A rich history of architecture
BUILDINGS FROM THE TUDOR, EDWARDIAN, CLASSICAL AND GOTHIC REVIVAL STYLES CAN STILL BE FOUND IN SHEFFIELD AND CHESTERFIELD. IRIS ADAMS
TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE GREATEST ARCHITECTURAL TRIUMPHS.
Firth Court
Completed in 1905, Firth Court was the first purpose-built university building in Sheffield. Local steelworkers, coalminers and factory workers donated an equivalent of £15million to help found the University of Sheffield. This Edwardian red brick is still in constant use today. Firth Hall is one of the University’s performance spaces, often used for classical concerts and performances by the University orchestra. Beside the Firth building is a neo-gothic style rotunda, opened for William Edgar Allen in 1909 and acted as the first University library. Ivy has now formed an iconic part of the building and it often the background for photos of smiling graduates.
Park Hill Estate
Built between 1975 and 1961, Park Hill Estates are a recognisable architectural feature of the Sheffield city skyline. The building is an example of brutalist architecture with its straight lines and concrete facade. Originally intended to be social, affordable housing, the buildings have been updated and architects have tried to brighten up the neutral tones with brightly coloured panels.
Sheffield City Council sold the estate to developers Urban Splash for £1 with the hopes of a successful refurbishment. However, they are now creating a private mixed-tenure estate made up of homes for rent, private sale, shared ownership, and student housing, while around a quarter of the units in the development will be social housing. The gentrification of this estate is a polarising venture. Some view the renovations as a practical and beneficial use of an abandoned building complex while to others it represents a failure of the welfare state and social housing.
Beauchief Abbey
On the outskirts of Sheffield, Beauchief Abbey lies surrounded by ancient woodland. Its history dates back to the Medieval period and it was initially built as a monastery in the 12th century. The building maintains its striking Medieval church tower and two Gothic archways. Henry VIII dissolved Beauchief Abbey in 1537 and the monastic estates were sold to Sir Nicholas Strelley for £223. Subsequently, the refectory was used as a dwelling and the chapter house as a wine cellar and lumber store. It became a family home named, ‘Beauchief Hall’ in 1671 and later returned to a parish church. Today, the modernised building is home to a thriving Church of England congregation.

The Sheffield Botanical GardensPaxton Pavilions
In 1834, a competition was held to find an architect who could design a glasshouse for the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Runner up Benjamen Broomhead was eventually tasked with the job and awarded £5 for his design entry. His Victorian style building was made up of three pavilions constructed with curvilinear wrought iron and glass domes supported by the fine ashlar columns which formed the outside walls. Little of the original building survives today, yet the overall shape remains true to Broomhead’s design. Today, visitors can enjoy the glasshouse free of charge, which holds many species of cacti, succulents and exoctic trees. Recently, excitement surrounded the Paxton Pavilions as the park closed due to the filming of an upcoming Kate Winslet film.
Winding Wheel Theatre
The Winding Wheel opened in 1923 as the Picture House and, in the late 1930s it was bought by the Odeon Cinema chain. As well as a cinema, the building housed a ballroom and a restaurant. It closed in 1981 but was bought by Chesterfield Borough Council, restored and refurbished, opening again in the late 80s as a conference and entertainment venue and later gained Grade II listed building status
Today, the Winding Wheel Theatre is home to Stage Bar and has three rooms which are regularly used for events these are the Auditorium, Function and Ballroom which has a beautiful stained glass dome over the dance floor.
Church of St Mary and All Saints
The ‘Crooked Spire’ is synonymous with Chesterfield and dominates the town’s skyline. The spire was added to the church in about 1362; its top is 228 feet (69m) above the ground. It is both twisted and leaning: the 45-degree twist causes the tip to lean 9 ft 6 in (2.9m) off centre.
The reason is uncertain and still debated: suggestions include lack of skilled workers because of the Black Death, which occurred as much of the church was being built; the use of insufficient cross bracing and ‘green timber’ – unseasoned timber; and also the 17th-century addition of 33 tons of lead sheeting covering the spire, resting on 14th-century bracing not designed to carry such weight.
Another theory is sunlight heating the south side of the tower and causing the lead there to expand at a greater rate than the north side, resulting in an unequal expansion. It is possible that the spire’s twist is due to a combination of these factors.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside
IF YOU’RE PLANNING A DAY TRIP THIS SUMMER, YOU’LL FIND PLENTY OF OPTIONS ON THE EAST COAST. BY REBECCA WALES.
Scarborough
Head further up the North Yorkshire coast and you’ll find Scarborough – the country’s oldest seaside resort. The town has been a popular holiday destination for hundreds of years and is renowned for its variety of attractions. Scarborough is home to a range of award-winning picturesque beaches that offer spectacular views of the coastline.
The North Bay Beach – which is celebrated for its cleanliness – has traditionally been the more peaceful end of the resort, with South Bay Beach being the main tourist area. The South Bay Beach is close to a variety of eateries, theatres, amusement arcades and other entertainment facilities, making it a favourite with visitors and locals alike.
The 12th century Scarborough Castle, which is situated on top of the rocky promontory, is a popular attraction. The former medieval Royal fortress has a fascinating past and is renowned for being one of North Yorkshire’s finest historic sites. The 12th century St Mary’s Church can also be found nearby, with its large graveyard featuring the grave of novelist Anne Brontë.
Attractions located in the town include the Rotunda Museum, which is one of the oldest purpose-built museums still in use in the UK. The museum is housed in a 19th century Grade II* listed building and features one of the foremost collections of Jurassic geology on the Yorkshire Coast.
Scarborough is also home to a variety of wonderful gardens and parks, including the South Cliff Gardens, Peasholm Park, Falsgrave Park and the Mere Country Park. Other popular attractions include the Alpamare Waterpark, Sea Life Scarborough, Scarborough Spa and Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
Whitby
The seaside town of Whitby has long been popular with visitors to Yorkshire’s coast, mainly because of its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. However the town’s attraction as a tourist destination is also enhanced by its proximity to the North York Moors and the heritage coastline. Whitby’s association with Gothic culture is reflected in its quirky streets, shops and abbey ruins. Situated at the top of East Cliff, the 7th century Whitby Abbey ruins are undoubtedly the town’s main tourist attraction. Alongside the ruins, the site also features a revamped museum and offers fantastic sea views over the coast.
Attractions located in the town include Whitby Museum, which exhibits specialist collections relating to Jurassic fossils, Whitby jet, Captain James Cook and the whaling industry. Whitby’s large sandy beach featuring donkey rides, colourful beach huts and a children’s paddling pool is also a popular attraction.

Cleethorpes Country Park, a 160-acre nature reserve, is a great place to spot wildlife. The one-mile path that runs around the big lake in the centre of the park is ideal for family walks.
One of the town’s most popular attractions is the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, which is one of the country’s oldest miniature seaside railways. The two-mile return journey offers visitors a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful views along the picturesque coast.
Skegness

Attractions located just outside of Skegness include Fantasy Island, an amusement park based in Ingoldmells, and the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve, which is renowned for its dynamic stretch of unspoilt coastline.
Bridlington
Situated further up the East Yorkshire coast is Bridlington, a charming seaside town renowned for its award-winning beaches and promenades. Bridlington is a popular tourist destination and its fantastic range of attractions offer something for everyone.
The scenic Bridlington North Beach is a popular tourist destination that offers visitors a range of traditional seaside activities. Situated next to the restored Edwardian North Promenade, the beach also offers stunning views of the impressive chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head.
The extensive Bridlington South Beach situated next to the Princess Mary Promenade also offers stunning views and is an excellent place to go for long walks.

Running alongside the beach is Saltburn’s Grade II* listed renovated pier, which is the only remaining pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast. To get down to the beach and pier, visitors can take the nineteenth century Saltburn Cliff Lift, which is the oldest operating water-powered funicular railway in the country. The town also has a miniature railway that follows the Skelton Beck through the Saltburn Valley Gardens.
Visitors to Saltburn can also enjoy going on various circular woodland walks in the tranquil Valley Gardens before stopping for a break at the Victorian tea rooms.

Make new memories
There will be many readers who have fond memories of The Dore Grill and will have been sad to see it close its doors after 36 years. Along with venues like Baldwins Omega and Tuckwoods, it holds a special place in Sheffield restaurant folklore – who can forget the sweet trolley which did the rounds at the end of your meal?
Now it’s down to the new generation to make new memories and the new tenants at 36 Church Lane will be hoping for similar success in the coming years.
The Dore, as it is now called, opened at the end of May and is operated by the same team behind Bank House in Hathersage. A £350,000 refurbishment has seen the venue completely transformed and is now home to a restaurant and bar as well as adjoining coffee shop and bakery, making it an allday venue. Indeed you can drop by for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just a drink if you prefer.
The recent weather has certainly helped The Dore quickly establish itself in the area thanks to a generous outdoor terrace, which was buzzing on the evening of our visit. Inside you’ll find contemporary décor with lots of greens, wood and florals as well as a gorgeous orangery dominated by an artificial
cherry blossom tree. It definitely feels like they’ve brought the outside inside.
Suitably seated we ordered drinks inkeeping with the warm weather – a large glass of Initmista Vinho Branco (£7.50) for me and an Aperol spritz (£9.50) for my wife – before perusing the menu. There’s an Italian/Mediterranean feel to it, with pizza, pasta and grills, and dishes including arancini, bruschetta and Tuscan chicken.
We started with buratta (£7), a soft, milky buffalo mozzarella cheese, which was service with confit heritage tomatoes, balsamic and rocket. If you could put summer on a plate, this wasn’t far off. My wife opted for the shell-on king prawns (£11), which were served with ‘nduja butter and crispy lilliput capers and served atop a slice of toasted Dore Bakery sourdough from next door.
The ‘grills’ section provided inspiration for main course and the porchetta (£19), rolled with garlic, sage and rosemary was well complemented by the truffle and parmesan mash and tenderstem broccoli. It was a hearty dish yet still retained those familiar, fresh summery flavours.
I can only describe my dish as The Dore’s version of ‘surf ‘n’ turf’ – an 8oz fillet steak with garlic king prawns (£39). The Dore use 28-day aged grass-fed steaks and this was the perfect
example, cooked medium-rare as requested and incredibly tender and flavoursome. I have to give special mention to the accompanying Dauphinoise chips too which were just fantastic, perfectly layered and crisp. Roasted vine tomatoes and an onion fritter completed the picture.
Dessert was a stretch too far for me so I settled for a Dark Peak blend coffee (£3.40), locally roasted from Castleton Coffee, whilst my wife indulged with a vanilla crème brûlée (£6) which was paired with a salted caramel ice cream and biscuit crumb.
Everything at The Dore was well cooked and beautifully presented and the staff were never too far away should you need anything. It has big boots to fill but looks already to be a big hit in the area and beyond. The Dore 36 Church Lane, Dore, Sheffield, S17 3GS Tel: 0114 262 0035 thedore.co.uk

Wanted: future stars
alling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2023.
The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 August 2023.
Competitors will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition on Monday 4 September at Sheffield College’s renowned MSK Academy Kitchen. We’ve come up with something a little different this year but you’ll have to wait and see what’s in store. All we’re saying is that all chefs will be encouraged to embrace their creative side.
Last year we were wowed by some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Our winner was Chris Parker from The George, Hathersage… so who’ll be named as our next rising star?
“It was nerve-wracking at first but I was confident I could produce a good dish,” said Chris. “I’m quite surprised to be fair. I thought Reece’s dish was really good and the other two guys were really good too. All the chefs showed great composure, were organised, had good
technical skills and cooked some excellent dishes.”
The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all a boost by placing them in the spotlight.
The results will be announced at the 2023 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – on Monday 30 October.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp. As well as his winner’s plaque, our young chef, Chri,s was presented with a Kiritsuke knife from the Global Knife range by Ben Grunwerg, managing director of our sponsors I Grunwerg Ltd.
We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved. But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know. The closing date for entries is Friday 11 August.
To make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk
Westside Readers’ Choice Award 2023
You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Westside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local café, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. 2022’s winner was The Wortley Arms, a stunning pub and restaurant in the north of Sheffield.
To vote go online to www.rmcmedia/events and let us know where you enjoy eating out most. All entries must include a home address and contact details, only one entry per email address is allowed.
Closing date: 13 October 2023

THE GNOME IS BACK... AND TURNING UP AT A MIDSUMMER’S EVE BALL.
Midsummer’s Eve Ball, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield Park, has raised over £41,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Organised by Kelsey Barrie, Nicola Fletcher, Rachel Ludlam, Natalie Drury, Helen Wragg, Deborah Newton, Alex Hill and Alex Baldwin, the event was also kindly supported by Joy HerseyTodd of Unique Weddings and Events.
The ball was attended by 250 guests who came together to raise money to support the hospital and thanks to ticket sales, raffles and a grand auction, over
£41,000 was raised in total.
The money raised will go towards specialist support workers for the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, ensuring every child receives the mental health support they need. These support workers are Charity-funded and aim to bridge the gap so that more children at risk of suicide can be supported to cope with their mental health.
The ball was a success thanks to the generosity of local businesses and friends of the organisers who donated raffle prizes, vouchers and auction prizes.
The group of friends came together in support of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, after signing up to trek to Petra in Jordan this November. The team have all self-funded the trek, meaning every penny raised will support the Charity.
Together, they will trek a total of 77km to the ancient red city of Petra, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
To support the ladies in their incredible challenge please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ TheIntrepid8 or scan the QR code at the bottom of the page.
Have you been caught on camera or got an event coming up? Send your pictures to richard.abbey@rmcmedia.co.uk and you could feature in next month’s magazine.

hoosing the right tiles can often make or break a home improvement project. Thankfully, you’re in safe hands with The Tile Place, a one-stop shop for all your tiling needs. The Dronfield business, conveniently located on Callywhite Lane, supplies high quality wall, floor tiles for all areas of the home as well as everything you need to fit them professionally.
Proprietor Julian Askham has been in the tiling business for over 25 years and
has a wealth of experience and knowledge. The showroom and trade centre spans two floors and is home to a huge variety of tiles, of all shapes, size and finish, giving you plenty of choice to get that finishing touch to your project just right. They stock ceramic, porcelain, stone, slate, limestone and even glass tiles, the majority of which are sourced from UK suppliers and distributors.
Hugely popular at the moment are wood effect tiles, perfect for flooring, and some of the attention to detail on them are stunning, right down to the fake ‘nails’ that adorn the edges – they genuinely look like the real thing. Patterned tiles remain on-trend and you’ll find all manner of styles and colours at The Tile Place.
If you’re in the market for more classic styles, the timeless ‘Metro’ - think
subway station - is still the go-to tile for many.
“We can supply everything people could hope to find, whether they are a domestic customer or they are in the trade,” said Julian.
“We offer a free measuring and a supply and fit service too and have tiles covering the entire market, from the lowest price range through to some expensive high quality tiles.”
Half of the ground floor at The Tile Place is a dedicated trade centre and stocks everything from adhesives to trims, grouts and sealants. They stock the Kerakoll Fugabella range of grouts, which come in 50 different colours, as well as matching sealants.
The Tile Place opens 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm Saturday and 10am-2pm Sunday.

EMMA BRITTON’S FLORAL WORKS CAN TRANSFORM YOUR INTERIORS. RICHARD ABBEY SPOKE TO THE DERBYSHIRE-BASED DESIGNER ABOUT MAKING A STATEMENT IN YOUR HOME AND MORE.
hen I speak to Emma Britton, she’s not long returned from Chelsea Flower Show, where she was exhibiting some of her latest work. But put all thoughts of show gardens out of your mind for Emma is not a gardener or landscape architect but a decorative glass designer whose work is usually found inside rather than outside.
Emma set up her independent design brand in 2010 and specialises in bespoke glass splashbacks for kitchens and bathrooms, which are adorned with her signature floral style. This can be anything from lupins and crocosmia to foxgloves and irises or even something more personal if you so wish. She also produces a range of matching homeware and glassware, all of which are decorated in her Derbyshire studio.
This studio is actually nestled in the middle of an industrial estate, which you may think unusual for a design brand, but Emma and her team don’t have to go far to find inspiration.
“We work out of a couple of small units dedicated to the different areas of the business from design, to decorative glassware production and glass splashback lamination,” Emma explained. “Although the setting is very industrial there’s a nature reserve to the back of us, full of beautiful silver birch trees and we’ve planted our own studio garden to inspire us and help the local insect population to thrive.”

Like many artists and designers, Emma draws inspiration for her surroundings and thrives on the juxtaposition of her environment.
“I like urban buildings and nature and how they cross over,” she added. “We have a bright blue shipping container next to our studio garden and the contrasting colour of the Lupins, Crocosmia and Foxgloves that spring up around it always inspire me.
“My own garden is a source of inspiration and suburban gardens really interest me - these in particular are the foundations for my designs.”
Emma is originally from Nottingham and studied Printed Textiles at Loughborough University but started working with glass and applying patterns to it in her second year. After graduating she was interested in working in the glass industry but was keen to explore how she could use her design skills to push the possibilities of the material. Unlike glass artists and makers that come from a traditional background, Emma works with glass and its potential from the perspective of a pattern designer,

Country garden glass splashback
which has given her and the business a real USP.
So why splashbacks?
“There was nothing like it on the market in 2010,” she said matter-offactly. “I saw there was an opportunity to put pattern onto glass differently, in new and innovative ways to create something decorative and functional for interiors. I already worked with architects and interior designers looking for something different, so I knew there would be demand for my glass splashbacks.”
For splashbacks, clients can either choose a design from one of six collections or work with Emma to create something just for them taking into
account their colour and design preferences and the space they want it for.
You can also choose something completely bespoke, which has led to one or two unusual requests.
“A client once asked me to paint a splashback with her cat in it; I refused the commission until I’d done a sketch of it just to make sure I could get the likeness as I’m not a pet artist, so I was really feeling the pressure!” she said. “In the end I created a really beautiful piece with her cats peeping through some Iris. I’m a big believer in your splashback being integrated into the design of your kitchen or bathroom and not a picture, so this really balanced my design principles with what my client wanted.”
Emma has always incorporated flowers into her work and, naturally, her designs have developed over the years. She uses a mix of artisan techniques, machinery and technology to create the splashbacks.
“I come from a family of engineers so making things and the processes available in manufacturing are in my DNA,” she laughed.
The popularity of Emma’s work has not gone unnoticed and she has worked with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) for a number of years, recently launching her fourth exclusive glassware collection Floral & Bees. Inspired by RHS Wisley’s World Food Garden, the glassware pattern features all the edible flowers in the garden and was something Emma describes as being a ‘pleasure to make’.
In addition, Emma has a bespoke glassware collection launching this summer for The Hepworth Wakefield featuring Echinacea and Salvia, inspired by the amazing Tom Stuart Smith garden. And she’s not stopping there –“There are some other cool commissions in the pipeline and due for release soon,” she added. “We are currently expanding into America and as a team we are working hard on making our working practices more sustainable.”

The SUV that shines
Volkswagen is upgrading the third generation of the Touareg with extensive improvements: the suspension as well as the display and operating concept of the fullsize SUV have been revised, and the front and rear design have been sharpened.
Particularly striking features are the newly developed HD LED matrix headlights at the front and the LED taillights, which are realised as a light strip.
The new Touareg will be launched in five powertrain versions. In addition to a turbocharged petrol engine4, there is a choice of two turbodiesel engines and two plug-in hybrids. All highly efficient engines are paired as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.
The Touareg R eHybrid is the top-of-the-range model of the product line with the most powerful drive system: a V6 petrol engine plus electric motor with a system output of 340 kW (462 PS).
