PROMOTION

Work is currently underway to renovate the empty building on Middlewood Road

ONE OF HILLSBOROUGH’S MOST ICONIC, BUT DERELICT, BUILDINGS IS BEING LOVINGLY RESTORED BY LOCAL ESTATE AGENT MORFITTSMITH, TO SERVE AS THEIR BRAND NEW HUB.

Historic building restored f you’re a Hillsborough local, you’re sure to have had a conversation or two about the eyesore of a building sitting on the corner of Dykes Hall Road and Middlewood Road. It’s been sat unused for years, getting more tired and less attractive by the day. The future of the building has been the subject of speculation for years, as locals wonder if, when and what the building will eventually become, and it seems the wait is over. Local estate agents MorfittSmith had been looking for somewhere with more office space to become their new sales hub, and decided to take on the mammoth task of renovating this historical Hillsborough building. The MorfittSmith team could have chosen to move anywhere in the city, and it may well have been simpler for them to move into a shiny new-build, but their heart is truly in Hillsborough,

I

16 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

so for them there was nothing more important than keeping their business local. Since the overhaul began, questions about the building’s future have flooded workers on the site, and the MorfittSmith team have been buzzing with excitement as they’ve seen work on their new premises progress. They know better than anyone the satisfaction that comes with discovering their new home. With work having been underway over recent months, it seems that by the time we head to print, the MorfittSmith team will have already moved into their new home, and they want nothing more than for you to pop in and share in their excitement. The team at MorfittSmith regard the building not just as a new workspace for them, but something that represents a positive move forward for the area as a whole. Pop in for a cuppa and a chat and share with them any of your own experiences with the building. Throughout the years it has lived many different lives, and the team Middlewood Road in the 1950s would love to learn as much as

possible about their new home. They can’t wait to welcome you all through the doors of their new offices, and I’m sure Hillsborough residents can’t wait to see a bit of new life breathed into Middlewood Road. MorfittSmith are moving to their dream home, if you need help finding yours, get in touch with their brand new sales hub: 67 Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield, S6 4GX Tel: 0114 232 1764 Email: sales@morfittsmith.co.uk

INTERVIEW

Taking sanctuary ARTIST PETE MCKEE AND ARCTIC MONKEYS COVER STAR CHRIS MCCLURE HAVE GOT A LOAD OF THEIR MATES TOGETHER, ALONG WITH SOME SWFC LEGENDS, FOR THEIR NEW PODCAST THE OWL SANCTUARY. BY ASHLEY BIRCH. heffield is famously the ‘City of Sanctuary’, but in the Sheffield S6 postcard of the city it’s more of a sanctuary for Owls, such is the volume of Sheffield Wednesday fans living in the vicinity of Hillsborough stadium. And it’s there, on the bridge outside the South Stand, in the shadow of the giant SWFC emblem, where we meet much-loved Sheffield artist and ukulele enthusiast Pete McKee, and one-time Arctic Monkey cover-star and brother to the Reverend (of Reverend and the Makers), Chris McClure. We’re meeting the two well-known Sheffield faces, and more importantly MASSIVE Wednesday fans, to discuss the pair’s new podcast, The Owl Sanctuary, which we’re told by Pete is a ‘celebration of what it is to be a Wednesdayite’. Along with a production team including Pete’s son Charlie McKee, Mark Herbert and Niall from Warp Films, Chris’s brother Jon and Ed Cousens from Reverend and the Makers, and James O’Hara (The Rocking Group), they have so far released five episodes, in which they have managed to speak to some all-time Wednesday legends, who talk candidly about their time at the club. The podcast launched in December 2018 with a Chris Waddle two-parter, followed by two episodes with John Sheridan and most recently, an episode with another former nineties Wednesday player and local lad, Ritchie Humphreys. Chris said: “Essentially, it’s a load of guys meeting their heroes. Our Jon has delivered some good guests and they’re going to continue. In that way, it’s a bit of a selfish thing because we get to sit

S

18 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

and have a beer with Chris Waddle and John Sheridan. “Once Waddle’s done it, then Sheridan trusts you. We’re not out to snake anyone, we’re not trying to get dirt up on anyone, they can talk about whatever they want, we’re not going to screw someone over. It’s not about that. It’s stuff that we’re massively interested in.” At the time Chris was formulating plans for a podcast, the club was in freefall. A transfer embargo was hanging over it, Dutch manager Jos Luhukay appeared totally out of his depth and had lost the dressing room, so Chris just wanted to try and redress the balance by putting something positive out there, to get away from all the doom and gloom. He said: “I’d become a bit disillusioned and it’d been getting a bit frantic at Wednesday. The fan bickering and inhouse fighting got me thinking about what it’d be like following a football club pre-social media. I was trying to picture what it would be like if you followed a club in the seventies and eighties, and sixties maybe, when it was purely about working, celebrating and talking about the match, going to the match on a Saturday and picking up the local rag. “But now, every aspect of the club and every minute detail is dissected online, which can be quite harrowing really. It’s hard work, I think. So rather than getting into bickering, because I’m not really bothered who does what at a club, I just want them to win and I enjoy going to the pub with my mates and talking about the club and how great it is, my idea was that a podcast would be a good platform for that.” “It was just about doing something

positive really and Pete was big on getting the positive aspect of it, because who are we to be slagging off the innermechanism of how a club works? “The idea would be for someone to tune in and just feel good about following Wednesday. Like wearing a shirt on holiday, it gives you a bit of a march on. We’ve created a space where we can get away from the day-to-day and talk about our hobby.” Chris freely admits that left to his own devices he would ‘make it amateur hour’ so he enlisted the help of his mates and kindred spirits like Pete, who were equally frustrated with the toxic atmosphere around Wednesday’s social media. Pete said: “Social media just opens it up to keyboard warriors and complaining. What we wanted to do was just put a big slice of positivity on stuff. Rather than having a podcast that basically repeated what people were talking about on social media, we’ll just celebrate what it is to be a Wedneasdayite. “It’s a bit of antidote, because when we first set it up we were down the pan as a club, and right up until the first episode we released Wednesday were seven points from relegation. Then, funnily enough, as we released the podcast things started changing, didn’t they? “So maybe we’re responsible. That and where I sit in the ground, that’s part of why we’re doing better, and what breakfast I’ve had, they all play their part! I’m waiting for a letter from Bruce to say, you know, ‘thanks Pete. Thanks for having that breakfast last week when we won.’”

INTERVIEW

Aside from being responsible for Wednesday’s upturn in form under Steve Bruce, the podcast has also received an ‘amazing’ response following its short run, and their favourite guest so far is still to come. “I don’t know about you Chris, but I think having Carlton Palmer for two hours just unloading on us, was the best so far!” says Pete. “Palmer is a man who speaks straight from the heart”, says Chris. “So what you you’re getting in the Palmer episode is no holds barred. It’s like you were there with him. Plus, he’d had eight pints of Guinness by then, which always helps!” Pete of course, as a non-drinker, doesn’t partake in the Guinness, but it sounds like he could do with a bit of Dutch courage before going into the interviews. He said: “For me, I’m star-struck with them all. I’m finding it very hard to relax around them and just be my normal self, I’m just in awe of them all. “It’s because it’s something I can’t relate to. If I see a musician or a fellow artist, I’ve got a relation to them and I can understand their thought process. But I can’t kick a ball to save my life, well I think I can, but I can’t, I’m s**t! So they’re like magicians, and I can’t relate to them on any level. 20 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

“I suppose for us, footballers still have that superstar thing about them,” says Chris. “Mark Herbert (Warp) told me a great story. He went to Cannes film festival and he was on this boat, and James Gandolfini was on it from The Sopranos. He said he was cool, he had a chat with him, no problem. “So he flew back home, got back to Sheffield and went to Domino’s pizza on Woodseats, and Carlton Palmer was in the queue. Well, Mark’s absolutely lost his s**t, totally went to pieces. His wife nearly had to drag him out!” Thankfully, no one has fainted in the presence of a nineties footballer yet, and the five episodes are well worth a listen for any Wednesdayite, but what do Chris and Pete think it actually is to be a Wednesdayite? “For me, I understand if you’re not into football you’d totally think it’s an idiot’s game,” says Chris. “And there is a moronic side to it. But it makes me think about growing up and my mum and dad. My nan tells this story about dancing with the 1935 FA Cup winners under City Hall, and I still see some people from when I was a kid purely because we follow the same football club. “So for me, it runs a lot deeper than just shouting profanities on a Saturday

afternoon. It’s all that family history, that brings my obsession out.” Pete continues: “As humans, we’ve got this inert desire to be part of something, so football is one of those things. I’ve got a love for Sheffield, a passion for the city, so I’m really proud to sing Sheffield’s praises when I’m anywhere else. “Then within that city, there’s a club I can attach my name and my passions to, and that’s Wednesday. It’s part of your life, it’s part of your oxygen. I’m not saying you wake up and you start thinking about Sheffield Wednesday, but it’s part of your soul, it’s another limb. You’re never gonna lose that. You can have certain fashions that you fall out with, and bands you fall out of love with but you’re never ever going to fall out with your football club. “As Chris says, it’s part of your childhood. You fall in love with the club and you’ll do owt for them. We’re an easy sell aren’t we, they’ve got you from birth.” “Let’s hope go up, eh?” says Chris “We will eventually,” says Pete. “Brucey’ll do it. Stay positive!” Follow The Owl Sanctuary on Facebook and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Hoyland Dismantling started out in demolition, dismantling and reclamation, but as time has progressed, so has the business and now they source and supply materials to trade and the general public. Good quality reclaimed materials have become increasingly hard to source, and they have looked down new avenues. This has led to them supplying a lot of new materials, so more than 75 per cent of what they sell is new. They source products not just in the UK, but from all over the world, and are constantly looking at new products and suppliers to ensure they can offer a wide range of good quality products at very competitive prices. Discover a ‘true heart of the home’ KITCHENS BY ANTONY HANCOCK – YEAR AFTER YEAR AND STILL GOING STRONG. hy pay showroom prices? In a time when kitchen and bedroom showrooms come and go it is comforting to see a local company that is still thriving after more than two decades in business. Antony Hancock has neither a flash showroom or a complicated website, yet he and his colleagues are celebrating another successful year. They don’t rely on expensive advertising campaigns or high pressure salesmen or even have catchy slogans painted down the sides of their vans. This company simply doesn’t have to; personal recommendation rapidly spreads the word about the quality and value for money of the kitchens, bedrooms and studies it designs and installs. Now, in recognition of this, Antony Hancock would like to thank all their customers for their business and for their invaluable “word of mouth recommendations”. Quality of service and attention to detail are paramount with this team of professionals. A fact not lost on customers is that with no showroom rental costs, sales commissions and other overheads to pay for, genuine savings really can be made.

W

28 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Antony Hancock’s vast majority of kitchens, bedrooms and studies have been installed in homes both large and small in Sheffield and North Derbyshire. Indeed, whether you have a modest kitchen that needs redesigning to maximise space or a spectacular room to transform into a real ‘heart of the home’, Antony and his colleagues are confident they can offer full design, installation and complete project management at a price other companies cannot match. Add to that their friendly reputation and attention to detail and there is no wonder this company is thriving in such a demanding market. Antony Hancock caters for all tastes and budgets, from the classic and traditional to the innovative and highly original. Be it ‘in frame painted’, modern gloss or even more contemporary styles they do them all, including granite worktops and appliances, all at simply unbeatable prices. Antony is happy to sit down and talk to families and explain how best to make the most of their new kitchen or bedroom. Then with all his years of design experience a full and complete set of drawings, including ‘true artists impressions’ (not just a ten-minute CAD

illustration) will be created, showing exactly how the finished room will look. The service is completely free of charge and with absolutely no obligation. As Antony puts it: “A good kitchen is a combination of imagination, design, and sense of individuality and our attention to detail really can make all the difference.” Once given the go ahead to do the job, Antony and his colleagues will then (if the client wishes) completely take care of everything, including any electrical work, plumbing or plastering etc. Adds Antony: “We really are grateful to all the people who pass on our name to their friends and family, it’s like having our own sales team, we are proud to be celebrating a business built solely on recommendations.” Kitchens by Antony Hancock Call 0114 234 8791 www.antonyhancock.co.uk

EASTER COMPETITION

Spring inspiration AFTER BUDDING ARTISTS WERE INVITED TO ADD A SPLASH OF COLOUR TO OUR EASTER MAGAZINE, BEV COUKHAM, OF HILLSBOROUGH’S CURO GALLERY, HAS PICKED A WINNER... he month of April means something different to everyone. For some it’s the thought of April showers and spring sunshine, for others it’s the joy of a few extra days off work, and for many – it’s all about Easter. Back in December 2017, we asked pupils from primary schools in S6 to design a Sixer cover with a festive theme and a pop of colour. Maverick Kelley was crowned the winner, and as well as giving Sixer a Christmassy cover, his work was also framed and displayed in the window of Middlewood Road’s Curo Gallery to get everyone in the festive spirit. With Easter just around the corner, we thought we’d ask the little ones of Sixerland to put their creative hats on once again, this time asking all would-be young artists to put together a seasonal Easter painting. Spring has finally sprung, and we asked the entrants to use their imaginations, inviting them to be creative and put anything together from a springtime landscape to an Easter bunny or some spring chicks. Once again, Sixer joined forces with

Curo Gallery owner Bev Coukham to decide who would be the winner of our Easter painting competition, and which lucky boy or girl would get to have their painting displayed in the gallery window, as well as have their smiling face in the pages of this month’s Sixer magazine. We had lots of lovely entries posted out to us at the Sixer office, and some even handdelivered, and as we took the wonderful works of art over to Bev at Curo Gallery, we knew she had a tough task ahead of her. “Art doesn’t necessarily have to look perfect. It should be about the passion and enjoyment you get out of it, and those two things come across in all of these pictures,” said Bev. After much consideration, it was 11-year-old Olivia Coles who was crowned the winner for her spring-inspired painting of lovebirds perched on a blossom tree. “It’s very clever,” said Bev. “She’s chosen lovely blossoms for spring, and it’s romantic with the lovebirds. She has used quite advanced techniques, and I really like the added touch of glitter.” >>>

EASTER COMPETITION

Olivia, sister Frances, mum Nicola and Bev Coukham of Curo Gallery

Before her painting could appear in the window of Curo Gallery, it was up to Olivia to choose a bespoke frame for the winning picture to be displayed in, so she was invited to the gallery along with her mother Nicola and sister Frances (whose wonderful drawing is also featured in this month’s Sixer). Olivia selected the colours ‘Sunset Pink’ and ‘Parchment’ for her mounts,

which gorgeously complemented the colours in her painting. She also chose a white frame to match the interiors of her bedroom when she takes the painting back home, and art glass so clear that everyone will be able to see Olivia’s wonderful work. Clearly proud of her painting, Olivia couldn’t stop smiling, and told us that “it’s just what came into my head”. Her mother Nicola said: “She Bev choosing a winner draws all the time, she loves nature, birds and animals and we were talking about the changing weather and the trees, and she decided that’s what she’d like to paint.” Olivia is in Y7, and loves the freedom that comes with drawing and

painting in art lessons at school. Since primary school Olivia has always been encouraged by her art teachers to pursue her passion, and we’re glad that we get to feature her work before she turns her talent into a career and makes it big in the art world. This isn’t the first time Olivia has won a competition for her art. You might recognise Olivia from Sixer December 2017, when she won Bradfield Parish Council’s annual Christmas card competition for her drawing of Luna the reindeer. Back then, Olivia’s mum told us about her love for art and nature, and it’s clear that nothing has changed, and her talents have only improved. The Sixer team would like to thank all the boys and girls who sent in their fantastic pictures, and we’re sure our readers will join us in congratulating Olivia on her winning piece. To see the winning picture in the frame chosen by Olivia, visit the Curo Gallery on Middlewood Road. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 35

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Going loco ARE YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH THIS MONTH’S PICTURES FROM THE PAST?

e’re letting the train take the strain in this month’s nostalgia section as we look back at local railway stations from before and after the age of the steam engine. The low price of coal after World War Two meant steam engines were still very much in their prime. But the price of oil started to fall in the 1960s and diesel engines were deemed to be faster, easier to maintain and cleaner. On 12 August 1968, British railways imposed a ban on all mainline steam traffic, though there were still some heritage services running, and some

W

locomotives were used in industry until the 1980s. The ban on steam was lifted in 1971, paving the way for the many heritage specials now operating on the railways. So, does this trio of images spark any memories? Let us know. Meanwhile, last month’s quartet of photographs were all about Oughtibridge and they were provided by our old friend Barry Couldwell. Did you recognise the village railway station, the main road, the old school at Onesacre and a line-up of the local football team from the 1950s?

Write and send your photos to: Do You Remember?, Sixer, RMC Media, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield, S8 0XF. Alternatively, you can email your answer to chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk

Good, solid advice CATERING TO BOTH TRADE CUSTOMERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC, CARRACKS IS A ONE-STOPSHOP FOR ALL YOUR PAINTING AND DECORATING NEEDS.

Simon Bradbury and new member, Jake Crutchley

ome businesses seem to stand the test of time and one that continues to go from strength to strength is Carracks Wallpaper & Paint in the heart of the busy, bustling Crookes shopping district. The business was launched in 1947 and, as many Sheffield folk know, the Carracks family includes local music legend Paul, whose parents Ben and Joan were the original owners. Simon Bradbury worked in the shop for 15 years alongside Paul’s brother John before taking over the business a couple of years ago. But while the Carrack family link may have gone, Simon has ensured the working practices that made the original shop an instant success remain unchanged. As a decorator who has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years, Simon has a wealth of knowledge to supply paints,

S

wallpapers, brushes and other accessories, such as fillers and pastes, to both trade customers and the general public. “Many people come in for some good solid advice,” confirms Simon. “Customers come to us because we provide the right products and a personal service. We can get hold of most brands and they are discounted, so we are also cheaper than a lot of other paint and wallpaper stores.” Working alongside Simon is the newest member of the Carracks team, local lad Jake Crutchley. Jake came to the shop after receiving a solid grounding in the business during a three-and-a-half year spell working for Johnstone’s Paints. “This is a small shop but it’s really busy,” he says. “People pop in all the time and it’s great to have a chat with the customers and help them make the right choices.” Whether you are a home owner just touching up one room or a professional painter and decorator, Carracks is the one-stop-shop for all your trade and retail needs. Their top-quality paint brands include Dulux, Heritage, Johnstone’s and popular chalk paint, Rust-oleum, whilst their brush and tool brands include Harris and Purdy. If you need a little inspiration, they have hundreds of wallpaper books for you to leaf through and even provide

a colour matching service – just bring in the shade you want matching up and Carracks will do the rest. And though Carracks continues to give the same good old fashioned friendly service and wide range of paints and wallpapers it always has, Simon is bringing the business firmly into the 21st century. It may look like a modestly-sized shop on the outside but, as two terrace houses put together, Carracks has many nooks and crannies full of paints and products to discover. If you’ve never had a peek inside the store, you’ll be amazed. ost of us go about our daily lives hoping we will never have to confront a violent situation. But when Sheffield dental nurse Nicola Roberts witnessed a serious assault back in 2001, her first instinct was to step in, using her very basic first aid skills to provide help and comfort. Her second instinct was that she needed to learn more, so if it happened again she could do more. This led to her contacting her local branch of St John Ambulance (SJA). She qualified as a first aider in 2003 and has been there ever since. Nicola is now an advanced first aider which means she is qualified to handle a variety of casualty situations including

M

giving oxygen, pain relief gas, fitting spinal collars and fracture splints for broken arms and legs. She is also part of a medical response team which means she is asked to look after people at music concerts and festivals and sports events across the country. In recent years she’s been asked to attend major events such as the London Marathon and Kendal Calling. But sometimes it’s more about providing words of comfort to people in stressful situations, such as the football match she attended on behalf of SJA between Barnsley and Burton Albion in September last year. The match was abandoned minutes before the kick-off when one of the

match day volunteers, Barnsley man Steve Croft, suffered a heart attack. With medical staff from both clubs and paramedics quickly on the scene, and an air ambulance landing on the pitch, Nicola sought out the stricken man’s family who she knew would be watching with mounting alarm. “I could see CPR being performed on the edge of the pitch and was conscious of what the family most be going through, seeing that happen to a loved one. I requested permission from the duty officer to sit with the family and made sure they were well cared for and had their needs dealt with,” Nicola recalls. “Speaking to the family in a situation

like that you can never say it’s going to be OK because you just don’t know. What you can do is reassure them that their loved one is in safe hands and receiving prompt treatment.” Thankfully this story has a happy ending. Five months later the abandoned fixture was replayed and Nicola was part of a group being led out onto the pitch by Mr Croft, now fully recovered, to warm applause from all sides of the Oakwell stadium. Fortunately Nicola’s regular attendances at events across South Yorkshire and beyond, from football matches to sports days to events such as Tramlines in Hillsborough Park, tend to be more routine. But whether it’s a sticking plaster on a cut, dealing with emotional stress from being part of a big crowd, or performing CPR and using a defibrillator, Nicola and thousands of St John Ambulance volunteers like her are ready to step in and save the day.

Equally important is Nicola’s role within SJA training cadets (aged ten to 17 years) and badgers (seven to ten). “It’s very rewarding and great to see new cadets and badgers coming through,” she says. We have a steady stream of youngsters coming forward who are eager to learn, they love first aid. But it’s not just that, it is the life skills for when they go off to university or do whatever they want to do as an adult. “It’s great to see them grow up and it makes us very proud as a team and it makes me very proud as a unit manager. “I was an adult joiner and if I had not been looked after and nurtured within the unit and encouraged by my peers I wouldn’t be here now. “It is a big privilege to help save someone’s life and help treat the injured because they are very vulnerable. These are people who put their lives in your hands.”

St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading first aid charity Every year, more than 500,000 people learn how to save a life through its training programmes, including hundreds of thousands of young people. SJA volunteers provide first aid in their communities, keeping people safe at events, and working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls. They are also always campaigning to raise awareness of first aid and directly educate the public. St John Ambulance is calling for adult volunteers to join so more young people in Sheffield can benefit from its activities. Working with badgers and cadets aged seven to 17, volunteers are given full training and the opportunity to become leaders. Start of a new era AFTER OVER 90 YEARS IN BUSINESS, A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS FOR GREAVES POWDER COATING, WHERE HIGH STANDARDS AND A CONSISTENT QUALITY OF WORK REMAIN. elham Island is quickly becoming the place to be in Sheffield, with bars, restaurants and breweries seeming to pop up left right and centre. While Kelham is growing day by day, and by some is seen to be representing the future of Sheffield, the area also has real ties to the city’s past. An industrial hub, Kelham Island has been home to factories big and small over the years, and today it’s where Greaves Powder Coating are making their mark on the city. Greaves’ Hicks Street location may not be on your regular route through Kelham Island, but you’ll almost definitely have seen their work while out and about, as they coat everything from magnets, light fittings and bike frames to coating larger items for businesses in the

K

gas and petrol, car and theatre industries. Ever pressed a button before crossing the road? They probably coated that too. You might also recognise the Greaves name itself, as though it’s functioned under various different guises and trading names over the years, it has, until now, been a business firmly in the hands of the Greaves family, with Michael Greaves and his wife Judith being the last in the bloodline to run the company. Started in 1923 by Michael’s grandfather, Greaves was not always a powder coating company. After starting out by delivering radiator diffusers for the railway by hand, the business went on to do any and everything from wet painting and lacquering to stove enamelling before it became what we know it as today. Michael took over the business in

1974, and throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties business was booming, and there were three Greaves sites, requiring 48 members of staff to keep everything running smoothly. The changing climate of the industry and the changes that the economy has seen over the years has meant that the company has gone down in size, but that hasn’t changed the high standard and consistent quality of the work that the team at Greaves Powder Coating do. If anything, the fact that today the business is running with just five members of staff, especially considering the hands on nature of the job, is a real testament to the team. The hard work is set to continue, as Greaves Powder Coating is changing hands for the first time in over 40 years. Thursday 7 February saw Michael and his wife Judith pass the business over to long-time colleagues and friends, Tony and Jackie Callaghan. “They’ve not only worked for us but they’ve worked alongside us for all these years,” says Michael, telling us that they put full trust in the couple to take good care of their family business. The pair have both worked for the

company since the mid-eighties, and it was actually at Greaves that the couple met before later becoming husband and wife. Both Tony and Jackie have left and come back to the business a few times, but home is where the heart is, and now as the owners of Greaves Powder Coating, they’re definitely here to stay. Though the couple do not share the Greaves name, it’s Greaves that the business will stay, as years and years of hard work and dedication have meant that people have come to know the quality of work they’ll receive when they choose to do business with this local company. And if you’ve come to know the Greaves’ over the years, don’t worry as they’re not disappearing just yet. Though Tony and Jackie will be overseeing the business from now on, Michael will still be popping in to lend a helping hand and ensure the smooth handover of the business, while Judith will continue to run the admin side of things, which she’s always done from her home office. So, whether you’re a business looking to choose a local company for your powder coating needs, or you’re an individual who wants guaranteed quality, get in touch with Greaves so they can show you how

they’ve remained a successful Sheffield business for over 90 years. Greaves Powder Coating 16-18 Hicks Street, Sheffield, S3 8BL Tel: 0114 276 3383 Email: info@greavespowdercoating.co.uk www.greavespowdercoating.co.uk

Amanda with Percy the Pointer

Every dog has its day HAVING BEEN RESCUED FROM THE STREETS OF CYPRUS BY WORRALL DOG LOVER AMANDA BELL, PERCY THE POINTER IS NOW BASKING IN THE SPOTLIGHT OF BEING CROWNED FAMILY CROSSBREED OF THE YEAR AT SCRUFFTS. t’s been an incredible journey for Percy the cross-breed pointer, from being shot and left for dead on the streets of Cyprus to basking in the spotlight of the winners’ podium at Crufts, the world’s greatest dog show. When dog lover Amanda Bell and her father Michael from Worrall first learned about Percy’s plight on the Mediterranean island he was in a tragic state. He’d been shot several times, his kidneys were failing and he was unable to stand before being picked up by a dog rescue organisation called Dali. Amanda read about Percy on Facebook and immediately made contact with an offer of help. What happened next is nothing short of a miracle. In Percy’s case it seems the old cliché is true... every dog has its day. Amanda, who runs a recruitment agency in Sheffield called Chef Results, recalls: “He was only nine kilos when

I

they found him and they did not know whether he would have the strength to survive, but I said if he became strong enough to fly I’d take him. “Fortunately they were able to build up his strength, he put on weight and was 16 kilos when he came to us in June last year. “He’s 23 kilos now and is fully recovered, he’s a very healthy and happy dog.” But while the physical wounds have healed, Amanda found there were still some psychological barriers to overcome before Percy could put his ordeal behind him. “I have five dogs at home and when Percy came I put him in the garden and let him meet the others one at a time. He was fine with other dogs and OK in the house but he did not want to go beyond the garden gate. “I spent many hours sat on the kerb with him, trying to get him to come for a walk. But if any other person came

he’d run and hide in the bushes at the far end of the garden. “But in time he got over it and now, if we have a visitor, he’ll run up to them and make a fuss of them. He’s a completely different dog.” Amanda has always loved dogs and had her first pet at the age of seven. She now shows dog regularly all over the country, but she had great misgivings about how Percy would react under the spotlight in the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year competition. Percy was one of six finalists, having won his heat in Scotland last August and then a semi-final in London in October. The Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year competition caters exclusively for crossbreeds, dogs whose parents are of two different breeds or a mixture of several breeds. And when it came to the big moment at the grand final at the National Exhibition Centre, it transpired that Percy was a natural. “I was so worried about Crufts because all the cameras would be on him and I just did not know how he’d react,” says Amanda. “But he wagged his tail all the time and sat there and let the judge, Michael Ball, make a big fuss of him for Channel Four. Percy was a lot calmer than I was!” It certainly was a long way from the streets of Cyprus where sadly Percy’s case was not an isolated one. There are

many strays and when dogs are used for hunting they can be regarded as surplus to requirements, rather than much-loved pets, at the end of the season. But for Percy the good life awaits. Amanda has decided to retire him from future shows. “Daft as it sounds, I don’t think I can take him to the little shows now he has won the big one. “We might see how he gets on at a few dog agility events. We’ll go just for fun, and if he likes it we’ll enter him in competitions.” So Percy’s days in the show ring may not be quite over after all.

Family Law THE BREAKDOWN OF A RELATIONSHIP IS A CHALLENGING TIME FOR FAMILIES. BELOW IS JUST SOME OF THE SCENARIOS WE FREQUENTLY SEE IN THE FAMILY TEAM AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH.

The Sheffield Family Law team

Q. I have been married for 20 years. My husband has worked full time throughout our marriage. I have stayed at home to care for our three children. My husband told me that I won’t get anything if we divorce. Is he right?

A. When a couple divorce, and a court is asked to decide how the finances are split, it will consider all of the circumstances with first consideration being given to the welfare of children under the age of 18. The court will try to ensure that both parties can be housed but priority may be given to housing you and the children who live with you. The court has wide ranging powers including ordering the sale of your home, the transfer of your home to one of you, payment of cash lump sums, periodical payments (“maintenance”) and sharing pensions. In certain circumstances the court may make an order that your home can’t be sold until your youngest child is 18 years old. Your contribution in caring

for the children is usually seen as equal to your husband’s contribution of working and bringing in money. Q. My ex has told me she is going to take our two young children on holiday to America. She won’t give me any details of their holiday. I am worried in case an emergency arises. She says I can’t stop her taking the children.

A. If you don’t agree with your ex taking the children on holiday or without sharing details of the trip, you can apply to the family court for an order that your ex provides the information or is prevented from taking the children abroad (a Prohibited Steps Order). Your ex may apply to the court for permission to take the children on holiday (a Specific Issue Order). The court will decide whether or not to grant the applications, with consideration being given to what is in the children’s best interests.

Q. My husband and I are getting divorced and we have sorted out the finances ourselves. We typed up our agreement and signed it. Is this enforceable?

A. The agreement you have made will not be binding and enforceable unless it is made into a Court Order. You should apply to Court for an order made by consent .The court has the power to decide whether to make your agreement set out in the order binding. It will usually do so if it considers that the agreement is fair and reasonable. A solicitor can assist you with the preparation of a Consent order.

COMMUNITY

Community helping community RHIANA HUGHES CHATS TO CHRIS HARDY ABOUT THE IMPORTANT ROLE SHEFFIELD S6 FOODBANKS HAS IN THE LOCAL AREA. e’ve all noticed trollies dressed up as foodbank collection bins while out doing the weekly shop at our local supermarkets, but how often do we take the time to think about where the items we donate end up? While many of us are lucky enough to be able to just nip to the shop whenever we feel that familiar pang of hunger, there are people all around us who don’t enjoy that luxury, and some of them are closer to home than we may at first assume. Foodbanks are a vital part of each and every community, and we spoke to Chris Hardy at one of four Sheffield S6

W

62 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Foodbanks about why they’re so important, and to find out how we can all do our bit to help. “Most people are only a payday away from using a foodbank,” Chris tells us. “It’s important that people understand that it’s people from all walks of life being affected – hunger doesn’t discriminate, and when you donate to a foodbank, it could be your own neighbour you’re helping.” Every day, people in the UK are going hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Whatever the reason for an empty cupboard, in this

day and age there should be no reason for anyone to go hungry. The S6 Foodbank has four different sites across Sheffield, and between them they’re open four days a week, providing three days’ emergency food and support to the local people who come to them in a crisis. Over 90 per cent of the food that comes in and out of the foodbanks has been donated by the public, and it’s important that we all do what we can to help within our communities. There are plenty of ways to donate food to the S6 Foodbank; from dropping donations into the bins located in local Tesco, Asda and Morrison’s supermarkets to taking

COMMUNITY

donations directly to the foodbanks. If you don’t have the time or means to drop donations off, you can even give Chris a call to arrange a mutually convenient time and place to have your donations collected. Food donated to the S6 Foodbank must be nonperishable, and typical food parcels include; breakfast cereals, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, tinned beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, tea or coffee, sugar, biscuits and snacks. While these staple products are of course always appreciated, there are some that the foodbank receives more than others. Walking into the foodbank stock room, you’ll probably never have seen so many tins of beans in your life, but items like pasta, tea, coffee, UHT milk and fruit juice are things that often get overlooked, and this is when monetary donations come in handy. “We really appreciate when people donate money, as it means we can buy the things that don’t get donated as much”, says Chris. Though many of the food parcels handed out will look like this, the S6 Foodbank are aware that not all people share the same dietary requirements, and they adapt parcels to meet the needs of individuals, providing people with gluten free, halal and vegetarian parcels where needed. And though it is primarily food passed out by the volunteers, the S6 Foodbank also welcomes donations of other items, especially hygiene products. Feminine products are always available at the foodbank, but items such as shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and razors are incredibly important. Chris tells us how people often come to the foodbank with job interviews lined up, but they’ve found themselves unable to afford the hygiene products necessary to get themselves ready, or even the right clothes to wear for the day. The foodbank has a clothes bank too, and the more we spoke with Chris, the more we understood just how much the S6 Foodbank helps people not only in their time of need, but how they help them to get out of crisis altogether. The S6 Foodbank has over 110 volunteers across its four sites, and each of them are specially trained not only when

it comes to organising food parcels, but also to provide information about local services and offering practical guidance to give people a helping hand out of poverty. The foodbank runs citizens advice clinics, job clubs and has debt councillors join sessions to talk to people about how best to manage their circumstances. It’s about giving people self-confidence too. People walk into the foodbank often feeling at their lowest point, so volunteers take it upon themselves to ensure that people view their current situations as nothing more than just temporary. By even coming to the foodbank, they’ve displayed a sense of confidence and bravery that they may not have recognised within themselves. “We want to offer people a sense of dignity,” says Chris. “We want to show people love, have a chat and a cuppa and get to know them.” At the S6 Foodbank it’s all about “community helping community,” says Chris. And the foodbank has seen an increase in local support lately, from both local residents and local businesses.

Businesses such as Kelham’s Cutlery Works and Riverside pub, Hendersons and Sheffield Wednesday have not only raised funds for the foodbank, but they’ve also raised all-important awareness for the organisation. Scale of colour IN THE SECOND PART OF OUR ‘DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE’ WE EXPLORE THE IMPORTANCE OF COLOUR, OR LACK OF IT, WHEN CHOOSING A DIAMOND. iamonds are famous for their beautiful colourless appearance, but almost all have at least a hint of yellow or brown. Often imperceptible to the untrained eye, this can make a significant difference to price. To make things easier, diamonds are graded using a scale created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This uses letters to indicate the grade, beginning at ‘D’ denoting a complete absence of colour and continuing through the alphabet as colour increases. Diamonds graded from ‘D’ to ‘F’ are regarded as colourless, those from ‘G’ to ‘J’ near colourless. They should appear colourless, or nearly so, when viewed face-up. Stones with grades from ‘K’ downwards Facing up – different views of have more obvious the same diamond hints of colour, which increase as you progress down the scale. Diamonds are graded by comparison with master stones of known colour. Grading takes place under strictly controlled conditions; lighting and the background the stones are being viewed against is always identical. The diamond

D

is placed face down and the grader views it from the side where the maximum colour should be seen. We often describe diamonds as ‘facing up well’. This means that they appear ‘whiter’ when viewed from the top than their grade suggests (see the two images of the solitaire ring). This is due to the way the diamond interacts with light, the bright reflections the stone produces and the angle of viewing minimising the amount of colour seen. Another factor can be the fluorescent properties of the stone. Fluorescent materials emit a visible glow under ultraviolet light. Diamonds have variable fluorescence; some are inert while others have a very bright glow, commonly blue but sometimes other colours (see the two images of the same pendant). Those with strong fluorescence may also appear ‘whiter’ in daylight. Fluorescence can also cause a hazy appearance, so is not always an advantage, but a little can sometimes give a boost to the colour. A diamond’s certificate should state how strong the stone’s fluorescence is, but the impact

can only be seen by looking at the stone. It is important to consider that everyone perceives colour differently; some eyes are more sensitive than others. Some people notice colour in a diamond that others observe as colourless. This is one of the reasons that it is always a good idea to view a diamond in person rather than relying on a certificate. What you see is the crucial thing. Our showroom is staffed by experienced jewellers, including several qualified diamond graders. We are always happy to discuss diamond grading with you and answer any questions you have about diamonds. FIONA WESTNEY IS CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF WORKING AT ROBERT D SALONS – AND HAS A VERY SPECIAL OFFER TO MARK THE OCCASION. aving worked as a beauty therapist since leaving college, this year marks Fiona Westney’s tenth year at Robert D Salons, and she wants you to help her celebrate the milestone. Fiona had considered embarking upon a few different careers throughout her time at school, ranging from childcare to physiotherapy, but when her school hosted a careers day it was beauty therapy that caught her eye, and she’s never looked back since. After spending two years studying at college, Fiona obtained City & Guilds Level 2 and 3 Beauty qualifications. Following this, she went on to work at what was then Body and Sole, just a couple of doors down from where Robert D Salons is today. While at Body and Sole, Fiona worked closely with Kerrie (chiropodist and beauty therapist) and Hilary (nail technician), and she credits them with “helping every step of the way” throughout her career. When Kerrie and Hilary made the short move down the road to Robert D Salons in 2009, Fiona went with them, and the years of experience and the wonderful clients she’s worked with ever since have shown her that the move was the right choice for everyone. “I've got really lovely, loyal clients, a few from when I first started at Body and

Sole, the rest just found me here at Robert D Salons and have been coming to me ever since. They’re more like friends than clients now,” says Fiona. Eighteen months ago, Fiona welcomed her son into the world, and took some time off to spend quality time with her little boy. Now back working part-time, Fiona is eternally grateful for the kindness and patience of her customers, who’ve stayed loyal to her throughout her break from work. Not only does this show that Fiona has a great set of clients, but that her services are well worth the wait. A qualified beauty therapist, Fiona can do anything and everything, with her treatments ranging from manicures and pedicures to eye treatments, threading, waxing, facials and massages. Over the years, Fiona has also been on

a number of beauty therapy courses, learning how to perfect beauty treatments such as threading and gel polish application, and her recent eyelash lift course has seen her clients achieve great results. She has also achieved a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification. Fiona is now back at the salon working part-time on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and to celebrate a decade at Robert D Salons, she’s decided to run a special offer to say thank you for all of the support she’s received over the years. When you book any Tropic facial, you’ll receive ten per cent off, so get in touch with Fiona now to take advantage of this wonderful offer and get your skin ready for summer. EATING OUT

Tasted the Med NEOMED BRINGS DISHES FROM ALL COASTLINES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN TO STOCKSBRIDGE, WRITES ASHLEY BIRCH. hen thinking of the city’s best restaurants, you’d be forgiven for not automatically thinking of North Sheffield’s Fox Valley, but with the arrival of a host of new restaurants, and more on the way, it’s fast becoming worth the journey out to the Sheffield suburb. Chief among this wave of new foodie venues is Neomed, a Mediterranean restaurant bringing dishes from all coastlines of the Med to Stocksbridge locals. Opening back in November, the restaurant has become incredibly popular in a short space of time, even surpassing co-owner and chef Alessandro Vergine’s expectations, so we thought we better go along and see what all this fuss is about. The restaurant is tucked away on Fox Valley Way, on the right hand side as you make your way in to the retail park from the Manchester Road entrance, giving it a relaxed atmosphere, set back from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre. We’re greeted on the ground floor entrance by Alessandro, who introduces us to our server Claire. Claire is chatty and friendly and has plenty of knowledge and recommendations when it comes to the menu, and spending

W

78 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

plenty of time with us without being overbearing. Before that though, she takes us upstairs, giving us chance to have a nosey round at the restaurant’s contemporary interior. It’s definitely still got a homely and rustic vibe, but the modern details give it a suitably ‘posh’ feel if you’re after an evening out at a fancy restaurant. But what about the food itself? Well, I’m vegan, so I was pleasantly surprised by the number of options on offer. The menu even has a vegan section, and I order the dolmades for starter, followed by Lahmajoun, a type of pizza topped with Mediterranean vegetables, cashew nuts and parsley. The menu is scattered with Arabic treats and exotic twists like this, as well as the expected pastas, pizzas and Greek and Cypriot classics. My dinner guest orders the Gambas Pil Pil and the Spaghetti Porto Cesareo. My starter of Greek vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs is fantastic, but the star of the show here is the Lahmajoun, and more specifically the zaatar dipping sauce that accompanies the dish and is bursting with flavour from oregano, cumin and sumac.

Equally, the prawn starter is met with plenty of satisfactory noises from across the table and the spaghetti, which Alessandro explains comes with a more traditional, drier sauce, is packed with little morsels of the sea. It’s wolfed down with gusto and I think she would have taken a doggy bag home if she could! As it’s still only lunchtime, we were left comfortably full from our trip around this Mediterranean feast, so we leave the dessert menu to one side on this occasion, but if you are feeling indulgent there’s a glass case full of cakes downstairs to suit anyone’s sweet tooth. As we leave, with bellies full and tastebuds rattled, we’re reminded we’re actually in Stocksbridge and haven’t been swept off to some far flung corner of the Med. Who needs sunshine, anyway? Nemoed Unit B5, Fox Valley Way, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, S36 2AB

Happy environment CONFIDENT CHILDREN DEVELOP AN ENTHUSIASM FOR LEARNING AT CORNER HOUSE NURSERY.

s countless youngsters of all ages will happily confirm, Corner House Nursery on Wadsley Lane is a local family business that has really has stood the test of time. Started in a former doctor’s surgery by Lynne Shaw 25 years ago, it was originally quite a small nursery with 25 places for youngsters aged from two years upwards. Fast forward to the current day and Lynne’s daughter Faye Wagstaffe is the business manager of a bustling, successful nursery that is alive with the happy chatter and babble of youngsters aged from six months to pre-school age. With lots of space in the classrooms and three fantastic outdoor play areas, all securely within the grounds of the nursery, it’s the ideal setting for youngsters to interact, learning through play and preparing for school. There are now 127 places in the nursery with two baby rooms and a large extension for three-year-olds. The last building work was completed five years ago (Faye’s past career as an architect came in handy there) so the venue has a very settled, comfortable feel. “We couldn’t expand any more without encroaching on our outdoor

A

84 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

play areas, and we’d never do that because they are quite a rarity among other nurseries in the area and a real asset to the nursery,” says Faye. But while children come for a few years and then move on to ‘big school’, parents can be reassured that the staff have between them racked up enough time to qualify for several long-service awards! “Our core management and supervisor team is really strong, our supervisors all joined Corner House Nursery as teenage apprentices and have now been with us for ten years plus,” says Faye. The 43-strong staff includes child care manager Samantha, who started working for Faye’s mum 28 years ago when she started a small city centre nursery, and came with her to be one of the founders of Corner House Nursery. Assistant manager Lynne is a relative ‘newbie’ having been there for just 22 years. “Quite a few of the original children, who came when the nursery first started, are now bringing their own children. It might make us feel old but it’s great for the nursery,” says Faye with a smile. One new member of the team is head chef Peter. He has introduced new

menus with everything cooked from scratch (apart from the odd fish finger or biscuit), so parents can rest assured their little ones are enjoying delicious, healthy, fresh-cooked meals every day. There are still some places available for 30 hours of funding in the Corner House Nursery’s pre-school rooms and now Faye’s own children Connie (aged four) and Sidney (two) have enrolled, she is able to see at first hand (and a working mum herself) the benefits that time spent here brings to children of all ages. “Activities here have changed dramatically over the last 25 years as the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) guidelines have altered. But what hasn’t changed is our commitment to children’s education and wellbeing,” she says. “There’s a lot more emphasis on getting children ‘school ready’, as they start much younger now. It’s not so much about whether they can write their name or count to ten, it’s about helping them to be confident and promoting an enthusiasm for learning.” Corner House Nursery 130 Wadlsey Lane, Sheffield, S6 4ED Tel: 0114 233 3349 www.cornerhousenursery.org

Sheffield College musical theatre degree students rehearse Little Women: The Broadway Musical

Musical theatre degree students stage Little Women Sheffield College performing arts students are staging a timeless and captivating musical as part of their degree course. A cast of 11 students will perform Little Women – The Broadway Musical in the drama theatre at the College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street. The show is based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, which follows the adventures of Jo March and her three sisters during the American civil war. Little Women explores the themes of personal discovery, heartache, hope and love and will be performed by Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre students. Caroline Fojut, Performing Arts Lecturer, The Sheffield College, said: “Little Women is a timeless and captivating story that embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night of laughter and tears. “It’s fantastic that all of our degree students have the opportunity to frequently perform in our purpose-built theatre, which offers them valuable experience of professional working practices. I’m really proud of the professional attitude and skills they have developed, which will help them go further in their careers.” Little Women – The Broadway Musical takes place on Wednesday, April 17 and Thursday, 18 April at 7pm. For more information, email info@sheffcol.ac.uk or call 0114 260 2600.

Tree Planting day Children from Woodlands Nursery took the classroom outdoors where they planted free trees from the Woodland Trust. The nursery successfully applied for a pack of wildlife and working wood trees from the Trust. The Woodland Trust’s Schools and Community Engagement Manager Karen Letten said: “Trees create inspiring learning spaces – natural, sustainable, and dynamic outdoor classrooms where pupils can mix mud with maths and spades with science while connecting with nature and having fun. It’s these lessons that the children will remember well into adulthood.” Woodland Trust commissioned research shows that children and parents who plant trees felt that they were ‘doing their bit’ to help the environment and remember it as a significant experience. Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is supporting the Trust to deliver 400,000 trees for state-funded primary schools and nurseries in England over four years. Anete Zarina, outdoor coordinator at Woodlands Nursery, said: “Our tree planting day was a success. So far together with parents and grandparents we have planted 97 trees and we have 100 more to go!” 88 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Being a loser makes Harriet a winner! Being the best at losing wouldn’t normally help you to scoop an award – yet one lady from Grenoside, Sheffield has done just that after being named the city’s ‘Greatest Loser’ 2019. That’s because Harriet before ...and after Harriet Steers has lost a lifechanging 5st 1.5lbs to take the title, which is awarded to the member of the Grenoside Slimming World group who has lost the most weight, and feels great as a result. Harriet says: “I’ve tried losing weight so many times over the years, but doing it with Slimming World was the best decision I’ve ever made. For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.” She joined the Grenoside group, which is run by Julie Smith, in July 2018 and has not only seen a change in the mirror but her health has improved too. She now loves eating family favourites made a healthier way and says she couldn’t have done it without the support of the new friends she’s made in group.
