The Lights of ABRAHAM

A magical new lights trail for this winter season.

The Heights of Abraham announces an exciting and new event for the coming winter season - ‘The Lights of Abraham’ is a stunning light trail which will allow visitors to experience the magic of this family-friendly attraction in a brand new and enchanting light.

The event will extend the usual opening season at the Heights, taking place from Friday 22 November until Monday 30 December, and welcomes visitors of all ages to experience the Heights

The light trail begins on the approach to the cable car base station itself, a festoon-lit riverside walk from the town of Matlock Bath, before alighting your gondola cable

to reach the summit of another world. As you ascend, see the myriad of lights in the town and colourful riverside approach all twinkling below.

Upon arrival at the summit, join the lights trail which will lead through illuminated

gardens, across boardwalks and woodland pathways – an illuminous adventure during which some interesting characters and magical scenes will unfold along the way. The trail will take approximately one hour, with extra time for refreshments.

To add even more enjoyment to the seasonal atmosphere there are delectable treats and toasty warm drinks to sustain adventurers, including hot chocolate, freshly-made mince pies, novelty cakes and festive biscuits – children and adults alike can enjoy connecting around glowing

starry sky.

Visitors are welcome to browse at their leisure and the Masson Pavilion exhibition will be open along with Gift Shop and Vista bar, and the café will be open for refreshments.

The Lights of Abraham will be a wonderful way in which to round off a spectacular year of celebrations, during which the Heights has marked two milestone

anniversaries – its Ruby anniversary of the introduction of the cable cars, and its Golden taken over by the Pugh family in 1974.

This double anniversary year will be an especially memorable one in The Heights’ 237-year long history, as it has been entertaining visitors to the Peak District since 1787.

Online booking is now open. Tickets are priced at: £21 adult; £15 child (under 3 years and carers, Free) This event is not included in the annual pass as it is outside of the main season. Visit www.

Festival of LIGHT

Sophie shares her memories of dad John’s St Luke’s Hospice Christmas.

or Sophie Middleton and her family, the 2024 St Luke’s Hospice Festival of Light will be a very special opportunity to celebrate the life of dad John.

F

traditions, the St Luke’s Festival of Light is the annual celebration that sees thousands of lights brighten the charity’s Little Common Lane garden, all dedicated in memory of loved ones.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday 1 December and will be hosted by BBC Look North presenter and St Luke’s supporter Tom Ingall.

Sophie is supporting the Festival of Light as a memorial to dad John, who enjoyed his last Christmas with family thanks to the support of the St Luke’s team.

“The most incredible thing about St Luke’s is that they can turn the worse experience of your life into something very special…and that’s exactly what they did for my dad John,” says Sophie, who lives with her family in Wisewood.

“Dad had cancer and had been a St Luke’s community patient but in December last year he was brought into the hospice for pain management.

“We’d got a pub booked for a family get together but dad was in too much pain to go so St Luke’s gave us a brilliant Christmas morning without him having to go anywhere.

“My daughter Poppy - who was the apple of her grandad’s eye - was there and Santa even came and gave out presents.

“They trimmed everything up, they played festive music and there was a lovely breakfast for us - it was just amazing!

“Dad did get to go home but St Luke’s was where he needed to be and our main focus was to get him back there for the last

“My brother Jack and I stayed with him and were there right until he died and being at St Luke’s helped us both so much.

“We were in beds beside dad and in a

funny way it was like we’d gone back to being kids again - it was so comforting.

“St Luke’s became like extended family to us and we can never give enough back in return for what they did for dad, Jack and I, our family and friends who came to visit.

“When Poppy came to visit, nobody batted an eyelid that she whizzed her grandad up and down the corridor in his wheelchair.

“St Luke’s is beyond anything you could ever imagine - it’s magical.

“You know why you’re there, but for a short while you can forget, thanks to the amazing care you and your loved one

receive from everyone.

“I didn’t think I’d ever need St Luke’s - you never do - but now we’ve had their support and they have been there for us I want to give them everything I can.”

on, visitors to this year’s Festival of Light can enjoy mulled wine and other seasonal drinks, along with food – with vegetarian and, vegan and gluten-free options available – from a range of local street vendors.

New for this year, a Family Photo Area will be a dedicated space to capture more special memories and there will also be live music provided by some special guests throughout the event.

Finding some FAVOURITES

Our resident wine expert Trevor Langley shares some his treasured tipples.

Many people enjoy a favourite wine, either by itself or when accompanying foods.

Certainly, in these modern times, there are numerous choices, including dry, medium, sweet and sparkling productions all being available, from supermarkets, independent wine merchants and online too.

Red wines display ripe, juicy dark fruits and do pair with steaks, red meats and other dishes particularly well – and are very much enjoyed by themselves, perhaps in a quiet moment (or two).

Sparkling wines have, for many years, been an absolute joy. Great for welcoming guests with, to accompany food and fabulous for parties, celebrations and events, these delectations continue to grow in popularity, constantly. Also, sparkling wines are hugely popular, when a peaceful time occurs – away from today’s hustle and bustle.

Dry red wines are very popular, with casual drinkers and connoisseurs having their own favourites. Pinot Noir is one of the grape varieties that produces excellent wines.

Alte Vogtei zu Ravensburg has most splendid wine productions. Their superb organic Pinot Noir (12.5% vol) dry wine is very popular. Wine making here is documented back to at least 1251. The grapes, for their Pinot Noir wine, are carefully hand-picked. Baden – and a lot of Germany’s wine producing regions – offer many delights. I like this wine, very much indeed.

From Italy, Primitivo Salento (14% vol) is highly appreciated and enjoyed. Masseria Metrano produces excellent wines. This dry, red production is wonderful to accompany many dishes.

Prosecco is much loved as a sparkling wine and Allini has a wonderful production (11% vol) from Treviso, Italy. This brut wine is presented in a very attractive gold-coloured bottle and makes a great ‘talking point’ at countless dining tables.

Cava is a further immensely popular sparkling wine. Amorany (11.5% vol) pleases many and is widely used for celebrations and events. This Spanish brut delight is very much a major contender in the stakes for delightful, enticing sparkling wine productions.

I located these wines, plus an excellent selection of still white wines, at a Lidl store. It is most worthwhile, in my opinion, looking at the wines and other beverages in Lidl’s sections for drinks and in-store advice is always available. Their website is very informative. www.lidl.co.uk

As always, enjoy!

Making an IMPRESSION

Chef Tom Lawson’s latest venture has got off to a sound start, writes Richard Abbey.

hen chef Tom Lawson announced that he was leaving Rafters after ten years at the helm, I’m sure that more than a few eyebrows were raised. But Tom wanted to follow his own, new path and found a new challenge in the form of The Psalter.

The pub and hotel has suffered mixed fortunes in recent years and has perhaps been crying out for a new identity and a clear direction. Step forward Tom and his team who have completely renovated the venue, creating new bar and restaurant spaces as well as maintaining and updating the 21-bedroom hotel.

step down into the bar area is that it’s considerably smaller than previous. Tom has reduced the length of the bar by almost two-thirds to create a larger kitchen space, resulting in an intimate space with dark blue walls, brown leather seating and the splash of yellow neon here and there.

You don’t have to be visiting the restaurant to sample the bar, which was busy on the evening of our visit, and has a good selection of draught ales as well as wines and cocktails, the latter of which which touch on later.

Tom certainly knows his way around the kitchen and has devised a menu that has a

staff recommending three to four dishes per person, depending on how hungry you are. Dishes are brought to your table as and when they are ready.

Drinks seemed like a good place to start and the Tonada Merlot from Chile (£25 bottle) was well balanced and paired well with our chosen dishes.

We started with what we were told is

ribs with chilli and lime salt (£6) - which were salty, spicy, tangy and just delicious.

Oyster mushrooms with a Hendos glaze (£7) soon followed and were sweet and earthy whilst the tenderstem broccoli with black garlic ketchup and cashews (£6) had a lovely smoky taste. Our other veggie option were well-cooked chips (£8) which were served with Old Winchester Cheese and a homemade mayo (£8).

Wortley lamb cutlets (£14) were cooked pink, meaty and served with a salsa verde

came with a not-too-spicy madras sauce and coriander oil (£18).

cracker (£5) - and one sweet plate - maple

cheesecake, Yorkshire strawberries, candied oats (£6), both of which were excellent.

Just as we were thought we were of the Psalter’s signature coffee cocktails (made with Roastology coffee) so tried two different versions of their espresso martinis (£12 each): a classic version and Yorkshire Cream version really hit the spot

impressive evening.

Service throughout was exemplary and led by restaurant manager, Amy, who has joined Tom from Riverside House.

The Psalter opens for brunch 8am2.30pm, lunch 12-2.30pm and tea/dinner from 5-9pm. And another thing to look out for is Sunday lunches which launch this month and are sure to be a hit.

Comparisons are inevitable, and perhaps

are anything to go by, The Psalter has got off to a sound start. A busy bar and restaurant is always a good sign and there’s plenty to keep you coming back for more, which is even better.
