdery dirt and ground pine needles. A faint vibration answers, traveling like a delicate silver chain up my legs and into my body. I wait. Soon, a wisp of crisp autumn breeze

caresses my face and disappears. There is no other movement. None is needed. In the language of spirit, I have been granted gracious entry. Nodding my head in thanks and honoring, I take my first step… and pause. Listening with my inner ear, I am not disappointed. You see, there is music below the surface of the world’s sounds, just beyond the reach of the five senses. It is

woodpecker tattoo, which honors ancient rites of passage marking your wisdom and elder status. Do you remember me? Beautiful sentinel, I have no tobacco to bless you with today, but take a few strands of my hair in offering. Accept my touch and the beat of my heart. I am grateful for your presence on the earth. Take a little bit of me and know my love for you. Though many years have passed since we last met, I would know your face anywhere. Please accept my gift. For a brief moment, I am one with tree, its life blood mingling with my own… its breath fragrant within me. I surrender into the moment and am lost within the sweetness of our connection. For awhile, we are as one. There is a change in the air, or was it the rustle of leaves saying it’s time to move along? Thank you, beautiful one. My heart is full. I turn and travel up the trail allowing my heart to set the pace. The elevation, slight exertion and just being older moderates my speed. It keeps me aware of another heartbeat. A deep unheard frequency. The heartbeat

It is a music deep and rich as the earth. It is the music of the other world. Can you hear it? different than the breeze soughing through the needles of a pine branch. It is different than the rush of water over granite. It is different than the chitter of a chipmunk or squirrel. It is a music deep and rich as the earth. It is the music of the other world. Can you hear it? The trees play etheric cellos… branches drawn across invisible strings... with tones deep and resonant. I take another step and place my palm against the rough flesh of a Ponderosa. I know you. I remember you and your

of the mother whose breast I walk upon. Her subtle rhythm echoes his teachings. Walk easy. Walk softly. If you listen with all your being, it will speak to you. There… right there! Did you hear it? Can you feel it? It pulses and thrums beneath my feet. Solid, firm, comforting. I crouch down and place the palm of my hand on the earthen floor. She’s there. She’s always been there. I whisper. Do you remember me, Mother? Do you remember a young woman who once ran up the trail following the curve of your body… flying as if she had wings? Do you remember her? I remember you. Hello Mother. Blessings, dear Mother. I am home. A tear falls and beads on the path. Please accept my small gift. Know my love for you. My heart is ever yours. Reverently, I withdraw my hand and touch the dirt to my face. I mark my cheeks with her dusty kiss. I am your child. Slowly rising, I step back onto the trail. It winds, gradually keeping the river in sight. One step in front of another, knees slightly flexed, I keep a thoughtful tempo. Around a bend, steam rises from a downed tree… the sun’s warmth drying it from the night’s rain. I pause. Moving gently to its side, I pass my hand through the mystical vapor. My gaze travels upward. The sun glints in my eyes and I raise my arms in blessing. The prayer comes effortlessly to my lips as it has so many times in years gone by. Hou Wakan Tanka, Tunkashila… Greetings Great Spirit, Grandfather. I come to you with all my senses… all my being. I have come to gather and make good medicine. Hear me, help me. Do you remember me? He’d

called me Sun Woman. Do you remember? For a moment, my skin grows warmer as the sun appears to brighten. Facing the golden orb, I lift my voice and sing… Wakan Tanka wase na ya… . He’d taught me to offer song when my hands were empty… offer song as a gift to Spirit. So I sing in praise and love, my voice echoing down the canyon. Accept my gift. Accept my heart. The forest ceased all movement. It too listened. There was no breeze. No sound of birds or smaller denizens. All held its breath as the chant and music was raised to Father Sky. He’d said that when an offering is good, all of nature agrees and responds to it. My countenance a golden shield, I was blessed in the sun’s brilliance as the last strains lingered and faded. Its intensity eased and all became as it was before. Rustlings in the underbrush, the scratching of tiny claws on bark and the harsh shriek and clicks of a blue jay announced the movement of time. He had said, when nature pauses, you pause. When nature moves, you move. Nodding my head in thanks, I return to the trail and its gentle ascent. Rounding a slight turn, familiar granite slabs flowed like thick liquid, unbroken by time. They are polished and smoothed by eons of wind and water. Like a mother’s arms cradled to hold a child, they have molded themselves around the river. Gliding across its floor, the waters spill gently over a curved lip of stone shaped by its own rapid passage. I make my way down and plant my feet on its solid body. Whorled out by years of

swirling waters, I find my shaman hole. The river has receded and left this entrance to the lower world available and open. I approach in deference. Do you remember me? I remember you. You have taught me before. Will you teach me today? May I travel your descending highway and journey within your depths as ancient shamans and medicine people have before me? I lay beside the carved out pool. The water magnifies within its depths tiny granules of broken and tumbled rock which rest at the bottom. They appear close to the surface, yet I know better. My belly against the cool stone, I reach in, water to my elbow and extract a small handful of pea-sized grains. Rolling into a sitting position, my eyes close and I turn within. I brush past the rushing and gurgling sounds of the river reaching for the music beyond the surface of sound. There… can you hear it? Like a magnificent pipe organ, sonorous dark tones ebb and flow pulling me into the depths of a spiraling vortex. The hole coils away like a great earthen worm tunnel. Down, down, down until at last I am poured out into a dimly lit subterranean cave. I have come to a place of great rushing waters. Rivers run deep in the mother like gigantic thundering arteries of life. Deep in the darkness, within her womb, life is lush and verdant. I am here. I am your servant. Please teach me. She says, “On the surface, my skin is barren and drought ridden. Thousands of dead trees blanket my hills and mountains. Don’t believe what you see. My heart is still beating. Life is still beating. The waters are still flowing and

will ever flow. Believe with your heart, not your eyes. I am strong. It has always been so.” Humbled, I vibrate with her words and truth. Thank you Great Mother. My heart calls me like the beat of a drum. I rise upward into the light and the rushing of the river moves me into present time. My eyes open to a crystalline world sharp and bright. Shimmering auras play at the edges of all I behold, reminding me there is the space in between all things where no solidness resides. We are nothing more than space and energy. You, me, the trees, the rocks, a table a chair… intangible space. All about me floats in etheric waves of truth and beauty. In this moment, I am separate from nothing and part of everything.

Tears stream down my face in gratefulness and I share them with the rock and the river. We comingle ourselves and are as one. Take my tears. Take my heart. I love you. I love you. Thank you. Reluctantly, I take my leave and clamber out of the canyon. Soon I am returned to the trail and retrace my steps. The music accompanies me as I reach out and touch a branch here and a rock there. I am not alone as I reach the end of the trail. Before leaving, I turn back. Standing strong in spirit, arms raised, I grasp the etheric curtains and drop them down, sealing the way into the other world. Always close the door. Protect the old ones and their energies. His voice echoes in my

mind as I thank the guardians and return to the world. This is an excerpt from my book Sun Woman, Moon Chief and has been rewritten for this article. Rewilding Our Hearts and Souls:

Simple Ways to Reconnect with Nature and Ourselves MARC BEKOFF In today’s hustle-and-bustle world, it’s easy to get trapped in the busy-ness of it all: emails, texts, all sorts of social media, and countless sticky notes of various colors. We can forget to take time out to enjoy and reconnect with nature. I’ve been thinking a long time about how each and every individual can personally “rewild” and experience a deep and long-lasting spiritual transformation to counter the alienation from Mother Nature that ultimately results in our alienating ourselves from our true nature. Humans are inherently “biophiliacs.” We are innately drawn to nature to feel whole and good about ourselves. These feelings influence how we treat other individuals of all species. Simply put, what’s called “the biophilia hypothesis,” proposes that there is “an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biophilia_hypothesis. Thus, it’s natural to be drawn to nature because it’s in our genes. Lifestyles that pull us away from nature cause us to feel alone and separate from the vital forces that make us human. In conservation biology, the term “rewilding” — to make wild once again — refers to building corridors that connect different landscapes so that animals have free access to their habitat despite human interferences such as highways. Conservation biologists see rewilding as a large-scale process involving projects of different sizes, such as the ambitious, courageous, and forward-looking Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, known as the Y2Y project. As a field biologist with strong interests in animal behavior and conservation, and as a human being who must be outside as much as possible, I have tried to figure out how to make “rewilding” more personal. I co-opted the term “rewilding” to refer to ways in which humans of all ages can reconnect and become re-enchanted with nature. Here are some tips about what rewilding is and how to do it: • Rewilding means we not only see and sense other nature, but we work hard to identify with our observations. When I watch coyotes, I become coyote; when I watch crows I become crow. By doing this, our perspectives on animals and their homes change in profound ways. • Rewilding means living from the inside out, allowing our feelings of joy and connection to encourage us to act on behalf of nature. • Rewilding is about nurturing our sense of wonder and

40 Regenerate • January/February 2017 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

curiosity about the world around us, of which we are an integral part. • Rewilding is about being kind, compassionate and empathetic in order to harness our inborn goodness and optimism. It means thinking of others and allowing their needs and perspectives to influence our own. The personal transformation involved in rewilding helps people reconnect with themselves, to slow down, and to pay attention to the fascinating animals with whom we share our magnificent planet. Rewilding is possible. It’s a personal journey. It’s contagious. I like to think of “rewilding” as a meme, an idea that can easily spread around the world. Rewilding is an attitude. It’s also a guide for action. We need to be proactive, positive, persistent, patient, peaceful, practical, powerful, passionate, playful, and present, the ten Ps of rewilding. We owe this change to ourselves and to future generations who will inherit the world we leave them long after we’re gone. It’s essential to get youngsters to begin rewilding as soon as possible, to get them away from computers and other devices that unwild them, and provide opportunities for them to spend as much time as they can outdoors. You can watch a video interview about rewilding our hearts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8M3OCGSxxc. A excellent book about the joys of connecting with nature is Dr. Eva Selhub’s Your brain on nature: The science of nature’s influence on your health, happiness and vitality. Release the Old, Embrace the New JENNAE GEREN

Three Different Energetic Practices to Assist You “People are desperately trying to wake up,” states clairvoyant and certified energetic practitioner, Shelley Rene. This year the pull to release what doesn’t resonate with us anymore and embrace a more authentic life is stronger than ever. According to astrologists, 2017 is all about new beginnings, since a karmic nineyear cycle ended in 2016 and we have now entered a new nine-year cycle. “People are understanding what truth is for them and no longer want to live life defined by society,” said Rene. Once the desire is there to wake up, your life is rattled and whatever needs to be cleared is punctuated. Your awakening can rush through as inexorable waves of disconnection, manifest as a medical condition or a change in a relationship; new beginnings disguised as dooming finalities. Fortunately, there's help from three reputable and natural-born clairvoyants: a Shaman, Psychic, and Energetic Practitioner. From each, you will learn different approaches to healing through clearing negative energy and channeling divine guidance for your new year ahead.

The Uncommon Shaman: Melissa Chatwell What she’s known for: • Clearing negative energy or entities attached to properties or people • Connecting people with those who have crossed Seventeen years ago Melissa Chatwell’s life screeched to a halt after a car struck her, leaving her bed-ridden and wheelchair-bound for

months. For the first time, Chatwell was still. That was when she saw her guide. “Do you know what you are?” a voice beside her asked. Melissa looked up to see the solid figure of a primitive man. His long, dark hair silhouetted his dark features and penetrating brown eyes. “No,” Melissa said. “You are a Shaman. It’s something that’s been a part of you for your entire life and lineage. You have a choice. If you accept your role as a Shaman, life will change.” Tired of living on the cusp of fear, Chatwell accepted. An intensive 18month period followed in which Chatwell was instructed by her guide not to read any outside material but only to listen to his teachings. “After 18 months, he told me, ‘Now go read’ and I found everything I’d just been taught,” said Melissa. A Shaman is as an intermediate between the physical world and the world of spirits. And it wasn’t until Chatwell became a Shaman that she exercised control over her environment. Her life until then was a play of scenes from a horror movie. Even at two years old, she recalls the dead slinking through her room at night. Today she uses her Shamanic abilities to clear homes of entities. But lately a surge of people are coming to her not only with an entity to be cleared from their home, but also from their body. “A nonliving being or entity which has attached to a living person is a real thing. It’s not only real, it’s very common,” said Chatwell. “These entities can cause everything from feelings of exhaustion to heart problems and

even death. When Western medicine has been exhausted in helping a client’s issues, when all other realistic and normal causes have been explored and ruled out, this is an important area to consider.” How she works: Chatwell’s team of guides each hold a unique specialty and immediately send her visual and auditory messages for her clients. “They let me know whether the client is in immediate physical danger, either from physical illness or spiritually from an attached entity. They recommend sending the client to a medical doctor for diagnosis or psychotherapy, or exorcism types of treatments for attached entities, and everything in between.” Chatwell isn’t reliant on physical location because spirits aren’t dependent on time and space and treatment is just as effective whether clients are physically present or on the other side of the world.

The Psychic: Gaynol Wapotich What She’s Known For: • Psychic readings with direct guidance • Hypnotherapy to release trauma One year ago I reclined in Gaynol Wapotich’s oversized suede chair for a hypnotherapy session, my eyes concealed with a snug eyemask. The room was black but the pictures reeling through my mind’s eye were clear. It suddenly wasn’t 2016 anymore but 10 years in the future. I stepped off a boat from San Francisco Bay into my new life. As I moved through the city and my home, Wapotich’s voice gently guided me to decipher the symbolic images.

“Your subconscious mind knows where to take you,” Wapotich said when I asked her why I was in the future rather than the past. One year later these moving images imbedded in my subconscious have shifted my life so dramatically, no area of my life has been left unrippled. Wapotich is a spiritual guide and conduit to answer your life’s deepest questions through hypnotherapy or a reading.

• Combining energy work on the body with channeled spiritual insight Shelley Rene suffered an isolating childhood, causing her to shut down her clairvoyant abilities because “people did not have the ability to hear truth.” Today she acts as a faucet of truth on full blast. At the end of energy sessions with Rene, I’ve absorbed so much channeled information that it often

Clearing yourself of negative energies leaves you “proactive instead of reactive,” said Gaynol Wapotich. Since Wapotich cleared her own emotional baggage, “creative channels open synchronicities and opportunities appear and life flows more easily.” The healing modality is not what matters; it’s your desire for truth and expansion. “We come to earth to have emotional experiences for our soul’s evolution,” said Wapotich. And we can only evolve if we wake up. She’s is renowned for her direct clairaudient readings, which appeals to those who don’t want to wait around to decode symbolism on their own. The answers are so concise and resonant, often confirming dormant feelings, that you emerge feeling liberated with clear direction.

Rene sees the body as an ecology of latched-on emotions. “Our body holds every single awareness we’ve ever had along with past-life experiences. Anytime that unhealed trauma or any kind of negative belief about ourselves has been absorbed, it creates a blockage,” said Rene. “This can create physical ailments. The denser the vibration, the more physical ailments manifest within the body.” When Rene conducts energy work either on mental or organ systems, she raises the vibration so blockages are released and people have a congruent energy flow. How She Works: Sessions are so individualized that Rene doesn’t stick to one healing modality, and she’s unattached to the identity of the different energies clients bring with them since they continuously shift. Rene also doesn’t relay inevitable outcomes to a client’s questions. Her modern approach is that clients can attach to answers, creating limitations and self-fulfilling prophecies. When channeling, she sees different possibilities and outcomes and offers tools and awareness to help them through their situation.

Medical Intuitive Solutions I am a Medical Intuitive, Medium and Healer FRANCESCA FLEMING What does this mean? Every person has an aura, as well as many chakras and cords that compose his/her energy field. Each energy field is unique and contains a vast amount of information. Some people are able to see the energy fields around a person, and understand their meaning. I am one of those people. How do I see energy? The answer is twofold. Firstly, I was born with a very high degree of empathy. I not only understand your emotional condition; I feel it in my body as well. This allows me to quickly and fully experience your present emotional state and offer compassion and healing. As an empath, I have a natural ability to understand and relate to people, which greatly assists me in my work. The second aspect of my work involves Divine Information. I started receiving Divine Information as a child. During a session, as I ‘scan’ your energy, I quietly channel Divine Information about your body, emotions and spirit. I am told about the weaknesses, misalignments, and imbalances affecting you (I call this the “issues in your tissues”) and I receive specific healing strategies and remedies, tailored to you. Oftentimes, proper nutrients and supplements, in correct doses, can heal even chronic conditions. Sometimes, pharmaceutical drugs or surgery is required. The healing process I am not a substitute for a medical doctor. I believe anything can be healed, and I offer my services as a complement to other medical help you may be seeking for your health conditions. I work with my clients over the phone and in person as I am able to read your energy effectively either way. Although I am physically located in Oregon, I can work with clients in Colorado. Each person is a totally unique energy, on a unique journey, with a unique purpose. In a session, I can see your original body birth template — i.e. who you really are — and compare it to your present state. This helps me understand your goals and purpose as a soul, and see where you may be off track. I have been expertly trained to help you, and also not to interfere in your journey or process. Some “ailments” serve an important purpose in your growth, and take time to resolve. I remind my clients to trust in divine timing and understand the divine

purpose of challenge or struggle in life. Everything can, and will, be healed in time. My training In addition to my Divine blessed skills and abilities, I have been mentored by several well-known healers, including Caroline Myss, Barbara Brennan, Donna Eden, Dr. Frank Alper, Dr. Eric Pearl, Shaman Brent Secunda, and several traditional Lakota and Hawaiian shamans. I am a trained traditional Usui Reiki Master. To date, I served 70,000+ clients worldwide. Tarot and Astrology for January and February JOY VERNON January: Looking Toward the Ideal New Year’s Day brings an abstract, slightly disengaged Moon in Aquarius. The Moon is known for being emotional and intuitive, but when in analytical, idealistic Aquarius, she becomes

detached, almost dissociative. Although weak when expressing personal desires, this lunar placement is highly effective for far-seeing overviews that benefit from that remote, emotionless, judgment — and right now these qualities are offered a helping hand from Jupiter in harmonious Libra. The tarot card is the Seven of Swords, which shows a figure tiptoeing away from a war camp, precariously balancing five swords while two are planted securely behind him. The card is titled the Lord of Unstable Effort and signifies stealing or deception. The effort is unstable when directed toward selfish goals, but impartiality breeds success when the whole community is taken into consideration. Since Mercury has been retrograde since December 19, and continues so through the first week of the year, the first day of January nicely reflects its namesake, Janus, who looks both back with Mercury and forward toward the Aquarian ideal. The day ends with a Moon-Venus conjunction reminding us to follow principles that inspire our heart. On January 3, Venus enters Pisces, the sign of its exaltation. Finally released from the Aquarian abstraction, Venus is free to love fully and unconditionally, empathically meshing with all around her. On January 6, fair-minded Jupiter in Libra and rebellious Uranus in Aries will challenge the Sun and Pluto in corporate Capricorn. This is the time for action and productivity. Mercury goes direct on January 8, releasing its stranglehold in the areas of communication, travel, and commerce. The Full Moon in Cancer on January 12 re-invigorates the productive Sun-

Pluto conjunction. For a day, the four cardinal signs are motivated to start things that will be enduring. Luna is not only in her home sign of Cancer, but also in the ten-degree section she rules, symbolized by the tarot’s Four of Cups, which illustrated here asks us what emotional stability we need to expand our territory and grow to the next level. This same day sees Venus conjoining Neptune in Pisces, a deeply intuitive meditation on love and connection. Happy birthday, Aquarius! The Sun enters innovative Aquarius on January 19. The tarot card for this sign of optimistic humanitarianism is the Star, representing navigating towards goals, receiving the flow of the Universe, and developing the soul. The English Magic Tarot Star card, inspired by the Thoth Tarot lineage, shows a magician harnessing and directing the energy of the stars toward his willed purpose. This same day sees Saturn putting the brakes on Mars. Mars gets his aggression from being hot and dry, and the watery sign of the Fishes cools him off so he can put his energy to productive use. The tarot card is the Ten of Cups, a family celebrating under a rainbow. Mars’s spring-time urge towards germination is being challenged by Saturn in Sagittarius, the tarot’s Ten of Wands, a man hunched over the heavy task of carrying an armload of wood. Saturn, the zodiac’s taskmaster, wants to drill down to find and complete progressively more detailed tasks before giving the green light, much to the frustration of antsy Mars. Mars moves into Aries, his home sign, on January 27. The tarot card is the Two of Wands, representing independence in partnership. On January 27, strict Saturn can

point out practical problems that dampen the dreamy Venusian romance. Venus is received by Jupiter who is sojourning in even-handed Libra, and who also rules Sagittarius, Saturn’s current sign, so the fair and balanced compromise wins out. The New Moon in Aquarius starts things that reach fulfillment at the Full Moon in Leo. The Aquarius/Leo polarity revisits the energy from January 1, the emotionally objective universality of Aquarius, now looking forward to integrating the confident recognition of the individual in Leo.

February: Blowing Reveille On February 3, Venus leaves her beloved Pisces for Aries, whose competitive nature brings out an aggressive edge. Venus in Aries is fearless in striving toward her goal, but might bulldoze over the unsuspecting to get there. Venus goes retrograde in early March for about six weeks, and, having moved back into Pisces, comes to a stop precisely connected to Chiron, the wounded healer, perhaps giving her a chance to correct any wrongs she’s committed before she again moves forward. The largest planet, Jupiter, begins a retrograde cycle on February 5 in the tropical sign of Libra, not moving forward until June. Jupiter has a twelveyear cycle, and the last time it was retrograde in Libra was February through June 2005 (also, January-June 1993, and January-May 1981). Reviewing your journal for those periods shows patterns that might be repeated now. Mercury enters Aquarius February 7. It’s moving quickly now and will only be in that sign for two and half weeks. You might find deep talks are less confessional and more theoretical. Aquarius encourages Mercury to hit those heady philosophical heights. The Full Moon in Leo falls on February 10. Leo shines a spotlight on our accomplishments, so if your New Moon ideas seemed too out there to share, now you will find conviction to put them on display. This is also a Lunar Eclipse, the first of a series that will occur in Leo and Aquarius, asking us to

explore ideas of self vs. community over the next two years. Valentine’s Day pits a Libra Moon, balanced partnership, against Venus and then Mars in independent Aries. If you’re in a relationship, one or the other of you might ask how to fit personal goals into your collaboration. If you’re not in a relationship, there will be no time for Joni Mitchell or streaming Netflix — you’re too busy planning your next exciting solo adventure. Happy birthday, Pisces! The Sun moves into the sign of the Fishes on February 18. Leaving intellectual Aquarius, we now enter a time of deep, boundless emotion. The tarot card is The Moon, representing intuition, mysticism, mystery, and evolution. On February 22, Mars, the planet of aggression and ambition, at home in the liberated sign of the Ram, butts heads with power hungry Pluto, whose true nature is veiled by a tight connection with the mysterious Moon. Over the next few days Mars will activate the tsquare between Pluto, Uranus, and Jupiter discussed in January, bringing his assertive nature to this go-getting cardinal configuration. In this case, bold individualism and naked ambition have a behind-the-curtain puppet master pulling their strings. Be aware of who might be secretly influencing you — or who you might be manipulating. Loquacious Mercury enters silent Pisces on February 25, giving the planet of graceful speech two and a half weeks of quiet introspection. Use the time to sink deeply into poetry, dream work, nostalgia, and intuition. The February 26 New Moon Solar Eclipse resolves the Pisces-Virgo installment of eclipses, which saw fact facing off against fiction. Most people will choose the blue pill because this New Moon conjunct Neptune, the sleepy blue giant, concludes that ignorance is bliss. The red planet Mars, conjoined to Uranus the rebel, blows reveille, inciting the charge against the plutocrats. Do you heed Mars’s call or let Neptune hit snooze? This could make for an outrageous celebration on Fat Tuesday! Moon conjunct Venus in Aries lowers

And the Sun and Neptune, only a degree apart in Pisces, create a blurry haze on this feast day. This combination can crank up the usual wild atmosphere typical of a modern Mardi Gras bacchanal. Even for stay-at-home types, the crescent Moon in adventurous Aries might lure you into the night. If this revelry isn’t your thing, consider directing the energy towards something new and exciting or a personal passion. Fast Fashion PHYLLIS K. KENNEMER Is clothing an enduring investment or is it a temporary treasure? Answers differ depending on age, occupation, social status and personal values. Trends in clothing have changed significantly over the years. Nowadays, few people wear custom-made clothes designed by local tailors and seamstresses. The production and distribution of clothing has transitioned over the years from handmade pieces to mass-produced, ready-to-wear styles. For many years, only the rich could afford to stay current with seasonal designs appearing on fashion show catwalks in New York, Paris and Milan. The concept of fast fashion began to emerge in the 1980s. Fast fashion is a term used by retailers to describe clothing based on catwalk designs which are made of cheaper fabrics and mass produced to bring the most recent fashion trends to the general public. The supply chain for these trends is structured to design clothing quickly and inexpensively to enable working women to buy current styles at low prices. The idea of moving merchandise quickly from the designer’s table to the retail sales floor has influenced the global retail industry. Zara, a company located in Spain, has been at the forefront of making and marketing fast fashion clothing. It continues to be a leader in the field, although companies in the United States and other countries are beginning to be competitive. The concept of quick response has transformed the manufacturing processes in the textile industry. Product lead times have been cut in half due to manufacturing efficiencies. The quick response time is used to support fast fashion through creating fresh new products. This has greatly reduced the time between design and production and enabled companies to change their stock more frequently. As a result, the number of fashion seasons has increased. Instead of the basic four seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter), a fashion season has been reduced to a four to six-week period. This more than doubles the number of seasons in a year and entices women to shop for new clothes twice as often. Fast fashion has become associated with disposable fashion. It is delivered to the markets at relatively low prices; it is generally worn “for the moment”; and it is quickly discarded. Then the problems begin. What can be done with these increasing mounds of unwanted used clothing?

Alden Wicker explores this question in his article, “Fast Fashion Is Creating an Environmental Crisis,” published in the September 1, 2016, issue of Newsweek. He explains that the usual methods of disposing of used clothing are disappearing. Many second-hand stores reject clothing that is of poor quality. Some charitable organizations, such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army, are being forced to do more sorting of their donations. In many places, the number of sellable garments has dropped to less than 50 percent of the amount they receive. Clothing that is not sold is placed in large bundles and sold by the pound to textile recyclers. Some of the bales go to foreign countries where the clothing continues to be used, but cheap garments made of inferior fabrics are not generally acceptable. While some fabrics can be cut into pieces to be used as cleaning cloths for industrial uses, fast fashion materials are too flimsy to be recycled in that way. A lot of discarded clothing ends up in incinerators or landfills. Chemicals in these garments can release toxins into the air if burned and they can leach into ground water if buried. Clothing is not biodegradable. Those made of natural fibers, such as cotton and silk, go through too many processes involving chemical changes to remain natural. Synthetic fibers, like polyester and nylon, are made from petroleum products that take hundreds of years to dissipate. Fast fashion appears to be meeting a perceived need of being up-to-date and stylish, but the current trend is producing unintended consequences. The cost of cheap clothing is not yet known in terms of the broader concerns about our environment.

Fast fashion is a term used by retailers to describe clothing based on catwalk designs which are made of cheaper fabrics and mass produced to bring the most recent fashion trends to the general public.

Willow Health Emporium

Improve your well-being and enhance your life! DANI STRINGER Willow Health Emporium is a family-owned and operated brick and mortar store located in Fort Collins, CO. We have a passion for healthy living and believe that when we improve our well-being, we enhance our lives. We are proud to provide Northern Colorado and the surrounding areas with high-quality wellness products containing cannabinoid-rich whole hemp extract. We offer a variety of hemp extract products to meet everyone’s needs, are very knowledgeable about our products and are happy to assist each valued customer. We also carry luxurious hempseed oil bath and body care products. You may have heard of cannabinoids, but what are they? Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis sativa plants (commonly known as Hemp or Marijuana) that interact naturally with our endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is one of the most important parts of the body’s method for maintaining health and facilitating healing — it’s present in humans and animals. It has a crucial role in regulating and maintaining our physiology, mood, and every day experience. Research has shown cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol (CBD), to have antitumor, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antipsychotic, anticonvulsive, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Given all of these beneficial properties, CBD has the

potential to affect your health in numerous positive ways. Whole hemp extract comes from industrial hemp and contains 0.3% or less of THC (1 of the 85+ cannabinoids found in hemp); making it legal to buy and sell in all 50 states. It is rich in CBD and other cannabinoids, and it is not psycho-active… meaning it will not get you high. The hemp extract used in the brands we carry is all locally grown in Colorado, and registered with the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Whole hemp extract is the natural compound that has been credited with the successful treatment of children with seizure disorders, adults with neurological conditions, and people with chronic pain. We believe that whole hemp extract is a powerful tool for people to gain control of their

quality of life, and it is the future of healthy living in our community. We encourage everyone to research the amazing hemp plant and its therapeutic benefits. Stop by Willow Health Emporium next time you are in midtown Fort Collins — we’d love to say hello and discuss what we have to offer to support your wellness. Dani Stringer earned a BS in Anthropology, where she focused on the culture of healing in communities. She has always had a passion for her community and empowering others to take charge of their own health and healing. Sandra Recommends Change, Baby, Change I've heard Sarah Palin's "Drill, Baby, Drill" mantra again recently, and it led me to a better one for 2017: "Change, Baby, Change". So here's my perspective as to how to move beyond making noise to really effecting positive change.

PHOTO: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU

As I mentioned in the Publisher’s Note, we can be rebels by the daily choices that we make; we can cause shifts in the marketplace by making more conscious decisions that are both large and small. But I appreciate that this can be overwhelming at first. Where to start? I think most spiritual teachers would agree that the place to start is with yourself. After numerous interviews with wellness practitioners and personal research, it is my understanding that how we perceive reality and react to others is a product of our subconscious programming. Hang on because this is techie talk but important! Our subconscious mind is programmed by age 8 and serves as the operating system for the rest of our lives. Our subconscious mind is more expansive and quicker than our conscious mind — and it’s there to make split second decisions to protect us. If you were raised in an environment where you were told that you are ugly, stupid, a failure, etc., guess what types of decisions that operating system is going to lead you to make later in life? Ones that fall back upon your core beliefs and result in you seeming to be stupid and a failure. On the other hand, if you were raised in a loving environment and were told that you are smart, a great athlete, creative, worthy of success, etc., guess what types of decisions you will make? Exactly. My point being that if you are having difficulties, it’s likely not everyone else’s fault. If you find it difficult to show compassion to others because everyone else has an annoying problem, well it’s time to step back. Take a beat and look inward. What do you really think about yourself? Dig up what you REALLY think about yourself, because those thoughts are creating your outer world. If what you discover is not positive, then it’s time to get to work. Affirmations may be of limited value because they deal with the conscious mind. There are modalities like meditation, hypnosis, PSYCH-K, and emotional freedom technique (EFT or tapping) that can reprogram the subconscious. Check out our print or online directory to find practitioners in NoCO, and get ready to turn over a new leaf in 2017. The next thing we all need is knowledge about better choices to make. Unfortunately going with the conventional flow will not lead to the healthiest foods, lifestyles, and health care. There’s so much crap out there it’s incredible, and too much money to be made off of sick people (*setting soap box aside for now*). This is where books and documentaries are so useful, because once you learn this stuff, you can unlearn it, and so taking action is inevitable. And winter days are a perfect time to indulge in both. If you want to learn how to eat and enjoy real food, then books by journalist Michael Pollan are a great start. In Defense of Food and Food Rules are masterful and his Netflix series Cooked (based on his book of the same name) will leave you spellbound.

To learn even more about the junk in our food supply, check out The Unhealthy Truth by Boulder, Colorado resident Robyn O’Brien. She is a crusader for free-from foods, and draws a nice dotted line between all the junk that’s out there making corporations rich and us sick. Warning: You’ll want to banish the unsavory likes of Count Chocula and Tony the Tiger from your domicile. If you’re a mad foodie and want to delve into regenerative farming, then anything by farmer Joel Salatin will fit the bill — there’s The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer and Everything I Want to do is Illegal. There’s also a film about the Salatin’s farm in Virginia called Polyfaces that you can download at http://www.polyfaces.com/. You’ll want to hug the next organic farmer that you see. Been there. Or if you’re like me and just enjoy food porn, there’s Chef’s Table on Netflix and Eat the World with Emeril Lagasse on Amazon video. You’re welcome. And then there’s harnessing the power of the mind. Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. is a must read because he shows the correlation between our thoughts and our health. Amazing stuff. There’s also Before Happiness by positive psychology expert Shawn Achor. Want to work on your understanding about life, the universe and everything? Fabulous reads would include anything by Eckhart Tolle, such as The Power of Now and A New Earth; Our Pristine Mind: A Practical Guide to Unconditional Happiness by Orgyen Chowang; and The Journey Within and The Journey Home by Radhanath Swami. If mind = blown is more your speed, then The Disappearing Universe by Gary R. Renard needs to read immediately, if not sooner. Interested in becoming a more conscious consumer? Down load the Story of Stuff at http://storyofstuff.org/movies/story-ofstuff/. It’s a fast-paced 20-minute look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. There’s also The True Cost on Netflix, a documentary that asks “Who pays the price for our clothing?”. You won’t look at retailers of fast, cheap fashion the same way any longer because you’ll understand the steep price others pay for that $9.99 garment that you’ll wear for a month and then throw out. I would be remiss if I didn’t emphasize how important it is to work within our political system. Do you know who the governor of CO is, who your representative is, who our 2 CO senators are? If not, Google it and make your voice heard about issues that matter to you. Call their offices, get on their email lists, follow them on Facebook, and go their town halls. Hold them accountable for their actions. And when they forget about their constituents and just cater to their corporate overlords? Vote ‘em out. Buh-bye.

Our subconscious mind is more expansive and quicker than our conscious mind — and it’s there to make split second decisions to protect us.

We can change ourselves and our world. Who’s in?

BIOPHOTON BioPhoton Colorado Irina Gilligan 970-581-5864 biophotoncolorado@gmail.com www.biophotoncolorado.com Every cell in our body has its own light emission. These light impulses are called biophotons and are used by the body for communication between cells. They carry messages that enable the receiving cells to carry out their functions and send out further information. The biofeedback device, Chiren, checks the quality of light your cells emit, finding and removing disturbances on the energetic body, restoring immune functions, and activating self-healing ability of the body. This safe, non-invasive therapy benefits adults, children and animals with wide a range of health issues. If you have health issues and have tried conventional medicine without much success, biophoton therapy may be the answer for you.

LIFE COACH/LABYRNTH FACILITATOR

PSYCH-K, EFT, EMOTION CODE

Phyllis Kennemer, Ed. D. 970-622-0858 Loveland, CO pkkbooks@comcast.net www.Paths4Change.com Change is a constant in life. Some changes occur through conscious choice; others offer unexpected challenges. How you deal with change determines, to a large extent, the amount of happiness you experience. Sometimes it is helpful to have a guide on the side, providing help with the myriad of choices and decisions that need to be made. When the reasons for making specific decisions are traced back, a fundamental discovery emerges. Almost all decisions come from a place of fear or a place of love deep within the person. A coach can help you make more love-based decisions; conscious decisions that move you toward your personal vision of the life you want to live. Call me for a free consultation.

Judith Albright, MA 970-218-8643 Judith@stressfreewitheft.com www.stressfreewitheft.com Just like suitcases get scuffed and battered with use, our lives start showing wear and tear as we are tossed about by all the ups and downs. In our lifetime, each of us seen many things, had many experiences, and made countless decisions; some good and some bad. For years, life may continue to unfold smoothly, but when we start hitting the rough spots how do we handle them? I help clients unpack the suitcase and start sorting through all the unprocessed emotional issues that have been concealed within it. While nothing can ever change past events, what can be changed is your reaction to them. Let me show you what is possible with PSYCH-K, EFT and Emotion Code.

MASSAGE THERAPY Om Shanti Healing Jill Ufer, LMT, HTP-A, CYT 970-310-4522 1914 Bowsprit Dr., Fort Collins, CO www.omshantihealing.com It is my intention to provide a warm and welcoming place for those in need of healing. My purpose as a professional body worker is to heal the body utilizing all of these techniques. Having appreciation for each individual and where they are on their healing path, I can offer my help to them energetically, physically, mentally and spiritually. Mention this ad and receive $10 off your visit. Sarah M. Babbitt, RMT 970-472-0766 sarahbabbittrmt@gmail.com www.sarahbabbitt.massagetherapy.com I have had the good fortune of being a Massage Therapist since 1995, and the longer I work in this field the more I love it. I have passion for both the art and the science of bodywork. I enjoy using my knowledge of anatomy and physiology, along with getting to know you and using my intuition, to get to the root cause of your pain or dysfunction. I try to never make assumptions about what my clients need. Instead, I listen carefully and then use my 19+ years of experience to tailor each session to your specific needs - ultimately helping you to feel better and move more optimally. I provide Swedish Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Lymph Drainage, Aromatherapy, & More.

MEDICAL INTUITIVE/ENERGY HEALING Francesca Fleming 503-805-7403 Francesca@Be-Joy.com www.be-joy.com During readings, I ‘scan’ your body from genes to aura to check your current state and generate a unique ‘map’ of guidance to help you heal — a nutritional program or supplements may be suggested. I believe we are more than a physical body, and often it is an emotion, negative belief or past event that is the trigger for disease, so I also offer healing and coaching sessions to eliminate emotional or spiritual blocks. The healing modalities I use include Reiki, Pranic Healing, Reconnection™, Vibration Healing, Crystal Healing, Color Healing, Sound Healing, Chakra Clearing and Balancing, and Aura Clearing. Located in Portland, OR and offering services worldwide by phone. All information is not a substitute for a doctor’s diagnosis.

ROLFING Evolve Rolfing and Wellness Erika Olsen 970-402-3988 417 S. Howes St., Fort Collins, CO 80521 evolverolfing@gmail.com www.evolverolfing.com I have long been intrigued by the human body and its adaptability and don’t believe discomfort is a natural state. It’s a shame that our culture accepts pain as a part of life. Our hobbies, sports, and work often do result in dysfunctional patterns in our bodies, but through increasing body awareness, movement education and encouraging the body to return to organization and efficiency, pain can be avoided. I regularly attend Rolf Institute® continuing education classes and continue to become trained in related healing techniques, including Healing Touch, Trauma Release Therapy, Rossiter Coaching, Exercise Therapy and Raindrop Technique. Feel free to take advantage of my free consultations over the phone or in person.
