It’s Friday the 13th! On today of all days, several people around the world will attempt to stay away from black cats and leaning ladders. Many of the superstitions sound totally crazy, but some of these “Friday the 13th” fun facts might actually creep you out!
Origin of the Superstition
It’s not clear when or why Friday the 13th became associated with bad luck. The association may be biblical, given that the 13th guest at the Last Supper maybe 13 suffers from coming after the more pleasing number 12, which gets to number the months, the days of Christmas and even the eggs in a labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles of Jesus.)

This, of course, brought the count of gods up to the dreaded number of 13. Loki then encouraged Hod, the blind god of winter and darkness, to murder Balder the Good with a spear of mistletoe, throwing all of Valhalla into mourning, ~4000 B.C:

A Chocolate Box Half Full
Molly Arndt Opinion Editor
It has become the vogue in modern times to look upon Valentine’s Day with a hoity toity better-than-thou distaste. This sort of disgust is supposed to signify an anti-capitalist, anti-commercial mentality, signifying a higher plane of thinking, an independent spirit. This sort of thinking is only acceptable if you also live in a tiny hut, make your own clothing, and spend your days subsistence farming. Otherwise, you’re a POSER. Yes, that’s right, a POSER. You are denying others the pleasure of candy, teddy bears, and love because of fake beliefs you only dredge out once a year because you’re bored and want and think hating Valentine’s Day makes you edgy. The problem with being anti-Valentine’s Day is that you’re anti-everything and pro-nothing fun. Why does it upset you that cant others? Can’t you give them that pleasure? Who made you so bitter?
Valentine’s Day has an interesting but hopelessly romantic past. St. Valentine (as the legend goes) married couples in secret after the Roman emperor Claudius banned marriages for young people because he believed unmarried men made better soldiers. For all the sad singles out there whining about your Facebook relationship status, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of a perpetually single dude who chose to never get married. Because you don’t have to be in a relationship to appreciate love and wish happiness upon others. Because at the end of the day, Valentine’s Day is just another excuse to be happy. It’s a brief respite from the February cold, a chance to tell someone you think they’re smart and pretty (even if it’s your best platonic friend) and a chance to acknowledge the fact that love exists and is beautiful and someday may happen to you.
1. Write adorable yet heartfelt notes to people you care about. The day isn’t just a celebration of romantic love. 2. Go somewhere populous and mock the obnoxious couples. In your head, of course. Or not- it depends on how good of a person you want to be. 3. Binge watch Parks and Recreation, because that TV show is beautiful and empowering. Or whatever other show you enjoy. 4. Go to the Dollar Tree and wander through the aisles, appreciating the there for a fantastic bargain.

h let me list the ways: you’re forced to buy everyone in the class a Valentine when really only the one you are giving to your crush matters, you get those weird, chalky hearts that don’t even taste good, and if your single, you’re reminded of that fact the entire day and the week leading up to it. Valentine’s day in recent years has become more of a commercial holiday, than one of love. Sales for jewelry, chocolate and giant teddy bears have shot through the roof and the instagram insurmountable and all together unbearable. On a day when you are supposed to be sharing your love with those around you it seems that people about their “great” love life. Now some people may make the case that it is a fad to dislike Valentines Day or that someone is just bitter because they are single on the “day of love” but the people who dislike Valentines day have a great reason to next day is full of discounted chocolate and it’s wonderful, that is why the day after Valentines day is better than the
