EATING OUT

The spice trail THE FAMOUS GREAT NORTH ROAD PROVIDES THE PERFECT SPOT FOR A POST-WORK CURRY. fter a busy day working and driving between appointments – three hours in total – the only thing that kept me going was the promise of a Friday night curry, specifically a Yash curry on the very pretty Great North Road Retford, just a few minutes drive from Bawtry. Now, there are a few Indian restaurants scattered across North and South Yorkshire, all with the same exacting high standards but it had been a while since we visited the team and the charming restaurant. We have never been disappointed before and were convinced it was better than driving all the way back to Sheffield, although amazingly it’s only a 35-minute drive to the Parkway. Anyone who has stood outside Yash will know that it radiates a certain charm. The cosy glow of the conservatory extension and the wooden decking over the green turf leading to the front door create a welcoming environment. Yash opened in 2013 and has fast become the go-to curry house for travellers and residents straddling both sides of the Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire border. ‘House’ probably is the best way to describe the living room-look décor. Instead of the traditional setting many of us have come to expect at an Indian restaurant, you’ll find contemporary black leather seating, neutral walls and matching silver-and-gold menus and artwork. It’s an interesting cultural contrast when coupled with traditional Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, but like many great relationships, these opposites work well together. Bosh, along with his super team, have

A

always made us, and all their customers, welcome from the minute you walk through his door. They appear to know each diner by name, everyone works hard to make you feel like it’s your first dining experience in their particular restaurant. Work finished for the day, we were first there, 5.30pm, opening time. Equally ravenous, the powerful fusion of aromas hit us like a, well, like a direct train to Kashmir! Whack, straight to the senses, take me to my table! Although the menu is compact, there are a surprising number of dishes to choose from including tandooris, chef ’s specialities and a vegetarian section, with curries in many different mild and spicy sauces. For sheer ease and speed (I told you we were hungry) we ordered a Mixed starter to share whilst we studied the vast menu. It arrived quickly and was the right choice for two hungry travellers – I counted seven varieties of their starters, all on one plate. We picked our way through a vegetable samosa, onion bhaji, grill Lahsen mushrooms (garlic mushrooms to you and I) marinated with ginger, lime, green chillis, herbs and spices), paneer tikka (cheese, gorgeous and spicy hot), seekh tikka, and chicken tikka. Working our way through the above settled us in to what we ordered next, platter number two, actually. It was a beautiful light dish of Maschbiran, exactly as described and as the fish required, mild mannered with a hint of spice. The restaurant was by now filling up; the early dinner was clearly popular and a winner here on the Great North Road. With at least 15 tables now occupied, it

looked exceptionally busy by our standards, although Bosh enthused “just a slow start for us”. After a little (much needed) break, we ventured on to our mains, Chicken Jalfrezi for me and Chicken Shashlik for the lovely Samantha. Both were beautiful, the Jalfrezi was hotter than I had experienced but manageable all the same. The succulent pieces of chicken, off the bone for both meals was just simply heaven, marinated for as long as possible in spices and then cooked in their own individual sauces. My second lovely fellow diner’s Murgh Kalia was both hot AND spicy, I didn’t hear a murmur from her for what seemed a couple of minutes and I couldn’t work out if she was savouring the moment or the heat was getting the better of her. Apparently it was a mixture of both, she told me, when she managed to get her brain and tastebuds used to the heat, she certainly wasn’t complaining. The only choice left to make now was who was going to drive back down the M1, we were all thoroughly contented and full. Bookings are advisable. AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

SHOPPING WHEATLEY RETAIL PARK

Doncaster town centre

Offers a range of the UK’s favourite stores for fashion, homeware and food, so whether you’re looking to do your weekly shopping, or pick up a fashion bargain, you’ll find everything you need at the shopping centre on Wheatley Hall Road.

WICKERSLEY Away from the bustling centre of Rotherham, Wickersley is a lovely little haven, home to some unique and charming boutiques, as well as big brand stores. A small selection of shops and restaurants can be found in The Courtyard whilst The Tanyard plays host to the majority of the high street brands.

DONCASTER CENTRE The town centre features a wide selection of craft shops, designer boutiques as well as major high street names. The market is particularly impressive and has been at the heart of the town for many years. With some 400 shops, stalls and stands, it’s easy to see why.

FRENCHGATE CENTRE If you’re after famous high street names, Frenchgate Centre at the heart of Doncaster is the place to go. As one of the region’s biggest and most popular retail outlets, the shopping centre is one of the most popular destinations for some retail therapy.

LAKESIDE VILLAGE OUTLET With over 45 famous name stores offering up to 60 per cent off the recommended retail price, you are sure to find a bargain at Lakeside Village. A wide range of men’s, women’s and children’s fashions and footwear, plus gifts, homeware, cosmetics and accessories all await you – and at unbelievably low prices.

EPWORTH Away from the bustling city centre, you will find the low-key shopping area of Epworth. Brimming with fantastic, independent shops and a wonderful mix of jewellery boutiques, homeware shops, delicatessens and a sweet shop, there is something to suit everyone.

ROTHERHAM CENTRE With over 400 stores and a pedestrianised centre with plenty of parking, Rotherham is the top choice for many shop-a-holics looking for high street favourites, as well as a whole host of specialist shops. The market, open six days a week, is also a popular destination.

FURTHER AFIELD… MARSHALL’S YARD The award-winning Marshall’s Yard in Gainsborough provides an excellent alternative to larger shopping centres. With 32 stores, ranging from well-known names to local outlets, to a restaurant, coffee shop and health club, there’s plenty to keep you occupied all day long.

RETFORD Like many towns and villages in the area, Retford is home to a great market. The historic market square has been a popular trading place since at least the 12th century, and today you’ll find a mix of well-known and independent stores.

WORKSOP The focal point of Worksop as a shopping destination is the Priory Shopping Centre. It offers a great mix of national and independent retailers in a modern shopping environment. The town centre also boasts a wide variety of shops, cafes and pubs and has a lively street market on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

A unique school model for success THE FOUR SCHOOLS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE ARE DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN A NURTURING FAMILY ATMOSPHERE AND SENSE OF INDIVIDUALITY. et in more than 220 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside in a secure rural location, and under 2.5 hours from the capital by train, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate welcomes girls and boys aged from 3 months and support them through four schools - Chapter House (3 months to Year 5), King’s Magna (Year 6 to 9), The College and The Faculty (both Year 10 to 13). This unique model made up of four smaller schools is designed to maintain a nurturing family atmosphere and sense of individuality, with each school having their own Heads and staff teams. King’s Magna is Queen Ethelburga’s middle school, supporting the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House and the demands of GCSEs. This supportive, vibrant and caring school environment ensures students can grow and mature into their teenage years with confidence.Visitors often comment that there is a ‘palpable sense of respect’ between students and staff, and amongst students themselves. of Queen Ethelburga’s, comments: “Our King’s Magna students set the example for the rest of the Collegiate to follow with their capacity to excel in times of change, and their determination to make the best of their interests, skills and talents. We expect a great deal and they rise to the challenge, whether that be developing their independence, their motivation, their personal and social skills, or their achievements. “No longer the Chapter House age class-based children, not yet the public exam, career and skills developing senior school students; our King’s Magna students develop the foundations for future success with their academic studies, their broad range of activities

and interests, and above all else their infectious enthusiasm in all that they take on. “We have developed our own curriculum which is relevant, challenging and engaging for our learners. Our innovative, modern programmes of study foster curiosity and equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9.” The Queen Ethelburga’s Admissions Team can provide further information and help arrange a visit to see for yourself what makes them so special.Visit www.qe.org or email admissions@qe.org

EASTSIDE GUIDE 2021

MOTORING

Looking to the future

Look sharp There’s new looks and more in this month’s motoring round-up.

Raising the bar The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is a car that delivers on so many fronts, combining sporting elegance with driving pleasure and, with five full-size seats, a roomy cabin and a versatile luggage area. BMW has really raised the bar; like its recently updated BMW 4 Series siblings, the third body variant in the range adopts the brand’s new design language, along with a refined premium ambience in the cabin and a wide array of innovations in the areas of control/operation and connectivity. Four doors, five full-size seats, a large wide-opening boot and a versatile luggage compartment also ensures the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé retains its characteristic strengths in both everyday driving and on longer trips. A trio of petrol engines will be available along with a choice of rear-wheel drive or xDrive diesel models. It will be launched in November and is priced from £40,465 OTR.

Kia’s popular Sportage has been given a facelift - the fifthgeneration model looks to the future with a sleek yet muscular and modern exterior design whilst the cutting-edge interior blends ergonomic layout and the latest tech innovations to create an inspiring space. Revealed earlier this year to great acclaim from the design community, Kia’s new design philosophy – Opposites United – is at the core of the all-new Sportage, influencing every aspect of its appearance and character. These principles will influence all future Kia designs, giving them the same basic DNA. The interior really impresses too with a panoramic curved display, which forms the nucleus of the Sportage’s bold but sophisticated cabin. The high-tech touchscreen pad along with the advanced integrated controller act as the nerve centre for driver and passenger connectivity, functionality and usability needs. Both systems have been created to be easy-to-use, highly intuitive and soft to touch. It will be released in the UK in September.

Rally inspiration Looking for something small, nippy and affordable? Well, Hyundai’s all-new i20 N delivers World Rally Championshipinspired styling and performance from just £24,995. It builds on the strengths of the company’s renowned, performance focussed N brand and the success of the recently launched all new i20. The i20 N blends prodigious power, pin-sharp handling and an immersive driving experience with motorsport-inspired styling, cutting edge connect and infotainment technology and advanced safety features into a practical, five-door hatchback format perfect for every day driving. Performance comes courtesy of a new generation 1.6 T-GDi turbocharged flat power four-cylinder engine, which produces 204PS and 275 Nm of torque. Hyundai’s advanced flat power technology delivers more torque and power at lower engine revs to effortlessly utilise more of the engine’s potential in everyday driving situations.

Stiff competition Based on a brand new platform, the new Nissan Qashqai succeeds in reconciling the challenging customer demands in terms of design, spaciousness, dynamics and carbon footprint. A stiffer bodyshell and reworked steering are just two notable changes to the Qashqai which will be available with with two different powertrain options, a 1.3-litre petrol with mild hybrid, which is offered with two outputs. The 12V ALiS (Advanced Lithium-ion battery System) mild hybrid system provides torque assist, extended idle stop, quick restart and coasting stop (Xtronic only), with improvements to both fuel economy and CO2 output.

EASTSIDE GUIDE 2021

Northern charm

Areas of Doncaster, Rotherham and North Nottinghamshire remain property hotspots – particularly for buyers from outside the area, writes Martin Edwards. f you live in Doncaster and its surroundings, chances are you’re worth quite a chunk more than you were this time last year. Research shows that house prices in the region rose by an average 8.4 per cent year on year this summer – and there’s every chance that the rate of increase will spiral even further. Most estate agents report that demand is unprecedented, with properties in the most sought-after areas often being quickly bid up to 30 per cent more than the asking price. The principal reason, they say, is merely a question of supply and demand. They simply can’t get enough houses to sell. The pandemic discouraged many would-be relocators from making further long-term financial commitments such as moving to a better or bigger home. After all, it was hard to be positive about the future when your job might be on the line at any time. But there were other forces at work. And if the trend continues, we could be in for period not only of change in the housing market, but in the cultural make-up of the city. So don’t be surprised if your newly-arrived neighbours greet

you with a chirpy Gregg Wallace-style “Wotcher mate! Arrs it goin’ then?” That’s right, the Londoners are on the move. That pesky pandemic is to blame, again. For if all those months of lockdown taught us anything, it was that it’s perfectly possible to continue working efficiently and effectively by practically never setting foot in the office. Home working worked for us. Whether or not it is something beneficial to us for other reasons is not an argument for here. What isn’t in dispute is the simple maths of the issue. The average commute for Londoners is 74 minutes, much of that time spent standing on overcrowded trains. The fast service to London from Doncaster takes not significantly more, say 104 minutes. One senior executive told us how she quite easily arrives at her desk in London by 10am, something she does two or three times a week. She commented: “The core problem is our London-centric economy. If businesses in London moved out to other cities, where they would have cheaper running costs, for example lower rent, and a smaller wage bill (thanks to lower house prices and living costs) then it would give the capital breathing space. It would reduce the

LIVING demand on all infrastructure, transport included, and crucially, it would allow those working in London on a lower wage the opportunity to continue living there without being priced out of the housing market. It would also improve the economies of the provincial cities, like Sheffield and Doncaster.” It will be interesting to see whether the logic is persuasive Simon Barton Hunters to those thinking of moving as Estate Agents Bawtry we near 2022. As is stands, the gulf between Doncaster, with its average £167,000 house price and that of London, which stands at £599,000 remains a yawning gap. An influx of Londoners could only mean good news for those who stand to benefit most from rising house prices. Simon Barton of Hunters estate agents in Bawtry, feels the London factor is somewhat overplayed. But he is unequivocal about the current state of the market. “It is, in a word, bonkers. Prices are increasing at a rate not seen since the mad market of the eighties. As soon as a property comes up for sale, we will be inundated with inquiries. That’s the case at every price level. “The rises are being driven by one thing, and that’s shortage of supply. As to where it will end, it’s hard to say. But affordability has to come into it sooner or later.” Emily Bradford, of Blenheim Park Estates, echoed these sentiments: “We are now halfway through 2021, and what a

busy year it has been for the property industry! “The number of new clients that have registered with us this year has almost doubled from the previous year. What is interesting is a large number of purchasers are not from the local area, showing how much relocation to South Yorkshire is taking place. “Strong competition for properties across many parts of the city and surrounding areas has driven up prices, with some purchasers paying a premium well in excess of any tax saving provided by the stamp duty holiday. “Given the strength of demand being linked to the change in people’s circumstances and lifestyle priorities, we foresee a positive outlook for the market over the next months, even after the stamp duty holiday has finished.”

tepping off the train at King’s Cross you could sense almost immediately that London has not quite returned to ‘normal’. Regardless of the time of day you expect to walk into a packed concourse before hustling your way to the tube to get to wherever you need to go, but there was none of that. It was much more sedate, relaxed even. Of course this is not necessarily a bad thing and makes it a great time to explore the capital before the long haul flights begin to disembark onto its streets once again. A late morning tube ride to Covent Garden was both short and quiet and on, exiting the station, full of surprises. Again it was distinctly less busy and seems to have undergone a bit of a transformation since my last visit. The market is still the hub (the street performers are still there) but the streets around this seem to have been elevated to another level. Many of them have

been pedestrianised while garlands of flowers and lights suspended across these thoroughfares have added character and charm. Bars, restaurants and cafes now spill out on to walkways and squares to create a continental style atmosphere and with the addition of new shopping and dining areas such as The Yards and the Seven Dials Market, Covent Garden feels alive once again. The base for our short stay was just a stone’s throw from Covent Garden and is a landmark itself, being part of the London skyline for over 112 years and

steeped in history and heritage. Strand Palace has recently undergone a two-year multimillion-pound refurbishment that has seen the renovation of all 785 bedrooms, public areas, and a brand-new restaurant and bar refurbished with a modern art-deco inspired interior design. We stayed in two deluxe king rooms, linked by an adjoining door, which offered plenty of space for the four of us as well as comforts including Hypnos mattresses, air conditioning, free high speed wi-fi, Nespresso® coffee machine, complimentary fully stocked minibar and

large HD TV. It was the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the capital. Breakfast was included in our stay and was served each morning in the Haxells Restaurant & Bar. There was a good choice of hot and cold food as well as fruit juices, tea and coffee - my children particularly enjoyed the American-style pancakes lavishly smothered in maple syrup. Haxells is also open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with a passion for provenance and a focus on impeccably sourced, top-quality ingredients. The menu is full of modern British dishes such as the Haxells burger, superfood salad, Hawaiian salmon poke bowl and to finish, chocolate cake with honeycomb ice cream. As comfortable as it is inside, it’s the location that really sells Strand Palace with many of the capital’s world-famous sights and attractions, including St. Paul’s Cathedral,Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, and the River Thames, on its doorstep. You’re also in the heart of theatreland and Soho, home to some of the London’s hottest nightlife spots, is less

than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. We’d pre-booked tickets for the lastminute.com London Eye and made the most of the glorious weather with a gentle stroll through Trafalgar Square, St James Park and Parliament Square before crossing Westminster Bridge to its location on the Southbank. Entry was well organised (and safe) as you’d expect and after a short queue we climbed to a height of 135m for unrivalled views over the city. Each pod had limited numbers we shared with one other family - so there was plenty of room to distance but still enjoy the sights without getting in each other’s way. After hitting the heights we enjoyed a long stroll down the Southbank, which has developed into a real foodie destination. There are shipping containers, vans and trucks, all with plenty of seating and all serving food and drink, as well as recognised restaurants and cafes. Gabriel’s Wharf, just next to the OXO building, even had a beach bar. We walked on to the Tate Modern before crossing the Thames to St Paul’s Cathedral and back along Fleet

Street and The Strand, via Somerset House, to the hotel. During our stay we also visited the British Museum and the National Gallery, which are both free to enter but, due to Covid restrictions, tickets must be booked in advance. The former, again a short walk from the hotel, is home to two million years of world history and culture and is worth the admission alone for the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, the largest covered square in Europe. Our whistlestop tour of the National Gallery took in paintings from the likes of Johannes Vermeer, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh amongst others. No trip to London is complete without a spot of shopping; Oxford Street and Regent Street cover all bases and were some of the busiest places we visited but again Covent Garden, and particularly the area around Seven Dials, came out on top with a good selection of independent stores as well as some well known high street favourites. On the evidence of this visit, it shows that the return to ‘normal’ is definitely well on it’s way; after almost 18 months of Covid restrictions, our recent family trip was one of our first opportunities to get away and I’ll be honest, it felt fantastic. Prices at the Strand Palace Hotel start from £106 per room, per night.
