Publisher’s Note SANDRA G. MALHOTRA, PhD
The popular lexicon around cancer is a concern to me as we often hear about the “battle”, “fight” or “war”. This issue is an invitation to think about a cancer diagnosis differently — not as a battle to be won so that life can return to “normal.” Rather, as a call to an inner journey to be travelled, just like other serious challenges that provide us the opportunity for deep introspection and growth. A chance to establish a new and better normal. Why? Because the cancer is not some external enemy that must be hated and vanquished. When it is treated that way, is it any wonder that it often wins? Nothing positive or life-affirming results from hateful energy. The cancer is part of who we are when it presents itself — like our heart and lungs — and it is there to teach us valuable lessons. They are more than likely lessons that presented themselves in a more benign way and were ignored for decades. These could include: • Loving your body and removing toxins from your diet, body care products and environment • Really confronting and clearing all of the toxic, angry emotions that have been repressed and stored in the body • Ending toxic relationships • Delving into your soul’s purpose and evolution Is this a bunch of woo-woo jargon? Hardly — that’s not how girlfriend rolls. As a result of my research and personal experience, the people who have the best chance of surviving and thriving after a cancer diagnosis view it in this way. They embrace it, love it and do the icky dirty work of cleaning themselves up physically, mentally and emotionally. This isn’t victim shaming. This is about knowing better and doing better. Those who view it as a battle with some external force and don’t do the unpleasant introspective work
may just get it again because the root causes have not been addressed. The lessons have not been learned. Change and growth have not occurred. Kris Carr, wellness activist and cancer survivor, documented her journey in the documentary Crazy Sexy Cancer and considers herself a cancer thriver. She described how she did not love her body prior to her diagnosis and treated it like a garbage dump. Her cancer provided an opportunity for a serious course correction and she is now thriving. Lessons learned? Check. Serious personal growth? Check. None of us get out of this life unscathed because we are here to learn and evolve, which is messy business. For some, it’s a cancer diagnosis. For others, it may be an accident, addiction, death of loved ones, serious financial loss, etc. These are all opportunities and can be taken as such, or not. We have been gifted with free will and can choose to love and grow, or not. I hope you enjoy the articles in this issue that present an empowering viewpoint about cancer. It is not our goal to recommend a course of treatment because that is not our place. Choosing the traditional western approach, a more holistic one or a combination of both is a very personal decision. However, we do recommend that any course of treatment that is chosen be done so with loving kindness, mindfulness, positivity and a willingness to do the hard work that will result in personal growth.

Do You Expect to Get Cancer? JUDITH ALBRIGHT How many times have you said, or heard someone say, “Cancer runs in my family so I’m likely to get it too.” This means that because of your family history, you are expecting to have cancer at some point in your life. Yet there are numerous people who have contracted cancer without any family history of it at all, so there has to be more to it than that. Nonetheless, the idea of genetic predisposition is promoted and reinforced by medical professionals who spout statistics and predictions about who is doomed to be next. This is particularly true of breast cancer. The result is an extreme fear that, even without any sign of cancer, women are driven to take dramatic action, such as having their breasts proactively removed. Case in point is celebrity Angelina Jolie who wrote an article entitled, “My Medical Choice” in which she explained why she chose to have both healthy breasts removed. She explained that she has a BRCA1 gene mutation that is known to raise a woman’s risk of breast and ovarian cancers. She acted on the basis of this risk and her expectation. Regrettably, women who only have cancer in one breast are also making the decision to have their other healthy breast removed because of their belief that the cancer might spread to it. Double mastectomies, known as a “contra lateral prophylactic mastectomy” or CPM, have proven to be more fear-based than anything. Research shows that CPM does basically nothing to increase a woman’s chances of survival. Yet, in spite of its lack of any solid scientific proof, the CPM procedure continues to grow in popularity. A study recently published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine suggests this trend can be laid at the feet of the cancer industry. Researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston found that many women simply have a false understanding of what CPM can do for them, likely a direct result of cancer professionals overstating the alleged benefits and understating the many risks involved.
There is also a misunderstanding about genetic testing and the reliability of the results. A recent headline on Medicinenet.com read: “Misunderstood Gene Tests May Lead to Unnecessary Mastectomies.” This came from a new survey published online on April 12 of this year in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. It revealed that nearly half of breast cancer patients who chose to have a double mastectomy after genetic testing didn’t actually have the gene mutations known to raise the risk of additional cancers. Why is this? Apparently, it is happening because many women and their doctors are incorrectly interpreting the results of genetic testing. Robert Smith, vice president of cancer screening for the American Cancer Society, explains: “Although genetic testing is becoming increasingly important in cancer treatment, these results show that genetics experts have not been properly integrated into standard cancer-care teams.” While genetic testing and cancer statistics cannot be ignored or dismissed out of hand, they are but a part of a much larger and complicated picture. Statistics are only a graphing of averages, which means a certain percentage falls above and a certain percentage falls below. One size does not fit all and what applies to one person may not apply to the next. We are all individuals whose lives are shaped by what we think, believe and do. And we cannot dismiss the mind/body connection and the role our beliefs and negative emotions play in the cancer equation. If we are to believe cell biologist Bruce Lipton, PhD (author of The Biology of Belief), what we think and believe about our

bodies and overall health can play a significant role in preventing major diseases such as cancer. In 1982, Dr. Lipton began to study the principles of quantum physics and how they might increase his understanding of the cell’s information processing systems. From 1987 to 1992, his research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine revealed that, contrary to accepted belief, the environment controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, not the genes, which could be turned off. This hypothesis flew in the face of the accepted scientific viewpoint that we are at the mercy of our genes. As a result, Bruce has been viciously attacked by the medical profession who considers his theory that we can use our minds to “turn off genetic markers” as quackery. Yet his pioneering work has opened the door a crack to shed more light on the power of the mind and the link between emotions, beliefs and genetics. But Dr. Lipton is not alone in his theories. Among others, another well known supporter is Dawson Church, PhD, author of The Genie in Your Genes and founder of the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare. He is a health writer and researcher who has authored a number of books in the fields of health, psychology and spirituality. I have met Dr. Lipton, participated in a project with Dr. Church, read both of their books, and believe in them and their work. Why? Because the mind/body connection is well documented and through my professional practice, I have had firsthand experience of the power of it for many years. My own beliefs were challenged during an experience with my mother’s oncologist. While he did not encourage me to have a mastectomy, he tried to persuade (bully) me into taking Tamoxifin for at least five years as a preventative. Even though I had no signs of breast cancer, because of my family history he was adamant that I take this toxic drug because statistics indicated I was in the 95th percentile for risk. I politely
informed him that regardless of statistics or his opinion, I fell into the 5th percentile. (Whoa, he didn’t like that!) He indignantly told me I was flat out crazy and, without following his sage advice, I was committing suicide. It hasn’t happened yet, but I am neither naive nor stupid. Being fully aware of the cancer in my family history, I chose to concentrate on the mental work that would help me remain healthy and prevent cancer from becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. If I ever am unfortunate enough to have cancer, at least it won’t be because I expected to have it and simply sat and waited for lightning to strike. My point in reporting all this is to urge you to be your own health care advocate. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, become an informed patient. Read everything you can and explore your options. Before you agree to drastic treatments, seek another opinion. Doctors are not always right, and may or may not be up to date with the latest cancer research and treatment. Above all, don’t let fear cloud your judgment and make the decision for you. If cancer has not yet appeared in your life and you are healthy, do the mental work that will help you stay that way. Read Dr. Lipton’s and Dr. Dawson’s books and decide for yourself if you think they are onto something. Find a PSYCH-K or EFT practitioner who can help you explore and change negative subconscious beliefs about getting cancer. Set an intention to remain healthy, guard your thoughts, and be careful about what you expect—you might get it.

Introducing the Institute of Hypnotherapy MATTHEW BROWNSTEIN, CIHT The career of a certified hypnotherapist is a constant act of forgiveness. We practice forgiveness within ourselves and we teach it to all of our clients. Aside from helping ourselves and others to reach their goals with hypnosis, we can understand the deeper principle of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy by understanding the very important role that forgiveness plays in our work. We teach forgiveness because that is what we most need to learn. We might think that hypnosis training is all about inductions, deepening and programming. Yet the real work is a process of transformation, not just a mere fixing of symptoms. To get to the underlying root of our problems, we must know what to do when the core issues within the subconscious mind are brought to consciousness. Once we discover that our deepseated troubles are rooted in unforgiven relationships, we come to learn that all effective transformational work must be rooted in true forgiveness. When we learn hypnosis in the model of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, we learn to let go of the limited way we see things as we embrace a much healthier and saner worldview. By letting go of our egoic way of seeing the world, we can, through forgiveness, embrace a way of seeing that fosters love, healing, kindness and inner peace. True forgiveness is a joyful releasing of perceptions that no longer serve us. It is a shift that occurs within the mind that has a powerful effect upon the body, mind
and emotions. When such shifts occur, the ripple effect in our lives and the lives of others is significant and we are never the same. Through forgiveness we realize that everything we want is available to us, as the miracle that returns us to truth does indeed set us free. With locations all over the country, the Institute is pleased to be announcing to the Colorado holistic health community the opening of our new Boulder location with classes beginning in September 2017 and January 2018. Matthew Brownstein is the CEO of Anahat Education Group, the Executive Director of the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy and the President of the International Association of Interpersonal Hypnotherapists. He is an author, lecturer and leader in the field of hypnotherapy and hypnotherapy training. Learn more at www.InstituteofHypnotherapy.com or call 800-551-9247.

Cancer is Not a Death Sentence TONI CINA I’m a cancer survivor after no chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Here’s my story. In July 2012, I was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia (myelofibrosis). Since my blood was not making red blood cells, I began getting blood transfusions every other week. Traditional medicine had very little to offer other than experimental drugs or a bone marrow transplant that carried a 5% chance of success. For several years I had been eating healthy — mainly organic — so it made sense to continue on a natural path because the body is designed to heal itself if we allow it. After a six-month remission, it came back in June 2013. I was short of breath frequently, tired and my platelets were dropping. I also had some joint pain which was very troublesome because I had always enjoyed physical labor and I could no longer do it. The doctors felt it would continue to progress until my body gave up, which was not acceptable. I had a great life and no interest in experiencing a steady decline. I therefore decided to overcome this health challenge on my own terms. In January 2014, I began an intense detox/rebuild program. My diet was organic and mainly fruits and vegetables, often made into soup or juices. I also added oatmeal and plain yogurt for protein. Other than the yogurt, I ate no dairy, sugar, meat or bread products. This was an adjustment and I think I missed cheese the most! There were several supplements I took to support my liver and help rebuild my immune system. I also did coffee enemas, clay packs and castor oil packs. I used only distilled water. After 2 years on that regimen, I was 50 pounds thinner and much healthier but still needed blood every week. Next, I moved to a lower elevation and warmer climate. I began working with a microbiologist in March 2016 and his philosophy was to treat the cell

mitochondria with diet and supplements. He believed that cancer thrives on sugar and cannot live in an alkaline body. Three months later my blood tests were normal and I have been cancer free for over a year. As a result of this experience, I know that what is referred to as “incurable” cancer can be cured. This has been a strenuous journey but I would not change a thing. Along with an improved diet and proper supplements there were many other things that I believe contributed to my healing. I had a great support team that consisted of family, friends and helpers to prepare food, wash dishes and provide encouragement. I had a group of girlfriends who threw parties at my house where we sang and carried on. My support team helped me stay positive and grateful. And I still had my hair! My family was a strong reason to survive. I prayed and so did many others — even people I did not know. I meditated and got my mind straight — no more being resentful or critical. I took responsibility for, and control of, my health and followed my intuition. It’s no one else’s job to rescue you and no one knows your body like you do. Recent studies of survivors show that most of us did all of these things in some fashion. I made it. So can you. Toni Cina is a 71-year old Regenerate Magazine reader living in Florida near family though she also has extended family in Colorado. She works part-time, goes to the gym 3 times a week and is always ready to talk about curing cancer naturally. You can find her on Facebook.

A Body-Mind-Spirit Approach to Cancer LINDA KING, C.HT., FEP, REIKI MASTER/TEACHER, LUXMANI PRACTITIONER Dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be a frightening experience. But what if we consider the cancer journey from a different perspective, such as the lessons we are supposed to learn from the experience. Might it be less frightening and even an important part of our soul’s evolution?
When a person gets cancer, it may be helpful to understand why he or she got it in the first place. I’ve always admired the work of Louise Hay and appreciate her wisdom. For over 40 years, Louise has written over 65 books teaching us how mental, physical and emotional wellbeing are influenced by our thoughts and experiences and vice versa. She believes that resentment, criticism, guilt and fear cause more problems and disease than anything else. With regards to cancer, she feels that deep hurt, longstanding resentment, hatred, apathy, deep secrets or grief can eat away at the body and cause cancer. In Louise’s book, “You Can Heal Your Life”, she has broken down underlying causes of various conditions, problems, illnesses and dis-eases and suggests new thought patterns and positive affirmations. For specific types of cancer, one must look at the organ or body part affected by the cancer. For example, if a woman has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it may indicate that she has refused to nourish herself by always putting everyone else first. It may also indicate over mothering, over protecting and perhaps even overbearing attitudes. There might
have been some deep hurt, grief, blame or resentment regarding those issues as well. For pancreatic cancer, there may be some rejection, anger and frustration due to losing a “sweetness” for life. Liver cancer may indicate serious issues with deep seated anger and primitive emotions. Colon cancer generally has to do with fear of letting go of past issues or choosing to hold on to the past. I have personally known persons having cancer in one of the female organs, such as in the vagina, ovaries or uterus, and often these women were victims of sexual abuse sometime in their lives. Louise herself had cancer in vaginal area and had been raped at the age of five. I have a brother and a cousin who were both diagnosed with cancer about 20 years ago, within a year of each other. Both had lost their wives, one suddenly and one from breast cancer over the course of about a year. Both were being “blamed” by their wives’ families for the deaths, even though neither was at fault. My brother’s oncologist at Stanford University Medical Center told him he likely developed the cancer because of being blamed in addition feeling grief from her death.

Western Medicine vs. Wholistic Healing In Western Medicine, most doctors and practitioners look at treating cancer with the removal of the tumor, chemotherapy and/or radiation. Fortunately, there are additional options. With Wholistic Healing, it’s important to bring everything in your life into balance to create a healing environment within yourself. Look at all parts of yourself, the mind, body, emotions and spirit, before you begin the healing process. Eliminating toxins from the body may be instrumental in beginning the healing process. Changing your diet, perhaps trying Max Gerson’s protocol for treating cancer or incorporating herbs, wheatgrass juice or Essiac would be right for you. Eliminating stress or destructive relationships may be your ticket to health. Perhaps you might think about changing frequencies to kill the cancer. There are so many different modalities out there in the world: tuning fork therapy, reiki, singing bowls, chants, color therapy, flower remedies, aromatherapy, crystal and gemstone healing.
Still others may turn to faith to aid in their healing. I know many people who have turned to God, prayer lists or even made a spiritual journey to Brazil to visit John of God. Visualizations and guided imagery have worked for many persons over the years. By visualizing a tumor shrinking or melting away by a beam of light or an ocean’s wave have been proven to work.
Connecting Science and Spirituality Everything is connected in our world, right? Our body, mind, emotions, thoughts, spirit and even our etheric body, where our memories and dreams live. They all connected with each other, the rest of the world and even the universe. All must be in balance for healing to occur. Shamans around the world have been working with people afflicted with cancer by helping them change their way of thinking about their body and their relationship to the universe and themselves. It is ancient knowledge that we are connected to everything in the universe. It is important that we live in balance and harmony with our bodies and our environment. Gregg Braden is an international teacher, author and lecturer who has done considerable research into how to bridge science, spirituality and the “real world” together. He has several lectures where he explains how people can be cured of cancers within a few minutes by changing thoughts, feelings, frequencies or beliefs. In some cases, medical practitioners work together chanting and sharing emotions to shrink and dissolve cancerous tumors. This is not just wishful thinking as this technology actually exists and has been proven in many different countries and various settings.
Things to Keep in Mind Love Yourself Learn to love and accept yourself unconditionally.
Keep an open mind Consider the fact there are no accidents or flukes when you get cancer or are diagnosed with any illness. There are lessons to be learned from having these conditions (e.g. trust, love, forgiveness, patience, gratitude, caring for others, faith, or generosity). Many people look back on their experiences with cancer as a blessing in disguise. Perhaps a major career change is long overdue or making a move to be closer to family members. Priorities may change - money or material things may no longer be important. Don’t “Own” the Cancer Watch the language you use. When you say things like, “I have stage 4 prostate cancer”, it sounds like the cancer belongs to you. It might be compared to throwing in
use affirmations such as, “I lovingly forgive and release all of the past” or “ I forgive anyone involved.” Getting in Touch with Your Inner Healer Know that we all have inner guidance that resides within us. That “Inner Healer” always has our best interest at heart and knows what we should do to heal. If your intuition guides you to work with an energy or wholistic healer, then listen to it because your cancer journey could feel overwhelming and their guidance and support could be crucial. Whether or Not You Get Cancer.... It is important to get rid of the anger, guilt, resentments, mistrust and negative thoughts. If you haven’t talked to a family member or friend for many years, it may be time to
With Wholistic Healing, it’s important to bring everything in your life into balance to create a healing environment within yourself. the towel and resigning to the fact that it’s going to eventually kill you. “I am working through some health issues” is better than saying you have cancer. Use Positive Affirmations These may include “I am in the process of becoming Happy, Healthy and Whole again”, “I choose to fill my world with joy”, “I love and approve of myself” or “Each and every day, my body is healing.” Forgive Know that you can do forgiveness therapy even if the person has passed on or you are not in touch with them. This is not about letting anyone “off the hook”. Forgiveness works with releasing any grudges, sadness or resentments that you have been holding on to in your heart. Again,
work on this relationship. Forgive and forget. Learn to truly love and accept yourself and others. Allow the love to flow - in, through and outside of yourself. Allow the love to release and heal old hurts or any patterns that are not serving your highest good. The Slow Food & Slow Money Movement What Do They Have in Common? DANA STOVERN My clients frequently exclaim, “Money isn’t real to me. How do I make money real?” Given the ephemeral nature of our digitally driven economy, money “realness” is important. With the flick of a wrist, we sling plastic cards through digital machines that move our money with the ease of air. It’s no wonder we’re experiencing difficulty in our connection with money. What do I tell my people when they are frustrated with “the realness” of money? I visit with them about how fast they eat. What does the pace of food consumption have in common with money “realness”? A lot, it turns out. Money and food closely relate. Money relationship sits in the second chakra of sex, partnership and co-creation. Food relationship sits just above in the third chakra, the sun center of personal power. It’s not an accident that great food, money and sex intermingle naturally. More than once I’ve heard my clients refer to money in food descriptors. “Money is a feast and famine relationship for me.” Or “How delicious it is to have ample money.” Or “I feel so nauseous with this sour money deal.” Lately, I’ve been coining a popular food phrase to help make money real for my coaching clients. It works like this... You're heard of the Slow Food movement? This is a healthy food movement designed to slow people down and allow them relate with their food again. For example, by cooking meals, growing vegetables, eating together and talking with each other about the day's events. The Slow Food Movement is about slowing down and savoring our food in healthy ways. Digesting our food.
Communing with food. Relating with food. Guess what? There is something similar with money relationship. I call it the Slow Money Movement. It’s about slowing down with your money to help make money real for you. It works like this: When you engage in a money transaction, consciously slow down, breathe, feel yourself in the center of your body and notice how your body is responding to the transaction. Consciously connect. In slowing down with money, my clients find themselves savoring sacred money transactions. Experiencing the delicious honor of a money agreement in high vibration. Noticing the nuances of flavor of a money exchange gone right. When this slower money digestion and integration happens, a key money phenomenon occurs – authentic money choices appear more clearly for you, making money real again. Dana Stover is a money medium, founder of The Magic of Somatic Money and an emerging voice in the conscious money field. She delivers inspired Money Magic messages, encouraging her audiences and clients to explore authentic money relationships with unique money tools for deeper personal value and power. Stovern’s spiritually conscious money focus arrived in 2011 after a near-death experience and the tragic loss of her son during pregnancy. Her unraveled life triggered a “spiritual financial intervention” delivering insights, experiences and tools she now provides for audiences and clients. Learn more at www.somaticmoney.com

These are the food rules that’ll determine exactly what you eat (and don’t eat) in your next meal. Food rules such as: • My calories should be (insert number) for the day if I want to lose weight and keep it off. • CARB is a four-letter word. Don’t eat too many… period. The most common food rule I see running, and ruining, people’s waistlines and health is:
Sugar is evil. I should always avoid it if I want to be thin and healthy. This is the most detrimental food LAW for folks trying to permanently lose weight, regulate blood sugar and stay healthy. This dietary belief has you thinking if you can be a super good girl/guy and conquer the sugar monster by never eating it, you will be inducted into the skinny and healthy club forever. Notice the absolute-ness about this belief. I should always avoid sugar if I want … Choosing to subscribe to this food rule determines most of your daily food decisions. This means you spend emotional energy, time and money resisting it. It’s a stressful and sometimes emotional pursuit, especially when you live in the modern world and you’re not living in the jungle foraging for your own berries. But what happens when you fail to follow your “sugar is bad so don’t ever eat it” food law, and you eat it anyway!? If you’re like most folks, you head into a nasty cycle of guilt and shame, followed by punishing behaviors to “correct” your bad behavior by starving yourself the next day, wildly over-exercising or even purging.
This is being in a food war, the exact situation you’re masterfully guided to get out of in the End Your Food War online program. (https://www.CynthiaStadd.com/endyourfoodwar)

It’s indisputable that eating too much refined sugar causes hormonal imbalances, weight gain and other health-wrecking issues. However, should you make “sugar is bad” under all circumstances an indisputable nutritional truth? Should it be your food LAW? Your body survives on glucose. You need it to fuel the things you think and do every day, so you’re biologically programmed to crave it! In the context of an overall healthy diet, allowing yourself some sugar should be considered, and dare I say welcomed, with pleasure. If you choose to keep this as your food law, you may continue to find yourself in a stressful cycle of eating behaviors that are wreaking way more havoc on your waistline and health than eating some sugar. I am referring to eating behaviors like

Modalities for the Journey: Massage ELEANOR LE FEVRE Cancer is a word that instills fear into the hearts of many of us. It used to seem like such a foreign disease but it is becoming more and more prevalent in our lives. We all now know at least one person who has been affected by this terrible disease. Yet we still struggle with the best course of treatment and how to help sufferers get relief and find some light in their daily life. Massage therapy, while it may seem like a luxury, can be an integral part of a cancer patient’s health and well-being. Human touch is said to be a key part of our overall happiness and physical, mental and emotional wellness. When someone is suffering from a disease that may threaten their life, people surrounding them can often pull away and not offer physical touch as they are afraid of hurting or losing their loved one. Massage therapy is gaining more and more recognition in the medical community and is now being utilized in hospitals and doctor’s offices across the US to ease cancer patients’ suffering and promote relaxation and regeneration. There are even programs where family members are being taught basic massage techniques to administer to their loved ones to help them feel comforted and safe during chemotherapy treatments. There are many different therapeutic techniques that massage therapists use daily to promote healing and wellness, but which are the right ones for cancer patients? Deep tissue and rehabilitative work may not be the best route when going through cancer treatments. This is the time for your massage therapist to take it easy on the tissues due to
inflammation, swelling, tenderness or lack of tonicity brought on by treatments. Relaxation and overall wellness needs to be emphasized at this time. Patients need to feel safe, cared for and relaxed during their massages and know that they are in a place that supports wellness and that their practitioner truly cares about their health. When seeking care from a licensed massage therapist during cancer treatment, clients need to ask for what they want and receive feedback from the therapist to make sure they are receiving the care that they desire and that any special considerations are addressed. Clients should feel comfortable enough with their therapist to ask them to lighten their massage strokes, move on to a less tender area and even wear gloves if they feel that their immune system needs that much more protection and care. It is important to address any concerns with the massage therapist before and during the session to ensure that they are properly prepared to handle any issues and or special considerations when working with a cancer patient. It is imperative that good communication exists between client and therapist and that the therapist can refer the client to another practitioner if he or she

does not feel comfortable taking on the client. As the client, healing and trust are the key part of any massage therapy session. If there are any concerns or questions the client should feel comfortable addressing these with their therapist. Sometimes treatments for cancer patients can be more aggressive than the cancer itself - but massage therapy should not be one of them. Eleanor is a recent grad from the Healing Arts Institute and has had an interest in therapeutic massage since high school. Her work at a chiropractic office helped her realize the deep benefits of bodywork and she decided to pursue a career that helped people reach their body’s true potential. Her previous athletic injuries showed her how crucial receiving regular massage is! Eleanor enjoys corrective therapies and helping clients achieve their health goals. She is planning on becoming certified in Trauma Touch and plans on catering to Veterans and athletes. At Under Pressure Therapeutics, we love to support our clients on their journey to wellness. Modalities for the Journey: Acupuncture STERLING DAVIS “Blow kisses,” a mom encouraged her eight-year-old daughter as they greeted us upon entering her hospital room. The young girl had been suffering from a brain tumor. Despite her struggle, she had the strength to welcome us with a beautiful smile and wonderful air kisses. She knew that upon seeing us she would soon receive some respite from the pain and nausea she was experiencing due to chemotherapy treatments. The needles would stay in for about twenty minutes while she rested and then we would return to see her again in a week. I spent an entire year as an intern during my senior rotation on the hematology and oncology ward at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. We worked primarily with children who dealt with chronic pain. The patients were recommended to us for a variety of reasons, such as pain from accidents, congenital disorders or as a result of chemotherapy. The two key symptoms that are important to remember here are pain and nausea. These two sideeffects from cancer treatments are extremely common and acupuncture can be helpful for both. At the beginning of each appointment, the acupuncturist will examine the strength and constitution of the patient by assessing tongue and pulse. An acupuncturist will then choose points depending on the location of the pain, the accessibility of the point and comfort of the patient. (1) A recent study published on the Healthcare Medicine Institute website shows 90% efficacy in decreasing neuropathy caused by chemo toxin when given a Chinese herbal formula combined with acupuncture. Secondly, chemotherapy may cause damage to the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract causing diarrhea or nausea. There are several acupuncture points to help aid in proper digestion. These points are used to soothe and strengthen the stomach and intestines. One way of explaining why acupuncture works is that acupuncture helps promote the qi and blood flow in areas of the body. Both qi and blood nourish the peripheral nerves in our body and help heal them from damage. Similarly, qi and blood stagnation in the body may cause pain. In that case, an acupuncturist would move qi and blood. From a western perspective, stimulation of acupuncture points can signal the release of endorphins that can block pain receptors and help the patient feel less pain.
I have been able to witness first hand that acupuncture can reduce pain, anxiety and stress and help the digestive system. If a patient is too young to report, you can sometimes see a change because their facial expression goes from a grimace to serene or they will stop crying. Acupuncture is a slow medicine and so it can take multiple sessions to see results. However, these sessions do not cause adverse side effects, which is why it is such great medicine! Neither acupuncture nor Chinese herbs can claim to cure cancer, but they do provide relief from symptoms experienced as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It is important to work as an integrative team with Western medical doctors in order to provide the patient with the best of care. Typically, only acupuncture is provided during chemotherapy. Later, herbs may be introduced after the chemo sessions have ended. The journey with cancer can be a long and tough one, but it fills my heart to help the process by providing relief for pain and nausea while the patient contends with the disease. Cosmetic Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Dermatology at Zi Zai Dermatology Many Regenerate readers are likely familiar with acupuncture and use it to regain or maintain good health. But did you know that about a specialty called cosmetic acupuncture? I initially learned about it when I interviewed acupuncturist Terry Fox for my VoiceAmerica.com radio show in 2015. I was intrigued and decided to sign up for a program this year with Terry at Zi Zai Dermatology as a 50th birthday present to myself. In this article, I’ll describe my experience and then allow acupuncturist Terry Fox and Zi Zai owner Diana Hermann to explain their modalities in more detail. Spoiler alert: they work with the body in a holistic way to allow your beauty to shine through and are, thus and therefore, completely awesome. A cosmetic acupuncture session is like a standard acupuncture session. Terry begins by having you fill out a detailed intake form and then discusses it with you so that he understands your goals and health status. He then starts the session by asking how you are feeling and then taking your pulse and inspecting your tongue. Based on this information, Terry formulates a plan. Though the appointment may be for cosmetic acupuncture, Terry treats the whole person because he believes that health is beauty. He treats the whole body, not just the face. You can see that I have needles in my face, but they are also in my feet, legs, lower arms. He works to keep his clients healthy and vibrant as whole person, which makes sense since our face is connected to the rest of our body. As Terry says, “Seek Health…Find Beauty.” During the needle work, Terry allows his patients to set the pace. During some sessions, I took a refreshing nap. During others, we had fun discussions about his culinary creations, beard competitions,

On the table sci fi, his “Get Foxy” podcast, and so on. In addition to the needle work, Terry does energy work using tuning forks and Qi Gong. He also ends the session with a facial tea and moisturizers from the Zi Zai collection. I left each session feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. I did a course of treatment that consisted of 15 sessions and could not be more pleased with the results. I noticed that my skin tone evened out and the redness on my cheeks disappeared. Some of the fine lines around my eyes diminished and my jawline also became firmer. Since Terry treated my whole person, I feel better and more energetic. My goal was not to look 20 years younger, but to be the best version of my 50-year old self, which we accomplished. WHOOT! To age gracefully, I also watch my diet, which could best be described as
organic Mediterranean, exercise regularly, connect with others and manage my stress. I invite all the fabulous ladies of a certain age in NoCo to avoid the toxic fillers and “Get Foxy” naturally with cosmetic acupuncturist Terry Fox. You’ll have fun, look radiant and be glad that you did! Let’s now move into the interview portion with Terry and Diana so they can explain their modalities in more detail. Sandra: Is cosmetic acupuncture contained in the traditional acupuncture curriculum? If not, how much additional training did you receive? Terry: When I was in school it was not, so I had to receive additional training beyond my Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine . I think this may be changing, as Cosmetic Acupuncture is one of the fastest growing sub-specialties in the American acupuncture scene. I integrate several different styles of facial cosmetic acupuncture in my practice. I’ve trained for hundreds of hours with various instructors over the years, starting with “Doc” Ron Rosen, then Denise Ellinger, Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, and most recently, Dr. Ping Zhang. And I continue to learn. In the future, I’ll continue training with Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, and I hope to train with Michelle Gellis, Virginia Doran and Shellie Goldstein. Sandra: Why did you choose to specialize in cosmetic acupuncture? Terry: It wasn’t something I had originally intended to do as I was looking to specialize in treating pain. One of my big mentors in Acupuncture school was “Doc” Ron Rosen. Ron learned Cosmetic Acupuncture techniques during his time in Taiwan and was utilizing those in his practice. In

motion a process that can stimulate collagen and elastin production. And this, in turn, can create a more youthful looking appearance. Sandra: How many treatments are recommended for the initial program? What about a maintenance program? Terry: Every person is different, so an evaluation is necessary before I can recommend a specific number of treatments. But on average, it’s typically between 12-20. Ideally, the patient receives treatments twice per week.
Sandra: Thank you, Terry! Diana, tell us about Chinese Medicine Dermatology now. What types of herbal products are available at Zi Zai Dermatology to supplement the cosmetic acupuncture program? Diana: At Zi Zai Dermatology, we handcraft the 100% natural skincare products that are used in our facial cosmetic treatments in the clinic. We have 4 different lines, each one formulated according to the needs of different complexions. We have a line of products for complexions prone to acne, one for sensitive or red complexions, one for skin with dark spots or that needs brightening, and a line for dry skin that needs more nourishment. Each of the 4 product lines has formulations to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. We use exquisite organic oils and the highest quality Chinese herbs to craft our products. We would never use harsh, unsafe or unnatural products on your skin in our clinic. Our products are available in our shop so that clients can continue to properly care for their skin at home, even after the facial acupuncture series has been completed. Sandra: Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers about cosmetic acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Dermatology? Diana: Cosmetic facial acupuncture is an effective, safe and completely natural approach to aging gracefully. If there are additional inflammatory skin conditions present such as acne, rosacea, melasma, eczema seborrheic dermatitis or perioral dermatitis, then Chinese Herbal Medicine becomes the treatment of choice. Herbal prescriptions are custom formulated for the individual patient and topical herbal preparations (ointment, creams, washes) can be applied externally to help the skin heal. Terry is the cosmetic acupuncture specialist here, and I am the Chinese Medicine Dermatology specialist. We make a great team for keeping your complexion and whole body vibrant and healthy. Sandra: Thank you both for sharing this wonderful information about cosmetic acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Dermatology! PHOTOS: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU
2007 when he offered to teach me the technique, I took the opportunity. It was another chance to learn something unique from Doc. What I saw in that training blew my mind. I could see visible differences in the patient’s skin and musculature. I could see how vital and vibrant they looked in comparison to how they appeared before the treatment. And I could see how happy the patients were with their results. Personally, I feel joyous seeing women rediscover their radiance. I love seeing them genuinely smile as they look at themselves in the mirror. I love being able to help them reclaim their vibrancy and vitality. And that’s what makes cosmetic and facial acupuncture such fun for me — being able to witness the Feminine in its truest authenticity. Sandra: What are the goals of cosmetic acupuncture and how does it achieve them? Terry: Cosmetic and facial acupuncture are simply an extension of what I was taught in acupuncture school. The information I learned enhanced what I already knew and took it to a whole new level. As the adage goes, “the devil is in the details.” My cosmetic acupuncture work is a more subtle and detailed version of the standard acupuncture I use every day. I had no idea I could use acupuncture to reduce the look of fine lines, to help raise sagging eyelids or reduce puffy bags under the eyes. It can also help lift the breasts and tighten the abdominals. In my opinion, the greatest goal of facial acupuncture is to facilitate a patient’s authentic love of themselves. Acupuncture is a holistic modality that addresses the whole person — mental, emotional and physical. Often, lines on the face are a product of chronically repeated emotional responses. We may chat about those lines, what emotions are related to them and what steps a patient can take to change those habitual responses. As far as physical goals, the idea is to help the body rejuvenate tissue through its own innate healing capacity. The needles create minute trauma in the tissue that the body then heals. This stimulates blood circulation and sets in
Before
After I recommend patients receive “tuneup” treatments once per month for 3 months, then 4 treatments per year (usually at the change of seasons). Depending upon diet and lifestyle, results from facial acupuncture can last 3-5 years. Sandra: What other lifestyle choices would support a more youthful appearance? Terry: Proper diet and hydration are key, along with mindset and positive self-talk. Currently I’m developing an online coaching program to teach my patients about healthy lifestyle choices and how to implement them. Look for that in the coming months.

An Alternative Way to Give this Holiday Season MOLLY GEPPERT As much as we might not be able to believe it, the holiday season is fast approaching! This time of the year always seems to fly by in a whirlwind of twinkling lights, holiday festivities, the merriment of spending quality time with friends and family and braving the crowds to shop for gifts. If you’re like me, the idea of going out and shopping for gifts is not your favorite part of the season. Battling crowds, searching for parking spaces and enduring the weather to buy gifts does not put me in the holiday mood.
There is also the feeling that I’m buying into the consumerism of the holidays and adding to the world’s environmental problems through the processes needed to make these gifts and the waste. Do my friends really want or need these cat wine glass charms or candle holders? Chances are, they don’t. With space at a premium in my friends’ cozy dwellings, there isn’t much room for extraneous gifts that will take up precious space. They will likely not bring additional happiness and might just be re-gifted or wind up in a consignment store. That’s why I love the idea of donating to a charity in your loved one’s name rather than buying more junk. This is an especially compelling notion in the face of huge government spending cuts to social services that are likely in the years to come. However, it’s important to donate to an organization or cause that is close to the heart of who you’re doing this for; don’t proselytize your own cause. Choose an organization that
matches them, not you. It’s to show that you’ve really thought about someone and their likes and interests. However, choosing the right nonprofit can be an overwhelming and time-consuming task because you want to make sure and that the organization is transparent about how they operate. There are many online tools and websites to help you research various

Many nonprofits secure matching donations on this day to make your donation go further. #GivingTuesday falls on Tuesday, November 28th this year, so mark your

calendars and see if you favorite nonprofit has a match. Colorado Gives Day is another special day where your donation goes further. On Tuesday, December 5th, the Community First Foundation and FirstBank provide a Million Dollar Incentive Fund to increase the value of every donation made on this day until the fund is all used up. Donors go to the Coloradogive.org website to make their donation. They can even schedule the transaction for those of us who have a tendency to forget. Each Colorado nonprofit receives a percentage of the total amount of money raised on Colorado Gives Day. Many organizations have the ability to send a card or, if you want to go paperless, an email notifying your giftee that a donation was made in their name. Typically the amount donated is not included, but make sure you look ahead of time if that is something you care about. Once you have chosen a nonprofit whose mission you find compelling, please give an unrestricted gift, which means don’t put strings on your donation. Unrestricted donations allow the nonprofit to use your money where it is needed most urgently. There’s nothing more frustrating for a nonprofit
than having a huge fund tied up in one project while scrambling around trying to scrap enough cash together to pay for other areas that are just as important. If
you’ve done your homework and researched your nonprofits, trust them to use your money wisely. The flexibility you will be giving alone is almost priceless… almost. If you’re looking for a local nonprofit, consider the nonprofit I work for, Trees, Water & People (TWP)! Our work is guided by two core beliefs: that natural resources are best protected when local people play an active role in their care and management and that preserving local ecosystems is essential for the ongoing social, economic, and
environmental health of communities everywhere. We are staffed by a group of dedicated altruists who feel strongly about helping communities better manage the natural resources upon which their livelihoods depend. Our approach creates economic opportunity while improving the environment and human health in Central America and on U.S. Tribal Lands. To learn more about TWP, visit treeswaterpeople.org. No matter which charity you choose to give to this holiday season, your gift will be filled with meaning and make a positive difference in the world. Happy Holidays! Kiss the Ground SANDRA G. MALHOTRA I could not agree more with the sentiment above – and hugging trees, too. I am therefore very excited about a new book about regenerative farming by Josh Tickell entitled Kiss the Ground: How the Food We Eat Can Reverse Climate Change, Heal Your Body & Ultimately Save Our World. What’s great is that Josh and Rebecca Harrell Tickell are also producing a documentary of the same name, so be on the lookout for that.
I had the opportunity to ask Josh a several questions about regenerative farming and included an excerpt here. Check out the complete interview at regeneratemagazine.com. Your book and upcoming documentary, both entitled Kiss the Ground, are a homage to the thin layer of soil upon which we rely for life. Can you describe what healthy, living soil is? Most of us don’t realize that the top 1-3 inches of soil, otherwise known as “topsoil,” is what we rely on for our food and globally, that soil is being lost at an exponential rate. Essentially, we are at the conflux of two exponential, civilization-level trends. The first is the rise in human population. The second is the downward spiral of soil’s ability to produce food. As the gap between the two widens, so too does global tension. Much of what we see happening in our world right now on a geo-political, social, economic and ecosystemic level is rooted in what is happening globally to our soil.
Healthy soil is the basis for the following fundamental prerequisites for human life: 1) water retention and the “small” water cycle of mists, dews and fogs, 2) carbon dioxide capture and retention of stable long-chain carbons (soil is the largest carbon sink), 3) the lifeforms that sustain plants (i.e. “crops” or “food”), including the transfer of all critical minerals, vitamins and building blocks for human nutrition. This is why a one of the mottos of Kiss the Ground is “soil has superpowers.” There are different names for healthy soil, including “humus”, but let’s get visceral about it. Dig your hands into some really great soil and notice the color and the smell. The best soil is super dark, moist, and has an earthy rich smell. This is the stuff that literally has trillions of life forms in it. It is made primarily of bonded carbon which is reflected by its dark color. The carbon bonds makeup a type of “sponge” which holds microscopic water droplets that keep the soil moist. It’s inside that aquatic
26 Regenerate • October/November/December 2017 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com
environment that the numerous organisms that inhabit the soil live. Contrast this with the type of soils that are common in our agricultural areas that now cover the roughly 2/3rd’s of our planet that is turning to desert (a.k.a. “desertifying”). These soils are commonly brittle, dry, orangey-yellow, “platey,” and smell of acid. This is the stuff that regenerative farmers look at with sadness in their eyes because it is not really soil, it’s just dirt, or even worse, dust. And dust is what our civilization will become unless we mount an international effort to save our soils. If we save the soil, we can literally save the world. Beyond impacting the soil…how does our current agriculture model affect our health? In particular, how does the current model contribute to chronic disease, like cancer? As more science comes to the forefront, we are quickly realizing that that the belief that cancer is primarily a heredity or genetic condition and secondarily a condition caused by external factors (nutrition, chemical exposure, etc.) is false. Many scientists are now finding this type of chronic disease is attributable instead in the range of 90% to external factors and 10% to genetic predisposition. Now, the bulk of our environmental toxicological exposure comes through what we eat. And today what we eat is full of toxic chemicals. Farmers spray about 3 pounds of toxic pesticides per American per year onto our food, mostly right before it is harvested. It’s no surprise then, that there are over 200 peer reviewed studies that link synthetic pesticide exposure to chronic conditions including cancer and especially to childhood diseases like
paediatric cancer, ADD, ADHD, and even low IQ. Added to that we are eating tremendous quantities of omega-6 rich oils like soybean oil, canola oil and corn oil, which evolutionarily speaking, humans were not designed to eat. The omega-6 oils compete with the healthy omega3’s in our bodies, thus contributing directly to things like obesity, diabetes and cancer. Of course, the reason we eat these oils is they are a by-product of the large monocrops grown in the middle of America. These omega-6 monocrop oils have been hoisted onto the public as “healthy oils.” The double whammy of poisons in our food and unhealthy omega-6 oils creates an inflammation firestorm for the human body. Long term, the consumption of this combo leads to chronic disease. What can people reading this do? Buy and read Kiss the Ground, the book. Donate to and become a member of the Kiss the Ground non-profit (KissTheGround.com). Cut out the foods you eat that support the big monocrops (corn, soy, hay and wheat). These are the foods found in the bags, boxes and cartons in the middle of the grocery store. Do your best to support farmers and products that are USDA Certified Organic. And even better, if you can find a local farmer or rancher that is practicing regenerative agriculture, do everything you can to support that person and their operation. Compost your food scraps and push for an urban composting program in your area. Help outlaw concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO’s) and factory farming. Lobby to help re-write the Farm Bill in 2018 (it’s being redrafted) to eliminate the subsidies for monocrops.

Musings on Big Cancer SANDRA G. MALHOTRA Americans are very charitable and gave $389.05 billion to help those in need in 2016. However, not every non-profit is a good steward of their funds, so it is a good idea to do research before donating your hard-earned dollars. I was particularly curious about the big cancer charities and did some research on Charity Navigator (https://www.charitynavigator.org/). Below is the data from their income statements along with my incredible opinion about those numbers.
The Good St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital looks like a solid and commendable charity based on their income statement. CEO pay and fundraising expenses are not excessive. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. This is charity at its finest.
The Bad I am unclear as to the purpose of the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure charities. If their goal is to reduce cancer and put themselves out of business, then they are not doing a great job of it. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. Though the overall cancer death rate in the US fell by 13% between 2004 and 2013, more than 1,500 people per day are expected to die from cancer this year. This sounds CHARITY St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (FYE 6/2015)
like job security to me. I’d rather donate to organizations that are effective and not running in circles on my dime.
The Ugly If you peruse the websites for these charities, you’ll notice single-minded emphasis on scientific research to find “the cure”. Reductionist, left-brained scientific research into the physical causes of cancer and cures that will only address the physical manifestation of it. This leads me to the following questions: • If you are of the belief that cancer can have more complex physical, mental, emotional or spiritual causes, then is it any wonder that the elusive cure has not been found, and likely never will be? • If you are also of the belief that chronic exposure to unregulated toxins in the air, water, land, factory farmed food, body-care products, cleaning products, etc. (the list goes on and on), then are you curious as to why these charities strenuously avoid addressing this elephant in the room? • More than 40 years after declaring the war on cancer (there’s that word), the National Cancer Institute has spent $90 billion on research

Imagine if just a fraction of those funds were used to transition our chemical-intensive farming model to a regenerative one, to understand the role emotional health plays, to study how to strengthen our immune systems, and so on. Perhaps more than incremental progress would be made? Because of all of this, it’s my incredible opinion that neither our government, charitable organizations nor conventional medical community really want to eradicate cancer; they want to look busy, make incremental gains and stay in business. The “war” employs too many people and is making quite a few of them very wealthy. There are many wonderful nonprofits that carry out their missions effectively, and I would rather donate to them. In this issue, for example, we profiled Kiss the Ground and Trees, Water and People. And that’s my incredible opinion. If you have a different view of these charities, then I’d love to hear it and expand my horizons. Email me at Sandra@genrwholisticmedia.com.

Food as Medicine for Stress Management MARIAN MITCHELL
Life is stressful these days. Businesses have tight deadlines, technology makes it too easy to work from home (or at your kid’s ball game), schools require hours of homework per night starting in kindergarten, and the list goes on. It is an effort just to rest with the perpetual to do list.
Unfortunately, living this way leads to a long list of health problems that we consider normal parts of aging. I want you to know that it’s not. It’s your body telling you you’re pushing too hard and it needs a break! In the functional medicine world, we call this adrenal fatigue.
Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms of adrenal fatigue tend to be brushed off as stress or lack of a good night’s sleep, for example, but they happen for too long. Your body is trying to tell you something is wrong so pay attention. As time goes on, they will go from mild and manageable to hard to ignore. Symptoms include: • Low energy through the day and trouble getting out of bed • Sleep issues
• Low thyroid function (hypothyroid)
• Muscle tightness, stiffness, soreness
• Inability to lose weight and weight gain
The longer you ignore the symptoms, the more depleted the adrenals become and the more likely you are to develop permanent thyroid issues. It’s time to take notice, honor your body and give it the rest and nutrients it desperately needs. Food is powerful medicine. Through food (and learning to build rest into your weekly schedule) you can mitigate your stress, have more energy, sleep better and just feel good again. Foods that help your body restore the adrenals include: Protein rich foods — Make sure to start your day with at least 25 grams of protein and pair protein with every meal and snack. This will keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day. Salt — When we are stressed a hormone called aldosterone, the

salt-monitoring hormone, becomes depleted. If salt levels get too low, maintaining blood pressure becomes difficult and dizzy spells can occur. Be sure to be liberal with sea salt when cooking. Healthy fats — Fats from healthy sources keep blood sugar stable, are rich in essential vitamins A, D, E and K2 and even promote weight loss when paired with a low carb diet. Healthy fats include avocados; coconuts and unrefined coconut oil; olives and extra virgin olive oil; nuts and seeds; butter from grass fed, pastured cows; ghee; and lard and tallow from pastured animals that ate a native diet (not GMO corn and soy). Magnesium rich foods — When stressed, we crave chocolate because it’s rich in
magnesium! Magnesium is a relaxing mineral and can reduce headaches, improve sleep quality, reduce muscle cramping, increase energy and help relieve anxiety and depression. Magnesium rich foods include cacao (raw chocolate powder), dark leafy greens (all of them), blackstrap molasses, avocados, nuts and seeds, and even wild caught fish. Vitamin C rich foods — Your adrenals use vitamin C to produce hormones, especially cortisol. When vitamin C is low, they get out of balance and actually produce more cortisol which increases anxiety, impacts blood sugar levels, blood pressure and leads to weight gain. However, DON’T reach for Emergen-C or run to Costco for some cheap vitamin C. The synthetic stuff isn’t easily used by the body, is
made from GMO corn and destroys the bacteria in your gut, causing other issues. Instead, choose citrus fruits, berries, dark leafy greens, tropical fruits, broccoli and tomatoes. You can also add camu-camu or acerola powder into your routine. B vitamins — B vitamins help us manage stress by balancing our neurotransmitters and brain chemistry, thus giving us more energy. Foods that are rich in B vitamins include dark leafy greens, legumes, nuts and seeds, avocado, pasture raised eggs, meats, liver and wild caught fish. Knowing this information is great, though finding ways to incorporate these foods into our diets can be a challenge. So, I’ve developed three recipes for you that are designed to help you use these foods to your advantage.

3. Chop bell pepper into bite size pieces and dice onion. Add onion into skillet and cook for two minutes uncovered. (You won’t need the lid anymore so just place it to the side.) 4. Add bell pepper and tomatoes and cook for about 5 minutes. 5. Add spinach, stir in, then move vegetables to one side of the skillet to make room for your egg. 6. Crack the egg into the skillet and cook until desired doneness. 7. First put the vegetables into your bowl, then top with the egg. Cut your avocado in half and twist apart. Use the side that does not have the seed, slice in the skin with a knife, remove with a spoon and add to your bowl. PHOTO: MARIAN MITCHELL
The breakfast bowl is a quick and easy way to get protein, healthy fats and nutrient dense food into your day. The second recipe is comforting chicken and vegetable soup. It is made with healing bone broth, chicken and nutrient rich vegetables. And, finally, a delicious recipe for homemade coconut oil chocolate fudge. This no-cook recipe is healthy, satisfying and full of magnesium to satisfy your mind, body, and soul (because chocolate is a soul food). Cheers to health and a stressfree holiday season!

1. Crush the garlic, peel off the skin and set aside. 2. Chop the onion and slice the celery. 3. Peel and chop the carrots and sweet potato. 4. Chop the chicken into bite size pieces. 5. Now mince the garlic. (Waiting to chop it increases the garlic’s healing capacity.) 6. Take a large pot, pour in the broth and water. Then add in the chicken, spices and all the vegetables except for the spinach. 7. Bring to a boil, then turn down to medium-low heat and let simmer for 20-30 minutes. 8. During the last 2-3 minutes, add the spinach to your soup and stir. Serve once the spinach is soft and wilted. In our lifetime, each of us seen many things, had many experiences, and made countless decisions; some good and some bad. For years, life may continue to unfold smoothly, but when we start hitting the rough spots how do we handle them? WRITERS If sharing your great content about wholistic living brings you joy, then let's talk. Each issue has a theme, and here are upcoming ones. Note that Regenerate is now a quarterly magazine! January/February/March 2018: In the first issue of the new year, we’ll focus on the business of birth. This could be taken literally or metaphorically, as the birth of new ideas or perspectives. Due date: 11/10/17 April/May/June 2018: The second issue of the year will celebrate wise women — the crones. The world needs to hear us roar. Besides, since when did a flawless complexion dictate our value in the world? I dig my crow’s feet. Due date: 2/10/18 July/August/September 2018: The next issue will focus on trauma. I was fascinated to learn that trauma can be passed down through the generations. Let’s delve into this because it may be one reason why racial strife persists. Due date: 5/10/18 Check out our submission guidelines at http://regeneratemagazine.com/submit-article/ and send original articles to editor@genrwholisticmedia.com. Articles up to 1200 words accepted.
EVENT PARTNERS Regenerate Events are happening. We're planning all types of events to educate and inspire about healthy lifestyles for ourselves and our pets.
