Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.

M

ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.

And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the

freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. ES Restaurant Awards

Words: Stephanie Burns and Fiona Barber Photography: Mark Rodgers

And the winners are… The cream of the region’s restaurant trade turned out for Eastside’s glittering annual awards ceremony. But who came out on top?

A

s the great and good of the region’s restaurant scene gathered at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry for the third Eastside Restaurant Awards, it was clear that local dining was in excellent health. Now firmly established as a real celebration for the diverse collection of restaurants in the Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts area, the awards are a chance to showcase just what makes our local eateries so special. Greeted by a chilled glass of Prosecco, our guests gathered to toast this unrivalled quality – and discover who had won the big prizes. Our team of reviewers took great pleasure in assessing the region’s finest food venues. But, as ever, choosing the winners was not easy. Judging covered every aspect of the restaurant experience, from the quality of the food and service to the ambience and cleanliness, and our final list of winners was only chosen after great deliberation and debate. Picking up the ultimate prize as Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year was Roccos in Tickhill. Having already scooped the gong for Best Italian, Roccos bowled over our judges with a beautifully balanced menu of authentic regional dishes, outstanding service and an incredibly warm, friendly atmosphere. Roccos had been shortlisted for our big award alongside two more restaurants judged

8

to have been outstanding over the last 12 months – The Old Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse and Relish in Doncaster. The competition was tougher than ever and choosing the winners in all categories was no easy task. We were grateful to two independent guest judges, Doncaster College curriculum head Amanda Gleadall and Eastside reader Heather Smith, for their help in the decision making. Amanda trains the next generation of chefs – and quite a few of her former students

were working in the restaurants up for awards this year – while Heather, who won a competition to join our panel, is a residential care worker who enjoys dining out as a way of relaxing away from her challenging profession. The evening was co-hosted by two familiar figures on the local restaurant scene, Andy Miller and Andy Longworth, who opened Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie earlier this year and have enjoyed great success. By their side were Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore and sales executive Rebecca Hume, who presented the winners with their awards. Both ladies looked stunning in Forever Unique and Sherri Hill dresses from Chique, the Armthorpe boutique that dresses the region’s most stylish ladies. Once the awards had been dished out and every last morsel of the banquet had been polished off, it was over to DJ Paul of Eyeball Entertainments, who kept people dancing until the early hours. The Crown Hotel provided a spectacular backdrop for this glittering event and, as you would expect from our 2015 Best Hotel winner, the six-course menu was outstanding and the room looked magnificent. Our thanks go to Craig Dowie and every member of the Crown staff for pulling out all the stops to make the evening such a success.

Best Italian and Restaurant of the Year Roccos Roccos scooped two awards this year and were deserved winners of both Best Italian and Restaurant of the Year. This family-friendly Italian is versatile enough to be the perfect setting for a big celebration and an intimate meal for two. Owner Alex Calzini said: “I feel very, very proud. The Eastside Restaurant Awards are a great event for the whole industry and recognise the hard work that goes into running restaurants. Everyone here is a winner – we were just very lucky that when the judges came everything was right on the night.” Sous chef Oliver Ellis said it was humbling to be recognised. “We’re not jut a rustic Italian; we are passionate about putting a twist on things and trying out modern interpretations in our specials.”

Best Bar/Grill Relish This contemporary bar and grill combines good food, drinks, a friendly service and a warm, relaxed atmosphere. Known for their fantastic cocktail menu and regular live music, Relish is always buzzing with customers. Their menu has proved extremely popular too, with a great selection of pizzas, pastas, grills, burgers and chef’s daily specials. Owners Paul and Beck Moullali were delighted to win the award: “We feel very enthusiastic and it’s great for the local community. We have grafted for eight years and a lot of people say we changed the area. It’s all for the people of Doncaster.”

Best Pub Restaurant Blacksmiths Arms, Everton The Blacksmiths Arms at Everton looks every bit your cosy country pub, but there is more to this establishment than simple pub grub and beer. The Wild Boar Restaurant and Grill offers customers an innovative menu of pub classics as well as more contemporary dishes. “It feels really good to win the award and although it’s closing down we get to end on a high,” explained owners Dave and Mandy Wallis. “We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic staff or customers. It has been a lovely five years but it’s time to step back a bit now.”

Readers’ Choice Mumbai This unassuming Stainforth restaurant has been winning rave reviews from those who take the time to seek it out, and it far surpassed all other online entries in our quest to find Eastside readers’ favourite eatery. Owner Zubair Malik was delighted to have won. “I think it’s even better than winning the best Indian category because this has been voted for by our customers, which shows how much feedback we have. It’s the first year we have entered the Eastside Restaurant Awards and we’re really glad we did!”

Best Newcomer Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse Opening Bawtry’s newest addition to great acclaim earlier this year, John and Sarah Coleman are already making a name for themselves in Bawtry and beyond with flavoursome pizzas and expertly cooked steaks. John said: “We’ve only been open six months and we really didn’t expect to win the award so we’re really happy. We have created a homely atmosphere and serve up 18 different sizes of steaks – from 7oz to 72oz – which includes everything from rump to t-bone. Affordability is really important, and we try to cater for everyone.” Â 10

Best Contemporary The Old Weighing Room Just metres from the racetrack, this relatively new addition to Doncaster Racecourse has a familiar buzz – even on non race days. With an imaginative menu, a slick setting and friendly staff, they have found a recipe for success. Head chef Richard Robinson said: “We are so excited to have won – especially as we won best newcomer last year. This was 18 months in the planning and a lot of work went into creating an exciting, contemporary menu with lots of locally sourced ingredients. We’re now really looking forward to Christmas and can’t wait for people to try our great new festive menu.”

Best Hotel Restaurant The Crown Hotel This four-star hotel is renowned as one of the best places to eat, drink and stay in Doncaster. Located in the heart of Bawtry, the Crown delivers everything from a drink with friends to a function for hundreds with style. Managing director Craig Dowie said: “We have been proud to host the Eastside Restaurant Awards each year and are delighted to have picked up the trophy for Best Hotel. We have a great team here, including our fantastic head chef Caz who has been with us for more than 30 years and new restaurant manager Sophie Germany who will be bringing in some new ideas to the restaurant.”

Best Indian Aagrah Part of a collection of family run Indian restaurants across Yorkshire, this well-established restaurant continues to wow the curry lovers of Doncaster, with authentic recipes served in stylish surroundings. Owner Asif Ali said: “This is the third year running we have won this award – hopefully we can carry it on for the next few years! It is thanks to a lot of hard work and effort from all the staff. We bring together a family atmosphere, great food and friendly staff to provide an atmosphere where people feel really welcome.”

ES Food

Success lies in the land

It’s the lush grazing on the floodplain of the River Idle that makes Everton Farm Shop’s meat so tasty.

T

here’s no denying how difficult recent times have been for British farmers and many have had to diversify or transform their business completely, in a bid to continue making a living doing something they love. This couldn’t be truer of R.Troop and Son of Everton who, for three generations grew root vegetables, peas, sugar beet and wheat in the Idle Valley. But after flooding from the River Idle became so detrimental that crops had to be taken out, it was time for drastic action. Husband-and-wife team Richard and Danielle Troop started converting riverbank land into grazing land almost a decade ago, and in 2014 they opened Everton Farm Shop selling meat direct to the public. After winning two national awards in the biggest gourmet food competition in the country for livestock grazed on that land, they undoubtedly made the right decision. “We were delighted to win 2015 Great Taste Awards for both our beef and lamb as it’s the first competition we’ve entered and we are the only producer in Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire or Derbyshire to have achieved this.” Danielle says. “Our main beef supply is Jersey crossed with Hereford cattle because Jersey has really great flavour but is exceptionally lean, and Hereford has a good amount of fat.” Their shoulder of lamb was also judged to be in the same category as the renowned Salt Marsh Lamb of the Gower Peninsula. Such speedy success is rare, and Danielle

FUTURE PLANS • The history of the Idle Valley will soon be available to view on a frieze in the Yurt. Expertly drawn up by Matt Deakin of Drakeholes, it will tell the story of wetlands, drainage and back to wetlands again over 1,000 years. • Keep an eye out for the shop website to be launched very soon. says they have an advantage over other meat producers as their floodplain grazing is of exceptionally high quality. “Our animals enjoy conservation-grade grazing and we are convinced that the quality of this is the making of our product.” Everton Farm Shop also sells free-range pork/pork products and cold-pressed rapeseed oil from crops grown on the farm. Pollybell organic veg, which is exported all over the UK and Ireland, is grown within a mile of the farm and provides the perfect

accompaniment to their award-winning meat. For the perfect after-dinner experience, Everton Farm Shop can also furnish you with an outstanding range of British cheeses. Although Everton Farm Shop is primarily a retail butcher’s and a shop filled with delicious produce, they also supply meat to local businesses. The Blue Bell at Lound has exclusivity on their sausages and the Town House in Bawtry has exclusivity on their rump steak. Once the Christmas rush has subsided, Michelin-star restaurants will be targeted with awardwinning products. Everton Farm Shop is now taking orders for Christmas. Make sure to get your order in before November 30 for guaranteed delivery. There is also a fabulous three-bird roast on offer – pheasant in a chicken in a goose (all free range/wild) – perfect as a real showstopper for Christmas day. You’ll find quality Indian food and excellent service in stylish and sophisticated surroundings at Yash.

Spice up your life

T

here’s no better way of warming up during the chilly winter months than with a delicious spicy curry. We Britons have a long and passionate affair with Indian cuisine, which dates all the way back to 1809 when Sake Dean Mahomed opened Britain's first curry establishment. When chicken tikka massala was declared Britain’s national dish in 2012, it confirmed our passion for Indian dishes even further. We are now completely spoilt for choice, not only when it comes to selecting a curry, but a restaurant – which begs the question, how do you choose where to go? Of course the quality of food should take precedence, but style and top-notch customer service should also play a part. As well as serving fantastic fresh food,Yash in Retford gives customers an experience that rivals the region’s top restaurants. After many years in the restaurant business, Shaddi Rahman opened Yash in 2013. With the help of brother and talented chef Mohibur Rahman, owner Shaddi has developed a menu that offers many of the usual favourites, along with an impressive selection of fish dishes that you don’t see in many Indian restaurants. Their specialties are particularly popular, especially the Macch Ar Bhat, a salmon fillet marinated in a special rich sauce, cooked in the tandoori oven with medium spices and served with plain rice. The lamb shank is another firm favourite, cooked in a rich medium garlic sauce with kidney beans and coriander.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

While Yash is big on taste, they also cook with an eye on your health. Shaddi says: “Many of our customers comment on how little oil we use. We try to show people that Indian food does not have to be full of fat.” They also only use the finest quality lamb, chicken, vegetables and spices in the preparation of all their dishes. Yash are not only considerate when it comes to your health, they are also a business which contributes to the local

community. Shaddi and his team are looking forward to hosting a charity event later in the year. Shaddi said: “It’s a fundraiser event for Retford Hospital where we will be serving some great dishes and providing an evening of entertainment for all the family.” The fundraiser is planned to take place some time before Christmas, so watch this space. When you dine at Yash, you’ll not only enjoy the food, but the relaxed atmosphere, cosy interior and outstanding service from a professional team. ES Christmas

Bawtry Christmas Sunday 22nd November 2015 From 1pm – 8pm

T

he recipe for a perfect Christmas always seems to pivot around three things; family, good organisation and lots of fun festive activities. And this year, you’ll have no excuse not to get involved, as the picturesque market town of Bawtry will be kicking off the festive season with a Sunday spectacular. On Sunday 22 November from 1pm until 8pm, the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) is hosting a stunning Bawtry Christmas Time event enveloping the main street and quaint courtyards, as well as many of the town’s retailers, cafes and restaurants, which will have extended opening hours on the day. If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, the event will be a brilliant opportunity to find some special gifts for your loved ones. “This is our third Christmas event and it has grown in size and stature each year, so 2015 will be a real spectacle for all the family,” said Rebecca Dickenson Chair of the Bawtry Retail Association. “We’re hosting it a little earlier than before so that visitors can buy their gifts with us, as well as start their festive season by perhaps indulging in a delicious hog roast, hot chocolate or celebratory cocktail.” The Christmas attractions will include a traditional carousel ( with a contribution kindly donated by Bawtry Town Council), fairground rides, live music including Harworth Colliery Brass Band, market stalls selling a range of gifts, food and drink, and should weather conditions allow, Father Christmas will also be calling in on his sleigh courtesy of Tickhill Lions. Players and mascots from Doncaster Rovers and Doncaster Knights will be dropping in and Christmas in Bawtry wouldn’t be the same without the legendary unveiling of the Womack’s Christmas window. The BRA are also inviting retailers in the town to embrace the sentiments of the season and decorate their windows with festive displays.

18

This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before, with both sides of Market Hill filled with stalls and activities for all the family. This means there will be no parking in this area, but thanks to Wilfreda Beehive, there will be a free park-and-ride shuttle bus service in operation that will run every half hour from Hudson’s Yard. Rebecca has already had an amazing surge of support from local retailers and residents alike and hopes she can spread the festive joy even further this year. “We’ve had a great team this year that have approached the event with vigour and enthusiasm to create an event that people both young and old can enjoy,” said Rebecca. “We are so looking forward to welcoming regular and new visitors to the event and creating a real community atmosphere that truly captures the spirit of the season.” So gather your family, grab a mulled wine or hot chocolate and start your Christmas with a bang in Bawtry.

ES Theatre

In pursuit of Beryl Cast’s latest show showcases the life of a Yorkshire sporting heroine

C

elebrating the story of Beryl Burton and the Yorkshire woman’s cycle through life, Beryl is the stage-writing debut of actor Maxine Peake that comes to Cast, Doncaster on Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 November. The critically acclaimed play about the loves, trials and tribulations of the down-toearth Yorkshire sporting heroine stars Samantha Power (Little Britain and Coronation Street) in the title role of cycling champion Beryl Burton, and Rebecca Ryan (Channel 4’s Shameless). Originally written for Radio 4 in 2012 and adapted for last year’s world premiere staging at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the play looks back at the extraordinary sporting achievements of the Leeds-born cyclist. It was 1954 when Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton. In those days they cycled in clubs and once Beryl started she was smitten, not only with Charlie but by the thrill and freedom found on two wheels. Beryl was better than good, she was the best and determined to stay that way. Five times world pursuit champion, thirteen times national champion,

twice road-racing world champion and 12 times national champion, she was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived. Her down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach to life and to success is an inspiration to us all. Beryl’s daughter Denise Burton-Cole welcomes the revival of the play. “We are thrilled as it’s an outstanding play and it’s great that more people will see it,” she says. Maxine Peake has a career that spans stage, TV and film, garnering critical acclaim in roles as diverse as Dinnerladies’ Twinkle and Silk’s Martha Costello QC. Winning the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for her performances in Criminal Justice and The Street, she was also nominated as Best Actress in the prestigious BAFTA awards for

The Village and Hancock & Joan. She recently played Hamlet in a ‘radical re-imagining’ of Shakespeare’s play at Manchester’s Royal Exchange. Beryl is directed by Rebecca Gatward whose TV credits include Eastenders, Casualty, Doctors and Sadie J for the BBC, and whose stage productions include The Trial of Dennis The Menace (Southbank Centre) and The Comedy of Errors, The Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare’s Globe). She also restaged This Is Our Youth with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck at the Garrick Theatre. Following the critical acclaim as the theatrical highlight of the Yorkshire Festival for the 2014 Tour de France, Beryl returned for a sell-out run at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in June this year before embarking on the ‘Tour de Beryl’ which rides into Doncaster in November. Tickets for Beryl from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 November at Cast are £17 / £14 concessions, and £14 matinee tickets, available on 01302 303 959 or by visiting castindoncaster.com. Naturally younger Less is more when it comes to tackling lines and wrinkles at Elements Medispa.

W

e are constantly bombarded with images of celebrities who have taken cosmetic surgery too far. All too often, they look nothing like their former selves, or worse, like caricatures of themselves. However, used responsibly, both antiwrinkle injections and dermal fillers can achieve great results and continue to be the most trusted and widely used alternatives to going under the knife. Anti-wrinkle injections work directly on the muscles underneath the skin, to prevent or reduce the creases that form on the skin’s surface when the muscles contract (crow’s feet when smiling for example, or lines between the brows when frowning). Results from these injections are gradual as the muscle movement reduces, with the final results being achieved between two to three weeks. Clients can expect to enjoy a more youthful and well-rested appearance for up to four months. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injected directly into the skin or lips to correct lines and wrinkles or add volume. Results from these injections are instant, and can last from six to 12 months. Clinical director and nurse prescriber Sandy Green has seen at first hand over the last 13 years how her clients can achieve a noticeable, but natural look. “Less is certainly more. As you age it’s

about giving you back what you had, not creating something new.” Sandy opened Elements MediSpa on South Parade in 2003, before moving the centre to a much larger, more luxurious building on Thorne Road, Doncaster in 2006. Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume put anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers to the test. After a thorough face-to-face consultation to check her medical history and assess her needs, Sandy explained that she would be administering anti-wrinkle injections in six areas; the frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead, bunny lines, chin and the

corners of the mouth, followed by Restylane dermal filler to enhance the lips and correct peri-oral lines. After a quick educational explanation of these muscle groups, Rebecca sat back, relaxed to the soothing spa music and let Sandy work her magic. Rebecca was then offered a follow-up appointment in two weeks’ time to make sure she was happy with the results and to check if any top-ups were required. Rebecca says: “I was so impressed by the whole process. I felt relaxed and it didn’t hurt at all. Sandy is a very professional and confident practitioner. I was amazed at how attentive she was. From the moment I booked the appointment, to the thorough after-care, it’s been an all-round outstanding service. People have some strange ideas about hypnosis. Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies sifts the facts from the fiction.

M

ention hypnosis and people tend to think of stage shows and people being persuaded to do ridiculous and unusual things. Let’s dispel these myths and allow people to experience the wonderful benefits of hypnosis to enhance their lives.

Can people with a strong will be hypnotized? Yes, intelligent people can be hypnotized faster because they have greater access to their imagination, and can follow instructions. In fact, those with an extremely low intelligence cannot be hypnotized at all. The biggest prerequisite to someone being able to be hypnotized is their willingness.

Pamper yourself with a little luxurious spa time and forget all about the winter blues.

What is hypnosis like? There is a feeling of well-being. The hypnotic state is like a meditation, where the body is relaxed but the mind has heightened awareness. Limbs feel leaden or light, tingly or a little numb. The perception of time is also distorted where an hour might seem like a few minutes. All hypnotized subjects may be relaxed but research shows they are perfectly capable of saying no, or terminating hypnosis all by themselves. What can hypnotherapy be used for? The list is endless, anxiety, weight loss, stress, depression, OCD, panic attacks, phobias, public speaking, competition nerves, pain control and a whole lot more.

Mr Kazzazi

The Natural Look Clinic and its surgical lead Mr Kazzazi are pleased to introduce their new dental services. Vipul Pawar

Brush up your smile!

S

miling can be an ordeal when you don’t like the look of your teeth, but there is a professional and relatively painless solution for you at the Natural Look Clinic in Doncaster. The clinic specialises in lots of medical cosmetic procedures, but now also offers dental procedures including whitening and a number of alternatives to traditional braces. General Practitioner Vipul Pawar BDS, MJDF (RCS Eng) has been with the Natural Look Clinic for six months, and has been practising dentistry for the past seven years, after completing numerous cosmetic courses including a course with one of the UK’s most prominent aesthetic and cosmetic dentists, Dr Christopher Orr. As an established and independent private dental practice providing both clinical and cosmetic treatments, the dentistry receives patients, not only from the local area, but from all over the country.

52

Vipul works in all aspects of dentistry, but has recently introduced Invisalign as a teeth straightening option for adults. Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custommade specifically for your teeth. “Patients love these aligners. They are simple to use and fit their lifestyles perfectly,” says Vipul. “They are sophisticated clear braces, not just gum shields.” “Our virtual 3D treatment plan, ClinCheck® shows the series of movements your teeth are projected to go through over the course of the treatment – so you can see how your teeth are expected to look at the end of your Invisalign treatment before it even begins.” The Natural Look Clinic also provides clinical photography before and after you have had your treatment, so you can see what a difference it has made. As you replace each aligner every two weeks, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week, gradually moving towards their projected final position. Comfortable, clear and removable, Invisalign transforms your smile without disrupting your life and is something that over three million people worldwide have already discovered. Vipul is also an authorised Six Month Smile provider. Six Month Smiles come as subtle tooth coloured wires

called Lucid-Lok® clear brackets. As their name suggests, they aim to align your teeth in just six months. If you are more pushed for time, Inman aligners can be used to align front teeth quickly and safely. The only difference is, they promise to adjust your smile in a matter of weeks rather than months. This treatment is cost effective and depending on how much work you need, it can be effective in just six to 18 weeks. Whitening has become particularly popular at the practice, with Enlighten providing an extra level of whitening. Performed in-house this is much safer than previous whitening products. Depending on your lifestyle, your pearly whites can last up to five years. So whether you need a simple filling or a more complicated procedure, Natural Look Clinic’s dentistry offers everything under one roof. Performed by competent and trustworthy practitioners, they also offer the most competitive prices around. Contact the Natural Look Clinic today to book a consultation.

It’s a record breaker! Robinsons of Bawtry give Yorkshire Cancer Research a £30,000 boost after another spectacular fashion show. Words: Stephanie Burns

I

t may have seemed a tall order to smash through a £300,000 fundraising ceiling. But customers of the awardwinning fashion boutique Robinsons of Bawtry have done it with the annual fashion show, which this year raised over £30,000. It is 23 years since the boutique’s previous owner, Tony Robinson, launched the fashion show for Yorkshire Cancer Research in memory of his late wife. Since the Jones family took over ownership in 2009, they have continued to host the show and are incredibly proud of its continuing success. Russell Jones, director of Robinsons of Bawtry, said: “Once again, we had a fantastic evening and are delighted to have shared it with so many of our loyal customers. It was the most money we have ever generated from our fashion show and are grateful to the generosity of everyone who shared the iconic event with us.” During the evening, guests were treated to a spectacle of fashion, food and glamorous

A great evening’s entertainment was provided by violinist Alexandra Parker, Rat Pack Singing Waiters, Supreme Showgirls and NYA as Whitney Houston. A Champagne draw, auction and raffle added to the extra fun and the fundraising pot. Charles Rowett, chief executive officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “The Robinsons of Bawtry Annual Fashion Show was once again an outstanding event. It continues to be one of the most prestigious evenings in our calendar attended by businesses and people from across the region. As a regional charity we rely solely on the kindness and generosity of local people and our thanks go to Russell, Wendy and James and everyone that attended for making this such an exciting and successful night.” The designer boutique is a popular destination for ladies and gents in the area, attracting customers from miles around for the calibre of clothing and service on offer. ES Travel Words: Chris Wilson

Halfpenny Bridge over the River Liffey

Discover the craic With new regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there’s never been a better time to explore Dublin. Don’t forget to enjoy a Guinness or two...

R

eligion and alcohol, according to the driver giving a drolly humorous if decidedly non-pc commentary on our Dublin sightseeing bus, have always been the downfall of the Irish people. Next stop, he added without a pause, for St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse. Dubliners have a way with words, there’s no denying it; this is a city that is proud of its literary tradition. There are statues and museums commemorating the works of James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw and co., and you only have to settle in with a pint and eavesdrop in one of the many fine pubs to realise that a love of language remains in the blood to this day. But that is just one of the many attractions that make Dublin such a popular short break destination. The Irish capital has always been just a short hop across the sea and, now there are regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there has never been a better time to explore for yourself. Dublin airport is 12km north of the centre, so it’s only a half-hour journey into the city. Importantly, if you are paying a first visit and don’t want to waste time, it is easy to get your bearings. The city settles snugly into the arc of Dublin Bay and is divided by the River Liffey. The Royal Canal to the north and the Stephen’s Green Grand Canal to the south roughly contain the city centre. Those hop-on, hop-off tourist charabancs are a pretty good way to get around and they’ll take you to most of the main tourist destinations in the city, but first you need to find good central accommodation and for location and comfort St Stephen’s Green Hotel is hard to beat. This smart, contemporary hotel is in a prime spot,

56

overlooking the nine-acre St Stephen’s Green Park, which is the largest enclosed city square in Europe. It dates back to the 17th century but the layout is pure Victorian with fountains, lawns, mature trees, ducks and a bandstand. The park is ideal for an early morning stroll, just the thing to give you an appetite for the hotel’s splendid full Irish breakfast which will most definitely set you up for the day. What to do? With so many attractions, it is probably wise to have a few ‘musts’ on your checklist and plan ahead. For those of a partying persuasion (and Dublin is one of the most popular choices for stag and hen dos) this means heading for the cobbled streets of Temple Bar, which are packed with bars and clubs offering refreshments, loud live music and a party atmosphere into the small hours. One sniffy local told me that the closer you get to Temple Bar, the more the price of a pint rises and the chances of hearing a Dublin accent falls. It’s certainly bright and brash but let’s face it, if you are in the city for a big night out, you’ll find what you want here rather than a tour of grand architecture and galleries. If you prefer your night time entertainment with the volume turned down a few notches, the rest of the city is packed with great restaurants and friendly, civilised bars. A couple of great examples are Toners and Donaghey & Nisbett, both on Toner Street, or Peruke and Periwig on Dawson Street. From the pleasant tree-lined squares of Trinity College to the elegant Georgian buildings, there are rewarding views at every turn and one of the best is just a few yards from the hotel. The Little Museum of Dublin is one of the newest, and best, attractions in the city. All the items on display have been

donated by Dubliners and to spend an hour in these rooms is a great way to top up your knowledge of Irish history, politics, literature and music. History is everywhere in Dublin, with traces of a tempestuous past all around. For a refresher course in the 1916 uprising and the great famine, a tour of Kilmainham Gaol Museum is warmly recommended. The austere setting may be chillingly familiar; the building’s restoration was funded by renting the venue out as a film set for many famous movies, from The Italian Job to Michael Collins and In The Name of the Father. Another inescapable factor in Dublin’s history is the invention of Guinness, one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is now brewed in 60 countries, and remains the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland. The Guinness Storehouse is a huge museum over seven floors that attracts tourists in their thousands from dawn to dusk. The story of how the burnt flavour that is derived from roasted unmalted barley was developed is slickly told, with plenty of interactive elements, and it’s worth the visit just for the fabulous 360degree views of the city from the glass-domed Gravity Bar on the top floor. You might as well have a taste of the dark stuff while you are here; there’s a ‘free’ pint factored into the price of every ticket. For shoppers, Grafton Street is the place for plush independent stores like the very swanky Brown Thomas. Despite recent economic troubles, there still seems to be a fair bit of money sloshing around, and if you are feeling flush this is the upmarket area to exchange your euros for fancy designer brands in fashion, beauty and homewares. Dining out in Dublin can be pretty high-end too. Join the smartly dressed set for delicious steak and seafood in Fire, a fine dining restaurant in an historic building right beside the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s residence, or for something a little less dressy but just as tasty, Fallon & Byrne is a brasserie-style restaurant above a food hall and wine shop. So much to do, so little time… I never did get to see Riverdance, which is still packing the tourists in every night two decades on from that Eurovison moment. Perhaps I missed out; I dare say they’ll carry on dancing for another 20 years.

The world famous Guinness Storehouse

ES Celebrations

A very special celebration When Charlotte Greaves, owner of Funky Fascinators, and her husband Michael decided to renew their wedding vows in celebration of their 20th anniversary, they chose a venue they knew would rise to the challenge – The Crown Hotel in Bawtry.

58

I

t was about three years ago that my husband, Michael, and I decided we would celebrate our 20th anniversary by renewing our vows and hosting a big celebration. We began planning around 18 months ago so we could make sure everything was just perfect. Having worked with The Crown Hotel for seven years – providing the ladies with their headwear for the races and all sorts of special events – I have become good friends with the team over the years. What started off as a business relationship has blossomed into a friendship and they’re like family to me now. We didn’t even consider holding our celebration anywhere else as we knew the Crown would be the very best place for it. The food is cracking, the staff are fantastic and we just love the Hogarth Suite, especially when it’s dressed in the beautiful White Rose Occasions drapes and decorations. We invited 110 guests to the renewal and for an hour before the ceremony we treated everyone to Prosecco and chocolate-dipped strawberries while Alexandra, the electric violinist, played in the background. It was the

perfect start to the day. The priest who married us 20 years ago came out of retirement for the day to conduct the service. He was as funny today as he had been in 1995 and he had the whole room in stitches. What Michael and our guests didn’t know was that I had a few surprises up my sleeve. I had arranged for Edmond Wells, a John Cleese impersonator, to burst in part-way through the ceremony. Michael’s face as Basil Fawlty and Manuel came storming down the aisle was priceless, and they stayed in character all day. The guests had never seen anything like it and everybody found it hilarious. I had also hired The Best Singing Waiters.

These two guys blended in as Crown waiters, pouring wine and seeing to guests, before suddenly bursting into song during the meal. By 5pm, they had every guest on their feet doing the conga before dessert had even been served! That is my favourite memory of the whole day. Later on in the evening, we had a magician, John Morton, who wowed everyone with some unbelievable tricks. On the tables, each lady had a goody bag with a sparkling Swarovski pen and a glittered champagne flute, and the men had glittered shot glasses, mini bottles of Grey Goose and a Euromillions ticket for that night. It was little touches like this that made the day even more special. Our daughter Blythe was the most amazing help in organising everything – she even put crystals on 100 pairs of flip

Charlotte and her daughter Blythe

flops for guests whose feet were hurting by the evening. The Crown’s head chef Caz is fantastic and we knew the food would be amazing as we’ve eaten at the hotel on lots of occasions, but it was so nice to see our guests enjoying it too and everyone commented on how good it was. There was a choice of three starters (tomato and basil soup, trio of seafood or baked goats cheese), two mains (topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding or chicken breast stuffed with an apricot and cranberry sausage meat), and three desserts (warm chocolate brownie, lemon tart or Yorkshire cheese platter). We also had a chocolate fountain, loads of cupcakes and a fruit table with beautiful carvings from Cupcakes 2 Love, and Sonya from The Classic & Contemporary Cake Co. made a gorgeous cake. At night, we had 180 guests in total, who tucked into a lovely buffet while The Steve Love Band and DJ Paul kept everyone entertained. One of my closest friends is Tracey Hilton, who owns Charlotte’s Florist in Hatfield. She did just as brilliant a job for our renewal as she did for our wedding, with a selection of roses, orchids and lilies. At the end of what had been the most amazing day, Michael and I stayed in the luxurious room 501. It is huge with a sunken king-sized bed, a double walk-in shower and a lounge area so it felt really special. The hotel’s managing director, Craig Dowie, also arranged for my daughter and my niece to stay in the traditional suite, room one, which has a big jacuzzi bath – they were so excited. Craig also got all the staff to help us unpack the car when we arrived on the Thursday night, and sent a bottle of Champagne up to our room to get the celebrations started. From the moment we booked, the Crown made sure everything went perfectly. Their attention to detail is second to none and they helped us to create memories that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.” The Crown Hotel High Street, Bawtry, Doncaster DN10 6JW Tel: 01302 710341 www.crownhotel-bawtry.com

Sleep tight Cosy up this Christmas with a new bed, mattress or chair from The Bed Shop.

A

s late night Christmas shopping in the freezing cold becomes a regular occurrence, one thing that will keep you going is the thought of coming home to

unwind. What better way to relax than snuggling up in a warm bed? Whether it’s a king size, an electric bed or a new spring mattress, The Bed Shop can help you survive the cold months this winter. The Bed Shop was established over 40 years ago and although there are six branches in total, they still consider themselves a local business for local people. Having been around for so long, The Bed Shop has seen its excellent reputation grow, resulting in a lot of repeat and word-of-mouth business. Keith Winter, store manager, says: “Being such a long-standing business means people have built up a lot of trust with us. It’s very rare that anyone has any problems with our products, but it’s reassuring for customers to know that if they did we would still be here to sort it out for them. Our excellent customer service has given us a great reputation and it’s always nice to be recommended by others – it happens a lot. Not long ago we sold a bed to a young woman who was recommended to us by her parents, whose bed they had bought from us when she was still in a pushchair. It’s nice to hear, but it does make you feel old!” The Bed Shop has a large selection of

beautiful bedroom furntiure and matresses in appealing styles and finishes, and also sells divans, bed frames, furniture, electric beds and recline chairs, which are currently on an introductory offer. “We pride ourselves on an excellent delivery service and top brand beds at the lowest prices,” said Keith. The Bed Shop’s delivery service is free of charge. They can also dispose of your old bed.The shop always has discounts and offers. Their main offer at the minute is a free

upgrade to a king-size bed if you buy a double on selected models, and drawers free of charge. So why not cosy up this Christmas with a new bed, mattress or recline chair? When the new year comes around and the weather gets even colder, you’ll never have been more grateful for a touch of home comfort. The Bed Shop 37 Hallgate, Doncaster, DN1 3NR Tel: 01302 369034

Luxury by the Lakeside New homes released at The Residence as first home buyers put down roots.

A

s the first residents settle in to their new homes at The Residence, Muse Developments’ scheme in the desirable Lakeside area of Doncaster, the developer is urging buyers to act fast if they are planning on starting the New Year in a brand new property at this sought-after location. The winning combination of thoughtful design, beautiful craftsmanship and a stunning waterside location have resonated with local buyers who have flocked to the Lakeside development, with 16 properties snapped up since its launch in June. To accommodate the high demand, the award-winning developer has released further three and four bedroom homes which are available to buy now. Comments Hollie Reynolds, sales and marketing manager at Muse: “It’s great to see the first home-owners moving in and creating a community here. The feedback we’ve had so far is that our residents just love the location; the beautiful lakeside scenery and parks close

by, as well as restaurants, a cinema and shops within walking distance, not to mention Lakeside Village and Doncaster Dome just down the road. The mix of our modern, high quality homes with the cosmopolitan vibe and serene waterside setting has proved a winning formula and we’d encourage any tentative buyers looking to move in the next few months to act quickly to secure a home here.” The Residence, which features a charming collection of 51 luxury two, three and four bedroom homes at the edge of more than 50 acres of lake, has attracted interested from a mix of buyers; with first-time buyers, second steppers, parent purchasers and investors amongst the first to secure a home in this sought-after waterside location. “I love my house!” Big smiles from new buyer at The Gables, Doncaster.

T

wenty-eight-yearold dental nurse Julie Garbutt watched eagerly from her place of work at the Orthodontic Centre as the homes at Muse Development’s The Gables started to take shape. Doncaster born and bred, when Julie decided the time was right to buy her first home, The Gables was the clear choice as she liked the modern style of the houses and the contemporary feel to the whole neighbourhood. Having left home in 2011 and rented for a few years, Julie moved back in with her parents as she waited for her dream home to be built. She finally completed and moved into a twobed, three-storey ‘Ashton’ town house at the end of the summer. Julie’s ‘Ashton’ home features an open-plan

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

living and dining area that runs the full length of the home and opens out onto the private garden, overlooked by the fully-fitted kitchen. On the first floor is a family bathroom and double bedroom while the master bedroom, including en-suite, covers the entire top floor and benefits from a stunning feature roof light and window. “I love my house! It’s hard to say what the best bit is,” comments Julie. “I really like how it’s so light and airy with all the big windows. The Velux window on the top floor (my bedroom) is amazing. I like the layout of the property, especially the flexible design which means you could choose to use the second bedroom as a separate lounge if you preferred.” Julie took advantage of the government’s Help to Buy equity loan scheme to purchase her home: “Using Help to Buy was great because I wouldn’t have had the deposit to purchase without using the scheme. The onsite financial advisor, Sue, was able to help and the whole process was really quick.” The Gables, located in the new civic and cultural quarter of Doncaster and only a short walk from the town’s shops, bars, restaurants and commuter links, features 54 ecologically designed one and two-bedroom homes, 11 of

which are the ‘Ashton’ model. Onebed homes start from £94,950 and two two-bed homes from £127,950 and there are a range of properties ready to move into now.* With 36 homes sold at the scheme, Muse is urging buyers to act fast to be in with a chance of snapping up a home at this soughtafter location. Interested buyers can contact the sales team to book a tour of the show homes and find out more about the government-backed Help to Buy equity loan scheme, which allows both first-time buyers and those looking to move up the property ladder the opportunity to purchase a brand new home with as little as five per cent deposit. Travel

Queue For the Top… he largest golf resort operator in United Kingdom, QHotels recently celebrated the first anniversary of its acquisition of six former De Vere hotels and De Vere luxury lodges. And a visit to one such property, Mottram Hall in Cheshire, illustrates just why the company is such a success. The hotel creates an imposing impression from the moment you arrive at the 18th Century Hall via a long, sweeping tree-clad drive through to its high quality bedrooms, fine restaurants, golf course and spa. The quality of the course is one example of the many benefits of a unique golf membership scheme operated by QHotels – the QFairway club. The initiative is entirely flexible with up to 50 rounds of golf for a cost of only £375 per annum, with access to 11 impressive resorts operated by QHotels. The points-based membership gives golfers all the benefits of a full club membership – including the facility to hold a handicap and playing rights for club competitions – while offering discounts on food and drink, shop purchases, tuition and hotel bed-and-breakfast rates. More than 1000 new members have already signed up to the scheme, launched earlier this year, including hundreds of juniors. Membership of the QFairway club is so popular because it provides access to some of Britain’s top courses including Forest Pines in Lincolnshire (a favourite among Yorkshire golfers), Slaley Hall in Northumberland and Oulton Hall, here on our doorstep in Leeds. Mottram Hall is one such top, championship standard course, having hosted the 2013

T

European Seniors PGA Championship. The front nine is relatively flat and meanders through lush meadows and parkland but golfers should not be fooled: the back nine is harder with some daunting drives and carries as fairways bisect the densely wooded rough. The Mottram Hall golfing experience has recently been enhanced by a spectacular £1.5million refurbishment programme. The result is a modern but classical new clubhouse, encompassing a fine bar area and restaurant both offering panoramic views of the course. The new Halfway House could be a clubhouse in itself with a fully stocked bar, seating area and the provision of hot and cold snacks. Playing at a QHotels venue is particularly attractive for groups or golf societies in 2016, with prices being held at 2015 rates provided the booking is for 12 or more and made before the end of November this year. Prices, for new bookings only, at any of the 11 courses start at £79 per person for one

night’s dinner, bed-and-breakfast plus two rounds of golf. Two-night, three-round packages including dinner, bed-and-breakfast can be booked from £165 per person while discounts of up to 20% are available on drinks or groups of any size. Mottram Hall has many attractions other than the fine golf: it’s home to Britain’s first Alfresco Thermospace Spa; it houses a superb health club with great leisure facilities, while it is also a glorious wedding venue and the perfect setting to host a conference or event. The rooms have been impressively upgraded and the Carrington Grill serves wonderful food using Cheshire ingredients from local suppliers. The hotel offers a number of special breaks including residential Christmas and New Year ones. Details of these and the range of golf packages can be found at www.qhotels.co.uk or by calling 0845 2411320.

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). Dinner proves to be a real lifesaver An annual dinner held to celebrate the start of Doncaster’s St Leger Festival raised enough money this year to triple the number of lifesaving defibrillators in Bawtry. The charity dinner, at The Crown Hotel, raised £5,415. Organisers decided to use the funds to buy two new defibrillators to ensure everyone in the town has easy access to the lifesaving equipment. One is already held at the Crown Hotel and the new ones will be at Mayflower Primary School and China Rose.. Pictured above with the new defibrillators are North Notts community first responder Patricia Knighton, representing Mayflower Primary School; Craig Dowie, of the Crown Hotel, Bawtry; Carly Hui, of China Rose, Bawtry; Emma Gosling, of the Bawtry & Doncaster branch of the BHF and Paula Wigglesworth, of the Crown Hotel Bawtry.
