Growing appetite SPINNING ACRES – AN ONGOING SUCCESS STORY IN LS6. he Spinning Acres £40million build to rent scheme in Far Headingley, LS6, is a runaway success story within the regional rental sector. Not yet half-way through its roll-out as part of a long-term vision and masterplan, which aims to create a new community in this part of the city, the appetite for property within this exclusive, high-end rental scheme, just keeps on growing. Located three miles to the north-west of Leeds within the Far Headingley Conservation Area, and arguably, with one of the best postcodes in the city, Spinning Acres – so called in a nod to its textile heritage and popularity as ‘the place to live’ at the peak of the industrial revolution – is clearly maintaining its reputation today as a highly desirable address. The development has been conceived by the market-leading Pickard Properties, a family firm established in Headingley over 50 years ago with a solid reputation for the quality of its rental properties and high service standards. As the most ambitious build to rent scheme undertaken by Pickard Properties to date, director Miles Pickard, is keen to demonstrate that rental can be a longterm option, not merely a last resort. He hopes that renters will fall in love with their new home and decide to stay for the long term. With quality built into every facet of design and a painstaking approach to getting every detail right, this kind of response is not entirely without foundation. As a result, the award-winning

T

Spinning Acres is really setting the standard for rental property in the Leeds area. With two acres of communal open space at its heart and surrounded by mature trees and ornamental planting, its village green is a haven for play or relaxation. What’s more, Spinning Acres is only 20 minutes from the city centre making it a perfect location for those who have a job in Leeds or the surrounding areas. Phases one, two and three have already been launched offering a range of two, three, four and five-bedroom new build and refurbished accommodation. The next phases are imminent and should begin later in the year featuring two blocks of new build apartments with one, two and three bedrooms. All properties are available furnished with statement furniture from leading

manufacturers, or unfurnished, and include the highest quality fixtures and fittings throughout. To find out about the forthcoming phases or to check out current availability, Pickard Properties are confident you will find the kind of home you’ve always dreamt about and look forward to returning to, which is why they know, you’ll love the place you live. Glorious mud YORK, ARE YOU READY TO GET PRETTY MUDDY? his year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone – women, men and children – to join the Race for Life. If you signed up months ago or you’re still unsure, here’s everything you need to know about taking part in Pretty Muddy.

T

What is it?

Race for Life Pretty Muddy is a 5k muddy obstacle course where you scramble over the A-frame and crawl through the mud pit while raising valuable funds for beating cancer. You must be over 13 years old to take part. What about Pretty Muddy Kids?

Pretty Muddy Kids is an obstacle course designed just for children including scramble nets, space hoppers, mud chutes and muddy pools. The event is open to boys and girls aged from five to 12 years old. There is a minimum height requirement of 1.2m and all children must be accompanied by a supervising adult, who have free entry to the event. 30 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

When does it take place?

What is the course like?

Pretty Muddy takes place on Saturday 14 September at The Knavesmire. The traditional Race for Life 5k and 10k will also take place at the same venue on Sunday 15 September.

The 5k course is a flat course using both the Knavesmire and the perimeter track of the racecourse. The terrain is a mixture of grass and tarmac pathways with lots of mud and obstacles.

Can I still enter?

What if my child gets tired during Pretty Muddy Kids?

Yes! The event sets off in waves with slots still available, sign up at raceforlife.org. Adult entry: £19.99 Child: £10. What will I need?

There are no showers or lockers at Pretty Muddy events but there is a bag drop area. You might want to bring a change of clothes for after the event and a towel to wipe off the worst of the mud.

Pretty Muddy Kids is a 5km course but at the majority of venues, there will be a shortcut available at approximately 2km or 3km, which will lead back to the finish, this will be signposted on the day. If the shortcut is taken, it may mean missing out some obstacles, but we will make sure all children get to take part in the muddy slide at the end. Adults accompanying children will run alongside the course but will not be allowed to take part on the obstacles.

What facilities are there?

Toilets, bag drop area, refreshments and parking will all be available. Please note this event is not suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs.

I don’t fancy getting muddy, is there any other way I can help?

You can apply to be a volunteer on the day by visiting raceforlife.org

THE DIARY

Expanding horizons WITH A CAREER NOW APPROACHING 50 YEARS, LOCAL ARTIST NEIL SIMONE RECENTLY OPENED THE DOORS TO HIS GALLERY, THE CHAPEL. orn in London, Neil Simone was destined to become an artist from a young age, drawing everything from comic book characters to war scenes. He was fuelled by a rich imagination and would while away many hours thinking and drawing but it was by chance that he got his big break – and in the most bizarre of circumstances. Having married and settled in Harrowon-the-Hill in the 1960s, Neil was, at that time, a frustrated creative. Painting when time allowed, he was working part-time as a forecourt attendant at a local garage (one of many jobs he had), when a chance meeting led to a seemingly impossible change of career path.

B

‘Reflections’

36 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

“I was out in the back garden shooting my paintings with an air rifle when my landlord called round,” reminisces Neil. “He asked me what I was doing and I explained that they [the paintings] weren’t good enough. Anyway, I didn’t know but he was head of the art department at the Road Transport Industry Training Board and he offered me a job.” This change in circumstances brought Neil and his work north. “I was commissioned to a do a mural when he [my landlord] said, ‘why don’t you come to my other house in Harrogate?’; that was The Priory on Trinity Road by The Stray. He offered

me the chance to take on the basement, which was in a real state. He said: ‘with your imagination and a cheap rate this could be your start’. That’s really why I came up here in 1970 and turned professional and haven’t looked back since.” Having settled in the spa town, which he described as having “unique character and atmosphere which it still retains to this day”, Neil set about perfecting his work, which at the time he felt lacked a powerful subject matter. The birth of his first child proved to be a huge turning point; the sense of responsibility led to a time of deep reflection. It was while looking at one of

THE DIARY

‘The Unexpected Outcome’

his oil paintings propped against the studio wall that he began to imagine the foreground of the painting spilling onto the floor. He emerged from this introspection knowing he wanted to create paintings that had elements of the impossible and that were capable of transporting people into an alternative vision of reality. “My style evolved,” explains Neil. “My paintings began to explain what it’s like to see the world through the eyes of an artist, how one idea leads to another, by stepping back and seeing the same subject at a different time. Perspective changes on all levels. “I paint the way I do because I see the world as a dimension of shadows, shapes, contradictions and ever-changing fragile boundaries.” The results, as you can see, are stunning. The vivid colours and levels of detail are exceptional giving the paintings a surreal, fantastical quality. With a career now approaching 50 years, it’s no surprise that Neil has seen his work displayed all over the world, including Australia, Chicago, Paris and

Harrods, London. But he’s much happier closer to his Nidderdale home and was pleased to announce the opening of his Chapel Gallery in April of this year, something which, perhaps unsurprisingly, has also proved to be a success. The fascinating and unique building has been his home for the last five years but a change in family circumstances presented the opportunity to open part of it as a gallery. His decision to open four days a week – Thursday to Sunday – has proved to be a good one and there are plans to host further exhibitions and Neil is also teaching aspiring artists, something he describes as ‘strange’.

“It’s strange when you’re actually analysing what you do to then explain that to someone else,” he said. “I’m finding it very different in the way I approach everything but it’s worked out really well. [My student] just wanted to learn to paint; I show her how I’d do it and she goes from there.” Neil is particularly thankful of his surroundings and credits his home as having a huge influence, not just on his work but on his lifestyle too: “Yorkshire for any creative mind has it all. Its beautiful landscape, its friendly people, its historical heritage. I love living in Yorkshire, it has made who I am today. I just love it our here, it’s magic.” The Chapel Gallery The Old Chapel, Main Street Glasshouses near Pateley Bridge HG3 5QY Tel: 01423 711795 Email: info@neilsimone.com https://neilsimone.com

This year, YSP’s headline exhibition is ‘Sculpture’, over 40 works by one of the USA’s most outstanding 20th century artists, David Smith. Smith challenges sculptural conventions by merging industry and nature to create a unique and creative feel. He is well known for his ability to work with steel, a notoriously tricky material to sculpt with as it’s so stubborn. Highlights inside the gallery include some of Smith’s earliest work, mainly made using materials sourced from the Virgin Islands which he visited in 193132, and progresses through many years to show how his artwork has evolved and developed with time. Smith’s work is rarely displayed outside of the US, meaning that the exhibition at YSP (available to visit any time until early January) is near the top of the list of must-sees for 2019. Until 29 September, YSP is host to Kimsooja’s ‘To Breathe’ exhibition. The historic chapel at YSP is transformed into an enthralling installation featuring light and mirrors to explore the meditative qualities of space. The exhibition takes inspiration from the ideas of female labour and craft, such as sewing and weaving, to portray the role of women. >>>

Unlike other exhibitions, ‘To Breathe’ is accompanied by a recorded soundtrack of the artist breathing, making the experience all the more engaging and spectacular to the visitor. You can also see the theme explored metaphorically, with parts of the exhibition showing the body as the needle, weaving together different cultures and cities in a celebration of the sharing of humanity. Alongside these other fantastic exhibitions on offer this year, Yorkshire Sculpture International has welcomed the Turner Prize-winning artist Damien Hirst to Yorkshire, sharing seven of his major sculptures with Leeds city centre, Leeds Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. At YSP, four of Hirst’s sculptures have been placed in the 18th century deer park, and are available for public viewing until 29 September. The ten-metre tall ‘The Virgin Mother’ stands against the breathtaking backdrop of the Lower Lake, and its powerful presence can be seen from across the landscape. Find out more about Yorkshire Sculpture International and their work with Damien Hirst’s sculptures at www.yorkshire-sculpture.org. YSP isn’t only home to some of the world’s greatest sculptural exhibitions, it’s also a centre for public events and workshops throughout the year. On 7 September, designer and artist Ella Doran will visit YSP to host a oneday collage and painting workshop involving drawing from observation and imagination to create your own imaginary garden, landscape or interiorscape. Over 55s are welcome to join the Art and Social group at YSP for tea or coffee and cake followed by a gentle walk around the park, taking a closer look into some of the exhibitions. You will also have the chance to unleash your creative side, with materials provided for, in activities such as drawing and painting. You can find tickets for the Art and Social event on YSP’s website, priced at £7.50. The event is open from 2-4pm until 31 October 2019. Every Saturday and Sunday until 27 October, you can join the free Art and Landscape tour between 11.30am and 12.30pm. YSP volunteers take visitors on a guided walk around the park, explaining the meaning and inspiration behind some of the exhibitions. There’s something for everyone at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, from innovative exhibitions displaying the pure talent and dedication of artists across the world, to chances for visitors themselves to try their hand at creative workshops and sessions. With ticket prices and entrance fees varying for each event, be sure to check the website for up to date information on what’s on at Yorkshire Sculpture Park this year. Pedal power EDINBURGH BICYCLE COOPERATIVE LOOK AT THE APPEAL OF ELECTRIC BIKES.

Three electric bikes to consider:

What is an electric bike?

Like the name suggests it’s a bike that gives you a boost through the use of an onboard electric motor. However, an electric bike still needs to be pedalled. If you stop pedalling, you will stop cycling. The electric assist gives you as much (or as little) help as you need. For example, you could easily increase the assist mode as you approach a steep hill and turn it back down again once you’ve reached the summit. To comply with EU regulations, the motor is limited to 15.5 miles (25km) per hour. You can pedal faster than that, it’s just that the motor won’t help beyond this speed.

We have a huge range of electric bikes to try but here are three which showcase the range of styles available.

1

Isn’t an electric bike cheating?

If you’re competing in the Tour de France – yes. If you just want to get to work without needing to shower – no. Remember, although you are getting help from the motor, you still have to work – it’s not like sitting in a car or on a scooter. Plus, the assist level can be changed depending how much help you want. It’s also not cheating if the alternative is not being able to cycle at all. Electric bikes are a great option for someone getting back into cycling or who has a health condition. We sell a range of frame styles including step-through which are easy to get on and off from, no matter how nimble you are (or aren’t). More than that, using an electric bike can replace the need for a car (or bus) journey which helps combat congestion and air pollution. It’s also much easier (and cheaper) to park – particularly if you’re going somewhere busy like the city centre. Give it a try.

Demoing a bike over one or two days gives you a real taste of what life with an electric bike would be like to help you decide if it’s the right purchase for you. Visit www.edinburghbicycle.com or call us on 0345 257 0808 to book. 48 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Whyte Coniston From £74.37 per month One of our most popular electric bikes ever! A smooth riding and very reliable bike with frame styles for both men and women.

Kalkhoff Endeavour 5.I Move From £86.44 per month Enclosing the battery inside the downtube creates a more normal-looking bike no matter what frame style you opt for – unisex, women or step-through.

CYCLING

Top-class competition HARROGATE WILL BECOME THE CENTRE OF THE CYCLING WORLD THIS SEPTEMBER AS THE UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS RIDES INTO TOWN. Images courtesy SWPix.com

his September, the UCI Road World Championships visit the UK for the first time since 1982, as Yorkshire hosts the 92nd edition of the challenging cycle races which determine who will wear the iconic ‘UCI Rainbow Jersey’ this year. As always, the event promises a week of action-packed racing that captivates spectators and viewers worldwide. The Championships will take place between 21 and 29 September, for a nine-day event that sees Harrogate as the main competition town. There will be various races for different age groups and abilities starting in towns throughout Yorkshire, each finishing in Harrogate. Races include Individual Team Trials, Road Races and the all-new Team Time Trial Mixed Relay. Organisers are aiming for the most “inclusive, innovative and inspiring”

Championships yet, with millions of fans expected to line up at the side of the road to cheer on the cyclists. As well as the many dedicated fans, the government has committed to investing £24million into the event in an attempt to make it as spectacular and memorable as possible. More than 1,000 of the world’s best male and female riders, from over 75 countries, will gather in Yorkshire to participate in the event this year. Each Last year’s event

race will make its way through Yorkshire towns, including Doncaster, Leeds, York and Ripon, and they will all then head to the ultimate finish line in Harrogate. With the race routes travelling widely through the whole of Yorkshire, be sure to check the route maps on the Championships’ website to find out if they’re coming to a place near you. The Championships will allow Yorkshire to build up its ever-growing reputation in the international cycling fraternity, after hosting The Grandest of Grand Départs in 2014 for the Tour de France, and the annual legacy race, the Tour de Yorkshire. Yorkshire is well and truly becoming an important and recognised centre for worldwide cycling, not to mention for British cycling too. Championship organisers Yorkshire 2019 have teamed up with British Cycling to make the opening weekend as

CYCLING

family-friendly and inclusive as possible by scheduling various activities to target younger spectators. British Cycling chief executive Julie Harrington said: “We want to ensure that this once-in-ageneration event provides every child with the opportunity to ride a bike.” British Cycling has confirmed that they will be running their Ready, Set, Ride and Go-Ride programmes this year, which will allow young people to sample the freedom of cycling by teaching and developing skills in a safe environment. In addition to these hands-on workshops, Yorkshire 2019 is organising a funfair, professional Parkour and BMX displays, tracks where children can work on their cycling skills and a whole host of big screens dotted throughout Yorkshire for families to enjoy watching the sporting action unfold before them. With few days left until the event, adults and children alike are getting involved and supporting the upcoming Championships all over Yorkshire. In June, Harrogate High School decided on a novel way to mark the ‘100 days to go’ milestone by lining up to spell out a huge ‘100’ in the school grounds. In reference to the significant day, Yorkshire 2019 CEO Andy Hindley said:

“It’s exciting to have reached this milestone, and we’re on track to deliver a truly world-class event. Already we’re starting to see rainbow-coloured flags and bunting lining the streets of Yorkshire, and in 100 days’ time the country is going to be at the centre of the cycling world.” Every day throughout the Championships is sure to be jam-packed with fast-paced and tense sporting action that you won’t want to miss. To ensure that you don’t, here’s an overview some of the races to expect this year. From the off, you can expect top-class cycling. On Saturday 21 September, Yorkshire will host the 2019 ParaCycling International, the one-day paracycling event that will take place ahead of the Championships. This event will act as a qualifying round for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, so go and show your support along the route and cheer on these fantastic athletes. On Sunday 22 September, see the firstever Team Time Trial Mixed Relay taking place along the Harrogate Circuit. Riders will have to complete two circuits (28km) in teams of six (three women and three men), divided by their home countries. With this race having never

been ridden before, you can be sure of a totally unique experience. Tuesday 24 September will see some of the best international female riders compete head-to-head in the Women’s Elite Time Trial of 32.5km. The next day, on Wednesday 25 September, it’s the men’s turn as they take part in the 54km Men’s Elite Time Trial, with both finishing in Harrogate. The final weekend, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, will have the star attraction: the Elite Road Races. For women, this will take place on the Saturday, and the demanding course of 149.5km will have racers riding the route from Bradford to Harrogate, plus three circuits of Harrogate added to the end. Men will compete on Sunday, facing a course of 284.5km, starting in Leeds, and seven circuits of Harrogate. These two races are sure to be serious testers of the riders’ endurance and stamina. The main competition town of Harrogate has a challenging 14km finishing loop, with sharp turns and steep climbs, so the whole family are guaranteed to be on the edge of their seats at all times during the UCI Road World Championships this September. www.worlds.yorkshire.com

Race preview THE SPECIALIZED CONCEPT STORE, HARROGATE WILL BE AT THE HEART OF THE ACTION AS THE ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS COME TO TOWN. week of thrilling bike racing is coming to Yorkshire and boy oh boy is it going to be big. The Road World Championships run from 2229 September and by the end we’ll have 11 newly-crowned world champions. Let’s take a look at the racing we’ve got coming and who to watch out for…

A

The races The fashionable Victorian spa town of Harrogate is the finishing town for all the races, the finish line just a stone’s throw from the Specialized Concept Store. Alongside the traditional events, the brand new mixed team relay sees national squads take on a 28km course on the 22nd – an appetiser, if you will. It’ll be the first time national teams have taken on a TTT and the mixed twist should give it an extra thrill. The mid-week individual time trials will demand a lot from the riders, especially the elite men who’ll race 54km from Northallerton to Harrogate. The elite women will take on a lumpy 30km course the previous day, and everyone, men and women alike, will be glad of the three days recovery before the weekend. What could be considered the main events, the elite women’s and men’s road races, take place on the 28th and 29th respectively. The first 185km of the men’s marathon 285km route mimics the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ almost exactly, heading north out of Leeds and into the Dales. It’ll be up and down all day, the first major climb up Cray coming at the 60km mark. The

52 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

famous Buttertubs is next and then Grinton before returning to Harrogate for the technical finishing laps. The women’s race takes a very different route towards Harrogate, starting from Bradford and tackling the tough climbs of Norwood Edge and Lofthouse before looping back to Harrogate.

The favourites Of the Specialized-supported riders, the irrepressible Frenchman, Julian Alaphilippe, will be one of the most heavily marked riders after his incredible 2019 season. He’ll be well-suited to the lumpy route and his explosive kick will serve him well on the finishing laps. His Deceuninck-Quickstep teammate, Bob Jungels, has similar characteristics and will have the hopes of Luxembourg on his broad shoulders. In the same rider category is German national champion, Maximilian Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe, but he’ll have competition within his own national team. Big sprinters are expected to struggle in the tough first half of the race, but if it’s held together by the bigger squads, the fast men cannot be ruled out. Yes, it was about 100km shorter, but don’t

forget that Marcel Kittel was the first across the line at the 2014 Tour when it finished in Harrogate. Pascal Ackerman (Germany) and Elia Viviani (Italy) have been on stellar form this year and then there’s three-time rainbow jerseywearer Peter Sagan… And the women’s race? Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands will be a firm favourite to take victory. She’s more than done the rainbow bands proud this year, but if it’s not her day, don’t rule out her Boels-Dolmans teammate Annika Langvad who’ll be racing in Danish colours. The phenomenal mountain biker hasn’t done much racing in her first road season but second at Strade Bianche alone proves that she has the attributes to compete in Yorkshire. Keep checking back for more news and updates as the World Championships get closer and team lineups start to take shape. And if you’re planning a trip, make sure to drop in at our store.

Yorkshire businessman continues work of his late wife PAIN MANAGEMENT INJECTION TREATMENT AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. businessman from North Yorkshire who thought he might have to give up the hobby he is passionate about, due to crippling back pain, has been able to continue thanks to pain management injection treatment at Spire Leeds Hospital. Stephen Hipps, 72, breeds prize-winning Ryeland sheep, one of the UK’s oldest breeds, at his farm near Harrogate. He had discectomy surgery 30 years ago and has suffered from debilitating pain caused by sciatica for many years, and more recently, arthritis. The steroid injections, given to him around once a year, at Spire Leeds means that he can be pain free and also regain the mobility required for the physically challenging work needed to prepare his flock for local shows. Stephen’s hobby has special significance for him as he and his late wife Margaret started breeding Ryelands in 1981. Admirers of the breed include HRH the Prince of Wales. After Margaret sadly passed away in 2007 Stephen decided to continue her work and carry on her legacy. Spending all of his spare time working with the breed helped him to cope with the grief, soon gaining a reputation as a top breeder and continuing to win prizes. “Margaret was extremely knowledgeable about the breed and showed for many years. I used to watch her which is how I learned. After her death I decided to have a go on my own and it soon turned into something I feel passionate about. Looking after the sheep, which can weigh 15 stones, is very physically demanding and you have to be physically fit. “Preparing the sheep for shows involved a lot of bending and stretching, twisting and turning. None of which I could do without pain management injections. I’m indebted to Dr Karen Simpson at Spire Leeds for without the treatment I don’t think it would have been possible to carry on,” said Stephen, who has two stepchildren and nine grandchildren.

A

The businessman, who owns Dale Sauna in Knaresborough, is now semi-retired and able to devote more time to his hobby, picking up many prizes. He has won the Ryeland Wool on the Hoof Championship three times and overall Supreme Wool on the Hoof. “Margaret would have been proud of this accolade as it was one of only a few my wife didn’t manage to achieve before she passed away and it’s a fitting tribute to her,” said Stephen who also won Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show 2016 with his shearling ram, Valentino. Dr Simpson, consultant in pain management, said: “Stephen had a long history of chronic degenerative multi-level spinal pain which was limiting his daily activities, his mobility and looking after his sheep. Clinical examination and spinal MRIs pinpointed the problem.” The treatment involved a combination of injections to manage the pain – facet blocks in the lumbar and thoracic regions of the back and dorsal root blocks. These are repeated around once a year or when needed. “His treatment options would be pain management versus surgery. We opted for a conservative approach with nerve blocks to aid physical therapies which we limited with careful assessment and timing of treatment when needed. Without the injections treatment he would have needed more medication with worsening side effects as he ages, and he may have had to consider surgery.” Stephen said: “The relief is immediate, there are no side effects, I feel 100 per cent better straight away and can go home the same day.” For further information on the pain management service call Spire Leeds on 0113 218 5967 or email info@spireleeds.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 53

BEAUTY

Fresh new look RHIANA HUGHES BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO HER SKIN WITH EXPERT ADVICE AND TREATMENTS FROM AESTHETIC HEALTH.

’ve been told on more than one occasion that I spend far too much time, money and energy on make up. You’d think that as a make up lover I’d have some semblance of knowledge when it comes to skincare, however it’s something that for a long time I didn’t have to think about. I was lucky enough to make it through my teenage years acne-free, but it seems that since then, each year has come with its own new set of skin problems. Where I’d once have been more than happy to head out to the shops, to dinner or even to drinks with friends completely bare-faced, now I struggle to leave the house without at least applying a bit of BB cream. Maybe it’s down to hormones, the products I use on a daily basis, or my lack of a real skincare routine, but my skin today can appear uneven both in colour and texture, with scarring and hyperpigmentation the direct result of my pimple-popping obsession. These are some of the concerns I voiced when I visited Aesthetic Health, one of the UK’s leading aesthetic clinics. Aesthetic Health’s experienced and attentive team offer a scientific yet holistic

Founded in 2008 by Dr Julia Sevi, Aesthetic Health is a discreet, comfortable and relaxing environment for both women and men to receive quality treatments. Though Aesthetic Health offer a long list of tempting treatments for the face, body, skin, hair and overall health, it was their signature HydraGenesis treatment I was booked in for. A combination of their bespoke HydraFacial and Laser Genesis treatments, HydraGenesis is somewhat of a mini-miracle, praised for tightening skin,

improving skin texture and congested or enlarged pores, oily or acne prone skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines, brown spots and hyperpigmentation. Not just a place you can pop in to get a quick facial – Aesthetic Health do things properly, booking me in for a consultation prior to my treatment so I could discuss my concerns and hopes for the future appearance of my skin. Aesthetic Practitioner Joanna was my consultant, confidently talking me through not only the treatment ahead, but through the photographs I’d had The charming clinic on Harrogate Road, Leeds

BEAUTY

taken earlier, making sure I had an understanding of my skin not only on the surface, but underneath it too. Making sure I had plenty of time to ask any questions on the treatment, and even on the clinic itself, Joanna then introduced me to Clinical Care Coordinator and Aesthetician Megan, the lovely lady in charge of breathing new life into my skin. The treatment was performed in two parts, with the HydraFacial followed by the Laser Genesis treatment. Though the big machines powering Megan’s tools in the corner can look and sound intimidating at first, after a minute or two it’s easy to forget they’re even there, or at least I did as I sunk further and further into the comfortable chair. Talking me through each step she performed, Megan made me feel instantly at ease, and I was more than happy to let her work her magic. As well as cleansing and thoroughly exfoliating my skin, Megan also gently extracted any impurities with a vacuum-like tool before adding nutrients and antioxidant protection back into my skin. HydraFacials are available as standalone treatments, and had this been my only treatment of the day I’d have left Aesthetic Health happy – it’s

definitely the perfect treatment for anyone looking to give their skin a quick lunchtime refresh. I’m more than happy that I got to stick around for the Laser Genesis treatment too, though. The state-of-theart Genesis technology heats deep levels of the dermis to promote the skin’s natural collagen production and shrink red blood vessels to give a natural, rejuvenated, even skin tone. Though lasers can be scary to some, I found the whole process surprisingly calming. The laser left my skin feeling as it might, had I been laying out in the sun, or under a surprisingly hot rain shower, but the heat didn’t last long at all and before long I felt myself wishing Megan would add another half-hour onto my treatment. Leaving the clinic, my skin felt tighter, smoother, and even after just the one treatment I noticed a reduction in the depth of the dark spots on my face. Aesthetic Health do more than just provide the treatment too, with them offering each client a personal treatment plan, highlighting the ways in which they can achieve their dream skin. For me, a course of six HydraGenesis treatments were suggested, and Megan and Joanna together helped put together a skincare

routine to help repair my skin between treatments. To try HydraGenesis for yourself, or to find out about the other treatments on offer, visit: Aesthetic Health 305 Harrogate Road, Leeds, LS17 6PA Tel: 0113 269 7274 www.aesthetichealth.co.uk

NORTHERN NIGHTS

NEW BARS AND NEW MENUS... THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS TO HEAD TO LEEDS THIS SUMMER.

Seasonal small plates Harvey Nichols Leeds has recently launched a seasonal small plate menu at the new Fourth Floor Bar. Offering customers a refreshed dining experience, the carefully curated menu showcases savoury favourites such as beef tartare with malthouse sourdough and beef dripping butter, cured salmon with avocado mousse, alongside a selection of moreish snacks and tempting sides. Adding a sweet note to the new offer, the homemade strawberry-sugared doughnuts with basil, Chantilly cream and chocolate sauce are a truly unmissable addition. Complemented by an extensive drinks list of stylish cocktails, local beers, fine wines and luxurious spirits, the newly refurbished Fourth Floor space and refreshed menu provides the perfect backdrop for an afterwork meet up or a refreshing pit-stop during a busy shopping day with friends. The bar is open Monday 10am-7pm, Tuesday to Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-5pm.

Who’s coming out to play? The Leeds nightlife scene is about to get a hot-as-hell upgrade with the arrival of Dollhouse. Residing in a beautiful grade-II listed building in the city centre’s historical Hirst’s Yard, this picture-perfect bar presents a fresh new concept from local lad and platinum-selling artist Tom Zanetti and DJ and entrepreneur Kane Towning. Located down a cobbled street just off Call Lane, the bar formerly known as Red Door has undergone an outrageously lavish makeover that will see it transformed into the city’s most Insta-worthy destination. “After a whirlwind decade of music and running sell-out events, we felt the stars were aligned when it came to bringing Dollhouse to our hometown,” said Tom. “The people of Leeds know how to have a good time, and this venue is the perfect blank canvas to create the ultimate nightlife destination. “Kane and I go way back, and we’ve always known how to play to our strengths to turn and create a great party. The concept is going to be something really special and what we have worked 15 years towards – we can not wait to bring Dollhouse to Leeds!” Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 65

EATING OUT

Grand affair IS THERE A FINER SETTING TO TAKE AFTERNOON TEA THAN AT THE NEWLYREFURBISHED MAJESTIC HOTEL, HARROGATE? ASKS CHRIS WILSON. f, like me, you haven’t visited The Majestic Hotel in Harrogate for a few years prepare to be well-and-truly bowled over by a glorious renovation that has preserved all the character of this palatial and stately Victorian venue and given it the classy and stylish makeover it deserves. Built in 1889, the hotel has always enjoyed a certain ‘wow factor’ thanks to its grand façade and spectacular setting, perched on a hill overlooking the town. But even the grandest of designs needs a little TLC from time to time, and The Majestic Hotel now has a complete look to match its name. Stroll slowly through the foyer, as you will want to linger and gaze up at the tall ceilings and beautiful intricate designs. A pale colour scheme and large windows accentuate the wonderful relaxing sense of space. The entire venue seems flooded with light. The theme continues in Carters Champagne Bar & Grill and Frederick’s Piano Lounge and Bar where there’s room to unwind and soak up the surroundings including some beautiful floral displays. The backlit bar looks spectacular and there’s a cocktail menu to match so... why not? We were here to sample a little

I

luxury and a mid-afternoon Old Fashioned (£8.50) and Bellini (£12.50) fitted the bill perfectly. It would have been tempting to give the cocktail list a thorough work-out and give in to the decadent delights of a lost weekend. But this was a midweek afternoon and we were here to check out the dining as well as drinking possibilities, and specifically to try the classic indulgence that is afternoon tea. I can’t think of a finer, friendlier, more fitting setting to enjoy a little luxury in the middle of the day. From a simple tea and scone to the traditional afternoon tea, there are several menu options to please all palates. If you don’t have a strong sweet tooth the savoury tea looks ideal, and vegetarians are also catered for. But for the full immersive experience follow my lead and indulge in a Majestic Afternoon Tea (£29 per person). My friend Kathleen and I chose our beverage of choice (coffee for her, Harrogate breakfast tea for me) and waited. We began with a smart cheffy touch, sharp and refreshing shot glasses of Cantaloupe melon gazpacho with apple foam. Then came delicious tapas-style portions of truffled chicken liver pate and ham hock & pickled carrot terrine.

Would Queen Victoria, looking down rather sternly from a portrait on the wall, have been amused by this break with tradition? Who cares, we loved it. Soon the true centrepiece of the table was being carefully placed between us, a three-tiered cake stand artfully arranged with savoury delights and sweet treats. Tradition and common sense demand that you start at the bottom and work up. Cut into neat but not too delicate rectangles, a tasty selection of savoury sandwiches and wraps eased us gently into the sweet treats to come. Level two was not without controversy as it contained two light-as-air and justbaked fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam on the side. So what is the etiquette here... jam first or cream? Being a lady of great refinement, Kathleen insisted that jam first looked neater, with a modest smear of cream on top. Personally I see the eating of a sweet scone as an exercise in gravity-defying gluttony, which means a massive dollop of cream first, followed by a spoonful of jam that will immediately try to escape down the side, necessitating speedy and none-too-refined scoffing. Less elegant, more fun…you decide. A memorable afternoon was rounded off in some style with a selection of immaculate cakes and macaroons. Star turn for me was the chocolate opera gateaux with chocolate crackling but the mango and passion fruit dacquoise and carrot cake were soft, sweet and lovely. In fact everything looked and tasted spectacular. Afternoon tea at this reinvigorated Harrogate landmark was a fabulous treat. Don’t miss out. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? CHASING THE SUN WITH MAVEER SINGH-PANGU.

id someone just say August? How we’ve already gotten almost two-thirds of the way through 2019 is beyond me, but what a summer I’ve had so far. I’ve not long since returned from a blissful two-week holiday in Bali, and I’m still chasing the sun as we speak. The trip was arranged by my aunt and her family who live in Australia, and I essentially gatecrashed and went along for the ride. The whole experience was a lot more zen than my manic Leeds lifestyle, and consisted of poolside cocktails, sea view dinners and lounging in my hammock. I like to think we gave Kim and the rest of the Kardashian clan Mav relaxing in Bali a run for their money on their recent Bali trip, because everything from our accommodation to the seafood was out know!) and serves up some of the best of this world exceptional. The launch party was suitably however, and it was all hands-on deck as decadent and packed to the rafters, while soon as I landed on home turf working the Leeds Pride Special was camper than on the exciting Dollhouse VIP launch. This highly-stylised concept bar is unlike Christmas with queues around the block for days (and some very sore heads on anything you’ve ever seen and is the the Monday morning I suspect). brainchild of Leeds very own platinum Going back to August, it just so selling Sony artist Tom Zanetti and DJ happens to be my birthday month and and entrepreneur Kane Towning. EATING OUT

From the coast to the countryside STUNNING SEAFOOD IS THE STAR OF THE SHOW AT THE INN AT SOUTH STAINLEY. n a typical English summer’s day, in other words a miserable heavens-have-opened Friday, we drove to a small village outside Harrogate to visit The Inn at South Stainley. This large country pub is stylish and quintessentially English from the outside, complete with a lovely veranda which looks, weather permitting, like the perfect spot to while away a few hours. Inside, the pub had a modern rustic feel with large open fires and cosy tweed-and leather booths which, despite it being a sizeable venue, added a lovely cosy and intimate feeling. We relaxed into our surroundings with a J20 (£2.60) for the designated driver and a pint of Estrella (£4.90) for my partner, with a bottle of Harrogate spring water (£3.95) for the table. With a regular menu and specials board there’s a wide selection and it was clear from the outset that someone at The Inn is passionate about seafood. So, when in Rome... I started with a splendid main menu plate of devilled crab, salmon and shrimp with sea salt croutes (£6.95). The seafood was sparklingly fresh and the crunchy croutes added an extra dimension of taste and flavour. My partner opted for one of the specials, describing the soft shell crab

O

with sour dough and parsley mayonnaise (£9.50), as simply outstanding. The crispy batter was light, the crab obviously fresh from the sea and the fresh-baked sourdough came in very handy soaking up the last drops of very moreish mayonnaise. The Inn is not just a pub with a great menu, it’s also a pet-friendly hotel and we noticed many of the residents had very sensibly taken up the option to dine once they’d booked in. We arrived to a peaceful early evening but the dining area soon became busy, so booking is definitely recommended. Service was swift and very friendly and for mains my partner once again opted for seafood from the specials board, this time a peppered tuna steak with creamed spinach and sea salt fries (£18.50). The tuna was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. Meanwhile my eye had been caught by a main menu dish that sounded very interesting, namely Persian spiced chicken breast with jewelled rice, rose petal harissa, almonds and yoghurt (£14.95). This was certainly a dish that made a big first impression – it looked so colourful, and tasted equally stunning. There were so many different elements to the dish, the spicy chicken and rice contrasting with sweet apricots and pomegranates. As a result every mouthful

was slightly different, and that kept me coming back for more until the plate was clean. Desserts kept up the highly inventive standards. My lemon meringue cocktail with lemon curd, buttered shortbread and cream (£5.95) was not unlike a lemon-scented Eton mess and after all that rich food it was light and refreshing. Across the table there was a more indulgent dessert on offer as my partner made short work of a deliciously rich dark chocolate fondant with honeycomb and salted caramel ice cream (£6.50). Both sweets looked a treat and rounded off a special meal, in a warm and welcoming venue with an emphasis on fresh produce served up with passion and real flair. It certainly seemed only fitting that by the time we left the sun had broken through the clouds. The Inn Ripon Road, South Stainley, Harrogate, H3 3ND Tel: 01423 779060 www.innatstainley.co.uk

Milestone celebrations LEEDS TILE SPECIALIST REMAINS BULLISH IN FACE OF BREXIT CHALLENGES. eaching a major milestone, such as 45 years in business, is always an achievement but in the current climate Leeds-based tiles business, Ceramique Internationale, has even more reason to celebrate. The multi-million-pound business, which has its 4,500 sq ft Tiles and Mosaics showroom and warehouse on Royds Lane, Leeds, distributes wholesale products to hundreds of secondary retailers across the north and Midlands, as well as working on high-profile commercial projects across the UK. Owned and run together for the past 25 years by childhood friends Peter Vann and Cameron Fraser, Ceramique Internationale is on track to hit its target of reaching £4million turnover by 2020 having maintained its stable market position, despite the many financial and political challenges of the last decade, and while other prominent businesses in the sector have failed to survive. The business is marking the 45th anniversary by supporting a number of local charities and projects, including St Gemma’s Hospice and a primary school in Harrogate which is creating a commemorative mosaic to mark its own centenary. In addition, the business – which was one of the first to enter the

R

electric underfloor heating market over 25 years ago – has also announced a new partnership with Warmtoes Underfloor Heating to sell and distribute its products in all sectors of the business. Cameron Fraser said: “We have weathered various financial crises over the years and, quite frankly, are welcoming the challenges that our politicians are currently presenting. “Not everyone can say the same – in recent months two high profile national companies in the tile sector, a manufacturer and a distributor, have gone into administration, and there may be others to follow. Our investment in the company over recent years and the uniquely long and very strong relationships we have with our key European suppliers means we are already well ahead of the game to ensure we continue to innovate and offer all our customers the very best products and the most reliable service. “Our business ethos has three cornerstones – reliability, value and knowledge. We work with the very best tile manufacturers in Europe – the majority in Italy – so innovative quality products, backed up by outstanding customer service and the knowledge of a long-standing workforce is a formula for success. “As well as the wholesale and retail

sides of the business we work extensively with designers, architects and developers on a wide range of diverse projects, including London Underground and highprofile spas and hotels including Rudding Park, Low Wood and Formby Hall and this is an area that we are continuing to record growing success within.” And it is the strong relationships with European suppliers – the majority in Italy and Spain – which has allowed Ceramique Internationale to go from strength to strength. The sales team works closely with interior designers, project managers and architects across the North of England to specify and supply the perfect tiles and mosaics for each project or development. High profile projects undertaken in recent years and months include supplying 21,000 sq ft of tiles to the new £9million spa at Rudding Park in Harrogate; kitting out the swimming pool at Axholme Leisure Centre and providing tiles for both The Fleece Hotel in Richmond, North Yorkshire and the new HQ for Nomad Catering. In addition, showroom manager Emma prides herself on providing a personal expertise to domestic customers who regularly ask for help with the design of their home renovations. She has also developed a reputation for problemsolving, researching suppliers to source bespoke products for jobs of all shapes and sizes.

Ceramique Internationale started life as a tile fixing company in Bradford in 1974 then owned by Robert Ibbitson, who quickly recognised greater profitability in importing and selling tiles and so joined forces with two factories in France. The company grew quickly, opening showrooms in Bradford and on the affluent Kings Road in London, plus an export office in Singapore and architectural office in Northern Ireland. Cameron Fraser joined the business in 1982, while Peter Vann, who had met Cameron at Ilkley Grammar School at the age of ten, joined the business as a partner in 1994. The current workforce of 17 people offer more than 300 years of combined service. The Leeds warehouse holds well over 100,000 square metres of tiles in stock at any one time, comprising the very latest fashions in floor and wall tiles, mosaics and associated products. Smaller deliveries can be made next day with all other stock deliveries being fulfilled within days. And those more bespoke orders deliveries arrive from Europe every week. All these factors help Ceramique Internationale to remain ahead of the game. A key benefit for visitors to the tilesandmosaics.co.uk showroom is the team’s ability to accurately pin-point anything from Pinterest and other such inspirational on-line media and trace it, or something very close – which can then be brought in rapidly from Italy or

The Spa at Formby Hall

Spain – usually within 21 days of order. The relationships with the European manufacturers, and close connection to the commercial sector mean that Cameron, Peter and the rest of the team always have an eye on the current emerging tiling trends, usually well ahead of these appearing into retail markets – so, in terms of colours, shapes, surfaces and even laying patterns, its customers see the best new ideas first. In fact, they are both regularly featured in key trade magazines sharing knowledge about the current and forthcoming trends. GARDENING

HERE ARE TEN THINGS TO TACKLE IN YOUR GARDEN THIS AUGUST/SEPTEMBER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. Continue to dead head bedding plants and feed them with a high potash feed such as tomato feed to encourage lots more flowers. If you are going away on holiday a good idea is to move planted pots into a shady spot to help whoever has to water them for you whilst you are away. Tomato plants will be at their most productive now. Make sure you keep removing any side shoots from the plants to channel all the growth into the developing fruit. Feed them with a good liquid feed to swell the fruit. By the August Bank Holiday weekend autumn planted bulbs will be in stock in garden centres and nurseries. Colchicum, autumn flowering crocus and nerine bulbs planted now will bring colour through the season until the end of November. Keep picking runner beans, courgettes and sweet peas to keep them producing through the early autumn. A mulch of compost around the plants will also keep the plants from becoming stressed in hot, dry conditions.

Plant some autumn colour in your borders with late flowering herbaceous plants, such as salvia ‘armistad’, echineacia ‘hot tomato’ or aster ‘Jenny’. All like full sun and are ideal to fill in gaps left by spring flowering plants. Use rootgrow in the planting hole to encourage strong roots.

Greenhouses will need constant ventilation in August and September. A good trick is to remove a pane of glass from the far end at the gable to draw air through the greenhouse by convection. This air movement will help keep plants from suffering from mildew problems, especially cucumber plants which are susceptible. Keep sowing fast producing salad leaves and salad crops such as beetroot and radishes.

In early August sow seeds such as foxgloves, wallflowers and forget-menot and sow the seed in module’s to germinate and plant out in October to flower next late spring. Finally, please remember our wildlife in hot conditions and leave out water for insects, birds and small mammals to drink and bathe in. Please don’t make the water containers too deep and place a stone to the side to allow any animals an escape route if they fall in. IN BRIEF

Bright ideas for summer holidays Little ones can be kept happily occupied during the summer holidays without costing the earth, says Carl Shuttleworth, head of Mill House Pre-School at Giggleswick School. Carl has lots of ideas for simple yet imaginative activities, which children from age two upwards will love doing with parents, siblings, grandparents and friends. Said Carl: “Summer holidays are a great opportunity to spend family time on fun activities with children. Getting outside and the natural world offer plenty of inspiration for cheap and quick art and craft work.”

West Park’s summer soiree Over 60 guests recently joined general manager Nathan George and the team at the West Park Hotel, Harrogate to enjoy an evening of sampling taster dishes and cocktails from the Hotel’s new summer menu and cocktail list. New group chef, Jason Wardill, has been working with West Park’s head chef, Pawel Cekala since February to create and launch the new menu – which offers modern British cuisine with lots of crowd pleasers and a few twists on some classic dishes. Jason said: “I love to use lots of Yorkshire ingredients and the new menus have many local products incorporated into them – from Yorkshire farmed chickens, supplied by Soanes, and our new Wagyu burgers from Warrendale Farms, to some of the most amazing Yorkshire cheeses, including Shepherds Purse Yorkshire Blue, Harrogate Blue and Yorkshire Fettle.” Another new face at the hotel, bar manager, Tom Crawford has also been working hard to develop and refresh the cocktail list using local and traditional flavours.

Health assessments The BMI The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate know that one size doesn’t fit all. It’s why they offer a range of modern and contemporary health assessments, each created for people with different lifestyles and concerns. Depending on the assessment you opt for, they’ll also build in time to look at some things often put aside for another day – like muscle and joint pains, and your emotional health. Whichever you choose, you’ll meet a GP and/or health screening technician at the private hospital in Harrogate. They’ll listen to your concerns and take their time in reviewing your health to pinpoint any lifestyle changes you can make for the better. It’ll give you the information you need to take responsibility for your health and wellbeing – or peace of mind that you’re as fit as a fiddle. To find out more about health assessments at BMI The Duchy Hospital or to make an appointment please call 0800 004600 or visit www.bmihealthcare.co.uk/hospitals/bmi-the-duchyhospital/health-assessment

Historical building shows the way The Chocolate Works Care Village welcomed Caroline Dinenage, MP and Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care together with a host of representatives from City of York Council and the North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group. Care village general manager Sarah Paskett led a tour of the building and lunch was served in the village’s very own pub, the Duke of York. Caroline Dinenage commented: “I was delighted to visit The Chocolate Care Works Village and witness the wonderful way they care for their residents – the beautiful building restoration and daily activities provide an excellent environment for high-quality, patient centred care.” The Chocolate Works Care Village is home for up to 102 residents receiving person-centred residential, nursing and dementia care from an experienced and professional team. Daily life is peppered with opportunities to engage in practical and social activities designed to enhance overall wellbeing with as much or as little support as needed. www.chocolate-works.co.uk
