and around this area where many of the most famous spots in Venice can be found, so it’s easy to spend a morning meandering about this locality. The square as it stands today dates back to the 1100s – simply wander around the archways and impressive architecture to soak it all up. St Mark’s Basilica is one building that dominates St Mark’s Square – the most famous of the city’s churches known for its glorious Italo-Byzantine architecture. It has been the city’s cathedral since 1807 and was originally the chapel of the Doge of Venice – the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic. Foodies are spoilt for choice with a cacophony of Michelin-star restaurants, or, you may prefer one of the renowned local eateries. It’s impossible to visit Venice without
taking to the canals, so round off your trip to Venice with a gondola ride. As well as crossing all the famous waterways – including the Grand Canal – you’ll also be taken along some of the lesser travelled routes, where you can soak up traditional Venetian architecture and watch daily life at its best in the city. TRAVEL
Lake Garda at sunset
You will spend three nights in the centrally located four-star Santa Chiara hotel, right on Piazzale Roma and overlooking the Grand Canal. After exploring this remarkable city head to the largest and most eastern of the Italian Lakes, Lake Garda. It features fjord-like cliffs in the north, and gentle hills covered with vineyards, olive groves and lemon orchards in the south. Holidays to Lake Garda undoubtedly offer truly exceptional beauty. Towering mountains descend to meet atmospheric shorelines in this Italian Lake District; aptly named because of the many literary connections to the romantic poets. It boasts a wonderful climate with mild summers and mellow winters, and owing to its clear clean waters, is a particular favourite for swimming, windsurfing and sailing; something for everyone on Lake Garda holidays. Picturesque towns and lakeside villages can easily be discovered during lake cruises and scenic drives around this delightful area and, during the summer months, opera lovers will delight in a trip to Verona’s open air amphitheatre.
Hotel Savoy Palace
With charming towns and villages on both the eastern and western shore of the lake there are plenty of places to visit on holidays to Lake Garda. The sophisticated resort of Salò offers wonderful places to dine with bars, cafés and restaurants specialising in the regions local dishes. Whether you are enjoying a drink in a lakeside bar, ambling through the town or taking a refreshing swim, holidays in Lake Garda are perfect for those looking to relaxing and unwind in one of Italy’s most stunning landscapes. The area is renowned for delicate olive oil, lemons, and Bardolino, Soave and Valpolicella wines. Fish straight from the lake features high on the menu, and for dessert Italian ice cream is a must. Delightful alfresco cafés, bars and restaurants can be found in abundance on both the western and eastern shores of the lake. With such a variety of choices all boasting fantastic dishes, you can be assured that on your Lake Garda holidays you will always have the finest dining experience. You will spend six nights in the charming town of Gardone Riviera at
the four-star Hotel Savoy Palace. This hotel has played host to famous 20th century dignitaries such as Winston Churchill, and will take you back to the romantic days of the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau. Its interior is adorned with marble, stone and precious woods and most rooms have fabulous views of Lake Garda. Lush green gardens envelop the hotel, and the pool is set in the lawn where guests may rest and enjoy a poolside lunch or light snack. The Angelo Landi restaurant offers al fresco candlelit dinners on warm summer evenings. Dedicated to the local poet and playwright Gabriele d’Annunzio, who frequently stayed at the hotel and whose work was inspired by his many mistresses, the Muse’s Bar provides a delightfully comfortable atmosphere for an aperitif or after dinner drink. Ghostly goings-on GETTING READY TO CHILL AUDIENCES IN LEEDS ARE JOE McFADDEN AND RITA SIMONS, WHO WILL BE STARRING THE WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF THE HOUSE ON COLD HILL.
Rita Simons and Joe McFadden in The House on Cold Hill Image © Helen Maybanks
INTERVIEW
odern-day ghostly thriller, The House on Cold Hill, is based on author Peter James’s own reallife experience in a haunted house, and takes centre stage at Leeds’ Grand Theatre and Opera House this month. Joe McFadden and Rita Simons play the Harcourts, who move into the house of their dreams that has stood empty for 40 years, only to find that it quickly turns into the stuff of nightmares. Support comes from Charlie Clements and Persephone Swales-Dawson. The production sees Peter James reunited with two-time Oliviernominated theatre producer Joshua Andrews, the Olivier award-winning director Ian Talbot and award-winning writer Shaun McKenna. We spoke to leading stars, Joe and Rita, to find out more.
M
What drew you to The House On Cold Hill?
Joe: It’s really well written with interesting characters. There’s some real tension in there and no-one in the play is what they first seem to be, which makes it so intriguing. It keeps you guessing right up until the last minute. Rita: I’m a massive fan of mysteries and thrillers. When I was a kid and probably way too young I loved watching really scary films and I’m into anything mysterious or scary, which this certainly is in places. I couldn’t put the script down when I first read it – I was gripped! How would you sum up your respective characters?
Joe: On the face of it Ollie seems to have everything going for him. He’s just sold his advertising company, he has this great family and it seems like he has this brilliant life, then that slowly gets unravelled throughout the course of the evening. Rita: Caro is a very family-oriented wife and mother but, as a solicitor, someone who is also very driven. I think she wears the trousers in the marriage but [laughs] I think all women wear the trousers and are quietly in control. She’s a smart cookie but she loves her family. Are there ways in which you can relate to them?
Joe: I’m quite like Ollie in how he
doesn’t believe in the supernatural or the occult, although I’m probably more open to it than he is. He very much has decided that all that stuff doesn’t exist. Rita: I am a wife and a mother and I do love my kids but [laughs] I don’t have a Barbour jacket, although interestingly I do come from a family of solicitors – my mum, my brother, my grandfather. But I’m the odd bod of the family who wanted to become an actress. What particular challenges does the play present to you as actors?
Joe: I suppose the big challenge is creating tension in the theatre – getting the audience to care and scaring them, getting them wound up in the drama so they care about who we are and what happens to us. Rita: I’m used to playing extremes. With the last role I did on stage, Legally Blonde, my character was a way-extreme, New York hairdresser and my TV roles have always been really gritty and I’m often in hysterics or someone’s died. So what’s quite difficult for me is that in the beginning when we’re setting up the tension it’s quite even-tempered and that’s a hard place to place yourself as an actress, not having hysterics of any sort. It’s always easier to play one extreme or the other. What do you feel makes Peter James unique amongst thriller writers?
Joe: He’s so good at creating tension and suspense. I remember reading Dead Simple and being completely horrified by it, with this character being buried alive. I had to stop reading it a few times because it was so upsetting. It’s brilliant that Peter has such a loyal audience. This is the fourth time one of his books has been turned into a play and there’s a real hunger for it. Rita: Like all of Peter’s books The House On Cold Hill is such a page-turner. That’s why they make such good stage adaptations. You get that sense of tension exactly as if you were turning a page and also because it’s modern-day people can really relate to his stories. Joe: So many ghost stories are oldfashioned and often set in, like, Victorian times but this one is bang up-to-date. It’s got all the tech and Alexa, Facebook and
all that. Alexa in it is really weird and says all this strange stuff, but then I find it weird anyway that people would have something in their house that’s always listening. Why do you think audiences are drawn to theatrical spine-tinglers?
Joe: It’s the immediacy, isn’t it? You can see a story unrolling in front of you and you can’t press ‘Pause’ or get distracted by stuff. You’re right there, a captive audience, so when something is scary in the theatre it’s proper scary. I did a ghost story a few years ago, an Alan Ayckbourn play called Haunting Julia, and sensing that tension in an audience makes you feel really powerful as an actor knowing that you’re scaring the bejesus out of people. Rita: I think audiences love to be on the edge of their seat and sometimes jumping out of it in a theatre full of other people feeling that same tension. This is my first thriller so it’s all new for me. In fact, it’s my first stage play as opposed to a musical so [laughs] it’s scary for different reasons. Do you scare easily yourselves?
Joe: I do, yes. I do Shocktoberfest, going to places like Thorpe Park and Alton Towers for all the scary rides. And I love watching horror films. The films in the Insidious series are particularly terrifying. Rita: I don’t scare at all, probably because I grew up watching horror films and am immune to them now. The only film that’s ever scared me as an adult is The Exorcist, especially because I watched the making-of documentary beforehand and so much weird stuff went on set. What are the roles people most recognise you for?
Rita: People shout ‘Roxy” at me about 40 times a day, but then I was on EastEnders for ten years. I’m just used to it now. Joe: Mine is Holby City mainly and also Heartbeat because they’re both on in the afternoons at the moment. The House on Cold Hill is at The Grand from 29 April to 4 May. Let the sharp Atlantic winds turn to gales of hysterical laughter as our colourful characters become tantalisingly tangled in a Stoppardian string of absurd events, as they feverishly try to rehearse a show whilst en route to New York. All aboard for the long-awaited return of Rough Crossing, from Academy, Tony® and Olivier Award-winning writer Tom Stoppard. 9-20 April / Leeds Grand Theatre www.leedsgrandtheatre.com From the factory floor of Northampton to the catwalks of Milan, Kinky Boots struts into Leeds Grand Theatre. With songs by Cyndi Lauper, and inspired by true events, this dazzling musical celebrates a joyous story of Brit grit to high-heeled hit and is the winner of every major Best Musical award.
Audiences will be transported back to the 19th century as the infamous Phileas Fogg embarks upon an extraordinary journey across four continents, causing mayhem along the way in this exhilarating production packed with surprises, props and laughs. It features new original music by award-winning musician Dom Coyote.
4 April Leeds Town Hall, Leeds, LS1 3AD www.leedstownhall.co.uk Back on the road again, Tommy Tiernan rants and raves, he dances and acts. He tries to be very silly and very serious at the same time. He mixes a love of comic rebellion and a refusal to be conscripted into a rational view of the world with a deep love for talking and the poetry of everyday speech. Using high theatricality and lots of sweary language, this is a fast paced and exuberant celebration of everything that’s wild, wrong and wonderful about being alive right here, right now.
Seann Walsh 9 April Leeds City Varieties Music Hall, Swan Street, Leeds, LS1 6LW www.cityvarieties.co.uk This disheveled, fiery, animated, fiercely idle, millennial man child is one of best live comedians to have come out of the UK. Seann made his acting debut starring in Comedy Central’s sitcom Big Bad World, this was quickly followed up by the lead role in Monks (BBC One), he utilised his physical comedic abilities in Sky’s silent comedy, Three Kinds of Stupid, which led to him producing, writing and starring in his own silent comedy webseries The Drunk. He also wrote and starred in his own Sky short for Sky Arts and is now co-starring in Jack Dee’s brand-new sitcom Bad Move (ITV1).
West Side Story
Julian Clary: Born to Mince
23-27 April Leeds Grand Theatre www.leedsgrandtheatre.com From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Jerome Robbins’ iconic production transports Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to 1950s New York City where two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs: the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
12 & 13 April Leeds City Varieties Music Hall, Swan Street, Leeds, LS1 6LW www.cityvarieties.co.uk In this outrageously camp new show, (that he was going to call Bed Knobs and Knee Pads but was advised might not sell too well in Harrogate), renowned homosexual Julian Clary will bare his soul as never before in the interests of light entertainment. He’ll murder some well known songs along the way, no doubt, read you a sneak preview from his next memoir A Night At the Lubricant and make withering remarks about punters foolish enough to sit in the front row. You know the kind of thing. It’s the only life he knows.

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? PINK LADIES, EASTER BUNNIES AND MULBERRY: A MONTH IN THE LIFE OF MAVEER SINGH-PANGU.
ith beer garden weather and all the bank holidays to look forward to, I’m heading into April with a big smile on my face. Not that March wasn’t incredible, on the contrary in fact. I’ve just returned from Dubai where I attended what has to go down as one of the best weddings I’ve ever been to. My friends Priyanca and Anand, along with their families, really blew everyone away with three days of amazingness and a party fit for the A-list! We enjoyed dinner by the fountains for
W

the wedding reception finale, underneath the iconic Burj Khalifa, before dancing into the small hours to the sounds of the one and only Craig David on the decks. I made so many friends, including my new bestie Seema from The Housewives of Cheshire. I’m already planning a trip across the Pennines for a Dubai reunion with my newfound girlfriends, so watch out Cheshire – I’m coming for you! Speaking of ladies, last month saw us debut our Pink Ladies pet project, which somehow went by without a hitch to
become a sell-out success. Held at the lovely Issho in time for International Women’s Day, the event was a celebration of inspirational women in business, and included some empowering presentations from the likes of Capital FM’s JoJo. Keep your eyes peeled for news on our forthcoming second event ladies. This will take place in May at the fabulous Harvey Nichols. The Pink Gorilla launch parties came thick and fast in March, and began with the highly-anticipated Yard & Coop. I
missed this due to my holiday, but word on the street is that it was a finger-licking good event, filled with buttermilk fried chicken, Prosecco, cocktails and beer. If you’ve not yet been, then I urge you to try it. My go-to dish at the moment is the Coop Kebab, which tastes even better when doused in their homemade Dr Pepper BBQ sauce. If you were lucky enough to join us at the end of March for the Revolucion de Cuba relaunch party, then you’ll know first-hand what a truly magical night it was. Their stunning refurb includes a new and improved entertainment area and vintage-styled chandeliers that really add
to their shabby chic look. The party itself managed to recreate the spirit and energy of a Cuban carnival, which required an endless bevvy of beautiful dancers and an unspeakable amount of rum! If you’ve not yet made plans for Easter weekend, then you must join me at Oracle on Saturday 20 April for my Pangu Parties Easter Bunny event. Now an annual staple of the Leeds social scene, you can expect bubbles galore, with added chocolate and of course, my very own bunny girls (and boys!). Essentially, I’m like Leeds’ answer to Hugh Hefner for one night only, only much hotter and ten times more charming. I’m also looking forward to working with Blue Sakura in the Arena Quarter, who have been causing ripples across the city’s dining scene with their next-level Japanese sushi
Blue Sakura
and grill menu. Do try the Torched Tuna Nigri, it really is to die for. That just about wraps it up for this month. I’ve got a super-exciting event to plan for at Mulberry in Manchester this month, so do follow me on social for updates and I’ll hopefully see you at a party soon. Mav x @maveer123

explores Black Britishness in Leeds and beyond in a truly unique style. Sport 2.0, meanwhile, sees Olympic skeleton racer Amy Williams MBE, among others, taking a look at how technology has changed the face of sport forever. Whether it’s improved materials giving athletes that millisecond edge, or new innovations in media coverage, technology is more important than ever. It will be fascinating to see just how much things are changing. Even the world of cosmetics is seeing innovations with truly powerful potential. Facing Brave is guaranteed to be a captivating discussion as Dr Almas Ahmed discusses her creation, the world’s first acid-proof make up. It’s a
story of how anyone can transform our world by taking back power from those who seek to use it for hatred. But while all these technological advances are happening, it can become hard to know how to respond to them. Sometimes it helps to go back to the question that started it all: what does it mean to be human? Leeds International Festival is devoting a whole day to this question, exploring the power of mindfulness, how best to navigate a crazy world and what our ancestors could teach us. For those who want to experience the creative spirit that Leeds has to offer, look out for the OFF programme events. Whether it’s punk poet John Cooper Clarke taking you on a
hilarious trip into the heart of counterculture, or an exploration of the female experience through dance, these are events that will test you and excite you. It’s sure to be unpredictable and a lot of fun. No matter what you’re interested in, Leeds International Festival is all about feeding your curiosity. Enter with an open mind and you’re sure to discover new ideas, be dazzled by something unique or just experience something you might never have though you would. You never know, you could be inspired to do something that could shape the future too.

Families are invited to hop on down to RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate this Easter for a great garden adventure with The Rhyming Rabbit. The RHS has teamed up with publisher Macmillan Children’s Books for an exciting programme of family fun during the Easter Holidays, based on The Rhyming Rabbit, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Lydia Monks. Each day, families can enjoy The Rhyming Rabbit Hop About Trail which will take them around the garden and through a giant burrow, meeting the Rhyming Rabbit’s animal friends along the way (starts 30 March). If a hop around the garden leaves children feeling inspired, they can enter a competition to draw their favourite characters or illustrate their own garden adventure, with entries judged by award-winning illustrator, Lydia Monks. Running at the same time over the Easter weekend visitors can meet the Easter Bunny himself and from 30 March – 29 April families can also ‘guestimate’ the location of a giant golden carrot which has been buried in the garden, for a chance to win a giant £495 Bettys Easter Egg! www.rhs.org.uk/harlowcarr

Family Law THE BREAKDOWN OF A RELATIONSHIP IS A CHALLENGING TIME FOR FAMILIES. BELOW IS JUST SOME OF THE SCENARIOS WE FREQUENTLY SEE IN THE FAMILY TEAM AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH. Q. I have been married for 20 years. My husband has worked full time throughout our marriage. I have stayed at home to care for our three children. My husband told me that I won’t get anything if we divorce. Is he right?
A. When a couple divorce, and a court is asked to decide how the finances are split, it will consider all of the circumstances with first consideration being given to the welfare of children under the age of 18. The court will try to ensure that both parties can be housed but priority may be given to housing you and the children who live with you. The court has wide ranging powers including ordering the sale of your home, the transfer of your home to one of you, payment of cash lump sums, periodical payments (“maintenance”) and sharing pensions. In certain circumstances the court may make an order that your home can’t be sold until your youngest child is 18 years old. Your contribution in caring
for the children is usually seen as equal to your husband’s contribution of working and bringing in money. Q. My ex has told me she is going to take our two young children on holiday to America. She won’t give me any details of their holiday. I am worried in case an emergency arises. She says I can’t stop her taking the children.
A. If you don’t agree with your ex taking the children on holiday or without sharing details of the trip, you can apply to the family court for an order that your ex provides the information or is prevented from taking the children abroad (a Prohibited Steps Order). Your ex may apply to the court for permission to take the children on holiday (a Specific Issue Order). The court will decide whether or not to grant the applications, with consideration being given to what is in the children’s best interests.
David Lister
Q. My husband and I are getting divorced and we have sorted out the finances ourselves. We typed up our agreement and signed it. Is this enforceable?
A. The agreement you have made will not be binding and enforceable unless it is made into a Court Order. You should apply to Court for an order made by consent .The court has the power to decide whether to make your agreement set out in the order binding. It will usually do so if it considers that the agreement is fair and reasonable. A solicitor can assist you with the preparation of a Consent order.

nights and thought-provoking meals and workshops highlighting the issue of food sustainability and zero waste. It’s hard to pick out any favourites out of the massive range of events, but some of the most diverse, weird and wacky include Tandem’s Secret Supper, Grumpy’s Den Building and Bloody Big Brunch. Harry Potter fans will rejoice as they dust off their brooms and head over to Tandem’s ‘Secret Supper’, a Muggle Meal featuring British foodie favourites served up with a wizarding twist, held at Hogsmeade’s favourite inn, the Three
Broomsticks. Dressing up is strongly encouraged, so wise up on your wand work and get down to Chapel Town’s Tandem. Family fun is on the cards down at Grumpy’s in Farsley, as the venue team up with the Scrap Creative Reuse Project to host a day of exuberant den building – with all ingredients reclaimed and reconsidered, provided to highlight the ‘reduce reuse recycle’ mentality. Think industrial cardboard tubes and hoards of fun bits and pieces which will be the perfect building supplies for building your perfect den… be that a

fairytale castle, or a boat… or even a pizza restaurant! They will be providing their own fabulous wood fired pizzas too, of course, and a bar-full of craft beers and gins mean mums and dads can while away the day in the sun (hopefully!) whilst the kids put the finishing touches to their masterpieces. Support period poverty around Leeds with a cocktail in hand at The Bloody Big Brunch, a novel idea whose brazen concept is simple – pay for your brunch Bloody Mary (or Virgin Mary, if you prefer a little less vodka!) with period products. Exciting events are too plentiful to name. But included in the line-up is a dinner beneath the canopy of ancient forest land, a fabulous expert-guided forage and cook up, learning the art of cake decoration, understanding how to make your own seitan, a massive festivalwithin-a-festival of food and samba magic at Kirkstall Abbey. There will also be a plethora of innovative collaborations between some of Leeds’ favourite indie stars (keep your eyes peeled for Laynes, Wayward Wines, Bundobust, and Prashad, to name but a few) and supper clubs, exclusive LIF one-off brews and products, workshops, pairing nights and food expertise aplenty. And that’s only to mention a tiny handful of the great line-up of events. Phew! Support Leeds’ independent food and drink sector, and enjoy some amazing foodie experiences, through 9-27 May. EATING OUT
Beacon for foodies IS THE BLACK BULL BACK TO ITS BEST? WE SENT ALLAN BOUGHEY TO FIND OUT. here was a time not so long ago, when, if you fancied a good meal in the central slab of North Yorkshire between the Moors and the Dales, there were just a couple of top draw options – the Cleveland Tontine near Northallerton and the Black Bull at Moulton. Both were quirky, slightly bohemian, and based on a solidly Gallic posh brasserie cuisine. You knew you would be treated to a beautifully cooked Dover sole or char-grilled steak and a decent glass of wine. You knew the service would be on point and the atmosphere convivial and fun. You knew a good time was guaranteed. The Black Bull, a transformed village boozer, was a gastropub before the term had even been coined. Its oak-paneled oyster bar seemed drenched in Parisian sophistication, while the old railway carriage, embedded into the rear of the building, suggested the glamour of the Orient Express. An odd mix maybe, but it was a unique experience and folk flocked from miles around. The 1990s food revolution changed the landscape, spawning a slew of more than decent eateries and attracting celebrity chefs and Michelin stars; in contrast, the stars of the Tontine and Black Bull began to dim a little. But both are back in the limelight. Owned by the same company, Provenance Inns, who run seven of Yorkshire’s finest pubs and hotels, they are shining brightly once more. The Black Bull, situated in a pretty village a few miles south of Scotch Corner, has been transformed. The railway carriage (an original 1932 Pullman) has made tracks and been replaced by a huge single-storey extension, its glass walls flooding the once gloomy interior of the 17th century coaching inn with light; lots of it. This cool, chic space serves as the restaurant. The original pub area retains the cosy vibe of the oyster bar and, reassuringly, still serves as the village local where you
T
can just pop in for a pint and natter. To top things off, there’s a lovely, sheltered terrace area that’s perfect on a summer’s evening. Quirky and bohemian has become ultra-modern and urbane, yet that nod to times past and cherished traditions, is palpable. It’s a setting that is up there with the best the county has to offer. It’s grand then, that the food matches the location. Head chef Tom Maine does a fine job of conserving the Black Bull’s seafoodbased culinary heritage while promoting a light-fingered, modern British bistro approach. Fish always forms a sizeable chunk of the main menu while there are also seafood-based tasting menus – and the Sunday lunch is gaining a firm following. Our meal began with some lovely, fluffy Cotherstone cheese and onion bread served with a homemade lavender oil and balsamic dip – bright, perky flavours that posed a real statement of intent. Feeling slightly nostalgic, we moved on with six Lindisfarne oysters (£12.50) – three beautifully fleshy and creamy natural ones, and three baked Kilpatrick style with bacon, cheese, and Worcestershire sauce. Cooked oysters can present a rather sad rendering of their former selves; these had become almost souffléd, plumping up their flesh and emphasising their aquatic essence. They went particularly well with a glass of the Macon Uchizy (£7.90 for 175ml). Though tempted to share a seafood platter (£13.95 for a starter portion), we opted for a plate of baked queenie scallops (£9.95), served in two large shells and doused in a winey, cheesy balm, and the seafood pancake (£7.95), a generous bowl of punchy fish and shellfish in a Mornay sauce. Each was excellent. Main courses both came from the ever-changing specials board; delicate and finely flavoured monkfish served with a softly-curried risotto (£14.95) and the surf and turf (£23.95), a meaty
8oz char-grilled, 28-day matured sirloin served with an unusual but utterly delicious alliance of king prawns, chorizo, and samphire in garlic butter. A glass of Argentinian Malbec (£6.50 for 175ml) complemented the steak. For pudding, sharing the “indulgence of chocolate and peanut” (£10.95 and consisting of a warm dark chocolate fondant, a mini-Magnum chocolate crisp, a milk chocolate and praline mousse, and peanut ice-cream and brittle) proved a worthy apogee to the evening. Service was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive throughout. It’s great to see the Black Bull back to it best and once more a beacon for foodies. EATING OUT
Old favourite IT’S LONG BEEN ONE OF THE ORIGINALS AND ONE OF THE BEST, BUT WHAT MAKES THE AAGRAH SO SPECIAL? fter a busy day working and driving between appointments, three hours in total, the only thing that kept us going was the promise of a Friday night curry. An Aagrah curry in pretty Garforth to be exact, 15 minutes from the centre of Leeds. Now, there are a few Aagrah restaurants scattered across North and South Yorkshire, all with the same exacting high standards. The group is run by founder and chairman Mohammed Sabir MBE, Dbs and Managing Director Mohammed Aslam MBE, Deputy Lieutenant, who each have received many awards since the Aagrah had it’s incarnation in 1977. Our restaurant of choice, Garforth, was owed to the fact we had eaten there before. Wasim Aslam, director and manager, who has been managing Aagrah restaurants from the impressively young age of 19, with his super team, have always made us, and all their customers, welcome from the minute you walk through his door. They appeared to know each diner by name, everyone working hard to make you feel like it’s your first dining experience in their particular restaurant. We were first there, 5.30pm, opening time – we were starved! The powerful fusion of aromas hit us like a, well, like a direct train to Kashmir! Whack, straight to the senses. For sheer ease and speed, (I told you we were hungry) we ordered a Mixed Platter to share whilst we studied the vast menu. It arrived quickly and was the right choice for two hungry travellers. I counted seven varieties of their starters, all on one plate: Vegetable samosa, onion bahji, grilled lahsen mushrooms, (garlic mushrooms to you and I, marinated with ginger, lime, green chillies, herbs and spices), paneer tikka (gorgeous and spicy hot), seekh tikka, chicken tikka and machli (fish) masala. Who could complain about that at £7.95?
A
Working our way through the above settled us in to what we ordered next. Platter number two actually. It was a beautiful light dish of sea bass with grilled vegetables (£15.95), exactly as described, mild mannered with a hint of spice. The restaurant was by now filling up, the early dinner was clearly popular and a winner here at Garforth, at least 15 tables were now occupied. “Just a slow start for us” I was told, but it looked exceptionally busy by any restaurant’s standards. After a little break, we ventured on to our mains, Lahori Charga for me (£11.95) and Chicken Balti Chilli for him (£9.95). The succulent pieces of Charga, literally meaning chicken on the bone, was just heaven, marinated for as long as possible in spices and then traditionally steamed till it’s almost done and then deep fried. It was served in a beautiful sauce and was beyond delicious. My lovely fellow diner’s Chicken Chilli Balti was both hot AND spicy, I didn’t hear a murmur from him for what seemed a couple of minutes and I couldn’t work out if he was savouring the moment or the heat was getting the better of him. Apparently it was a mixture of both, he told me, when he managed to get his brain and tastebuds used to the heat. He certainly wasn’t complaining. The only choice left to make now was who was going to drive back down the M1, we were both thoroughly contented and full. Bookings are advisable even though the restaurant has recently been extended to accommodate its renowned popularity. Aagrah Garforth Aberford Road, Garforth Leeds, LS25 2HF Tel: 0113 287 6606

Going underground WE DELVE INTO THE WORLD OF THE MAN CAVE – AND LOOK WHAT YOU COULD BE BUYING TO MAKE IT STAND OUT FROM THE REST. BY RICHARD ABBEY. he man cave. It’s a thing. Some might even say phenomenon. Be it a room, space or corner, it’s an area dedicated and reserved for all things male. An oasis of solitude for drinking, watching sports, playing games and dabbling with that electric guitar you’ve had lying around for years. Always wanted that 70-inch TV? Put one in there. State-of-the-art stereo? Yes please. A bar with Vespastyle stools? Go right ahead. I’m sure you’re getting the picture. When you’ve had a killer week, you come home to the kids arguing over the remote and wife has a list of jobs for you as long as her arm, you can take yourself off for some alone time, crack yourself open a cold one from the conveniently located beer fridge and catch up with the latest Leeds game in Dolby 7.1 surround sound. Selfish? Maybe. Indulgent? Probably. But these little corners of manliness are becoming more common and let’s face it, it beats a cold, dusty shed any day. So if you’ve got a spare bedroom, basement or shipping container that’s begging to be given a new lease of life, we take a look at what you could be buying to make your man cave stand out from the rest. From pool tables to pinball machines, the choice is yours. Just remember, no girls aloud.

SPRING CLEAN
Declutter and de-stress REORGANISING YOUR HOME IS GOOD FOR BODY, MIND AND SOUL. PHOEBE FULLER GETS ADVICE FROM INTERNET SENSATIONS MARIE KONDO AND MRS HINCH. or the uninitiated (I was myself, until recently!), Marie Kondo and Mrs Hinch happen to be two of the biggest names in cleaning and home organisation of the moment, so you can trust that you’re in safe hands when you decide to take the plunge and start this big spring clean! Having taken the internet – and Netflix, would you believe?! – by storm, Marie Kondo is certainly flavour of the week for people who can’t seem to shake the clutter. Appealing to the recent minimalism trend, MK wants to spread the joy of tidying up and firmly believes that a tidy home is a happy home. She’s even written a book on the subject, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising, so tidying is an art-form these days, who knew? If you’ve ever watched her in action (seriously, tune in to her show on Netflix) it’s no surprise that so many people are converted although, I must say, the best part is how many people apparently don’t know how to fold t-shirts. Marie has built an entire career around… well, being good at tidying away other people’s clutter, although I think she prefers her
F

actual title: organising consultant. Yes, you’re in very safe hands indeed. But tidying would be useless if you didn’t follow it up with a good deep clean, wouldn’t it? That’s certainly a sentiment that Mrs Hinch, the Essex-based hairdresser turned cleaning guru, shares. She went viral with her Instagram posts detailing her ingenious (and cheap!) cleaning tips and hacks, quickly racking up an enormous social media following that have been dubbed the ‘Hinch Army’ who follow her tips, tricks, and product recommendations obsessively – which may be why you can never seem to find any bottles of Zoflora on the shelves of your local Sainsbury’s. Mrs Hinch – real name, Sophie Hinchcliffe – has jumped on the book bandwagon too, and details the way cleaning has helped her to deal with anxiety in her debut, Hinch Yourself Happy: All the Best Cleaning Tips to Shine Your Sink and Soothe Your Soul. I might buck the trend and see if I can find commercial success with a book on the joy of mess and clutter, watch this space…
SPRING CLEAN
Tips for organisation from Marie Kondo: 1. Tidy by category, not room
The Marie Kondo method is based around the following system: begin by organising your clothes – whichever room they may be from – followed by books, then papers and documents, miscellaneous items, and lastly, sentimental items. Saving your sentimental items until last is so you can’t use tidying up as an excuse to grab a bottle of wine and spend hours gushing over old photographs… 2. Piles! Piles of stuff!
Effective organisation, according to Marie Kondo, begins with what can only be described as pure chaos – overwhelm yourself before you’ve even begun by throwing everything from one category into a foreboding, bonfire-like pile. By putting it all into a pile you’re forced to confront the extent of your collection and… oh sod it, you know what? You’ll probably need that bottle of wine, after all! 3. Discard, but thankfully
Wine in hand, it’s time to begin getting rid of items from each pile that you no longer want to hold on to but – there’s a catch – before you chuck an item into the ‘nah’ pile, you’ve got to thank that item for its service. Yes, you read correctly, thank an inanimate object. Supposedly, this will assist you in severing ties with said item and help you in moving onto the items that… 4. …Spark joy!
Arguably the biggest rule to come from Marie Kondo is that whatever item(s) you choose to keep, they have to fulfil one key purpose: they must ‘spark joy’. This is where some mindfulness comes into play – you confront your big, scary pile of stuff and handle each and every item carefully, the items that spark joy will make you feel immediately happy when you touch them. 5. Do you know how to fold things?
No, you don’t. If you want to live it up a-la-MK, you can’t just fold any old way. Fold your t-shirts, skirts, dresses, and other items of wearable clobber in such a way that they can stand up in your drawers; this shall be a strict hanger-free zone. Standing clothes in a drawer saves space, allowing more room in your wardrobe for items that can’t be folded easily (jackets, shoes…).
How to ‘Hinch’ your home: 1. Keep your sink sparkling
You might not think that a restful sleep begins with a clean sink but, for Mrs Hinch, it does. She makes sure to give her sink and plughole a deep clean every night before bed which, honestly, seems a little unhinched (geddit?) to me. She pours soda crystals down the plughole, followed by white vinegar and then flushes through with a capful of Zoflora to disinfect and freshen. 2. Holy grail products
Mrs Hinch has a huge arsenal of cleaning products for everything from the windows to the sofa, but she swears by multi-purpose products that can really do it all. Two of her favourites? A Minky sponge, and a tub of The Pink Stuff which works wonders for getting rid of tough stains on ovens, oven racks, worktops, sinks, and everything in between. 3. Skirt the dirt
Even the skirting boards aren’t safe from a good scrub and Mrs Hinch has an unusual tip for getting them gleaming: fabric softener. She swears by a mixture of fabric softener and water to clean and de-scuff the boards without stripping them of paint and, of course, the trusty Minky sponge is her weapon of choice for this task! 4. Freshen up your bin
To really kick things up a notch, make sure you give your bin it’s very own dousing of perfume. Well, not really, but soaking some kitchen roll in Zoflora and keeping it in the bottom of your bin will give the same effect. If you’re relatively unbothered about making sure your bin smells of flowers every time you walk past it, then congratulate yourself on not having completely lost the plot just yet! 5. Maybe just buy a show home instead?
Let’s be real for a minute, who really has the time to deep clean their sink and plughole every night before bed, wash every skirting board in their house at least once a week, and still care enough to concern themselves with making their bin smell like a posy? Perhaps it’s best to keep these tips for those unexpected days off when you’ve got the time to go hard… at home. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 67

TEN THINGS YOU MUST DO IN THE GARDEN IN APRIL. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Sow vegetable seeds such as cauliflowers and winter cabbage in trays for planting out in June or directly sow Brussels sprouts into well prepared seed beds. Remember to apply a granular feed such as Vitax Q4 a week before sowing to give your seedlings a great start. 2. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as lilies and gladioli in pots and/or beds. Put a layer of sharp grit at the bottom of the planting holes to sit the bulbs on to give them good drainage. 3. Remove faded flower heads from spring flowering bulbs – don’t be tempted to cut back or tie up the foliage, but remember to top dress around them as the foliage dies down, with a granular high potash feed, such as Toprose, to build the bulbs up for a good healthy start for next year. 4. Plant chitted main-crop potatoes at least 6cm deep in pots or vegetable plots, along with late onion sets and shallots. 5. If dry, April is traditionally the first main cut of the year for lawns. Make sure the blades are on a high setting for the first cut. 6. Check slug prevention around herbaceous, alpines and young veg plants, where new growth is appearing. Slug traps are ideal for this, use a high yeast content beer to get the best results. Alternatively use a mulch of sheep’s wool slug pellets, such as “Slug Gone” that forms a mat of coarse fibres that discourage the slugs and snails from crossing to get to the young shoots. As the wool breaks down it also provides nutrients to the plants. 7. Prune forsythia as soon as finished flowering to give enough time for new buds to form for next year, as this popular spring flowering shrub, flowers on the previous year’s growth. 8. Water seedlings prior to transplanting/pricking out into pots or seed beds. Finish hardening off bedding plants in cold frames, still check to protect from late frosts 9. Place supports such as bamboo, pea sticks or plastic coated metal around herbaceous perennials such as delphiniums, paeonia, alstroemerias, asters and lupins. Doing this now, provides support at all stages of growth and prevents damage to root systems. 10. Weed around fruit trees and shrubs, carefully removing all perennial types such as dandelion, creeping thistles, brambles, ground elder and bind-weed, preferably with a hand trowel to ensure safe removal of all roots, and dispose of in normal household waste, not in your compost bin on a dry day, hoe off annual weeds such as sow thistles, chickweed, and orache.
