Time to call in the professionals? Eleanor Goddard from Furnish & Fettle explains why using the services of Interior Designer is more accessible than ever and a “must have” for anyone embarking on any major re-decoration projection. Whether you have just moved house or have just decided to give your current home a make over it can be extremely difficult knowing where to start and to feel confident that you will get the end result you are looking for. It’s also a time consuming and costly process, so it’s not something you want to get wrong, all of which leaves many people feeling completely overwhelmed. It’s also a daunting thought to take on the services of a professional! After all, it is your home and you don’t want to feel bullied into having something that you don’t absolutely love, just because some designer thinks it is on trend! At Furnish & Fettle, we understand all these concerns and our friendly team is here to help you with as much, or as little, input as you require. We always suggest that the best way to start the process is to book a complementary 30 minute Discovery appointment with one of our designers at your local showroom. This gives you the chance to discuss your project, but also to get to know the designer and understand how we work to see if it sounds like the right approach for you. It’s easy to know if you would like to work with us as if you don’t leave this meeting really excited about working with us then we aren’t a good fit for you! We take a very flexible approach to the services we offer but most people tend to want us to come out to their home to get a full understanding of the space, how you like to live and your tastes and preferences. Our home consultation packages start from just £250 making this a very accessible way to get the help you need to make your home look fabulous. If you are wanting more help we can provide you with a price based on the level of help you are wanting, or alternatively you can opt to work with us on an hourly fee basis. Alternatively if you are simply looking for a pair of beautiful handmade curtains or some bespoke upholstery this is something we can help you with in our showrooms by just booking an appointment.

evi Solicitors LLP is a stalwart of the Yorkshire legal community. While it has been in business since 1934, the partners and staff are not resting on their laurels. From humble beginnings as a small practice in Leeds, to a multi-office firm employing 90 people, where next for the law firm?
L
Where it all began Prominent Leeds solicitor, Jack Levi, set up J. Levi and Co in 1934. He had a small office on Park Square, and practised, among other areas of law, criminal law. Over the years, Mr Levi expanded his firm, and in the 1960s moved his eight staff into what is still Levi’s head office at 33 St Paul’s Street. Since then, further expansion has taken place meaning that Levi and Co (as they became) could take on different areas of law, and provide more legal assistance to the people of Leeds and beyond. The firm’s Senior Partner, Ian Land, and Managing Partner, Steven Newdall, both started their legal careers with Levi Solicitors over 30 years ago. However, the biggest changes have come in the 21st century. A merger with well-known property practice, Jeffrey Myers and Co in 2014 and organic growth, has meant that as well as the offices on St Paul’s Street, Levi Solicitors LLP now has offices in Wakefield, Harrogate and London and employs around 90 staff.
For you and your business While they no longer deal with criminal law issues, Levi Solicitors have expanded their services elsewhere and are proud to provide extensive legal services for people and their businesses. A busy conveyancing department helps people buy and sell houses, the firm also deals with wills and probate and immigration issues. If you find yourself in a dispute, the litigation team covers everything from medical negligence to property disputes. Headed up by Steven Newdall, Levi also has a nationally-renowned team of lawyers who can help with professional negligence claims. Steven said: “Professional negligence has been a specialism of mine for nearly 30 years. I am proud of the team we have built, and we now act for clients across the country who have lost out because a professional did not perform to the standard expected of them.” The team has successfully brought claims against professionals such as other
solicitors, accountants, builders and insurers, recovering money on behalf of their clients. The firm also has a loyal commercial client base. The commercial property team acts for major commercial landlords and social landlords, as well as small and medium-sized businesses moving premises. The dispute resolution team provides advice on everything from partnership disputes, to contractual issues and debt recovery.
Where next? It is often easy for long-standing businesses to sit back, relying on the knowledge that comes with being in business for almost 90 years. However, Levi Solicitors are constantly adapting to ensure they provide their clients with the best service. In recent years, we spend more of our lives online. As a result, Levi has adapted to provide legal services to people in their own homes, as well as face to face in the office. For people looking to buy or sell a home, clients can get a quote for Levi’s fees instantly from the website. This means that there is no need for prospective clients to wait for the team to get back to them, and you can get a quote at any time of the day or even at the weekend. The conveyancing team can also deal with almost every element of the transaction online, opening Levi up to clients from around the country. Gillian Storm, Conveyancing Manager said: “The last 18 months or so have been difficult for everyone, not least for those looking to move home.We are proud of
the way our teams have adapted to our new online systems, in order to be able to keep Yorkshire and further afield moving, even during lockdowns. Since we introduced our online services, we have seen an increase in people requesting quotes. It means that clients get their answers quickly, and the conveyancing transactions can proceed smoothly and efficiently. We will continue to work on modernising and staying at the forefront of legal technology and client service.” Elsewhere in the firm, many meetings have moved online. This has given clients quicker and more cost-effective legal advice, and is something that the firm intends to keep improving on postpandemic.
Expansion Levi Solicitors is proud of its standing as solicitors in the Leeds and Yorkshire legal community. The Wakefield office (opened in 2015) has grown from strength to strength, as has their small Harrogate office. Levi Solicitors are now pleased to announce that due to even further expansion, later this year they will be opening another office in north Leeds. The firm already provides legal services to many clients in north Leeds and beyond, and Moortown is the ideal location for future expansion. Levi intends by having offices in north Leeds, they will be able to offer a more flexible and accessible experience for our new and existing clients in and around the area. For more information about how Levi Solicitors LLP can help you, visit levisolicitors.co.uk or call 0800 988 7756.

eeds city centre has become more and more polished as big brands have moved in but it wouldn’t be the outstanding shopping destination it is today without Kirkgate Market. Now home to 200 independent businesses, an events space and a Michelin Guide-listed gastropub, Leeds Kirkgate Market is steeped in history. It became the largest indoor market in Europe when it opened in 1857. But it’s not just it size that sets it apart as a truly unique shopping experience. It was designed by the celebrated architect Joseph Paxton who was responsible for the iconic Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. It pushed technological as well as architectural boundaries by creating ‘fish row’ an innovative cooled area for fishmongers bringing fresh produce from the coast in 1895. The characteristic domed and glazed roof was also added to protect shoppers from the weather around the same time. The market has seen many changes over the years; the 1875 block shops are the oldest part of the market and were originally laid out as open streets; the 1904 hall designed by the Leeming brothers with its roof lantern is an iconic feature of the market and the city. As the entrance building was under construction the market witnessed the birth of a retail institution. Lithuanian Michael Marks set up a stall called the Penny Bazaar, with the slogan – “Don’t ask the price, it’s a penny”, which proved wildly popular. Later he took on a partner, Tom Spencer. Together the business minded duo opened a string of shops, Marks and Spencer was born and rest is history.

During the peak of World War II the market, which had become an essential hub due to the depression, suffered from bombing raids, but the market hardly closed. Ever enterprising planners saw an opportunity for further expansion adding “Butchers Row” and the open market. Fire raged through the halls decades later as traders welcomed festive shoppers on 13 December 1975 destroying two-thirds of the now famous market – doing more damage than the bombs had. Traders battled to contain the fire as it spread throughout the halls destroying businesses and livelihoods. Incredibly no one lost their lives, but traders mourned businesses that had served generations of locals. The 1904 hall remained untouched and the market’s fighting spirit saw it reopen just three days later. In 1976 and 1981 new halls were opened and Dutch developers MAB (UK) Ltd proposed to expand and 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

This included recovering the roof of the 1976 and 1981 buildings, allowing for creation of a cutting edge events space communal seating where shoppers can sit and enjoy street food and live music. Butchers Row and Fish and Game Row have been completely rebuilt in new modern facilities give it a light and spacious feel. New routes through the market
created distinct zones directing shoppers to all areas. Newly extended shopping times from 8am-5.30pm allows busy customers more flexibility and new trading schemes have also been introduced giving low risk rent free periods to new start-up businesses. A Shop and Drop initiative allows customers to buy fresh produce first thing in the morning on their way to work and store items in the custom-built cold room for collection before 5.30pm on their way home or for delivery to their homes. More hit shows for 2022
Jersey Boys
Joining blockbuster productions such as Les Misérables and Dreamgirls, 2022 will see even more hit shows come to Leeds Grand Theatre, with Cluedo, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, Jersey Boys and The Da Vinci Code all arriving in the new year. CLUEDO: 22-26 March 2022
Monroe go from strength to strength Having opened officially in February 2021, just seven months on, director Leanna Corban and partner Jordan Yorath (pictured) have recently doubled in staff numbers to four, with the addition first of all of a junior sales negotiator, Mark Pearson and recently, the recruitment of Shona Ellis, a law graduate who has joined as a senior sales negotiator. The Monroe team are fast gaining a strong reputation, especially in the Alwoodley and Roundhay areas of North Leeds, gaining market share due to a focus on top class marketing methods and providing an unrivalled customer service experience. Residential property specialist, Jordan Yorath told us: “The market in Alwoodley and surrounding areas has been blown away by our dedication to providing a service which is entirely tailored to each individual vendor and their property. With no set blueprint to our service, our growth has come six months faster than we originally forecasted.”
Unusual job The oft-asked question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” is usually answered with aspirational thoughts of becoming an astronaut, a doctor, or a lawyer. A world away from that – but perhaps no less exotic – is that of a Treasure Trail writer, whose flair, imagination and creativity transforms our surroundings into a fascinating, thoughtprovoking adventure. Jane Harvey is a full-time Trail Writer and is charged with piecing together spy missions, detective mysteries and treasure hunts for the company, which now has more than 1,200 Trails across the UK. Designed to engage children from as young as six and upwards, they really are a family affair, but work just as well for groups of friends, small parties and couples fancying a date with a difference. Love and romance LEEDS-BASED NORTHERN BALLET HAS ANNOUNCED ITS SPRING 2022 SEASON.

ith audiences returning to theatres up and down the country, Northern Ballet has picked the perfect time to announce its 2022 spring season. Next year’s tour of over 20 cities will feature two of their most popular ballets – Casanova and The Great Gatsby – as well as children’s ballet Pinocchio. The season will open on 10 March at Leeds Grand Theatre with Kenneth Tindall’s Casanova. This sumptuous ballet hasn’t been seen on the stage since 2017, although it has enjoyed success with TV broadcast on Sky Arts and on demand via Digital Theatre. Tindall’s first full-length work, Casanova takes us into the heart and mind of one of the most notorious figures in history. Follow Casanova through his romantic and scholarly endeavours as he winds his way through the scandal and excess of 18th century high society. With a cinematic score by Kerry Muzzey and opulent sets and constumes by Christopher Oram, Casanova is a visual and sensual feast. Following its Leeds opening, the ballet will tour to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, London and The Lowry, Salford between March and June. David Nixon OBE steps down from his role as artistic director of Northern Ballet at the end of this year but audiences will be able to continue enjoying his work as The Great Gatsby tours to Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Milton Keynes Theatres and Cardiff New Theatre between April and June 2022. Nothing brings back the heady days of the 1920s that F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, and David Nixon OBE’s ballet perfectly evokes this glamorous
W
and decadent era. The tragic story of Daisy and Gatsby plays out to its inevitable conclusion with Chanelinspired costumes and a score by the legendary Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE. Children’s ballet Pinocchio is choreographed by Northern Ballet Junior Soloist Gavin McCaig. This delightful production for young children re-tells the original story by Carlo Collodi, reminding us all that where there is love and honesty there is always magic. All productions are accompanied by live music performed by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. Northern Ballet is one of the UK’s leading ballet companies and the widest touring ballet company in the country. Bold and innovative in its approach, the company is prolific at creating new fulllength work with a unique blend of strong classical technique and impressive story-telling. Northern Ballet’s repertoire embraces popular culture and takes inspiration from literature, legend, opera and the classics, pushing the boundaries of what stories can be told through dance. A champion for the cultural exports of the north, Leeds-based Northern Ballet is dedicated to bringing ballet to as many people and places as possible. Northern Ballet’s company of dancers performs a combination of its full-length ballets and specially-created ballets for children at more than 40 venues annually. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? JORDAN ODU IS FILLED WITH THE JOYS OF AUTUMN.
love this time of year. Shopping for a new wardrobe, long autumnal walks, hearty new food menus at my favourite dining spots, and a few quiet ones at the local pub that turn into unplanned nights of debauchery. What’s not to love? Yes, after recharging my batteries on a much needed sunshine-filled holiday, I’m ready to embrace the joys of autumn. The students returning also sees central Leeds springing back to life, coinciding with a string of exceptional events returning. Oktoberfest is one such event I look forward to each year, and 2021 promises to be big with its debut at Globe Waterside between 7-10 October. Bring on the bratwursts, frosty

steins and of course, the oompah band and lots of drunken dancing, it’s just what the world needs right now. Another annual event that has swiftly become essential to Leeds is Light Night. Also taking place in October, the lightshows that dominate the city centre skyline only get more impressive as the years go by and the dance performances are seriously good. On the subject of town, anyone that’s not yet checked out the heavenly sourdough creations down at Pizza Punks needs to pay them a visit. With small plates such as the addictive ‘Nduja and Hot Honey Burrata’ to complement their incredible pasta and build-your-own pizzas, it’s the
ultimate place to get your carb fix, sink cocktails and soak up the sounds of their meticulously crafted playlists. Across the city, Revolucion de Cuba launched an ingenious gospel themed event

on the last Sunday of each month named Casa Del Alma (or House of Soul). The event boasts live entertainment from a seven-piece gospel choir, a bottomless brunch offer and 2-4-1 cocktails and tapas. It’s not the kind of Sunday service that will guarantee you a place in heaven, but it does promise a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We’re also looking forward to their annual big birthday bash later this month. If you like your food on the spicy side, then I can highly recommend Lupe’s Cantina on Cardigan Road. I’d been meaning to drop into this Mexican street food hot spot for ages, and it more than lived up to its hype. This hidden gem is very simple and filled with eye-catching and unusual art, and the food is some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The crispy Mexican beer-battered haddock tacos are incredible, as is the slow-cooked barbecue lamb in avocado leaves. Of course, we also sank several of their refreshing tequila-laced Mangoritas, which are quite simply lifechanging. Back in town, Granary Wharf is set to continue its transformation into one of the city’s best nightspots with the arrival of Canal Club. By day, guests can expect a boujee new dining spot focusing on globally inspired sharing menus, before it

transforms into a bar and club at night. I can’t wait for an all day bottomless party with friends. Speaking of Granary Wharf, I’ll be heading down there to Ossett Brewery’s Wharfest on Saturday 2 October, which celebrates its tenth event with live music, award winning beers, mouth-watering food and DJs playing across at Archies, Craft Asylum and The Hop. Come say hi if you’re in the area, at one of the last festivals on the year. See you all soon J Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 35

MR GERARD KELLY MBCHB MD MED FRCS IS A CONSULTANT ENT SURGEON AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY AND AT LEEDS NHS TEACHING TRUST. QUESTION My four-day-old baby is having problems breastfeeding. He does not seem to be able to latch on properly and often breaks off crying. He also has colic and isn’t gaining much weight. My midwife says he has a “tongue-tie” and suggests he would benefit from having it divided. What does this involve and will it be painful for him?
11 per cent of newborn babies. It is more common in boys than girls, and sometimes runs in families. Signs of tongue-tie in newborns include gulping, making clicking noises and breaking suction while feeding because they cannot latch on properly, causing distress for both mother and baby. If a baby has a tongue tie but can feed without problems then no treatment is necessary however it sounds like your baby is struggling and may well benefit from a tongue-tie division. In very young babies a tongue-tie division is usually carried out without anaesthetic in an out-patient clinic by a consultant surgeon. It is a relatively painless procedure as there are few nerve endings in the floor of the mouth. The baby is held by a parent or a specialist paediatric nurse. The tongue is lifted by the consultant and the frenulum is cut with sterile scissors. The tissues are then pushed apart to divide them. It takes less than a minute and there is very little blood loss, if any. The benefits of tonguetie division are usually immediate and the baby can usually breast feed very soon afterwards. Spire Leeds Hospital is the only private hospital in Leeds providing surgical services for babies from weight of 10kg upwards. For more information about tongue-tie division with Mr Kelly, contact the Private Patient Team.
ANSWER
Tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) is a condition that affects the way the tongue moves in the mouth. For some babies, their frenulum – the cord-like strip of skin joining the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter than usual making it difficult to breastfeed. Tongue-tie affects around 4-

Is it time for a new knee? CAMPBELL F MACEACHERN FROM JOINT MOTION HEALTHCARE PROVIDES HIS THOUGHTS ON KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY. nee arthritis is very common, affecting one in five adults over the age of 45. In arthritis, the smooth cartilage that lines the joint becomes progressively worn and ultimately, may wear away entirely causing severe bone on bone arthritis. The progression of arthritis varies hugely from person to person; in some the evolution of symptoms spans one to two years, in others it could be two to three decades. Symptoms of knee arthritis include pain, swelling, and stiffness. The pain often escalates with the amount of activity performed. Swelling in the joint is also common, and as the arthritis progresses, there may be a notable decrease in the range of movement of the knee. A feeling of instability in the knee is also commonly reported.Walking distance can become limited, as well as the ability to enjoy certain hobbies or sports. As symptoms progress, sleeping patterns may become disrupted and quality of life impacted. These would all be appropriate reasons for a referral to see one of the Joint Motion Healthcare Consultants. At the consulting rooms we will discuss your knee symptoms, noting particularly how they affect you on a day-to-day basis. A clinical examination is required to assess how your knee joint is functioning, and in
K
most instances, a simple X-ray examination can determine the diagnosis and severity of the arthritis.Thereafter, it may be appropriate to discuss knee replacement surgery. If your knee arthritis is not suitable for a new knee joint, our specialists will discuss other options which could help your pain and improve function. It is important to note that joint replacement surgery has the best results when performed at the right time. At the point where surgery is being considered, we will discuss the perceived benefits of a joint replacement, as well as the recognised potential risks of the operation. We will ask you to attend a pre-assessment clinic where your past medical history is reviewed and medicines you may be taking noted. This is in order that the risks of surgery are reduced to the lowest level possible. There are different types of knee replacement which can be performed. A
partial knee replacement involves replacing only one part of the knee joint, and most commonly this would be on the inner aspect of the knee. A total knee replacement involves changing all the parts of the joint and may include resurfacing the cartilage of the kneecap. If the deformity is particularly complex, we can also perform knee replacements using custom instrumentation designed from your MRI or CT scan. More recently, our surgeons at Joint Motion Healthcare, are utilising robotic knee surgery techniques. For knee replacement surgery, most patients spend a total of two or three nights in hospital. Following surgery, we aim for early rehabilitation with the physiotherapists to ensure the best outcomes from the new joint replacement. Recovery time varies depending on the exact operation performed, however full functional recovery typically occurs at six weeks to three months following surgery. We find that the knee joint continues to improve and feel stronger up to two years following surgery. Joint Motion Health surgeons, with their expertise and vast experience, use the latest surgical techniques backed by evidence-based research and work with you to provide the best possible outcome for you. If you feel you are struggling with the symptoms of knee arthritis and would like to discuss your options, we can make a prompt clinic appointment at our consulting rooms in Leeds.

Harnessing creative talents STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO FLOURISH IN THE ARTS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S. estled in 220 acres of the artistically inspiring North Yorkshire countryside, Queen Ethelburga’s (QE) is an excellent rated Collegiate (ISI 2019), welcoming students from three months to 19 years. QE has a very dedicated approach to the Arts across the Collegiate, believing that they are a key ingredient to healthy, happy and creative students. They provide their students with the expertise, the environment and passion to enable students to develop and succeed. QE’s rural location provided the perfect back drop for creative Year 12 student Leon to indulge his passion for photography. He commits every weekend to exploring the medium of photography in extraordinary depth expending the curriculum beyond his basic studies. Using their historic and traditional Armorial Hall, built by renowned York architect Walter Henry Brierley, Leon took a rare quiet moment to set up a photoshoot of fellow student Valentina. He took inspiration from photographer Tim Walker and elements of Alexander

McQueen can be seen in the styling. This creative pursuit took place as part of the Queen’s Academy, a weekend extra-curricular provision, allowing students to realise and extend their ideas and creative passion. Head of Creative Arts, Helen Woodcock, established this provision for students, supported by their drive to express creativity in all opportunities. Helen said: “The Queens Academy is very much student led. Our excellent facilities are very much in demand by both our day and boarding students. This
allows them the time and space to be able to work on their own projects both independently, and with staff support. We have also been able to offer an amazing set of weekend workshops as well as master classes and talks from industry professionals. “It was great to see Leon use this as a creative opportunity to produce such inspirational work.” The Creative Arts Department at QE combines the skills and resources of the Art and Design department and the Design and Technology department to offer a fantastic learning experience and a range of subject routes that go beyond the traditional subject choices. Facilities include dedicated spaces for fashion, fine arts, 3D design and design technology workshops as well as in photography, a dedicated studio space and darkroom. All-round academic excellence DISCOVER HOW WOODHOUSE GROVE OFFERS PUPILS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE. hot topic of discussion within the Independent School arena is whether those schools known to provide an “all-round” education, with greater emphasis on co-curricular activities and opportunities beyond the classroom, can compete with the best in terms of academic performance. Does one preclude the other? Woodhouse Grove, based in Apperley Bridge, demonstrates that it does not. The Grove is well known for its ability to produce well-rounded, go-getting, entrepreneurial young people. The school’s sporting heritage and success is firmly established – and its performing arts offering second to none.To be a “Grovian” is something that benefits pupils long after they leave the school gates for the last time. The school’s alumni – or “Old Grovians” – form a close, altruistic network across a huge variety of fields – from the City to the West End. It is, perhaps, this diversity and outward thinking beyond the classroom that has led some to disregard Woodhouse Grove as a serious contender within the classroom walls. The school’s public examination results indicate something entirely different: At GCSE level, 45 per cent of all pupils achieved at least 6 A* or A Grades (7 or above). And at A Level, the average UCAS point score per candidate was 132 (the equivalent of between ABB and AAB), the school achieved a 99 per cent pass rate (A*-E) with a 44 per cent A*-A rate, 69 per cent per cent A*-B and 87 per cent A*-C. So, how does a school that, particularly in the local independent sector, has an exceptionally broad entry into the Sixth Form, also achieve such high end results? At Woodhouse Grove, the answer lies in personalisation. Sixth form class sizes are
A

small – often as small as just 8 students. The school keeps it this way to allow the timetable to be built around student choices; Grove pupils are never shoehorned into limited subject combinations. The school prides itself on its flexibility and an educational offering that is constantly changing depending on student needs and aptitudes. This personalisation filters through to curriculum planning lower down the school and enables Grove students to take GCSEs and A levels early, or study additional courses. Ed Wright, Deputy Head Academic describes Woodhouse Grove’s academic ethos: “Key to our academic success is the fact that we are not a ‘them and us’ school. We see learning and academic
success as a collaborative effort between the teacher and student. “Every member of staff works incredibly hard to get to know their individual students – to understand their drives and motivations, how they learn and what they want to achieve. Our teaching is person driven – not data driven. Instead, we aim to be data conscious in a studentfocused way; utilising the baseline data available to us when pupils arrive in Year 7 to further tailor their learning experience, whether this means additional stretch and challenge or more in depth focus on specific skills.” Based on the exam results achieved, this approach clearly works. But perhaps, more telling are the words of the students themselves. Lily,Year 10 has been at the Grove for a year: “At the Grove, the teacher notices you. At my old school, the teachers didn’t know me. Here, they know me and what I’m good at. They talk to me like I’m a young person and they work with me, like they want to help.” An “all-round” education and academic excellence? Woodhouse Grove is proof that both can exist under one school roof. To find out more about Woodhouse Grove, visit the school’s website: www.woodhousegrove.co.uk where you can sign up for the next school Open Morning on Saturday 13 November.

Meet the chef A SELECTION OF LOCAL COOKS SHARE THEIR KITCHEN SECRETS, CULINARY LOVES AND FOODIE INFLUENCES.
Dan Shotton Yorebridge House Dan has worked at Yorebridge House in Bainbridge, North Yorkshire for eight years. The restaurant is a big supporter of local suppliers and uses seasonal produce to create exciting five-course a la carte menus, which allow for customers to choose their favourite dishes as well as allowing the kitchen to delight and surprise them with extra courses such as canapes, amuse bouche and pre-dessert for a fine dining experience. Dan’s favourite winter warming dish is jam roly poly – “I only have it once a year if that, it reminds me of being a child and the festive period,” he said. As well as the local produce, Dan finds inspiration from the seasons, as he explains: “The seasons inspire my menu writing, for example in the spring the kitchen team forage wild garlic. We also grow our own fruit and vegetables at the kitchen garden too. In spite of our passion to use local produce I am classically trained, working with the Roux brothers which obviously influences my style of cooking.” To find out more, visit www.yorebridgehouse.co.uk
Paul Cunliffe Alexander’s of Skipton Alexander’s brings modern all day dining to Skipton with an all-encompassing menu serving a variety of dishes, from morning brunch and exquisite afternoon tea, to evening dining and and an extensive wine and cocktail selection. It’s all overseen by executive chef Paul Cunliffe, who has been at Alexander’s for two years. “Our menu is bursting with modern, well-executed food that’s packed with flavour and looks sensational,” he said. As we move into the autumn/winter months, Paul likes nothing more than a serving of stew and dumplings, which he describes as “hearty, traditional and delicious. It’s the ultimate comfort dish when the rain is pouring outside and the fire is roaring”. Paul takes his inspiration from his surroundings: “Yorkshire is a pretty inspirational place,” he commented. “It enables us to source incredible fresh, local produce for our menus.” To find out more, visit https://alexanders-skipton.com/ 54 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Mark Bennett DoubleTree by Hilton Harrogate Majestic Hotel & Spa Admittedly getting his strong work ethic from his parents, Mark and his team work tirelessly to deliver excellent dishes in the heart of Harrogate. Carters Champagne Bar and Grill is a versatile and stunningly decorated restaurant available for breakfast, corporate lunches and evening dining experiences. The bar area is perfect for hosting drinks receptions and showcasing live entertainment. “Harrogate has a fantastic food supply network from locations including the Yorkshire Dales and the coastal towns on the East Coast,” said Mark. “Carters boasts an à la carte menu sourced from local seasonal produce. From rare breed meat, aged in our very own ageing cabinet and then cooked in our Josper Grill, to Pepper Smoked Mackerel and hearty Mac ‘n’ Cheese all paired with carefully selected champagnes, wines and cocktails.” Choosing his favourite winter warming dish, Mark added: “A rich Fisherman’s pie with a glass of lightly oaked Chardonnay is my idea of heaven. Cooking and eating seafood always reminds me of home life by the coast. Taking the fishing boats out early in the morning, to get the best catch, was where my passion for food began.” To find out more, visit experiencethemajestic.com
Flavien Chollet Weetons Food Hall Flavien only joined Weetons in August but has quickly made his mark. Weetons, which is located on West Park in Harrogate, has a diverse offering of food, from deli dishes such as homemade scotch eggs, sausage rolls or fresh pastries to their ‘chef to go’ section, where try ready-made meals in house like a luxury fish pie or a chicken pasanda. The food hall also has a luxury dining brochure and you can, of course, dine in the restaurant and enjoy a lovely burger made by our butchery team or have a warm French onion soup. They have recently introduced afternoon teas too. Flavien’s favourite winter warming dish is confit duck leg. “It was one of the first dishes my grandma taught me and coincidently one of the tasks I had to achieve for my chef ’s degree,” he said. “It’s a warm dish that goes well with a lovely bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and to be enjoyed with friends and family.” The French chef was mentored by ‘un grand chef ’ Joël Robuchon and is inspired to push Weetons even further. Visit www.weetons.com for more information.
Terry Davies The Tickled Trout Terry has been based at The Tickled Trout in Bilton in Ainsty for two years, running the restaurant, which, perhaps unsurprisingly, specialises in fish dishes. “We are big on fish and anything local,” said Terry. “I also forage my own mushrooms, elderberries, wild garlic and damsons.” Terry’s favourite winter warmer dish is fresh turbot with brown shrimps and wood ear mushrooms. “The delicate flavour of the turbot, with the sweetness of the shrimps and the woody mushrooms... all the flavours complement each other and the mushrooms give the dish an autumnal warmth. It’s just fantastic with a gentle oaked Chardonnay,” he reasons. When it comes to inspiration, Terry looks to the land of the rising sun – he’s heading over to Japan in January to tour the street markets. Who knows what will turn up on The Tickled Trout menu when he gets back… See www.tickledtrout.co.uk to find out more. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 55

buildings almost five years ago, each with their own unique character and style, they couldn’t help but fall in love with them. The Hardys had already refurbished two homes from the ground up before they began work on the cottages, so they knew exactly the challenge they’d be taking on. “We spent months planning and carrying out the new works, new roofs, new walls, rewiring, plumbing, designer glass and lighting,” said Marie-Therese. “We took inspiration from hospitality we’d experienced all over the world and sought to make our cottages the perfect home from home. “At Artists’ Cottages we express a fresh sense of hospitality, using bright Mediterranean colours to create a sense of joy, life and exuberance, and calm, natural shades to breathe tranquillity and to soothe you.” Each cottage has been individually designed, with bespoke soft furnishings and even original glasswork turning the cottages into works of art in their own right. On top of this, each cottage is home to the work of talented local artists, and everything is for sale. So if you find yourself falling in love with what’s on the walls, you can take a little bit of Harrogate home with you. The Hardys aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible, and they’ve a long list of complimentary optional extras for you to take advantage of during your break. Whether you need some extra chairs for a dinner party, or want to sit back and relax by the fire with a good book, a cup of tea and some classic vinyl before a great night’s sleep in their comfortable beds, they’ve thought of it all and are happy to do what they can for their guests. They will personally meet and greet you when you arrive for the ultimate warm welcome. “Our aim is to give you a place to relax, unwind and leave the world behind,” said Marie-Therese. “Each property tells a different story. We have combined antique with modern to give both a timeless quality and a sense of time passing, a true feeling of a family home with all the 21st century comforts. “The common threads are the superbly-equipped kitchens, comfortable sofas, log-burning stoves, great beds and super-fast wifi.” The properties include the twobedroomed Artists’ House, which sleeps four; Artists’ Loft has one double bedroom; Artists’ Cottage can sleep four in two large double bedrooms; Artists’ Corner also has two bedrooms for four,
as does Artists’ Place. Many are petfriendly and there is free parking at every property. “When we set up the business in 2017 we had several goals in mind,” explained Marie-Therese. “These included creating something special that brings these buildings alive for present and future generations, to employ local people and businesses, and give a real sense of continuity which comes from a family home.” “From our guests’ comments it appears we have achieved turning pretty stone cottages into something really special.
Our cottages have been enjoyed by a wide-range of people, from business travellers to brides and holiday makers to those enjoying a romantic break.” Combining 21st century luxury with 19th century style – and a great location – a stay at Artists’ Cottages is a home from home and perfect for all types of stays. A masterpiece in relaxed, modern elegance THE LOVELINESS OF LINTHWAITE – LEEU LUXURY IN THE LAKE DISTRICT.
art of the eclectic Leeu Collection, established first in South Africa, with the iconic Le Quartier Francais Hotel, Linthwaite House is perfectly located for exploring Lake Windermere and the pretty parks, towns and landmarks that are perched on the edge of this world-famous waterway. At more than ten miles long and one mile wide, Lake Windermere is the largest lake in the national park. Linthwaite is an Edwardian house of whitewashed render and black-and-white timbered gables, and has been transformed into a masterpiece in relaxed, modern elegance. Linen sofas, cosy armchairs and glossy tables with hefty art books are carefully scattered on rug-covered wood floors. Grown-up colours of pale grey, milkywhites, tans and bottle-greens are jazzed up with splashes of leopard print or tribal patterns.Views through picture windows to the lake and fells are soporific. Equally entrancing are the modern artworks – some of them are from the owner’s private collection. The terrace is the Piece de Resistance... offering unparalleled views of Lake Windermere and the rolling landscape across manicured lawns and

skilfully maintained grounds. This is the perfect spot to watch the sun setting over a bespoke cocktail… or perhaps a light lunch from the extensive bar menu, or perhaps the delicious Linthwaite Afternoon Tea. While the weather isn’t always great in October, it’s definitely the best time to visit as summer crowds start to dissipate, and the season turns to the copper tones and earthy colours of autumn. It’s the perfect time to follow the trail around the grounds and spot the playful art installations and whimsical sculptures (inspired by the local wildlife and South Africa’s nature), weave along the woodland paths through the rich, red leaves, and wander down the slate-lined
tracks up to the hotel’s own special viewpoint, Lake Suites and the picturesque Tarn. With their plain walls, discreet striped carpets, Shaker-style painted furniture and thick linen headboards and curtains, the guest rooms exude quality: stiff linen curtains, fat cushions, super-thick beds. Bathrooms are huge and airy in limestone and glass, with Molton Brown goodies in eco-friendly pots. For real peace and privacy, there are six suites in chalet-style buildings set higher up in the grounds, a five-minute walk (or quick buggy ride) from the main hotel. With floor-to-ceiling windows, these are sleek and Scandi-style with wood floors and modern furnishings.
