HOME & GARDEN

Feng shui your home APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF HAPPINESS AND HARMONY INTO YOUR DÉCOR. omes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to and if you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there’s no better place to start than with the theory of feng shui. Its principles maintain that we live in harmony with our environment and its main aim is to achieve balance in your living and working space and maximise your potential for success in all areas of your life. So, how can we apply this philosophy to our home for 2020 and beyond? We’ve compiled a few ideas that will kickstart your journey to a happier and healthier home.

H

Invite wealth into your home In feng shui, your front door represents how energy enters your home and your life. So, naturally it is first place to start when you want to create good feng shui. To draw chi energy to your front door place plants and lights either side and use a mirror to visually enlarge the foyer space but position it so that it doesn’t directly face the door. Evergreens are ideal foliage and shrubs which stay green and have a good bulk all year round are key, so try box or yew, hebes or sarcococcas. Pictured: Garden Trading 40cm planter gardentrading.co.uk

Bring harmony to your kitchen The hall represents opportunities, therefore ensure it is kept clutter-free so that the ‘energy’ can circulate. Place coats and shoes inside a closed cupboard so they don’t stagnate and to activate that all important chi energy, position a mirror and fresh flowers to instantly uplift the vitality of the space.

The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and cooker opposite each other, as that can lead to arguments between couples by creating a ‘water and fire crash’. Avoid too much black and red, as that too causes water and fire to collide. Focus on strong Earth element décor such as fresh whites, clean greys and warm nude tones.

HOME & GARDEN

Spruce up your interior decor

Nourish your dining space

In feng shui, plants embody life energy. What does that mean? Well, living green house plants connect us to nature and bring vibrancy into our homes. They’re like fresh pressed organic green juice for our homes. Think freshness, health and vitality. The most important thing to remember is to find plants that you can care for and are appropriate for the space. For example, take your lighting conditions into consideration. If you’re new to plants, try some easy ones like aloe and succulents.

The dining room and table are an important consideration in feng shui as they provide a space where you can concentrate mindfully on what you are eating. In feng shui the dining space is considered to relate with the spleen, that in turn relates to the element Earth, which in traditional Chinese medicine is concerned with digestion. To optimise the energy in this space, place a mirror on the wall to reflect the dining area and fresh flowers on the table.

Pictured: Botanical Bathroom featuring assorted indoor plants from Dobbies dobbies.com

Pictured: TRELLIS and MIMA Shelving by John Eadon johneadon.co.uk

Encourage a restful sleep

Let chi flow freely

To ensure your bedroom is as balanced as possible, choose a light neutral colour and invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress. The bed must have a headboard and be positioned centrally against a solid wall and ideally must not be in line with the bedroom door. Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide support and top with curvy lamps and lightly fragranced candles to introduce some romantic energy.

The front garden represents your future, so ensure it is always kept beautiful with an array of flowers and plants and always keep it tidy so that the chi-energy is able to flow freely. The back garden represents both health and wealth for the occupants, so ensure it is always kept in good condition. The boundaries, fences and walls must always be well maintained to provide support to the occupants and a bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space.

Local and proud NEALE JACKSON IS ALL ABOUT THE PERSONAL TOUCH – AND HIS VALUE FOR MONEY SERVICES WON’T LEAVE YOU OUT IN THE COLD. t’s just a white box with a few pipes connected to it, usually tucked away in a cupboard and easily forgotten. But a broken boiler is big trouble at any time of year, particularly now when we are still feeling the icy blasts of winter. Aside from the inconvenience there’s the cost factor; a neglected boiler is more likely to be broken beyond repair... and that means shelling out around £2.5k for a replacement. Swift Gas owner Neale Jackson has been in the plumbing, heating and gas industry for nearly 30 years. He made Sheffield his home seven years ago and has built up a successful business by offering local people a quality, honest service based on his years of experience. “I believe in having a good relationship with my customer where a bond of trust is built, and a lot of my good friends today started out as customers,” he says. The vast majority of Neale’s clients are in the north and west of Sheffield, in areas like Stocksbridge, Stannington, Deepcar, Penistone, Dore and Totley... and all points in between. “You’re more efficient when all your jobs are close together so I’d rather condense my work into one area,” he says. “I’ll never book more than four jobs into any single day and I always leave gaps in between, because that gives me the leeway to tackle any problems that occur and also to react immediately to an emergency call-out.” While Neale is a sole trader he has a working relationship with another company based in Chapeltown. “So if a job needs

I

all hands on deck there are four lads I can bring on board for things like boiler installations.” Neale’s a familiar figure in the area. When he’s not out and about repairing, servicing and installing boilers he’s out on his bike. Neale has been a keen mountain biker since moving to Sheffield, entering the local Steve Peat race at Grenoside and enduro races in Scotland and Wales. This year he’s joined the local Sheff Rec CC where he’s going to have a go at time trial and hill climb events. You’ll also see him regularly at other local independent businesses such as Langsett Cycles on Penistone Road with Danny, Kippy and Steve or Rivelin Park and Café, often in the company of his four-year-old daughter Eva. He says: “My ethos is to shop local. We’ve got some great businesses offering everything we could need, and if we all

shop local it keeps the money in Sheffield and promotes growth.” Meanwhile Neale’s top tip to all customers is: don’t neglect that box on the wall. Whether they are in or out of warranty, boilers need an annual service and when people forget or just stop that’s where the problem lies. Neale always puts a big sticker on any boiler he services, reminding customers when the next service is due. And he’s happy to make a note in his diary and give them a reminder call if asked. Boiler servicing starts from £75 depending on make and model, Swift Gas also carry out central heating checks on the radiators, thermostats etc. which are included in the price, which makes the service package they offer the most comprehensive value for money in the local area. Neale says: “I believe in giving value for money. As the central heating system is connected to the boiler I feel it makes sense to check this at the same time, offering expert advice on any work that may need to be carried out to the central heating system.” Swift Gas Tel: 07733 605734 www.rmcmedia.co.uk 23

Slimming World Consultant Lauren Doyle, Lori Kitchin, Jo Groves, Julie Cade, Julie Smith meet Chatty Man Alan Carr

Slimmers celebrate with Chatty Man A group of Slimming World consultants from Sheffield celebrated their groups’ successes by meeting chat show host and comedian, Alan Carr. Alan co-hosted the annual Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Margaret opened her first group in 1969 and over the last 50 years Slimming World has supported almost one million slimmers. The team, who run Slimming World groups in Sheffield, were delighted to get a chance to meet Alan. Lauren Doyle said it was the perfect end to a fantastic year for the Sheffield Slimming World groups. “The members at our group make me burst with pride, not only have they seen big changes on the scales, many have improved their health and completely changed their lives too. “Watching people grow in confidence each week and take on things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight absolutely amazes me. I feel proud of the small part I play in supporting people to achieve their dreams and to celebrate alongside them when they do, so we were honoured to represent the Sheffield groups at the Slimming World Awards.” Alan, who presented comedy chat show Chatty Man on Channel 4, said: “I met so many people who had transformed their lives and it was clear how much the support they received from their ‘Slimming World family’ meant to them. Every one of them spoke passionately about how they couldn’t have made those changes to eat more healthily and become more active without the support of their Consultants and group every week.” To find out how you could get that Slimming World feeling call 0344 897 8000 or visitwww.slimmingworld.co.uk to find your nearest group.

BITS & PIECES

Musical Director wanted

Heritage skills weekend Members of the public are being offered the rare chance to try their hand at some of the region’s oldest and rarest traditional crafts next month. Everyone from a stained glass expert to a stone mason are being lined up to demonstrate their art at the free, two-day ‘Heritage Skills’ event which is held at Sheffield’s Woodland Gallery in Stannington. The event, which takes place on the weekend of 28 and 29 March, is hoping to encourage more people to take up traditional crafts and learn new skills as a result. The free event takes place from 10am until 3pm each day. There is also free car parking. The Woodland Gallery is based at Storrs Wood, Storrs Lane, Stannington, Sheffield S6 6GY.

Invitation to Murder! Ecclesfield Priory Players are presenting School For Murder by Bettine Manktelow at the EPPiC Theatre, Well Lane, off High Street, Ecclesfield from 12-16 May. Curtain up is 7.30pm. Tickets £9 (concessions £8 Tuesday and Wednesday only) are available from 18 April. Tel: 0114 240 2624, visit www.ecclesfieldprioryplayers.co.uk or call in to the weekly Saturday coffee morning in the theatre lounge after 11am.

City of Sheffield Teachers’ Choir singing carols in the Winter Garden

The search is on for a new musical director for one of the region’s oldest choirs, City of Sheffield Teachers’ Choir. The choir was established in 1968 and is now a group of around 50 mixed voices, from all walks of life, who enjoy singing. They sing a wide range of music, rehearse on Thursday evenings 7-9 pm at St Mary’s Church Centre, Bramall Lane and usually perform three concerts a year together with ad-hoc sings at Christmas. New members are welcome. Regretfully their Spring Concert on Friday 27 March at 7.30pm at St John the Baptist Church, Owlerton will be the last occasion the choir will be led by Ralph Green, who is stepping down after a long association with the choir. He joined in 1974 and became its conductor in 1986. So the opportunity is there for a new musical director. The position will suit someone who can take over the reins and continue to uphold the high standards of singing achieved in the past as well as bringing new ideas and enthusiasm to enhance the choir’s future. If you are interested and want further information please email sheffield.teachers.choir@gmail.com by 30 April.

Spiritualist Church Sheffield South Road Spiritualist Church in Walkley is SNU (Spiritualists’ National Union) affiliated and all are welcome – you don’t need to be a member of the church to attend services. The church is run by a committee of dedicated spiritualists who are all volunteers working to bring the truth of spirit to the people of Sheffield and surrounding areas. Regular services are held on Mondays and Thursdays, a friendly welcome is guaranteed. See the website for more details – www.srssc.org.net – or call 07738 265366.

Welcome to my office Views from the roofs of S6 Simon Slater of Slaters Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess where exactly he was when he took this photograph? To find out see next month’s Sixer or follow @SlatersAerials on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of each month. Meanwhile well done to everyone who guessed that last month’s photo was taken from the roof of Granville’s shop in Marlcliffe Road, Hillsborough.

The Sheffield Sixer U8s in the kit (below) and winter jackets (right)

All kitted out HARDCORES BUILDING & PAVING SUPPLIES WERE EAGER TO HELP OUT WITH SPONSORSHIP WHEN A LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM CAME CALLING. hey won’t necessarily win every game but Sheffield Sixers Juniors under-eights football team is definitely one of the best turnedout teams around, thanks to the generosity of their sponsors Hardcores Building and Paving Supplies. It’s always a struggle for local, amateur sports team to make sure their players are properly kitted out and for Scott James, manager of the Sixers, it’s one less thing to worry about and a real boost for everyone connected with the club. Scott contacted Hardcores owner Robert Pickard more in hope than expectation last year, and was thrilled by the instant, positive response. “Robert asked me to come and see him and agreed straight away that Hardcores would sponsor us and look after us,” said Scott. “It’s very good of him because lots of people turn their noses up and aren’t interested in little teams like ours. “But it means an awful lot to everyone playing sport at grassroots level, and the boys are really thrilled with their new kit. Our old kit came from a previous team who outgrew it so to have smart new strips in the correct sizes is great for the boys.”

T

32 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Hardcores have contributed full playing strips for the whole team, with the Hardcores logo on the front of the football shirts and the back of the winter coats... and those coats come in extremely useful, especially at this time of year when the rain is lashing down on Middlewood Park where Sheffield Sixers play in the Sheffield & Hallamshire League. The under-eights play five-a-side on small pitches and the team is made up of local lads from the Loxley, Walkley, Fox Hill and Parson Cross areas, and they play all over Sheffield, plus Barnsley, Chesterfield, Worksop and beyond. For Scott the matches are the fun part. Organising training, selecting teams, sorting through the steady stream of emails from parents about availability and organising transport to away fixtures is where it gets complicated. But it’s a labour of love for this local dad who has two children who play. “I really enjoyed my football growing up and went on to play Sunday League when I left school, and I want these lads to get the same enjoyment out of football that I do. “It’s also good to know as a parent that these children aren’t roaming the streets or getting into mischief.”

Hardcores was formed in December 2003 by Robert Pickard (above) who has spent 45 years in the builders merchant business based in Sheffield. Hardcores provides a special service to small and medium-size contractors and also active DIY enthusiasts. Robert’s extensive experience gives him the knowledge of exactly what customers want and has helped him build up longlasting business relationships. All Hardcores staff are well trained to customers’ needs and most have worked in the industry for over 25 years. EASTER

Eggs-pand your mind FROM LEGENDARY QUESTS TO STORIES OF CHOCOLATE, THERE’S LOTS TO DO IN YORKSHIRE THIS EASTER, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. affodils, bright copper-foiled chocolate and woollen mittens being ceremoniously shoved back in the drawer – these are a few of the many reasons to look forward to the Easter holidays. It is the time of year that we finally emerge from the hibernation of winter and start to think about getting active outside. It’s also the first school holiday of the year when the days are a little longer. On Easter Sunday in Sheffield, for instance, sunrise is set for 6.44am and sunset at 7.26pm, giving way to almost 13 hours of light to spend outdoors. That’s 13 hours to dash down heather-strewn hills, cycle along fresh-leafed trails, whizz down zip lines or – should the weather still be dubious – enjoy some of the region’s indoor attractions that are pulling off their dust sheets and opening their doors. Feeling underprepared? We’ve got you covered with our guide to Easter activities across Yorkshire, including legendary quests, egg-stravagant culinary tours and fantasy-filled days out to keep everyone entertained.

D

Step in to the world where dreams come true Enjoy a fantasy-filled day out at Yorkshire Wildlife Park this Easter holiday with family entertainment, colourful characters, live shows and more from 4-6 April. Meet Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and their arch-rival Captain Hook and come faceto-face with the world’s most amazing and beautiful animals. For over 80 years, the story of Peter Pan and his battle against Captain Hook has enchanted children and adults alike and continues to benefit the seriously ill children at Great Ormond Street due to the legacy the author left the hospital. Yorkshire Wildlife Park are also proud to support Great Ormond Street Hospital during this event and will be donating £1 from every admission ticket purchased. Brodsworth Gardens

Head out on a quest for dragons Head out on a legendary quest this Easter holiday at Brodsworth Hall and Gardens. Crack the clues as you and your family follow the trail through the mystical grounds. Intrepid adventurers who track down the mysterious dragons eggs will be bestowed with a certificate and delicious treats from Hotel Chocolat. On top of normal admission prices, the Easter Adventure Quest costs just £1 per child and there’s no need to book.

Hop along to Theo’s crackin’ Egg Run Join The Children’s Hospital Charity on Easter Sunday for the official Sheffield Easter Egg Run 2020. Charity patron and two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland will be leading the way, before taking photos with riders at the Weston Park finish. Previously organised by Three Shires Honda Owners Club and more recently taken over by Michael Peat, the Egg Run events have raised thousands of pounds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, helping to buy lifesaving equipment, fund vital research and create a comfortable, engaging environment for patients. Find out more tchc.org.uk

Unleash your inner eggs-plorer With the Easter holidays spread out across April, you’ll find things to do with the kids most days at Hardwick Hall. There will be craft activities, opportunities to get closer to nature in both the park and garden, and, of course, a fantastic space to take in a big breath of fresh air. If you’re looking to get outdoors and keep the family busy, follow the trail across the park and gardens, which points out all the spring highlights including the flourishing borders and ever-popular fairy houses. See if you spot Hardwick’s lambs along the way and finish your walk with a trip to the Great Barn restaurant and treat yourself whilst supporting Hardwick’s vital conservation work. It’s not just signs of spring you need to keep your eyes out for. Over the Easter weekend, youngsters can join in the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt along Lady Spencer’s Walk, in the garden or around the park and spot clues to win a delicious Cadbury Easter treat. It costs £3 per person to take part. Simply head to the Stableyard from 10-13 April. Find out more nationaltrust.org.uk/hardwick-hall

Take an eggs-travagant culinary tour Who doesn’t love an Easter egg hunt? Make the most of having a Friday off work by joining the Easter-themed food tour, featuring an Easter egg hunt and some special surprises. The tour will follow the same route as the Local Leeds food tour, which means you’ll visit six independent venues, with food included at every stop and three alcoholic or soft drinks thrown in. You’ll learn about the venues, the dishes and the history of food and drink in Leeds and Yorkshire and to celebrate the Easter weekend, there will be a few extra treats thrown in, including hidden chocolate eggs throughout the tour. There’s even an exclusive golden egg with a special prize hidden inside. The tour takes place on Good Friday (10 April) and there are only eight spaces, so if you want to book on, you’ll need to hurry. Find out more leedsfoodtours.com

Join all your favourite characters on a magical Easter egg experience Follow the story of Peter Rabbit through the Kirkstall Abbey ruins. Along the way join in with storytelling, dancing and games led by your favourite characters from this iconic children’s story. Meet some cheeky rabbits, join a bunny on an adventure and discover what naughty squirrels get up to – no wonder the duck is in such a fluster. Find out more sneakyexperience.co.uk

Discover York’s chocolate story The Easter Bunny and friends are visiting York from 3-13 April for an eggciting Easter egg hunt experience. Children can join in with games and meet colourful costumed characters as they work to find the missing chocolate eggs. Start outside King’s Square, before being led to the beautiful surroundings of the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall – the perfect way for families to get into the Easter spirit. Be aware: the Easter Bunny loves fresh air, so it’s best to come prepared for Yorkshire weather.

Auxerre leads the way in the 2019 Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster Pictures by Andrew Kelly Photography

The flat is back! OFFICIALLY OPENING THE UK FLAT TURF SEASON, THE UNIBET LINCOLN RACEDAY SHOWCASES WORLD-CLASS RACING AT THE HEART OF DONCASTER ON TOWN MOOR. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE RACE CARD IS THE UNIBET LINCOLN, A HERITAGE HANDICAP WORTH £100,000 IN PRIZE MONEY.

Why is the Raceday called the Lincoln? The UNIBET Lincoln has run at Doncaster since 1965 when it was transferred from the former Lincoln Racecourse. The race itself has run since 1849 and is a race rich in history. The Lincoln Handicap is in fact one half of the Spring Double with The Grand National held two weeks later. However, winning the double is no easy feat. In fact the only jockey to have ever won both legs was Dave Dick way back in 1956! 40 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Back to 2020, and will jockey James Doyle score a hat-trick, having won the race on the last two outings, first in 2018 on Adeybb and again in 2019 on Auxerre – he’s surely one to watch. And after a cold bleak winter with unfortunate abandonments the racecourse team is excited to welcome the flat back in style. Entertainment for the UNIBET Lincoln includes music from Brass Band ‘Flat Cap Brass’ and a live performance from Chasing Mumford, the official Mumford & Sons tribute.’ Grandstand Tickets are just £20 and flat caps are a must-wear item.

Of course, racing is free for U18s and the launch of Magical World of Racing on 29 March has all the markings of a fantastic family day out. On arrival visit Professor Dumblecaster (see what we did there) and his magical cap, children can then make their own wand and learn a spell or two, before Professor Pout inducts them into the Magical World of Racing. Take a turn on a FREE Unicorn Ride (even the ponies are joining in), but beware of the smoke breathing dragon, with his impressive 18ft wings who will be making appearances throughout the

day, as he hunts down his baby... yes that’s right two dragons! To top the day off, there’s all the fun of the fair, and an owl display by Wild Owls, and yes you heard it right, Doncaster’s first Shetland Unicorn Race! A family ticket to the Magical World of Racing is just £20. All wizards welcome! The annual Cheltenham Preview evening is also back on 4 March. Racing pundits and a National Hunt Trainer and jockey will be among the leading line-up that will be sharing tips ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. Priced at just £16 and including a pie and pea supper, prebooking is essential for this event. Sticking with Cheltenham and the racecourse have added an extra fixture to this year’s card – none other than the Cheltenham Chaser Raceday. A perfect opportunity to enjoy the action from Cheltenham but from the comfort of Doncaster. The Cheltenham Festival will

be shown on screens, in addition to seven exciting National Hunt Races at Doncaster. Finally; the recent announcements of Shed Seven and Supergrass gives plenty to look forward to as we look ahead to a summer of fantastic music, exciting racing and of course those all-important family days out at Doncaster Racecourse.

EATING OUT

Hooked by Crookes JAFLONG STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD FOR GOOD REASON, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. he pink neon of Crookes’ Jalfong Indian restaurant is hard to miss as you’re driving through the smart Sheffield suburb. But if you’ve not yet been tempted in by the enticing glow, it’s time you did. Inside you’ll find a traditional-looking restaurant; there’s a bar and waiting area on your right as you walk in then a long dining room to your left filled with white tableclothed tables, dark brown leather chairs, and classical Indian paintings and wallpaper. There’s a window into the kitchen at the far end of the space and a number of chefs were busying themselves with pots of spices, hot pans and sizzling platters. Smart-looking staff are warm and welcoming and, with the addition of a large 18th birthday party, there was a real buzz about the place. The Crookes restaurant has been a mainstay for 22 years and it’s easy to see why. Popadoms (is there a better way to start a meal?) as big as a dinner plate should have given us an indication about portion sizes at Jaflong – just a word of warning, they’re not for the fainthearted.

T

The crispy appetisers (50p) and accompanying chutney tray (£3) were welcomed and quickly devoured, along with cool draught Cobra beers (£4.50 pint/£2.95 half), as we looked over the extensive menu, which has been expertly put together by owner Shahab Uddin. With chef ’s specials, Jaflong specials, curries, tandoori dishes, vegetable dishes and more, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. I started with what I thought would be a light introduction to the evening but my creamy and coconutty prawn puree (£3.50) could have probably fed both of us, although my wife was too distracted by her delicious Tandoori King Prawns, which had been marinated in yoghurt and cooked over charcoal (£4.90). The blackened prawns, with the distinctive red tikka colouring, were a real highlight. I got my own taste of the tandoori prawns in my mixed grill (£19.95), which arrived on a sizzling platter along with chunks of lamb and chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and a sheek kebab. It was served with boiled rice (or nan bread, if you prefer) and a very good bhuna sauce. It was hard to know where

to start but every element was cooked well, tender where it should be, and had real zing from the seasoning. Lamb karai (£9.95) is my wife’s go-to curry, if you will, and this Jaflong version was particularly good. The lamb was fallapart-tender and the sauce, made with a combination of fresh herbs, spices, onion, capsicums, garlic and fresh coriander, was lovingly moreish and eagerly mopped up with the accompanying nan bread (£2.95). A portion of pilau rice (£3.25) completed proceedings. This was our first visit to the restaurant and won’t be our last. It’s not just the pink neon that makes it stand out from the crowd. THEATRE

The stage is set LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY, I SHALL SAY THIS ONLY ONCE... RACHEL MARTIN SPOKE TO WRITER AND PRODUCER STEVE ATKINSON AHEAD OF STANNINGTON PLAYERS’ UPCOMING PRODUCTION, ‘ALLO ‘ALLO. tannington Players has existed in the heart of the community since 1951. From its roots as a church performance group at Knowle Top in the early 1950s to setting up residency at Lomas Hall when it opened in 1955, this is a group that has consistently brought the community together to produce fantastic shows. Taking a short break from rehearsals for the upcoming interpretation of David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd’s ‘Allo ‘Allo, writer and producer Steve Atkinson found time to speak to Sixer about what to expect in the coming year, the importance of community theatre and why he is looking forward to April’s performance.

S

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do.

My name is Steve Atkinson. I’m now retired having worked in the IT industry for a very long time. I currently write and produce the annual pantomime in Grenoside and appear on stage at Lomas Hall with the Stannington Players. What is your background in theatre?

Although I’d never been on stage, I discovered a love of pantomime about 12 years ago, with a little help from the group based at Grenoside Community Centre. I seemed to have a lot of odd skills which fitted what they needed and after playing parts for a few years, I took over writing and producing the show. Five years ago, several of us joined the group in Stannington who were looking for new players. We were given parts in a ‘proper’ play and we’re still here. What are you working on at the moment? 46 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Grenoside’s Treasure Island panto finished recently, so I’m looking forward to Stannington’s April production. They were short of a producer so myself and my friend Rita Proctor volunteered to put on ‘Allo ‘Allo! It’s been a little dream of mine for some time to do it, but we could never get enough people interested until now.

‘Allo ‘Allo! is a beloved British TV sitcom, what is your approach to this play?

We’re very aware that it ran for eight years on TV and that it is still regularly shown, so people are still very familiar with what the characters look like and what they sound like. We’re staying as close to the original as we can and though we can’t hope to recreate those wonderful iconic actors, we will do our best. How are rehearsals going?

Better than I could have hoped. Usually, as a play is being rehearsed, the characters grow and ‘fill out’ gradually as the actors become more comfortable with the lines and the action. With this production, the cast seemed to turn up with their accents and personalities already in place. ‘Allo ‘Allo! needs a big cast – more than most plays, so as well as the Stannington Players themselves, we’ve invited friends from Grenoside and from Trinity Players in

existence for 69 years, we must be doing something right.

Barnsley. Everybody has gelled really well and there’s a lot of fun and laughter on stage. I must specially mention Mark Winton, who plays Rene – he is just excellent.

What do amateur dramatic societies like Stannington Players bring to the local community?

What do you think people will enjoy most about this production?

First of all, it’s laugh-out-loud funny. Coming from Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft who wrote the TV series, that’s no surprise. All the familiar characters are there: Rene and Edith, Herr Flick and Helga, waitresses Yvette and Mimi, Michelle of the Resistance (listen very carefully, I shall say this only once) and lots more. Oh, dare I mention that’s it’s ever so slightly rude? Can you describe the production in three words?

Familiar. Affectionate. Very funny. Sorry, that’s four words. What are you looking forward to most during the new season at Stannington Players?

Since we started rehearsals for ‘Allo ‘Allo! five new people have contacted us and joined. Amateur dramatic groups are always on the lookout for new people, so this is really good news. We’re getting them all involved in the show, either onstage or off-stage and I really hope that they like what we do and want to stay. Our next play is mid-August and extra people might mean we can be more ambitious in our choice.

Steve Atkinson

How has theatre changed over the years – is it difficult to keep it going as cinemas and television have developed?

It’s certainly true that audience numbers have gradually reduced over the years. Looking back at the archives, I’d say we are about 25 per cent lower than two decades ago. But the figure seems to have stabilised in recent years and it’s at a level where we can afford to keep going. Professional theatre generally seems very popular these days, which is perhaps helping the amateur societies and when you consider that the Stannington Players have been in

Although Stannington has grown considerably, it still has a strong village feel about it. Certainly, the people here are fiercely proud of their identity and I only hope that we can, in our small way help toward that feeling. Watching the audience before the show and during the interval – where there’s a clamour of conversation and laughter as friends meet and old acquaintances are renewed – makes me wonder if we have done just that. I’m rather proud of what we do. Finally, where can our readers find out more about the upcoming production of ‘Allo ‘Allo and purchase tickets?

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once! Stannington Players present ‘Allo ‘Allo involving all the well-known characters in a plot concerning fake Hitlers and a hidden painting at Lomas Hall in Stannington from 2-3 April at 7.15pm and on 4 April at 2.15pm and 7.15pm. Tickets cost £7.50 (£6.50 concessions) and can be purchased by calling our booking sectary on 07547 224057 or visit stanningtonplayers.org.uk for more information.

Who is Stannington Players for? What sort of shows do you put on?

It’s always a balance. You need to choose plays which will attract your audiences – ideally ones that are well-known and be financially viable. But the play has to also be exciting and challenging for your actors, otherwise they’ll lose interest and move away. We lean towards comedies as the best compromise, often with a dramatic edge to them or out-and-out farces like the recent Murdered to Death, a deliberately daft Agatha Christie spoof. The roles in the play have to ‘match’ to some degree with the actors that you have and it has to be physically do-able, in terms of set-building and lighting etc. We’re hoping that ‘Allo ‘Allo! checks all those boxes. As you might expect, there are very few plays that do. As well as our April and August plays, there’s the Christmas pantomime, which always goes down well with our audience and is great fun to play. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 47

EATING OUT

A night at the dogs OLIVIA WARSOP TRIES HER LUCK AT THE PANORAMA RESTAURANT, OWERLTON? WAS SHE ONTO A WINNER? urely nothing can make for a better night out than fantastic food, drinks and a great atmosphere. The Panorama Restaurant at Owlerton Stadium has these in abundance with live greyhound racing to boot if you fancy a flutter. As the name suggests you get a panoramic views of the track, meaning no one has to miss a single exciting moment. When we arrived we were shown to our table and left to view the drinks menu. Glasses of wine start from £3, and draught lagers and bottles start from £2.50 and £4 respectively. Spirit and mixers start from £2.50 with the option to double up for £1.50. We wasted no time in getting settled with gin and tonics and taking in the scene. The restaurant seats up to 300 people so you’re guaranteed a buzzing atmosphere. A tote runner is also included in the price of your ticket and they can be seen weaving between tables taking bets. When the lights go down for a race all eyes go to the window and the excitement is palpable, screens placed around the restaurant also show the races so you can re-watch anything you might have missed.

S

The à la carte menu caters for everyone with multiple vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. For starters we enjoyed garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce, with toasted focaccia topped with parmesan and a sprinkle of rocket, and a refreshing melon and pineapple cocktail served with a raspberry sorbet which proved to be an eclectic but inspired dish. This was followed by mains of tender roast chicken with a sweet carrot and swede purée, charred asparagus and a thyme scented jus, and loin of cod in a tasty prawn and lime velouté served on a bed of crushed new potatoes. All mains come accompanied with a platter of seasoned roasted potatoes, cabbage and bacon, steamed broccoli and a buttery cauliflower cheese. Portion sizes are extremely generous so make sure you take a healthy appetite with you, although once you book a table it’s yours for the entire night so there’s ample time to savour the food without worrying you’ll miss a race, you can even wait longer in between courses if you let the staff know. After a small gap we ordered dessert, a steamed double chocolate pudding in a rich fudge sauce and a lightly spiced

apple bakewell tart served with a scoop of clotted cream ice cream finished off the meal beautifully. If you still have room after this they also offer a range of coffees and liqueurs. Tickets prices run from £13 per person on a Tuesday, £19 on a Friday and £25 on a Saturday. Included in the price is a three-course à la carte meal, admission, a race card and waiting service. By this point it had become apparent that while we had certainly won with the food, the same unfortunately could not be said about our betting endeavours, but that’s part of the fun of the night and I’m sure we’ll be back to try our luck next time. Hard decision IN THE SECOND OF OUR GUIDES TO ALTERNATIVE JEWELLERY METALS WE LOOK AT… TUNGSTEN CARBIDE. his is an exceptionally hard material and more scratchresistant than titanium, steel or any of the precious metals. Tungsten carbide is an alloy of mostly tungsten and carbon. This normally exists as a powder of fine particles in a matrix of another material such as cobalt, that allows the super-hard alloy to be moulded into the required shape: the melting point of tungsten carbide is extreme (3422˚C) so partially melting the matrix in order to mould the material is the only practical way to work it! High pressures and temperatures are required to mould it into shape and the resulting material is so hard it can only be machined or re-finished by grinding with diamond-edged tools. In addition to being extremely hard, tungsten carbide is very strong and keeps its shape very well, even after much wear. It is also dense and has a lovely weighty feel which can really be appreciated in the chunky rings we usually see in this material. Tungsten carbide has a distinctive dark grey colour which looks fantastic with either a highly reflective or brushed finish. It combines well with other materials such as carbon fibre or ceramic to create sleek industrial looks. Alongside ion plating in a variety of colours, these combinations create some of the most eye-catching contemporary designs we stock. Alternatively, wood veneers create

T

an intriguing texture contrast with the metal. We even have a design inlaid with meteorite to give a fabulous ‘space-age’ feel! There are both pros and cons to a material that is as hard as tungsten carbide. Although it offers superior scratch resistance, maintaining a beautiful finish for longer, it also means that your tungsten carbide ring is not able to be resized in the future; if your fingers alter you will need to replace the ring. Tungsten carbide also requires a specialist tool to remove it in case of emergency: it cannot be cut off but instead needs to be placed under pressure by a tool which causes the ring to fracture. It is also

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Water, water everywhere

THE GREAT SHEFFIELD FLOOD OF 1864 IS WELL DOCUMENTED, BUT DO YOU RECOGNISE THESE FAMILIAR LOCATIONS? hile we fret and worry about the wettest February in living memory and the effects of global warming, it’s worth remembering that local flooding is not a modern phenomenon in these parts. Here are a couple of photos from a devastating event that has become woven into the folklore of North Sheffield, the Great Sheffield Flood that devastated parts of Sheffield, on 11 March 1864, when the Dale Dyke Dam broke as its reservoir was being filled for the first time. At least 240 people died and more than 600 houses were damaged or destroyed by the flood. The dam was rebuilt in 1875. Many Sixer readers will have recognised last month’s trio of sepia-toned photographs of old public houses in the region that are still very much going strong today... the Old Horns

Inn in High Bradfield, the Nag’s Head on Stacey Bank and the old Admiral Rodney Inn on Loxley Road, which was demolished in 1957 with a new pub opening on the adjacent site.

those who need our services, as well as meeting the requirements of our care community. “Familiarity and consistency are the key to helping to maintain our guidelines and outcomes for individuals. Puppy love WHAT MAKES SOMEONE GIVE UP THEIR TIME, ENERGY – AND A NICE CLEAN HOUSE – TO BRING UP A SUPPORT DOG PUPPY? HELEN FRITH AND LAURA SMYTH LIFT THE LID ON THE JOYS AND FRUSTRATIONS OF BEING A PUPPY SOCIALISER FOR SHEFFIELD-BASED CHARITY SUPPORT DOGS – AND THE PERILS OF LEAVING YOUR SOCKS ON THE FLOOR.

Lawson came to Helen when he was three months old

or the past year Helen Frith and Laura Smyth, both from Sheffield, have willingly given up most of their spare time to giving two Support Dogs’ puppies – fox-red Labrador Lawson and black Labrador/ Retriever cross Ginny – the very best start in life. When they are 15 months old, the pups will bid farewell to their devoted carers and start their journey to becoming fullytrained, professional service dogs, transforming the lives of people with epilepsy, autism and for disability. But at the moment they’re still, well puppies. Messy, cheeky, sometimes destructive but always lovable puppies.

F

62 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

So why do it? Especially when just as they start to become well-behaved young dogs, they move on. Both Helen and Laura had similar reasons for becoming puppy socialisers. They had both recently lost their own pet dogs, and while they didn’t feel ready for the commitment of another pet, they missed having canine company in the house. “I couldn’t bear a house without a dog,” says Helen. “My husband was due to take retirement in about a year’s time, and after that we had plans to do things, so being a puppy socialiser for that time fitted in perfectly. I’d get a dog for a year and I’d also be helping someone else to

have a trained assistance dog in the longer term – everything just clicked. “We got Lawson when he was three months old. I thought he was gorgeous and it was so lovely to have a dog in the house again.” Laura’s own circumstances were also ideal for her to become a puppy socialiser. “I’d been a stay-at-home mum for a few years and my little girl Erin was just starting nursery, so life was opening up a bit, and I was itching to do something,” she says. “I found out about Support Dogs and came along to an information day, and that was that. We have a great time with Ginny and she has become part of the family.”

CHARITY

While both women absolutely adore their canine charges they admit it can be hard work. “It’s harder than I thought at first, especially with me having a toddler to look after as well,” says Laura. “We’d never had a puppy before and the first weeks were very tough – puppies can be so demanding and destructive. Socks are her thing, and we’ve lost so many…” Helen’s experience has been similar. “It’s a bit like having a toddler. You can never sit down, and you have to have eyes in the back of your head,” she says. “He’s always got something in his mouth!” But for both Helen and Laura, it soon got better and the upsides vastly outweigh the downsides. “I just love having Lawson in the house,” says Helen. ”He has such a lovely personality and is great company to have around. “I also really enjoy meeting the other puppy socialisers – I have made some lovely friends and we go for walks together, which has been an added, unexpected bonus.” Adds Laura: “I really enjoy the training side of things, and the social side of being a puppy socialiser. You can feel a bit isolated at times. And it’s nice to share the ups and downs with the others. It’s different to having a pet dog – you feel more responsible.” All Support Dogs’ puppy socialisers attend six weeks of weekly classes with their pups, then monthly workshops to learn basic obedience, and by the end of their tenure the pups should be at a level of well-trained pet. Which brings us to the potentially difficult topic of having to say goodbye

Ginny became part of Laura’s family

to the puppies after 12 months of bonding, love and cuddles. But both women are absolutely clear on the subject – it will be painful but worth it. “From day one I never thought of Lawson as my dog,” says Helen. “He is on loan. It’s like my children – I wouldn’t expect them to stay at home when they grow up. He will have had a fantastic childhood, and then he will go off and work for a living. That’s been my philosophy from the start.” Laura concurs. “Whenever you welcome an animal into your life, you know that at some point you will have to face the pain of saying goodbye. The difference is, with puppy socialising, you know when that day will be from the start. We accept that that’s how it is and just concentrate on enjoying every day that we get to spend with her. I know that Ginny will never forget us, but I also know she will move on quickly and love

being with her permanent family just as much. “We had a few negative comments from family and friends when we got Ginny along the lines of ‘how could you take the puppy away from Erin?’ But it’s been brilliant. We’ve had loads of conversations with her about disabilities and about the fact that someone is going to need Ginny, and that’s more important than us loving her and wanting her; we are doing this for someone else.” She adds: “When I look at the Support Dogs’ videos on YouTube and how the dogs are helping people, how could we possibly keep her? Also, going to the charity’s doggy graduation ceremony was great. It reminds you why you are doing it. It was a real boost.” Both feel very proud of their respective pups, and their future careers as professional service dogs. “I would be disappointed if Lawson didn’t make it as a Support Dog,” says Helen. “I’ve put so much effort in. Being a puppy socialiser is such a fabulous thing to do. I’m already extremely proud of him.” Adds Laura: “I would definitely encourage other people to become puppy socialisers. And don’t dismiss it because you think it will be hard. It’s so rewarding.” Support Dogs is a national charity based in Sheffield, which provides and trains assistance dogs for people with autism, epilepsy, and physical disability. Restricted to just 30 units worldwide, the Mulsanne will take with it the iconic 6.75-litre V8 motor which as stands is the longest serving V8 in continuous production in the world. Each 6.75 edition will come with dark tints to the Flying B bonnet mascot and the 21-inch Mulsanne Speed wheel will feature a unique bright-machined finish with gloss black pockets. Under the bonnet, each engine number plaque will be signed by Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark.

Small and sporty After a brief hiatus, the much-loved VW Up! GTI is back and is better than ever before. Still keeping with the cheekily deceiving 1.0-litre 133hp petrol engine, the GTI will accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. Not too shabby for a threecylinder motor. Standard equipment has been improved including a multifunction camera with lane assist, curtain airbags and a smartphone integration cradle. A six-speed manual is the transmission offered and 53.3 mpg is the stated combined fuel economy figure. The GTI comes with 17-inch ‘Oswald’ alloy wheels, GTI badging and the hallmark ‘Jacara’ checked cloth upholstery, as well as ambient lighting. The Up! GTI is available in both threeand five-door body styles. Three-door body style starts from £15,895 with the five-door starting at £16,295.

Back to black Based on the FR sport trim, the Seat Ateca Black Edition adds a number of features that enhance both the looks and the practicality of the car. On the outside, the Black Edition has gloss black door mirrors, window and grille surrounds, gloss black roof rails and unique 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels. Colours available include Crystal Black, Nevada White, Velvet Red and Rhodium Grey. Inside there are black leather seats with all Black Editions coming with their Winter Pack which includes heated seats, heated washers for the full LED headlights and a wash water level indicator. Engines available range from a 148hp 1.5-litre petrol to a 2.0-litre diesel offering 187hp, all-wheel drive and a DSG gearbox. Available to order now priced from £28,845.

Big in every way The Mercedes – AMG GLB 35 4MATIC is now on sale, with prices starting from £48,665 OTR. First customer deliveries are expected to arrive in Summer 2020. The car features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which has an output of 306hp and 400Nm. 0 to 62 mph takes 5.2 seconds and has a VMAX of 155mph. As standard comes a multimedia system with ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation; 10.25-inch digital cockpit display and 10.25-inch touchscreen media display; Augmented Reality navigation; DAB radio; harddisk navigation and wireless charging for your smartphone. LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, 20-inch AMG wheels finished in matt black, heated front electrically adjustable memory seats, Burmester surround sound system and ambient lighting with 64 colours also come as standard. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 67

Unclog your car ADD A HY-CARBON ENGINE CLEAN TO YOUR SERVICE AT RUTLAND AUTOS, IT COULD SAVE YOU THOUSANDS IN THE LONG RUN. Meet the team

magine if someone was to invent a magic box that saved car owners thousands of pounds by preventing the engine clogging problems that usually result in long hours of labour and a hefty garage bill. It’s not magic, it’s really happening... and the team at Rutland Auto Bodies has been amazed by what the Hy-Carbon engine cleaner can do. It’s the combustion in the engine that is responsible for the accumulation of soot deposits in cylinders, the pistons, the DPF, the ERG valve and the turbo. When the soot is not removed regularly, breakdowns occur, and the costs escalate rapidly if engine parts need replacing (for example £2,000 for a turbo). But when you plug your car into the Hy-Carbon, an injection of hydrogen into the intake of your engine means the carbon cleaning is done delicately and

I

thoroughly and your engine returns to its original performance. And because no chemicals or additives are used, there are no harmful emissions. Tony Tasker from Rutland Auto Bodies says: “We’ve had this machine since October and we’re still amazed by how good it is. We tested it first on one of our cars that was lacking response, and after using the machine I got behind the wheel and it felt awesome. It really does make that sort of difference.” Tony reckons any driver who adds the Hy-Carbon to their regular service will feel the same way. “You’ll notice immediately, your engine will be more responsive and quieter too.” Another recent success story for Rutland Autos and the Hy-Carbon was a V8 Land Rover with a sticking turbo. If that fails you have to remove the body from the chassis and the final bill will

run into thousands of pounds. But after one 90-minute treatment the problem was gone. Tony recommends all motorists should add an engine clean with the Hy-Carbon to their regular service. “It’s a preventative, you’ll feel the difference when you drive away and it’ll save you money in the long run by preventing breakdowns and keeping your car on the road,” he says. Rutland Autos was founded in 1983 and the team is there to tackle any job from clutches, brakes, tyres and exhausts to body repairs, full and part resprays and MOTs (including motorcycle MOTs).
