EDITOR’S MESSAGE: f you’ve recently become engaged, you will no doubt be poring over bridal magazines and cooing over the gorgeous designs of renowned bridal designer Ian Stuart. In our exclusive interview with Ian on page 14, I speak to him about his journey to stardom, the inspiration behind his latest collections, and why it is so important to get expert help when choosing your dress. Also shooting for the stars is 11-year-old Natasha Flounders. After wowing the audience at Sheffield City Hall’s Christmas production, she was selected by The Mastersingers, a top Northern vocal group, to sing a medley of solo songs at their musical extravaganza at Ecclesfield Parish Church in March. Find out how she feels to have been picked, and what she’s got planned for the future, on page 42. I’ve also been hearing from Pulse readers about Ecclesfield Cinema. Turn to Looking Back on page 40 to read about memories of the picture house, and to see this month’s photo. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Despite his imaginative creations having taken the bridal market by storm, there’s much more to come from designer Ian Stuart, says Stephanie Burns.

‘W

himsical, theatrical, flamboyant’. In three words, globally renowned bridal designer Ian Stuart perfectly sums up his signature style, a style that has been pored over by brides the world over for well over a decade and continues to attract great acclaim from both customer and peer. Anyone who has taken even a passing interest in fashion or bridalwear will be familiar with Ian’s creations. Boldly taking his needle and thread where few have dared to venture, his more elaborate gowns wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance painting and are often held up as the pinnacle of bridal design. Deftly focused on fit, quality, styling and detail, each piece is a work of art inspired by three of the designer’s passions: old films, coffee table books and music. I managed to grab a quick phone call with Ian at the beginning of the year as he was putting the finishing touches to his 2016/2017 collections – due for release in April – to discuss the highlights of his illustrious career. In his line of work, days are anything but typical. In and amongst the designing, his time passes by in a whirlwind of meetings with fabric suppliers, modelling agencies, sales agents and jewellery designers, all the while cataloguing and storyboarding the fabrics, laces and trimmings he collects along the way. Days after we spoke, he embarked on one of his regular fabric-finding missions in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. From a young age, Ian was given a taste of a more international lifestyle than many children are. He was born in Holland in 1967 before moving to Manchester when he was five. Growing up, he adored theatre and the arts and almost signed up to acting school. Instead, he studied design and graduated with a fashion degree from Berkshire College of Art and Design in 1989. Before the course had ended, he had already been snapped up by David Sassoon of Bellville Sassoon – a Chelsea-based couture company that has counted Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and every member of the royal family except the Queen among its loyal clientele over the years – and chose, accordingly, to specialise in wedding dresses for his final project. “It was a practical decision,” he admits. “I really wanted to do theatrical costumes but I realised that at that time there wasn’t that much work in it. Wedding dresses and eveningwear were the most similar things.” At the age of 25, he secured a job at Sweetheart Gowns – in his words, ‘a big cheesy American bridalwear company’ – where he worked for ten years, winning Wedding Dress Designer of the Year in the USA – a major achievement for an English designer – in the process. In 2002, having moved back to London, Ian set about creating his eponymous company along with fellow designer Peter Tague. “We converted a spare bedroom in the house, started up very

small, made a collection, went to show it at a show in Germany and got a full order book. At that moment it [went] from being a dream into ‘this is really tangible and we now have to finance these orders and put them into production and actually make these dresses’. So it made it very, very real.” The Collection Designed by Ian Stuart launched the following year in West Dulwich and has since earned Ian the Bridal Designer of the Year award five times. “Seeing [my own company] get off the ground was a really proud moment because I felt that finally I was free and I didn’t have the restrictions and constraints that working for another company has. You only have to answer to yourself.” Ian’s dresses aren’t for every bride; it takes a strong personality and style to pull off his more daring designs. Just take his best-ever selling flower bomb dress as a case in point. Flower bomb, which Ian describes as encompassing all the magic ‘Ian Stuart’ ingredients, Wanderlust burst onto the bridal scene in 2011 and was an instant hit. Such was its success, it featured in the 2014 wedding dress exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum alongside dresses worn by Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese and Camilla Parker Bowles. His latest collections, while still heavily featuring this signature style, have travelled in a more demure direction, with 1950sinspired short styles and dresses with smoother, cleaner silhouettes. The latter may look Â

easier to make than their frothier counterparts, but Ian admits they were even more challenging. “Those dresses look the simplest but they’re actually the most difficult because the draping is so complicated and the dresses are so plain, you can’t hide any mistakes with decorations,” he admits. In April, he’ll no doubt wow yet again with a new shape of dress that would look as good down the aisle as it would on the red carpet. Alongside these Oscar-worthy designs, he’s also been experimenting with some interesting fabric and lace Riviera takes the current collection in combinations. And his love affair with a more demure direction colour continues with some multi-coloured pastel creations that only he could pull off with style. “When a girl goes into a bridal salon, she’s given expert advice Unsurprisingly, given his passion for theatre and music, Ian’s by the sales consultants that will give her guidance and help to favourite job is presenting these new collections and showcasing eliminate the dresses that are not working for her. Fairbarn have got their eyes on success

LOUD AND PROUD Up-and-coming indie rockers Fairbarn on building a fanbase, headlining the O2 Academy… and those all-important A Levels. 26 PULSE MAGAZINE

Words: Phoebe Seymour

f you live in Stannington and often wonder where the cries of guitars and crashing of drums are coming from, you are very likely to be the neighbours of local indie band, Fairbarn. “We’ve upset a few neighbours along the way!” admits lead singer and rhythm guitarist George Johnson. “We originally practised in my conservatory – which was a bad idea. Everyone told us to turn it down. We’re up in the attic now though, so it’s all good.” George, 17, started jamming with lifelong friend Brad FurnissHall, 16, in February 2014. The boys are neighbours, so always practised at each other’s houses on Fairbarn Road in Stannington. And what better name for the band than the place where it all began? George learnt to play guitar four years ago and one day asked if Brad would like to learn some chords. Brad progressed quickly and his younger brother Charlie, 13, soon joined their jamming sessions on bass, while George played drums. Eventually George switched to singing and, after two drummers had come and gone, Chris Kitching, 16, joined the band to complete the line-up. “We met at sixth form and the dynamic was there,” says George. “Chris loves Brad and Charlie. We’re good friends and I think that

PULSEIN BRIEF

Bradfield Spring Concert will be a memorial to Heather Keith Hoyland, Bradfield Festival of Music secretary, has organised a special spring concert which will take place on Saturday 5 March, 7.30pm, at Wisewood Methodist Church. Funds raised will support the Cantamus Senior Ensemble’s world tour and the Sheffield Music Hub. As with all of Keith’s musical endeavours, his wife Heather was at his side supporting and assisting him as she had done throughout their marriage. Tragically, as festival organising was well under way last August, Heather suffered a devastating stroke and passed away shortly after. Vowing to carry on with the concert despite his world being turned upside down, Keith decided to hold it in memory of Heather and is more determined than ever to make the concert a roaring success. In addition to the Cantamus choir, the audience will be treated to performances by the talented City of Sheffield Senior Schools Orchestra and the Yorkshire-based Austonley Brass quintet. The Master of Ceremonies will be Gerry Kersey of BBC Radio Sheffield. Tickets are £12 for adults and £5 for under 18s. They are available to buy from Flask End in Low Bradfield, Old Horns Inn in High Bradfield, Worrall Post Office on Haggstones Road or by calling Keith Hoyland on 0114 327 8393 or Elizabeth Hampshire on 0114 229 9403. Ashdell School has proved for the second year in a row that its students really do have talent as two Y6 girls have been awarded scholarships to their senior schools. Molly McEwen has been awarded a performing arts scholarship and Grace Conroy was awarded a sports scholarship. “We are absolutely delighted and very proud of our girls,” said head teacher Anne Camm. “They all work exceptionally hard in their final year here and the results of that hard work have most definitely paid off. This is the first time such scholarships have been awarded, so we are thrilled that our varied and busy school curriculum has helped the girls achieve these honours.”

This picture of six-year-old Mollie patiently waiting for a turn while Eric Green rides on the rocking horse in his wellies during a wet playtime at Burncross School features in Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green Through Time by Mel and Joan Jones (£12.99, Amberley Publishing). “I still remember that jumper,” said Mollie. “It was brown with a little motif on the pocket that was orange. My mum saved the picture all these years – I think it’s the only one that exists of that rocking horse!” If you have any memories of the rocking horse – or you have a picture of it that you’d like to share – we’d love to hear from you. Call Stephanie Burns on 0114 250 6300 or email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will print your comments in the next issue. January photograph – Ecclesfield Cinema Mollie Bintcliffe Mollie recalls her mother-in-law Lilian Smith, who lived at 279 The Wheel in Ecclesfield when she was a child, saying how much she had enjoyed working at the cinema alongside her sister Hilda. Lilian held down two jobs at the time; during the day she served petrol at Ecclesfield Motor Company and at night she was an usher at the picture house. “There were no buses in those days so she would walk there and back every day,” said Mollie. Graham Hartley Just after the picture house opened, a gas engine was installed in case the electricity supply failed. At Kays Engineering Works across the road from the cinema there was a young apprentice called Walter Hardy, about 16 years old at the time, who was famed for

being able to take things apart and put them back together again. As a result, he was often called on to repair things. Now and again, he was called over to the cinema to get the gas engine going as he was the only one who could do it. “His wages must have been free tickets to see the shows,” laughed Graham, who was friends with Walter throughout his life. Walter is sadly no longer alive but he lived and worked in Ecclesfield all his life.

Why we have to teach children not to fear failure. Words: David Kaye e live in a world where every attempt is made to ensure we are as safe as possible. ‘Elf and Safety is often said with derision or as a joke (or both). Some years ago a professor of paediatric exercise told me something so startling that I can picture exactly where I was when I heard it (Sheffield Institute of Sport, to be precise). He said: “Parents are so afraid of the risk of their children playing out that the subsequent lack of exercise will result in a significant increase in morbidity in their forties.” In other words, trying to keep children safe now will result in more of them dying young! There are a number of other negative spin-offs in a culture where we try to eliminate risk. People don’t learn how to assess danger for themselves and begin to find fear where it is unnecessary. We go to increasing lengths to avoid failure, and accountability can be misplaced. Think how many times we hear people keen to blame someone (or God) for anything that goes wrong. We appear to have misplaced our own responsibility, and with it our power, resulting in a victim mentality. There is a cartoon of a parents’ evening at which a child is underachieving. Both captions are the same – ‘What are you going to do about it?’ The images are the same except that in the 1960s picture the child is shame-faced and in 2010 it is the teacher who looks worried. The child, on the other hand, is grinning.

Children need to be able to assess danger for themselves

Who should sort it out? I have seen children with significant learning difficulties who have knuckled down and, after much effort, succeeded. Teachers and parents should guide, but it is the pupil who has to strive. What, then, if your child is too afraid of failure? Like ostriches, there is a risk we’ll bury our heads in the sand and think: “I can’t do it and if I don’t bother ‘it’ will go away”. Except it will still be there and will get harder and harder. Don’t delay. If your child is struggling, seek the help of teachers or the Kip McGrath Centre. Tell your children: Dare to fail, and keep trying. Success will follow. David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath Education Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and is a former headteacher with 25 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire.
