PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: s many of us were getting into the swing of the new year, finishing off the Christmas chocolates and maybe even attempting a dry January, Chapeltown personal trainer Adam Copley was finding a novel way to beat the January blues. On a freezing weekend last month, he and pal Ricky Staniforth took on the Three Peaks Challenge. In just over 24 hours, they climbed the UK’s biggest mountains – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – and, thankfully, lived to tell the tale. You can read all about their adventures on page 40. If you fancy an excursion of your own, take inspiration from our hen and stag party feature on page 34. Fiona Barber looks at the most lavish ways to spend your last nights of freedom. If you’ve ever fantasised about hiring your own luxurious island, look no further. We’ve also discovered how countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day (page 26). So, when you’re treating your mum to the English traditions of chocolates and flowers on 15 March, why not throw in a few of these more unusual customs too? If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email pulse@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk. Have a great month!

PROMOTIONBUMFORD HEATING LTD Managing director Neil Bumford
The ‘thank you’ cards they receive after each job is testament to the standard of service and craftmanship on offer at Bumford Heating Ltd. here are few more welcome feelings on a chilly winter day than the thought of stepping through the door of your toasty warm home. Unfortunately, this cosy little dream can be shattered in an instant if your boiler is not up to the task. Preventing failings and assisting with breakdowns if they do occur, Bumford Heating Ltd is on hand to help. Now-retired plumber Chris Bumford established the business in 1968 and today it remains a family firm. Chris’ son Neil, who joined in the mid-1990s after university, has now taken over from his father as managing director. Neil’s sister Anna replaced their mum as finance director, their brother Robin is installation manager and sister Beth is office administrator. Joined by an experienced, friendly and professional team, they offer a host of plumbing and heating services to homes and businesses throughout Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Over the years they have served hundreds of thousands of customers and, as a result, now enjoy a well-deserved reputation as a trustworthy and reliable local company. With a considerable amount of repeat business and word of mouth recommendations to friends and family members, chances are you’ll already know someone who uses and approves the Bumford service. “We receive thank you cards from almost every job we attend,” says Neil proudly. “We know how important good customer service and craftsmanship is – in addition to high quality products such as Worcester boilers, for which we are an accredited installer – so standards are, and always have been, kept very high.” In addition to all plumbing, heating and boiler work – including installation, service and repair – they also offer underfloor heating, solar hot water systems, bathrooms, electricals, lighting and drainage. Smart controls are also gaining popularity. Integrated into an existing system and controlled using your smart phone, they ensure your home is only heated when you want it to be – the ideal solution to modern, busy living. With more than 60 per cent of your energy bill being spent on heating, it pays to introduce a super efficient system that costs less than you may think to install. For peace of mind, they are proud to be Gas Safe, HETAS (solid fuel) and Oftec (oil) registered and they offer full comprehensive warranties. To make the expense of a new boiler easier to bear, finance is available. Adding further to 46 years of success as a local business,

Wortley Hall’s The Ruddy Duck restaurant relaunched Refurbished and re-launched in 2014, Wortley Hall’s Ruddy Duck restaurant has been earning a reputation as the new local fine dining experience. With seating for 30 people and an open kitchen, the restaurant has a charming and cosy atmosphere. It is located in the main hall but is open to non-residents and has its own entrance. Its aim is to showcase the best of Yorkshire ingredients cooked with a modern twist. Head chef Matt Robinson and his team are proud of the seasonal menus they produce. The new menu includes popular starters such as pan-fried king scallops with Serrano ham, roast pumpkin puree and roast garlic oil followed by slow-cooked lamb with sweet potato and baby leeks and, to finish, a tonka bean crème brûlée with Yorkshire rhubarb and gingerbread. The launch of the new restaurant is just part of the ongoing refurbishment of this well-loved ex stately home. With 49 bedrooms, a lounge, a bar and function rooms, the hall still operates as a non-profit venue with all the revenue earned directly going to ensure the future of this beautiful house and gardens. The Ruddy Duck is open to all from Tuesday to Saturday, 6-9pm. Booking is advisable and reservations can be made by calling 0114 288 2100.
Passenger power wins new bus stop A petition in Grenoside has secured a vital new stop for the M92 bus. Elderly passengers successfully campaigned for the bus, which runs between Harley and Fox Hill, to extend its route to include Grenoside crematorium. The petition, signed by 618 people, persuaded South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to alter the route. The changes came into effect on 23 January.
£10.8m construction centre starting to take shape Work is well under way on the new £10.8million construction centre at Barnsley College’s Honeywell campus. Beat the light blues with Martyn Kemp Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO) has highlighted ways to reduce the damaging effects on eyes of excessive exposure to the blue light that is emitted by the sun and artificial light sources. Research has shown that exposure to too much blue light, particularly in the evening, from LEDs, computers, mobile phones, some TVs, fluorescent tubes and low energy light bulbs can cause migraines, sleeping problems and slight depression. Prolonged exposure can also contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration. There are two solutions. One is to wear spectacles that block blue light. In one study, people who wore them for three hours before bedtime reported major improvements in their sleep patterns and reduced the after-effects of cataract operations. Martyn Kemp said: “In the past, blue-blocking lenses have had to be tinted, but now MKO can provide a clear coated lens to a patient’s own spectacle prescription that blocks out blue light and UV, giving the best eye protection possible.” The alternative is to take a diet supplement called Macushield, which builds up the pigment that protects the eye’s macular – the part of the eye providing clear and detailed central vision. Macushield tablets are available at MKO. Visit www.mko.co.uk for more information.

The Friends of Chapeltown and High Green Parks have received funding for local biodiversity sites. With £1,950 from the First TransPennine Express Green Grants scheme – in collaboration with the Forestry Commission – improvements will be made to the Oxley Orchard (pictured) in Chapeltown Park. After the turf is removed and rotivated, holes will be dug to make way for fruit trees to be planted before wildflower seeds are sowed in the spring. “We are very pleased indeed to have received the grant for our project,” said secretary Doris Denton. “The planting work and renovation will have a very positive effect on the local community. Working closely with surrounding schools and organisations means that all of the work we do is personal to the area. An official opening is planned for August.

PULSEEATING OUT
ON A WINNER
Dining at the new-look Napoleons is a surefire bet, says Chris Wilson. asino rule number one: the house always wins. However, with the array of dining offers available at Napoleons in Owlerton, the odds, for once, are most definitely stacked in the punter’s favour. I’ve always been a big fan of the food in their sister restaurant on Ecclesall Road so it came as no surprise to discover that the S6 venue maintains the same high culinary standards – and following last year’s £2million refurb it looks particularly swanky too. As for those deals, there is a surefire winner on the menu to suit every occasion. For example, from Sunday to Thursday, a fixed price of £17 for two courses, and £19 for three, is a real steal. Then there is the popular Dine in Style offer, with three courses, a drink and a £5 gaming chip for £22. February brings the Winter Warmer – any two courses and a £5 chip for just £13.95; and for those who fancy a flutter where you genuinely can’t lose but might win big, all Thursday diners can play Spin to Win. Simply spin the roulette ball when you’ve finished dining and whatever number your ball lands on will be the percentage discount from your food bill. Regulars at the tables will know that could be up to 36 per cent. It could also be a big fat zero, but even then you don’t lose, so let’s just stay in a positive mindset here. All these deals don’t count for much if the food isn’t up to scratch of course – but we took the Dine in Style option and Napoleons definitely delivered. The menu changes monthly and, with six starters and six mains as well as a selection from the grill, there is certainly no shortage of choice. After a delicious selection of warm breads, my meal started with the Napoleons classic prawn cocktail; some recipes are too good to be messed around with. Juicy prawns, tangy cocktail sauce, crisp lettuce... simply delicious. My companion’s plaice goujons, with a smoked salmon tartar sauce, brought more big flavours; this was an excellent start to our meal. For mains my thick and juicy pork loin cutlet was beautifully complemented by sautéed apple and fennel in a grain mustard and cream sauce. Every mouthful was to be savoured. If my main course proved that the kitchen could tackle cheffy dishes with aplomb, across the table there was another example of ‘back to basics’ cuisine at its very best. From the grill, a very generous fillet steak was cooked medium-rare to order with handcut chips, grilled tomato, mushrooms and onion rings. Only steak and chips, you say? Maybe, but - done this well - it is impossible to resist. Desserts maintained the high standards. A white chocolate &

RINGERS RECALLED Readers remember the days when this handbell team was a big noise in Ecclesfield. Words: Stephanie Burns he photograph of the Ecclesfield Handbell Ringers in last month’s issue elicited memories from many of our readers. Richard Salt, a former Ecclesfield resident who now lives in Grenoside, is featured on the far right of the picture as a 15-yearold boy. At the time the photo was taken, he’d been performing with the group for around six years and remembers practising in the classroom of Ecclesfield School on Sunday mornings. “I was so young at the beginning,” he says, “that they used to get a thick piece of wood from the woodwork classroom next door for me to stand on. I stayed for around 15 or 20 years and it was a joyous time.” The third person from the left is Richard’s cousin, Cedric Bettney, who now lives in Rotherham. Richard also recognises Anthony Cooper (far left), Ken Gregory Snr (second from left), Albert Braybrook (fourth from left), Winnie Lester (sixth from left), conductor Granville Mitchell (sixth from right), Eileen Taylor (fifth from right), Conrad Gregory (fourth from right), Albert Kay (third from right) and Ken Gregory Jnr (second from right) James Kay of Cross Hill in Ecclesfield was pleased to see his grandfather Albert Kay featured. He has the same photograph, which was passed on through the family after Albert’s death, along with another piece of memorabilia. “I’ve got my grandfather’s old handbell, which was presented to him when he retired,” he says. “The club also has an older picture from 1919 that has my grandfather’s older brother Frank in too.” James grew up in the 1960s and remembers Albert playing until the early 1970s, by which point he’d been a member for many years.

John Brewitt recognised two of his former Ecclesfield School science teachers in the photo – Anthony Cooper and Granville Mitchell. “I was there from 1958 to 1965 and, at the time, I never knew they were handbell ringers,” he says. Leader of the ringers since around 1980, Hazel Bradney (nee Lowe), was also able to identify Raymond Ryalls (fifth from left), who has now moved to the south of England. She says: “Along with my friend Maureen Dewhurst (nee Hobson), I joined in 1964, having rung at Ecclesfield Grammar School for three years. We have performed all over the country, at some national and even international handbell ringing events, to standing ovations.” The Ecclesfield carol concert is still as popular as ever, and this year takes place on Saturday 12 December. PULSEMOTHER’S DAY
All over the world, people are preparing to show their mothers how much they care…but how do other countries mark Mothering Sunday? Hannah Pearson finds out. other’s Day is coming – Sunday 15 March if you need reminding – which means it’s time to start thinking about what gift will surprise Mum and what you can do to show her how much you care. The tradition of dedicating a day to celebrating how fantastic our mums are dates back centuries – but did you know that England was the first country in the world to dedicate a day for mothers way back in the 1600s? Mother’s Day celebrations in the UK take place on the fourth Sunday of the Christian fasting period of Lent. Since the Lent days are not fixed, the date changes every year. Mother’s Day came to be celebrated in the UK in the 17th century. It was known as Mothering Sunday and can be traced back to medieval times when children from poor families were sent to work as domestic servants and apprentices in rich households. Once a year during Lent, these children were given a day off to visit their home church and worship the Virgin Mary. After returning to the church of their home town, they would then see their mothers, usually for the first time in months. It was customary to present their mum with flowers they had picked along the way or make a rich almond cake, known as Mothering Cake or Simnel Cake. The holiday even used to be known as Refreshment Sunday because the strict Lent fasting rules were put aside for the day. Today, the original meaning of Mothering Sunday has been lost and Mother’s Day in the UK is similar to that of other countries, where children usually give gifts of flowers and chocolates. The tradition of Mothering Sunday stopped with the advent of the industrial revolution when work and life patterns changed and the religious connection has long died out. However, the day is still celebrated in March to coincide with Lent, unlike the majority of other countries which celebrate it in May. As one of spring’s biggest gifting events, last year Mother’s Day was estimated to be worth over £400million to the gifts and greetings cards industry in the UK. But how does the rest of the world celebrate mothers on this special day? Happy Mother's Day. Feliz DÍa de las Madres. Furaha ya Mama Siku. It doesn't matter how you say it, the sentiment is the same.
M
The USA – Sunday 10 May Much the same as the UK, Mother’s Day in the United States is a highly commercial holiday and traditions generally include treats like breakfast in bed, flowers, cards or going out for a meal. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and became a national holiday in 1914.

Sunday 10 May
Muttertag takes place on the second Sunday of May – unless it falls on Pentecost, in which case it moves to the first Sunday of the month. During World War II, the holiday took on political significance as the day to acknowledge women for producing children. Medals were awarded in gold, silver or bronze based upon how many children were in a household.
In Australia it is tradition to wear a carnation (right) on Mother’s Day – a coloured carnation signifies that a person’s mother is alive while a white carnation is used to honour a deceased mum. The holiday stretches beyond immediate family though, with Australian children giving gifts to their aunts, grandmothers and other women who care for them.
France – Sunday 31 May In France, Fête des Mères is reserved for the last Sunday in May – although it occurs in early June if Pentecost is the same day. It didn't become an official day of celebration until 1950, but was originally declared a holiday by Napoleon. A family meal is the norm and traditionally the mother is presented with a floral cake.
The Peruvian Mother Earth goddess Pachamama
India – Sunday 10 May The concept of celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May is relatively new in India. The holiday has grown in popularity in the last ten years and is now commercialised to a big extent in cities such as Delhi. Hindus in India also celebrate the goddess Durga, or Divine Mother, during a ten-day festival called Durga Puja in October.
Spain – Sunday 3 May Things are done a little differently in Spain, where DÍa de las Madres is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May. On this day, Spaniards pay tribute not only to their own mothers but also to the Virgin Mary (pictured) and the day includes religious celebrations across the country.
Thailand – Wednesday 12 August Mother's Day in Thailand is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit of Thailand (left), as she is regarded as mother to all Thai people. The holiday was first celebrated in 1976 and is observed as a national holiday. Father's Day is celebrated on the King's birthday – 5 December.
Peru – Sunday 10 May A commercialised Mother’s Day is celebrated in Peru on the second Sunday in May. But much of Peru's indigenous Andean population also celebrates the gifts of Mother Earth, or Pachamama, in early August. Pachamama is an ancient mythological goddess who is revered as the bringer of fertility. Her special worship day is called Martes de Challa. A mariachi band plays Las Mañanitas
Mexico – Sunday 10 May Mother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on the fixed date of 10 May, unlike most countries where the date changes every year. According to custom, sons and daughters spend time at home with their mothers the evening before Mother’s Day. The day is then celebrated with great enthusiasm as churches organise a special mass, an orchestra plays Las Mañanitas and the traditional morning meal of tamales and atole is distributed to all local mothers.

THE LAST HURRAH From gastronomic tours to relaxing spa retreats, Fiona Barber looks at the changing face of the stag and hen do. he days of grooms-to-be waking up minus clothes or dignity and of brides-to-be decorated with learner plates, tiaras and garters are long gone. Over the last decade, traditional stag and hen parties – the debauched soirées of brides and grooms – have become
T
more sophisticated and less booze based. For ladies, the industry has even invented a new phrase for it: a swan party. With more hens and stags opting for a weekend of relaxation, or adventure and entertainment, instead of a night of drunken table dancing, the stakes
are higher than ever. Organising the event in question comes with immense pressure. So, if you are feeling the strain or are stuck for ideas, then read on for Pulse’s suggestions of how to keep your stags, hens, brides and grooms entertained on the trip of a lifetime.
Spas If relaxing in a Jacuzzi ‘til you wrinkle like a prune, being slathered in mud, and massaged until you’re knot-free is your idea of heaven – then a spa break is the answer. Despite Croatia being well known for its gorgeous coastlines and historical past, hidden away in the hills are numerous toplice – thermal spas or hot springs. Though popular year round, thermal spas are especially appropriate once the temperature falls, inviting you to seek relief from the cold in warm, health-boosting pools. When you’re tired of soaking, enjoy a healing mud treatment. This mineral-enriched mud, with a temperature of about 40 degrees, is thickly spread over the body and, after several minutes, is washed off with mineral water. If you’re not a fan of the mud there are plenty other massages and spa treatments to choose from. wellbeingescapes.com thehealthyholidaycompany.co.uk

Skiing For those looking for a bit of action – no not that kind – hitting the slopes could be the perfect way to spend the days, before returning to a luxurious chalet. It doesn’t matter if some members of the group have never skied before – classes are available to get to grips with the basic skills and the more experienced in the group can help others out – a fantastic way to exercise, bond and have fun. The French Alps have long been a favourite destination for British skiers looking for a luxurious ski holiday. With a fine choice of exclusive hotels, sumptuous private chalets, excellent ski opportunities and facilities and stylish in-resort boutiques, it isn’t hard to see why. On a luxury skiing holiday to France, you can choose from a number of options. Whether you like your skiing to come with plenty of scope and accessibility, such as those of Les Trois Valees – the world’s largest skiing area – and L’ Espace Killy, or you prefer the more varied terrain of places like Chamonix and Megeve, you’ll not be disappointed. The laid-back continental atmosphere certainly adds to the appeal an, in true French style, the appreciation of fine cuisine and leisurely lunches play an important part of any visit to the region. crystalski.co.uk/luxury-ski-holidays elegantresorts.co.uk
Hire an island Finding your own slice of paradise for the perfect stag or hen party is no easy task. Locating a destination that offers plenty of adventure, cool drinks and a good serving of sunshine for a completely exclusive getaway is difficult – but what about hiring an island that is exclusively yours? Think Castaway in Tahiti, first-class luxury in the Bahamas, or enjoy the tropical climate of Florida. Arrive in style in a helicopter, snorkel with tropical fish, enjoy a range of water sports, play tennis. Do whatever you like really, because there’s just you, your party and a few helping hands – like your own private chef – to ensure this is the best holiday ever. stagweb.co.uk rent.privateislandsonline.com
Drink For lovers of fine wine, a tasting holiday could be just what you’re looking for. Choose a tour that includes special visits to the cellars of winemakers and be treated to private tastings with the winemakers themselves. Enjoy gourmet and regional food, deliciously matched to the wines. Experience dining as a private guest at a bodega, winery or renowned Bordeaux chateau – one of the ultimate experiences that you can have on a wine tour – and be guided by one of the world’s great experts to the ‘unvisitable’ domaines in Burgundy. In France, visit the beautiful vineyards of Alsace as well as Rhone or Burgundy, and drink luxurious bubbles in Champagne. In Italy, visit top growers in Trentino, Sicily or Tuscany. Or perhaps you’d rather go to Chile, look at the origin of wine in Georgia, or explore Barolo’s cru vineyards on a vineyard walk in Piedmonte. Wherever you go, you’re sure to discover and experience a new side of wine you never knew existed. You’ll return home a master of smelling and swilling, and will be able to impress friends with your knowledge on food and wine matching.
Eat If food needs to take centre stage, a gourmet holiday – where you’ll discover how some mouth-watering ingredients are produced, taste regional specialities and explore the delights of gourmet restaurants – is ideal. Visit producers of local speciality food and gain an insight into how they are made or found. Grasp the rare opportunity to go truffle hunting in Piedmonte. As well as tasting the produce, don’t forget to buy some goodies to take home in order to be able to re-create some of these wonderful flavours in your own kitchens. At meals, taste the best regional wines that match the food. Gourmet tours don’t necessarily mean an endless stream of high-class restaurants – it can equally be excellent fresh, local produce prepared in a traditional way. activegourmetholidays.com gourmetontour.com

PROMOTIONHILLSBOROUGH GOLF CLUB
Hillsborough Golf Club has broken down the barriers to make one of the city’s leading courses available to everyone – whatever their ability. t’s traditionally the preferred club of Sheffield Wednesday players and, since its inception in 1920, has built a reputation as one of the city’s top golf courses. Both players and professionals consider its opening three holes the toughest in the country. It’s fair to say, then, that Hillsborough Golf Club has a well-deserved reputation as one of the region’s most prestigious courses. But thanks to current captains Mark Rabjohn and Sue Priest, who have made it their mission to break down old-fashioned traditions, there is now a whole lot more to this historical club than meets the eye. And they are encouraging everyone of every age to come and see the changes that have been made. One of the most significant transformations is the acceptance of female players. Embracing the Equality Act of 2010 with great confidence, Hillsborough was one of the first clubs to allow men and women to play together. Now, they host joint captain’s days, ladies are invited to play on President’s Day, and all adult members pay the same fees. They’ve also made it much easier for the younger generation to get involved. “The jump from junior to full adult membership was too big and many younger players simply couldn’t afford to keep playing,” explained Sue. “We’ve introduced an incremental scheme between the ages of 21 and 30 so membership fees
I
gradually increase each year. This makes it far more manageable.” Some of the juniors are so talented they have even been Spring open d invited to play in the men’s first everyone welcoay – team. One – 18-year-old Jonathan Keep a look-oume t Thompson – has even signed to the for details England Boys’ team. The social side of the club has also improved dramatically thanks in no small part to the introduction of a new caterer two years ago. The Sunday lunch, open to all from 12noon to 3pm, features a full carvery with all the trimmings at £9 for one, £11 for two and £13 for three courses. The Christmas party nights with dinner and entertainment were a huge hit with both members and the public too, and there are plenty of other events throughout the year. Out in the open air, Mark has also worked incredibly hard with the green staff to improve the already outstanding greens and fairways and, as a result, players have access to fast greens all year round. “I have played hundreds of courses around the world and I can honestly say that Hillsborough is the perfect test of golf,” said Mark. “There is every type of hole you can imagine and that presents a fantastic challenge for seasoned pros while being the ideal training ground for beginners. Being 500ft above sea level, the views out towards Bradfield are unbeatable too.” To test the course for yourself, why not take advantage of the pay-and-play facility? For just £25 a head (£100 per four ball) until 31 March, you can enjoy a bacon roll and a coffee followed by a round of golf, topped off with a twocourse meal in the clubhouse. Call the club secretary on 0114 234 9151 for more information. PULSECHALLENGE
AT THE MERCY OF THE ELEMENTS Having conquered the Three Peaks Challenge once already, Adam Copley and Ricky Staniforth set out for success again – this time in the middle of winter. Stephanie Burns reports. hree mountains, two Adam (left) and Ricky ready to go idiots, one day. Not my words, but those of Chapeltown personal trainer Adam Copley who, along with friend and client Ricky Staniforth, has just embarked on an adventure that most of us wouldn’t ever dare attempt. The Three Peaks Challenge – which involves climbing the UK’s biggest mountains; Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Snowdon in Wales, within 24 hours – is hard enough on a beautiful summer’s day. But when tackled in the middle of a bitterly cold winter, mostly in the dead of night, well, that’s an entirely different scenario. Yet tackle it they did and, though they didn’t quite manage to complete the official challenge last month – for reasons beyond their control – they came incredibly close. It’s not the first time Adam and Ricky have scaled the three peaks, as they and 30 other members of Fit4It Hybrid Gym, where Adam works, took on the challenge in June last year, raising around £3,000 for local charities. It’s hard to believe but Adam insists the muggy summer weather was almost worse than the freezing cold conditions they have just endured. But it was the idea that winter would pose an even greater threat – and therefore offer a more exhilarating challenge – that motivated them to go one step further, raising money for Hallam FM’s charity Cash for Kids in the process. “We were talking one day after the Three Peaks last summer and I mentioned that it would be even harder to do it in the dark,” explains Adam. “We decided then and there to do it in January and we’ve been planning it ever since.” Though, for fitness fanatic Adam, it was merely a case of altering his already stringent exercise regime to incorporate more endurance training, it was a bigger task for formerly overweight Ricky, who has been on a transformational journey in recent years. Having slimmed down, he joined Fit4It two years ago and soon
T
signed up to Adam’s oneto-one and group training sessions. “Ricky is a brilliant guy and a real inspiration to me and the other members of our gym,” says Adam. “He initially joined after entering a 20-mile obstacle course known as the Rat Race because, although he was used to running, he needed extra strength. We’ve since become good friends.” After six months of training, they set off for Scotland with Ricky’s partner Mel as the designated driver and began climbing at 4am on the Saturday morning. Twenty-five hours later, they had reached the bottom of Snowdon, exhausted but thrilled with their achievement. The journey, however, had not been without its drama. Three hours in and half way up Ben Nevis, Adam lost his footing and slid 15 metres down the side of the mountain. “We were using all sorts of climbing gear to keep us safe but, when I swung my axe, I lost my balance and fell. I was trying to catch my axe on anything to stop me sliding and eventually I hit something and stopped.” Despite what must have been a terrifying ordeal at the time, it’s Adam’s favourite memory of the trip. But it wasn’t the only problem the pair encountered in Scotland. Shortly after the fall, a crampon broke and, unable to fix the equipment through their thick gloves, their chances of reaching the summit were scuppered. They were forced to abandon the attempt and return to Ben Nevis’ base. While Adam relished the excitement of the fall, another unexpected problem arose on their second mountain, Scafell Pike, which was less welcome. Having begun the ascent in midafternoon, just as daylight was fading, all seemed to be going well – until severe cramp hit Adam’s leg. “My leg completely locked and I couldn’t move it at all,” he explains. “That has never happened to me before and it was scary because I didn’t know how to fix it. We decided to just massage it
“It took around four-and-a-half hours for them to complete Scafell Pike, in temperatures so low that the water in their Camelbak hydration packs froze.”

Scafell Pike
out in the end and, luckily, I could carry on. I had to do the ministry of funny walks to gradually bring the feeling back though.” It took around four-and-a-half hours for them to complete Scafell Pike, in temperatures so low that the water in the tubes of their Camelbak hydration packs froze. Fortunately, this happened on the way down and they could safely continue on to Snowdon. Arriving at 1am, having battled blizzards on their journey into Wales, the pair shook with cold as they clambered into their climbing gear for the final time. “I asked Ricky how long he reckoned it would take us and he joked that we’d be back down in an hour because the weather would be too bad. “Snowdon has a false sense of security as there’s a path that seems safe and then all of a sudden there’s a really steep incline. If you fall, you fall on rocks and you can die. I was terrified and my
mind starting playing tricks on me – I could see the headlines saying that we’d fallen to our deaths. So, even though I was really tired, I knew I had to stay alert.” Were it not for the months of training, their previous experience of the mountains, and their strict preparation, the treacherous conditions could easily have turned against them. And Adam warns against attempting the challenge without conducting adequate research beforehand. “It’s so dangerous, there is no way people should consider the Three Peaks in the middle of winter without the proper equipment and preparation. We checked the weather every day in the run up to it, contacted people in Scotland to see how the weather was fairing and kept in touch with Mountain Rescue.” Adam is well versed in adventure activities, having gained a liking for them as a youngster. Though he has never done the Duke of Edinburgh, and PE was far from his favourite subject at school, he took every opportunity to get involved with the various expeditions on offer at school and college; adventure weekends, ski holidays, rock climbing and mountain biking. “Ricky calls adventure sports ‘type 2 fun’, which means it’s tough at the time but when you look back you realise you really enjoyed it. There was one moment I remember vividly in this latest challenge; we had got about half way to the top of Scafell Pike and I just thought ‘I’m really enjoying this’. “I’ve got a real taste for it now and we’re already talking about a new challenge. Mont Blanc is on Ricky’s bucket list – so I think we might have to give that a go next.” To support Adam and donate to Cash for Kids, visit www.justgiving.com/Adam-Copley-PT1.

PULSEMOTORING
Mazda’s SUV has got soul Bring forth Mazda’s first crossover SUV – the CX-3. Striking isn’t it? That’s because, like all Madzas these days, it incorporates the company’s KODO ‘soul of motion’ design. There’ll be a 2.0-litre petrol engine with two power outputs available or a 1.5-litre diesel. All engines incorporate fuel efficient SKYACTIV technology. A choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic will be offered as well as two or all-wheel drive versions. It will go on sale mid-way through the year.
Infiniti moves into hatchback market Infiniti – Nissan’s luxury division – has decided to build a premium hatch to compete against the VW Golf, Audi A3, BMW 1-Series and Mercedes A-Class. Due late this year, the Infiniti Q30 – which was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show as a concept – takes design cues from conventional hatchbacks, crossovers and coupes to make it stand out from the crowd. It’ll be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant but, ironically, it’ll be built on the same platform as the Mercedes A-Class as well as borrowing the German’s 2.0litre petrol and diesel engines. Expect a price of £20,000.
Jordan Cutforth looks into his crystal ball to see what 2015 has in store for the motoring world.
Mirai will go 300 miles on a tank…of hydrogen
Skoda’s new Fabia comes fully loaded The hotly anticipated new Skoda Fabia landed this January with an asking price of £10,600. This may seem slightly expensive, but there’s loads of standard equipment including Bluetooth, DAB digital radio and engine stop/start. Engines available will be a 1.0 litre petrol with either 59 or 74bhp, a 108bhp 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.4 litre diesel with outputs of 89bhp or 104bhp. A Greenline turbodiesel will be offered later, which will return up to 91mpg. Practicality is great with 330 litres of boot space. If you want more, there’s an estate version boasting 530 litres, which is due in March.

Arriving in September, the Toyota Mirai will be the first mainstream car to be powered by hydrogen since the Honda FCX. The benefit of using hydrogen is that a hydrogen fuel-cell produces its own electricity, which in turn powers the car rather than getting the electricity from the mains which produces CO2. Toyota predicts the Mirai will achieve 300 miles on a full fill-up. That’s much greater than electriconly cars. They also say it’ll be an ‘exhilarating drive’ with its low centre of gravity and 153bhp. Expect a price tag upwards of £60,000.
Mustang set to make its debut Ford’s global marketing strategy of ‘one-size fits all’ for its cars is definitely apparent here because from the autumn, you will finally be able to take delivery of a righthand drive Ford Mustang – a first for Britain. It’ll come with either a 5.0litre V8 producing 420bhp and 400lb ft of torque or – for the first time in a Mustang – a four-cylinder, 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit producing 310bhp and 320lb ft of torque. You can spec either with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Expect prices to start around £29,000 for the EcoBoost and a £4,000 premium hike for the V8.
Horsepower – the Ford Mustang is coming to Britain
