THE QUALITY MAGAZINE FOR SHEFFIELD AND NORTH DERBYSHIRE INTERVIEW

Westside

atricia Clifton became the event director of the Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials three years ago and has strived to make the event a fantastic family day out with top entertainment. As well as well as organising Chatsworth Horse Trials, Patricia works with FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) developing eventing in Sub-Saharan Africa and is also on the FEI eventing committee, where plans for the 2020 Olympics are well underway. We caught up with Patricia on globetrotting, sport development and what’s in store for this year’s show.

P

THE QUALITY MAGAZINE FOR SHEFFIELD & NORTH DERBYSHIRE

Well, we’ve got quite a few new additions to the programme – in fact every year we’ve brought in some new attractions and general event upgrades. That has been really exciting, we have grown hugely, but for me, the most important thing is that the team that I started with is still in place, because they do all the work.

LEADING MEN Local business success stories

ABOVE: Sarah Ennis, Pippa Funnel & Emily King

Planning for the show starts almost before the event has finished and it is a year-long process, although not full time. We consider what worked and didn’t work and what we need to change to improve it and then we think about what added value can we give our visitors. What have been the highlights?

Taking the reins ORGANISING THE DODSON & HORRELL CHATSWORTH INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS ONCE AGAIN IS PATRICIA CLIFTON. SHE TELLS FIONA BARBER WHAT TO EXPECT AT THIS YEAR’S EXTRAVAGANZA.

We have had really good weather the last two years, which makes me very nervous for this year! I think the highlight is to see really happy people; that is what it’s all about. Why should people come to Chatsworth Horse Trials?

I think we have a really good offering; apart from horses the dog agility and show, the Newfoundland Rescue Bears and the sheep show are all back by popular demand. In addition, we will have Paws For Thought and

Chatsworth Country Fair 4-6 September Souvenir edition

the dog and duck show as well as a lot of other activities for children. There are food stalls, and shops, and we’ve got the top riders in the world – we are expecting a large percentage of the top 150 riders, especially in this Olympic year, we hope they will use Chatsworth as part of their preparation for Rio – and there’s the really nice addition of more amateur riders. I think it’s going to be great. What other projects are you involved with?

I am still very involved with the FEI development programme, it has been a huge success for the FEI. My particular region, which is SubSaharan Africa, has the most incredible people who are working really hard to get the sport of eventing going in their countries. This particular project was supported by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and that actually finishes this year. But because we have made so much progress, I am really keep to find a way to keep promoting and supporting it, so we don’t get these countries going then just drop them. I am also on the FEI eventing

committee, so I am very involved in the 2020 Olympic programme, which aims to try new and innovative ways of bringing our sport to the public. We are working very closely with broadcasters and presenters to create as much excitement around eventing as possible, while keeping the integrity of our sport. What does the future hold for you at Chatsworth?

As long as they want me I will stay there, but you never know what is going to happen next. I am still travelling a lot with eventing to all parts of the globe, so there’s always an issue with finding enough time to do all of these things. But for now, I am at Chatsworth and we just hope it carries on going well. When you do decide to hand the reins over, what legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I suppose I would want to have helped improve the event and bring new things in that the public and visitors find appealing and to keep a good happy team. I always fear letting people down, so if can manage not to do that I’ll be happy.

What’s new this year?

This year we have what we call arena eventing, which is very much aimed at amateur riders who want a chance to compete at Chatsworth. It’s a short show jumping course with a 90cm class and 100cm class followed by a short cross country within an arena and it’s the first time we have run it. We thought a lot of people would love the experience of riding at Chatsworth so we hope they will like it. We have another new competition this year, the Event Rider Master Series, is being hosted by Dodson & Horrell, which we hope will attract the top riders in the world. It will run over six events throughout the UK this year and Chatsworth is the first leg. In 2017 it will extend to Europe. The winner will be the Event Rider Master Champion but they will also win significant prize money. How do you prepare for a show?

Suzuki Baleno takes the middle road

Quality never goes out of style. That’s why Westside has been the undisputed market leader for 30 years – and the lifestyle must-have for Sheffield and the Peak District’s professional and high-income readership. Targetted straight through the letterboxes of homes in the city’s most desirable postcodes, Westside takes your advertising message straight to where it really counts. Its role as a guide to all that’s good in Sheffield, especially restaurants, is reflected by the staging of the prestigious annual Westside Restaurant of The Year Awards.

New 2008 aims to heighten your senses Peugeot is its all-new 3008, the French firm’s most advanced compact SUV to date. As with all new models these days, the latest 3008 is larger, safer, more luxurious, more economical and lighter than the previous model – about 100kg lighter in fact. Inside there’s a host of advanced technology to keep you entertained: there’s a 3D satellite navigation system with TomTom® Traffic which takes into account the contours of the earth, a Mirror Screen function for your Smartphone and a feature called i-Cockpit® which supposedly heightens your senses for a better driving experience. There’ll be two petrol engines and four diesels available for the 3008. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but order books open from November.

Suzuki has created an all-new hatchback. It’s called the Baleno and it’s built for people who want a car larger than a Suzuki Swift but don’t want the added bulkiness of the S-Cross or Vitara. Priced from £12,999, the Baleno will come with a 109hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol or a four-cylinder 1.2litre petrol unit with a mild hybrid set-up. Standard equipment is very generous and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, air conditioning, satellite navigation, DAB Radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass, cruise control with speed limiter and front electric windows. Optional equipment includes automatic climate control, rear electric windows, a 4.2inch central colour trip display, LED rear lights, Adaptive Cruise Control and Radar Brake Support.

Mazda’s MX-5 takes a drop of the hard stuff Introducing the new Mazda MX-5 RF. The RF stands for Retractable Roof. In essence, the RF is just the hard-top edition of the regular MX-5. Unlike the ordinary MX-5, which is a traditional convertible, the RF is what we call a Spyder – the opening of the roof is a little smaller than on your traditional convertible. Mazda’s reasoning for this is they ‘wanted to try something new’. It’s slightly taller than the ordinary MX-5 – only by 5mm – this means it won’t be as great in the handling department, and because it’s a hard top, it’ll be heavier too. Thanks to this roof though, it’ll be quieter and more refined. Prices have yet to be announced. On sale in 2017.

y first Sukhothai experience was a decidedly intimate affair. As those who visited the earliest venture in the Leeds suburb of Chapel Allerton will recall, stepping into head chef and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot’s tiny restaurant was a bit like stepping into a neighbour’s home... if that neighbour happened to wear Thai national dress and offer knockout food from their homeland. It was cosy, friendly and – best of all – while the menu may not have been massive, the food was immaculate and bursting with authentic Thai flavours. That was back in 2002 and we have moved on considerably since those early days. The original restaurant has expanded to more than twice its original size and there are three more sizeable venues all bearing the Sukhothai name – Headingley, Leeds city centre and Harrogate – all offering a large and varied menu. We all know that bigger does not necessarily mean better, but my recent visit to the Harrogate restaurant proved that the charms that won me over in the early years – a friendly greeting, immaculate décor and delicious Thai food – had not been lost. The Sukhothai experience is bigger, but it is still like being greeted by a long-lost friend.

M

And so, after cheery smiles and the prompt arrival of drinks, we set about the formidable task of selecting from a mouth-watering selection of curries, stir-fries and specials. Seafood lovers may find the simplest option is to start with one of the mixed platters; the fishy version (£9,95 per person) contains a generous selection of satay fish, prawn skewers, squid in batter and mussels. With spicy and satay dipping sauces on the side, this was a suitably impressive and wideranging introduction to Thai cuisine. For mains, most Thai restaurants have their own version of Weeping Tiger (£15.95), a sirloin steak that is marinated, grilled and served on a sizzling hot platter in special sauce. The Sukhothai version was succulent with just the right amount of chew – savoury, slightly spicy and delicious. We notched up the heat level slightly with our second main course, chicken gata lon (£10.95) . This stir-fry dish with garlic, black pepper, lime leaves, oyster sauce, lemongrass, onion, fresh chilli and crispy basil was bursting with clean, fresh flavours. Side dishes are a vital component of any Thai meal and since the sauces are never too heavy or thick, sticky rice (£3.15) and soft noodles (£3.35) were a perfect accompaniment and, just to add one last hit of sharp, crunchy

goodness, a spicy salad with shredded papaya, chilli, peanuts and dried shrimp (£6.95) really hit the spot. Rounding things off nicely, two traditional Thai desserts – fresh mango with sticky sweet rice (£4.95) and banana in batter with icecream (£4.95) – sent us contentedly into the Harrogate night. The only slight annoyance was that there were so many dishes left untried, but Sukhothai is an old friend we will be calling on again soon. Looking to pastures new wenty-three-year-old Charlie Village has been an agricultural fencing contractor and log supplier since leaving school at the age of 16. After working for a local company, he set up his own business and now successfully runs Charlie Village Fencing. Oh, and did we mention that he also farms 250 sheep in his spare time? That’s right, this young entrepreneur who, although raised in the idyllic Derbyshire countryside does not hail from a farming family, took it upon himself to begin what he describes as ‘just a part-time job’ shortly after leaving school. “We used to have chickens when I was a child and I guess I’ve just moved a bit further up the livestock chain,” he says nonchalantly as we chat over his kitchen table in the rustic Barlow farmhouse that has

been his home since birth. After raising two orphan lambs for slaughter when he was 14, he quickly grew accustomed to the farming way of life. Aged 16, he invested in 30 acres of rented and owned land and 40 ewes, first lambing them the following spring. Seven years later, he has 70 acres of land and significantly more sheep. This foray into farming didn’t come as a surprise to Charlie’s mum, Claire. “My mum always thought I’d be a farmer when I was little,” says Charlie. “Growing up in the middle of the countryside, I guess I liked what I saw and wanted to get involved. I did go to agricultural college for a bit but I left because I felt I could learn more on the job – I’m still learning now and always will I think.” Although his family don’t help out too much with the farming, his dad – an engineer – relishes the opportunity to assist Charlie with the machinery that he designs and builds from scratch. I’m very impressed with a huge piece of kit that Charlie points out in the yard where some of his sheep are kept, and I wonder where this industrious spirit will lead. Charlie answers by explaining his longterm plan – to make sheep farming his fulltime job. He currently sells the majority of his lambs through Bakewell market, with some frozen packets also sold straight to the consumer, and he aims to continue pushing the entire business plan forward in the future. Though he assures me there’s no such thing as a typical day or week – a hugely appealing part of the lifestyle, I’m sure – he does have a regular morning routine of rising early to feed the ewes and their newborn lambs, which are housed inside. Usually the rest of the flock are on what’s known as ‘winter grazing’ and they helpfully nibble away at excess grass like nature’s lawnmowers. But in snowy winters such as the one we’ve just experienced, a lack of

grass has meant also having to feed the rest of them, too. I timed my visit perfectly to see the newborn lambs that have been bred especially for Easter. It’s actually against nature’s way to lamb this early and the majority of the flock will give birth in spring – but the 30 or so frolicking lambs I met seemed perfectly content, despite the icy conditions outside their cosy barn. Though not politically motivated, Charlie does like to encourage support for his fellow British farmers. “It is good to buy British meat and I guess I’d get a better price for my lambs if we only ate them seasonally but it doesn’t really affect me directly that some people don’t buy British,” he says in his typically relaxed manner. While he doesn’t get emotionally attached to his lambs, he does appreciate the beauty of bringing new life into the world and this is one of his favourite parts of the job. “If I was just business-minded about the sheep, I probably wouldn’t have them,” he admits. “But the worst part is when you get a phone call to say your sheep have escaped. It can be any time of day and you end up chasing them around the countryside. Luckily it doesn’t happen that often.” Charlie is also prepared for sleepless nights during lambing season, when he regularly stays up until the early hours of the morning to care for a ewe that’s giving birth. He’ll even visit again at 3am and then, after just a few hours sleep, be back at the barn before dawn to check on his flock. Not quite the part-time job he describes, then. “It does affect my social life a bit but I’m self employed so I can be flexible with my working hours,” he explains. Charlie will certainly have his hands full over the next few weeks as the spring brings with it a swathe of new lambs. But he’ll also have his eyes peeled for a farm of his own to rent – and, with this, his dream of becoming a full-time farmer will be one step closer to reality.

Ticket to the tropics

am in an Aston Martin DB9 GT at top speed, burning rubber, pedal to the metal. Beneath my three-piece suit, my heart is pounding. An evil henchman sits beside me, gun trained at my temple. In hot pursuit, a fleet of hired goons, tyres screeching as they race to close me down. I glance at the hidden button that triggers the rear machine guns; one touch would blow the enemy to dust. I hover my finger over it, waiting for the right moment, hovering, hovering… Alright, alright. No I don’t. No I’m not. I am in an Aston Martin DB9 GT; that much is true. But not in a heart-stopping, nerve-shredding, high-speed chase. Actually, I am somewhere off the A6110 just outside Leeds – and I am stuck behind a tractor. I am wearing my best three-piece suit, yes – but it’s high street, not Savile Row. The evil henchman at my side is in fact a very nice man from Aston Martin called Richard. (And he’s unarmed. Well, as far as I know.) And the cars behind me are not driven by hired goons;

more likely they’re retirees on their way back home from Lidl. I am here, behind the wheel of this great machine, as part of an event celebrating the latest James Bond film, SPECTRE. But as you’ve probably gathered, I’m making the most of the opportunity by indulging in a little wish-fulfilment. As a kid, 007 was my hero. While peers chased footballs round a field and idolised Ronaldo (the one with the teeth, not the one with the abs), I was dreaming of being Bond. Sean Connery’s effortless sophistication, Timothy Dalton’s anguish and grit, Roger Moore’s eyebrow acrobatics – I loved ‘em all. I think my favourite ever Christmas present was the waistcoat and bow tie set which became my unofficial spy uniform. All of which explains why now, sat in the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin – AN ASTON MARTIN! JAMES BOND’S CAR! – I am having a bit of a moment. Later this evening, at Aston Martin Leeds, is the main event. The car dealership is filled with Aston Martins identical to those seen in Bond films through the years. Oh! There’s a DBS like Bond’s wedding car in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service! Ah! That’s a V12 Vanquish, like the ‘invisible’ car from Die Another Day! Nfgh! That’s a silver DB5, the Goldfinger car! Over here, the pièce de résistance: an Aston Martin DB10. In celebration of the manufacturer’s long association with the Bond franchise, this new model was created especially for SPECTRE; only ten will ever be made, eight of these used as stunt cars in the movie itself. And unlike the other replica vehicles on display tonight, this one is the real deal – one of those eight seen onscreen. After attendees have mingled and been suitably refreshed (yes, the bar is serving vodka martinis; yes, I do partake; I must report they are stirred, not shaken), the evening’s guest speaker takes to the stage: rally champion and stunt driver Mark Higgins. Mark is arguably more Bond than Daniel Craig. That car chase through Rome in SPECTRE? That’s Mark with his foot to the floor, not Daniel. Any driver’s dream job – but, says Mark, not without its challenges. “We spent one month in Rome, the whole of March, shooting a sequence that ended up making about two minutes of screen time in the final film,” Mark says, “And there are 350 film crew, 16 security people, 150 extras on location – about 1,000 people there in total, all for this two-car chase. So the pressure to get it right is pretty immense.” A professional driver from the age of 17, Isle of Man native Mark has won the British Rally Championship three times. His appearances on camera are another arrow in his quiver; his stunt CV includes work on Top Gear with Ben Collins, aka The Stig. He began his association with Bond on the

second Daniel Craig film, Quantum of Solace, and together with his team won an award for stunt work on its follow-up, Skyfall. But as well as being Bond, Mark’s work on the films throws up some other surreal moments as well… “I spent most of Skyfall dressed up as the actress who plays Moneypenny, Naomie Harris – hair, make-up, everything,” Mark laughs. “Once she came in to the dressing room as I was being put into costume – that was a weird day!” Whatever the outfit – dinner jacket or drag – it’s fair to say Mark’s position as 007 stunt driver is safe. Cut back to me in the Aston Martin DB9 GT, tootling along behind the tractor. Despite my love of Bond, I do not share my fictional idol’s skill with or knowledge of cars. For the petrolheads, here are the vital statistics about the one I’m currently driving. 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine. Touchtronic II sixspeed transmission with electronic shift-bywire control system. Zero to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. No? Me neither. All I know is it goes fast, and looks gorgeous while it’s doing it. This particular model of Aston Martin is the latest version of the DB9 – the one before the SPECTRE car – and will set you back some £140,000. But that weighty price tag

gets you a vehicle truly worthy of a secret agent. Little wonder that Bond has such a strong and lengthy connection with Aston Martin: both are quintessentially British and the very definition of style. The DB9 GT even has a gadget or two. Before we set off, Richard, the nice man from Aston Martin who is contractually obligated to ride along with me to make sure I don’t die (or worse, put a dent in the Aston), shows me the controls. He touches a button – and on either side of the dashboard, up pop two Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers. Not quite hidden machine guns, but still pretty cool. Later, as we pull onto the motorway to head back to the garage, Richard presses another button that switches the DB9 into ‘Sport’ mode. The exhaust lets out a leonine roar and our heads hit the seats as the car thrusts forward, all speed and fury. And though I know I have to hand the keys back soon and that my nostalgic trip is almost over, in that moment I am Bond again. I look in the rear view mirror at the hired goons giving chase. My finger pauses over the trigger, hovering, hovering… JCT 600 Aston Martin Leeds Ring Road, Lower Wortley, LS12 6AA Tel: 0844 844 3108 www.jct600.co.uk

Leeds - capital of the North. Northside a magazine that celebrates all that’s best about this vibrant, growing city. From luxurious living to the finest in dining out, you’ll find it all in Northside, free every month to addresses not only in the affluent areas of north Leeds, but also Harrogate, York and surrounding villages. An essential part of Leeds life since 1995.

y first Sukhothai experience was a decidedly intimate affair.

Doncaster hosts world première of Northern Ballet’s Jane Eyre GET SWEPT AWAY BY UNRIVALLED STORYTELLING, DANCE AND LIVE MUSIC AS NORTHERN BALLET COME BACK TO DONCASTER TO PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIÈRE OF JANE EYRE AT CAST, DONCASTER FROM THURSDAY 19 TO SATURDAY 21 MAY.

EXCLUSIVE DESIGNER FASHIONS

aving first visited Doncaster in May 2015 with Madame Butterfly to great success, Northern Ballet return with a brand new full-length ballet celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth. Jane Eyre is one of literature’s greatest heroines. Orphaned at a young age and cruelly treated by her Aunt, Jane is a plain but intelligent child who grows up knowing little kindness. Sent away to a charitable school, she later accepts a position as a Governess at Thornfield, a gentleman’s manor whose master is the dark and impassioned Mr Rochester. In spite of their social differences, an unlikely bond grows between the pair but as their romance develops, it becomes clear that Mr Rochester has a hidden past that threatens to ruin them both. A dramatic tale of romance, jealousy and dark secrets, Jane Eyre is the story

of one woman’s indomitable spirit overcoming all boundaries. This new ballet is choreographed by international dance maker Cathy Marston, who was previously Associate Artist at the Royal Opera House (2002-2006) and Director of the Bern Ballett in Switzerland (2007 – 2013). She has brought on board an impressive creative team, including composer Philip Feeney, whose credits for Northern Ballet include Dracula and Cinderella. Patrick Kinmonth, who has worked closely with photographer Mario Testino designing numerous campaigns for Gucci,Valentino,Versace and Dior designed the sets and costumes. As the daughter of two English teachers, Cathy was first introduced to Jane Eyre as a child. We caught up with her during rehearsals and asked her to tell us about bringing Charlotte’s Brontë’s iconic novel from page to stage. “Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was a novel far ahead of its time and when I think of Jane Eyre I feel inspired by images of her passionate but 'impossible' relationship with Mr Rochester, the fire and emotional destruction symbolised by Bertha

Mason - the infamous 'woman in the attic', the contrasting icy moorland through which she seems to run from one chapter of her life to another, and of course her final reunion with Rochester. “But these images only touch the surface of a character and a book that continue to provoke and move generation after generation, re-read after re-read.” Often drawn to strong female characters, Cathy explained that: “Jane is considered an early feminist character. She feels she is fighting the outside world but she is also fighting herself. Her reactions are seldom obvious and we must always ask ’what would Jane do here’ ” Jane Eyre is Cathy’s second fulllength production for Northern Ballet, following an adaptation of the Dickens classic A Tale of Two Cities in 2008. On returning to work with the Leedsbased company, Cathy said: “Creating for Northern Ballet is a joy because everyone in the organisation shares my passion for telling and digging deep into stories through dance. Though the Company has excellent technique and production values, it is their unparalleled ability as dance actors that I love most.” Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE added: “Having already adapted Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights it seems appropriate that Northern Ballet should also immortalise her sister’s Jane Eyre through dance and doing so in the bicentennial anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth makes it all the more special.”

CLASSIC LOOKS, REASONABLE PRICES AND FRIENDLY SERVICE COMBINE TO MAKE GEORGIE’S BOUTIQUE A MUST FOR FASHIONISTAS OF ALL AGES. f the last 18 years have taught Georgie Roberts anything, it’s that many fashion trends have a habit of coming back around. However, it’s nice to know that the personal and friendly customer service at Georgie’s Boutique never goes out of style. The boutique is located in the fashionable West Park area of Harrogate and is proud to be an independent women’s wear boutique stocking quality, yet affordable brands such as Aideen Bodkin, Forever Unique, Oui, Javier Simorra, Inwear, Almost Famous, Bariloche and many more. Joint owner Georgie has been in the retail industry for 27 years, starting out as an assistant at a successful country wear store, before opening her own store Georgie’s Boutique. Five years later, the demands of her busy family life meant she needed a little help, so Georgie’s mother Ann Day stepped in as joint owner in 2003. Ann is now in charge of accounts and helps with the day-to-day running of the shop, whilst Georgie enjoys the creative side of the business, such as putting outfits together and dressing the window spaces with this sea-son’s must-haves. However, Georgie knows from experience that what really drives her business is the strong relationship she and her dedicated team have with their customers. “Customer loyalty is key to our success,” says Georgie. “We’re helpful, not pushy, and

I

believe in looking after our customers. We are always happy to source products from individual, smaller companies and over the years, many of our customers have become our friends.” Georgie’s offers everything from smart casual wear such as jackets and shirts, to evening dresses. They have a wide selection of wedding outfits including a gorgeous wedding range by Aideen Bodkin and quality cashmere

including jewellery and handbags to complete your look. And the best part? You get all the most rare and unique brands without the hefty price tags. As well as establishing themselves as one of the friendliest and best stocked women’s wear stores in the area, Georgie’s Boutique has traded at many charity fairs over the years, most notably at Castle Howard, Ripley Castle and Newmarket Racecourse. Ten per cent of the proceeds from these sales went to various charities close to the Georgie’s heart, including NSPCC and Macmillan. Georgie’s clothing is aimed at women aged 30 to 80, but as Georgie has found – women from either side of this age bracket dress more alike than you’d think. “We have a whole range of styles, but there are a number of items older and younger customers agree on,” confirms Georgie. “I had a 70-year-old buy a poncho and later that day I sold the same poncho to a woman in her twenties. Some fashion items remain classics.” Call into Georgie’s Boutique for some advice or for a coffee or a prosecco and a browse. If you’re still not sure what you’re looking for, they also offer a personal customer service by appointment. Georgie’s Boutique 18 West Park, Harrogate, HG1 1BJ Tel: 01423 560092

2019 is set to be the year that Rebecca Lucy Taylor, aka Self Esteem, drops her debut album on the world. For a long time Rebecca was dividing her attention, working on painting and prints, and video, as Self Esteem, whilst the day job was writing and performing as one half of Slow Club, but now the music and the day job is Self Esteem too, and Rebecca is revelling in it. Witty, intelligent, extrovert and piercingly insightful, Rebecca no longer has to worry about anybody else’s opinion or treading on any

Her recent single ‘Rollout’ has had extensive support at BBC Radio 6 Music, earning a spot on their coveted AList, it’s only a matter of time before she explodes. We caught up with her for a (very) quick chat.

Love him or loathe him, as the first Somali, youngest-ever and first Green Party councillor to hold the role, you can’t deny he’s made a big impression. And he’s not even 30. Already confirmed to open the Taste of Independent Sheffield Festival on 21 September (see page 10 for more), he’s recently taken to the airwaves as a guest presenter a new evening show on BBC Radio Sheffield. The Monday Night Social is a new show featuring ‘communities, culture and conversation’, and Magid was one of a series of new presenters lined up to host the programme. Other presenters Howard Middleton who appeared on the Great British Bake Off in 2013 and drag artist Luke Hague, who is also known as Vivian Twist. Speaking prior to his radio debut, he said: “I can’t wait to present my first show on BBC Radio Sheffield and the new format is a great way to meet different characters from our communities, understand our differences and celebrate what we have in common as well. “I’m really impressed by the work the station is doing to make their programmes more inclusive and more creative. It’s brilliant to be part of their team in such a special year for me.” Katrina Bunker, editor of BBC Radio Sheffield, said: “We’re really excited about our new evening shows and we’ve worked hard to make sure we’re reaching out to new audiences and hearing new stories and new

online suicide prevention course. Magid said: “We sadly are living in a society where stigma keeps many people from seeking help and treatment for themselves and stops others from even talking about it. “We seriously need to change the culture around mental health and suicide, look out for one another and show compassion for one another. Supporting a close friend who was having suicidal thoughts inspired this campaign as I know there is so much we can all be doing to tackle it.” Magid has set himself a target to get 100 organisations to sign up to the charter by the end of the month. And as ever, he’s not mucking about, with the FA, BBC and local authorities already in his sights, to name but a few. The University of Sheffield and its Students’ Union have become the first organisations in the country to back the campaign. His next task is to launch an ‘I Love Sheffield’ day. As someone who likes to #ShoutAboutSheff’, we’ll be keeping a close eye on that one.

CHRISTMAS is considered one of the most special times of the year for a lot of us. A time to catch up with loved ones you might not have seen in a while, relax on the sofa with a drink in hand and fall in and out of sleep while a re-run you’ve probably seen a hundred times plays on the telly. While there’s a lot to love about Christmas, it can be a stressful time too, especially for whoever’s drawn the short straw as chef. If it’s up to you to feed what can feel like an army, you’re probably already thinking of ways to cut down the time you’ll spend in the kitchen, but one thing you likely haven’t considered is that there’s more than one option on Christmas Day than a big turkey dinner. It may well be blasphemy to some as we’ve been eating turkey on Christmas Day since the 16th century, but times are changing and family-time is as important

as ever, so why spend the day in the kitchen when you could spend it with those closest to you instead? If you really can’t imagine sitting down to anything other than a hearty roast after two or three glasses of bucks fizz, why not cook up something simple yet special on the night before Christmas instead? We paid a visit to Brocco on the Park where Lewis Platt gave us his take on what would make a great alternative Christmas meal. “You want something light, you don’t want something heavy or too hard to make,” said Lewis, when asked why this would make the perfect alternative Christmas menu. Lewis shared with us a three-course meal that’s bound to make any mouth water and will surely go down a treat whether you’re hosting a family feast or one just for the grown-ups. It might seem like three courses is a lot

to take on, but these three recipes are quick and easy to follow, and none of them call for long lists of hard to find ingredients. Everything you’ll need to put together this impressive meal can be found at your local supermarket, and if you think you’ll be pushed for time during the busiest days of the festive period, a lot of this menu can be prepped beforehand (Lewis even tells us that the fondant is even better if left chilled for a day or two). So if you can’t face another Christmas trying to remember who does and doesn’t like sprouts and whether or not goose fat really will make for the perfect roast potato, set aside a couple of hours to prepare something different, and spend the rest of your time enjoying the company of those around you. Lewis’s recipes are designed to serve four, but can easily be amended if you’re cooking for a larger group.

characters we don’t currently hear in our daytime shows.” The Lord Mayor has also launched a bold new campaign asking organisations across the country to do more to tackle suicide by signing up to a new charter. The UK Suicide Prevention Charter urges organisations to create, evolve and enhance policies to support mental wellbeing and to develop their understanding of the risk factors around suicide, so they can target interventions. It also urges organisations to break the silence, offer mental health support, and educate their communities to reduce the risk of suicide and self-harming behaviour, as well as encouraging their employees and members to take an

“ We have been advertising in Image for some time now and find that it is great brand awareness for us as a company, a good talking point in our appointments and a great platform to showcase our efforts in the community. Steph has been assisting me with the editorial pages we run in the magazine monthly and my column ‘ask the expert’. She always has a very forward-thinking and enthusiastic approach to our page and I am always excited to hear and see her ideas and outcome. To say I am pleased every month would be an understatement. I feel that Steph is valued asset to the Regional Magazine Company and it is a pleasure dealing with her. ” Samuel Reaney, branch manager of Haybrook Crystal Peaks

“ Crag House Farm is home to the Leeds charity Caring For Life. As a way of generating income for the charity we have opened a Restaurant, café, farm shop and garden nurseries in the grounds of the farm and the beautiful countryside on the edge of North Leeds. As you can imagine, every penny counts as all profits go towards the work of the charity. This means that where we choose to advertise is very important. We have advertised with Northside for a few years now and have received two double page editorials written by Phoebe Seymour. The way Phoebe has captured the work we do with vulnerable people and how she has described what we are trying to do here in terms of generating income has been wonderful. We have seen a direct correlation to the distribution of the magazine and footfall increasing. The placement of the magazine has also proved successful with customers visiting after receiving it at home, as well as finding it in business locations such as private hospitals. We are delighted with the service we have received and will be continuing to use Northside for the foreseeable future. ” Buffy Parkinson, Caring For Life

“ RMC Media has always offered Dronfield Carpets & Floors a friendly, professional service during the three years we have been advertising with them. ” Sharon Smith, Dronfield Carpets & Floors

“ RMC Media is a great supporter of local businesses and Bradfield Brewery has benefited from this support. The Sixer magazine in particular has supported our business not just with advertising but with editorial features and joint projects. We like to show solidarity within the local business sector and RMC Media provides an ideal platform for us to sit alongside other local businesses and encourages consumers to shop local. ” Lisa Moat, Bradfield Brewery

“ The Crown Hotel has advertised with Eastside since the very beginning. Being ‘the’ social magazine of the local area to Bawtry, it has always been important for the Crown to have a consistent message within the magazine – this usually comprising of a DPS each month plus the social side of what’s been happening at the Crown and in Bawtry. A big part of this also has been the Visit Bawtry supplement, which appears quarterly. Stephanie Burns has been our contact for editorial and has always been extremely professional, prompt and articulate. She just ‘gets us’. Writing about the Crown each month, Stephanie has a total feel for all things Crown. She knows who we are and what we are about. She is almost part of the team! Once the pieces are written, we are then handed over to Terri for design and it always results in a great, readable DPS. We send Terri what’s been happening at the Crown – balls, dinners, wedding events, new restaurant menus and racing, to name just a few of the many goings on. We have also been extremely honoured to have started and hosted the Eastside Restaurant Awards with Terri and the team. Each year the event grows and grows and is one of the biggest nights in the area for all eateries and restaurants. To sum up, Eastside magazine hits our target markets and enables us to promote weddings, the restaurant, the bar and any events we have going on at the hotel. It works, and this is why we have been a loyal customer every month for years. So happy 30th, team Eastside, from the team at the Crown Hotel Bawtry! ” The Crown Hotel, Bawtry

“ We’ve been advertising with Sixer since our owner Gina took over 20 years ago. A magazine based in Hillsborough was a new concept and this made us want to work with them. Every member of staff on the Sixer is professional and supportive. We are treated well, whether we choose to advertise or leave it a couple of months. We always get exactly what we want within our budget. We’ve had a good, and sometimes, phenomenal response from adverts and editorials. We’re happy to write our own copy, but are also pleased when someone comes out to meet us. Our clients often read it in the salon. It’s a magazine that gets people chatting and represents the community well. Equally, when I need a service, I look it up in the Sixer. Congratulations on your 30th anniversary RMC Media. We wish you another 30. You are our first port of call. ” Reni Thackeray, Kaleidoscope

“ I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for including Nikki in this month’s Women In Business feature. We think it looks fantastic. Your design team have done a fab job – we especially like the strong quote pulled out at the top of the page. I don’t think we could have asked for better. ” Samantha Ellis, Marketing Team Leader, Employer Responsiveness Unit

“ On behalf of myself and the management group I would like to take the opportunity to say a great big thank you for your hard work at the magazine. We are delighted with all the work you have accomplished, and in particular Charles for his patience working with the brand colour scheme to develop the folders etc. We look forward to a long working relationship, it is a pleasure to work with professionals who are also nice people. It has been a particularly challenging workload for us in this past few weeks and your help has been invaluable. ” Beryl Henshaw, Managing Director, B&E Together Ltd.
