No filler, all Weller NEVER ONE TO REST ON HIS LAURELS OR REPEAT HIMSELF, PAUL WELLER IS BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM AND TOUR. HE SPEAKS TO JULES BOYLE ABOUT FAT POP (VOLUME 1). here are not many artists who are still making vibrant and relevant music over four decades into their career, but Paul Weller has always done things differently. Since he first burst into the national consciousness with The Jam in 1977, up through The Style Council and beyond with his prolific solo endeavours, the 62 year-old Englishman has always been about one thing – moving forward. Never one to rest on his laurels or repeat himself, Weller somehow has managed to keep producing new material that holds its own with his ever-increasing back catalogue of classic albums while always exploring new ideas at the same time. It’s no surprise then, that he’s back with another new record that does just that, the incredible Fat Pop (Volume 1). His 16th solo album since his self-titled debut dropped way back in 1992, it comes less than a year after its predecessor, the equally astonishing On Sunset, which earned him his fifth

Number One album as a solo artist. It’s a typically diverse collection of songs, taking in influences and inspirations from across the board, but with every track sounding unmistakably like nobody else other than Paul Weller. As usual too, his quality control is as strong as ever too. There’s no waste on the album, no offcuts making up the runtime. No filler, all Weller in other words. Even by his standards, it’s been a quick turnaround since the last album but it’s a record he had already started planning that was just moved forward when lockdown kicked in last year. As far as he saw it, if you can’t get out and play music, what else is there to do than make some more? Looking back at the genesis of what became Fat Pop (Volume 1), Paul said: “Most things become more apparent when you’re working on a record, so I don’t think I had any masterplan for it, I just wanted to make a record as I was

facing a whole year or more of not doing anything, as all the live stuff had been cancelled obviously. The prospect of all that time off meant I was going to have to utilise my time in other ways, so I just put my time and energy into making a record. There was nothing particularly challenging in there though, just what are in my opinion, 12 really great songs.” The initial parts of the album were recorded remotely by Weller and his band - Steve Cradock, Ben Gordelier and Andy Crofts - with the musicians trading files from each of their respective homes and only came together at Paul’s Black Barn studio in Surrey when restrictions were lifted. It wasn’t an ideal way to do things, but they made it work. Paul said: “In the first bit of the lockdown, I was just recording my vocal and a guitar or piano to a click track, then I’d send that to the various band members who’d do their part and send it back to me, so there was a bit of to-ing

015 ESide July21 17/06/2021 09:35 Page 1

INTERVIEW

and fro-ing for a while, until we could all get together, It was very weird, I wouldn’t say it was completely enjoyable as little things kept coming back that we could have easily fixed if we were all together, but it did enable us to keep moving forward and stay working. Getting back together in person though, that was really special. I would say it was like the first day of school, but I hated school, so it was more like the last day, just a real f***ing joy. Just having us all back in the same room again, having a bit of banter and playing some music together. We’d really missed it; we’d missed each other, and we’d missed playing together.” A new Weller album isn’t ever something you can predict what it’s going to sound like, which is just how he likes it. He makes music that interests him and that he wants to be proud to let people hear. With a back catalogue and reputation like his, he could easily go down the heritage act route if he wanted to and just churn out the hits for the rest of his life, but that’s just not how he’s wired. Paul said: “I just wanted every song to be strong on its own, like each one could be a single. I’m always just trying to keep my own interest and not repeat myself, which when you have been recording music as long as I have, can be difficult. In fact, it’s next to impossible to always come up with something different, but I’m always conscious of trying to reach somewhere else or get to some other place with it. So, for me, having two or three moments on each record that I’ve managed to do that, then it’s successful for me. “I couldn’t do that heritage route easily, not with any sort of conviction at all. I’m just not cut out for that sort of thing. I’ve always been more interested in what I’m doing at the time and what I’m doing next and that goes right back to The Jam days, you know? My attitude has always been ‘Well that was a good record, let’s crack on with the next one and try and make something a bit different.’ That’s always been in me, but I think the older I get, the less cautious I am about trying different things or seeing what works. There was a similar ethos in The Style Council, I just don’t think I had the chops to bring it off successfully at times, either vocally or as a musician. It’s just the passage of time, really. “I’ve always felt comfortable about making new stuff though, if that’s what

I’m into at the time, then that’s what I want people to hear. That’s what I want to play to you, so that’s what I do. Saying that, there’s also loads of old songs that I play live, whether it’s the ones that people want to hear, I don’t know. People want all different things, but I do try to cover most points in my history, but the new record will always be the most important thing to me. Unless it’s a piece of sh*t, then I wouldn’t care, but if that was the case I wouldn’t be out there doing it anyway. If I believe in something though, I want people to hear it.”

Fat Pop (Volume 1) features some stellar guest collaborations, such as Amen Corner legend Andy Fairweather Low on the strutting groove that is Testify and Paul’s own daughter Leah, who co-wrote and performed on Shades Of Blue, the classic slice of three-minute kitchen sink pop that was the first single released off the album. Away from his recorded output, Weller has been a constant presence on the live circuit all these years, but his usually relentless touring schedule ground to a halt last year along with the entire live music industry. Naturally his first concern was people’s lives and health, but not being able to do the thing that he has spent his entire adult life doing (and loving) took a bit of getting used to. He said: “It’s really, really weird. It’s the longest I’ve gone without playing live since I started making music. We’re hopefully doing this tour in November, which has been rescheduled several times already, which will make it nearly twoand-a-half years since we’ve played live. That’s an awful long time to be off.” For the latest news on tour dates see www.paulweller.com

Conserving history BRODSWORTH HALL AND GARDENS IS NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND CHANGES HAVE BEEN AFOOT. RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT THE RECENT IMPROVEMENTS AND GETS A GLIMPSE OF VICTORIAN LIFE IN DONCASTER. Photography: © English Heritage

ith the summer holidays approaching, no doubt you’re looking for things to do to either entertain yourself, or your children. Brodsworth Hall and gardens offers an oasis of calm just outside Doncaster with culture, history and outdoor space in abundance. You can catch a glimpse of Victorian life at the hall, which was built between 1861 and 1863 for Charles Sabine Thellusson. It survives as a mid-Victorian vision of a comfortable country house with many of its original furnishings an the formal gardens laid out around it. However, Brodsworth had fallen into disrepair by 1990 when it was given to English Heritage. Since then its fragile interiors have been gently conserved, while the gardens have been returned to their early formality. Recent changes have seen the Target House and intriguing Eyecatcher feature restored, after a year-long conservation effort by English Heritage. The historic rose garden has also been carefully restored and is now open for the public to enjoy. With its Swiss-style overhanging roof and Venetian window, the Target House, originally built in 1866 as the Archery House, was a place of rest and relaxation for the Thellusson family (whose ancestor Peter Thellusson had purchased the estate in 1791), to shelter in the heat of the day and enjoy refreshments during archery practice. Archery on the Target Range would have been a social occasion, with the family inviting their friends to visit for an afternoon tournament. However, its purpose changed during the Second World War when the hall was requisitioned by the Army and soldiers would use the long range nearby for target practice, hence the change in name.

Target House

English Heritage has taken steps to secure the future of this notable building and vital repairs include replacing missing or rotten timber posts, replacing roof slates, repointing the stonework and re-plastering the interior where visitors will be able to step inside and find out more in the brand new exhibition. Also conserved was the Victorian Eyecatcher, a folly built in the same year probably using stone from the demolished old Brodsworth Hall. A deliberately ruinous garden feature, it is designed to draw the eye along the long expanse of grass across from the Target House nearby. Built on an artificial mound set into the quarry face, the Eyecatcher is a façade with a central blind doorway between two blind windows. It too has received a new lease of life with repointed masonry and Brodsworth’s garden team have carefully re-instated its original surrounding planting with 1,000 British native ferns, greatly adding to the important collection of rare ferns on site. Alongside this important conversation work, Brodsworth’s rose garden has also been restored to its original Victorian design, with over 200 roses including heritage, shrub, ramblers and climbing varieties which would have been familiar to the Thellusson family in the 19th century. Eleanor Matthews, English Heritage’s Curator at Brodsworth Hall, said: “It’s been brilliant to be able to see the Target House come to life after the careful conservation work to secure its future. Archery was one of the few sports in 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

which Victorian women were allowed to compete and the family would have spent a lot of time there to socialise so it’s great to share these stories with visitors in the new exhibition. “The Target House was in many ways a house in its own right and records of furnishings in the 1880s include a table and two armchairs, a cast iron fender and set of fire irons, a chimney glass (mirror), and a carpet. It certainly puts many modern garden sheds to shame! I’m delighted that the Target House will now be open for everyone to enjoy.” Dan Hale, English Heritage’s head gardener at Brodsworth Hall, said: “We’ve put a lot of time into investigative work looking at historical records and making sure that we follow the original bedding plans for the Target Range and the rose garden. We were very lucky in that we were able to look to historic photographs which revealed the historic planting schemes, enabling us to recreate the garden with accuracy. “With 1,000 British native ferns planted around the Eyecatcher and roses which would have been popular during the Victorian period in bloom, walking through the range is now like looking through a little window into the past.” There is a much longer history to Brodsworth than the Victorian house and gardens might suggest. The house and village lie on a broad limestone ridge, a fertile area in which there have been settlements since the Iron Age. Running along the ridge is a major route north used by the Romans, whose garrison nearby developed to become Doncaster.

Land farmed around the adjacent villages of Brodsworth and Pickburn was transferred into Norman ownership in 1086. A manor at Brodsworth was owned from the 12th to 16th centuries by the Darrell and Dawnay families. This was acquired by the Wentworth family in the 17th century, one of whom, Darcy Wentworth of Brodsworth, became embroiled in the Civil War on the Parliamentarian side. The exact size and site of the manor house of this period are not known. It may have been incorporated into the 18th-century house near the church of St Michael and All Angels. Evidence of a deserted medieval village has also been found to the east of the church. The Brodsworth estate was bought in 1791 by Peter Thellusson, who came from a family long established in European commerce. Originally French Huguenots (Protestants), they were later Swiss merchants and financiers. Peter Thellusson settled in England in 1760, acting as an agent for the family and other banks. His activities included providing loans and insurance to slaveship and plantation owners, and as a result of defaults on debts he gained interests in Caribbean plantations. Peter died in 1797 and is best known for his will in which he left the bulk of his fortune in trust for as yet unborn descendants. The protracted legal battles between family members which followed – and from which the lawyers and trustees seemed to benefit most – may have been one of the examples that inspired the labyrinthine case of Jarndyce

v Jarndyce in Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. The effect of the will for Brodsworth was that the estate was managed and enjoyed mainly by the trustees, probably with little investment in the house, for half a century. This may have been one of the reasons for the drastic changes undertaken by the next member of the Thellusson family to own Brodsworth. After a legal judgment in 1858 the inheritance was finally divided the next year between two of Peter Thellusson’s great-grandsons. Frederick, 4th Lord Rendlesham, received the estate in Suffolk and remaining Caribbean property, while Charles Sabine Thellusson (1822–85) was granted the Brodsworth estate. After Charles Sabine Thellusson died in 1885 each of his four sons inherited Brodsworth in turn. With falling agricultural income, it became increasingly difficult to maintain the house, which remained relatively unchanged. In 1931 Brodsworth was inherited by Charles Grant-Dalton, the son of Charles Sabine Thellusson’s daughter Constance. Charles, his wife, Sylvia, and their 12year-old daughter, Pamela, came to live at Brodsworth. By this time the house and estate were badly in need of investment, but economic depression and death duties ruled that out. They made the Victorian house more habitable and manageable, however, with ever fewer servants, by closing some rooms, brightening others with a lick of plain paint, and introducing a few

modernisations such as a lift and an Aga cooker. After her husband’s death in 1952 Sylvia Grant-Dalton remained at the hall for over 30 years.Widowed for a second time in 1970, she lived alone at Brodsworth, with eventually only one member of staff, until her death in 1988. Brodsworth then faced an uncertain future but a solution was reached in 1990 when Mrs Williams gave the house and gardens to English Heritage. Almost all the contents were bought by the National Heritage Memorial Fund and transferred to English Heritage, which undertook to open Brodsworth to the public. Major work was required to make the house safe and bring the overgrown gardens under control before Brodsworth opened in 1995. Its stonework and leaking roof were repaired and new services installed. Inside it was decided to conserve the interiors as far as possible as they were found, to preserve both what had survived of its original schemes and the distinctive character Brodsworth had gained from its later

history and inhabitants. You can now bring your family to appreciate the grandeur of Victorian living, taking a unique guided tour around the house which has been preserved exactly as the last resident, Sylvia Grant-Dalton, left it in 1988. Spectacularly restored to their full Victorian splendour, the gardens are home to a collection of grand gardens in miniature, filled with colourful seasonal plantings and displays. Stroll through the statue walks, the fern dell grotto and the beautiful wild rose dell. Take in romantic views of the formal gardens and pleasure grounds from the restored summerhouse, and enjoy the period bedding plants in the Flower Garden. Getting back to nature OPEN WATER, OR WILD, SWIMMING IS GREAT FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND GENERAL WELLBEING. LUCY JAMES LOOKS AT ITS INCREASING POPULARITY AND SOME LOCAL SPOTS TO GET STARTED. Words: Lucy James Selected photography: Mark Kleanthous

our first open water swim can be a real shock to the system. You may be dressed to the nines and have mentally prepared yourself for what you are about to undertake but when you take those first steps into a seemingly infinite expanse of ice cold water, your breath will literally be taken away. So why do people do it? Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of open water swimming with the lockdowns leading to many people across the UK participating in the sport, largely because swimming pools had been closed. A report published by Outdoor Swimmer in January, showed that 45 per cent of swimmers increased their amount of time swimming outdoors in 2020 alone, with 20 per cent of those starting the sport to improve their mental health and general wellbeing, and when the pools reopened, only two per cent of swimmers stopped open water swimming and went back into the indoor pools. Open water swimming has an abundance of health benefits, so it is no wonder why so many people have taken to their local waters, especially at this very difficult time. From getting fit to trying something new or getting closer to nature, people all over

Y

the country are taking the leap into the cold and it seems like the sport is only becoming more popular. Mark Kleanthous is an open water swimming coach working with all ages across the country. With 39 years of open water swimming experience, he said he began open water swimming after having a fear of water as a child. “I could not swim at school, I learnt to swim to complete a triathlon… I have competed in 525 triathlons in 39 consecutive years!” he proudly told me in an interview. “My first experience was petrifying; the cold water took my breath away; I thought I was going to die; then I soon realised I had survived the scary moment and started with a form of breaststroke which I did not know I could do, having never done breaststroke before.” Mark noticed the health benefits of open water swimming early on in his career. “Swimming in nature is my me time and my escape, not being bombarded by the internet and the frenetic fast pace of life and the instant demands the world now expects of each and everyone. I consider myself a positive person but when life gets in the way, when you feel you are on life’s treadmill that is going too fast, open water

swimming simply is being back with nature and is a reality check and slows down my speedy, busy mind… it’s my moving mediation,” he explains. “I like to vary my breathing pattern whilst swimming, slow and controlled in and out of mouth, or in and out of my nose. It certainly helps with my quality of sleep.” Not only is it relaxing and good for the mind, but Mark also feels proud of himself after a swim, saying he enjoys “the sound of my hands splashing and the sense of achievement as I glide through the water, passing by bushes and trees and looking back to see how far I have travelled.” Throughout Mark’s time as a swimming coach, he has come face to face with a wide range of wildlife from fish and seals to minks and warns swimmers to respect that they are swimming in their habitats. “I’ve been chased by an adult mink after its young followed me when swimming in a canal and another time, my body was covered with neoprene and the only part of me exposed to the cold water was my feet, imagine my shock when a crayfish started snapping on my toes – the only piece of my skin exposed!” he laughed.

Mark Kleanthous is an open water swimming coach

Swimming safely With a life dedicated to open water swimming, Mark has shared some of his advice to those wanting to start the sport. “Your first introduction to open water swimming should be with an open water swim coach, or an experienced open water swimmer,” he said .”Learn how to relax your breathing before getting out of your depth, then learn to float on your back. Inexperienced swimmers shouldn’t swim in open water with low energy levels or when they’re under a lot of stress as the cold water can heighten anxiety and create more stress rather than reduce it.” To stay safe, open water swimmers suggest that those looking to begin the sport, seek local swimming groups; Sheffield has three main groups which cover outdoor swimming:Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers, Sheffield Triathlon Club and Sheffield Outdoor Plungers. Other open water swimmer’s safety tips include: 22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

• Get to know the area and the condition of the water before swimming • Go fully equipped (waterproof bag for phone and car keys, energy bar, whistle, swim cap, tinted and anti-fog goggles, towels, float)

Mark and friends, Matt and Helen

• Avoid swimming alone, or let know someone know where you are and when you should be home, • Follow any signs; no swimming means it could be dangerous and, • Be prepared for the cold.

Where to swim With many options being just minutes away by car, and easily accessed by public transport, here are three of the safest outdoor swimming spots that are just a stone’s splash away from your doorstep.

Harthill Reservoir Located on the outskirts of the city and close to Rotherham, Harthill Reservoir is both, a local and safe place to swim. The site is even the home to the Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers club which allows swimmers from the age of nine years old, to swim safely, and all year round. As well as going for a swim, Harthill reservoir’s location offers a walk around the two lakes, and the countryside surrounding the area which offers a beautiful woodland and an abundance of

wildlife for those wanting to get that step closer to nature.

Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre Just a 15 minute drive away from Doncaster’s town centre sits Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre. The centre offers a whole range of water, and landbased activities including open water swimming. Hatfield has a 200m and 800m swim course, and they allow swimmers who can demonstrate their competence in the water to swim with there by completing a test route before being allowed on the longer of the courses. The centre is the base for Swim You Swim, an open water swimming club and coaching for anyone over the age of eight, as long as they have a good swimming technique are accompanied by a strong swimming guardian.

Hoveringham Lake If you fancy pushing the boat out and going a further afield, Hoveringham Lake in Nottinghamshire is a tranquil and spacious place for a safe swim. The lake is situated amongst a beautiful countryside setting, with stunning greenery views from every point of the lake. The Nottingham Open Water Swimming team run safe sessions in the lake, and it is even the home to Nottingham Sailing Club. *** With such a diverse range of swimming locations in Sheffield, there is something for everyone, but before diving in, be sure to read up on open water swimming beforehand to make your open water swimming experiences safe ones.

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

A community for life THE WARMTH, WELCOME AND SUPPORTIVE NATURE OF THE QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COMMUNITY LASTS LONG BEYOND THE TIME SPENT ON CAMPUS. s another school year starts to draw to a close, the Queen Ethelburga’s community is filled with the positive chatter of celebrating successes, students reminiscing over the memories made here and sharing excitement over the next steps being taken in the pathways to their future. One of QE’s core aims is to create a safe, happy and caring community in which students take pride in their endeavour and thrive, both mentally and physically. The school’s academic results speak for themselves but they are also set apart by the warmth, welcome and supportive nature of the community, lasting long beyond the time spent on campus, and as final year students leave them to officially become ‘Old Ethelburgians’. At QE, there are a number of memorable traditions. These have remained firm favourites of students, such as the annual school ghost production, celebrating QE’s birthday, battling it out in the annual school quiz and singing carols round the huge Christmas tree outside Thorpe Underwood Hall before sitting down for Christmas dinner. QE traditions bring students together from one generation to the next, uniting them in a common heritage and shared memories. Blending these traditions and family values with modern facilities and a

A

global outlook is central to the QE approach. The school welcomes girls and boys from three months and support them through four schools – Chapter House, King’s Magna, The College and The Faculty – to become successful independent adults who are well prepared for the future. QE students are without doubt their finest ambassadors. The Collegiate mission, the Hill Standard, is for all members of the community ‘to be the best that they can with the gifts that they have.’ QE are

delighted to be once again offering socially-distanced in-person campus tours to prospective families and, combined with a new range of online webinars, they can ensure that all families have a clear insight into how their child can flourish, and achieve their full potential, as part of the community at QE. The Queen Ethelburga’s Admissions Team can provide further information and help arrange a visit to see for yourself what makes them so special.Visit www.qe.org or email admissions@qe.org

Electric dreams THE NATURE OF MOTORING IS MOVING UP A GEAR – ERIC STEAD MG IS ALREADY OFFERING A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE. magine, just for a few minutes, that your time machine has propelled you from the late 1980s to the present day. First things first, you’d best call home to let them know you’ll be late for tea by about 35 years. Problem is, you can’t see a red phone box anywhere. Instead, everybody carries around a small device that will fit in the palm of your hand. But, thanks to something called the internet, it can be used for everything from ordering your shopping (for delivery to your door, of course) to finding the best place near you for a course of Swahili lessons. And even for buying a car. It just so happens that here in 2021 we are about to see the biggest revolution in transport since the invention of the

internal combustion engine. In nine years from now, electric cars will be the only story in town – because all cars will have to be made that way. The manufacturers have not been slow to react. All the big names in the business are gearing up for the day of reckoning and some already have models on the market. But, much as we all want to save the planet, what of the traditional weaknesses of electric cars? Early attempts at using clean power concluded that the concept was a long way from winning recognition as a practical alternative to the typical family car. Performance was an issue. That was then, but now even Ferrari have launched a hybrid model, and word from

the prancing horses’s mouth has it that an all-electric version will not be long in coming. But above all, the big concern among potential buyers was range. Longer journeys had to be planned carefully to ensure the vital – but scarce – charging points. Things have certainly changed on that front, according to our man in the know, Simon Stead of MG dealers Eric Stead Sheffield. Take their SUV, the MG ZS EV, for example. With a 163-mile range, it has enough in the ‘tank’ to reach central London from Sheffield. Or it takes only 40 minutes at the motorway services to charge up. Or if you’re in the market for an estate car, the MG5 EV delivers a whopping 214-mille range.

MOTORING

MG ZS EV

“When you look at the relative running costs between a conventional and an electric car, the electric car will cost about £40 [per month] to run. This compares to £140 for the petrol engine,” says Simon. He points out that servicing costs are dramatically reduced. Throw in the zero car tax and the proposition looks very different. Driving one of these cars for the first time takes a little getting used to. For a start there is no engine noise, Only a faint whoosh as you glide along the road surface. How many speeds does the gearbox have? Answer, one of course. There are no gear changes, just the steady hum of the motor, which in turn makes for a very smooth ride. There are no sudden lurches as you change up or down, just consistent forward propulsion that seems effortless and, dare I say it, easy. Performance? Well that’s pretty

impressive too. Both models have plenty of poke, in particular the MG5 EV, which is not by any means embarrassed by conventional cars. You could really feel the extra power provided by the larger capacity battery which made for a much more engaging driving experience. Reversing is made easier with a rear parking camera and sensors. Apart from the motor, there is loads of state-of-the-art technology in each of the cars such as regenerative brakes and a collision avoidance system which brakes automatically if you get too close to the car in front. The dashboard and central console is unfussy with everything in easy reach and, more importantly, straightforward to use. Satellite navigation is included and there’s DAB radio as well as compatibility with both Apple and Android mobile devices. MG are so confident of the product that they even give a seven-year warranty with it.
