Publisher’s Note SANDRA G. MALHOTRA, Ph.D
I was a teen-ager at the peak of Prince’s popularity in the 80’s and a fan of his music, so his recent death hit me hard. Baby, that was much too fast…he was in his prime and still creating. He was a beautiful spark and it resonates when a bright spark leaves this world too soon. It resonates even more when many sparks are savagely extinguished, like in the Orlando nightclub. Sometimes it can seem like too much. So I meditated and one of my favorite Prince lyrics from Let’s Go Crazy popped into my mind: “Dearly beloved We are gathered here today To get through this thing called life Electric word, life It means forever and that's a mighty long time But I'm here to tell you There's something else The after world” “Electric word, life” stood out — because how simple and complex at the same time. The word electricity, to me, signifies movement and creation because in the language of science, electricity typically refers to the movement of charged particles through space. And those feisty particles power devices and machines that create amazing things. That Prince connected electricity to life is sheer brilliance because isn’t life really all about moving and creating? Stagnant water does not breed life; fresh, flowing water does. Hate is heavy and stagnant; love is light and movement.
When I took a good look at all of the articles in this issue of Regenerate, I realized they are, indeed, all about moving and creating. Moving through self-imposed mental blocks so you can Be All That and Then Some; getting to the other side of trauma; manipulating your muscles, nervous system and connective tissue with modalities like massage, chiropractic and the Rossiter System; expanding your spiritual awareness; creating nutritious food and delightful objects; and propelling your career forward. I hope that you enjoy reading the articles in this issue as much as we enjoyed creating them, and that you find something that you can use on your journey. I’d love to hear about which features are your favorites and what you would like to see in upcoming issues. So, you wake up one morning and think, “Wow, this is my life; this wasn’t what I had planned for myself”. Now what? There must be something that kept you from achieving the life of your dreams, but what is that something? Maybe it is a rocky relationship, no relationship, family drama, job loss, the responsibility of raising kids or a demanding career. We all have that “something” in our lives. You want more. But what is “being all that and then some”? Sometimes it doesn’t look so pretty. “Being all that” can be the “ugly cry”. Knowing that you have to get up and keep moving even though your heart is damaged in more ways than you can count. It’s when we overcome what we think we can’t possibly overcome or we don’t want to overcome.
I would like you to know that courage is NOT the absence of fear; courage is the ability to act, even though you are afraid. It takes courage to break through that fear barrier. You can rise above with courage, vulnerability and keeping your heart open, even when it’s screaming “Shut Down!”. You have to have faith in yourself even though you feel you are standing on the precipice, staring into the abyss. You can’t judge yourself; you must take the EGO out of the equation and move forward as though your life depends on it. Don’t focus on the “What If” or the past. Sometimes you don’t turn around, you just keep walking, keep moving forward. You can rise above and be

greater than, in this very moment, right now. It sometimes really sucks! But, the GREATER THAN doesn’t happen until you engage COURAGE. “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not the absence of fear.”— Mark Twain You are your ship’s captain; you are the navigating your vessel through the stormy seas. You can choose to visualize your life as the Titanic; a sinking ship, or, you can visualize life on the other side of the Fear Barrier! What do you choose? My father was a teacher and had the summer months off. He chose to work outside during the summers and manage a swimming pool and coach the swim team. I was 8 years old and it was the afternoon of my first ever swim meet. I was scared to death! What does an 8-year-old little girl do when she is terrified? She runs away and hides. I hid in what I thought was the most logical place, the woman’s bathroom. All of a sudden, I hear an announcement over the loud speaker, “Heather Muno, telephone call”. Really? Me? Who could possibly be calling me — how exciting! So, I ran out of the bathroom and there was my coach, standing there. I knew at that very moment I was no longer in hiding. He grabbed me, ran down to the pool and put me on the swim block. The gun went off, I stood there, shaking. My coach pushed me in the water. What choice did I have now? I had no time to be afraid. I swam as fast as I possibly could. I put all of the energy I had into that one lap. I finished that race and this became the beginning of my illustrious and quite productive swimming career. Sometimes we crack ourselves open and sometimes life cracks us open. Either way, it’s a blesson (blessing and a lesson). You have to take your EGO out of the Power equation! You have to step back and make a pact with yourself that you won’t overanalyze, and you won’t judge. You simply have to be in the present moment and really feel the experience. Feel what it is like to have what’s on the other side of the wall, as though you already have it. I once wanted a new job so very much. But, I was afraid, what if I didn’t get the job? What if they liked another candidate better? Nobody likes to be rejected. I really wanted this job so I decided I was going to jump that FEAR wall. So I made a business card with the company logo with my name and title as if I already had the job. I posted the cards everywhere around me. Guess what? I got the job. But, I didn’t just visualize the other side of the wall, I felt as if I already had the job. We all need to put ourselves up on a pedestal, not from an ego state but rather from a LOVE state. We need to raise our glasses to honor ourselves and see ourselves as victorious and capable of overcoming any obstacle that stands in our way.

Literally visualize and feel yourself blasting dynamite through the FEAR wall. Feel the strength and sturdiness of the tall ladder you built to climb the wall. Remember those devices that catapult rocks over the castle wall in medieval times? I Imagine you are the rock being hurled over that wall and feel the wind. We ALL have the fuel (the courage) within us to make positive changes in our lives and move past this FEAR state. Sometimes life throws a few crumbs of what you can expect on the other side. You have to let the universe know that you aren’t going to accept the crumbs; you want the whole cake! Then, go and get that cake! I don’t want you to think that crashing through this FEAR BARRIER is easy, it isn’t. It will take commitment, energy and perseverance. You may fall. Just know that getting back up takes courage and with courage, you have the absence of fear. You got this! Here are some ideas to help you “Be All That and Then Some.” 1. Gratitude Jar Each day, write on a small piece of paper something you are grateful for and date it. Place the paper in the jar. When you need inspiration or a lift in your attitude, pull a few out of the jar and read them. Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership. 2. Decision Meter We are all intuitive souls. You just have to listen. Sit in a quiet place and become present. Take a few deep breaths. Tell yourself something you know to be true. Now, really feel whether this is true or false (yes or no). Where in your body do you feel the answer to this question? In your heart center? In your gut? Everyone is different but realize where you feel your truth. Now, say something you know to be false. Where do you feel the answer to this question? It will always be felt in a different area than your truth answer. Use this when you need to make a yes/no decision. This is a powerful tool. 3. Meditate Each and every day, try to find 10–15 minutes or longer to just sit with yourself. Quiet your mind and feel the love in your heart. Visualize and feel yourself already living your dream. The Lazy Days of Summer JUDITH ALBRIGHT, MA Lazy? Are you kidding? I don’t have time to be lazy! Haven’t we convinced ourselves of that? Summer was once a time when life slowed down and people took a break from their normal lives. Families routinely gave themselves a time out. Whether they packed up the dog and the kids and fled to the mountains or the seashore to escape the heat, or they simply relaxed at home, people spent as much time as they could engaged in laid back activities such as lying in a hammock, sitting in the shade with an icy beverage, watching the clouds float by, making homemade ice cream, reading a book or splashing in the water. Looking back, those idyllic times now seem like a fairy tale. In today’s world too many of us are locked into grueling schedules, punishing deadlines, heavy responsibilities, and too much to do in too little time. We may think we are too busy even to take a break, much less sit around doing nothing. This is typical of the American way of life. Europeans see things differently. It is a well known fact that Europeans work fewer hours than Americans. At the end of summer each year, the media is fond of reminding us that Europeans have just enjoyed weeks of leisure while we Americans have been tirelessly toiling away. These stories typically depict Americans as hard-working drones while Europeans bask in the good life of long lunches and time at the beach. The question then is, why do Europeans and Americans differ so much in their attitude toward work and leisure? A Time magazine essay stated it this way: “Broadly speaking, Americans value stuff — SUVs, 7,000-sq. ft. houses — more than they value time, while for Europeans it’s the opposite. Second, ... in the
puritanical version of Christianity that has always appealed to Americans, religion comes packaged with the stern message that hard work is good for the soul. Modern Europe has avoided so melancholy a lesson.” There are other reasons as well. Americans are accustomed to living in an “instant” age — one of instant coffee, instant replays, instant polls, and Instant Messaging — all in the pursuit of instant gratification. Thanks to technology, we can do this even faster. Our portable electronic devices allow us read our e-mail in the car, send text messages, access voicemail or make phone calls, all while wolfing down a breakfast burrito or some Pop Tarts heated up in the microwave. This behavior is a major social problem that has been plaguing us for years, but is gaining even more momentum now. In his book, Faster: The Acceleration of Just About Everything, James Gleick analyzes and explores our world of “evergrowing urgency.” Gleick argues that our technology-driven world has produced a “multi-tasking, channelflipping, fast-forwarding species who
hurries through work by multitasking, gulps down fast food, shops at convenience stores, yet loudly laments there is never enough time.” We keep racing through our days and weeks until one day we look back in amazement and lament how quickly the years have gone by. Or, we may finally hit a “speed bump” such as an illness that stops us cold. It is only then that we begin to realize the heavy toll we have paid to travel in the express lane. Living a slower paced, more satisfying life is a choice. There is no time like the present to establish a more peaceful inner self by defining what is really important and cutting out what isn’t. What better time to do this than during the “lazy days of summer?” Judith Albright, MA, is a stress management specialist who works with both individuals and groups to help people improve self esteem, neutralize stress and change underlying beliefs that are sabotaging their lives. Sustainability NATHAN CRANE Is sustainability a corporate marketing tactic, or the future of humanity? After 18 years of physical, mental and emotional selfdestruction, I was gifted with a vision for the possibility of a bright future. In 2005, after having destroyed both my internal and external environments with poisons, I began a deep cleaning process of both my physical and non-physical world. Juice fasts, master cleanses, raw food diets, meditation, detachment from all physical reality — swinging from one extreme to the other — eventually finding myself and seeking balance in the middle.
As I began to clean my inner world and rid myself of the “sustainable.” But I can assure you they are not. before we even know what happened. But all of those steps are critical on our journey towards sustainability, and we must take those steps every day. The important thing to consider is the long-term vision of what sustainability means, and to encourage ourselves to continue on the path towards 100% sustainability. The purpose for living sustainably is not just to avoid global catastrophe, but to experience the joy, love, abundance, simplicity, and bliss that comes with living close to the land with love in our hearts. It’s to know the abundant joy that comes with providing healthy food and basic needs for yourself and your family, and for spending your time exploring your creativity. This is how we were meant to live, but somehow along the way we’ve lost our path. It’s time to get back on the path towards true sustainability and build skills for the new world. It’s time to raise our spirits and remember our simple joyful existence in harmony with nature and to know what it’s like to have mutually dependent and beneficial trade arrangements with our neighbors. It’s time to take back control of our food supply and eliminate the need for processed, genetically modified, chemically infused food so that we might know what it’s like to enjoy the abundance of health we were meant to be showered with. This is my hope for the future, and this is why I’ve been

The Rossiter System
®
Extending and Simplifying Ida Rolf’s Teachings for Immediate Relief of Structural Pain SANDRA G. MALHOTRA, Ph.D
I had the pleasure of meeting Richard Rossiter, Certified Advanced Rolfer®, for a demo of the pain relief and mobility restoration modality called the Rossiter System® that he developed over 25 years ago. Before I describe Richard’s background, how the Rossiter System works and what a session is like, let me proclaim that IT WORKS WONDERS. When I met Richard I had annoying lower back pain, but after a ten-minute session it was gone and has not returned. Curious? Then please read on because I’d love for more people to learn about this effective modality for pain so they can use it.
So who is this caped crusader? Richard Rossiter is a former pain sufferer who developed chronic shoulder pain as a result of two wartime helicopter crashes plus the stresses and physical demands associated with flying a helicopter. After serving for a year as a U.S. Army pilot in Vietnam, he spent nine more years as a commercial helicopter pilot. On a friend’s recommendation, he turned to Rolfing to relieve his pain and was so impressed that he joined the profession. After treating clients with significant pain for over five years, Richard wanted to develop a method that focuses exclusively on resolving pain. He concluded that pain is why people go to doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists and finally structural integrators. Thus he wanted to figure out how to address pain.1 The Rossiter System® goes directly to the source of the pain by dealing with what is called connective tissue (CT). Wikipedia2 defines CT as one of the four types of biological tissue that support, connect, or separate different types of tissues and organs in the body. The other three types are epithelial, muscle, and nervous tissue. Connective tissue is found in between other tissues
everywhere in the body, including the nervous system. In the central nervous system, the three outer membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord are composed of connective tissue. CT in our bodies is like the steel girders in a sky scraper — in addition to our bones, it provides the structural support, and without it, we would not be able to stand upright. CT is critical, and when things go amiss with it, e.g., stress and immobility, pain can result. Overuse, misuse, underuse, injury and aging all shrink CT. Imagine what would happen to that skyscraper if the steel girders shrunk. Rossiter sessions are generally brief, yet amazingly effective. For my session, I laid down on a mat and Richard explained that the Rossiter System® is based on two concepts: weight and movement. The Rossiter Coach uses the foot to add weight to the client’s body while the client executes movements which engage the CT. The foot is used because it is a powerful tool that can cover a broader area than a hand or finger. Richard proceeded to address my lower back pain by pressing on my right quadriceps with his heel. (Not intuitive that my quads would influence my lower back pain, but if you consider CT to be one large, interconnected system, then it
makes sense.) Richard then zeroed in on the most tender part of my quad and got to work. He asked me to move my leg and feet in particular directions and proceeded to apply weight in 15 second bursts. I’m not going to sugar coat this – YIKES, it hurt. Then he worked on my left quad in a similar fashion and asked me to get up and see how I felt. Well, my lower back felt gr-r-r-reat! And it has continued to feel great, so those moments of pain as we worked through the tightness in my CT were well worth it. I was so impressed by the whole experience that I encourage anyone suffering with pain or mobility issues to explore the Rossiter System®. Bodacious Bodywork LYNETTE CHILCOAT Once in a while muscles, joints and ligaments are in need of alignment. The body’s basic infrastructure, our spine and the bones radiating out from that central vertebral column, can also use some tweaking now and then. Bodywork, such as chiropractic and massage therapy, can help our musculature and skeletal system run as a well-oiled, finely tuned machine…just as nature intended. If balance is maintained between these parts of our anatomy, it would make sense that other health issues will come in line, as well. To keep the body functioning at optimum capability, eating well, exercise and finding time for rest & respite are also encouraged. Fortunately for Northern Colorado residents, Dr. Summer Robidoux, owner of Walk-In Chiropractic in Loveland, agrees. According to Dr. Robidoux, “We are habitual creatures of human nature, and as we go through daily life, our continued repetitive motions create awesome imbalances in our bodies.” Her philosophy is to keep things both basic and contemporary. With a disposition as sunny as her name, Dr. Robidoux quickly and efficiently offers chiropractic treatments in short bursts meant to perpetuate the body’s equilibrium. She presses, pushes and pumps, again and again if needed. While swiftly locating, then alleviating a client’s area of discomfort, she exhibits a cheeriness that could be contagious (if it weren’t for the fact that said patient is likely in a compromising position, such as face down and presumably battling some level of pain.) Remarkably, she does it all standing up, in heels. Her practice offers maintenance adjustments for a single, low price. In about the same time (possibly less) than it takes to obtain fast-food from a drive-thru
window, a person can walk in feeling poorly and walk out right as rain. Along with Dr. Robidoux, there are two other practicing chiropractors and a licensed massage therapist available under the same roof. Robidoux mentions there are many other, more indepth forms of chiropractic care, as well, but her aim is to bring immediate relief from the day-to-day grind, without breaking the bank. “Our premise is to let the body heal naturally as we bring balance back, so a client can have the best communication between the brain and the nerves,” says Dr. Robidoux. “By offering both massage and chiropractic, the patient is allowed to relax, then adjust.” These combined services help improve patients overall health. Another of Walk-In’s chiropractors, Dr. Cash McMeans, “If there are tight muscles or muscle spasms inhibiting joints as well, then it can make it is more difficult to do chiropractic.” Targeted massage prior to chiropractic adjustment can make the treatment more beneficial. McMeans expounds on that theory, explaining how chiropractic works. “Specifically, we focus on the spine, muscles and the fixation of joints. Our primary point is moving bones and freeing up joints,” says McMeans. “The detection and removal of subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae or partial dislocations) is also important. What we are physically doing to correct it is putting an impulse in the spine to free up movement.” According to McMeans, the reason people most often walk through the doors for their expeditious treatment is for a simple adjustment. “All joints in the spine are checked, from the base of the skull down to the tailbone. If there is restriction of movement, it can lead to pain and soreness, numbness and tingling in the extremities and

even headaches,” says McMeans. The chiropractic thrust is a common adjustment, whereby a manual technique is used. (Think of kneading bread dough, only with much more controlled power behind the motion.)“ At this office, we use two types of techniques, the Diversify and the Thompson, which utilizes a special table,” adds McMeans. While there are many types of massage, Walk In’s therapist Shannon Bultena focuses solely on neuromuscular therapy, specifically the Body Insight method, which she learned at the Healing Arts Institute in Fort Collins. The pressure for this type of therapy is significant, compared with spa quality massage, which is commonly used mainly for relaxation. “Massage therapy helps to loosen muscles that are holding bones out of place,” explains Bultena. “Chiropractic can then more easily put those bones back into place.” An average 60-minute session includes Bultena first asking the client what exactly is bothering them. She then inquires as to whether there is anything that person wants worked on specifically. Generally, her concentration is on the neck, upper and lower back, and then extremities. With the combination of chiropractic and massage therapy, people may find relief from symptoms of such health issues as allergies, asthma, coughing and immune disorders as well — definitely worth the modest cost, which is slightly more for deep-tissue manipulation or simple touch therapy. The time investment is minimal and involves less effort than it would take to peruse the aisles of the local pharmacy for an over-the-counter alternative with its possible adverse side effects. Ignorance Is No Longer Bliss —
Confronting the Reality of EMFS PHYLLIS LIGHT, Ph.D
Do you feel well as a rule? Do you sleep well? Do you have plenty of energy to tackle your daily routine? Or, is the majority of your time spent fighting off colds, allergies, headaches, or even irritability and stress? Let’s talk about well-being in our modern, high-tech world. We are challenged here in ways that have never existed before on the planet!
Having felt thoroughly exhausted thirty years ago, even wondering if I was dying, I had to find answers for myself. My prayers pulled in a scientist who had researched the hazards of electromagnetic fields (EMF’s) and how they weaken our immune systems and cause tremendous fatigue. I learned that I was suffering from exposure to a plethora of electromagnetic fields and frequencies — from my computer, along with all the TV and radio frequencies being broadcast from overhead satellites. But that was long before cell phones were even invented! Fast forward to today’s world, with the advent of cell phones (and now smart phones), wireless internet (WiFi), Sirius radio, GPS, Homeland Security (which blankets cities with particular frequencies), text messaging, 4G networks, downloading TV shows, movies and more onto your TV or handheld devices. The air is now saturated with an unbelievable amount of EMF’s, and we are all getting bombarded by about 300,000 of these PER MINUTE at this time. It’s unreal what the human being is made to withstand in our world today. As my teacher taught me, these EMF’s have an unnatural effect on the human body, causing it to dysfunction in numerous ways. The immune system seems to be impacted the most, as it works hard, although unsuccessfully, to fight off this invisible enemy. This may be one big factor in the increase in immune and autoimmune system disorders in our world today. In 1990, Robert O. Becker, MD., shared what he had
20 Regenerate • July/August 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com
discovered in his book, Cross Currents: The Perils of Electropollution, the Promise of Electromedicine, corroborating and elaborating on what my teacher had told me a few years before. “Electromagnetic fields activate the body’s stress response and produce changes in nearly every bodily function, including a significant decline in the effectiveness of our immune systems. Other negative effects of EMF’s include their negative impact on the cardiovascular, endocrine, growth control, and central nervous systems.” Twenty-five years ago, I would recommend that people take a periodic break from their computers, because of the detrimental energy field surrounding the computer. Now people carry their computers, e.g. “smart phones,” in their hip or breast pocket or nearby purse. And then, when you want to communicate with someone, you “put your computer” next to your brain for a period of time. This inundates you with harmful radiation and causes the energy field around the brain to dysfunction. In 2002, Dr. George Carlo and Dr. Martin Schram did a study: Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age: An Insider’s Alarming Discoveries and Cancer and Genetic Damage. “One by one, alarming signs appeared: that cell phones interfered with pacemakers, that developing skulls of children are penetrated deeply by the energy emitted from a cell phone, that the blood brain barrier which prevents invasion of the brain by toxins can be compromised by cell phone radiation, and most startlingly, that radio frequency radiation creates

micronuclei in human blood cells, a type of genetic damage known to be a diagnostic marker for cancer.” I have a friend whose 73-year-old husband died for some unknown problem that arose in his colon, and the doctors couldn’t find anything in particular wrong with him. It turns out, he always carried his cell phone in his jacket pocket, right where his body started developing the problems. Correlation is not causation, but this is a cause for concern. This is why I say, “Ignorance is no longer bliss”. We cannot continue pretending that “All is well,” and “Oh, it’s just a cold...or allergy...or fatigue...”. We are all participating in a world-wide experiment called, “Let’s see how human beings do in a world that is wired electronically, and with air that is saturated with all sorts of electronic and electromagnetic fields”. This has never been done before, and we are continually headed in the direction of “more and more”. Truth be known, it came to me that in seven years, the
medical establishment will have seen so much damage in human bodies that they will finally acknowledge that there is a “new” problem that people are having from the overwhelming exposure to EMFs. My purpose is not to scare you, but to educate you so that you can take the steps necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones. In order to be open to finding the best solution, you must first be aware of the problem. Healing Through Poetry LAURA BUCK Spring is a promise of new beginnings which should not be overlooked. The earth’s stage lifts the curtain to reveal a timeless expression of renewed life. Mother Nature directs a choir of bright youthful tones joined by melodic showers for a welcome serenade to the land. Pink and purple petals awaken in vibrant vibrato to rising harmonies of healing light. Everything is new in Spring. Everything is fresh. As I was born in May, I feel more joy and strength at this time of year. It always fills me with hope of warm sunny days to come and relief from cold barren days.
Just recently, after evolving from a dark period in my life where I had considered suicide, I opened a new chapter … a season of Spring where I began writing poetry on my journey towards healing and self-realization. Prior to this time, I had many labels which followed me for 48 years. Shy, sweet, silly, good person, athlete and engineer were the descriptors others had given me or I had earned. I didn’t consider myself a poet, although I often had rhymes floating around in my mind. When I was a little girl my father nicknamed me, “Green Eggs and Ham,” because I loved the Dr. Seuss book so much, especially the rhyming. I made him read it to me over and over. Yet, I never pursued writing poetry. I laughed off my rhyming ability as a “quirky” part of my personality. This perception changed recently after I read a memorial about the late Layne Staley, the original lead singer of Alice in Chains. A few days earlier I had been moved by his performance on an MTV Unplugged recording from 20 years ago. Something about him caught my attention. Below the surface of his frail frame and downcast bloodshot eyes was a deeper beauty being released with sensitivity and power through the amazing gift of his vocals. When I looked up more information about him on www.layne-staley.com, I found his memorial which was written by Barrett Martin, a former Zen monk and
bandmate of his in Mad Season. As I was reading, one phrase jumped out at me. He stated, “Layne Staley felt as though he was on a spiritual mission through his music. Not a rock mission, a spiritual mission. And I think that is evident in his words and the timbre of his voice.” The words, “spiritual mission” hit me hard. It gave me a desire to want to discover my authentic self and my gifts without other people’s projections. I knew I had some natural ability for both writing and rhyming. I was immediately moved to write my first poem. I cried the entire time. It was a heartfelt release of buried emotions caused by unattended wounds, including rape from many years ago. It felt like a deeper part of myself was being expressed in a very intuitive way, the words mirroring a pure reflection of me. Since then, writing poetry has become an essential part of my path to healing and finding myself. I have come to realize that we are all made with gifts, and these are meant not only to help us grow, but to share with the world. Sharing ourselves with others through our gifts and the lessons we learn represents the spiritual connection we all have. Finding and expressing your gifts is being true to yourself and embracing yourself. For me it has brought an unprecedented joy and sense of wholeness that I have never experienced before. It has simply helped to know myself better.

“The Castle” Awakened and healed True identity revealed 99 lifetimes it took me to see The destructive patterns and choices not free Value held captive by walls so unkind A cold ruined dwelling for the 99th time. A handsome young man with a knock at the door My valuables stolen, then reputed as a whore The ball kept rolling as another surmised Through my wounded walls, in walked his deaf pride Frozen again, I could not win Self-loathing low clouds now hovered within Two more moonless nights, my rubble lay prey Till I swept it aside, and locked it away. A faithful rework found some strength to regain New landscape pure green brought a season of change Three sheep gathered nearby, drawn down from the hills Yet overcast weather did shadow me still. With an untimely gust, a tall gent arrived My sheep dog Duke warned me of his disguise But I took in the stranger, my kindness I shared He stole my dwelling, then trashed it without care He ruled my walls for years and years More dark clouds rolled in with rain from my tears “Your home is ugly,” he said to me Looking out for help, I caught site of my sheep For they had doubled while my vision had grown Tired of his lies I banned him from my home. My walls were weak with fresh wounds to wear Dull dismal skies met growing despair A handyman came and helped fix things up Some repairs restored much value and love But the grey haze loomed not letting in light He said, “This design lacks mindful insight” “Break it down and rebuild it this way” “I’m always right, whatever I say.” We parted ways and I stared at the walls Some blocks of repair did crumble and fall Scattered and tired, a rejected dwelling Old voices grew louder, a hopelessness yelling I climbed up the winding stairs to the top The storm clouds sank lower and repeated, “Don’t stop” I looked down to the ground on both sides of my home The landscape revealed 99 tombstones Ninety on one side and nine on the other They all said my name, waiting for another Then the earth opened up at the 99th tomb It said, “Come on, I’m ready for you.” I looked at Duke who was standing right by He said to me, “Please don’t say goodbye” “Why are you sad when you have me?” “You’re perfect, you’re whole, don’t you know you are free?”

I glanced up and saw a break in a cloud A glimmer of light shined in on my doubt “God, please help me, I want to be free” “I want to be whole, the fulfillment of me.” I backed up from the ledge and waited all night The next morning I woke up to a much greater light More clouds had cleared, more brightness shone through Illuminating the landscape with a new view My sheep’s loving faces now surrounded my home A formation implying, “You’re not alone.” My eyes lifted up, drawn back to the sky A comet of truth awakened my third eye A warmth from within melted my heart A radiance flowed out of my chest through my arms. I gazed out again to the army of sheep Then my opened third eye revealed them to me For they were not sheep, these creatures of white But a host of angels guarding me day and night. My sight was then captured by my loyal dog Duke Next to the angels, still commanding them too His light was so bright that I closed my eyes My faithful companion now stood by my side. “My real name’s Yeshua and I love you so” “This 99th lifetime I’ve awakened your soul” “You’re a perfect creation with valuable gifts” “Now that you can see, go forward, pursue this” “When you’re the true you, your heart emits joy” “Life lessons are realized, so forgive those boys” “Your journey is beautiful, these walls are restored” “You’ve been whole all along and always adored” “99 lifetimes, the pattern stops here” “Now go forward in love, we’ll always be near.” I realized that moment (myself now aware) My value wasn’t stolen, it had always been there Self-worth is not found in others views It’s awake and it’s free in my spiritual truth Human is beautiful, many challenges are faced But my true identity can never be erased Hardships are meant to give me insight A soul needs darkness to help find the light. I reached up to the sky, it’s bright clarity redeemed It’s joy and beauty reflected in me My eyes now wide open as I scan through the land Unlimited possibilities on these great walls I stand. Volunteer Tourism BARB MATTSON
Did you ever consider taking a personal vacation for humanitarian reasons? Or consider offering your administrative skills to help set up an orphanage in Chile?
Every day, more and more of us are starting to ask ourselves how we can make a difference whether it be for cultural, ecological, or for environmental reasons. We want to expand our personal, mental, and educational borders and grow so we can become more aware of the world around us. Travel helps us do just that. Rather than the yearly trip to Cancun or the Caribbean, we’re trying something entirely different which makes a change in someone’s life for the better. I was introduced to the concept of volunteer tourism about 10 years ago when my daughter was in middle school. One of her teachers had a dream to build a small lending library for a community of children in the country she would regularly vacation in. She wanted to make a difference. That year, my daughter signed up to be part of the group of students which would travel to San Juan Del Sur, in the country of Nicaragua. They would spend a week at the school and assist with the set up of the library while also visiting with children in the area. They collected clothes to donate before they left the states and each student filled up an extra suitcase and brought it down to give to the needy families. Both the students and the children were changed inside and out. Visiting another country gave them a
different perspective. It allowed them to grow into young adults who desire to make a difference and who are unafraid to color outside the accepted lines of society. There are so many different volunteering opportunities available and there is no age limit. You can volunteer on an organic farm in New Zealand or learn about the special care of elephants in a sanctuary designed for just that purpose in Indonesia. The most important thing is to decide what you would like to do as there are so many opportunities and needs for volunteer work. There are many businesses which send their staff overseas in an effort to expand their life experience and create a deeper sense of fulfillment in their given careers. Volunteer tourism isn’t just travel, it’s the opportunity for creating a new purpose for yourself, stepping out of your comfort zone and making a difference in someone else’s life … someone in desperate need of what you can give. Before you commit your time and intention to a company, it is important to do some research. Find out everything you can about them in an effort to be sure they are not totally self interest. In other words, they are not in it for the money and nothing else. Some very reputable companies are:
• www.wwoof.net • www.goeco.org • www.volunteerhq.org • www.gviusa.com Most companies which do this on a regular basis will provide help through the entire process. Some will have fees which cover the initial costs of research and the application. However, the experience is all worth it for them so they may help you through it. For those with limited funds, there are national organizations which can give you a similar experience by allowing you to volunteer in programs such as Habitat for Humanity, which I have personally participated in. I challenge you to travel differently. Make an impact on someone’s life. It will enrich your own. Travel is an adventure of the soul which opens your mind and heart to a new world around you. On Taking a Healing and Embracing a Miracle, Part 2
Spirit
From A Healer’s Diary
RENE VILLARD-REID
For an angel of the Lord went down at appointed seasons into the pool and moved and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was cured of whatever disease with which he was afflicted. John 5:4 “I’m healed, Rene,” he said. “I know it!” Yes, he knew it and I knew it. Seems simple, but few things are ever what they seem. He reappeared two weeks later with the news we both expected — his tests revealed no cancer. Regardless of the facts, the doctors were mistrustful. In their minds, there was no explanation for the disappearance and it could just as easily reappear. The oncologist as well as several other physicians encouraged Jeff to begin the protocol for prostate cancer as a preventative measure AND he agreed. At the same time, he wanted to continue healing work with me in the same spirit. By definition, the word prevent means to anticipate. I was amenable to addressing the emotional issue or issues that had created the fertile ground for cancer, but in no way did I see it as preventative. As long as Jeff thought preventative, he anticipated its return. He was not living in the moment of Love which had blessed him … not just for the moment … but for the rest of his life. People beg and pray for miracles and yet when the Universe does indeed wink — the ego begins its howling siege as it plants seeds of doubt and fear which sabotage the Truth. With fear having displaced Love, the ultimate healer, there is no room for God or the angels.
Jeff’s attitude so perplexed me I decided to visit my own physician for a reality check. As I’m a medical intuitive, he’d helped me in the past to identify what I saw in a body and would clarify my psychic perceptions. More so, as his father was a hands-on-healer in Iraq, he was familiar with miracles, believed in them and saw them as gifts from God. When I described the case to him, he grimaced as if he’d tasted something bitter, which was evidenced by what he said next. “He should have picked up his pallet and walked. He should have gotten on his knees and thanked God and gone home. The cancer will return. Maybe not now, but if he pursues these plans, it will return at some time in the future.” This pronouncement got my attention and as a result sent me to my Bible. I was familiar with the passage but not the entire parable. I found it in John 5: 2-14. There was a pool called a Bethesda and many sick people would come there ‘waiting for the bubbling up of the water.’ An angel would descend at different times of the year and stir up the water and whoever got into the pool first was healed. A man who came daily, had suffered from a long, lingering illness, which had lasted thirty-eight years. Jesus www.RegenerateMagazine.com • July/August 2016 • Regenerate
29
noticed him lying helplessly, knowing he’d already been there a long time and asked him, “Do you want to be healed?” In other words, are you really serious about this? The man complained he’d no one to help him to the pool when the water stirred or if someone did help, others would get in ahead of him. Jesus didn’t pity the man. He said, “Get up! Pick up your bed and walk!” Instantly the man became well, recovered his strength and did as he was bidden. Awhile later, Jesus returned and found him there again and said to him, “See, you are well! Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you!” In Hebrew, the root word of sin means forgetfulness. It’s not about what you’re doing but whether you are conscious or unconscious in your actions. Are you doing something from self remembering or have you forgotten your true self? The true self is whole and complete in spirit and as a child of God. Jeff wasn’t strong enough in his soul to approach his health in a new perspective, which meant to embody his miracle and allow it to transform and change his life. He needed to pick up his pallet and walk, go and sin no more OR … well the ‘or’ was the cancer which returned five years later and claimed his life — just as the good doctor had predicted. If he’d put on the new man, his path and outcome would have been entirely different. How did Jeff forget his true self? Where did he miss the mark? We know he was reasoned out of his experience. Can we blame the doctors for this? Perhaps in part. But there was a deeper problem as I discovered. Jeff didn’t believe he deserved his healing which led to the abandonment of the miracle. You see, Jeff had two opportunities to be healed. The first was miraculous and any old emotional issues attached to the disease would’ve found resolution in his faith and appreciation in God. He would have acted and moved forward with a renewed sense of himself. The second opportunity was in his continued healing work for the purpose of addressing the emotional issue connected with the disease. I’ve had many case histories in which emotional issues once released, caused malignant tumors and cancers to disappear. In Jeff’s case, he had a past marriage, which had emasculated him (prostate cancer), destroyed his self esteem and continued to do so. He’d had a subsequent affair that led to divorce. His ex-wife was embittered, unforgiving and angry. Combined with Jeff’s Catholic beliefs and inherent guilt, she was glad to never let him forget. Forgiveness of oneself and others is a powerful elixir
for healing cancer. As long as guilt and shame fester within the soul, the beauty and wholeness is eroded and will eventually move into the body as disease. For some, it’s easier to die. Jeff didn’t need his ex-wife’s forgiveness. HE NEEDED TO FORGIVE HIMSELF. It says in the Course in Miracles that “the unforgiving mind sees no mistakes, but only sins … It wants to live, yet wishes it were dead. It wants forgiveness, yet it sees no hope. It wants escape, yet can conceive of none because it sees the sinful everywhere.” God doesn’t need to forgive as He already loves us and knows our end from our beginning. But we do need to forgive ourselves and others. To forgive means to no longer hold ourselves or another hostage over a real or perceived hurt. At the core of each and every one of us our soul and spirit remain untouched by events and hurts. Our eternal self is always safe and unchanged. But our perceptions in this world say otherwise. Our mind creates nightmares of reality that have no substance but can restrain us as if we were in actual chains. Jeff’s mind and perceptions held him captive — NOT the doctors, NOT his ex-wife. Jeff was unable to accept God’s miracle because at a deeper level he felt unworthy of His Love. We see in the story of the prodigal son, where the young man had been a squanderer and profligate with his inheritance. He eventually returned home battered, ashamed and in fear of reprisal and in spite of all this, he knew he had nowhere else to go. Yet, he was met by his father with open welcoming arms. He was not met with judgement or criticism, but love. The allegory is clear. He came home to God and to himself. Forgiveness creates health and unburdens the spirit. It refreshes the soul and is the key to peace of mind, peace in the body and peace in our spirit. Self forgiveness remembers that deep inside … you know whose child you are.
Forgiveness of oneself and others is a powerful elixir for healing cancer.

Tarot and Astrology for July and August JOY VERNON Leo: The Authentic Self Leo is represented by the tarot card Strength. The Strength card shows a woman holding a lion’s jaws with an infinity sign above her head. In some decks, a male hero subdues a ferocious beast, or sometimes a woman sits next to a broken pillar. The lion in the Strength card represents the difficult-tocontrol passions of the unconscious. The theme of the Strength card is to reveal yourself authentically — and inspire and empower others to do the same. The sign of Leo is ruled by the Sun,

Mercury enters Virgo and the mind steps deliberately onto the solitary and personal path of inner illumination. With this we are able to become of service to others. herself beautifying her environment or expanding beyond the loneliness of Self into the eternal comfort of Spirit—think of her tarot card, the Nine of Coins, showing a woman alone but satisfied in a beautiful garden. Then in the third week of August, the Sun in Leo casts a friendly nod to Uranus, who represents the freedom of rebellion and breaking boundaries. With lonely Venus in orderly Virgo now feeling the support of Pluto, planet of power and transformation in Capricorn, the sign which develops systems … our Self, recognizing its limitations, is inspired to break the mold and reform. The week ends with a full Moon in Aquarius and cresting the hill we see our soul’s journey laid before us. On August 22, with Mercury and expansive Jupiter conjunct in Virgo, the Sun enters that sign and momentarily reaches out to the Taurus Moon, who lovingly reminds us of the benefit of structure in our personal regimen or spiritual practice. Meanwhile, two important things happen. Mars connects with Saturn in Sagittarius, the ambitious warrior challenging Father Time’s naysaying in the sign of the cosmic hitchhiker, raring to go anywhere you will take him. These two planets square off against a retrograde Neptune in Pisces, where we can engage deep spiritual immersion or lose ourselves in escapist fantasies. The Saturn square Neptune configuration is considered by most astrologers to be the epitome of this year’s energy.
The Sun enters Virgo on August 22. The tarot’s Hermit card corresponds to this sign. The image shows an old man with a long white beard, wrapped in a hooded cloak and holding a lamp and staff, standing on a mountain top. The lamp represents spiritual illumination gained through inner work. In some decks, he holds an hourglass, associating him with Kronos, the Greek god of time, known as Saturn in Roman mythology. The Hermit asks us to walk our own path with discipline and austerity, to discover our answers within. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, represented by the tarot Magician, who demonstrates that we bring Spirit into manifestation via the tools we already have. August begins with the Sun, our Self, looking gently over to Saturn, the planet of endings and boundaries. With both in fiery signs, we feel encouraged to honestly acknowledge our limitations and through that truthful assessment expand ourselves into more than what we are. Soul 2 Soul: Answers to Metaphysical Questions SHAMAN AND MEDICINE WOMAN RENE VILLARD-REID
What Is A Shamanic Journey? — J.W. To begin with, the word shaman comes from the Tungus language in Siberia and means ‘to see in the dark.’ In order to see in the dark, a shaman closes his/her eyes to this world literally and enters an alternate state of consciousness (ASC) in order to journey to other realities. This is achieved by listening to the sonic drive of a drum. The monotonous sound alters the brain waves, induces a trance-like state and releases endorphins. Some cultures ingest a drug to achieve the trance, however my teachers discouraged the practice. For myself, the drum is alive and is a powerful vehicle for moving between the worlds and for producing an ecstatic state. Ecstasy comes from the Greek word exstasis, which means to ‘stand outside oneself.’ Therefore, the first intention of a journey is to leave this world behind or stand outside oneself and cross the bridge to another reality. The shaman then contacts his/her spirit helpers on the behalf of another as shamanic work is in service to others and their needs. A shamanic journey can be embarked upon to address the spiritual aspects of an illness or soul loss. It can also acquire information or guidance regarding one’s daily life or receive a Divine message or speak to a soul who has passed over. Further, it can speak to any kind of mental, emotional, physical or spiritual concern. Depending upon the issue, we decide which of three worlds we will journey to in an effort to gain the insight and perspective needed. These worlds are predicated upon an ancient cosmology which incorporates the lower, middle and upper worlds. Contrary to the belief that lower means something dark or negative, lower in the shamanic sense relates to a world of old wise spirits, power animals and teachers. It is the world we enter to seek healing information or to receive answers for questions which begin with who, what, how, or why. In other words, mundane concerns. While there, we solicit the assistance of our personal power animal or ally
spirits, which can be four-legged animals or winged creatures or even mythical beasts. Their purpose is to guide, help, protect and impart knowledge. The middle world looks like our world. We use it for a technique called tracking. In years past, I did a certain amount of missing person’s work and have also tracked a loved one to make sure they were safe. However, it was done with their permission, which is an important caveat. Journeying in middle world can also be a helpful tool for finding things you have lost or misplaced. The upper world is where we travel to seek Divine guidance and encounter loved ones who have crossed over, angels, saints, transcendent beings of light, masters and even Biblical and religious figures. In other words, it’s like visiting heaven. We enter this realm for the specific purpose of receiving spiritual messages or insights for our soul path or to interact with those who’ve passed on. One final and important thought. Shamanism IS NOT a religion. It is a powerful spiritual practice for maintaining inner and outer health and balance. It teaches us to live in harmony with mother earth as well as all other sentient beings. I encourage you to read any of Sandra Ingerman’s books on shamanism or go to www.sandraingerman.com. Sandra is the grande dame of shamanic practice in our Western culture and is a truly gifted shaman and teacher. Rene Villard-Reid is a gifted medical intuitive, shaman, medicine woman, hands on healer and spiritual counselor. She has practiced, lectured and taught for over 35 years throughout the state of California and the Eastern Seaboard. She has been a guest on radio talk shows and NBC TV in Boston. In the 80’s she had a monthly column and was a featured writer for the metaphysical magazine Aquarian Voices. Rene now teaches and heals through the medium of writing.

Ordinary beginnings
… Use words if necessary
Born Richard Slavin in 1950, Radhanath Swami comes from a simple family in the American Mid-West. At the age of 19, Richard hitchhiked and traveled around Europe as many other young people did at the time, which would make him indistinguishable save for the intention which drove his travels. While many traveled to explore the outside world, Richard was on an inner search, seeking his true purpose in life. One day, while sitting on a rock meditating in Greece, he heard a voice which said, “Go to India.” Without a map, he started the long and arduous trek to the east. Wherever he went, he asked of people, both simple and learned, about their religion. After Richard reached his coveted destination, he continue traveling India as a traditional monk while living with different spiritual groups and studying with them. Always respectful of all religious paths, the deep connection from the heart was eluding him - until he met Srila Prabhupada, his future teacher, and was introduced to bhakti yoga. There are different types of yoga, and in contrast to popular western belief, they are all geared towards reconnecting the soul with the Supreme. Bhakti yoga, Radhanath Swami explains, is “the path of connecting to God through serving others with love and compassion.”
“The essence of every religion is sincerity in cleansing our own hearts, and cultivating humility by honoring every living entity as a child of God.” This message is an intrinsic part of Radhanath Swami’s mission and lifestyle and its message is far reaching. His lively and gifted storytelling contributes to the impact of his lectures. His teachings are witty, clever and engaging; he is a master at coining catchy expressions such as, “When Apple and Blackberry were still fruit, life was much simpler.” Whatever topic Radhanath Swami speaks about, his message is always simple and profound, reaching both the mind and heart of his listeners, bridging any divisions of faith and uniting his listeners in their desire to be of better service towards the Supreme and our fellow living beings. Many of his speeches can be found at www.radhanathswami.com as well as on YouTube. Radhanath Swami is also the author of the bestselling book The Journey Home and the acclaimed newly released The Journey Within. In The Journey Home he recounts the story of his travels through India. The story runs the gamut of emotions while providing highly enlightening insights. Combined with his engaging writing style, this book is a page turner and has been translated into a number of languages. The Journey Within focuses on traversing the inner path and is filled with his trademark wisdom and compassion from beginning to end. It enables all to gain a richer perspective and deeper insight to their inner selves.
Preach always… The Bhagavad Gita says that all living beings are a tiny spark of the Supreme, which drives the material body. Thus all living entities are sacred beings, partaking in the qualities of the Supreme, although in a much smaller quantity. It is this respect for the sacredness in all life forms that fuels true compassion. “One thing that every spiritual path has in common is the characteristic of compassion. One who actually follows a spiritual path is an instrument of compassion,” Radhanath Swami says in one of his lectures. Compassion, seeing the beloved Supreme in all living beings and an unsurpassed attitude of humility and servitude have propelled Radhanath Swami towards establishing many charitable projects. One of the most prominent charity programs of Radhanath Swami and his followers is the feeding of 250,000 indigent school children in Mumbai with a daily lunch. In spite of the high demand for his presence and wisdom, Radhanath Swami hands out lunches himself whenever possible as he feels it is a privilege to serve — “A selfless life, a devotional life, a life of compassion — that is what real happiness is.” Radhanath Swami’s presence radiates this happiness of devotion and service. Another famous project by Radhanath Swami is the Govardhan Eco Village (GEV) near Mumbai, a model that illustrates ‘Simple Living & High Thinking’ in modern times: “Govardhan Ecovillage is a model farm community and retreat center highlighting the importance of spiritual ecology: the need for us to live in harmony with ourselves, nature and the sacred.” The idea is based on old Vedic scriptures from India that focus on service, rather than exploitation. Govardhan Eco Village exemplifies the best in organic farming and peaceful coexistence of many species, the latest and greatest in water conservation and waste management; it is a place where the latest environmental technology is combined with ancient spiritual wisdom and time-proven agricultural and building technologies, all in harmony with Mother Nature. The center offers yoga retreats and other activities for visitors from all over the globe who come here to recharge spiritually and physically as well as to learn about technologies which promote sustainability in other places too. Details about Govardhan Eco Village can be found at http://www.ecovillage.org.in/
A little swami with a huge impact Radhanath Swami is a master at shifting human views from the dualistic ‘good versus bad’ towards seeing the divine presence in everything. In his recent book, The Journey Within, he tells the story of a severely disabled child, and how the family’s shift in perspective helps them see their child’s condition as a blessing. In this story, we can see the hand of the Supreme in all situations. Rather than being swept away by dualistic thinking and the divisions that dominate differing political parties, religions and personal viewpoints, Radhanath Swami helps shift our focus towards the blessings which can be found everywhere. Instead of seeing good and bad, we are left with divine arrangements. The “little swami,” as Radhanath Swami likes to call himself, comes from an ordinary middle class family, like many of us. His love for God is steadfast and infectious. His compassion and tireless service are beyond the scope of most. When asked how people can make a difference in the world, Radhanath Swami replied: “Every single one of us can make an incredibly beautiful difference in the world we live and that’s what gives life meaning. If we think, “I’m so small. I can’t make a difference,” then we won’t make a difference. But if we can even help one person in our life, that is a tremendous accomplishment, greater than winning the World Cup or being a world champion. The quality is really important and we could all make a difference, big or small.” “God reveals true love to the world through the lives of those who love Him,” he once told his followers. He himself is one of the greatest revelations of true love in our time. Annette Kahmann is an aspiring practitioner of bhakti yoga and strives to treat all living beings with compassionate respect and to be of service to them. Redefining Bug Spray MARIAH KORNBERG-DEGEAR
Over the past few years, there has become a heightened awareness of mosquito-borne diseases, including the notorious Zika virus. At the same time, a need has grown for alternatives to the potent over-the-counter products such as DEET, which has potential damaging side effects for high-risk individuals, including children and elderly adults. A tremendous amount of research and development has been dedicated to the study and usage of Eucalyptus citriodora, commonly known as Lemon Eucalyptus. The chemical constituents in Eucalyptus citriodora have been endorsed and tested by the Center for Disease Control and other reputable sources including WebMD, Treehugger.com, Mercola.com, and Mattermore.com, who identify Eucalyptus citriodora as an effective alternative to DEET when applied properly.
Eucalyptus citriodora is a variety of Eucalyptus and part of the Myrtaceae or Myrtle family. Native to the Northeast part of Australia, the plant is a brilliant green with Lanceolate shaped leaves and can grow up to 60 ft. in length. Oil from the leaves gives off a powerful lemony verbena scent and has been associated with healing properties by many cultures. The plant material is steam distilled to extract the richly yellow colored essential oil. The Lemon Eucalyptus variety is not only wonderful for keeping away bugs and mosquitos, but can assist with respiratory challenges, sinus infections, and poor circulation. You can use it in the recipe below to make your own non-toxic bug repellant spray. Directions for Veriditas Botanical’s Mosquito/Bug Repellant Recipe: 60 drops Eucalyptus citriodora (repels insects) 40 drops Patchouli (repels insects & helps adhere to the skin for longer periods of time) 15 drops Lemongrass (repels insects) 15 drops Rose Geranium (repels ticks) 15 drops Lavender (protects & soothes the skin) 15 drops Peppermint (repels insects & cools the skin)
Mix the above blend into a 4 oz. spray bottle (preferably glass). Fill the bottle with water or with Lavender or Wild Sage hydrosol. Shake well before every application. This spray can be applied to skin, clothing, and hair and is safe for kids and pets. If you prefer a longer lasting application, use lotion as a carrier. Add 1012 drops of the essential oil blend for every ounce of unscented lotion and shake well to mix the essential oils thoroughly into the lotion base. The organic Essential oils, organic Hydrosols, and bottles for this recipe can be purchased or custom blended at Charmacy, which is located at 1220 S. College Ave in Fort Collins, CO. NOTE: Eucalyptus citriodora can be irritating if applied directly to the skin. Check with your medical professional before using if you are pregnant or sensitive. Nourishing, Non-Toxic Sunscreen MELISSA N. STEWART Did you know you can easily make 100% nourishing and non-toxic sunscreen at home this summer? Many plant oils provide SPF as high as 50 and are non-toxic. High-SPF products require high concentrations of sun-filtering chemicals and some of these ingredients may pose health risks when they penetrate the skin, where they have been linked to tissue damage and potential hormone disruption. Some may trigger allergic skin reactions.1 Experts point out that it’s an ironic situation that in order to protect our skin from cancer, we started using sunscreen, but studies are now finding that using sunscreen may lead to an increased risk of cancer. This is due to a variety of reasons, including the fact that many sunscreens only block UVB rays (which are the primary cause of sunburn and non-melanoma skin cancers), and not UVA (suppresses the immune system, cause harmful free radicals to form in skin, and is associated with higher risk of developing melanoma), creating a Vitamin D deficiency. Also, research is pointing to the fact that Vitamin A and its derivatives that are used in many sunscreens turn toxic when exposed to the sun.2 Because the many sunscreens being retailed today are known to be toxic to your health, the risks far outweigh the benefits. If you are concerned about going out to play on a sunny day without protection, you do not have to use the toxinheavy over-the-counter sunscreen. Making your own plant and oil-based sunscreen will offer you a natural and safe option. Below are many common oils that offer a natural and safe alternative of SPF protection without any harmful chemicals. These include: red raspberry seed oil (SPF 28-50); cold pressed carrot seed oil (SPF 38-40); wheat germ oil (SPF 20); hazelnut oil (SPF 15); macadamia and hemp seed oil (SPF 6); apricot oil (SPF 2-6); and jojoba, sesame, coconut oil, and shea butter (all SPF 4). All lip balms with these ingredients give you some level of natural sun protection and the following recipe allows you to enjoy the sun with an SPF 20. Ingredients: 1/ 2 ounce (~1/3 cup) dried St. John’s Wort* 1/2 cup Cold Pressed Hazelnut Oil 1/2 cup Cold Pressed Apricot Kernel Oil 2 TBSP Shea Butter 1 oz Beeswax 3/4 oz naturally derived Zinc Oxide

* Topically St. John’s Wort will protect from the sun. Internally it can make people more photosensitive. Directions: Place St. John’s Wort in a glass jar and cover it with the hazelnut and Apricot Kernel Oil. Cover securely with a lid. Put container in a pot with water and gently simmer mixture for about 2 hours. As the container cools, strain the herbs from the oil and discard the used herbs. Using a glass jar, gently reheat the oil with the shea butter and beeswax added, again in a water bath. When all oils and waxes have been melted together remove from heat and immediately whisk in the zinc oxide until thoroughly combined. Ways to be Green When You Clean SHELBY WEBB
If you’re reading this magazine, chances are you have tried one of the many ways to detoxify your body. While body detoxification is very important, it’s also important to take steps to detoxify our homes. Because the FDA does not test the safety of compounds and chemicals used in cleaning products and plastics in the United States, we only learn of a chemical’s danger after it has already become a problem and the damage has been done. To avoid the danger of toxic chemicals, use these green cleaning recipes to protect your health and that of your family.
Fortunately, many green cleaning recipes share ingredients, so these recipes are extremely inexpensive to make. To get started, you will need the following supplies: spray bottles (glass or aluminum, if possible), white vinegar, olive oil, baking soda, liquid castile soap, and your preference of essential oils.
Recipes: • Dusting solution (1 c. water, 1/4 c. vinegar, 2 tbsp. olive oil, 10 drops essential oil). Combine all ingredients, add a small amount to a dusting cloth and dust away!
• All-purpose cleaner (2 c. water, 1 tbsp. castile soap, 4 drops essential oil). Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and use on counters and sinks.
• Window cleaner (1/4 c. vinegar, 1/2 tsp. castile soap, 2 c. water). Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and wipe off with a cloth or newspaper.
• Toilet bowl cleaner (1/4 c. vinegar, 5 drops essential oil, 1/2 c. baking soda). Toss all ingredients into the bowl and wait for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing and flushing.
Happy Green Cleaning!

Once paint is dry, cut out rings with sizzix as shown. If you don’t have a sizzix, you can cut by hand, or use paper punches.
Use various jump rings to attach rings for earrings and bracelets as shown.
My friend gave me an old grocery cart, which I cleaned up, sealed and used for storing my jewelry! I am in love with these pieces! Super easy and cheap to make. You could also use the die cut coffee sleeve shapes in your mixed media art. If you are like me, you could use a way to organize and display your jewelry. Mark around the inner and outer edges of the rings. On the left is before marking, the two on the right have been marked around the edges. Here I used metal shelving from Habitat Restore and made a frame from reclaimed wood to display my earrings.

I love being outdoors and prefer to be outside whenever possible. In Minnesota, we take advantage of the good weather when it happens. With our long winters, we spend a good six months cooped up inside under a blanket and enjoying pots of soup, stew or hot dish (that’s what we call casserole) just to keep warm. By the time April, or even May in some cases, rolls around, we are stir crazy and ready to get out and breathe fresh air. With one of the best park systems in the country, there are plenty of places to go to be outside in the sun. We like to spend hours playing with our dog at the many enormous dog parks. There are parks with trails along the Mississippi River, numerous lakes to walk around and a plethora of local breweries and restaurants with beautiful patios. With all of these options, we are never bored. We even like to take a couple of camping trips each year to get away and see the beautiful landscapes of the Midwest. Even in a place with so many choices for being outdoors, I have to say that my favorite place is my own backyard. Before we bought our house, we were living in condominiums and apartments and we never had a private outdoor space to make our own. Now that we are homeowners, I have been able to fill my gardens with the vegetables and herbs I want to eat and the flowers and plants that bring me joy. When we are not out and about, I spend hours sitting in my back yard tending my garden, playing with my dog and spending time with the
people who mean the most to me. But all of this fun activity outdoors can drain one’s energy! I thought that a nice energy-packed Granola Bar would be a fun recipe for the summer. The best part about it is that you can substitute most of the ingredients to items you like the most.
Maple Honey Granola Bars 2 Cups Rolled Oats 1 ¼ Cups Rolled Wheat* ¾ Cup Wheat Germ 2 Cups roughly chopped Almonds** ½ Cup Honey 1 Cup Maple Syrup ½ Cup Dark Brown Sugar 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract ½ Cup (1 stick) Unsalted Butter 1 Cup Raisins** 1 Cup Dried Apricots**(chopped) ¼ Cup Chia Seeds ¼ Cup Flax Seeds ½ Cup Sunflower Seeds Preheat oven to 350 degrees. a Jelly Roll (sheet pan with sides) with butter and cut a piece of parchment paper to fit in the wide way with extra length hanging over the sides. Mix Rolled Oats, Rolled Wheat, Wheat Germ and Almonds on a separate sheet pan and toast in oven for 15 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. In a medium sauce pan over low heat mix Honey, Maple Syrup, Brown Sugar, Butter and Vanilla Extract until butter is melted and brown sugar is dissolved. In a large bowl mix the Apricots, Raisins, Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds and Sunflower seeds. Add roasted mixture directly from the oven. Pour honey, syrup and butter mixture over and mix until completely coated. Pour mixture into prepared Jelly Roll pan with Parchment Paper and with wet hands, press into an even layer. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for at least 3 hours and then remove from pan and cut into bars. *If you cannot find Rolled Wheat, replace with more Rolled Oats. **You can use any combination of nuts or dried fruits you like as long as the ratios are the same.

What the Fork are My Kids Eating STEFANIE SACKS, MS, CNS, CDN The other day my younger son came home from school with a green lollipop in his mouth. “Where did you get this?” I asked. “From our treasure box at school Mom,” he replied with a little too much sass for my liking. While I do let my kids dabble in the super bad junk every so often (candy, hot dogs, etc.), I don’t leave it to them to choose when, and especially not my 7-year old with health challenges. Despite the fact that I provided his teacher with ample supply of Hunter-safe junk, which apparently ran out, and my child is very clear on what he can and can’t have, he always pushes the limit. But he’s a kid and that’s what he’s supposed to do. So as the parent, I am frequently coming up with new ways to communicate with him about food and give him the tools to want to make better choices. This is what I have realized over the years whether from teaching grown-ups, kids or my own experiences with motherhood—with an edible education, realism, a strategy and patience you can easily impart what you know to your kids. But be sure to talk with them, versus at them, and make them stewards of your family's sustenance. Thus, constant exposure to healthy food and conversation about food is critical. Before suggesting some tested get-onboard strategies, I would like to establish a few ground rules: 1. Never presume your child, partner or spouse won’t like something. I bet you are already thinking that you won’t buy this or that because you know that they won’t like it. If you have an open mind, it’s likely that they will too. 2. Make a rule that everyone has to try something once. 3. Never quit on introducing new foods. If your kid, or resident grown-up, doesn’t like the new Better-for-You version of those
chocolate sandwich cookies, keep reintroducing. For fresh food like broccoli, relentlessly reintroduce at two-week intervals, but think about how you are preparing it. Perhaps you should sauté it with some olive oil, even add a little butter, rather than steam it. 4. When your child does not like a food, talk to them about why they don’t like it. Explain to them why it is healthy. For example, “Spinach can give you muscles like your favorite professional athlete hero…” 5. Never forget that it is your job as a caregiver to provide your children with a variety of healthy foods, and it is their job to choose what to eat within that context. If they skip a meal, they won’t starve. 6. Don’t push food on your kids, as in “you must eat everything on your plate”, because children need to learn how to self-regulate. Beyond this, fun activities such as the Supermarket Scavenger Hunt, The Taste-Testing Experiment, The
Arts and Crafts Kitchen, The Chopped Competition and Say It On Social Media have worked wonders for us. The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer JOEL SALATIN Excerpt from The Sheer Ecstasy Of Being A Lunatic Farmer (Joel Salatin, 2010) by Joel Salatin, a full-time farmer in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Joel holds a BA degree in English and wrote Holy Cows & Hog Heaven, Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal, and other well-regarded books about farming. The family’s farm, Polyface Inc. (“The Farm of Many Faces”) has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, Gourmet and countless other radio, television and print media.
Every day I make thousands of beings happy. What a distinct privilege. Few people and few vocations present such an ecstatic opportunity. I love moving chickens, cows, and pigs because I know how happy it makes them. One of my favorite chores is moving chicken shelters, both broilers and the egg mobiles. The unbridled delight these animals express through their demeanor and antics when offered a fresh salad bar is both obvious and palpable. You can feel the happiness in the flock. The chickens can hardly dance fast enough. First an earthworm, then a cloverleaf. Oh, there is a cow pie, perfectly aged, with ten fat fly larvae waiting to be eaten. But on the way, a grasshopper jumps into view. Must get him how. Fly larvae can wait a few minutes. And a cricket on the way, suddenly still and quiet, hoping the little red hen won’t notice. But she does, and she nabs the cricket on the way to the grasshopper and then scratches through the cow pie, pecking out the fly larvae as fast as she can find them. Every afternoon, when I move the cow herd into their new salad bar paddock, the contented chewing, grass ripping, and cavorting of the calves epitomizes blissful joy. Earthworms wait expectantly for the cow dung and the newly released root organic matter from self-pruned plants. Every day the seen and unseen life on the farm responds gratefully and exuberantly to my care. What sheer ecstasy to be able to make this many beings happy. Unfortunately, our Greco-Roman western linear reductionist systematized fragmented disconnected partsoriented individualized culture does not make these critters happy. And it considers anyone who reaches for such a goal to be a lunatic. We’re supposed to be interested in growing it faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper. Nothing else matters. And all these beings are just inanimate piles of
50 Regenerate • July/August 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com
protoplasmic structure to be manipulated however cleverly hubris can imagine to manipulate them. Yes, that’s the American way. Truly patriotic. Amazingly, the farms that dump on chemicals, dope their animals, confine their animals in factory farms without fresh air, sunshine, and salad bar are considered normal and I’m the lunatic. As the industrial food system grows, I realize more and more how different my paradigm is, on many levels. We are not simply a preference apart. We are not just different nuances of the same thing. We are on different planets. In fact, we are on a collision course. We are at war. Folks, the worldview of the locally-based, communityimbedded, environmentally-enhancive, nutrient-dense farmer is as different a worldview of globalist, megacorporate, industrialized food elitists as East is from West. As Native Americans to Europeans. As libertarians from liberals. As Beauchamp from Pasteur. As Incas from Conquistadors. As righteousness from evil. My goal with this book is to encourage the righteous side and have fun doing it. Let’s embrace being lunatics. Most great prophets were considered lunatics in their day. His contemporaries thought Jesus was the devil. Our side can either respond with hand wringing and despondency, or we can have fun enjoying our answers. Our truth. We can enjoy the sheer ecstasy of being lunatic farmers, either by proxy or for real. Welcome aboard. PUBLISHER’S NOTE: And here’s some awesome sauce. I will be interviewing Joel Salatin on Gen R Radio on August 16th! If you’d like to be reminded, go to regeneratemagazine.com and sign up for our newsletter. You don’t want to miss an interview with a lunatic!

What’s in it for Your Clients? ANNETTE KAHMANN, MA, MA
Leveling Up
Express Your Business:
You have great services to offer. You know that they work and how people can benefit from them. You want to let the world know about what you have to offer and how you can help. But are you delivering this message in a way that your potential customers can relate to? Just like a package you send out, the business information you share has both content and a container; both are equally important to ensure that your message is received. For starters, let us focus on the content. To make sure your content is assimilated, consider the following points to reach all of your future clients. • What’s in it for me? Ultimately, this is the underlying question all of your current and potential clients pursue. Regardless of how praiseworthy your products or services may be, your prospective clients won’t bite into them unless they can find personal benefits in them. • What motivates your clients? People are either trying to escape some misery, or chasing an ideal; they want to “run away from” physical or emotional discomfort, or “run towards” something that adds value to their lives. Tailor your message to encompass both. For example, people see a dentist either to avoid pain, or to improve the look and performance of their teeth. A dentist advertising only cosmetic dentistry loses many potential patients. • Emotional or mental, objective or subjective? Objective evidence is based on results verified in experiments or facts such as numbers. Subjective evidence reflects personal experiences. To reach both mental and emotional personality types when considering what your business offers, include both types of evidence. In case of doubt, some extra factual information can tip the scales in favor of your business for the emotional type, and vice versa. • Focus on results, not on the ‘how’. Let’s face it, if you are in pain, you really aren’t interested in how a procedure or medication is going to remove your agony, your only interest is the outcome. Don’t overwhelm potential clients with meaningless details of procedures or specifications, but keep them focused on the benefits. This also keeps them from overanalyzing your offer. • Use imagery and analogies that fit your audience.
Descriptive images and catchy analogies are often the easiest way to explain your service or product benefits. Have a variety of images and analogies for different persons, based on occupations, interests, personality and motivational types. • What’s your target market? A target market or niche can be determined by your range of experience, your interests and your connections. Obviously, your ideal niche is where all three factors intersect; however, consider any of these factors a good starting point, and don’t limit your clients to these three sections • Meet your clients where they are. Don’t assume that your clients have the same level of knowledge as you do in your field; don’t treat them as if they should. This can happen especially in the areas of health and selfimprovement. Remember that they wouldn’t need you if they already had your insights; make sure you don’t talk down to them. Ask them about their level of prior familiarity instead. • Step into their shoes. Even if you are quite a ways ahead of your prospective clients in terms of knowledge or development, step back in time and slip into their shoes. Make it a habit to focus on your client’s experience, rather than trying to impress your own expectations upon them. Remember that ultimately every business is a people business, regardless of what you do or sell. All business transactions involve at least one other person, so create a great rapport by delivering your message in a way that your counterpart can relate to, in a courteous and respectful way. Annette Kahmann helps her clients present and deliver their business message in a meaningful and impactful way. Drawing on her diverse background, she combines the best in left brain and right brain accomplishments: academic training and intuitive insight, creativity and attention to detail. My Top 10 Principles for Being a Powerful Coach JOHN P. MORGAN The common thread of my otherwise diverse careers and interests in physics, finance, computers, business and personal growth has always been power. Power is important in coaching because power drives creation. The more power there is in your coaching, the more impact you will have and the more money you will make. Following is the first of my top 10 principles on being a powerful coach. These may not be the paths to power for you, but they are what have helped me to impact the lives of inspiring leaders around the world and to make enough money to provide the life my wife and I once dreamed of. Principle #1 – TRUTH What I focus on more than anything in my coaching is something I learned from my parents as a young boy. In fact, at our house, it was the MOST important thing. That is, to tell the truth. When someone in a courtroom is called to the witness stand, there is a short ritual where they recite the phrase: “I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God.“ These words actually contain four distinct pieces of wisdom for powerful coaching. 1. ‘Tell the truth.’ — I do my best to always speak what is in my gut, heart and mind. My truth shows up as a sense of curiosity, dissonance, harmony, certainty, uncertainty and other feelings. Whatever it is, I share it. I share what I see, hear and feel. I do my best not to hold back out of fear that I might be wrong. I no longer keep secrets because I’m worried I might hurt someone’s feelings. I don’t hide anything my body is pointing me to because my head thinks it might not be relevant. 2. ‘Tell the whole truth.’ — Besides telling a truth of mine that may challenge a person, I try to remember also to share the full context
surrounding that truth. A context I used to leave out was the reason WHY I was challenging the person. Reason’s like ‘because I believe in your potential’ or ‘because I love you’, were true but I didn’t always tell it. Often I assumed the fact that I was their coach was enough 3. ‘Tell nothing but the truth.’ — Through listening back in my mind to what I have spoken to people, I have learned not to include anything extraneous when I tell the truth. No
longer do I pad my truth out of fear. Instead I just do my best to be direct with people. 4. ‘So help me God.’ — For me, ‘God’ is the unfolding of life in and through all things. In this sense, I relate to my deepest truths — the ones that I contact not through reason but through body and intuition — as the current of life unfolding through me. To NOT speak these truths then is
54 Regenerate • July/August 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com
thus taking an active role in obstructing the unfolding of creation. To be helped by ‘God’ in telling the truth is a reminder to me that my deepest truths are actually not mine, but they are life’s unfolding. I challenge you to go forth and tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and see how your coaching practice changes. J.P. Morgan is a successful coach and his vision is a more connected and loving world. He creates this by challenging leaders to discover a whole worldview and to embody a radically deep personal integrity. J.P. has supported numerous leaders to grow their organization by growing themselves and he has been invited to share his ideas on human connection on the TEDx stage and about creating a borderless world at a private event attended by billionaires. Learn more at http://jpmorganjr.com/. PUBLISHER’S NOTE: We will include more of JP Morgan’s top ten principles in upcoming issues of Regenerate. If you would like to hear JP discuss the approach he used to build a successful coaching business, then you are in luck! He was my guest on the 5/31/16 Gen R Wholistic Radio show. You can tune into the podcast at gr.voiceamerica.com.
