nyone taking the temperature of the business community across the Sheffield City Region as a whole might be forgiven for thinking that the patient is prone to weakness and requires careful nurturing back to health.
However, while the latest Quarterly Economic Review published by the region’s four Chambers of Commerce may not have made good reading, with order books only marginally improving for manufacturers and in decline for the service sector, one sector is bucking the trend. In the field of healthcare and medical technology Sheffield is soaring - the city’s industrial heritage has given rise to a particular strength in medical technologies and their use of specialist metals, precision engineering and advanced manufacturing. Throw in an ageing UK population combined with greater focus on preventative medicine and you have the recipe for an industry that is in a very healthy state indeed. This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple gives a thorough check-up to the major players in this boom sector - companies such as B.Braun, JRI Orthopaedics, Orchid Orthopaedics and Swann Morton, alongside the revolutionary research being undertaken by the Advanced Well Being Research Centre at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the University of Sheffield’s Medical Advanced Manufacturing

productive don’t work for everyone, but we have some tips which can be adapted to suit your working style to help you remain productive while in the office.
At a time when we are seeing a sharp decline in manufacturing, the healthcare industry is more important than ever - it’s not just good news for the wellbeing of the country, it’s very good for business.
Meanwhile, hard though it may seem to believe after the longest summer heatwave since 1976, Christmas is just around the corner. OK, so it’s a few months away yet, but if you’re the person in your workplace responsible for organising the festive works get-together, now’s the time to start thinking of venues and how many people are attending.
One nationalised ‘industry’ close to our hearts is the National Health Service which celebrated its 70th anniversary this year. Among the celebrations of this milestone event, serious questions were being asked about whether the NHS can be sustained in the face of increasingly expensive treatments and medical complexity as we all live longer. No-one has all the answers but one local GP, who joined the NHS when she qualified from medical school in 1981, knows more than most about the changing role of the general practitioner and how the role of the NHS might change over the years. Stannington Medical Centre’s Dr Jenny Stephenson takes a long, hard look at the NHS at 70. While all businesses are fighting to maximise their profits, feature writer Hannah Sanders has been looking at 15 ways we can be more productive at work. If you find yourself bogged down by detail or side-tracked by non-essentials, her checklist may just get you and your colleagues back on track. One size first all lists on how to be
There’s a huge range of hotels and restaurants ready to cater for all your needs. Sharper social secretaries know that if you don’t book now your choice will be severely reduced. We have a selection of some of the best alternatives in the region for a Christmas party to remember. Add some motoring and travel tips and the latest business news from across the region and that’s just a taste of what’s in this month’s issue. I hope you enjoy this edition of First For Business. The latest Quarterly Economic Review published by the region’s four Chambers of Commerce highlights competition, inflation, business rates and exchange rates as the key challenges for the area’s manufacturing and service sector firms. The study found that in the last three

declined in comparison to previous quarter.
Fewer have reported working at full capacity and companies in both sectors are looking to invest less in training, it showed.
The research also highlighted a decline in business confidence over profit forecasts for the next 12 months. For service sector firms, confidence in this area was at its lowest level in at least three years.
For manufacturers, order books are only marginally improving, according to the Quarterly Economic Review. In the case of service sector firms, orders have
But the situation is not completely downbeat, according to Dr David Littlewood of Sheffield University’s Management School.

He explained: “Most balances remain positive, albeit often less strongly positive compared to previous quarters. There is also some indication that price increases and inflation may be slowing, whilst on balance firms in both sectors report quite robust cash flows.
Avanteon replacement at the Olympic Legacy Park, the hip joints, manufactured region is also fortunate to have by JRI Orthopaedics Ltd the intellectual infrastructure to kick-start innovations to research and prototype ideas that come from both medical practitioners and their patients.
“Interestingly when businesses were questioned, in early June, about key business challenges, Brexit and political uncertainty did not feature highly; the Q3 survey will show if this continues to be the case.”
Meanwhile the University of Sheffield’s Medical Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Medical AMRC) aims to revolutionise the healthcare technology industry using innovative design and manufacturing techniques.
Richard Wright, executive director at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, commented: “These are challenging times for business but we at the Chambers are still seeing lots of member businesses thriving. “The Chambers and Sheffield City Region Business Growth Hub are working alongside manufacturing and service firms, large and small, to offer business support and signpost them to a large number of opportunity areas including funding.” Despite the gloom, one sector showing encouraging growth is healthcare and medical technology, an area in which the Sheffield City Region excels. With the NHS at 70 this year, it is good to see this sector is reporting rude Vaios shoulder health. replacement An ageing UK population combined with a greater focus on preventative medicine, means the healthcare and medical technology sectors are emerging as strong growth areas in the Sheffield City Region. Sheffield industrial heritage gives rise to a particular strength in medical technologies and their use of specialist metals, precision engineering, and advanced manufacturing. Sheffield is one of the UK’s largest clusters of orthopaedic and medical devices companies, such as B.Braun, JRI Orthopaedics, Orchid Orthopaedics and Swann Morton are supported by universities that offer access to world leading research for healthcare technologies. The organisation combines cuttingedge manufacturing technologies with world-class research and development and access clinical expertise through the university’s academic and clinical resources, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The Medical AMRC works with health services, doctors, researchers, medical manufacturers and suppliers to design innovative product and process solutions that push the limits of current technologies, create new possibilities and help the medical and social care sectors address global health issues. Sheffield Hallam University is part of a new partnership which aims to make Yorkshire’s medical inventions more attractive to inventors. The Grow MedTech partnership, backed by almost £10million of funding, will
build on the distinctive cluster of medical technologies expertise in the Sheffield and Leeds city regions. It will address issues that can block the process of commercialising products and bringing them from conception to clinical use. By supporting and financially backing researchers and developers to take new products through the early stages of commercial development, the partnership expects to bring around 20 potentially life-enhancing devices into everyday use during the next three years. It is not just innovation that is driving the sector as Granton Medical demonstrates as it celebrates a huge milestone. As one of Yorkshire’s oldest family-run businesses, which started life in Sheffield over 400 years ago, it is Ace cup and liner celebrating two combinations decades of producing sterile pouches that prevent the spread of infection in dental surgeries, hospitals, veterinary practices and tattoo clinics. Granton Medical has been at the heart of cutting edge medical technology since it begin in 1601 and has survived two world wars, the bubonic plague, the Sheffield Blitz and 12 recessions. The firm, based on Parkway Industrial Estate, is now run by the Kirkby family, who are direct descendants of company founders the Raggs. >>> First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 7

Over the years the Raggs manufactured cutlery, scissors, swords, and cutthroat razors, and the first safety razor produced in the UK in 1840. In 1929 it started making surgical blades before turning to sterile medical packaging, and is now celebrating 20 years as the UK’s largest volume manufacturer of self-seal sterilisation pouches. Director Katie Kirkby, said: “We never underestimate how important our product is to the healthcare industry – we are at the start of a crucial chain and by ensuring that our self-seal pouches work effectively we are reducing the likelihood of cross infection and spread of diseases. It’s incredible to think how long Granton Medical and its forebears have survived. “Especially when you look back over the last four centuries and what we have withstood. Wars, revolutions, and in more recent times a sharp decline in the manufacturing industry.”
THE ADVANCED WELL BEING RESEARCH CENTRE A new building is going up on the site of the former Don Valley Stadium, now Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, which aims to provide unparalleled healthcare solutions that will put it on the international map. Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Well Being Research Centre (AWRC), in collaboration with Toshiba, Westfield Health, Parkrun, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and others, aims to attract investment to make it the most advanced research centre in the world for developing innovations that will improve population health and physical activity levels. Supported by the Department of Health and Social Care, which has committed £14million of funding to the project, it opens next year. It will feature indoor and outdoor facilities for 70 researchers to carry out world-leading research on health and physical activity in collaboration with the private

It will also feature a 7.5m high indoor laboratory with cameras and tracking instruments, a biomechanics laboratory, diagnostic equipment such as MRI, CT, DXA and ultrasound, body composition measurement and physiological testing, a technology demonstrator hub and integrated NHS clinics. The AWRC will form a key part of Sheffield City Region’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District
The primary aim of the AWRC is to create innovations that will improve health, tackling key issues such as static levels of physical activity, rising obesity and mental health whilst also attracting new jobs and investment to the region. Professor Steve Haake, director of Sheffield Hallam’s AWRC, said: “Working in collaboration with the private sector at the heart of the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, our talented engineers and researchers will design new products and services from initial concept all the way through to market.”

INNOVATION AND PASSION EMERALD PROPERTY GROUP ARE DEDICATED TO THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE STANDARDS – NO MATTER WHAT YOUR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS.
W
hether you are a private landlord with an eye on building up a property portfolio, a homeowner looking to upgrade with a new kitchen or bathroom, or you are tackling big project building work, Emerald Property Group Ltd is ready to help. They will complete any building task, big or small, to the highest possible standard, which is proven by their accreditation with the Federation of Master Builders. This relatively new business, first established in March 2018 in Doncaster and recently relocated to Nether Edge in Sheffield, is a leading construction and property company with over 60 years of combined experience in the building trade. Joint managing directors Thomas Joseph and Gary Plant are both committed to delivering construction with passion, innovative solutions and a team that performs at a high standard on a daily basis. Thomas says: “These are the values which Emerald Property Group Ltd stand

by as we live by the principles of passion, innovation and performance.” Thomas chose the company name carefully. Emerald is one of the most prestigious and luxurious gemstones, so what better symbol to represent a company that prides itself on finishing every project to the highest possible standard? With a full team of builders, electricians, plumbers and contractors on stand-by, Emerald Property Group Ltd offers a full range of services such as conversions, extensions, refurbishments and renovations, brickwork, groundwork,
plastering and much more. If you’re wary of unprofessional work by cowboy builders, you can take comfort from the fact that Thomas and Gary are determined to build on their reputation for first rate work and a professional approach to whatever the task at hand may be. In fact, their two most recent projects, converting a former pub in Worksop into en suite apartments and redeveloping a student property just round the corner in time for the new academic year, were taken on after cowboys left both buildings in disarray. Perhaps it is because of Thomas’s ex-military background that Emerald Property Group is such a stickler for doing things to a high standard and, always, by the book. This is particularly important when it comes to any work being done on behalf of HMO (homes with multiple occupancy) landlords. HMOs can be an excellent way of adding value to your property

AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY When not in the office or on site, Thomas and Gary are determined to put something back into the community, and with this in mind they have forged very close links with Sheffield United FC’s Community Foundation. On a practical level this means they are proud sponsors of the Blades’ under-18 ladies and under-nine girls teams for the next two seasons But it’s about much more than just having the sponsor’s name on a football shirt. Thomas and Gary have been inspired by the work done by the foundation at the heart of the community to narrow the gap of disadvantage in health, education, disability and inclusion, and they are urging other businesses to get involved. “It’s been such a rewarding experience for us to see the work done by the Foundation, off the pitch as well as on it,” says Thomas.
portfolio but with new legislation coming in from October 2018, covering everything from the number of storeys to a new minimum room size, it’s essential that landlords choose a builder who knows exactly what they are doing and will keep them on the right side of the law.
That message is echoed by Chris Bailey who is head of the foundation, which works across five key areas. • Health and wellbeing • Community and inclusion • Education and training • Sports participation • NCS (National Citizens Service)
Trust Emerald Property Group Ltd to help ensure your HMO properties are up to scratch and ready for new residents as soon as possible. But they also offer much more than this; their professional team is standing by to take on any work involving student lets, regular tenant/homeowner properties, extensions, renovations etc.
The work ranges widely, from talking to teenagers about knife crime, bringing them face to face with victims or their relatives and spelling out the devastating impact it can have on the inner city areas, to giving cancer patients the chance to kick a ball around and enjoy other forms of low level exercise.
As well as their outstanding team Emerald have trusted sub-contractors who are accredited with NICEIC and the Gas Safe Register - they provide excellent plumbing and electrical expertise. In addition to providing exceptional consultancy services, they offer a full project management service which provides their clients with a full comprehensive CAD drawings package suitable for any planning application. Emerald Property Group Ltd. are members of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, taking great pride in their work to ensure their clients receive the best quality services.
“We’re entirely self-funded so the involvement of companies like Emerald is vital – it’s really important that more local businesses get involved and help in any way they can,” says Chris.

WILL POWER! LEAVE A LEGACY IN YOUR WILL AND HELP WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY CREATE A BETTER LIFE FOR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES LIVING WITH, AND BEYOND, CANCER.
A
third of the vital projects Weston Park Cancer Charity funds are made possible by people kindly choosing to leave a gift in their will. This means that as many as one in three projects would not go ahead without people choosing to remember Weston Park in this special way. A legacy is a wonderful way to support a cause you care about, and since 1994, Weston Park Cancer Charity has received over six million pounds from people kindly leaving a legacy gift - large or small. These funds have not only helped to improve the lives of thousands of local cancer patients, but have also helped to fund pioneering research, fundamental support services and advanced medical equipment. It is people like YOU who make a difference, which is why Weston Park Cancer Charity needs your support. WHY WRITE A WILL?
According to research, less than one third of adults have made wills, and one in six wills are out of date. If you do not make a will, the law decides what happens to your estate, and this may not be what you expect or intend. You may also fail to take advantage of possible tax planning opportunities, and your estate could incur more tax as a result. By leaving a will, you will have peace of mind that your wishes will be followed once you have passed away.
DISCOUNTED WILL WRITING SERVICE When making a new will or updating an existing will, we would always advise that you seek professional assistance from a solicitor. Irwin Mitchell Solicitors offer a discounted will writing service on behalf of Weston Park Cancer Charity, and will also make a donation to the charity for each will they write. They have an experienced will writing team who can help with either preparing a first will or updating an earlier will. If you would like further information on this service, call Irwin Mitchell on: 0370 240 0633 – quoting “WPCC” - and they will be able to discuss your needs further. To make it as easy and smooth as possible for your wishes to be carried out, if you would like to leave a gift to support the work of Weston Park Cancer Charity, you must include the charity’s full name and registered charity number in your will. Weston Park Cancer Charity - Reg No. 509803.
WHY ARE GIFTS TO CHARITY IMPORTANT?
Over one third of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s income comes from people kindly leaving a legacy gift, of any size, within a will. Without people remembering Weston Park Cancer Charity in this way, many vital projects would not go ahead. ARE THERE BENEFITS TO LEAVING A GIFT TO CHARITY?
All gifts in wills to charities are tax-efficient, which means that any gift you leave to Weston Park Cancer Charity will be deducted from your estate before any tax liability is calculated. Weston Park Cancer Charity Whitham Road, Sheffield, S10 2SJ Tel: 0114 226 5370 www.westonpark.org.uk

STAY FOCUSED HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT 15 WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN BE MORE PRODUCTIVE AT WORK.
14 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
FEATURE
o you sometimes find your work day getting out of control, where all your plans seem to get bigger rather than smaller? Well, you aren’t alone as many people struggle to remain productive as the week goes on.
D
Any effective and successful business understands the importance of productivity in the workplace. Being productive has lots of benefits for the company, staff and its clients, however it’s inevitable that certain factors will dampen productivity and motivation levels. If you and you staff know how to reduce these factors and take successful measures to ensure everyone remains focused, you can increase productivity. One size fits all lists on how to be productive don’t work for everyone, so here are some top tips, which can be adapted to suit your working style to help you remain productive while in the office.
1. TAKE REGULAR BREAKS Taking short breaks during long tasks helps you maintain a level of constant performance. Working at a task without breaks leads to a steady decline in performance, so even if it’s ten minutes to make a cuppa, it’s well worth it.
2. SAY NO TO MEETINGS Meetings can take up a lot of your time throughout the day. So, before booking your next meeting, ask yourself whether you can accomplish the same goals over email, phone or through a web-based meeting using Skype.
3. OR, HOLD STANDING MEETINGS If a face-to-face meeting is essential, then a standing meeting could be the best option for you. By standing, people will be reminded to keep the meeting short and sweet plus standing also helps increase levels of attention and involvement.
4. IMPROVE EMAIL ETIQUETTE Emailing can be a productivity killer, and a distraction from other tasks. Sometimes, although copying-in multiple people to an email could get the workload off your plate, it can also cause distractions. If the email chain goes beyond two replies, it could just be easier to pick up the phone to get things resolved.
5. TACKLE THE TOUGHEST TASKS WHILE YOU’RE MOST ALERT While your attention is at its peak (and you’ve had your morning dose of caffeine) it’s worth getting your most complicated tasks out of the way, that way they aren’t looming over you for the rest of the day.
6. SLEEP Early morning commutes, long work hours and responsibilities at home means that an increasing number of people aren’t getting the right amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can have a damaging effect on your performance, as it will decrease your concentration, working memory, mathematical capacity and logical reasoning. If you can aim for seven to nine hours sleep per night, and if you struggle falling asleep, try a camomile tea and putting your phone away an hour before bed.
7. STOP MULTI-TASKING People often think that the ability to multitask is an important skill for increasing efficiency but actually attempting several tasks at once can result in a loss of productivity. Instead commit to one task and complete it before moving on.
8. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR MORNING COMMUTE If you use public transport to get to work, instead of spending the time scrolling through your social media account, use that extra hour to clear your inbox, create a daily to-do list or do some general idea planning for the week ahead.
9. DECORATE YOUR DESK
It’s important to give yourself something nice to look at throughout the working day. Decorate your space with photographs, plants and little trinkets.
10. TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS During work hours, turn off your notifications and build in allocated time to check your emails and messages instead.
11. DELEGATE
By delegating properly you will have more time to spend on your own work. The key is to assign the right task to the right person, so it’s important to know the skills of each individual team member.
12. PREPARE A TO-DO LIST
To-do lists are invaluable when it comes to optimising productivity. Before starting your working day, spend ten minutes putting together a realistic list and then work your way through.
13. BREAK UP WORK WITH EXERCISE
It goes without saying that exercise is beneficial to your health and mental well-being. If you don’t have the time to head to the gym on your lunch hour, then go for a quick brisk walk to clear your head and get some fresh air. And, if you aren’t able to get out of the office, then do a few impromptu desk workouts throughout the day.
14. FIND YOUR PERFECT NOISE LEVEL
Some people can only work in absolute silence while others need some background noise to help them concentrate. Experiment with different noise levels until you find what helps you be the most productive.
15. DEVELOP A ROUTINE
Above all, developing a routine will actually help you pinpoint effective methods and techniques to help you increase your day-to-day productivity. First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 15

This December, across the Sheffield City Region work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or two - together. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue can give dedicated, hard-working staff something fun to look forward to as the year draws to a close. It is not only good for team morale but a great bonding
experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie. It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party.
So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here.

ASHOKA GETS IT REYT… RICHARD ABBEY ENJOYS CURREH WITH THE FULL FLAVOUR OF SHEFFIELD.
Y
ou have to take your hat off to Ecclesall Road’s Ashoka. When it comes to self-promotion, they’re some of the best around. Want a Reyt Good CurrehTM? Thanks to their quirky, clever, and often funny, advertising campaigns, it’s the first place that springs to mind. Having been open for just over 50 years – they’re proudly one of the city’s oldest curry houses – this is a restaurant that moves with the times and has made great strides under the ownership of Rahul Amin. Whether it’s in books, magazines or on social media, Ashoka embraces its Sheffieldness to the full – even trademarking the names of some of its dishes. But, above all, serve up some of the best Indian food in the city. There’s definitely substance behind all that style. The interior is cosy and contemporary – think Rajasthani railway meets cool café – but doesn’t feel at all cramped. If we were expecting a quiet Monday night, we were quickly proved wrong as the restaurant was packed. It seems, even despite the 22 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
heatwave, the good folk of Sheffield can’t get enough curreh™. As we nibbled on some poppadoms, with glasses of Cobra (£6) and Abbeydale Heathen (£4.50) in hand, we took our cues from Rahul who recommended we try some smaller portions of a handful of dishes – who were we to argue? It was a great opportunity to try something different and sample dishes that perhaps we wouldn’t have normally chosen. Starters of black pepper prawn puri (£6) – light and delicate; and mustard pepper lamb chops (£6.50) – tender and punchy; kicked off proceedings before a veritable feast of main courses. Rahul described the Wedding Day Chicken Curry™ (£12.50) as the ‘staff curry’; it’s what they tend to eat at the end of a shift and you can see why. Cooked on the bone, the chicken was deliciously tender, coated in a flavoursome, moreish sauce mopped up with chunks of garlic naan bread (£3). Delicious.
Elsewhere, a lamb Karamelised Kashmiri™ (£12.50) had a jammy fruitiness that contrasted well to the spice kick from a classic chicken Kalcutta Karai™ (£11.50), whilst ginger brinjal (£10) – baby vine aubergines with fresh ginger – had real depth and garlic palak (£4.50) – fresh spinach leaves with chunky garlic – added further texture and flavour. The best thing, for me, was that you could taste the difference between all of them. The subtleness of the use of different spices was superb. Service throughout the evening was excellent and little things like the expanding hot towels and complimentary Parle-G biscuits all added to the relaxed, enjoyable, and ultimately tasty, experience. Verdict: Reyt good. Ashoka 307 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8NX Tel: 0114 268 3029 www.ashoka1967.com Instagram/Facebook/Twitter: @ashoka1967

THERE ARE SOME VERY SPECIAL ANNIVERSARIES TO BE CELEBRATED IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
A VERY SPECIAL CAR Bentley is celebrating its 100th year in 2019, so how do you celebrate such an occasion? By making a very special edition of your most prestigious vehicle, that’s how. Called the Mulsanne W.O Edition by Mulliner, it’s a homage to founder W.O Bentley’s famous final 1930s design – the ‘8-litre’. What’s special about this is that each of the 100 cars built will hold a slice of crankshaft from W.O Bentley’s personal car. This particular Mulsanne is very special because of the range of features it beholds: Onyx paintwork; Mulliner illuminated cocktail cabinet; an interior colour split made from luxurious Fireglow Heritage and Fireglow hide with Beluga hide detailing and blind stitching.
DOUBLE DECADE The Audi TT is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The TT first made its debut to the world with its ground-breaking design back in 1998, being released onto the road three years later. To celebrate this double decade anniversary, the TT coupe and roadster have undergone enhancements to exterior design, power upgrades and an equipment uplift. The S-Line and Black edition models are further differentiated from their predecessors. The Audi virtual cockpit now has an additional sport display providing information on engine output, torque and G-forces. The 1.8-litre TFSI engine is being replaced by a 194hp 2.0-litre engine and the 227hp 2.0litre engine has been boosted up to 242hp. Orders in the autumn. First deliveries late 2018.
UP FOR THE CUP
STARK CONTRAST
Performance car enthusiasts will know of the Megane R.S; its driving dynamics are the best in the hot hatch business, and the Trophy raises the bar even further.
Say hello to the first ever Marvel-themed car, the Hyundai Kona Iron Man Edition.
Based on the Cup chassis, the Megane RS Trophy boasts a new 1.8-litre turbo engine producing 300hp and 310lb ft of torque. As with all Megane R.S models, power is delivered through the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Like the ordinary Megane R.S, the Trophy comes with a rear-wheel steering system which aids the agility of the car to make it much more nimble. Orders open this autumn with deliveries starting in the winter.

On the outside, it has a unique front-lighting signature, including a custom daytime running light form that closely resembles the facemask and eye shape of the Iron Man suit. Other Stark-like flourishes include an Iron Man mask motif on the roof, a unique Vshaped hood garnish, front bonnet Iron Man mask badging and custom 18-inch alloy wheels with Iron Man mask centre caps. The exterior colour is an exclusive Iron Man red with matte grey. Inside, Tony Stark’s signature adorns the instrument panel alongside a unique Iron Man shift lever knob, a special head-up display and centre stack featuring Iron Man graphics, and custom seats.
Our services include eye tests, contact lenses, dry eye clinics, glasses and sunglasses. Outside prescriptions also welcome.

ou’d think after the pomp and ceremony of the recent royal wedding that Harry and Meghan would want to lay low for a while. You know, maybe kick back and relax in their cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. So you could say it was a huge surprise when I ‘bumped’ into them on a recent trip to London. Of course, when I say bumped, I don’t mean brushing shoulders with them on Kensington High Street, more that they’re the centre of attention as you’d expect. Cameras are flashing left, right and centre as people clamour to get their picture taken with the happy couple. And they don’t complain once. Only they’re not on Kensington High Street, or Buckingham Palace for that matter, but the new main attraction at Madame Tussaud’s, the famous waxwork museum that has been

My son –he’s five – on the other hand, was less than impressed, preferring the Marvel figures and 4D cinema experience. My wife was happy to have her picture taken with a Wookiee in the Star Wars section while I gave Bobby Moore a hand lifting the Jules Rimet trophy. With other areas covering film, music, culture and sport, as well as a Spirit of London ride in a London taxi, it was a fun way to spend 2-3 hours. capital for the first time, they quickly put us at ease, taking it all in their stride and appreciating London for what it is – a truly wonderful city. After living there briefly almost 20 years ago, I’ve dipped in and out on a regular basis, usually for work, and it’s easy to forget what a fantastic place it really is. Suitable for kids? Most definitely. The base for our stay was the charming Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, which was tucked away in the chic little enclave of Belgravia. It was a great spot – close to Knightsbridge tube station and the upmarket shopping of Harrods and Harvey Nichols as well as being a short walk to Hyde Park. The hotel is the smallest in the Jumeirah portfolio with just 88 rooms. What I really liked about it was that you get the quality service of a big hotel chain yet it retained a boutique feel. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our junior suite accommodated the four of us comfortably and had all the little comforts that make a big difference – bath robes and slippers for all of us,Temple Spa products in the bathrooms, Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary wifi. The icing on the cake? Complimentary teddy bears for the kids. Like I said, it’s the little things. Guests can also use the Peak Health Club & Spa at sister property

You can dine in the Lowndes Bar & Kitchen or outside on The Terrace, the latter of which opens seasonally. Breakfast was hearty to say the least; as the well as the continental options, including cereals, pastries, cold meats, cheeses and smoothies, there was a good selection of cooked options, from the full English to eggs Benedict and smoked kippers. It was the perfect start to the day and just what you needed for a day of exploring ahead. Next on our list of things to do, and a

My son is a huge dinosaur fan and was blown away by the display at the former while my daughter loved learning about the human body in the latter. Given that there’s so much to see and do – a day wasn’t enough for us – it’s amazing that both of these attractions are free to visit. For our sightseeing day, we made good use of the Tube and buses – kids under 11 travel for free with a paying adult – which saw us take in the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square. A torrential downpour and thunderstorm curtailed our plans somewhat so we ducked into the shops of Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Oxford Street before heading back to the hotel for some much needed rest and recuperation. The Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel was the perfect respite. Overall we had an amazing four days; My children are already planning what we’ll do on our next visit.

GLITTERING GOLF ON THE SILVER COAST PORTUGAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVOURITE DESTINATION FOR GOLFERS … BUT THERE’S STILL LOTS OF GREAT COURSES TO DISCOVER.
P
ortugal continues to attract UK golfers in their droves particularly to the Algarve, yet a relatively new course on the block has revitalised interest in the Silver Coast, situated about one hour’s drive North of Lisbon. Made popular for golfers 20 years ago when the Praia D’El Rey course and its upscale properties opened to wide acclaim, the area’s appeal received a major shot in the arm 12 months ago with the launch of the resort’s new course, West Cliffs Golf Links. The first Portuguese venture by US designer Cynthia Dye has rapidly cemented its place among Portugal’s finest, indeed it is tipped to become known as one of the best in the whole of the continental Europe. It was named ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2017 World Golf Awards. Word is getting around, and figures reveal that the Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort as it is known, is
Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort www.praia-del-rey.com Cabell Robinson’s exceptional late-1990s layout at Praia D’El Rey has attracted visiting golfers since its inception and is famed for its challenge and variety. It opens in parkland style, but soon some great holes hugging the wild Atlantic coastline among sweeping sand dunes take you into links-style territory. It returns to a more heathland appearance, winding its way back to the clubhouse. It is no push over and indeed can be tough to play when the breeze blows off the beach. Better players will love it; the greens are true and it is an enjoyable test. It is ranked 48th in the new top 100 Continental Europe list by influential course ranking website www.top100courses.com

Portugal’s most popular golf destination outside of the Algarve. Business is booming with more than 33,000 rounds of golf played in the first five months this year on the two courses. Praia D’El Rey has seen a 2018 increase of more than seven per cent on green fees booked on the corresponding period last year – with bookings up by nearly 20 per cent in May alone. And the numbers are just as impressive at West Cliffs, with more than 14,000 rounds having been played this year. Its addition makes the Silver Coast an appealing location for golfers who like to play a few different tracks on their week away – just round the corner within easy reach are Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort and Bom Sucesso Golf. There are several ways to combine golf and ccommodation and there are good deals to be had.
WEST CLIFFS
West Cliffs Golf Links www.praia-del-rey.com West Cliffs has been created over 200 hectares of natural landscape and rolling sand dunes. Already been tipped to become the number one golf course in Portugal surpassing the Algarve’s Monte Rei. Being relatively new, it currently looks a little scruffy in parts, particularly over the first three holes, but as it matures and blends into its wild landscape it will become a masterpiece. Despite its youthful appearance, the fairways and greens are already in top shape, and the natural vegetation making up the rough is a pleasure on the eye, although a poor shot wide of the fairway will often lead to a lost ball. The stretch from holes four to eight is particularly appealing, though fairly difficult. Variety is evident throughout the course, including on the huge rolling greens that present a number of challenges. One word of warning. Whatever your standard, play off the forward tees or West Cliffs will destroy you.

FACTFILE: ROYAL OBIDOS Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort www.royalobidos.com Opened in 2012 it was the last course designed by Seve Ballesteros, and what a tribute to the great man it really is. It is described as a parkland/heathland hybrid which makes a nice contrast to the links-like courses of Praia de Rey and West Cliffs. It differs from those in offering water hazards all over but its similarities include perfect maintenance and slick, large and undulating greens. It features some great driving holes, notably the downhill par 5 2nd, and the well- placed water hazards will amuse – particularly the surrounding the island green on the par three 3rd, the extremely difficult 11th, and not least the spectacular finale on the 18th. It plays pretty long, so be warned, and it’s fairly hilly with leg-sapping distances from green to tee, so a buggy is advisable.
The Silver Coast This is largely an unspoiled part of Portugal’s fabulous Atlantic coastline with big beaches and crashing waves that make it a favourite of the surfing set who converge on the fishing port of Peniche, just 30 minutes drive from the Praia D’El Rey resort. Nearby is the old walled town of Obidos, unfortunately overrun by modern day tourism, but still worth a visit during a day off the course. Winemaking in the area is top notch and wines are inexpensive even in the wide range of restaurants that show traditional Portuguese cuisine at its best.
Getting there. Lisbon is well served by local airports and carriers include the Portuguese national airline TAP. Manchester Airport services, including parking and hotels, and be found at www.holidayextras.com The Silver Coast is easily reached by hire car from Lisbon airport via motorway. Stay. Plenty of on-course options and great value playand-stay packages at the Marriott at Praia D’El Rey, the Evolutee Hotel at Royal Obidos, or the Bom Sucesso apartments. Silver Coast. SOMETHING TO BE CELEBRATED STANNINGTON MEDICAL CENTRE’S DR JENNY STEPHENSON LOOKS AT OUR NHS AT 70.
T
hey sat in the flickering candlelight, head in hands, studying their patient whose breathing laboured, hovering between life and death. They applied poultices, offered draughts of whisky and raw egg; sometimes Mother Nature cured the patient, sometimes she did not. The tough ones survived despite whatever the doctor could do. The poor ones could not afford the doctor in any case, so had even less chance of pulling through. 38 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
I was fortunate to join the NHS in 1981, when I qualified from Sheffield Medical School, and I have witnessed first hand the plethora of changes taking place along my timeline, and continue to do so. Before the birth of the National Health Service, such was the life of the doctor who worked tirelessly, without break or respite, meeting face-to-face the raw illness which beset his patients but with little he could do about it.TB, cholera, smallpox, all took their toll in those early days.
Then there came the beams of light which shone through the despair. Edward Jenner (1796) made his observations of milkmaids who contracted cowpox, which protected against the related smallpox – hence his development of the vital smallpox vaccine. Joseph Lister developed the antiseptic carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds. This saved women after childbirth and patients having operations from the consequences of infections.
FEATURE
The first penicillin antibiotic, which started development in Sheffield with Howard Florey in the 1930s, saved many a young soldier in WW2 from death from the consequences of trench gangrene. These gems were set in a background of socio-political developments such as increasing employment and improved housing, itself vitally underpinned by safe sanitation. The Victorians gained an understanding that health flowed from a clean water supply to the population, made so by the dirty water being kept separate from it. Middens were replaced by flushing toilets, thanks to the tireless work of Thomas Crapper of London, and a proper sewerage system as developed by Joseph Bazalgette (1858). However, after two World Wars the deprivation and difficulty took their toll on the people, and they suffered many infections such as pneumonia and TB, scarlet fever and influenza. Increasing poverty meant increasing diseases, especially in the very young and the very old. Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health in the UK from 1945-51, had been involved in a medical ‘insurance’ system for employees of a small Welsh mining town, and along with William Beveridge’s welfare proposals of 1942, developed the idea of a national health service, free at the point of delivery. ‘Nye’ Bevan’s quote referring to the NHS is well known: “Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community.” On 5 July 1948, the birth of a National Health Service was announced with flourish and ceremony and received with great joy and relief by the people, in a time of post-war hardship. Bevan saw health as a basic human right and paid for through taxation. Walkley House Medical Centre, Greenhow Street, Walkley. Built in 1870.This picture was taken in winter, 1937
The concept of the ‘General Practitioner’ was born in the mid-1960s with a specific contract – a doctor who had previously worked alone or in small groups, now had the benefit of a team as they took on vital staff such as receptionists and nurses. GPs were paid for delivering specific services such as contraception, baby checks and diabetes care. The doctor’s role changed bit by bit over this time. ‘He’ was partially replaced by ‘she’ as more women were accepted for medical training (currently more than half of medical students are women in Sheffield for example), working less than full time in many cases. The GP would have modern guidance to follow, based on evidence provided by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) from 1999. After qualifying as a doctor I had three years’ of GP training to complete, part of it in Barnsley District Hospital. I remember being called out one night in 1984 with the obstetric ‘flying squad’ to deliver a premature baby as an emergency at home, and our ambulance was held up by miners’
“The doctor no longer is the father figure providing water-tight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice.” strikers. The ambulance was rocked about and stones thrown at the windows. Fortunately the baby survived. At the time I started out as a GP, 1 August 1985, at Walkley House Medical Centre, we had an excellent team of receptionists, nurses of different types, as well as five GPs. We have developed over this time, and won the Practice of the Year Award in November 2017 for teamwork. A few of those early staff still work with us, and the team has developed new skills as NHS changes demand. The doctor now looks upon the patient, the person in front of them, as a partner in the decision-making; that person often having consulted ‘Google’ first and possibly having his own fears and questions which need to be put in context. The doctor no longer is the father figure providing watertight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice, delivered on an individual basis for that specific

person’s problems. Can this NHS be sustained in the face of increasingly sophisticated and expensive treatments and medical complexity as we all live longer? Now, almost half of people aged over 65 take five or more different drugs. There is evidence to show that people with several medical conditions are best served by a GP or practice of GPs who know them well and their team offers their different skills to support that person to maintain independence. The NHS needs to be able to sustain this type of care. I think the future of the NHS holds an increasing use of technology, more sophisticated treatments and drugs, further increases in preventive care and more of the services being delivered near the patient rather than in hospitals. However, it must not lose the patient-centredness of the early days, and care of the person. Dr Jenny Stephenson is a GP at Stannington Medical Centre, Sheffield 6. INSPIRATIONAL CANCER SURVIVOR RECOGNISED FOR PHENOMENAL FUNDRAISING ACHIEVMENT A man who started fundraising as a thank you for the life-saving treatment he received at Weston Park Hospital, has been recognised by Weston Park Cancer Charity staff for his dedication to supporting cancer patients locally. John Price, aged 64, from Sandygate has worked tirelessly over the last 14 years to repay the cost for the life-changing clinical drugs trial he received at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield – one of only four purpose-built cancer centres in the UK. After John was faced with the devastating news that his cancer was terminal, he refused to accept it, and ultimately ended up participating in a clinical trial that has extended his life greatly; enabling him to see his sons through their education, qualify in their 46 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

John vowed to raise £100,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to repay the cost of his clinical drugs trial, but he has since surpassed that target, raising over £300,000. Samantha Dixon, CEO at Weston Park Cancer Charity commented: “John has selflessly given his time and energy to help support those in need. His positive attitude and determination never to be beaten are an inspiration to all and we are incredibly grateful to him for raising such a phenomenal amount so that people like him can continue to access ground-breaking trials at Weston Park Hospital. “Thanks to people like John, we have been able to improve access to clinical trials
giving people access to the best cancer care treatment, which for some, is the only hope of survival.Today, 20 per cent of patients at Weston Park are able to participate in a clinical trial – an increase of 16 per cent compared to 2000.” Commenting on being recognised by Weston Park Cancer Charity, John said: “I feel so humble. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Weston Park Hospital, and I wanted to do something to say thank you for the wonderful care I received. “Without my family and friends at Hallamshire Golf Club, this wouldn’t have been possible – thank you for your help. And thank you to Weston Park. I hope by sharing this, we can inspire others to fundraise on behalf of this very worthy cause.”

In the UK, there is currently no protection from dismissal for people with terminal illnesses and so the Dying to Work Charter is instrumental in ensuring workers get the support they require. Jim Haywood, director of Achill Management who host the LSA, said: “Huge congratulations to Wake Smith Solicitors for its achievement. We encourage all members of the LSA to measure and report their carbon footprint each year using the bespoke LSA Carbon Reporting Tool.”
