his month in First For Business we celebrate the vital role being played by entrepreneurship and business start-ups in Sheffield City Region. The return of MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival to Sheffield City Hall brings a packed programme of inspirational speakers, including the man who might appear at first glance to be an unlikely cover star for a business publication. Nevertheless JB Gill’s conversion from singing with boy band JLS to owning and managing his own farm, as well as fronting a children’s BBC show, is likely to provide one of the most inspirational, as well as entertaining, elements of the event when he takes to the podium. JB is one of many keynote speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including leading cookery author and entrepreneur Annabel Karmel MBE, head of digital at Innocent Drinks Joe McEwan and telesales technique master Anthony Stears, who seem to have the happy knack of either creating fabulously successful businesses out of nothing, or inspiring others to strike out and be their own boss. Another major player on the bill is Kevin Byrne, founder and CEO of checkatrade.com. The inspiration for his business came when a tornado swept
through his home town of Selsey, causing £10million worth of damage. When rogue traders attempted to cash in on the misfortunes of local people, Kevin saw the need to create a nationwide collective of reliable traders. MADE celebrates the very best in British business and has become a major event in the entrepreneurial business calendar, attracting leaders from business, government and media. First For Business is proud to be a media partner of MADE 2015 and you can read all about the festival in this issue. To misinformed outsiders, Sheffield may appear to be an unlikely setting to celebrate the vital role played by independent-minded businessmen and women. The old cliché about the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire, coined by a Conservative councillor back in the 1980s, can still lead to the idea that Sheffield just does not care about business and entrepreurship. Statistics tell a different tale, however, with latest figures from StartUp Britain naming Sheffield as seventh in a table of the best UK towns and cities to start a business. We look at some of the reasons why Sheffield is a great place to be your own boss. Also in this issue we talk to Professor

STING IN THE T TA AIL Be wary about taking pension benefits if you are still paaying y into your retirement fund.
T
hree months on from the introduction of the new pensions regime it appears that manny people have already taken advantage of their newfound freedoms. Research conducted in the run-up to the changes suggested that 31% of those over the age of 55 were planning to access their pension as soon as the new rules allowed.1 Chancellor George Osborne recentl ntlly repor ted that 60,000 people had withdraawn w over £1 billion from their retirement funds since the rules changed. However, there is a possible sting in the tail for those who are taking pension benefits while still contributing to another pension scheme. For the unwary this could uld haave a big impact on their future retirement plans.

But if you do something that triggers a reduction in your annual allowance, it drops from £40,000 to £10,000. A number of different events can create this problem, including when you take your pension as a lump sum.
One way is to buy a traditional annuity. Yoou can take 25% of your pot as tax-free cash and use the rest to buy the annuity. Yoou can then con continue to make tax-efficient contributions up to the maximum annual allowance of £40,000 in future years, assuming you continue to maintain the earnings requirement. But if you buy a new-style short-term annuityy, this will trigger the £10,000 annual allowance – so ensure you seek advice first.

This option offers access to your money and your annual allowance isn’t affected until you’re ready to take the remaining 75% as income. This option has the added advantage of enabling your residual fund to continue to grow. A final option is to use the new small pots rule. This allows you to cash in a maximum of three money purchase pensions with an individual value of up to £10,000, although there is no limit on the number of some types of occupational pensions. The first 25% is tax-free and the remaining 75% is taxed at your marginal tax rate. This rule gives you full flexibility to cash in some of your pension, perhaps to meet a shor tterm need, without affecting your future ability to maximise the £40,000 annual allowance. KILLER TELESALES TECHNIQUES WITH THE “TELEPHONE ASSASSIN” One of our masterclass presenters at MADE this year is Anthony Stears, the self-styled “Telephone Assassin”. From his very first business venture (making a tidy profit selling his dad’s prize possessions through an impromptu “garage sale”), Anthony has always showed a talent for direct selling. Following an awardwinning stint as an estate agent, Anthony developed his skills by selling targeted data profiling services to blue-chip clients, a
role which taught him about the psychology of communication and the power of our voice and bodylanguage on others. With a growing waiting list of clients Anthony decided to begin running specialist training workshops designed to help people responsible for generating leads but who wouldn’t consider themselves a sales professional (ie the vast majority of people in small businesses).
Sheffield’s own Paul Lindley will be sharing his latest insight into establishing and growing a business. Paul will reflect on his experience with Ella’s Kitchen and Paddy’s Bathroom to give some high value advice for business managers, leaders and fellow entrepreneurs. Paul’s life changed with a simple answerphone message in 2005. Left for him by UK supermarket group Sainsbury’s, it said simply: “We are going to take a flyer on you.” It meant that four months later Sainsbury’s was going to start stocking Paul’s baby food brand, Ella’s Kitchen, at 350 of its stores across the country. So the first Ella’s Kitchen products arrived on Sainsbury’s shelves in early 2006 and were an immediate hit. Soon the UK’s other supermarkets were also stocking the brand.
Today, Oxfordshire-based Ella’s Kitchen is the UK’s best-selling baby food company, and its annual global turnover exceeds £100million. Three years after Ella’s Kitchen was first stocked by Sainsbury’s, it started to sell overseas, first to Sweden, Norway and the US. While the US business was successful, the brand faced a number of copycat rivals in the American market. In 2013 Paul agreed to sell Ella’s Kitchen to US food company Hain Celestial for $103.5million (£66million). Under the terms of the deal Mr Lindley has remained in the top job at Ella’s Kitchen, and divides his time between the UK and the US.

JOE McEWAN, HEAD OF DIGITAL AT INNOCENT DRINKS Joe McEwan began working for Innocent in 2007 and has dedicated all of his time there to building a thriving two-way relationship with Innocent’s community of drinkers. SHEFFIELD STUDENTS TURN ‘WEBPRENEURS’ WITH TWO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES
T
wo Sheffield Hallam University students have seen their creative design and marketing agency become so successful that they’ve expanded their portfolio with a sister company focusing on website hosting, telecoms and broadband. Daniel Hawksworth, 24, was just 18 when he set up his first creative business. While studying Computer Information Security at Sheffield Hallam he established a second – Hawkify UK – and moved his existing clients to the new company. He employed fellow student George Dorman, 21, and the two later became partners in the business. By adopting a personal approach and applying the skills learnt both inside and outside university, Daniel and George have grown the business to the point where it now employs seven people and has had to move into larger premises. The pair have also recently set up Hawkify
Internet. “Prior to university I had experience of running a business but my skills have developed so much more and I’ve had the backing of the Enterprise Team in setting up Hawkify UK and Hawkify Internet,” said Daniel. “The businesses have grown much quicker than we ever could have anticipated and we put that down to our personal approach. Clients have a named contact – many deal with me personally – and they get the support the need. We’re now working with a number of local companies from start-ups to multi-million pound organisations.”

When the lone Tory coined the phase “Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire” he was remonstrating against ruling left wing politicians of the day, whose radical policies were considered to be dragging the region into the mire. How mud sticks. It’s 30 years seen Margaret Thatcher abolished the county council, yet many outsiders – and those within – still believe Sheffield just does not care about business and entrepreneurship. Statistics paint a very different picture, however. Latest figures from StartUp Britain, the government-backed national campaign for entrepreneurs led by entrepreneurs, ranks Sheffield seventh in a table of the best UK towns and cities to start a business. It found that 8,052 new businesses were created in Sheffield in 2014 compared with 6,551 start-ups the year before. Leeds trailed 12th in the list. It is clear that starting a business has become more popular in recent years for a number reasons. Some put it down to the ease of home working and even TV programmes such as Dragons Den that have made the concept of entrepreneurship trendy. “Starting a business is easier, quicker and

cheaper than ever thanks to new technology,” said Luke Johnson, the chairman of the Centre for Entrepreneurs.

Yet anybody who has started a business, and many who seek to grow in the early years, soon realise they need expert business support to make a success of their ventures.

There is plenty of such support available in the Sheffield region – and it is this assistance that has proved pivotal in growing the numbers of new businesses.
What really sets the city and its wider region apart in terms of its support for businesses are the two universities.
The first point of call for many people is Business Sheffield, the support agency run by the city council backed organisation, Creative Sheffield. It has survived budget issues to continue to give free support to those looking to start a business, become self-employed or expand, offering sound advice, honest appraisals and invaluable assistance on the formulation of business plans, pricing, accountancy and tax issues. Weekly drop-in days – information sessions that are helpful for ironing out little niggles – are at hand along with

It’s an offer grasped by a growing number of companies across the sectors and is creating wealth, jobs and opportunities. The Management School sends its students out on placement to local business, many of them SMEs, and the result is often a “win-win” with students benefitting from experience when companies put them to work on specialist projects which they don’t have the expertise or time to pursue on their own. Another part of business creation stemming from the University of Sheffield is University Sheffield Enterprise, an organisation that helps its students and former learners get on the ladder as business start-ups by offering the full range of services from workshops, events, mentoring, business planning, grants, loans, funding, skill building, support, further study, information, networking and even room bookings.
Another scheme to help start-ups in the creative industries was launched this summer. Named Re: New, it’s based on a successful Australian model. It helps people get their businesses off the ground by giving them access to unused buildings in the city centre. Meanwhile, Hallam University’s Sheffield Business School which supports students and local companies continues to assist local companies and create its own headlines at the same time. It has just been shortlisted for the second year running for ‘Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education (THE) awards. Hallam boasts the largest modern business school in Britain with around 8,000 students studying a range of business subjects. It is active in more than 30 international markets and is one of the largest placement suppliers in the country, with companies as diverse as Marks & Spencer, GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce. Meanwhile Hallam’s Enterprise Team, which supports any student or past graduate of up to five years with advice from experts and office space,
workshops and funding, has a new success story to tell. Former student Leon Reed’s whose app, The Meal Wheel, designed to introduce people to new restaurants and cafes in their area, can be now downloaded from the Apple app store. Leon, aged 27, who moved to Sheffield in 2008 to study Fine Art and still lives in the city, said: “It can be used by anyone, anywhere in the world who can’t decide where to eat. “Even if you’re on holiday and in new surroundings The Meal Wheel can find you a little bit of food heaven in unfamiliar places. “Having an idea for an app, designing and developing it into the vision you had then letting the whole world see what you’ve come up with just by clicking download is incredible,” added Leon. The app will be available for Android users in November, when it will be officially launched. He is also behind the Breadbreadbread and Christmas Dinners apps.

Your manager will not only supervise your employees but will also have to make important decisions that will directly affect the future profitability of the business. There are certain qualities which any manager must have. First and foremost, your manager must understand the importance of appreciating and respecting your employees. If your employees are demonstrably appreciated this will boost their morale and lead to better performance, which will, of course, maintain and increase the profitability of your new business. Your manager must understand the business and be in a position to provide the employees with the resources they need to do their jobs. It can be extremely demotivating for employees if they are asked to carry out tasks and meet goals without receiving the proper support and resources. Consequently, your manager must be able to properly train your employees how to use the latest technology, how to work in teams and provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to grow the business. Another crucial quality your manager will need is the knowledge to compete effectively. You will need to be satisfied that your manager is aware of all the current issues affecting your business and

For instance, is there a business development manager, or will the MD need to carry out this role and, therefore, need sales experience? The qualities and experience required by the person you are looking for will differ from business to business dependent on its size, market sector, number of employees, management structure and ambitions of the shareholders for growth. If I were in your shoes, having decided on the behaviours that I was looking for, I would then employ the use of psychometric testing (I like to use The Colour Works, but there are many other programmes available to use) as part of the recruitment process. Finally, the most important factor for me would be the chemistry between yourself and the new manager. How trustworthy do they seem and how authentic are they? You need complete peace of mind and trust in the individual if you are not going to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business, formalising a dashboard that will give you the KPI`s and ensuring that these are reported accurately to you consistently. This will allow you to keep a close eye on the performance of the business from afar.

There are a number of extrinsic rewards that have a short-term impact on motivation. Salary increases, company stock options, bonuses, vacation days or upgrades to the work environment will be appreciated by your employees. However all of these basic motivational tools can become ‘de-motivators’ if they are not used fairly. Employees will compare their compensation packages with others, and will become discouraged if they perceive inequities.

Sherry Coutu’s 2014 scale-up report on UK economic growth presented evidence that the majority of net employment growth comes from a relatively small number of highly productive, fast growing firms. Coutu identified scale-ups as businesses with at least 10 employees which have the ability to grow by 20 per cent year on year for three years. The real key to ensuring these businesses grow as quickly and successfully as possible is providing adequate wrap-around support. According to Coutu, scale-up leaders need four main areas of support: access to private finance, access to flexible rent arrangements, super-fast broadband and access to like-minded entrepreneurs. MADE certainly delivers access to other entrepreneurs and access to finance.
‘IT’S LIKE GLASTONBURY FOR BUSINESS’ This is what someone said about a previous MADE event; and it makes so much sense. There is a great buzz to it, people come from all over to go to it and it gets busier every year. It is all about maximising new connections and building relationships over that week. If you come to MADE you are going to meet so many people who you wouldn’t usually get a chance to meet, many of whom are on the same journey as you. You will also meet professionals who can help you grow your business, such as IP attorneys, lawyers, accountants and support organisations. Going back to scale-ups, these businesses need leaders with the ability and willingness to invest in their own leadership skills. Typically, these are entrepreneurs who go out and invest in their own skills then use these skills to build their management team. Knowing where to start can often be the hardest step; and MADE can prove an ideal starting point. With all kinds of business support under one roof as well as a programme of fringe activity involving useful workshops, now could be the time to begin your scaling up journey.
AVOID THAT ‘MORNING AFTER’ FEELING We’ve all been there. Attended a business event, listened eagerly to the speakers, jotted down notes, gone away feeling inspired… then turned up to the office

the next day only to be immediately greeted with tons of queries and a backlog of work to catch up on from a day or two away from your desk. Here are my top tips to get the most out of MADE and return to your office ready and able to take action.

Delegate This starts before you leave the office. Where possible arrange for someone else to deal with straightforward queries in your absence so you don’t have a pile of simple but time-consuming jobs to attend to when you arrive back.

Plan Look at the schedule in advance and book yourself on to as many workshops as your schedule permits. There is a big push on exporting this year so if you think there is potential to sell your products outside of this country then make sure you sign up and take advantage of the free advice.
3 Network. It’s an obvious one but do it as much as possible. A real value contact can be priceless. You might not need them right now but you could do in the future. 4
Collect cards. Again, it may sound obvious but make sure you take a business card from everyone you chat to; even if it is just someone you make small talk with.

Connect. Once you get back to the office – or even on the train on your way home – make sure you connect with the people you have met. Drop them an invitation on LinkedIn or send them a quick email letting them know it was good to meet them. Never forget the old adage of ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’. It’s not always the case but it never hurts to have plenty of contacts.

rom café spaces to non-food stalls, a range of discounted space is currently available to local businesses wanting to trade in the city centre. Weekly visitors to the Moor Market have increased from 54,000 to 56,000 in last 13 weeks and the range of pop-up shops is proving popular with local businesses wanting a city centre base to trade from. The new pop-up shops offer businesses a creative way of showcasing their wares to city centre shoppers in a simple but cost effective way. There are five kitsch market barrows available to rent at £25 a day to new or existing stallholders looking to pitch up in the market foyer. Matt Cockayne, of Goo-Design, who recently rented a barrow said: “I came to the Moor Market to launch my market exhibition so it was a brilliant opportunity to bring along a host of my prints, t-shirts, mugs and phone covers to showcase to shoppers at the same time.
“I do the majority of my business online so it was really nice to get out and show what I do to people first hand. “The barrows are eye-catching and interesting for customers. I’d definitely rent one again and would encourage other businesses to have a go too. It’s a really cheap alternative to having a stall or shop premises and for getting your business known to a different audience.” The Moor Market is also currently offering reduced rents on stalls. fter the overwhelming success of the first three events, the countdown is on to the fourth SheffEX festival, tipped to be bigger and better than ever before. Helping to ensure SheffEX is the only place to be on Monday 7 December, former sports minister Richard Caborn will be giving a speech to delegates. Currently one of the most talked about individuals in the Sheffield city region, Mr Caborn is heavily involved in some of the city’s most ambitious projects, including the Olympic Legacy Park, City Centre 2050 and Factory 2050, the first building on a new advanced manufacturing park on the site of the former Sheffield Airport. Of course, it was Mr Caborn who also secured £6m of Government funding 15 years ago for the original and phenomenally successful Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). Tony Carroll, who organises SheffEX along with brothers Mark and Andy McCormick, said: “We are delighted that SheffEX has firmly made its mark and
attracted someone as prominent as Richard Caborn to come along and speak to the business community. “One of the key aims of SheffEX is to give local companies a platform to shout about how great they are at what they do and how fabulous a city Sheffield is. CASH IN ON THOSE CLICKS t is 2015 and search engine marketing has changed forever – as a result of Google’s vastly improved ability to serve highly relevant and spam free search results.
I
Just three to four years ago, searchers were commonly forced to wade through pages and pages of spam, created by sneaky SEOs or even hackers, to get to the websites they wanted. The real winners during the ‘wild west’ era of the internet were often the cowboys – those who were willing to try to cheat Google’s rankings system to get on to page one. Now, savvy search engine marketers will tell you those tactics could get your website banned from Google and do long-term damage to your business. Unfortunately, a by-product of the changes is that it is harder for firms to challenge big brands who often dominate Google’s page one. And while legitimate SEO techniques still play an important role in online marketing strategies, it’s now pay-per-click advertising which often represents the most cost effective way of reaching your customers online. AdWords is Google’s version of pay-perclick advertising, and it’s almost guaranteed that some of your competitors are using this platform to reach your customers. As an approved Google Partner agency, we’re very keen to dispel some common myths about using the AdWords programme.
GOOGLE ADWORDS WON’T WORK FOR MY BUSINESS It almost certainly will. There’s no business in the world which doesn’t benefit from being seen by more customers. Whether your business is online or offline, a well-managed AdWords account is guaranteed to lead to more calls, enquiries, emails and sales.
WE’VE TRIED IT ALREADY AND WE DIDN’T GET ANY RESULTS It is very easy to dip a toe into the world of AdWords. However it is very unlikely the basic settings will be optimal, resulting in a low ‘Quality Score’ – which has a dramatic effect on how much you pay-per-click, and therefore on the effectiveness of your account.
I DON’T CLICK ON ADWORDS ADS – SO MY CUSTOMERS WON’T EITHER. It’s true that some customers deliberately avoid clicking on ads. However, around 15 to 20 per cent of all searches result in a customer clicking an ad. And there’s no cost involved when a searcher does not click the ad.

world-leading expert on low carbon supply chains, Professor Lenny Koh will join Oliver Coppard (Sheffield City Region LEP) and Teresa Hitchcock (DLA Piper) as co-chair of the LEP’s low carbon sector group for the next 12 months. The group will also be rebranded to become the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group. Representing the education sector, Lenny, from the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Social Sciences’ Management School, will engage with the region’s businesses to understand what industry needs to move forward. Renowned internationally for her expertise in low carbon supply chains, resource efficiency and sustainability, Lenny is director of the Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre (AREC) from the University of Sheffield and recently published an award-winning paper on recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment. The paper found that recycling electronic waste was equal to 2.15 billion euros in overall potential revenue to the European market in 2014 which could rise to 3.67 billion euros by 2020. As well as providing a significant source of revenue, more effective recovery of materials could benefit the environment by reducing
manufacturers’ reliance on unprocessed resources. Lenny published the paper along with colleagues Federica Cucciella, Idiano D’Adomo and Paolo Rosa from the University of L’Aquila and Politecnico di Milano. The research has since been recognised by academic publisher Elsevier with the prestigious Atlas Award. The award recognises scientific research that has an impact on people around the world and is selected by an advisory board based on suggestions from the publishers of Elsevier’s 1,800 journals each month. Lenny said: “What we have found in the paper is useful across a range of industries and sectors and will potentially inform society, policy and regulatory making bodies such as the EU for the implementation of regulations and laws in terms of recycling so we can recover waste and turn that into useful resources. As we have discovered from this paper there are so many useful materials that are being thrown away in landfill yet recovery of these materials can give them a second life so we can all reduce our reliance on virgin materials. “We are hoping there will be a lot of
businesses in this region that benefit from the paper in terms of the recovery and recycling of materials, particularly those in the aviation, telecoms, automotive and energy sectors; however other types of businesses will also indirectly benefit. “By increasing awareness we aim for the Sheffield city region to become a hub for sustainability.” Lenny is hopeful that taking up the position of co-chair on the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group will help raise the profile of the sustainability agenda. “The Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre is already active in the region but by further highlighting its work more businesses across all sectors will be able to benefit and have greater involvement in the AREC.” The first outing of the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group was a visit to Microsoft in London on 24 September. CLAIRE BELL, CJ SIGNS Claire Bell knows that running a successful business extends outside of the office and beyond 9-5; and that’s why she has recently turned her attentions to networking and further raising the profile of the business. Co-director of vehicle wrapping company CJ signs with her husband Jason, for the last decade Claire has focused mainly on administrative activities such as accounts, payroll and marketing. But at the beginning of 2015 Claire organised an open day to coincide with the company’s move to larger premises – and she’s never looked back. “It’s gone absolutely bonkers!” said Claire. “We were busy before but we haven’t

Lisa Brown started working at NRC Services as a cleaner and 11 years on she has climbed the ranks to become Contracts Manager. Her position now involves managing around 100 cleaning staff, based at approximately 70 sites. She has a great deal of face-to-face involvement with customers and is responsible for ensuring they all receive high standards of customer service.
Mandy Tyler is well recognised in the area as a leading sales, marketing and events manager. Having worked in the industry for over 30 years she has recently taken on a new appointment, heading up the Marketing Team at The Sitwell Arms Hotel. Her role involves the organising and marketing of all of the hotel’s events, weddings and conferences.
“I started at NRC in a part-time cleaning job while I was studying Leisure and Tourism as I actually wanted to be an air hostess,” said Lisa. “Thankfully I made the right decision and continued to work here full-time, progressing to Area Supervisor before securing this role. “Because I’ve been a cleaner myself I understand that each member of the team needs the same attention as any other employee, even the managers. To do their jobs properly they need to have that mop, that bucket, those cleaning products – and it’s down to me to make sure they have everything they need. If you look after your staff they look after you.” Lisa is just one of a team of dedicated women who ensure that business runs smoothly at NRC. Anne Taylor has recently been appointed as Cleaning

Dawn Eccles started five years ago as an administrator for the building and electrical department and was appointed to Office Manager in 2013. Dawn now oversees the administration team who are Helen Elsey, Katy Lee, Leanne Dale, Hollee Gibson and Susan Sheerin; together they are responsible for all of the company’s paperwork, from quotes to invoicing, from paying suppliers to chasing aged debt and everything in between. “The women here are definitely an important part of the business,” said Dawn. “We are in the background helping the guys with the day to day paperwork to ease their workloads. The guys may call it nagging but we call it helping!”
“Having delivered outside events to the Sitwell in a previous role, I knew exactly how the hotel and staff work, and our relationship was already under construction, so I was thrilled to join the team,” said Mandy. “I am very passionate about delivering excellence, and very excited to be able to demonstrate this in my new role. RITA HOWSON, SUPPORT DOGS When Support Dogs was first set up 23 years ago Rita Howson was quick to offer her services as a volunteer dog trainer. Several years later she was given a salaried position, went on to became dog training manager, then director of operations and finally, 18 months ago, was appointed chief executive. Rita has seen the charity go through some challenging times, including the departure of the founder and several employees in 2004 which left just Rita, two other dog trainers and a couple of dedicated board members to build Support Dogs back up. The charity also suffered a massive setback in 2007 when the Sheffield floods destroyed the building it occupied. Rita – together with the support of her team – has managed to get the charity well and truly back on its feet, to the point where it has a huge waiting list for support dogs to assist people with physical disabilities, autism and epilepsy. Her ambition is to eventually move the charity into more suitable premises to enable Support Dogs to assist more individuals and better cater
for the needs of those it supports. “We’ve come through some difficult times but even during these challenging periods we have made sure we have maintained support for all our clients and accepted new applications,” said Rita. “Our aim over the next few years is to move into purposebuild premises such as a small-holding on the outskirts of Sheffield. “We serve the whole of the UK and currently when clients come from across the country we put them up in hotels and we also need to rent out spaces to deliver group training. It would be incredible if we could put clients up overnight and have the capacity to deliver training on site, as well as being able to give our dogs plenty of space to run around and provide overnight kennels as well. “The demand for our services is overwhelming; every eight hours we receive a call from a family in need of our services. Currently we can only help about one in every 50 who contact us. We are currently on the lookout for people from the business world, particularly from a HR or Finance background to get involved with the charity and consider becoming a trustee. VICKY BROWN, LADIES’ CYCLE SPEEDWAY WORLD CHAMPION Vicky Brown knows the true meaning of ‘making an impact’ after being crowned ladies’ cycle speedway world champion. As if that wasn’t enough just a few weeks later she scooped the British women’s outdoor gold medal and became the only woman ever to have won both prestigious titles in the same year. At the second event – the British Outdoor Championship – she won all five of her races with a 20-point maximum, despite heavy rain churning the Ipswich track to a mire and feeling the weight of expectation heavy on her shoulders. The 22-year-old Sheffield Hallam sports coaching student – who also works at Wosskow Brown solicitors – applied an approach she had learnt in class to overcome the obstacles. “I walked in as world champion and that piled on the pressure,” said Vicky. “I didn’t get the luck of the draw in track position for four of my five finals races and felt so negative I convinced myself I’d got no chance. However, I turned the negatives into a positive by telling myself that if I had no chance, there was no pressure on me. My university teacher Dave Hembrough, a strength and conditioning coach who is into sports psychology, had told me about Positive Mental Attitude and I’ve used it to redirect the way I think. It’s amazingly effective.”
AMY REVELL, M3 Amy Revell has been in the construction industry for just over five years and has worked her way up from sales support to m3’s business development manager. Starting her career with a small specialist contractor, Amy was exposed to all levels of the business operation and developed her understanding of the core business principals you need to succeed. Throughout her career Amy has seen more women come into the industry and wanted to play a part in educating and encouraging the younger generation, whilst creating an opportunity to network with new and experienced women across all sectors of the construction industry. Amy is now deputy chair of the East Midlands division of the National Association of Women in Construction. Working with schools and colleges to inspire and inform young girls and boys, as well as creating a support network for other women in the industry, the association encourages individuals to pursue, establish and sustain successful careers in the construction industry. Amy’s ultimate aim is to promote the positives in the construction industry as a whole and to highlight the fantastic work carried out by the professionals working within it. m3 has fully supported Amy’s involvement with the committee, enforcing how the industry views this as a positive and valuable contribution to businesses.

ANOTHER E-VAN MAKES TRACKS DURHAM DUPLEX IS THE LATEST COMPANY TO GO-GREEN BY SWITCHING TO AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.
T
he South Yorkshire Inmotion! Electric Vehicle scheme is picking up momentum, with yet another Nissan e-NV200 on our roads adding to the local cleaner, greener air cause. The Inmotion! programme is helping businesses across the county to introduce electric vehicles into their fleet, with the multi award-winning Nissan electric van proving to be very popular. Collectively, vehicles leased through the Inmotion! programme have covered 31,500 miles and companies have saved a combined total of £3,492* contributing positively to local air quality by reducing their CO2 footprint by 6.3 tonnes. Durham Duplex, an international company which manufactures and distributes a range of over 14,000 different machine knives and industrial blades, recently introduced a plug-in electric van to its fleet. Clive Wrenn, Durham Duplex, dispatch manager, said: “Making the switch to an electric vehicle seemed an easy thing to do, which helps the environment and reduces our emissions. The van is really good and its range is more than adequate for our local requirements, although it does take a bit of getting used to as there is no engine noise when you are driving.” Businesses discovering the benefits of cleaner, lower-cost electric vehicles include South Yorkshire Housing
Association, Sheffield United Community Foundation, Stagecoach Supertram, SVM Europe, Action Recruitment Europe Ltd, Energytest Ltd and PJ Taste. Peter Moulam, PJ Taste owner, said: “The benefits have been the recognition from our customers that we are using a sustainable delivery method, along with extremely low running costs and zero charges for parking in Sheffield. The zero car tax is a bonus and as we purchased through the Inmotion! Electric Vehicles leasing scheme it provides the peace of mind that the servicing costs are covered too.” South Yorkshire’s Electric Vehicle Project runs until 31 March 2016 and offers businesses a grant of up to £10,500 for the flexible lease of a plug-in van or £7,500 for a plug-in car for up to 48 months. An additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a workplace charging point is also available. Current plug-in vehicles offered through
the scheme include the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, Volkswagen e-Up, Volkswagen e-Golf, Renault Kangoo and Nissan e-NV200, with flexible lease terms from 12 to 48 months. The Inmotion! programme is also providing a number of free to use fast and rapid charging points across the region, and the number is growing. The charging points allow vehicles to be fully charged in just 20 minutes by a rapid and three to four hours via a fast charging point. Inmotion! locations include: Meadowhall; Carver Lane in Sheffield; Drummond Street in Rotherham; the Advanced Manufacturing Park; the Lakeside Shopping Centre in Doncaster and the Barnsley Market multi-storey car park. *£4,095 assuming 13p per mile in an ICE car and £603 assuming 2p per mile for electric. WORK AND PLAY NEWS, ACHIEVEMENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND NEW FACES APPRENTICES TAKE A SWING AT CHARITY CHALLENGE A diverse group of manufacturing and engineering companies joined forces with University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre apprentices to raise over £5,000 for their 2015 Master Cutler’s Challenge charity golf day. Thirteen teams took part with dinner and a raffle after the golf. The apprentices raised a grand total of £5,762. DavyMarkham won the AMRC Apprentices’ annual charity challenge trophy designed by the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing. Sponsored by Sheffield rotary cutting tools provider Technicut Ltd, the trophy was sintered in titanium by Sheffield-based The Mercury Centre.

STARBUCKS STAFF FULL OF BEANS Staff at eight Starbucks branches across the city have reached their £25,000 fundraising target for The Children’s Hospital Charity. The five branches across Sheffield and three in Meadowhall were united two years ago by a goal of reaching the target to sponsor a private room in a new wing being built at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The branches have held countless fundraising events over the last two years, from running marathons, fancy dress days and cake bakes to selling charity merchandise to boost their total.
HELP WITH CHINESE MISSION Chinese speaking graduates from the University of Sheffield are to team up with businesses in the city to help them prepare for a special trade visit to China. Under the University’s Great Ambassadors (China) Scheme’s new Platinum Club project, 10 SMEs in the city, which already have plans to trade in China, will be offered support to recruit a graduate who will be able to help them get ready for a trade visit to Beijing in March next year. The initiative is part of the Sheffield in China project, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University to promote the Sheffield brand to enhance trade links with China.
