Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.
M
ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.
And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the
freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. ES 12 Days Of Christmas
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me… A WHOLE NEW LOOK
A
s 2015 draws to an end and the New Year comes into view, many of us will resolve to address the areas of our life that could perhaps do with a little improvement. If, for you, that means tweaking parts of your body that you’re not entirely happy with, Natural Look Clinic could offer the perfect solution. For the last two-and-a-half years, the clinic has been providing a first class service and delivering exceptional results for clients in Doncaster and beyond, with the latest techniques in liposuction, breast augmentation, cosmetic dentistry, facial injectables and much more. Specialising in enhancing your natural beauty and helping you to maintain optimum health, the Mr Kazzazi clinic’s trusted and highly qualified medical professionals are among the region’s finest. One of the clinic’s most popular specialties is breast cosmetic surgery. Options include implants (augmentation), consultations for uplift and reduction, reshaping using fat transfer, nipple correction, and general breast consultations. And it’s not only women looking for some of the region’s best breast services that contact the clinic, as male breast surgery – otherwise known as the treatment of ‘man boobs’ – is also available. Using liposuction

and the surgical removal of extra fat and breast tissue, it gives men the confidence to wear the clothes they want to wear without worrying about excess lumps and bumps. VaserLipo, which uses ultrasonic energy to selectively break down and remove unwanted body fat without destroying other tissues, is also available. Mr Kazzazi, consultant surgeon and head of surgery at the clinic, explains: “VaserLipo is performed under local anaesthetic and sedation, also known as twilight anaesthesia. It targets arms, tummies, thighs and other problem areas, leaving you with better body contours and a slimmer silhouette.” The clinic is CQC-approved and supported by a team of NHS consultant anaesthetists, and an excellent team of nursing and reception staff. Every positive comment from the clinic’s many happy clients includes a favourable mention of the staff and this excellent customer service is something on which they pride themselves. Payment plans and packages are available for many services, including cosmetic
dentistry and all types of advanced facial injectables. So, if you’re looking to improve an imperfection or highlight your best assets in the most beautiful – and natural – way, the Natural Look Clinic is an ideal choice. Call the team on 01302 760222 or visit the website www.naturallookclinic.co.uk to book a consultation or to find out more and take the first steps to an improved you.

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me… THE PERFECT LINGERIE
E
veryone deserves to feel special this Christmas and nothing makes a woman feel more glamorous and sexy than a gorgeous set of lingerie. & She Knows… in Bawtry is a luxury lingerie and swimwear boutique providing the perfect Christmas gift for that special someone. They recently started stocking wellknown luxury Italian lingerie label La Perla and are the only independent stockist in the North of England to house the brand. La Perla chose & She Knows... to represent them as they recognise the high level of customer service the boutique offers. “Our personal service is our primary focus and that along with the quality and fit of our heritage lingerie brands and our product knowledge is what makes ladies seek us out,” confirms owner Emily Harbon. The boutique’s other ranges include Empreinte, PrimaDonna, Aubade, Hanro and Maryan Mehlhorn. The store also offers a full specialist fitting service. Both Emily and her colleague Sam have been trained to the highest standard in bra fitting and fitting care wear, including breast forms and prosthesis, by leading underwear brands, and on independent courses run by Lindsey Brown, a leading trainer in the field. Lindsey trains delegates from all over the world including staff from huge retailers such as Rigby & Peller and Harrods, to breast surgeons and nurses. “Once our clients have been fitted properly and have experienced

the benefits of using a specialised independent service, they vow never to go back to buying department store lingerie,” says Emily. Emily has four years of experience, whilst Sam has worked in retail and customer service for over 20 years and has a wide breadth of experience of serving the public. The business was established in 2012 and has since gone from strength to strength building its brands and customer base. They are now recognised by ladies up and down the country and in Europe, who buy the boutique’s luxury lingerie online. Many ladies enjoy the comfort of the everyday underwear ranges that & She Knows… stock too. As well as beautiful lingerie from France, Belgium and Italy & She Knows… is also proud to support quality
British brands such as Pepper & Mayne, luxury loungewear and Après sportswear perfect for yoga and pilates. Pepper & Mayne provide an elegant alternative to mainstream loungewear with ballet-inspired pieces, cashmere wraps and a quilted range. If you are unsure, of what to buy this Christmas, the boutique has some inspiring key pieces from three seasonal ranges by La Perla, as well as a wide range of stock from other highquality brands. If you are already thinking ahead to next year, the store is also looking forward to the arrival of their new swimwear collections in early 2016. So whether you’re looking to buy luxury lingerie for someone special or are a woman wanting to treat yourself, or snuggle up in something more comfortable this season, & She Knows… has a gorgeous selection and an excellent personal service to match.

ES 12 Days Of Christmas
On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me… SERVICE WITH STYLE
R
EaL Ladieswear in Tickhill celebrated its third anniversary in true style with a day filled with bucks fizz, Prosecco and canapés. “It was such a pleasure to see so many loyal customers who have supported REaL over the past years,” says owner Gaynor Waddington. “Goody bags, gift vouchers and free scarves were handed out all day, as a small gesture of appreciation to the ladies who call in week after week.” The boutique, formerly Ida May’s of Howden, has been established for over 12 years and continues to go from strength to strength. Their ethos of providing great, honest customer service has been paramount to the longevity and success of the business and they offer a fabulous selection of collections at affordable prices, which are not available elsewhere within South Yorkshire. REaL continually strives to source new ranges that will add something different to the current labels. New this year is Paul Brial, a French fashion house, which creates styles that step away from some of the classic collections and inject the timeless, feminine style the French have become so famous for. Reversible suede, animal-print coats have been best sellers this year and quickly sold out in all colours, proving that people are looking for something that is not available on the high street. Frank Lyman Design, a label that has been part of the business for over six years, continues to be popular with ladies who return to REaL regularly to view each month’s deliveries. Other fabulous daywear ranges include Lebek and Oui

Moments, which are very much leading the way in affordable casual wear. Paz Torras has also always been a firm favourite for the diversity in styles and fabrics and their consistently positive approach to fashion. REaL also stocks the Doris Streich collection, which was initially designed as a plus-size range, available in sizes 18 to 24, but proved so popular that next year, it will be available from a size 12 upwards. REaL is happy to stock most collections up to size 20 as standard and up to size 24 where possible. The boutique not only has a fabulous selection of ladieswear but also a wide range of scarves, handbags and jewellery. Accessories range from £9.95 for scarves and up to £35 for handbags and necklaces. Beautiful, bespoke handmade fascinators are also proving exceptionally popular and these are priced from £39 up to £149. They are available in the shop in a wide range of colours and styles, or can be ordered and designed in colours to match customers' outfits. To explore what’s on offer at REal, visit the boutique in Tickhill today and receive a wonderfully warm welcome from Gaynor and the team. ES 12 Days Of Christmas
On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me… GIRLY GLITZ AND GLAMOUR
W
hen we get ready for a night out, it’s the little details that make us feel glamorous. Something as simple as longer lashes or gorgeously manicured nails can dramatically transform our look and with the festive party season upon us, it’s time to shine. At the Lash & Nail Boutique, you’ll find a complete lash, nail, make-up and hair service, as well as a number of spa therapies all under one roof. Whether you just want some finishing touches or the works, there is a service to suit you.
Round up the girls for a pamper party, arrange a hen do, or start your night out in style and get ready at the salon. Just bring your outfit to the boutique, let the team work their magic and step out looking fabulous. Hairdresser Jess is on hand to get you in the party spirit with a variety of colours, cuts, blow-dry styles and up dos. Jess has lots of salon experience and is here to look after and pamper you. The Lash and Nail Boutique has also

recently welcomed beauty therapist Hannah to the team. Hannah offers a number of spa therapies including Dermalogica facials and a range of massages to help melt those Christmas stresses away. She is also an experienced lash technician who can provide spectacular lashes or natural-looking lashes for day and night. The salon is proud to announce that they are now offering Russian lashes. Russian lashes are the latest technique to come to the UK, with only a handful of salons outside of London offering them. Each set of lashes is tailored to your needs, with between 500 (4D) and 1000 (6D) lashes available per set. Whilst other lash techniques involve applying cluster lashes to several of your natural lashes, which can be damaging, the Russian lashes are grouped together and applied to one host lash. Another thing that makes these lashes so revolutionary is that they are synthetic mink lashes, meaning they are much lighter and finer than other mink lashes on the market. Ask for Russian lashes this season and get the lovely thick and full lashes you have always wanted. The Lash & Nail Boutique’s other services include permanent make-up, HD brows, manicures and pedicures. The salon uses the best quality brands in everything the do including Gelish nail products, professional hair dyes by Affinage, advanced hair treatments by Kitoko and Olaplex styling products. The Lash & Nail Boutique are confident that you will love your new look, but if you
are not satisfied with any of their services, they offer a seven-day guarantee, meaning you can go back and correct it within seven days. The salon is open from 11am until 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, 10am until 6pm on Wednesdays, 10am until late on Thursdays and 9am until 7pm on Fridays. If you’re dreaming of a glam Christmas, contact the Lash & Nail Boutique to make an appointment or enquire about their late-night opening hours.

ES 12 Days Of Christmas
On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me… A REALLY WILD TIME
T
he award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) is the perfect place to get in the festive mood while doing your Christmas shopping and enjoying a fun-packed day. The landmark Christmas Fair, jam-packed with entertainment and Christmas gifts at over 90 bustling market stalls, is a must for all the family. This year, the Christmas Fair is included in a special all-inclusive price for the park (for 12 and 13 December only) of £8 for adults and £6 for concessions. There will also be a traditional carousel, Victorian swingboats, a giant snowglobe and lots of Christmas food and drink available. The Fair is open from 10am to 6pm, with last entry to the animal reserves at 3pm. Santa will also be in residence on weekends from 5 December – booking online is recommended as it was a sell-out last year. The courtyard’s Safari Village shopping area, which has a number of specialist boutique shops and has welcomed record numbers of visitors throughout 2015, will be packed with unique gifts and YWP-themed presents. There is a vast array of toys and other gift ideas, including VIP animal experiences, cuddly lions, giraffes and top-selling polar bears. YWP is also hosting its famed festive party nights in the run up to Christmas. The park’s Tsavo Safari Lodge marquee becomes a glittering winter wonderland through December, with party night guests treated to a mulled wine or a chilled glass of Prosecco before enjoying a delicious three-course meal. The Christmas party nights include a post dinner ‘rock and soul’ disco until 12.30am and cost £35 per person. They run from 7 to 20 December and all must be pre booked. Full details can be found on the website.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Winter is the perfect time to get up close and personal with the majestic animals at YWP, and its mesmerising walk-through experience makes your visit even more special. The park boasts a unique collection of animals, including some of the world’s most beautiful and rare species such as giraffes, lions, meerkats and the youngest arrivals, the Amur tiger and leopard cubs. The two four-month-old Amur leopard cubs have recently ventured out into the main enclosure for the first time with their mother Freya and are a must see with only 70 of these critically endangered animals now in the wild. It is hoped that they will be part of a reintroduction programme in their native Russia in the future. YWP also boasts the country’s only polar bears: Nissan, Pixel and Victor. Nissan, the newest arrival to the ten-acre Project Polar, is making the most of his new home designed to mirror the summer Arctic tundra habitat, with deep lakes, pools, rocks and hills. YWP is open every day excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, offering a funfilled day of festive fun and presents for every member of the family. The park also has an indoor 600sqm Monkey Playbarn – the perfect place to stay warm and enjoy a hot drink and food in the 120seater eatery. Children can enjoy three levels of play equipment including climbing frames, dens slides and rope bridges in full view of the baboon reserve through a glass wall.

THE FINEST GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS
C
hanges are afoot at Caviars, Bawtry’s own boutique restaurant and wine bar, in time for the Christmas season. Major changes are being made to the eating experience with a new menu offering an even higher level of modern British cuisine but at prices that represent greater value for money. Behind the new menu is new executive chef Darren Rogan, (pictured), who joined the team in early November. Darren, a Lincoln resident, has spent almost half of his life in the kitchen, having started training at Lincoln’s AA Rosette standard Wig & Mitre aged just 15. In the period in between, Darren worked in several gastropubs, Lincoln’s Epernay Champagne & Seafood Restaurant and the prestigious Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield before landing at the Tower Hotel & Restaurant in Lincoln. Whilst at the Tower Hotel, Darren won his first AA Rosette in May 2012, an award he retained for four years until his departure earlier this year. Darren is passionate about what he does
and is excited and committed to moving Caviars to an even higher standard of cuisine. His style is eclectic and creative, and pushes the boundaries of gastronomy using evolving cooking techniques. Darren says: “I am extremely excited to be joining the Caviars team as we develop our concept and I will be striving to put the restaurant on the food map by using the best local produce to maximise flavour and freshness.” Caviars owner Kevin Firth says: “We are tremendously excited to welcome Darren as executive chef at an exciting time for the Caviars team. Our thanks go to Ross Leggitt who worked with us for three years and has chosen to move to pastures new. Darren will look after the restaurant side as we develop our business model both in Bawtry and elsewhere.” The Caviars team has acquired the Huntsman Inn at Torworth, half way between Bawtry and Retford on the Great North Road. Kevin says: “Our plan is to reopen the Huntsman in early 2016 as an 80-plus cover
gastro-pub with Darren developing a menu extended beyond the current Caviars offering. Alongside Darren, Caviars’ general manager Malcolm Beanlands will be developing the restaurant service concept further to ensure an overall experience up there with the very best. “We also plan to have a small number of high standard guest rooms for our customers to use, plus a garden we hope people will love to use when the weather permits. The Huntsman has been closed since July when we acquired it but we hope to start the redevelopment imminently to re-invigorate, modernise and ultimately give this lovely old building a new lease of life.” The Caviars team will be sharing information about both restaurants as soon as it becomes available. Meanwhile, they are interested in hearing from anyone looking to develop or nurture a career in the restaurant business. To enquire, contact Malcolm on 01302 710006 or reservations@caviarsofbawtry.com. Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar 9-9a Swan Street, Bawtry DN10 6JQ Tel: 01302 710006 www.caviarsofbawtry.com

‘An amazing day’ Thousands flocked to this year’s Bawtry Christmas Spectacular. housands of visitors flocked to Bawtry to enjoy the delights of its Christmas Spectacular. The event, which is in its third year, saw the town’s retail association host a stunning event which enveloped the main street and quaint courtyards with festive stalls, fairground rides, a visit from Father Christmas and his elves, Polar Bear Santa and live music. “We had an absolutely amazing day and want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who played their part in making it so special for all our visitors,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of Bawtry Retail Association. “One of the highlights of the day was our traditional carousel which Bawtry Town Council kindly sponsored and staffed throughout the day, keeping lots of children and their families happy.” As is tradition, the unveiling of the

Womack’s Christmas window also took place, revealing a visual masterpiece complete with fake snow falling from the roof, Scottish pipers and dancers and a fire-eater on stilts – much to the delight of the crowd who cheered and clapped as the windows were unveiled. “Womack’s certainly know how to do Christmas and I am certain this year their window would rival displays in any major city, including London,” said Rebecca. “It was fantastic to see such spirit and camaraderie amongst all Bawtry businesses and retailers, making the day very special for all our visitors.” Bawtry businesses will remain in the Christmas spirit with late night openings and festive treats at cafes, bars and restaurants as well as being a superb place to find amazing Christmas gifts for friends and family. A charity masquerade ball was held at The Crown Hotel in aid of Dementia UK and raised a spectacular £2,635. The event, organised by owner of Countryside Cleaning Limited, Elizabeth Birdsall, kicked off with Razzamatazz living statues, Dan Burnett piano blues and a champagne reception. A game of heads and tails set a fantastic atmosphere and the raffle and auction were both a great success. Entertainment from Saint Harlot got everyone on their feet and DJ Paul Ruckledge played into the early hours. Elizabeth said: “We would just like to say a big thank you to everyone that helped us, especially The Crown Hotel staff who made the evening seamless and the catering was complimented by everyone. Thank you to all the sponsors and everyone that donated raffle and auction prizes.” For photographs of this event turn to our Bawtry Paparazzi pages.

LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT AT CHINA ROSE BAWTRY Representatives from China Rose Bawtry attended a training session to learn how to operate life-saving defibrillator equipment. The session, held by community defibrillation trainer Brendon Mulkerrin from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service, emphasised how early defibrillation and CPR can increase a person’s survival rate by up to 40 per cent after having a cardiac arrest. A charity dinner, held recently at the Crown Hotel Bawtry, provided funds to purchase a new defibrillator, which is now located at China Rose. Restaurant manager Carly Hui said: “We hope we never have to put our training into practice but, if we do, we now have the knowledge and confidence to deliver speedy care to anyone who may need such treatment.” Further information can be found at www.bhf.org.uk

Terri models her extensions while Rebecca (right) sports a longer fringe
Longer, more luxurious hair is perfect for the party season – and is easily achievable thanks to Rubies. We put their hair extensions to the test.
The long and short of it any women opt for short hair as it is easy to maintain day-to-day, but when we dress up for a big night out, some of us want our hair to be longer and more luxurious. With the Christmas party season fast approaching, there’s no better time to glam up our locks. Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore and sales executive Rebecca Humes are also conscious of the approaching party season, so they paid a visit to Rubies, The Hair Boutique. Owner Margaret Parkin and her experienced team specialise in hair extensions,

as well as providing cutting, colouring and styling services for both men and women. Before their appointments, Terri and Rebecca dropped in for a comprehensive consultation with Margaret who, after a short questionnaire, did a colour match and tested the condition of their hair. This involved checking the strength of their existing hair and advising them on the length. Terri ordered 16 inches of extensions to be bonded into her mid-length hair, whilst Rebecca decided to add a long fringe to her cropped do. Margaret has been doing hair extensions
for the past 20 years and always uses Great Lengths, as they have proven to be the best, most resilient hair brand, with the strongest bond. These particular Great Lengths extensions are called Indian Temple Hair, which are naturally grown by real women and are ethically sourced in India. Indian hair is the best quality as it is untreated, making it more tolerable to the pre-bonding, colouring and colour removal process. What also differentiates Great Length hair from other brands is the colouring process.

David Gold, founder of Great Lengths, teamed up with scientists to come up with a sophisticated method of removing the pigments from wool fibres rather than bleaching them. This process was developed for hair so clients can enjoy healthy, high-quality extensions with long-lasting results. Terri and Rebecca returned for their appointments, where their extensions were professionally bonded to their existing hair using a GL3200 Electronic Hair Extension machine. Their hair was then cut and styled. This process usually takes two-and-a-half hours. They were then advised on the after care of their hair, including how to wash and style their hair effectively. They then booked checkups in six weeks time. Clients are asked to return to the salon when they are ready to remove their extensions to avoid damaging their own hair. The extensions can even be reused again, only cut slightly shorter. When asked about her new hair, Terri said: “I’m a frequent user of clip-in hair extensions, but they have a tendency to slip and you can be conscious of them not being in right. “I was astounded when the extensions were all in. I can’t feel them at all – they’re just felt like my own hair. They have given me so

much confidence and I was very reassured to find that both the extensions and the service at Rubies are of the highest quality.” Rebecca added: “I was pleasantly surprised when Margaret said she would be able to put extensions in my hair as it was so short. Messing around with my hair too much resulted in me having it cut off which was ok, but I felt less confident and unladylike. “I am amazed that the extensions are not visible at all and my hair is now incredibly versatile.” If you want a more glamorous and versatile do this season, call Rubies today. Bawtry paparazzi The Crown Hotel enjoyed a huge Halloween weekend with the bar full of spooky decorations. Their skeleton on hotel reception became a local celebrity on Facebook and they even ran a competition over the weekend to name him. The winning name was James Bones 007 and the winner received a bottle of Prosecco.
The Crown Hotel also sponsored the Racing Post Trophy Meet at Doncaster Racecourse. The winning horse was Sea Wolf and a great day was had by the Crown team.

www.visitbawtry.com
Happy holidays A complete service and impartial advice are just a few reasons why Bliss Travel has been chosen as our Retailer of the Month. ongratulations to Bliss Travel, who have been named our Visit Bawtry Retailer of the Month. On hearing the news that they had been selected, director Rebecca Jackson said: “We are delighted and very proud to receive this award. We love what we do and finding customers their perfect holiday. This makes it really worthwhile.” It’s already shaping up to be a fantastic month for Bliss Travel as the announcement coincides with the business’s tenth anniversary. To celebrate their success, Rebecca, husband Lee Jackson (accounts and marketing) and sales executive Louise Turner invited 55 customers and a number of tour operators to an evening of prosecco and nibbles. Tour operators there to support the event included Silversea Cruises, Omega Holidays, Typically Holidays, African Pride and G A Adventures. The evening included a travel quiz, where lucky customers won a two-night city break at a four-star hotel in Palma. The independent travel agent offer fantastic deals on various types of holidays including city breaks in the UK and abroad, ski holidays, cruises, rail and coach holidays, villas, and package holidays.

FT was founded by Jon Reynolds after he left the army in 2009. It offers a unique approach to fitness classes, personal training and team building that helps clients to achieve MFT’s tagline: ‘Be Your Best’. What began in Doncaster has become a national company, with a number of locations in London and the south coast soon to open. Closer to home, the Bawtry classes are causing quite a stir. “Our most popular programme is the Inch Loss Guarantee (£80), a 30-day challenge that includes unlimited classes at Memorial Sports Ground and a no-nonsense diet plan,” said Jon. “If by the end of the month you haven’t lost at least one inch, you get your money back.” Classes are conducted by personal trainer James Shenton, who also offers one-to-one sessions for those looking to push themselves even further. Flexible payment options (with no joining fees or contracts) are available to suit you. So whether you’d like unlimited membership, pay as you go, or something in between, there’s a package for you. “We take coaching very seriously and take time to understand the needs of everyone who turns up,” continues Jon. “There’s no such thing as ‘one cap fits all’ when it comes to exercise so, even with group fitness, we ensure everybody has the benefit of a personal touch.” This theory is also applied to an alternative arm of the business. Their corporate fitness packages are team building-style sessions designed to build better relationships and communication between work colleagues. Jon believes that, by putting teams under pressure using fitness, he can identify cracks and encourage these problems to be solved through open, honest discussions. For sports teams looking to up their game, sports performance specialist Dave Cook is also on hand. He studies the demands of individual sports and builds physical and psychological programmes to help teams bond together better and successfully drive towards a common goal. Two’s company The wait is finally over. BMW has finally released details upon its most eagerly anticipated model in recent times. The M2 looks like a very aggressive beast thanks to a distinctive body kit, wider tracks – front and rear axles from M3 and M4 – and quad exhausts giving the impression of a much more taught and purposeful machine. The engine is a beefed-up version of the unit found in the M235i, meaning a single turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six producing 370hp and a maximum of 369lb ft of torque. It’s available with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox and is driven exclusively through the rear wheels via an electronic differential. 0-62mph times are 4.5 and 4.3 seconds respectfully. Priced from £44,070. On sale in April.
A high-powered small BMW grabs the headlines in this month’s round-up, writes Jordan Cutforth.
Racing pedigree
In the black Skoda has introduced a new addition to its Citigo range. It’s called the Black Edition and it’s for those wanting a tad more style from their Citigo without forking out the extra for the Monte Carlo trim. Additions to the Black edition include 15-inch black Auriga alloy wheels, Sunset privacy glass for the rear windows, a choice of Deep Black or Candy White paint and body-coloured door mirrors. It also includes Skoda’s Portable Infotainment Device (PID), which controls the likes of the satellite navigation, Bluetooth and the multimedia player. Manual air-conditioning comes as standard too, as well as four additional loudspeakers and a multimedia holder. Only the 59hp 1.0-litre petrol is available for this car. Prices are £9,990 (3-door) and £10,340 (5-door). Available now.
Yet another special edition of the Abarth 500 rolls of the production line. It’s called the 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition – yes, they really did call it that – and it’s to celebrate Abarth’s position as the official sponsor and car supplier of the FIM MotoGP championship. Created in partnership with Yamaha, the car is fitted with a lower suspension set up with some slick new Koni shock absorbers and a very purposeful Monza exhaust system which sounds the real deal. Other additions include 17-inch matt-black alloys, darkened windows and a special Yamaha Factory Racing badge. It comes with a 160hp 1.4-litre turbocharged engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. 0-62mph comes in 7.4 seconds with a combined economy figure of 47.1mpg. Priced from £17,420. Available now.
ST-riking new addition After the release of the all-new Astra hatchback, we have news of an estate version. It’s called the Sports Tourer and its set for a March launch priced from £16,585 – approximately £1,870 less expensive spec for spec than the outgoing model. It’ll come with the same trim levels as the hatchback, bar Energy (Design, Tech Line, SRi and Elite) with Design being the entry level spec and Elite being the most luxurious. The Sports Tourer will come with Vauxhall’s radical OnStar connect system which acts as your own personal assistant (not available on Design trim sadly). Petrol engine highlights include a 197hp 1.6-litre and the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo unit. A 1.6-litre diesel will be offered which can achieve up to 85.6mpg and 86g/km of CO2.

Building a home together It’s a family affair for the first residents at The Residence Lakeside.
M
use Development’s The Residence in Doncaster has proven the perfect place to put down roots for three generations of one Doncaster family, who are amongst the first buyers to move into a brand new property at the developer’s popular Lakeside scheme. Assessment officer Angela Booth (59) and daughter Claire Churchill (42) were impressed with the high quality of homes at Muse’s Doncaster town centre development, The Gables, having visited the home of Angela’s son Chris, who purchased a two-bed property in March 2015. The mother and daughter duo were looking to buy a home they could live in together along with Claire’s six-year-old son Alfie, and jumped at the chance to purchase a family home at Muse’s second Doncaster development, The Residence, which launched in June. The family set their sights on a threebedroom ‘Lysander’ home which offers openplan living space, fully-fitted kitchen, two bathrooms and a downstairs WC as well as

gardens and private parking. Angela and Claire used the government-backed equity loan scheme, Help to Buy, to secure their new home in this sought-after location with a just five per cent deposit. Commented Angela: “We love that the house, and whole development, is so close to the lake which is brilliant for walks and getting out and about. Our home is big enough to give us plenty of room to live together whilst also having our own space.” The winning combination of thoughtful design, beautiful craftsmanship and a stunning waterside location have resonated with local buyers who have flocked to the Lakeside development, with 16 properties snapped up. Comments Hollie Reynolds, sales and marketing manager at Muse: “It’s great to see the first home-owners moving in and creating a community here. The feedback we’ve had so far is that our residents just love the location; the beautiful lakeside scenery and parks close by, as well as restaurants, a cinema and shops within walking distance, not to mention Lakeside Village and Doncaster Dome just down the road.”
The Residence, which features a charming collection of 51 luxury two, three and fourbedroom homes at the edge of more than 50 acres of lake. Two-bed homes start from £152,950; three-bed homes from £184,500, and four-beds from £229,950. A number of ¾-bedroom lakeside townhouses, currently under construction, are available from £279,950. ES Champagne Tasting
Words & Photography: Stephanie Burns
Christmas sparkle Which cork should you be popping on 25 December? We put a host of supermarket Champagnes to the test.
T
here is nothing quite like the first sip of fizz on Christmas morning. One of the few occasions it is socially acceptable to drink alcohol at 8am, the day wouldn’t be the same without a chilled flute by your side while opening gifts. The question is – which seasonal sparkler should you choose to celebrate with? By now a well-loved tradition, our annual Champagne tasting at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry rounds up the best of the year’s offerings to help you decide which cork you should pop on 25 December. As ever, we gathered a panel of ladies who, while not necessarily experts in the art of wine tasting, certainly know what they like
76
The Panel: Pictured above (L-R) – Rebecca Hume, Eastside sales executive Sarah White, Bawtry Eye Academy Elizabeth Birdsall, Countryside Cleaning Terri Moore, Eastside publishing manager Katey Dent, The Crown Hotel Sam Dowie, The Crown Hotel Megan Thrower, The Vanilla Rooms Bridge Grayson, The Vanilla Rooms
when it comes to Champagne – and aren’t afraid to share their opinions. More accustomed to the likes of Bollinger and Veuve Clicquot, we decided to test their tastebuds this year with a selection of bottles that didn’t break the £30 mark. The UK’s leading supermarkets and wine retailers each put forward a bottle of what they considered to be the best of their reasonably-priced stock for scrutiny – and then it was up to our panel to decide which one came out on top. With each bottle’s identity concealed beneath a layer of foil, and numbered from one to eight, they had no idea what they were drinking. All they had to do was try each one in turn before writing down their comments and marks out of ten.

As expected, opinion was divided from the moment the first cork was popped. Kicking off the evening was a Sainsbury’s Blancs de Noirs, £20, which received a mixed reaction from the group. Although most agreed that the smell was a bit too strong and it wasn’t very fizzy, Terri found the light taste quite appealing and Megan thought it got nicer the more she drank. Their final scores placed the bottle fourth. Next up was our cheapest Champagne of the evening – the Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut by Philizot, which is available at Aldi for £9.97. The budget supermarket’s Cava stormed to glory at our 2013 tasting, but could this more expensive bubbly keep up the pace? Sadly not, and it ended up third from bottom in our rankings. But not all disliked the taste; although Bridge and Terri both commented on its sourness, Elizabeth liked its ‘high-end qualities’ and scored it six out of ten. At the other end of the scale, the joint most expensive fizz was poured next. Asda’s Extra Special 2007 Vintage Champagne Brut (usually £30 but currently on offer for £18) turned out to be our star of the evening. Receiving top marks from Sam, who even thought it could be Veuve Clicquot, it was enjoyed by most of the panel and Sarah happily commented that she could drink it all night.
Unfortunately, the positivity soon faded as our only rosé of the evening drew dire reviews from the ladies. The Tesco Finest Rosé Champagne, £20, described as ‘absolutely awful’ by Bridge and smelling rather strongly of cheese, received the lowest scores of the night, with three of the panel giving it just one out of ten. At this point in proceedings, the ladies took a break to sample some of the Crown’s fabulous sharing platters. Loaded with a mouth-watering variety of seafood, Asianinspired bites and Mediterranean treats, they provided the perfect accompaniment to a chilled glass of fizz and were polished off in no time. Â

ES Champagne Tasting
After the plates had been cleared, it was back to the task in hand and the panel were raring to taste our fifth bottle. Their enthusiasm was rewarded with the second favourite of the night, a Waitrose Blanc de Blancs Brut NV, £24.99. Among suggestions that it could be Moët, Rebecca described it as a ‘beaut!’ and Katey loved how drinkable it was. All round, an impressive result. This regrettably wasn’t the case for Majestic’s contribution. The respected Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Gold Top 2009, £30, came second bottom as many thought it was too flat and Sarah in particular wasn’t keen on its lingering aftertaste. Could our penultimate pour – a Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne, £24.99 – from the Co-operative meet with our panel’s approval? Despite being a regular awardwinner, including scooping three tops prizes at this year’s inaugural Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, the ladies weren’t bowled over. While Sam loved its abundance of bubbles and pleasant taste, Elizabeth disliked both taste and smell and
gave it just one out of ten. Our final bottle came courtesy of Lidl – a Bissinger Premier Cru NV, £15.99 – and scored well with our panel. Megan quickly named it her favourite of the night and, though Katey identified an unusual tasting note of burnt toast, after taking a sip she decided that it tasted totally different to how it smelt. As we gathered in the mark sheets and totted up the scores, it became clear that not one of the bottles had managed to unite our panel with a resounding victory. The winner – Asda’s Extra Special 2007 Vintage Champagne Brut – came top of the poll with a rather modest 56/80. But if this division of opinion means that we should all be encouraged to taste a variety of festive fizz to find the perfect bottle for Christmas Day, well, we’re certainly not complaining.

The spirit of Cuba
After blazing a Latin trail in the early noughties, Cubana are now firmly established as one of the top party venues in the city.
I
t was 15 years ago that Cubana burst onto the Sheffield nightlife scene, offering a burst of joyous Havana sunshine on a sleepy back street a short shimmy away from the city centre. Looking at all the multicultural restaurants, bars and music venues in the city, it is easy to take the wide variety of food, drink and sounds from around the world for granted. But it hasn’t always been such a hotbed of diversity, and Cubana was one of the trailblazers that helped breathe new life into Sheffield. Now the salsa venue is celebrating a landmark anniversary… and it is as fresh and vibrant as ever. First unleashed on an unsuspecting public in November 2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, mouth-watering tapas food and colourful cocktails all blended, bringing people together in a fun and friendly setting. Now based in Leopold Square, the Latin beat pulses stronger than ever.
First Steps Co-owner Adrian Bagnoli first got into Latin music whilst visiting a popular Brazilian nightclub called the Maracanã in Florence, Italy. Adrian was amazed by the lively atmosphere and was convinced that this was exactly the kind of night out Sheffield needed. “Back then, the only Latin music people knew was The Gipsy Kings and La Bamba,” explains Adrian. “We decided the time was ripe to introduce a bit more culture to Sheffield.” Adrian and friends Toni Dente and Gian Bohan started by launching a Viva Salsa night at local nightclub Club Uropa (formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJ Marcus Vinicius and a live Brazilian band called Viramundo for the opening night. An astounding 700 people attended the first event in June 1996, making Sheffield’s first salsa club night an undeniable success. “This really paved the way for us,” says Adrian. “Calendar News came to cover it and the atmosphere was incredible. It gave us lots of confidence and we started booking touring bands from Cuba and Latin-American bands based in London and Manchester.” The final Viva Salsa took place in May 2000 and it was then that Adrian joined forces with Brad Charlesworth and Kito Morales to open Cubana on Trippet Lane.
82
Cubana Mk. I – Trippet Lane Getting the look of the venue right was just as important as creating the authentic tapas dishes and cocktails, so Adrian employed talented architect and close friend Paul Brady, to capture a true Latin vibe. “We offered something different – people felt like they’d discovered something great tucked away on this backstreet in the city centre,” says Adrian. “There wasn’t another tapas bar in Sheffield at the time. “We’d already built up contacts with the Latino community from the Viva Salsa night, so they were on board as soon as they discovered we’d be offering live music.”
Cubana Live One of Cubana’s proudest moments was hosting a night at Music In The Gardens Festival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens. Cubana Live attracted a sell-out crowd of over 3,500 people and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities. The extravaganza offered some of the most popular Latin artists, including Omar Puente and his band. The group arrived in chauffeur-driven 1957 Chevrolet convertibles and pulled up in front of the stage, before delivering an amazing performance. Omar Puente and his band

Special Guests Over the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorable guests. A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 was certainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned after their second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008. Brad and Adrian with Not least, because the highlight of their second visit Roberto Duran (centre) was when Buena Vista’s pianist Rolando Luna took up the offer of playing the classic Latin favourite ‘Guantamanera’ alongside the house band on Dr Aleida Guevara (centre) a piano specially hired in for the occasion. “It was just incredible, the place erupted and the atmosphere was electric – it was a very special night,” confirms Adrian. Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubana was given the ultimate seal of approval when Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of famous Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara, visited for dinner and posed for a picture underneath the portrait of her father. Other notable guests include Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time, who visited in 2003 and the cast of Lady Salsa following a performance at the Lyceum Theatre.
Cubana Mk. II – Leopold Square After 14 years building up a reputation as the most vibrant independent Cuban bar in Sheffield, it was time to say goodbye to Trippet Lane. Adrian discovered the two-level venue, formerly Platillos in Leopold Square, had become available. After a discussion with business partner Brad, they decided the time was right to move. Adrian and his team enlisted the help of local artist Paul Staveley and Paul Brady once again to recreate Cubana’s trademark style. Just four days after closing the Trippet Lane venue, the new Cubana was opened. “The final Saturday night at the old Cubana felt like a New Year’s Eve party; people were looking forward to a potentially exciting future,” Adrian recalls. “We opened with a big party on Thursday 24 July. Over 400 people turned up and it was an incredible atmosphere. We knew right then, from everyone’s reaction that it was going to work.” Now offering two floors for two different nights out, diners can enjoy the cosy upstairs area or party downstairs. Cubana turn over around 300 diners on a Saturday night, many of which stay all night. “You could walk in at 7pm and end up staying until we close at 2am,” says Adrian. “There’s great flavoursome food, courtesy of Chilean head chef Fabrian Cruz who has been in charge of kitchen affairs since day one, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music and vibrant music to dance to – all under one roof.” Cubana’s Salsa In The Square has also been a huge success. Since Cubana has taken over hosting the Bank Holiday Sunday extravaganza, attendance numbers have doubled and Adrian looks forward to offering a live Cuban salsa band, salsa lessons, dance demos and more in May 2016. So, after 14 years brightening up Trippet Lane and a successful first year adding a vibrant mix of Cuban flavour to Leopold Square, how will Adrian and his team be celebrating their success? “Of course, there will be a big party, but Brad and I are going over to Cuba in January too,” says Adrian. “It’s such a great place and we’ll get loads of inspiration. We’ll be treating that as our 15th birthday present.” If you’re looking for a lively venue with the full package, Cubana can provide the delicious food, the colourful cocktails and the live entertainment to start your festive season. ES Dining Out Photographs: Fiona Barber
Light my fire Fiona Barber finds that the sizzling grill, authentic flavours and buzzing atmosphere make Elif a slice of Turkish delight.
T
here’s nothing quite like dining next to a roaring fire during the cold winter months; absorbing the warm glow of heat as you fill up with delicious food and drink. While this might typically conjure up images of a pub snug, in fact we were in The Courtyard in Bawtry, at Turkish restaurant Elif. And on this occasion, the coal fire was actually a charcoal grill lined with meat skewers. Elif has been at The Courtyard for just a year, and its varied menu, quality meats and relaxed atmosphere have proved a hit with customers. We arrived early one Friday evening, ducking away from the bitter wind into the stylish cocktail bar where we were greeted by owner Jonathan Clough, who led us upstairs to the restaurant. Thawing out next to the grill, we had prime seats at the open kitchen where we watched the expert chefs get to work. We kicked off the evening with a selection of one cold and two hot mezes: hummus, grilled Turkish sausage, and pan-fried prawns with garlic and parsley. Each dish was packed with flavour and beautifully presented with fresh salad. The hummus was a particular highlight and was came with a plenty of bread for dipping. Presentation is something Elif clearly takes pride in, and my main course arrived as a foil swan – quite a spectacle. Unwrapped, the swan revealed an earthenware pot filled with chunks of lamb, onions, tomatoes peppers and garlic. The lamb was particularly tender and was balanced wonderfully by a refreshing bulgar wheat salad.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Across the table, my partner was tucking into a generous portion of adana (minced lamb) served with yogurt and tomato sauce. The meat was perfectly seasoned, with a wonderful char-grilled flavour and also came served with a delicious accompanying salad. An ideal winter-warmer dish.
What we ate: Starters Humus, £3.95 Sucuk – spicy Turkish sausage grilled on charcoal, £4.95 Karides tava – large fresh water prawns pan fried in olive oil with garlic and parsley, £5.95 Mains Iskender – adana minced lamb served with yogurt and special tomato sauce, £14.50 Guvec – pieces of lamb cooked in an earthenware pot with tomatoes, onion, peppers and garlic, £12.95
With so much indulgence we could only manage to share a pudding and opted for the traditional baklava, a decision we didn’t regret. The rich, sweet layers of filo were filled and topped with chopped nuts and soaked in syrup – creating a beautiful justcrunchy texture and the perfect ending to our meal. The huge selection of dishes here gives diners the flexibility of enjoying an extravagant meal, or a healthier light bite. While the delicious food and drink are enough of a reason to visit Elif, they are now offering diners a refund on their parking costs. Simply show a photograph of the parking ticket and they will deduct this from the bill, leaving you to enjoy a relaxed dining experience without the added worry of parking fees. If you’re looking for somewhere to hide away this winter, or are in search of great cocktails and authentic Turkish cuisine, take a turn onto the cobbles of The Courtyard and you will uncover a real treat.

f you suffer from joint pains, poor mobility or stress, why not give Thai massage a go? Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies explains the benefits. Thai massage has a positive impact on every system of the mind and body. It's meditative, so it soothes and calms the mind. Add to that the physical impact and you have a treatment that is going to help you feel better and improve your health mentally and physically. This massage is different from other western forms of massage in that there is no oil used, it takes place upon a soft mat on the floor and the massage is administered through loose-fitting clothing. The massage takes you through some deep stretches and mobilisations and so is often called ‘lazy man's yoga’. It is suitable for the very young and the elderly. What are the benefits? l Improved flexibility, increased sports performance l Eases pain and muscle tension and stress l Increases circulation l Stimulation of the immune system l Lifts mood creating a positive attitude l Corrects imbalances in posture l Stimulates the body’s own healing process

MAKE A SPLASH in Switzerland
Dive into the waters of Lake Zürich for a weekend break with a difference, writes Richard Abbey.
B
y definition, a city break is rarely relaxing, more often than not a whistle-stop tour of the best and brightest an urban sprawl has to offer. Jam-packed itineraries usually include arts, culture, shopping, eating, drinking – you even have to find time to sleep amongst all these things to do. So how about a short holiday with a difference? Less than a two-hour flight away, Zürich in Switzerland ticks all the right boxes for a quick getaway; arts and culture in abundance, high-class shopping, a good and varied choice when it comes to eating out and decent nightlife. But there’s one more thing that gives it the X-factor (or should that be Z-factor?) – the lake. It’s the heart of the Switzerland’s largest city in every way. Not only does it dominate the Alpine landscape, it seems to permeate the very lifestyles of the city-dwellers themselves. It’s easy to forget you’re in one of the financial capitals of the world with such an oasis of calm at the centre of it all. At 40km long and 3km wide, there is more than enough room to enjoy yourself and if you don’t fancy the do-it-yourself approach (sailing boat, pedalo, jet ski), a short cruise from
94
Bürkliplatz with Zürichsee is a good start to any short stay here and a relaxing way to spend 90 minutes. The summer weather and 30-degree temperatures inevitably brings out the best the lake – and the River Limmat – has to offer. In the warmer months they are transformed into a giant urban aquatic park with 30 lakeside and riverside bathing facilities (called ‘badis’) and almost 20 other open-air swimming baths. No other city in Europe has such a high concentration of bathing facilities per capita as Zürich. I used the Utoquai, a stone’s throw from my hotel. It costs 8 CHF (about £5.30) to enter – others are free to use – but for that you get three sun-deck areas (male, female and mixed), changing rooms, showers, lockers, a bar/café and unlimited use of the glorious lake. Torn between climbing in gracefully or bombing off the top diving board, I ended up somewhere in between and landed with a huge splash in the fresh, almost crystal clear water. With a temperature around the 23°C mark, it was delightfully refreshing and such a unique way to cool off. In the evening the badis remain just as popular, transforming into lively yet relaxing bars where you can enjoy a drink, something
to eat or some live music. I can highly recommend the Seebad Enge, which was laid back with great views of the lake (and the opportunity for another swim), while the Rimini bar, next to the Schanzengraben canal, had more of an open-air pre-club vibe. From the badis there are plenty of clubs to choose from. Zukunft in the Langstrasse area of the city, seems to be a popular choice and offers two floors of house and techno music. Heading out of the city a little is the formerly industrial area of Zürich West, the new ‘trendy’ area littered with clubs, bars, restaurants and shops. Frau Gerold’s Garten is an open-air oasis in the heart of the district, uniting a restaurant, shopping, art and a flower nursery. The garden is surrounded by three clubs – Hive, Supermarket and Helsinki. Elsewhere you’ll find the Viadukt, converted railway arches filled with over 50 shops, bars, restaurants and a market hall, and Freitag, the shipping-container home of the niche recycled bag company. Eating out in Zürich is a varied affair; you’ll find restaurants to suit every palate. But if you want to sample some traditional Swiss fare, you’ll need to try the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, Zürich-style sliced veal served with mushrooms in a cream sauce and rösti

(hash brown potatoes). There’s perhaps no better place to sample this dish than at Zunfthaus zur Waag, a 14th century former guild house, one of 14 in the city. For the uninitiated, the guild houses define the period between 1336 and 1798 when the master craftsmen and traders dominated the political landscape in the city. A French invasion brought an end to their rule but the guilds still remain with many of the old houses being converted to social venues. The Biedermeier-style dining room at Zunfthaus zur Waag is classically opulent, with fantastic stained glass windows overlooking Münsterhof Square. The food is well-cooked and presented and complemented by stunning Swiss wines. Elsewhere I enjoyed the showmanship at the Zeughauskeller, a 15th century former armoury, Restaurant Viadukt and Restaurant Quai 61, whose chargrilled ribs and crisp white Swiss wine were matched perfectly by the stunning vista of Lake Zürich. The standout dining experience during my visit, though, was the Rotisserie at the Hotel Storchen. The building, which dates back 650 years, has a medieval-style dining room and a pleasant terrace overlooking the River Limmat from which to enjoy the restaurant’s homemade pasta (the veal ravioli was delicious) and home-smoked salmon (exquisite).
While it may be hard to tear yourself away from the lake when the weather is so good, Zürich is the perfect base to explore this north-eastern part of Switzerland. Sixty minutes north of the city, and accessed through the town of Schauffhausen, is Europe’s largest waterfall – the Rhein Falls. A boat trip to the centre of the falls (8 CHF) is a must, if only just to take in the sheer atmosphere and noise of approximately 450,000 litres of water cascading down the falls every second. Closer to the city is Uetliberg, Zürich’s mountain. At 2,850 feet above sea level you can access the summit via train, a 15-minute ride from the central station, or walk or cycle one of the many trails that lead upwards. At the top you’ll find an unrivalled panorama of the city and lake as well as those picture postcard snow-capped Alps in the distance. If you’ve worked up an appetite on reaching the top, the Restaurant Uto Kulm serves a delicious buffet brunch with lots of local dishes on offer. The Hotel Ambassador à L’Opera is a more than adequate base for a stay in Zürich. Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, its location is ideal; behind the opera house and close to the lake, it is just a twominute walk from the Stadelhofen train station, perfect for a short 15-minute
commute to the airport. Its 45 bedrooms lend it a boutique atmosphere. The staff are extremely friendly and courteous while the bedrooms have everything you need for a pleasant stay, from electronically-controlled beds and a ‘pillow menu’ to in-room Nespresso machines and free wifi. The little touches like complimentary mineral water and the ‘apple of the month’ make it feel that bit more personal and homely. At the top of the neo-baroque building, which dates back to 1898, is the most stunning of roof terraces which affords views across the lake to one side and Zürich rooftops to the other. A particularly nice touch was the invitation for all guests to join staff on the roof each Friday evening for a complimentary glass of Swiss wine and barbecue. A delicious hot and cold buffet breakfast is served in the hotel’s Opera restaurant each morning, which is worth a visit if only to marvel at Tatjana Tiziana’s stunning baroque opera-themed mural, which she painted in ten days. It might have 50 museums, 100 galleries, high-class shopping and great restaurants but for me, as much as Zürich has to offer, you can’t help coming back to the lake. With the sun shining, you just want to jump right in.

Continuing success When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre.
I
t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most

up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak.You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argonfilled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted
with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for yearround use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. Yorkshire Wildlife Park charity ball A spectacular charity ball at the awardwinning Yorkshire Wildlife Park has raised almost £10,000 for animal welfare and conservation – with money still being generated from an online auction. The Snow Ball was held in aid of Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation charity, which is fast becoming a major force in the protection and welfare of endangered species around the world. More than 100 guests enjoyed a champagne reception and four-course dinner in the Tsavo Lodge, accompanied by live music and followed by a grand auction. Prizes, including an African safari holiday, were donated by businesses from Doncaster and further afield. “We are so grateful for all the support local businesses of the ball,” said Cheryl Williams, Trustee of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation. “Our vision is to create a better world for wild animals and every penny raised will go to vital conservation and welfare projects.” The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation is looking for local businesses to help fundraise or get involved with the charity. Equinox Ball The glittering Equinox Ball, held at the Doncaster Deaf Trust, was another huge success and beat last year’s efforts by raising a whopping £45,875. The event, which supports Cancer Research and Firefly, was hosted by Paul and Sarah Mullen of local business L&P Mullen Building Contractors and supported by Adam O’Neill, Danny Oakes and JoJo Kelly from Capital FM Breakfast Show. Guests enjoyed a live auction, where they could bid on a week-long all-inclusive holiday to St Lucia or a diamond pendant from Time for Diamonds. Guests also had the chance to win a Mulberry handbag, kindly donated by Robinsons of Bawtry. Last year’s event raised £38,000 and helped Firefly buy a new vehicle to transport more cancer patients to Sheffield for lifechanging treatment. The new Firefly Express was aptly named after Paul’s parents, Bob and Carol Mullen, who lost their battle to cancer two years ago, inspiring the couple to host the event. Yule Eve event – perfect for Christmas
On 20 December Everton Farm Shop are hosting a Yule Eve event. This wonderfully festive evening will include a wild boar roast, lighting of the yule log and mulled wine/wassail.
Elements tried and tested results Last month, Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume put dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to the test. Results from these treatments are gradual and three weeks after her visit, we can reveal the outcome. Rebecca had injections to target forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines, and as you can see, these areas are now significantly smoother. When asked how she felt about the outcome, Rebecca said: “I am very impressed with the results and have so much more confidence. The whole service, including the aftercare, has been brilliant and Sandy is evidently a very experienced and professional practitioner.” To view more of Element’s glowing reviews, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook/ElementsMediSpa or to book a free, no-obligation consultation, contact Elements on 01302 343432 today.
