Hate Crimes Continue in Ferguson

by Maria Blondin Editor-in-Chief

P

olice are investigating a string of hate crimes after several attacks of Bosnians in the same Southern St. Louis neighborhood that is garnering so much attention after a jury’s decision to not indict officer Darren Wilson. According to a police report, at about 5:30 a.m. on December 6, a Bosnian woman was driving when three black males in their late-teens to early-20s stepped in front of her vehicle. When the woman tried to drive around them, the suspects reportedly pulled out a firearm, so she stopped the car. After hitting her windshield with a crowbar, the suspects pulled the woman from her car, threw her on the ground, and kicked her. One suspect then grabbed her purse, searched it, and told the others it was empty. All three suspects then fled the scene. Police say the woman said she thought the crime was racially motivated because the suspects asked her if she was Bosnian. “This has all the apperances of a hate crime based on the information that we have,” St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay stated. “The fact that they did suggest that she was a Bosnian, she was a Bosnian lady. We’ve already turned this over to the FBI.” That same morning, Bosnian Seldin Dranovic was beaten by three teens wielding hammers; but he managed to escape. Bosnian Zemir Begic would not be so lucky. An hour after Dranovic reported his attack, officers found Zemir Begic unconcious according to St. Louis Metro Police. Begic had been traveling in his car when, at approximately 1:15 a.m., several minors approached on foot and began damaging it. Begic got out of the car and the minors began to attack him with hammers and yell at him. Begic suffered injuries to his head, abdomen, face, and mouth. He was taken to the hospital when he was found, where he was pronounced dead.

Two teenagers who were involved in the attack on Begic, a 15-year-old and 16-year-old male, were in custody Sunday evening. Leah Freeman, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, said that investigators are still working to determine a motive for the gruesome attack.

For-profit prisons in the United States should be banned. For-profit prisons are privately operated facilities that receive government contracts to house prisoners. Their existence is controversial because of their tendency to cut costs at the expense of their prisoners’ human rights. They have also been criticized for lobbying behind legislation that advocates tougher sentencing policies that lead to increased incarceration rates. However, some analysts claim that for-profit prisons are capable of cutting costs without decreasing quality. Forprofit prisons are less regulated, meaning they can theoretically finish projects faster and cheaper.

Justice is Blind* by Maria Blondin Editor-in-Chief

I

f you pay any attention to college football at all, you’ve probably heard of Jameis Winston. The 6’4 Florida State quarterback was the winner of the 2013 Heisman, a prestigious award given to the best player in college football. Previous winners include O.J. Simpson, Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell and Barry Sanders. But while Winston is a star on the field, it’s his actions off the field that cause me to have a problem with him. Winston is currently in the middle of a case involving rape allegations from December 2012. The unidentified victim made her initial report to the to the university’s police department within hours of the incident, but there are several discrepancies about how the school addressed the situation. Florida State University is being federally investigated for its handling of this case. Title IX requires that colleges and universities receiving federal money conduct prompt investigations into allegations of sexual assault against students if they know about them. Tim Jansen, University administrator and Winston’s attorney, had a head start on the State Attorney, Willie Meggs, in Tallahassee responsible for investigating and prosecuting serious crimes. Jansen received all police reports at least four days before Meggs was handed the case. A move that is causing many to criticize the school, saying that it was a move by the higher-ups to cover the entire situation. After Winston’s DNA was matched to genetic material found on the woman’s underwear, his attorney changed his story from denying that anything happened between the two to saying that they had a consensual sexual encounter. Florida State is in the middle of determining whether Winston violated any or all four sections of the student code of conduct—

*Unless you’re an Athlete

two for sexual misconduct and two for endangerment. The problem with this investigation is that the hearings continue to be postponed, and the cause of this seems to have to do with the recent success of the football program. The Seminoles were recently announced as one of the four teams that will be participating in the first ever college football playoffs. In Jameis Winston’s explicit, detailed statement denying that he is guilty of rape, in which he (or someone writing on his behalf) makes the remarkable assertion that “[t]he only thing as vicious as rape is falsely accusing someone of rape.” Let’s think about that for a minute. Winston is claiming that being falsely accused of rape causes the same emotional pain as actually being raped. Of course, Winston isn’t talking about the average man, he is referring to what the affect of being accused of rape could have on him. While being convicted of rape would have a great effect on the average Joe’s future, many athletes have had no trouble bouncing back after run-ins with the law. Mike Tyson was convicted of rape and when he was released from prison, he was welcomed back to the world of boxing with open arms. He proceeded to earn a series of recordsetting paydays, and ESPN even tweeted him birthday wishes. (How many other convicted felons get shout outs from internationally famous twitter accounts?) NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was suspended a few games last year after repeated allegations of sexual assault, but still makes good money (he’ll make 11.6 million this year) and most people don’t even remember his suspension. I’m sure that as this “nightmare” continues Winston will be wishing that he was already a professional athlete and was able to pay for the situation to go away, just as Lakers star Kobe Bryant did. Bryant was

accused of rape and settled out of court completely. Despite basically admitting his guilt by settling; he earned 31 million in endorsements last year. Besides the rape allegations Winston has had other run-ins with the law while at FSU. In April, he took $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish from a Tallahassee Publix, and in September he stood atop a table in a Florida State lunchroom and yelled an obscene phrase. Yet he continues to be praised. Several articles were written about the community service Winston participated in for the local YMCA as punishment for the crab leg incident; two that didn’t even mention the reason why Winston was at the Y in the first place. If nothing but slap on the wrist comes from FSU after this case is settled, what message does this send to not only rape victims but athletes? If you can get away with things like rape or murder because you can catch a ball or shoot a basket; our justice system has gone down the drain.

Are Corporations People?

by Molly Arndt Opinion Editor

A

s citizens of the United States, we are given basic rights. We have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as well as the twentyseven amendments. However, after the Citizens United and Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decisions, corporations now have some of the same rights as people do- the free exercise of religion clause, and the right to donate money to political campaigns. This sets a dangerous precedent. If corporations, composed of a few people in leadership positions, can decide what religion or political campaign or cause they want to support and impose that religion or political belief or cause on their employees, the rights of the employees are being compromised. I can start a large company, hire thousands of workers, and decide that due to my religious practices all of my workers have to shave their heads and wear entirely tweed clothing. Because of this dangerous legal precedent, this is possible. By making these decisions, the Supreme Court is essentially saying that money equals power, or somehow legitimizes the acquisition of power. It is

placing the rights of a few, very wealthy people over the rights of those who have the misfortune of working for them. Allowing the wealthy to fund the campaigns of those who will represent their interests in return gives them exponentially more power than those who cannot afford to do so. With the Hobby Lobby case, which gave the company the right to refuse to supply birth control to workers with their health care plan, the CEO and board are controlling the religious practices of the employees. This is corrupt. At a time in our country when income inequality is at its highest since 1928, giving business owners control over the health care decisions and religious practices over their workers will further divide the country. The Hobby Lobby and Citizens United precedent goes beyond political campaigns or birth control. We are living in a modern society suffering from historical problems- racial tensions, income inequality, political gridlock and foreign conflict. On top of this, we must worry about net neutrality and how creepy it is that Facebook can now access the contacts on our phone. Now, more than ever, we need to cling to our

humanity in every way possible in order to solve these problems. Corporations are not people-- the people who work for them are. CEOs have every right to practice their religion in their own private lives, as do their employees. Extremely wealthy people have the right to vote, but they don’t have the right to spend billions of dollars funding candidates who will only perpetuate corruption. Corporations need people. People don’t need corporations.

5 Festive Family Activities

With every passing holiday season, it seems like Black Friday Sales creep closer into Thanksgiving celebrations, and stores like Walmart and Target become a Mecca for merchandise madness. It’s easy to get caught up in getting the best deals on the hottest holiday gifts, but the Regina Spectrum staff would like to remind everyone to slow down this Christmas season and to enjoy the quaint and lively opportunities of holiday cheer that Iowa City can offer.

Amana Colonies

Christmas Craft Shows

The month of December is filled with lots of great Christmas craft shows and markets to offer a wide selection of handmade gifts to the patrons of Iowa City. Regina brought back the Christmas market this year, showcasing over 30 vendors, and the ICPL hosts an annual craft bazaar. Craft shows provide an excellent opportunity for artists to share their talent, and for patrons to buy unique handmade gifts. Best of all, a portion of the proceeds are usually donated to a good cause. Yay crafts!!

In the Amana Colonies you’ll find many shops, restaurants serving German cuisine and the Tannenbaum Forest. The “forest” is located inside a barn where local business sponsor a Christmas tree and it is decorated according to a certain theme. You can also see Santa and hear carolers sing. There is no cost to get into the Tannenbaum Forest, but you can donate to the Make a Wish Foundation for your entry free.

Holiday Local Theater

Christmastime is a great time to see some wonderful local productions of traditional plays, ballets, and concerts. The Nolte Dance Academy performs the Nutcracker at the Englert every year, and Riverside Theater presented A Christmas Carol. There is something for all ages to enjoy, and seeing theater productions is a great way to support fine arts in Iowa City.

Ice Skating

While it probably isn’t safe to venture on any frozen natural bodies of water in the area, the Coral Ridge Mall ice skating rink is an often-overlooked holiday treasure. Coral Ridge has public skate until 5 on weekdays and from noon to four on weekend days, and for a $6 admission it’s hard to come by cheaper entertainment. Bring your friends or family and burn some of those Christmas cookies off.

Christmas lights Sight Seeing

There are a lot of great neighborhoods and houses in the Iowa City area that deck the halls HARD for Christmas. A fun, and relatively cheap family activity is to get hot cocoa and peppermint mochas to go and drive around listening to your favorite holiday music while admiring beautiful Christmas lights. Some primo Christmas light neighborhoods are right around Regina. A must-see house deemed the “Santa House” located on Valley View Drive in Coralville has Yard Santas, life-size Nativity, model trains, animations, and appearances by Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Mr. Elf.

Regals Prove Rankings Wrong By Cammy Verducci Sports-Editor

T

he Regina Girl’s Basketball Team has started their season off strong. The Runnin’ Regals have won their first three games with a comfortable lead; one of which was an upset against 4A Clear Creek Amana last Saturday. The Regals are proving their preseason ranking of sixth in the conference to be an inaccurate one. With over 15 three-point shots made in three games, the sharp shooting Regals lead the conference in beyond the arc shots. However, they are equally as strong in the paint. Senior Post Hannah Stein has scored 15 points on layups alone. “It is a great feeling to know that when you are heavely gaurdeed in the lane you have shooters to help

carry the offense,” says Hannah Stein. However, the Regals best strength is their defense. Freshman starter Lauren Gaarde leads the team with a whopping 11 steals and Junior Kennedy Brown leads the team with 7 blocks. “The first few games of my high school career have been an great experience. Everyone on the team is really supportive,” said Gaarde. The Reglas will travel to Durant to face the highly ranked Wildcats on Friday at 6:30. The Regals will then take on Northeast on Saturday at Regina at 6:00. With everything to prove, the Regals will continue to out hustle, work, and think their opponents. Cook Crushes Clippers by Payton Raso Sports Editor

R

egina boys basketball kicked off their season on Saturday December 6th at Clear Creek Amana with a big opening win. Senior Drew cook lead the team with 30 pts and solidified his position as a leader on this team. “We went in with the mindset of you can’t win them all if you don’t win the first one.” said Cook. Clear Creek hung with the Regals all through the first half. Regina got in a little trouble when CCA went on a scoring run and it looked like they might pull away. “Our defense was a little weak.” said Cook,”We need to work on it. We let up way too many easy baskets.” Regina rebounded from that run and took control just before the half. The Regals were then able to put the Clippers away with consistent free throw shooting. Even when Clear Creek would make shots, they would have to foul the Regal players and the Regals responded by knocking down enough free throws to pull away. “This was a really good opening game for us.” said Cook, “We knew that they were returning a good number of starters but we were ready for the challenge. Coach never let us think about losing. He kept saying that we were going to win the game and that gave us the confidence to get it done.” The Regals have big goals this year.

With a new coach in Stu Ordman, the guys are looking to end Regina’s state tournament drought. Coach Ordman has his team more prepared than ever. He brings in in depth scouting reports on each of Regina’s opponents and really prepares his guys to be in the best position to win. As Cook puts it, “He wants there to be no unknowns. The more prepared we are the better we will play.” Coach Ordman has also made the best of what is a unique situation. He only had a little over a week to prepare his team for its first game. And he got it done. Squeezing almost 3 weeks worth of material into such a short span of time he worked the guys both mentally and physically and it paid off on Saturday. Regina has a full schedule running up to Christmas Break. Upcoming home opponents Tipton, and Northeast Goose Lake will provide exciting matchups. This should be an exciting season as the Regals strive for a state tournament berth. Drew Cook talks with Coach Ordman Tuesday, December 9, at a home game against Tipton.

he 2014-2015 Regina wrestling season kicked off with an away meet at Tipton. Regina lost to Mid-Prairie 42-36 but beat Tipton 52-15. The wrestling team will have 3 varsity home meets this season and 11 away meets this year (not including sectionals, districts, and state). Senior wrestler TJ Schott returns this year in hopes of clinching a state title. He reflected his feelings on his final season and hopes for his younger brother beginning his first, “My goals are to make it to state and place very high on the podium... we only have one freshman and that’s my brother and I am confident that he will be the best and do the best of his ability to win. I’m very excited for him.” Regina sophomore, Jared “Tank” Brinkman, was the only Regal to qualify for state last season and looks for another qualification berth this season. Brinkman wrestled in the very competitive heavyweight class against mostly upperclassmen. In last year’s state tournament, he was the only wrestler in the 220 lb. weight

class who wasn’t a junior or senior. The Regals only tournament this year will be this Saturday, the 20, and everyone is encouraged to come.

Holidays Around the World

Hanukkah

Also known as the Festival of Lights, Feast of Dedication, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. Children receive gifts, especially in areas where Jewish and Christian children are in close contact. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrians.

Festivus

Clebrated by lovers of Seinfeld. Known as “Festivus for the rest of us,” it originates from Frank Costanza’s wrath with the consumerism of traditional holidays, and rejects the materialism of Christmas by celebrating around an unadorned aluminum pole instead of a Christmas tree.

Yule

Celebrated by pagans and some Wiccans. Yule celebrates the Winter Solstice, and the sun making its way back to the earth. Participants decorate a Yule log, gather with family and friends, and exchange homemade gifts.

FEATURES 23

DECEMBER 15, 2014 Does anyone actually know what Kwanzaa is? Or why Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah? Or how “Festivus for the rest of us” got started? Jesus may be the reason for the Christmas season, but Christmas isn’t the only season. Here are some holidays celebrated by different cultures around the winter solstice.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a week-long secular holiday honoring African-American heritage, observed from December 26 to January 1 each year, almost exclusively by African-Americans in the United States of America. It is modeled after the first harvest celebrations in Africa. The name comes from Swahili from “first fruit.”

Bodhi Day

Celebrated by Buddhists. This marks the day Siddhartha Guatama, the Buddha, attained enlightenment, it is celebrated on December eighth. Children make tree-shaped cookies, candles and colorful lights are hung to signify enlightenment.

anta Claus issued a statement last week to children around the world. In the statement Claus addressed an issue that has been a problem for him for some years now. That was the problem of hand written letters. Claus said that his paper mail has been building up for years and he just received his letter from little Virginia, dated 1897. Claus stated that he is so busy directing elves and preparing his reindeer he doesn’t have time to go through his snail mail and read every single letter. Claus prefers the method of email or DMing on twitter, that way he can have Siri read all of the messages to him without him having to stop what he is doing. (The eventsportrayed in the articles Merry Christmas Claus said that children need to “get with the on this page are fictitious. Any simito real events is coincidental Cartoon by Joe Jennings times” and “leave the snail mail to the 1950’s.” larity and not intended by the author.) Claus also stated that his recycling bill is going through the roof. “Most recycling businesses won’t even consider traveling all the way to the North Pole and those that do are not cheap, Photos below courtesy of John add in the fact that I have 12 tons of mail every Lanternier and Alex Salisbury, in few months and that all adds up to be a major collaboration with Joe Jennings, pain in my bowl full of jelly belly” said Claus.

Sophocles, the Man and Me

Untitled

By Lauren Clapp *All the italicized lines in this poem are direct quotes from the play Antigonê by Sophocles, translated by Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald. Numberless are the world’s wonders, but none more wonderful than man. For he sits atop his self-built throne, letting the world simply kiss his hand. He chooses his allies wisely, believing everything goes as planned. But what he does not realize is that friends made at the risk of wrecking our ship are not real friends at all. So he is struck down by the hand of his friend, the friend with whom he used to stand tall. His enlarged ego and foolish ways, Now the reason he must fall. As he sinks towards his death he looks for revenge because, it is the dead not the living who make the longest demands. While he sits in his own personal hell, he reaches out his hands.

“Break the links that bind you To the boards of depression Try to stand up tall and meet at ends Within your confession Even when the world believes You don’t need attention Actions can mean less than desires Or intentions.”

For all his faults have lead him here, again these faults are mans.

FORBIDDEN PLANET PIZZARIA AND VIDEO ARCADE

his month I am reviewing the new restaurant Forbidden Planet. It opened on September 26th in the old Tobacco Bowl location. Forbidden is a great place to hang out with friends and play videogames. You can get a metro slice (just a quick, flat, crispy square little personal pizza) and stand while eating to play games or sit down at a table to order a thin crust 8 slice pizza or deep dish 8 slice. They have great specialty pizzas, or you can create your own, which was the route fellow Spectrum writer went. Killian Beck ordered the $5 customizable flatbread pizza, pesto, grilled chicken, and added onions and green peppers. “The pizza was one of the most unique pizzas I’ve ever tried. I liked that you could customize it!”, said Beck. Forbidden Planet also offers salad, apps, and desserts, all classic Italian favorites, and coffee and espresso. The pizza comes out quickly, and the ingredients are fresh, mostly local, and the dough and sauces are made in house. It has a fun bright environment, with all different kinds of vintage arcade games, including two table arcade games. Gamers and pizza lovers, check it out over Christmas break!

his month’s featured artist is Evie Rozendaal, a senior here at Regina. Evie is very into drawing cartoons and doodles. After being asked when she started, she replied “Ever since I could fingerpaint!” Evie got inspiration to begin drawing cartoons from the ones she watched as a child and one day she began to start drawing them. Her favorite artist is Seth MacFarlane. He created Family Guy and is the co-creator American Dad! and The Cleveland Show. MacFarlane also wrote and animated a couple throwback shows (Dexter’s labratory and Johnny Bravo). Evie’s favoirte medium is simply markers and pencil. She says “I used them as a child, so why not use them now?” Evie plans to major in animation in college and continue her love and passion for art. She has even created some of her own cartoon characters! Her dream job would be to work as an animator for Nickelodeon.
