Pick your own THERE’S A TREE WITH YOUR NAME ON IT... AT THE SHEFFIELD CHRISTMAS TREE COMPANY AT COW GAP FARM. o back in 2006 Farmer Dave and his wife Linda had a little idea to plant 100 Christmas trees… fastforward to 2018 and the farm now has over 20,000 trees in the ground all waiting to be picked for Christmas. Just outside the village of Stannington, you will find The Sheffield Christmas Tree Company at Cow Gap Farm, S6 6GW. They have six different varieties of trees, from Nordman Firs to Norway and Blue Spruces, potted or cut, big or small – they guarantee to have a tree with your name on it. The Sheffield Christmas Tree Company (SCTC) is a real family-run business; Farmer Dave plants and maintains the trees while his son Travis
S
looks after the sales. His daughter-in-law, Lynne, does all the shaping and pruning, with granddaughter Olivia running the on-site coffee and cake shop. But there’s more than just trees, as Travis explains: “We offer a real family Christmas day out on the farm.” There’s a children’s treasure hunt, a bouncy castle, Shetland ponies, coffee and cakes, Christmas gift shop, Our Cow Molly ice cream and all dogs are welcome but must be on a lead. Obviously the main reason for families to visit has got to be to pick your very own tree! They opened on Saturday 17 November and from this date onwards
people are able to choose and tag up their tree. It will stay in the ground until the date the customer wants to collect it or have it delivered. They guarantee you won’t get a fresher tree in Sheffield than that. SCTC like to think that buying a real Christmas tree is a greener option than an artificial one. For every tree they cut, they plant three more. After Christmas they also run a recycling service where you can drop your tree off at the car park for recycling, free of charge, or they can collect it for £10. The trees are then chipped and used for paths around the farm. The Sheffield Christmas Tree Company is open every day until Christmas Eve 9am-4.30pm.

Festive fun
YOU CAN’T BEAT A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE... AND SHEFFIELD HAS SOME OF THE BEST PLAYS AND PANTOS ON OFFER. BY RICHARD ABBEY. The cast of Peter Pan at The Lyceum. Wendi is back row, third from left
hristmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to one of Sheffield’s fabulous theatres. And this year you’re spoilt for choice – you’ve got Peter Pan at the Lyceum and Kiss Me Kate at The Crucible. Whether you choose one or both, you’re guaranteed to have a great time [oh yes you are!]. We caught up with a leading light from both sides of Tudor Square to find out what’s in store for the festive season.
C
*** Pantomime is as much part of Christmas as partridges in pear trees – and they don’t come much bigger than the annual show at the Lyceum. “If you’ve seen a Sheffield panto, you’ll know it pulls out all the stops and is a brilliant show,” says Wendi Peters who’ll be taking not one, not two, but three leading roles in the upcoming funfilled flying adventure, Peter Pan. She will be joined by the likes of Shaun Williamson, Gemma Hunt, David Ribi 22 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
and legendary dame, Damian Williams. “It’s lovely for me because I normally play the Wicked Queen but this year I’m playing Mrs Darling, Myrtle the Mermaid and Big Chief Squatting Cow, who is Tiger Lily’s mother,” explains Wendi. “I get to do three different roles, three very different characters, which is great fun. I just spend a lot of time changing that’s all.” Wendi is perhaps best recognised for playing Cilla in Coronation street for four years, a role she describes as “pivotal” and “career changing”. And despite her extensive TV work, theatre remains her main passion. In fact, Sheffield holds many fond memories for Wendi who started her professional career in the city after three years at London Studio Centre, a place she described as “like Fame, all in leg warmers and dancing in the corridors. I loved every minute.” Wendi was cast as a dancer in the pantomime Cinderella at The Crucible in 1987 and returned a couple of years later in Babes in the Wood alongside Sheffield legend, Bobby Knutt.
Her Sheffield pantomime pedigree was further enhanced a couple of years ago at the Lyceum – she played the Wicked Queen in Snow White – and she’s positively buzzing about being back this year. It’ll be the second year running she’s done Peter Pan as largely the same team that did the show in Canterbury last year, which received amazing reviews and broke box office records. “There’s everything in it,” beams Wendi. “Fabulous sets, lots of flying acrobats who do the most amazing tricks and everybody is just sensational. Everybody is trained in musical theatre, have fabulous voices, they can all dance, you’re in for a real spectacle. “And because it’s Peter Pan, we have even more kids in it. It’s lovely watching them, doing the shows at Christmas like I used to. They love it and that’s what’s important.” Peter Pan is at the Lyceum 7 December to 6 January 2019. For ticket details, call 0114 249 6000 or visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk
INTERVIEW
iss Me Kate choreographer Matt Flint has quite the pedigree when it comes to putting together stunning dance routines – he’s worked on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing for the last six or so years as well as Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Children in Need, Comic Relief and Pitch Battle. In fact, he’s had to tear himself away from Strictly to get the cast and crew ready for the play’s opening at The Crucible on 7 December. For the uninitiated, Kiss Me Kate was originally penned by Samuel and Bella Spewack with music from Cole Porter and is a riotous, romantic musical comedy from the Golden Age. The story, set in 1940s Baltimore, involves the production of a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict on and off stage between Fred Graham, the show’s director, producer and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi. “It’s a big, big dance show with loads of different styles of choreography in the show which is exciting for me as well as the audience,” explains Matt. “It’s one of the best written dance pieces in English theatre in my opinion. The cast we’ve got are phenomenal; I’m thrilled with the level of talent that we’ve got, in terms of dance especially. The cast is going to be the secret weapon.” The cast features Edward Baker-Duly as Fred and, a returning face to the Crucible, Rebecca Lock as Lilli. They are joined by the likes of Delroy Atkinson, Cindy Belliot, John Conroy, Dafydd Emyr and a face already familiar to Matt, Louis Gaunt. As an aside to his creative and choreography work, Matt has an events business – Can You Dance? – which hosts big dance conventions around the UK. The conventions feature exhibitions, trade stands, showcases and masterclasses as well as giving young dancers incredible opportunities. Which brings us to how Matt first met Louis. “It’s a funny story actually,” Matt says. “ A couple of years ago we found a boy, Louis. What happens to the talented dancers is they get picked up for scholarships to the big performing arts colleges in London. At our event, Louis managed to get a scholarship and now, full circle, has been cast in Kiss Me Kate, which is fantastic.” The show is perfect for the family – “with something in it for everyone” quotes Matt – but the fact that it’s

basically a play within a play caused quite a few problems for director Paul Foster and the production team, largely due to the shape of The Crucible stage, which is surrounded on three sides. “What we’re having to do is try and incorporate the scene change within the number which has been a real challenge,” explains Matt. “A lot of the elements are exposed so while the play’s going on on stage, we’re going to see the workings of the Baltimore theatre behind. It’ll be exciting for the audience in that respect.” It all adds up to an exciting night of theatre. Kiss Me Kate is an established play – it’s Cole Porter’s only show to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway – and won the first Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949. Don’t expect this to phase Matt in the slightest though. “Choreography-wise, the show’s been done many times, so I’m really trying to find my own language in it as well and make it original. I’ve not looked at any past productions or anything like that, I’m trying to put my own stamp on it.” Kiss Me Kate is at The Crucible from 7 December to 12 January 2019. 6-8 December Lomas Hall, Church Street, Stannington www.stanningtonplayers.org.uk For many people in North Sheffield a visit to the annual pantomime staged by Stannington Players at Lomas Hall is one of the strongest traditions that heralds the coming of Christmas. This year the Players were rehearsing for Beauty and the Beast as we went to press and an enthusiastic cast and production team was pulling out all the stops to make it a cracking show for the start of the holiday season. Producer Stephen Rhodes said: “This production gives our young people an opportunity to spread their wings in terms of taking on major roles, dancing or treading the boards for the first time. “If you enjoy the show, don’t forget the Stannington Players also put on plays in April and September. We survive mainly on our audience admission fees, so I hope that you will continue to support us.”

INTERVIEW
Underwater journey DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF THE OCEANS IN AN ARENA TOUR WITH A DIFFERENCE – BLUE PLANET II LOOKS LIKE BEING NEXT YEAR’S BIG THING. AND ‘JAMMY’ YORKSHIRE LASS ANITA RANI CAN’T WAIT TO BE A PART OF IT, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ake a deep breath and get ready to submerge yourself in Blue Planet II – Live in Concert, the tour which is set to be the big arena event of 2019. As well as winning numerous awards, including a BAFTA, Blue Planet II touched so many people when it aired on BBC One at the start of the year, highlighting not only the majesty but the plight facing our oceans now and in the coming years. The arena tour is a live adaptation of a television story that began some 20 years ago when a team of wildlife filmmakers from the BBC’s natural history unit set out to make a series on the world’s oceans, the breadth and scale of which had never been seen before. During the four-year filming of Blue Planet II, the teams embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries, filmed on all continents and in every ocean. Logistically, some of these expeditions could be compared to a trip in space – such was the effort. Anyone who saw the series, could see that it was worth it. Blue Planet II – Live in Concert will feature the best bits of the series presented on a giant state-of-the-art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The stunning visuals will be complemented by the series’ moving score, which was composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, and will be performed by the 80-piece Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Tying the whole together will be recently-announced host, Anita Rani, who will be taking on an Attenborough-esque role. To say the Bradford-born TV personality was excited at the prospect is something of an understatement. “I’m the jammiest person on Earth at the minute,” she enthused. “It’s one of those moments when, without thinking, you just say ‘yes’. To be part of the Blue Planet II brand, to be deemed good
T
26 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
enough to be able to do this, just personally, it’s a big, big moment in my life.” Anita is well known and well liked for her various TV roles, which includes The Edit, Cricket AM, The One Show, Countryfile and Strictly Come Dancing. And she’s (not so) secretly delighted that this tour allows her to live out one of her own personal fantasies. “Come on, who doesn’t want to be Beyonce? A small part of me would love to be Beyonce but I need to accept that’s probably not going to happen but I’m still going to be able to do an arena tour with Blue Planet II. I’m very excited.” So what can audiences expect? “The whole thing is going to be a very powerful, overwhelming experience for anyone who comes along to see the show,” explains Anita. “Even though it’s huge, with thousands of people in the auditorium, it should have a real intimacy about it, we’re all going on a deep sea journey together. “The key thing about it is it’s family entertainment. We want it to be crossgenerational, we want you to have the experience that you have at home watching it with the whole family and for people to walk out there talking about it. “But it’s more than just a show they’ll
talk about, it’ll be a feeling they’ll have forever. Can you imagine being able to come and see something like this at the age of eight? It’ll be one of those moments in your life you’ll never forget.” There’s no surprise that Anita, like many of us, was a huge fan of the series. “You’re watching it and you cannot believe what you’re seeing,” she says. “There was one scene with a squid that could change its colour and can camouflage itself. That’s real, that’s actually happening, that’s not CGI, it’s not Pixar-animated… it really puts us as a human race in perspective. It’s very humbling.” In the short time I spent speaking with Anita it was clear that she is hugely passionate about this next career step, she’s bubbly, bright and still retains plenty of that Yorkshire sense of humour. When I raised the point about spending 13 weeks on tour she was positively ecstatic: “I’ll be on that bus raising hell! Watch out Nottingham, watch out Leeds, there’ll be TVs flying out of hotel room windows… I can’t wait!” Of course you don’t need to be from Yorkshire to recognise her tongue was planted firmly in cheek during that exchange but you get the sense she’s fun to be around and will always have a cup of Yorkshire tea at hand – she carries a box of teabags with her whenever she’s filming. Aside from preparing for the Blue Planet II tour, Anita has launched her own podcast – It’s Anita Rani – which centres around extraordinary interviews with inspiring people. There’s a couple more TV projects lined up too but in her own words “I can’t talk about them until I can talk about them”. It seems the star that is Anita Rani is very much in the ascendancy. You can see Blue Planet II – Live in Concert at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena on 28 March 2019. See www.flydsaarena.co.uk for further details.

DEAR PARISHIONERS
Together we have planted English Oak trees and sited memorial benches across the Parish. The trees are a living reminder to future generations “Lest we forget. I hope that in due time our successors will renew these trees and maintain our promise,
For a century we have remembered and recorded the sights, sounds and memories of those who witnessed the tragedy of the Great War. Now all of those men who answered the call to arms or served their country and fellow citizens in many other capacities have passed away. This November, the Parish Council with you my fellow parishioners, have honoured the memory of the 450 men who were, husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, cousins and friends and of whom 150 did not return.

At the end of October we received some really good news as partnership colleague Claire Watts reports below.
“SHEFFIELD LAKELAND LANDSCAPE PARTNERSHIP GETS THE GO-AHEADâ€? Sheffield Lakeland Partnership, which is led by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, has been awarded ÂŁ2.6 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund - the last part in the jigsaw for a ÂŁ3.4 million programme of heritage conservation projects in north-west Sheffield. All projects contribute to the Partnership’s vision of “A landscape, for everyone to value, enjoy, understand and feel part ofâ€?. BradďŹ eld Parish Council is a key partner and has been an active supporter and steering group member throughout the development of the funding bid. At this festive time not only does Father Christmas have responsibilities but so does the Parish Council’s Chairman. Once again we have held a Christmas card competition and we received many entries from the 6 local primary schools in the Parish. After council business on the 14th November colleagues had the very pleasant but difficult task of deciding on two finalists from each school and from those entries selecting an overall winner. The winning design was by Elsie Mae Hill. Elsie Mae Hill’s winning entry
As in previous years all the finalists were invited to a tea party held in the Council Offices on the 28th November. I was delighted to present prizes to all the children and award a £50 book token to each school that took part. After the tea party Elsie Mae had the job of switching on the lights on the Parish’s Christmas Trees. A count down and one swift push of a plunger illuminated the lights of 12 trees located across the parish. It has been a great event and start to the Christmas festival. It’s so refreshing to see the enthusiasm of the children expressed in their art. On that upbeat note I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2019. OUR PARTNERS Continuing my partnership theme from my last article Jacquie Budd of the Stocksbridge based countryside management charity, The Steel Valley Project says they have enjoyed many years of partnership with BradďŹ eld Parish Council. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the charity currently undertakes work on various sites around the Parish. Many people will have come across the Steel Valley Project in Coronation Park, Oughtibridge this year when they held environmentally themed arts and crafts events for children during the school holidays. The charity also oversees a 10 year woodland management plan (approved by the Forestry Commission and BradďŹ eld Parish Council) for Sensicall Park woodland in Oughtibridge.
In total, the charity’s volunteer teams have spent over 300 hours in Sensicall Park woodland and, along with members of the local community, have worked on improving the steps and steep paths to help people explore further. Some trees were removed to help increase UIF DPWFSBHF PG XJME Ô PXFST XIJMTU B OVNCFS PG PUIFS USFFT XFSF planted to provide diversity and resilience for the woodland. Visit the www.steelvalleyproject.org blog or social media pages to keep up to date with their current work.
ACTION IN SENSICALL PARK
Earlier this year, local Tesco shoppers voted for the Sensicall Park ‘Green Woodland Community Project’ in the Bags of Help Scheme, resulting in a ÂŁ2k grant. Two further grants of ÂŁ3k were also received from JG Graves Charitable Trust and BradďŹ eld Parish Council. The grants have enabled the Steel Valley Project to improve access, repair paths and improve the character of the woodland environment. Additionally, three workshops in traditional greenwood craft skills, run by local rural craftsman Jasper Prachek, were held free of charge and attended by over 30 members of the community.

COUNCIL NOTES It has been a busy two months since my last report. At the end of September with councillors Mavis and Peter Butler, I attended the annual Peak Park Parishes Forum. This meeting enables parish councillors to meet and discuss with NP officers issues that affect the lives of residents and visitors to the Park. The meeting focussed on the sustainability of rural Councillors study PDNPA papers communities. Councillors urged the national parks authorities as a group which can speak directly to government, to press for real action to deliver affordable housing for local people, to address the serious decline in rural transport services and the continuing deterioration of vital community services like banks, post offices and village shops. At the Forum’s AGM I was elected to the management committee which has regular contact which senior national park officers. Working with the National Park’s community engagement officer we were able to participate in the very successful Walking through Time event. Organised by the BradďŹ eld branch of the “Walkers are Welcomeâ€? NP officers consult on planning issues organisation it was an opportunity to consult residents and visitors about local issues
and planning concerns as well as celebrating local walking “heroesâ€? like GHB Ward and our Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. The Council has asked Sheffield’s Chief Planner, Mr Rob MurďŹ n when the long awaited Development Plan will be put out for public consultation. “Sometime in the next few monthsâ€? was the response. When it does surface I very much hope that parishioners will engage with the consultation as the Plan will no doubt contain controversial proposals perhaps affecting the green belt boundary in the parish. Councillors have considered and commented on two major public consultations. 1 the Government sought the public’s views on their proposal to allow developers who wish to explore by “frackingâ€? for shale gas to have this designated as “permitted developmentâ€?. Such a change in planning law would make it almost impossible for local concerns to be a part any consideration of a development proposal. We have strongly opposed this and suggested that green belt land should also be exempt from any such change alongside some other “protectedâ€? designations’. 2 following many successful years of operation Supertram have to seek central government funding to develop and upgrade their service. We have supported the need for funds to upgrade the service and suggested that improvements should include re engaging with the idea of a Tram/ train development to Stocksbridge and better provision for wheel chair travellers, the possibility of cycle carriage and better access for rural bus services to the tram termini.

Fall in love with Chique WINTER CAN PLAY HAVOC WITH OUR HAIR. TURN TO THE EXPERTS TO MAKE SURE IT’S LOOKING AND FEELING ITS BEST. he winter weather can wreak havoc on our skin, hair and nails, and we can spend hundreds trying to repair the damage in the new year. Why wait until the damage is already done when the team at Chique Hair and Beauty Salon are there to help you stay one step ahead of the elements all year round? In the UK we’re not blessed with the nicest weather at the best of times, and we’ve come to expect the worst throughout the winter. Cold winds, rain showers and even snow can impact the health of not only our skin and our nails, but also that of our hair. The ladies at Chique know how to get your hair looking and feeling its best, and they share a wealth of knowledge and experience between them that you’ll struggle to find elsewhere. You’ll be in good hands with any of the hair team at Chique, whether you pop in to see Lisa, Tiff or Beth. Lisa has over 22 years of experience working in the hair and beauty industry. worked in London for eight years before returning home and starting work at Chique 12 years ago. Tiff is also qualified in hair and barbering, with 13 years of experience in the sector, and Beth is currently in her first year of training at the salon. When it comes to looking after our hair, Chique use brands we all know and love such as GHD, Olaplex and Matrix, and they offer a number of services to keep our tresses in the best possible condition. Whether you just need a bit of a trim or a full hair overhaul, the Chique ladies can provide just what you’re looking for. From cut and colours to intense hair treatments, they’ll get your hair looking and feeling brand new. And if the Christmas period hasn’t been kind to your purse, don’t worry too much as Chique have some fantastic deals for you to take advantage of this winter. Beth is offering free blow dries and discounted colours while Tiff is offering £5 off your next colour appointment when you refer a friend.
While hair is what this Oughtibridge salon has been known for over the years, it’s not all they have to offer. The newer beauty side of the business is booming, and the ladies can prep your skin and nails for the big chill too. The salon offers facial treatments including Dermalift, which pushes products deeper into the skin for better results. They also offer a wide range of nail treatments using high-quality products that won’t leave your nails weak or damaged. With great prices for all of their quality products and treatments, it’s no wonder locals and customers from even further afield have fallen in love with the service at Chique. Feeling festive GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF GLAM THIS CHRISTMAS.
ith Christmas right around the corner, there’s really no better time to treat yourself to a trip to the salon, and Lew Burgin Hair and Beauty are ready to get you looking and feeling your best for the festive season. A staple within the Stannington community for over 40 years, Lew Burgin Hair and Beauty is still here and strong as ever. The business has been run by Lew Burgin himself since the doors to the salon opened (although Lew’s been in the business for over 60 years), and it was only this April that his daughter Nicky took the reins after years of working alongside her father. Nicky took three years away from the salon after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and she came back breathing a new lease of life into the family business.
W
“It’s time for him to settle down and retire rather than being rushed off his feet everyday,” she said. When Nicky returned to the business, she fully refitted the salon, making it more modern and welcoming, and much more accommodating to the long list of beauty services they now offer as well as hairdressing. Whether you’re just looking to pop in for a trim or you’d like to breathe life into your locks with some highlights or even a perm, you’ll be in great hands with Nicky and her team of lovely ladies. Nicky has over 30 years of experience, and her team members are no strangers to the hair and beauty industry either, with Jill having over 40 years’ experience and Chantelle with over a decade behind her. Just as they can get your hair looking
fabulous, they can get your fingers looking fancy too, using the best products to keep your nails looking beautiful and keeping them in good condition too, whether you opt for gels, acrylics or just a polish over your natural nail. We all know that cameras seem to come out a lot more at Christmastime, as we love to capture those special moments around the tree with our families. If you tend to be camera-shy and you’re wanting a little bit of extra confidence before the flash goes off, the team at Lew Burgin can help get your skin glowing and photo-ready. From facials, waxing and eyebrow and eyelash tinting to eyelash extensions for a longer lasting look, they really can get you looking great from head to toe. With all sorts of Christmas packages and offers available at Lew Burgin Hair and Beauty throughout the festive period, why not give yourself the gift of glam? Swiss adventure HOLLIE LEIGHTON, FROM SPA TRAVEL, HITS THE RAILS IN SWITZERLAND.
The Bernina Express train Image courtesy Alessandro Lucca / 123RF.com
have just returned from an adventure in the Alps seeing some of the spectacular scenery and sights of Switzerland. I was lucky enough to be hosted by one of our preferred tour operator partners, Classic Collection Holidays, on a three-night break, spending one night in famous Zermatt and two nights in the beautiful area of St Moritz. To get to our first stop of Zermatt and its famous Matterhorn mountain we flew into Zurich airport with Swiss Airlines direct from Manchester. There is a train station at Zurich Airport so connections and travel from the airport are easy, frequent and most of the time run like clockwork! Three hours and 30 minutes from Zurich airport via train and you arrive into beautiful Zermatt. It is a car free village so transport consists of electric buses, bikes and horse-drawn carriages. It is a perfect location to walk/hike with its famous peaks and the mountain train and cable cars give amazing views of the Matterhorn and surrounding areas. The

old town is very pretty and full of flowers in front of the high street shops, designer boutiques and cafes. In Zermatt centre is the Gornergrat station where we joined the train up the mountains to the famous Gornergrat viewing area, which is at an altitude of over 3,000 metres. It is a 360-degree panoramic viewing area where you can enjoy sites of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains as well as over 200 other peaks. On a clear day you may be able to see the Mont Blanc Massif in France or the German Black Forest. We were lucky with sunshine (if not very cold with ice and snow thickly layered on the grounds) and spent an hour admiring the beautiful scenery. Once back down in Zermatt we had a short walk across the road to the main station and moved onto Brig where we then boarded the famous Glacier Express train for the remaining seven hours of our journey to St Moritz. The Glacier Express train is the slowest express train in the world and travels through some of the most scenic parts of the country. You
have panoramic windows where you can enjoy the views and the steady journey up and down the mountains. You can have the option of dinner on board the train, which we did. If you are a fan of trains, spectacular views (or both!) then this is definitely for you. Arriving late evening into St Moritz we then moved onto our hotel for the remaining two nights. Set in the Albua Alps Region and at 1,800 metres, St Moritz and the surrounding villages have been the centre of Swiss Alps tourism for years attracting royal families and celebrities. The resort is full of designer boutiques and excellent restaurants. The area is renowned for its winter sports but in the summer also offers great summer activities like hiking, cycling and also windsurfing/water sports on the area’s famous lakes. We did a full day excursion from St Moritz, taking the train first of all to the Bernina Diavolezza base station where you then join the Diavolezza cable car and travel to 3,000 metres to the Diavolezza peak viewing platform. Here

you are rewarded with the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Then once back down to base station we moved onto another train which took us over the Swiss border to the beautiful town of Tirano in Italy. Due to time restrictions we had a whistlestop 45-minute stay in Tirano but were treated to a gorgeous authentic Italian lunch at the Al Portici restaurant – a definite recommendation from me if you ever find yourself in Tirano. Leaving Tirano we joined the sister train of the Glacier Express – the Bernina Express Train – to take us from Tirano back to St Moritz. A beautiful 2 hour 30 minute journey was full of breath-taking views past waterfalls, ravines, mountain streams and over bridges and viaducts through the Engadin Valley. I must say out of all the train journeys we did the scenery on the Bernina Express journey topped them all – it really was just so pretty, you couldn’t put your camera down in case you missed the next beautiful sight! After one last night back in St Moritz it was time to come home. A seamless service yet again on the Swiss trains and

an easy two-hour flight from Zurich back to Manchester completed my Swiss adventure. Having never been to Switzerland or its surrounding areas before I can see why it is so popular year round with summer walkers/hikers/scenery lovers and also through the winter for adventurers and skiers alike. It is a year round destination that has something for everyone – but if you are a lover of trains and beautiful scenery then this is definitely the place for you! I can’t wait to get my walking shoes back on and get
there in the summer myself. Top tip – the fly luggage service used throughout the country is excellent and If you are going on excursions or a long journey for a day your big suitcase can be transported from one hotel to another for you so you don’t have to worry about moving that on and off a train – it can all be done for you. If you wish to talk further about a trip then please feel free to contact me on 01937 845678 or email me at hollie@spa-travel.com and I will be more than happy to assist.

Embrace the outdoors LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR? GRAB THE FAMILY AND HEAD OUT ON A WINTER WALK WITH A WELL-EARNED DRINK AT THE END, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. t may be a time to relax and take things easy, but there comes a moment for most of us during that period between Christmas and New Year when the thought of snuggling down on the settee with a plate of mince pies and an old movie starts to lose its appeal. It’s time to round up the relatives, dig out your warmest coats and stoutest footwear and get some exercise. Fortunately we have some fantastic walking routes right on our doorstep. Even better, many of these walks feature a splendid pub or two at journey’s end or en route... and once you’ve got a few

miles under your belt you will have earned that pint. We really are spoilt for choice, but here is a selection guaranteed to bring you some fresh air, fabulous scenery, and a glass of something cold and refreshing at the end of it. For all these walks sturdy shoes or walking boots and a waterproof are essential. Don’t take any risks of course, but don’t let a bit of drizzle put you off either. As the godfather of British rambling Alfred Wainwright said: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”
WALKS
Bradfield Reservoirs Low Bradfield has two reservoirs close at hand – Agden and Damflask – making it a great starting point for a walk at Christmas or any time of year. There are first-rate food and drink options too and the clear paths on the shorter circular routes around the reservoirs are ideal for family outings involving young children, pushchairs and anyone who just wants a quick blast of fresh air. A circular, anti-clockwise walk around Agden reservoir is 2.5 miles on designated paths, quiet roads and Yorkshire Water permissive paths. While mostly level, the paths are natural trails and can be muddy in wet weather and, in places, uneven with tree roots that can be slippery. There are also a couple of sections where the path climbs above the water line with a drop to the side. 1. From the car park in Low Bradfield, take the path running behind the car park to the stream, following the path over a wooden footbridge and climbing the steps up the other side of the bank. Continue uphill to the road, where you turn left towards Agden dam wall and cross a bridge towards the entrance to the Yorkshire Water permissive path on the left. 2. With the reservoir on your left, follow
the path up to a wooden gate and turn left onto a track. Stay on this track until the reservoir turns into a stream and keep an eye out for a wooden footbridge to the left – it can be difficult to see this path to the bridge, but if you come to a fenced area on your right with a sign for Agden Bog, you’ve gone a little too far. 3. Take the path on the left down to the river, through a gate and across the wooden bridge. Climb gently uphill through woodland until you’re on a high path above the water level – where you’ll be treated to a great view across the reservoir. A signpost will direct you left, back down towards the water level, and the path will eventually emerge onto a road. Turn left here, past the dam wall, and at the road junction follow the sign to the left back to Low Bradfield. 4. For a walk of a similar length more suited to pushchairs, wheelchairs and very young children go for the 3.5-mile (approx. two hours) walk around Damflask reservoir to the other side of the village. Or if you’re after something longer (approx. six miles), combine a circuit of both Agden and Damflask reservoirs.
For more information on walks in the area and route maps, visit the excellent Bradfield – Walkers are Welcome site.
The pint: Chatsworth Gold is a golden beer made with honey from the Chatsworth Estate. The delicate sweetness is well balanced with bitterness from Goldings and Fuggles hops. The walk: There are several lovely scenic walks in this neck of the woods and we’ve chosen a family-

friendly ramble to Calton Hollow. At just over two miles most people can tackle it with ease. 1. Start: Calton Lees car park. 2. Leave the car park at the bottom right-hand corner and follow the lane past the garden centre towards Calton Lees. 4. Where the lane takes a sharp left, follow the track ahead. 5. Go through the gate (public bridleway sign) up the hill. 6. Just past the houses at the top, turn right through a gate. 7. Follow the grassy bank at the top and cross the pasture to the left of the hay barn. Go through the gate in the wall. 8. Follow the track through the wood to the gate into the park. 9. Turn right and follow the park wall to the small gate into the car park.

Nine Ladies Stone Circle The Pub: The Druid, Birchover www.druidinnbirchover.co.uk This beautifully renovated historic inn is just a short walk away from the mysterious plateau of Stanton Moor, with all its Pagan history and neighbouring Rowtor Rocks made famous in the cult film The Princess Bride. The pint: There’s an everchanging selection of hand-pulled local ales to choose from. Black Sheep is an excellent choice. *** The Walk: Stanton Moor has many prehistoric remains including The Nine Ladies Stone Circle. Legend has it that the nine ladies danced here on the Sabbath Day and were turned to stone as a punishment, along with the fiddler who stands nearby. 1. Walk down the road towards the Druid Inn and, as the road bends to the right opposite the Inn, turn sharp right up a tree-lined path, climbing up above the village houses. 2. On passing through a quarry car park, turn left and walk along the road towards Stanton for a quarter
of a mile, before turning right onto a footpath with a walled entrance. 3. Continue up a rough track for a short distance to enter Stanton Moor by a high stile and continue straight ahead to reach the Cork Stone, a large upright stone with climbing footholds and handgrips added. 4. At this point as the path forks, keep to the right, and then at a path crossroads further along the moor go left for half a mile to reach The Nine Ladies Stone Circle. 5. Turn to the right from the Stone Circle and gradually descend through the trees, going to the left at a fork in the path and walk towards Earl Grey’s Tower. 6. Cross the stile by the tower and descend the steps on the other side, turn right along the path round the edge of the moor, keeping close to the fence. 7. After about three-quarters of a mile, the path descends to a minor road. 8. Here you turn right for about 200 yards and then go through a stile on the left and follow the path round the side of a hill towards Barn Farm. 9. Keep to the rear of the farm buildings, heading towards the bottom right hand corner of the field to go through a stile by a gate where you immediately turn right. 10. Continue straight ahead, shortly to join the farm drive that leads to the road back into Birchover.
Linacre Reservoirs The Pub: The Peacock, Cutthorpe www.thepeacockcutthorpe.co.uk Sensitively renovated, this classic Derbyshire pub prides itself on a warm welcome. There’s an extensive beer and wine list, delicious freshly made food using locally sourced ingredients and a lovely cosy atmosphere. The Pint: the selection of hand-pulled ales changes regularly and includes Bakewell Best Bitter from Chatsworth Brewery. *** The Walk: This is one of the nicest gentle walks in the Peak District and a real favourite for families and dog walkers. You could start this walk at around 10am and have lunch and a pint. 1. It doesn’t matter which car park you have used, walk downhill on the road you arrived on and pass the woodland building. 2. Follow this path until you come to a bridge and follow the path to the right, uphill after the bridge. 3. At the top of the slope you come to a gate. Follow the path a little and go through the gap in the fence and follow the path down to the reservoirs. You then follow this path keeping the reservoirs on your right. 4. You’ll notice at the third reservoir that it is a nature reserve so please respect the area. On your way around try to notice all the wood carvings that have been done – The owl house, the old man – to name two. 5. On your way back pass the picnic tables and the middle reservoir. You’ll come to steps on the left, which take you back to the car park.
Five Weirs Walk
***
The Pub: The Sheffield Tap www.sheffieldtap.com This ‘world beer freehouse’ offers 11 traditional cask hand pulls, 12 continental beers on tap and over 200 different bottled world beers within the Grecian architecture of Sheffield Midland Railway Station, accessed from either Platform 1b or Sheaf Street.
The Walk: It’s always good to mix things up between rural and urban walking and here’s something a little different. It’s on the flat, with clear footpaths all the way, it gives a glimpse of Sheffield’s industrial heritage and there are plenty of options according to whether you want a lengthy stretch of the legs or a gentle city stroll...
The Pint: You can sup your way around the world here, but how about something closer to home? Let’s settle on the Rodeo IPA from the pub’s own Tapped Brewery Co. in Sheffield.
1. This walking trail follows National Cycle Route 6 along the River Don from Sheffield city centre to Meadowhall Shopping Centre. 2. The route starts at Lady’s Bridge in Sheffield city centre, and heads over the Cobweb Bridge, past Bailey Bridge, and
60 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
through Attercliffe to Meadowhall. 3. Along the way you will pass the five weirs from which the route takes its name. It’s also a great way to see Sheffield’s industrial past and present with lots of interesting riverside buildings along the way. 4. The path is flat and well maintained so it’s a good cycle ride for families. 5. At Meadowhall the route links with the Sheffield Canal. You could return along the canal (the towpath is a bit narrow for bikes). This would turn it into the eight-mile circular walk known as The Sheffield Blue Loop. 6. For a shorter route, take a Supertram back into town. Or start your day by taking a tram to Meadowhall and do the walk in reverse. It’s just a couple of minutes on foot from Lady’s Bridge to the train station.

Alison Palmer
All change ALISON PALMER HAS SWAPPED SELLING MORTGAGES FOR PULLING PINTS AS THE NEW CUSTODIAN OF STANNINGTON’S CROWN AND GLOVE. hat makes a mortgage adviser with no background in the hospitality trade give up a steady even-paced desk job for the fullon challenge of running a village pub? If you wanted an easy life you might be tempted to stick with what you know, but as soon as Alison Palmer spotted the opportunity to manage the Crown & Glove in Stannington she knew it was the challenge she’d been waiting for. “It was because of this pub that I took the plunge and decided to try something completely different,” she says. “I grew up in this area and knew the Crown & Glove already. I didn’t come in that often because it was not much of a family pub, but I saw the potential. “It’s unique and has a great buzz about it. This is a fantastic village pub with a great bunch of locals and regulars who create a really good atmosphere. “I knew from first glance there was something special about it, and the more I looked into it the more I realised this was what I wanted.” Alison has been publican for three whirlwind months now and has already brought in some big changes, with more to come. While the inside of the pub does not

look so different, the kitchen has been completely refurbished along with the food menu which now contains more choice. There’s something for everyone and special deals – such as Thursday steak night with two steaks and a bottle of wine for £25 – are proving to be a real winner. There’s also a new improved kids’ menu and this, along with the introduction of a toy box, is helping to attract the family clientele that Alison wants. There’s a great choice of premium drinks with four cask beers and Moretti while Heineken on draught will be available soon. If ale is not your thing there is now also an impressive range of gins and cocktails. Alison is also introducing drinks deals to encourage customers to try something a little different. Entertainment includes live sporting action with Sky and BT Sports on the new big screen projector, Wednesday quiz nights and lots of live music. Alison recently left an acoustic guitar in the tap room and encourages people to pick it up and play. “Live music helps create a lively, fun atmosphere,” she says.
Meanwhile Alison’s really looking forward to the festive season. “This is going to be my first Christmas and New Year in the pub and it is going to be quite special, I can’t wait,” she says. Christmas carols will be sung every Tuesday in the run-up to Christmas from 8.30pm, and Stannington Brass Band will be playing in the pub on Sunday 9 December. There’s also a special Christmas fayre food menu with some places still available for key dates. As well as families, walkers and dogs are welcome. Canine companions are spoilt rotten in fact, with their own selfie board, free doggy treats and a special ‘doggy beer’ that is full of vitamins and good things. So if a good village pub that’s family and dog-friendly with real fires, great beers, delicious food and theme nights appeals, you know where to come. You’re sure of a warm welcome – and it’s a lot more fun than filling in a mortgage form. Crown & Glove 96 Uppergate Road Stannington, S6 6BY Tel 0114 232 4440

A home is the bedrock to everything THE LIVINGWELL MODEL MEANS PEOPLE ACCESSING SPECIALIST SERVICES ALWAYS HAVE A SAFE, SECURE HOME CLOSE TO THEIR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY. o-one should have to move out of their local area to access specialist mental health or learning disability support – they need to be home; safe, supported and surrounded by their family, belongings and community. That’s why South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) teamed up with Sheffield Care and Social NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) to create LivingWell, a model that ensures people accessing these services have the safety and security of being in their own home – always. Juliann Hall, Director of Care, Health and Wellbeing at SYHA, said: “The reality was that many people with a mental health diagnosis had been displaced for many years, and were in rehabilitation units, and those places will never be a home. When you’re in your own home, you have access to your things – your books, your family, your community, and when people are sent away, that link’s broken, so they lose the very connection with the thing that makes them well. “As a housing association, we believe that your home is the absolute bedrock to everything; that you cannot be well without a good home and roof over your head.” LivingWell works with local people to give them the skills they need to live independently in their own fullyfurnished home. By working alongside a named keyworker from SYHA and the Community Enhancing Recovery Team at SHSC, the people who receive this support are involved in developing their own personalised support plan which has their best interests at heart. Mike Hunter, Executive Medical Director at SHSCT, commented: “Receiving care in a rehabilitation unit miles away from your home just isn’t the best place to recover.

HEROES
“I’ve done a lot of work with people who are homeless and people who’ve been in locked rehabilitation units, and, if I’ve learnt anything, it’s that sorting out housing is what makes the real difference in their recovery.” The LivingWell model began more than three years ago and around 50 people have benefitted from better health and wellbeing outcomes, which this model provides. The model was founded on the principle that for someone to be well physically and mentally they need to have quality housing, receive support in their local community and have access to the crucial support network that family, friends and carers offer. The individual’s care and clinical needs are wrapped around their home. SYHA
“The house the person is given is then there for as long as they need it – even if they’re re-admitted they can always come back home.”
work closely with partners in local health and social services to make sure they complement the individual’s existing care requirements. The house the person is given is then there for as long as they need it – even if they’re re-admitted they can always come back home. Juliann Hall adds: “The thing that created part of the solution on this was the relationship between ourselves and the care trust, because we were willing to be different. “As we had a long-standing relationship and trusted each other, we were willing to take a very different approach and be radical and take that risk. But the most important thing is that it’s changed the lives of the people that have moved back to Sheffield.”
Lisa Knowles*, who has benefitted from the LivingWell model, said: “For me, it’s important being back somewhere I know, somewhere I’m familiar with. When I go out of the door, I know where to go, I know where I am, and I know which way to turn… it’s somewhere that feels like home. “I originally was sent away and my family didn’t know I was there – I didn’t have chance to tell them. I felt as if I was completely on my own. “Eventually I got moved back to Sheffield to live in my own house, and in the first month I received an incredible amount of support. If I hadn’t gotten
that I would have ended up back in hospital.” Natalie Newman, LivingWell manager and area lead, at SYHA added: “The collaboration between SYHA and SHSC has been an insight into the future of mental health services where health, housing and care, work together as equally invaluable partners assisting people to improve their lives. “We’re proud of the difference this innovative and seamless partnership is having on people’s lives. We want to find like-minded collaborators so we can continue to make great things happen in other cities.” By working together SYHA and SHSC have been able to give people returning to Sheffield a safe and secure place to call home. Clear from the outset THE IMPORTANCE OF UPDATING A WILL AFTER MAJOR LIFE EVENTS – BY IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH’S CARLA RIST. recent claim on behalf of infant children for maintenance from their deceased father’s estate has highlighted the importance of keeping a Will up to date. Mr Ubbi died unexpectedly in February 2015 when he was in the process of getting a divorce from his wife. He had one disabled child and a stepdaughter. He had been living simultaneously with Bianca Corrado, and had fathered two children who at the time of his death were aged three and six months. Mr Ubbi was described in court as living a ‘double life’, running two households to a high standard of living. His estate was valued at £3.4million. Ms Corrado originally sought a lump sum of £850,000 from Mr Ubbi’s estate under the Inheritance Act on behalf of her illegitimate children. They had not been provided for in his Will, which was dated August 2010. At one point during the process the claim had been as high as £2.3million. The court had to adjudicate on three significant areas of dispute between the parties: housing needs, childcare and private schooling. It eventually ruled that
A
private education could not be included, and awarded Ms Corrado £386,000. The judge found there was “no expectation that the children would have been educated privately” and did “not accept that the provision of private education is a reasonable financial provision for the children”. Carla Rist, an Associate in the Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, said thousands of families could face the same issue. Divorce and remarriage had become increasingly common in society, yet Wills were rarely updated after big life events. “It can be incredibly costly in the long run to let your Will languish with outdated information,” Carla said. “In this case, the deceased led a double life and stayed married to his former wife while living with his mistress at the time of his death. It’s vital to consider the consequences of staying married to someone when the relationship has broken down irretrievably, particularly if you then have a second family. “This case also goes to show that whilst updating a Will may seem costly and time-consuming from the outset, the fallout of leaving heirs and second
families unaccounted for is much worse. Will disputes can have a devastating effect on families and can massively exacerbate existing tensions.” In evidence, Mr Ubbi’s widow Susan said he had told her he did not intend to change the provisions in his Will, and his estate would be left to her so that she could provide for their son. She also said the couple had reconciled before his death and he had prevented her from divorcing him. But the judge did not accept that evidence. Carla said: “It is not commonly known that getting remarried can invalidate a previous Will, leaving potential heirs with no option other than to pursue a claim. We strongly advise that a person’s Will is updated after every major life event, be that divorce, remarriage or death. That way the inevitable stress, cost and fallout from a Will dispute can be avoided.” Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth offer unrivalled guidance and advice to help you plan appropriately and make the right decisions at the right time. The next step FAMILY VALUES REMAIN AT THE HEART OF PA JEWELLERY’S SUCCESS AFTER A DIFFICULT YEAR FOR THE MUCH-LOVED BUSINESS. The ‘family’ at PA Jewellery
FEATURE
ith the busy Christmas shopping period approaching, when thoughts turn to extra special gifts, many Sheffielders will make a visit to PA Jewellery their top priority. But there is no escaping from the fact that the festive period will be very different this year. Mike Marsh, the founder and figurehead of PA Jewellery, died early this year after a short illness. He was diagnosed with cancer in September 2017 and succumbed just five months later. It was a crushing blow for his wife Pam, daughters Louise, Sarah and Susan, and also for his loyal staff, whose progress Mike nurtured and who he regarded very much as his ‘other family’. But if you were wondering how a relatively small family business would survive such a body blow, don’t worry. The family atmosphere that Mike instilled and encouraged over the years didn’t just make PA Jewellery a fantastic place to work... it sowed the seeds for a succession to ensure the business, that started from scratch in a back bedroom 40 years ago and now employs 17 people, will not just survive but continue to grow. Since 2 October an EOT (Employee Ownership Trust) has been put in place, which means the employees are now also owners – they have a stake in the company, and its future is assured. For Pam Marsh, this completes a process that began 18 months ago when Mike was thinking about taking a step back and looking for ways to make sure the company continued to thrive. “Mike put his whole life into PA Jewellery and he never lorded it over his staff. They were his equals and colleagues and he wanted to bring out the best in them,” says Pam. “In fact he thought the world of them, and they felt the same about him. The EOT is exactly what he wanted and he would be so proud and happy to see this. “The staff are now majority shareholders and each one of those staff are jewellers, not shop assistants; they are all specialists in their own right.” PA Jewellery certainly excels when it comes to staff expertise, both behind the counter and in the workshop. Pam remains on the Board of Directors and is joined by her and Mike’s daughter Susan. The team at PA Jewellery will be headed up by managing director Ian Cookson and co-director Suzanne Thompson. Amy Campbell-Jones, another long-term employee, becomes an associate director. All have built their careers at PA Jewellery and regular visitors will continue
W
to see the familiar faces that Mike Marsh selected and nurtured over the years. Meanwhile behind the scenes the business continues to go from strength to strength. “The workshop really makes PA Jewellery stand out,” says Pam. “If a client walks in and they would like a bespoke ring, somebody will draw it for them, they’ll then be taken through to
a destination and once customers are here they find it’s not what they have come to expect from a high street jewellers. The staff are much more involved, you get people coming in asking for specific members of staff because they’ve built up that relationship.” Ian adds: “We don’t have uniforms, there is no company line or silly sales
L-R: Ian Cookson, Suzanne Thompson and Pam Marsh
the gems lab to pick out a stone, and then the ring will be made to their specifications. That’s unique.” Meanwhile the latest member of the PA Jewellery family to win an industry award is Zoe Lewis, who was named best gemmologist candidate in an exam that was taken not just in the UK but worldwide. Zoe was also singled out as the exceptional candidate of the year – a special award that is not given out annually as a matter of course, only when an individual stands out as being truly exceptional. “Mike loved it when his staff picked up new qualifications and he would have been so proud of Zoe,” Ian adds: “A lot of what Mike built up was so successful, we don’t plan to make dramatic changes. It was the hard work Mike put in during the first 20 years that got PA Jewellery recognised, then for the next 20 years it has kept customers coming through the door. “I recently sold an engagement ring to someone and I’d sold an engagement ring to his parents in my first year of working here. We’ve reached the point now where we are starting to meet the children and grandchildren of Mike’s first customers.” Suzanne sees the quirkiness of PA, famously appointed at The Old Bank in Commonside, as one of its strengths. “PA is a little off the beaten track, it is
technique to follow. Mike just told us to treat every customer as we would like to be treated if we went into a shop... just be honest and treat people well. “Mike never forgot that we rely on our customers. He always said it did not matter if someone spent £10 or £10,000, you treat them just the same. ” December is always the busiest time in PA Jewellery and this year Mike’s absence will be felt keenly. This was the month when he never took a day off, he was a constant presence front of house and his sartorial style, always immaculate, became even more noticeable. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve he would wear a snazzy bow tie and got stuck in with the rest of the team, helping to solve all those last-minute gift problems. But behind the inevitable sadness there will be a strong sense of purpose as this not-so-small family business moves in the right direction. New managing director Ian Cookson sums it up nicely. “We are still here, we are still stable and the values that people have always liked about PA Jewellery are very much intact.” PA Jewellery The Old Bank, Commonside, Sheffield, S10 1GD Tel: 0114 266 9253 www.pajewellery.com www.rmcmedia.co.uk 79

Checking Out
Famous Last Lines
We said goodbye to a host of famous names over the last 12 months. Can you recognise these dearly departed souls from 2018?
Most of us will settle down to watch an old movie or two over Christmas. Can you recognise these Hollywood classics from the last words spoken in the films? We’ve thrown in some little clues to help you.
1. This pioneer of the nightclub scene in Sheffield and Leeds created local venues where stars like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder performed. He later moved to London where he became synonymous with lap-dancing and leopard skin.
6. Spoken by a man driving a speedboat to another man who is wearing a dress.
“Well, nobody’s perfect.” 2. This tough guy actor’s best role came in a harrowing film about four friends who meet up for a weekend canoeing trip in the wilds of Georgia... the locals are not impressed. He also posed naked for Cosmopolitan. 3. This singer, songwriter, civil rights activist, actress, and pianist was the daughter of a Baptist minister and first found success as a gospel singer before becoming a soul superstar. She sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King and the inauguration of Barack Obama. 4. This British TV presenter and radio DJ found fame on a game show where contestants ran around a supermarket filling their trolleys. 5. This spectacularly bright scientist had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease that gradually paralysed him over the decades, but even after the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device, initially through use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.
7. It looks like the perfect robbery until the getaway vehicle tries to negotiate a tricky bend.
“Hang on a minute lads. I’ve got a great idea.” 8. A criminal with cannibal tendencies makes a long-distance call to remind the detective on his trail that he is still very much at large... and up to his old tricks.
“I do wish we could chat longer but I’m having an old friend for dinner. Bye.” 9. A nightclub owner teams up with a police boss as they leave a nasty Nazi dead in a foggy airport. They fly away to join the Free French Army in West Africa.
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” 10. An eccentric scientist has invented a time-travelling car.
“Where we’re going we don’t need roads.”
Quote...Unquote Who made the news in 2018 with the following snappy soundbites?
16. “I’m not sure I’ll ever wear a waistcoat again.” 17. “Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his, and my button works!”
Sing a song of Christmas Most of us will find ourselves singing carols at some stage over the festive period, but can you use the clues below to identify these festive favourites.
11. Which famous Christmas song sends tidings of comfort and joy? 12. When did Good King Wenceslas last look out? 13. What type of pudding do the carollers sing about in We Wish You a Merry Christmas? 14. Which famous Christmas carol ends with the words: ‘Hosanna in excelsis!’ 15. What type of tree is mentioned in The Twelve Days of Christmas?
18. “A decade after the financial crash, people need to know that the austerity it led to is over and that their hard work has paid off.” 19. “There was something about putting this hat on that made me feel like Superman.” 20. “Some of us are mountain climbers but if you get to the top of your favourite mountain and you stay there, you become an observer. I want to keep climbing.”
CHRISTMAS
Light fantastic IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT TURKEY... REIGNING WESTSIDE YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR, LEWIS PLATT, COOKS CHRISTMAS DINNER WITH A TWIST. BY RHIANA HUGHES.
Photography: Mark Rodgers
hristmas is considered one of the most special times of the year for a lot of us. A time to catch up with loved ones you might not have seen in a while, relax on the sofa with a drink in hand and fall in and out of sleep while a re-run you’ve probably seen a hundred times plays on the telly. While there’s a lot to love about Christmas, it can be a stressful time too, especially for whoever’s drawn the short straw as chef. If it’s up to you to feed what can feel like an army, you’re probably already thinking of ways to cut down the time you’ll spend in the kitchen, but one thing you likely haven’t considered is that there’s more than one option on Christmas Day than a big turkey dinner. It may well be blasphemy to some as we’ve been eating turkey on Christmas Day since the 16th century, but times are changing and family-time is as important as ever, so why spend the day in the
C
84 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
kitchen when you could spend it with those closest to you instead? If you really can’t imagine sitting down to anything other than a hearty roast after two or three glasses of bucks fizz, why not cook up something simple yet special on the night before Christmas instead? We paid a visit to Brocco on the Park where reigning Westside Young Chef of the Year, Lewis Platt, gave us his take on what would make a great alternative Christmas meal. “You want something light, you don’t want something heavy or too hard to make,” said Lewis, when asked why this would make the perfect alternative Christmas menu. Lewis shared with us a three-course meal that’s bound to make any mouth water and will surely go down a treat whether you’re hosting a family feast or one just for the grown-ups. It might seem like three courses is a
lot to take on, but these three recipes are quick and easy to follow, and none of them call for long lists of hard to find ingredients. Everything you’ll need to put together this impressive meal can be found at your local supermarket, and if you think you’ll be pushed for time during the busiest days of the festive period, a lot of this menu can be prepped beforehand (Lewis even tells us that the fondant is even better if left chilled for a day or two). So if you can’t face another Christmas trying to remember who does and doesn’t like sprouts and whether or not goose fat really will make for the perfect roast potato, set aside a couple of hours to prepare something different, and spend the rest of your time enjoying the company of those around you. Lewis’s recipes are designed to serve four, but can easily be amended if you’re cooking for a larger group.
CHRISTMAS
Celeriac, apple and hazelnut soup STARTER
A fresh way to start off the meal, this soup is easy to make and uses only five ingredients, so won’t break the bank. Serve with some fresh (homemade if you’re a keen baker) bread and a glass of Chablis – Brocco recommend the Vincent Tremblay Chablis as its nutty taste perfectly complements the flavours of the soup. Ingredients 1 onion 3 garlic cloves 2 celeriac 3 granny smith apples 1 litre vegetable stock
To serve 50g peeled and toasted hazelnuts 1 granny smith apple, thinly sliced Pea shoots Method 1. Finely chop the onion. 2. Crush the garlic cloves. 3. Sweat the onion and garlic slowly in a heavy-based saucepan until soft and tender. 4. Peel the celeriac and dice into 1cm cubes, then add to the onion and garlic and cover with vegetable stock, bring to the boil. 5. Dice the apple and add to the pan, then simmer until the celeriac is tender. 6. Blitz the soup until smooth. 7. To serve, sprinkle with toasted hazelnuts and garnish with the sliced apple and a few pea shoots. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 85
MAIN COURSE
Pan fried seabass with chestnut and smoked bacon fricassee, artichoke purée and cavolo nero This dish is sure to impress your guests as its delicate presentation gives the illusion you’ve been slaving away for hours when in actual fact, all three courses only take about an hour and a half to make in total. Great on its own but even better when paired with a light red wine. Brocco suggest a Cotes du Rhone such as the Reserve de l’Abbe to really bring out the flavours of the dish. Ingredients 4 seabass fillets 50g butter For chestnut and smoked bacon fricassee 100g chestnuts 4 rashers bacon 2 shallots 86 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
100g cavolo nero 1 lemon Pinch of sugar For artichoke purée 500g Jerusalem artichokes 500ml milk To serve Artichoke crisps Pea shoots Method 1. Peel the artichokes and dice into 1cm cubes, then place into a saucepan, cover with milk and bring to the boil. Cook until soft, and then blitz and set aside until needed. 2. Place the chestnuts into an ovenproof tray and roast for 30 minutes at 200°C, then peel once roasted. 3. Finely dice the shallots and sauté in a frying pan.
4. Cut the bacon into strips and add to the frying pan with the shallots and cook until crispy. 5. Cut the chestnuts into quarters and add to the pan. 6. Remove the stalks from the cavolo nero, then add to the pan with the rest of the fricassee mixture, adding the sugar and lemon zest, then sauté until soft. 7. While the fricassee is cooking, start to fry the seabass over a medium heat, skin side down until the skin is crispy. 8. When the skin is crispy (the fish will be 95 per cent cooked) turn over and cook for another minute. 9. To make the artichoke crisps, thinly slice on a mandolin then fry in a deep fat fryer at 150°C until pale brown and crispy. 10. To serve, place the purée around the plate, add the fricassee to the middle of the plate and place the fish on top, adding the artichoke crisps and pea shoots.

Chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream DESSERT
We’ve all ordered a rich chocolate fondant as an after dinner treat at one point or another and wondered how on earth the chefs managed to get that perfect molten centre. Turns out, it’s not as tricky as we thought if you follow Lewis’s simple steps. Ingredients 200g sugar 4 whole eggs 4 egg yolks 200g butter 200g self-raising flour 200g dark chocolate For the mould 50g soft butter 100g cocoa
To serve Vanilla ice cream Fresh raspberries Method 1. Line your Dariole moulds by brushing the insides with butter, then coating with cocoa powder. Freeze and repeat. 2. Whisk the whole eggs, egg yolks and sugar until the mixture doubles in size and is pale in colour. 3. Place the butter and chocolate into a heatproof bowl and melt over a bain-marie. 4. Once melted, pour the chocolate mixture over the egg mixture and mix until combined, then fold in the self-raising flour. 5. Pour the mixture into the moulds threequarters of the way and bake for 8 minutes at 180°C. 6. Serve with vanilla ice cream and fresh raspberries.

Oughtibridge Village Made draws in the crowds With Christmas just around the corner, some residents of Oughtibridge were working like elves to get themselves ready for the annual Christmas market, Village Made. With over a dozen stalls stocking all manner of handmade delights, such as sweet smelling soaps, brilliantly decorative baubles and candles, jewellery and tasty treats, everything for sale was produced locally. Village Made has been running for almost a decade now and interest in it certainly hasn’t wavered as time has progressed. This year, well over a hundred people braved the bitter weather to attend the market held in Oughtibridge Chapel on a Thursday evening at the end of November. There was something there for people of all ages. Christmas-themed crafting workshops were available for adults and children, with both of which being fully booked up in advance. Traditional festive themed snacks and refreshments like mince pies and mulled wine were also on offer to keep the customers content. Not forgetting Oughtibridge brass band, who accompanied the proceedings with some Christmas tunes to add to the already lively atmosphere. Founder and co-organiser of Village Made, Kristen Berry, strongly believes that there is still a place for this type of community event. 88 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Crawshaw’s Butchers was founded by John’s father Brian when he opened their first shop in Stocksbridge in 1955. Even as a schoolboy, much of John’s spare time was spent working in the shop. “I always seemed to be working there,” he recalls. John’s Saturday job in the shop was cleaning and washing down, from there he progressed to burger making. His ‘apprenticeship’ swiftly developed into accompanying Brian to the wholesale market to select and purchase meat. In fact, you could say that his eye for quality and attention to detail in meat and food preparation is in is DNA. There are now also three directors as part of the Crawshaw team. Wayne Barker, married with two teenage sons, has worked at John Crawshaw’s for 23 years and you can usually find him in the Hillsborough shop. Wayne is a big football fan and an accomplished junior soccer coach. Rob Howe is a local lad who has worked at John Crawshaw’s for over 14 years, during which time he has learned his trade and progressed through the ranks. Outside work, Rob is a dedicated family man with children Sophie and George to keep him busy – when he gets chance, Rob also enjoys gardening and keep fit. Dean Heathcote has over 26 years’ service with John Crawshaw, another member of our team that has been with the business “man and boy”. Now a proud grandad, Dean enjoys a game of darts, a glass of beer and walking his dogs. John Crawshaw says: “We strive to provide the finest locally farmed meats which are prepared to the highest standards by our highly skilled team. Plus we make a wide range of lovingly prepared home produce that tastes as good as it looks.” Stocksbridge (Deli) 0114 288 2818; Hillsborough 0114 285 5200; Fox Valley 0114 283 8294; Chapeltown 0114 246 0808.

Bumford’s have taken on their newest apprentice, 19year old Allan Laurent from Anger in western France. Allan has come to England on a three-week placement along with a group of French plumbing apprentices. The aim of the visit is to help teach the students about the UK plumbing and heating industry. While in the UK, Allan will shadow the Bumford’s engineers visiting and working in homes throughout South Yorkshire. Away from work, cultural visits have been planned to York and Leeds. MD Neil Bumford said: “Bumford’s have for many years welcomed French apprentices into our business. We are proud to maintain working links with the continent. Allan will work with our engineers learning about the industry in the UK and our engineers will gain an understanding of plumbing across the channel.”
Healing power Healing Rooms at Hillsborough Arena are having a free-drop-in on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12noon (closed 11 December to1 January inclusive). All are welcome.

Budget 2018 – in summary id you know that the Budget in October 2018 was held on a Monday for the first time since 1962? It was moved forward to avoid clashing with the EU negotiations around Brexit. If you missed the 2018 Autumn Budget or unsure of the changes, here’s a breakdown of key announcements that will be introduced soon: • VAT registration threshold is frozen at £85,000 until April 2022. • There will be an extension of the off-payroll rule to the private sector from April 2020. • From April 2019, the personal allowance will be £12,500 and the higher rate threshold moves to £50,000. • Principle Private Residence (PPR) relief exemption will be reduced from 18 months to nine months from April 2020. • From April 2020, landlords will no longer be able to claim lettings relief when they sell their property, except where the owner of the property has a lodger living with them. • The minimum period throughout which the qualifying conditions for when Entrepreneur’s Relief must be met, is to be extended from 12 months to 24 months from April 2019. • There will be various changes to tax relief on purchases of business assets and the construction of business premises. The National Living Wage, which applies to employees 25 and over, has gone up from £7.83 to £8.21, and the National Minimum Wage, for those up to school-leaving age, has gone from £7.38 to £7.70 for 21-24-year-olds, £5.90 to £6.15 for 18-20-year-olds, £4.20 to £4.35 for 16-17-year-olds and £3.70 to £3.90 for apprentices. There were a few things that were expected to change, but stayed the same: • The Corporation Tax rate will remain staying at 19 per cent and changing to 17 per cent in 2020. • There are no changes to pension relief, except the lifetime allowance for pension savings will increase inline with CPI for 2019/20, rising to £1,055,000. • Making Tax Digital (MTD) wasn’t mentioned, so will go ahead as planned for VAT returns, on or after 1 April 2019.

MOTORING
THESE NEW CARS MAKE A BIG IMPRESSION THIS MONTH, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Close to perfection Feast your eyes on this Christmas treat – say hello to the newly face-lifted Audi R8. Things just got a whole lot more serious. The current generation Audi R8 was near perfect, but somehow the Audi engineers have made the new R8 even better. The base model will come with increased performance, 562hp to be precise. The top of the range V10 Performance model will have an increased power hike up to 612hp. The 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 is the same as before but uprated power and torque figures make this the fastest R8 to date. The suspension has been fiddled with too to make the driving experience even more of an event. Audi has nailed the aesthetics. Purposeful yet classy. UK ordering expected early 2019.
Small but practical Say hello to the newest, and smallest SUV VW currently produce – the T-Cross. Being slightly smaller than the T-Roc, the T-Cross is targeting an audience for the likes to carry five people in comfort, be extremely practical yet extremely compact while still living the SUV lifestyle. The new T-Cross has a choice of four turbocharged engines: three petrol and one diesel. A 94hp and 113hp 1.0-litre threecylinder petrol unit, a 148hp 1.5-litre four-pot petrol, and a 94hp 1.6-litre fourcylinder TDI. Already included as standard equipment are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System, the lane keeping assistant Lane Assist, Hill Start Assist, the proactive occupant protection system, and the Blind Spot Detection lane system.
Magnificent X7 Are you finding that looking for a big, luxurious, commanding SUV is too difficult? Well BMW thinks it has the answer with this, the all-new X7. Being the top of the range X-Series variant, X7 has high expectations to fulfil, but in true BMW fashion, it won’t let you down. From the outside the X7 is a purposeful looking machine, but purposeful in terms of practicality too, because the X7 has three rows of seats with the rear most containing two full-size seats. Something which is such a luxury for the larger families amongst us. Three engines will be available from launch, a six-cylinder petrol and two sixcylinder diesels. The X7 will be on sale from April 2019 with a starting price of £72,115. 94 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Classic appeal Do you like your car to be a go anywhere, utilitarian vehicle with a history to boot? Then look no further than the all-new Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler has been around for years and years but, like the Land Rover Defender, it has a cult following and having the option of old school design with up to date technology is a real appeal for some. Starting at £44,495, the Wrangler will come with two engines, a 2.0litre turbocharged in-line four unit and a 2.2-litre Multijet II turbo diesel engine. As always, the Wrangler will be four-wheel drive and the transmission is an eight-speed automatic, making life that much easier for us folk.

ChipsAway
Smithy Garage Motor Services
Road salt, sleet and snow that comes with winter can inflict a lot of damage to your car’s paint finish, making it more susceptible to rust and corrosion. So how do you protect your car’s finish this winter? Using a car wax, getting chipped paintwork sorted before the temperature drops and vinyl wrapping can all help, as can washing your car regularly and brushing, rather than
scraping ice and snow off your car. Established over 20 years and as the originators of minor automotive paint repair technology, ChipsAway have built a fantastic reputation for providing high quality repairs, eliminating the inconvenience and potential expense of using a body shop. Contact them for a free estimate today.
With the expense of Christmas, why pay dealer prices for servicing and repairs? Keep your warranty and visit Smithy Garage this winter and they will even collect and deliver your vehicle. Their services include servicing repairs and diagnostics on all vehicles including 4x4s, MOT pretests, exhausts, tyres, electronic braking repairs, installation of HID headlights and front and rear sensor system fittings.
