From South America to Doncaster WITH NEW ANIMALS, A NEW RESERVE AND NEW RETAIL OUTLET, IT’S BEEN ALL CHANGE FOR THE YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK. ince opening in 2009, Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) has been a wonderful addition to the Doncaster area, offering a fantastic day out for the whole family. Over the last 12 years it has continued to grow and now counts over 400 animals and over 70 species of animals as its residents. And it continues to evolve. Having re-opened to the public on 12 April, the park in Branton, Doncaster, now has new animals, a new reserve and a new purpose-built entrance, the first phase of a new visitor complex that contains the Yorkshire Hive, a new leisure shopping offer that’s free to enter.

Once you enter the park, you will be able to explore the new Atlantic Forest reserve, which is home to a pair of recently arrived lowland tapir, maned wolves and a pack of bush dogs. This is the first of three reserves set to open this year as part of the Park’s expansion project. These three species are all found in the threatened habitat of the Atlantic Forest in South America. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation charity works with the conservation organisation WildCare in Misiones, Argentina helping protect and create wildlife corridors for the animals that live in the Atlantic Forest. Chief Executive John Minion is delighted to be taking the major step in the next phase for Yorkshire Wildlife Park. “So much has changed, from our new entrance to our new arrivals in Atlantic Forest,” he said. “We have been planning the expansion for several years 12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
now, so to be taking the first step of opening the new entrance and the first new reserve Atlantic Forest is amazing. This is only a small part of our plans for the next few years so watch this space and as restrictions lift over the coming months, we will be opening more exciting new developments.” The new Atlantic Forest reserve is approximately 5,500 sq m (1.36 acres). An existing mature tree line is enhanced by further native trees and
under storey planting providing a sensitively created ecological corridor for the park’s own native wildlife, much like the conservation efforts in the Atlantic Forest known as “forest corridors”. The tree lines also provide natural shade for the Atlantic Forest inhabitants. Each of the reserves within the Atlantic Forest includes a body of water replicating the moist tropical forest which is the major habitat type within the Atlantic Forest and enough space to allow animals to play and swim. Within the reserves are over 6,000 newly planted trees, shrubs, herbaceous, bamboo, ferns, marginal, aquatic, grasses and perennial plants which when grown up are intended to emulate the wetland habitats of the Atlantic Forest. “We are delighted how the new animals are settling in,” said Animal Manager Rick Newton. “It is fascinating to have three very different species as

part of the new reserve, and I am sure that visitors will be excited to see them. The bush dogs are particularly active and inquisitive, I am sure they will become big favourites here.” Second only to the Amazon as a biodiversity hotspot, the Atlantic Forest stretches along the Atlantic coast of Brazil, then inland to northeast Argentina and eastern Paraguay. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Sadly, the Forest is declining. Of the 1,000,000km2 (386,000sq miles) of original Atlantic Forest, just seven now remains and the remaining forest is highly fragmented. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation is supporting conservation organisation WildCare’s project in Misiones, Argentina to protect and restore wildlife corridors that are vital for species survival. The maned wolf is the most striking of the new arrivals. Having evolved to live in high grass savannahs, the long-
legged maned wolves have a thick red coat, distinctive black markings and tall, erect ears.YWP’s new residents are Ibera, a two-year-old female who has come from Nuremburg Zoo in Germany and Axenus, a four-year-old male from Paignton Zoo. Matilda and Luna, the two female Lowland tapir aged three and four respectively, are settling in well and are sure to become firm favourites with rangers and visitors alike. The third species to arrive in the Atlantic Forest is the active and curious bush dog. Tiny Tim, the new resident male, has been very recently joined by three females. They live and hunt in small family packs. The new entrance toYorkshire Wildlife Park is off Hurst Lane, near to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the new postcode for satnav is DN9 3QY.
The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation was created by Cheryl Williams in 2013 to be a dynamic catalyst for inspiring people to support conservation and welfare. In 2009 Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened for the first time. But the Park leapt to the forefront of the nation’s awareness with the rescue of 13 lions from poor conditions in a run-down zoo in Romania. After a major fundraising drive, the lions were successfully brought back to Yorkshire and made their home here in Lion Country. It was after this that the Directors of Yorkshire Wildlife Park decided to create a charity, The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation. This independent charity would mirror the core values of Yorkshire Wildlife Park of welfare, education and conservation but carry this work out on the international stage working with partners and organisations worldwide. Since that start in 2013, the Foundation has gone from strength to strength, funding projects on every continent so far except Antarctica. In 2020, with your support the Foundation will support more projects and hopes to run its own project for the first time in Madagascar, in conjunction with the knowledge and support of the amazing team at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. In a short space of time, the Foundation has made a big difference in raising awareness for conservation and welfare around the world and making the world a better place for wild animals.

Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park. Taking place over the weekend of 2325 July, the festival has named its first wave of acts – with many to follow. Headliners have been revealed as The Streets, Royal Blood and Richard Ashcroft who will be supported by over 40 more acts including The Kooks, DMA’s, Pale Waves, Little Simz, The
Pigeon Detectives, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mahalia, Everything Everything, Jake Bugg, Blossoms, The Sherlocks, Dizzee Rascal, Tom Walker, The Fratellis, Sundara Karma and more. launched as a free, multi-venue, innercity festival, Tramlines is now a firm fixture on the UK festival circuit receiving many accolades including the UK Festival Award for Best Metropolitan Festival in 2019 and 2011. In keeping with the last two events, Tramlines Festival 2021 takes place in one greenfield site, Hillsborough Park, just a few miles North West of Sheffield city centre and will feature five stages of music, comedy, performance, art, and handpicked food and craft ales. The Friday night headliner on ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ will be The Streets whose enigmatic frontman, Mike Skinner has performed exclusive DJ sets for

Tramlines in the past but performs live for the first time providing a perfect start to the weekend’s festivities. Brit Award winning rock duo, Royal Blood are the Saturday headliners, hot on the heels of their third LP, ‘Typhoons’ whilst former Verve frontman, Richard Ashcroft takes the prestigious Sunday night slot. Tramlines Festival Operations Director, Timm Cleasby said: “The pandemic has hit us all very hard in a million different ways but the support that Sheffield has already shown us is incredibly humbling for us all. We’re super excited to bring you what I feel is one of our strongest line ups. The three main headliners have been on my list for a good while now and we’ve got some brilliant returning friends as well. All this said, we’re very serious about the public’s safety and take our responsibilities regarding COVID very seriously. We’re keeping a close eye on developments and will act accordingly should things change.” The 2021 lineup for Tramlines is packed with some of the UK’s all-time rock and indie favourites. Appearing are poster boys of the noughties indie wave scene, The Kooks, ‘Chelsea Dagger’ indie swingers The Fratellis, the platinum selling The Pigeon Detectives, and Blossoms who were inspired by Manchester’s indie rock movement. Also appearing will be The Snuts who’s debut indie rock LP, ‘W.L.’ was launched in April 2021 and shot straight to number 1 in the charts. Adding an international injection to the rock offering are, from Sydney down under, the DMA’s who’ll bring rock ballads aplenty. Also taking to the mic over the weekend is Little Simz, a furiously talented rapper hotly tipped by Dizzee, whose trademark uncompromising style will light up the stage on Saturday. As ever, Tramlines welcomes a slew of talent from across its home city and the Yorkshire regions. The ever popular fourpiece The Sherlocks join the bill whose impressive credits include being the first unsigned band after the Arctic Monkeys to sell out the legendary independent venue, the Leadmill. Other local and upcoming acts include Biig Piig, Before Breakfast and Bloxx. This is just the first wave of talent set to perform at Tramlines 2021. Festivalgoers should keep an eye out for further lineup announcements, plus further announcements from across the festival site including, comedy and cabaret entertainment, fabulous food and drink offerings and much much more. The Ultimate indulgence MARK THE RETURN TO ‘NORMAL’ LIFE WITH A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER. ou could almost hear the creaking of the trapdoors as they were cautiously raised by those sheltering within. “Could it really be over?” were the words on everyone’s lips as they emerged into daylight, blinking at the glare. It was true. Now everyone could get down to the gym and hone that waistline expanded by endless takeaways, have the

That, at least, was the scenario envisaged by the newspapers, nearly all of whom ran special features along the lines of the Top 25 things to do after lockdown. If there is anything good to emerge from the pandemic, it is that it forced us
all to look again at the way we spend our leisure time. If you really are waiting on the starting blocks for the pub to open, or yearning for hairdresser-talk once again. (“Are you booked on yer holidays yet”?) then who are we to argue otherwise. But if you are looking to mark the return to normal life with a weekend to remember, here are a few suggestions.

The future’s bright SMALL WORLD TRAVEL SHORTLISTED BY LUXURY TRAVEL BRAND. uxury tour operator Carrier has revealed the names on The Carrier 30 | The most inspiring and influential in luxury travel 2021 – naming luxury travel agency, Small World Travel as a ‘Future Retailer’. The launch of The Carrier 30 comes after one of the most challenging times the travel industry has seen with a year of cancellations, amendments, refunds and suppressed sales. In lieu of Carrier’s glitzy award ceremony that usually takes place at this time of the year, recognising their top trade agent partners based on sales performance, the list acknowledges the people and businesses in the sector that they believe should be recognised for their achievements. Carrier head of sales, Rick Milne commented: “Our annual awards ceremony is one of our most anticipated events, and of course this year it won’t be going ahead in the usual way. Whilst the past year has been extremely difficult, it has shown the importance of exceptional service and trusted partnerships. It has shown value in businesses who take a human approach and put their customers and staff first, and for us, it is vital that we celebrate
L
these people and businesses, who despite the challenges of 2020, have continued to deliver outstanding levels of service and support to their clients.” During the unprecedented closure of the Small World Travel office, the team had to find other ways to successfully engage with their clients and community. Paul Rhodes of Small World Travel said: “We’ve used our retail space creatively to communicate messages to the local community that highlight the strengths of using Small World Travel. We’ve also spent time developing our social media presence, posting regular updates and much needed inspiration.” The Carrier 30 is comprised of five categories: The Luminaries, The Connoisseurs, The Innovators, The Future Retailers, and The Rising Stars. Chosen by a panel at Carrier using set criteria, Small World Travel is named in The Future Retailers category which Carrier describe as ‘the retail travel brands who are redefining the retail experience for their customers. These businesses have prominent locations in upscale neighbourhoods with innovative store design.’ Rick Milne continued: “Small World
Travel is a truly unique travel agency. Started over 35 years ago, this is a family business that has evolved from a traditional village agency to South Yorkshire’s leading luxury travel business. Their recently refurbished retail space is quite simply stunning and with such a focus on service, it’s easy to see why Yorkshires Elite trust Paul and his team with their travel arrangements.” Paul Rhodes added: “The team and I are delighted and extremely proud to be selected for such an accolade. Especially as the recognition is coming from a such a well-respected brand as Carrier.” Small World Travel 9 Saint Mary’s Court, Tickhill, Doncaster, DN11 9LX Tel: 01302 742139 www.smallworldtravel.co.uk

Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Injury Specialists
Ankle Arthritis Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative or "wear-andtear" arthritis, is a common problem for many people after they reach middle age, but it may occur in younger people, too. Arthritis in the ankle may also develop in after an injury to the ankle known as posttraumatic arthritis. Like osteoarthritis, posttraumatic arthritis causes the cartilage between the joints to wear away and can develop many years after the initial injury. You will experience pain, swelling, limited movements and difficulty in walking.
Management of Ankle Arthritis: The management of an ankle arthritis usually begins with modification of life style, antiinflammatory medications and pain management. Ankle braces and walking stick will help cope with the pain and symptoms. Failing this a steroid injection may be given into the joint. When these measures are no longer successful, surgery may be indicated. Surgical treatment options range from minimally invasive surgery up to and including an ankle replacement or ankle arthrodesis. The choice between which operation is better for you is often down to personal preference and the surgeon. Key-hole surgery (Ankle Arthroscopy) This is suitable in early stages of arthritis where bone or loose cartilage is blocking the ankle movements. It can lead to less pain and improve some range of motion in ankle joint. It relieves mechanical symptoms in the joint. The procedure is carried out under an anaesthetic as a day case. Tiny incisions are made in front of the ankle joint. Using a telescope and tiny instruments, the ankle is cleaned off all loose cartilage, bony spurs and
loose bodies. The joint is given a thorough clean out. Full weight bearing is generally allowed after the procedure. Ankle joint Fusion (Arthrodesis) This is an effective operation for pain relief and is suitable for those who are young and relatively very active. This takes away the movement and pain from the joint. This surgical procedure is usually performed with a keyhole (arthroscopic). The damaged and worn out cartilage is removed and the joint is then held in place with few screws. The bone fuses together in time. As many patients have already lost their movements due to end stage arthritis, the loss in ankle movements isn’t a concern. Little movement still remain from a joint adjacent to ankle. A period of immobilisation in plaster cast follows the procedure followed by a walking boot. Most patients with successful ankle fusion are able to walk without a limp, cycle and even run and play golf and other sports. Total Ankle Joint Replacement (Ankle Arthroplasty) Over the last 15 years, the ankle replacement have gained popularity. The current generation implants have resulted in improved outcome and better survivorship. In cases where there is significant arthritis affecting several joints in the foot or previous surgery where other joints have been fused a replacement may be advantageous. The joint surfaces are replaced with metal and plastic (very similar to hip and knee replacements). This gives excellent pain relief, preserves movements and give good function-but like any other joint replacement they can wear out. The ankle replacements are therefore ideal for low demand, relatively less active individuals. After the operation you have a plaster cast until the stitches are removed and wound has healed. After this a walking boot till you regain strength in ankle. Other surgical procedures: Joint re-alignment surgery and distraction arthrolysis are considered depending on the type of ankle arthritis and associated deformities.

Bunions
(Hallux Valgus)
Bunions are often thought of a simple bump on the side of the big toe caused by ill-fitting footwear, so largely “selfinflicted”. This is however a myth. Whilst ill-fitting footwear, tight shoes and high heels may irritate an enlarged joint and lead to soft tissue swelling, the underlying bony deformity is generally thought to be inherited. The condition involves changes in the alignment of the big toe and metatarsal, which is the long bone attaching to the toe. As such the foot widens as the metatarsal splays away from the mid line of the foot and the big toe leans towards the second toe. Once the big toe starts to push against the second toe, the pressure through the ball of the foot changes in such a way that the other toes can start to change shape (hammer), which can lead to rubbing over the joint, pain in the ball of the foot and difficulty finding shoes to fit.
Management of bunions In the early stages of the deformity, trialling simple splints can help to relieve pain. These however rarely correct the underlying deformity, so the sooner this is started the better. If there are other contributing problems such as flat feet, specialised insoles designed to change foot function can be helpful. It is always better to seek advice from us before purchasing insoles to ensure they are right for you. DonJoy bunion splint Occasionally muscle paralysing injections (botox) can be used to relax the muscle pulling on the big toe in conjunction with a splint and exercises. Whilst this may help early deformity, it is unlikely to help once the condition is more advanced. Surgery Surgery remains the main stay of treatment for bunions. There are many myths surrounding surgical correction which can put people off seeking treatment. These however is not true and we will clearly explain what surgery involves and the likely outcome. Like any operation, whilst there are risks, the vast majority of people do very well with surgery. In fact in a 6 month audit of 970 of our patients, 94.7% were better off after surgery. Most surgical procedures involve cutting the metatarsal and big toe, re-aligning the toe and fixing the bone with screws. The screws are buried into the bone and are not routinely
removed. The operation can easily be carried out painlessly whist you are awake under a local anaesthetic block, which involves 3 injections around the ankle. The operation typically takes 20-40mins to complete, with discharge 1 hour after the operation. Recovery typically takes 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks are the most important, where we advise elevation of the foot and reduced activity. After 2 weeks a return to lace up shoes is permitted with increased weight bearing. Normally patients will take 4-6 weeks off work. Traditional osteotomy The most common approach to correcting bunions involves a 5cm cut along the side of the big toe. The bone is then cut in a Z shape known as a scarf cut along with a pie wedge of bone removed from the toe. The toe is the realigned and fixed with screws. Minimally invasive osteotomy With this approach, no long cut is made. Instead, tiny cuts no more than 2mm are made and special cutting burrs are used to cut and shape the bone. The bone is realigned under Xray control and screws are inserted again through tine 2mm cuts. With this approach, there is less soft tissue swelling, less postoperative discomfort and a quicker return to normal. Coriel Orthopaedic group is one of the few UK practices offering this type of specialised surgery.

IN THE FIRST OF A NEW COLUMN, CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING, A 100 PER CENT NATURAL NON-SURGICAL AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO IMPROVE SKIN TONE AND TEXTURE. lasmablast Skin Tightening works by shortening loose, sagging skin and erasing wrinkles. My signature facelift treatment will lift droopy brows, erase crows feet, open your eyes, give you back your cheekbones, open and lift your marionette lines and the pouches at the sides of your mouth and redefine your jawline. It ultimately leaves you with a fresh smoother face and will take years off you at the same time. Plasmablast is 100 per cent natural and to put it simply - I cause many tiny holes (like a cut) and then you heal. These pictures show the facelift treatment, it lasts for years and your skin ages naturally. I get all these scenarios in the salon: “I need a facelift”. “I need fillers”. “I need Botox”. Well, a facelift could set you back £5-12k, fillers £3001,600 and Botox basically temporarily paralyses the muscles, stops your face from moving and after time changes your face altogether. Why wouldn’t you want a more natural alternative? Plasmablast Skin Tightening works by using a specialised
P

device to deliver nitrogen-based pulses of plasma which charges the air just above the skin. This process damages existing skin cells and causes them to contract, meaning the skin’s natural healing process goes into overdrive, thus encouraging fresh new cells to be produced. These include collagen and elastin, which we all know is perfect in minimising the appearance of wrinkles. You will be able to see results immediately after treatment. The results will continue to improve as the skin cells regenerate in the following weeks.

MOTORING
MANY CAR COMPANIES ARE LOOKING AT HOW THEY CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
Back in black The Jaguar I-PACE has achieved global recognition and won multiple awards for its outstanding design. Now, the all-electric performance SUV’s appeal is heightened still further by the creation of the I-PACE Black special editions. These exclusive new additions to the IPACE range benefit from an enhanced specification over the SE and HSE models on which they are based and includes the Black Pack, panoramic roof and privacy glass. The clean, contemporary look is accentuated by the gloss black finish of the 20-inch five-spoke wheels, and the IPACE Black models are available in the full range of colours and include metallic paints as standard. Like every model in the range, the I-PACE Black models offers a wealth of technology designed to make every journey simpler and more enjoyable. The Pivi Pro infotainment system is ready to go by the time you’re in the driving seat and is as intuitive to use as your smartphone. For example, the EV navigation can show if nearby charging stations are available or in use, the type of connector they have, what they cost, and how long it will take to charge. A 90kWh battery delivers 400PS and 696Nm of instant torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Prices start from £65,245.
Carbon-neutral goal As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. As a start to achieving this goal, the EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ and is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbonneutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. MercedesBenz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. The first model on the market in the UK will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW. The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger.
Sport Venture A w-hole new ball game With more than 18 million units built, the Polo is one of the world’s most successful compact cars. Now,Volkswagen has unveiled its next evolutionary stage. The design, technologies and specification matrix of the bestseller have had a comprehensive update, as is immediately obvious when you see the vehicle’s new front and rear. And the range of standard equipment has been expanded significantly. On board every model you will now find: LED headlights and LED tail light clusters, the Digital Cockpit (digital instruments), an infotainment system and a multifunction steering wheel, among other things. In addition, the Polo now offers partly automated driving across its entire speed range thanks to the optional IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system. This brings together the new predictive ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and Lane Assist – which now comes as standard in every Polo – to create a new assist system to achieve this. The range will include Life, Style and R-Line models. 48 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
The 2021 Mazda MX-5 range has been enhanced with the launch of the limited edition Sport Venture, which arrives in UK dealerships this month. Based on the 1.5-litre 132ps Sport Convertible, the £27,615 Sport Venture features a stand-out design that includes free-of-charge Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint matched to a grey fabric hood and silver door mirror trims. Drop the roof and the Sport Venture’s Light Stone Nappa leather and silver roll hoop trims further complement the Deep Crystal Blue paint, as do the 16inch bright alloy wheels. With just 160 examples of the Sport Venture coming to the UK this latest special edition follows that tradition.

IN BRIEF
Ready to unlock The Crown Hotel in Bawtry is happily putting the past year of the pandemic behind them, and the team are feeling positive vibes as hospitality came out of lockdown on 17 May. The Bawtry hotel has not sat still during lockdown, and has turned the negative into a Daisy Astell, The Crown’s positive by taking the time to new Operations Manager redevelop the hotel, almost throughout, ready to greet the arrival of leisure guests. Craig Dowie, managing director, explains: “While we have remained open for essential business travellers throughout the pandemic, weddings have been put on hold, the bar and restaurant have been closed and no leisure guests have been permitted. We have however used the time wisely to redevelop the hotel. “New to the Crown will be the Terrace @ The Crown Hotel Bawtry with alfresco dining and drinking and will be open all day from breakfast, with live music Friday evening and Sunday afternoons. The façade of the hotel has been rendered and painted with new signage. The main hotel restaurant has also a new addition of a Robata Grill, and the restaurant has been rebranded as The Robata Grill Restaurant @ The Crown Hotel Bawtry. “To add to the equation, we have also decided to open the Café Express @ The Crown Hotel Bawtry also and will offer a takeaway service with Yorkshire pudding wraps, sandwiches, salad bar, ice cream and waffles.” The hotel is proud to have retained most of the staff during the pandemic and has also been on a recruitment drive for reopening due to the new food and beverage outlets. They are proud to announce the appointment of Daisy Astell to the team as their new Operations Manager, to oversee the day to day running of the food and beverage operations.
Music for Dementia darts is celebrating after receiving a grant to expand its musical services for people living with dementia. The money will enable the Doncaster-based charity to create a series of new CD newsletters to be delivered in person with musical activity on people’s doorsteps. It will also provide a welcome opportunity to engage with people with dementia and their families across Doncaster borough so they can join darts’ regular Singing for Memory group and activities at The Point. The grant was received from Music for Dementia’s Paul & Nick Harvey Fund, which was set up specifically to directly support musical activities for people with dementia. darts is planning to provide CD players and DVD players to those who are already part of the Singing for Memory group to increase access to musical activities and to connect with other members of the group. darts is also looking for new members to join the Singing for Memory group - this is open to any Doncaster resident with dementia or memory loass and their family carers. If you or someone in your family is living with dementia and would like to hear more about the project, please contact sophie@wearedarts.org.uk or phone 01302 341662.
