Christmas BearTrail Meet the winners of our festive competition

Our Santa-sized step into making this season an even more fun time for the kids in the run up to Christmas proved to be a huge success as we were inundated with entries for our Lego Christmas Bear Trail. Our ten winners were invited to a special ceremony at the OEC on 14 December where they received their prizes. Lexi and Riley were our big winners and received a bespoke bear each as well as a £50 voucher to spend in Bricks and Bits Toy Shop , whilst there were also seven £10 vouchers to spend in Bricks 'n' Bits, and a festive Lego set. A festive Lego set was also awarded to the best picture chosen from those posted on social media. Well done to all the children and families who took part.

Love is in the air Look local for Valentine’s Day this year. Valentine's Day is approaching which means thoughts are turning to how best treat your loved one. Whether you're planning on surprising your other half with a huge bunch of flowers, a gorgeous gift, a fancy dinner or even a voucher to indulge in their favourite beauty treatment, did you know that you can find everything you need here in Hillsborough? You'll find florists, gift shops, card shops, restaurants, pubs and bars to enjoy a drink or two and, for the ultimate pamper gift, a host of beauty salons offering everything from nail and skin treatments to hair and tanning, everything you need to look fantastic for 14 February. Here are some recommended businesses to help make your Valentine's Day a huge success and, hopefully, stress-free. *** If you want to treat your loved one to a special Valentines meal you’re spoilt for choice in Hillsborough. Sette Colli, on Bradfield Road, is a Mexican-Italian restaurant owned and run by Paulo Amaral and Paulo Ferreira. They are offering a set menu for Valentines, priced at £31.95 per person, which includes dishes such as Mare Monte, Pollo Acapulco and Salmon Valentino, while you can choose from a choice of sweets. You’ll also receive a ‘Love on the Rocks’ cocktail. The Orange Bird is one of the newer additions to the Hillsborough area and has quickly wowed its customers with its blend of South African and international cuisine. They use a traditional Braai to cook a lot of there dishes. Like the sound of Cape Malay pickled curry cod, grapefruit, fragrant leaves or Braai whole sea bass, rhubarb, apple & chilli salad with smoked salmon vinegar dressing? Then this Middlewood neighbourhood kitchen is the place for you. 2nd Girlfriend is a lovely Mediterranean Italian restaurant situated in the heart of Hillsborough on Langsett Road and is the perfect choice for an intimate dinner this

Valentine’s Day. All produce is freshly sourced by hand, daily, from local markets bringing the highest quality direct to their customers. Also situated on Langsett Road is Envers Bar and Grill, which serves delicious Turkish food in relaxed surroundings. Their sharing platters are perfect for two and they also offer a set menu (£25pp) which includes mixed meze, a mixed grill and the choice of any dessert. If your Valentines evening includes pre- or post-dinner drinks, you can choose from a range of cocktails, craft ales and more. The Hillsborough Tap is well known in Hillsborough and specialises in craft ales and cask beers. The offer some of the best locally brewed beers in the area and take pride in welcoming new and exciting guests ales on a weekly basis. There’s also an extensive selection of wines and champagnes, perfect for toasting this most romantic of occasions and takeaway is available too. Northern Monkey is a small but perfectly formed bar on Middlewood Road, stocking over 70 gins and 25 rums as well as ales that are locally sourced and brewed in Sheffield. It’s a cosy and intimate space, perfect for couples to enjoy Valentine’s Day in style. Further along Middlewood Road, and close to the park, is Pangolin Craft Beer but if you think it will only appeal to ale drinkers, think again. You’ll also find a curated wine selection by KASK and a small selection of cider and pre-

mixed spirits. They offer a take-out service too - if you’re cooking at home, why not pop out for a bottle of something special? Nothing quite says Valentines like a huge bunch of flowers and you’ll find just what you’re looking for at Monica F Hewitt florist on Middlewood Road. They provide flowers for all occasions and you’ll find a tailored selection for 14 February, from boxes of rose petals to stunning seasonal bouquets. The Flower Bowl in the heart of Hillsborough has been established for over 70 years creating bespoke bouquets either for collection in store or delivery. If you’re not saying it with flowers you can say ‘happy Valentines’ with unique gifts from Annie Jude on Middlewood Road. The emporium was launched by Faith Nicholson after she discovered cross-stitching during and lockdown and showcases handmade items cherry-picked from small businesses across the city. Whether you’re looking to pamper your partner, or purchase a voucher for future treatments, Posh FX on Middlewood Road have everything you need to treat your significant other. From eyelash extensions to microblading and hair extensions to styling, you’ll step out of the salon feeling a million dollars. However you choose to treat your loved one this Valentines, make sure your discover what’s on your doorstep in Hillsborough.

Easter Duck Hunt Due to the success of the Christmas Bear Trail, Hillsborough Together will be doing an Easter Duck Hunt around the area. This will be bigger than the Bear Trail and will feature an increased number of businesses. There will be Easter Eggs to be won and the Hunt will run from 16 March to 16 April. We have many events planned throughout the year so keep a look out on social media for announcements.

Spring cleaning Moving into spring, Hillsborough Together will begin its Spring clean with pavements being steamcleaned and street furniture being cleaned or replaced. Once complete, some floral arrangements will be introduced into the area to brighten it up and we will be installing benches in selected spots, so you can rest your weary legs and feet as you stop for a break in your shopping or grab a bite to eat on the go. In our continued quest to enhance first impressions, we will be introducing a shopfront improvement scheme to help local businesses with improving their store fronts and improving the overall look of our high street. Following on from this, we will be looking for local artists to assist us with adding some art work to the local area.

Childrens activities Hillsborough Market? We're looking at and considering a variety of options to bring some form of market / stalls / event into the area to support local enterprises / businesses that will bring something fresh and interesting to the district. Watch this space for more in due course.

Contact us: hello@hillsboroughtogether.co.uk

Bricks and Bits Toy Shop will be bringing some childrens activities to the area and these will be announced in due course.

Mother’s Day If you’re looking to treat your mum on 27 March, look no further than Hillsborough. From gifts and flowers to vouchers and meals out there is plenty to choose from in this bustling enclave of North Sheffield. Make sure you check out the shops, salons and more for something unique.

he Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 is here and, for the first time in the history of the Pantone Colour of the Year, they have created an entirely new colour: Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri. The combination of violet red undertones and blues represents the transformation of the physical and digital world. This transformation has emerged following lockdowns and isolations which has meant the digital world has taken a new place in our lives. This shift is seen in many areas including in digital art, the NFT phenomenon (Google it!) and the rise of the metaverse. We are breaking new frontiers and with them come new possibilities and transformations. Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri is described by Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, as conveying a “spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions”. We think it’s going to be a hit! And as well as naming their colour of the year, Pantone have also selected a ‘Spring/Summer 2022 Colour Palette’, which we have also featured over the next few pages. From Cascade to Super Sonic, there’s a colour to suit every mood.

It’s all about individuality very year we see new bridal trends exploding into weddings across the country, whether it be dress styles, table décor or colour palettes. With inspiration from the fashion industry, themes seen on the runway filter into weddings and bring trends for brides to adopt and re-work. With major emphasis in 2022 on individuality, weddings are predicted to become more unique and personal, in both style and design. Bridesmaid dresses were one of the first wedding elements to show individual style and creativity. In colour, style and fabric, 2022’s trends will leave you looking like the best version of yourself, instead of being one in a group dressed identically and traditionally.

E

Mix not Match Bringing your bridesmaid’s sense of identity into their dresses could be the key to a beautifully personal wedding. Seen for years but trending now for 2022/2023 weddings, mix and match dresses are in. Giving your bridesmaids freedom to find their own dress, allows them to feel their most comfortable and confident to support you on your special day. However, the trick to styling the different dresses is cohesion. Following a colour palette is strongly advised to ensure your bridesmaids match and using one colour or shades of one colour would work even better. Alternatively, the dresses would remain a beautiful variation if they were similar styles but with different necklines or length. However much freedom you choose to give your bridesmaids, remember that having one thing in common (colour, neckline, style or length) will tie the dresses beautifully and bring order to your potential mix and match madness.

Bold is Better 2022 epitomises colour, vibrancy and life! After years of Covid negativity and neutral trends resembling our boredom, loud is back.

Pantone was one of the first to announce their colour of the year:Very Peri. The beautiful purple tone is welcomed to this year’s colour palette, alongside moody blues and seasonal greens. Already being styled in or purple... homes and wardrobes, these bold colours are soon to be Or something individual brought to bridal. The perfect colour options for bridesmaid dresses – shades of green – will look gorgeous for mix and match dresses, and if they’re sustainable, even better as the green will resemble this and tie in beautifully. Shades of blue and purple will match well together or can be brought in separately as block colour dresses that contrast the typical white/cream bridal wedding dresses. Regardless of which bold colours you chose to incorporate, if any, the option of joining this vibrant trend is there for inspiration.

Perfect Prints Unsurprisingly, matching this year’s wave of creativity, prints have made a bridal comeback. With the fashion trend of individuality inspiring new prints and styles for a less basic and played out look, weddings are seeing the same pattern. Prints are being used to give a new and unique look for the bridal party, contrasting gorgeously with simple wedding dresses. They can be mixed and matched as suggested above with a colour palette to avoid clashing, or

MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT BRIDESMAID TRENDS FOR 2022.

Go green...

bridesmaid dresses can use the same print with different styles for inclusivity (with different fits catering to different body shapes).

Stop the Stereotypical With the fashion industry finally moving further and further away from stereotypical styles, fits and gendered clothing, women have more freedom in the styles they can wear. Of course, we have always had the option of wearing any clothes (regardless of the gender they were designed for) but it’s hard to feel confident in outfits stereotyped for someone else. Now the world is becoming more progressive, society is helping women feel free in their choice of fit / style, allowing us to move away from the typical tight dress. The perfect example of this is seen in bridesmaids outfits; with the rise in searches for bridal jumpsuits and suits, it’s seeming finally more acceptable to feel comfortable in something other than a dress. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 33

Make it personal SIXER SPOKE TO PAULA McDONNELL ABOUT THE ROLE OF A CELEBRANT. hether you’re tying the knot or celebrating a significant birthday, you can make the occasion that bit more special by employing a celebrant. North Sheffield-based Paula McDonnell recently qualified as a professional celebrant after successfully completing her training through the International College of Professional Celebrants. For the uninitiated, a celebrant is someone who conducts personal and meaningful ceremonies that are individually created, with few restrictions imposed on location, timing, or content. They operate outside of any particular belief system or framework, adapting their ceremonies to suit the values of the individuals they are working with. We spoke to Paula to find out more.

W

Photography: Hayley Gell Photography www.hayleygellphotography.com

At what types of services would you find a celebrant?

Typically, a celebrant would conduct ceremonies held at key stages in a person’s life; a naming ceremony to welcome a child into a family, a wedding ceremony to celebrate a marriage* between two people, a vow renewal for those already married, perhaps to celebrate a significant anniversary, and a funeral to celebrate a person’s life after they have passed away. Celebrations of other life events are also growing in popularity, such as coming of age, coming out or gender transition. What are the benefits of using a celebrant?

One of our key aims is to create more awareness of how much choice people have when it comes to planning their key life events. With an independent celebrant you can acknowledge and weave in all beliefs, cultures and sentiments and create a ceremony that truly reflects you. Families meet and get to know their chosen celebrant in advance of the ceremony, which allows them to work together to create a meaningful occasion with someone they 34 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

know and will feel at ease with on the day. What attracted you to becoming a celebrant?

I think people are fascinating. I love finding out about their life stories and what makes them who they are and the impact they have on others or who has influenced them. Getting to meet people and work with them during life’s key moments is a privilege in my book and one which demands great care and commitment. Have you had any unusual requests?

Not yet! The advantage of having a celebrant is that we can accommodate most things. You may want your celebration to incorporate and honour a mixture of cultures. You could want your pet involved. You might be a Harry Potter superfan and want a ceremony that focuses on that! Whatever you need, I will always come up with ideas and suggestions and nobody else will have the same.

What are the best bits about your job?

The knowledge that I will help my clients create cherished memories for themselves, family, and friends by writing a unique and joyous ceremony, or being able to provide comfort and reassurance to them at a difficult and sad time in their lives. Paula will be at the Kelham Island Wedding Fayre on 6 February and Magna on 12 June. You can find out more by calling 07800 662257, emailing paulamcd4@gmail.com, or visit www.celebratingyou.net

* Current UK legislation means that celebrants cannot legally marry couples. They will write and deliver the wedding ceremony, but the legal paperwork must be carried out separately at a register office in the form of a statutory ceremony. This is a short service at minimal cost of £46.

Wear it again IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF YOUR WEDDING DRESS BEING STUCK IN A BOX, UPCYCLING CAN GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT SENTIMENTAL IDEAS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important. It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory. Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the

W

38 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

fashion industry. With people increasingly realising the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was pictured on the green carpet in an

upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam. Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so. There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

039 Sixer Feb22 27/01/2022 11:07 Page 1

Add a touch of lace

Work of art

To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace, simply fixing lace to a band for a statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.

One easy way to create truly beautiful art out of your dress, is by framing a piece of fabric/dress section. Resulting in a very sentimental piece, you can even stitch (or pay for a professional to stitch) your initials and date on the framed dress section. On a grander and more expensive scale, you could frame your whole gown. Turning your entire dress into a bigger art installation would create a statement piece in any house. There are a select few companies specialising in framing your dress, The Beautiful Frame Company for example, where it can be preserved professionally and very impressively, however you could buy a frame and glass, doing so yourself for much cheaper.

Confetti Fabric repurposed With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration. The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go. Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Dreamy duvet Same but different One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown. Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas). Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/cocktail look. Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.

Small and beautiful Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. If you feel this would be better made through experts, Little Doves online creates some beautiful pieces, or alternatively Infinity Keepsakes have made gorgeous christening dresses alongside other wedding keepsakes. 40 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Turning your wedding dress into a quilt maybe a bigger job than the rest, but will result in such a stunning and personal bed cover. For a simpler idea, you can create a smaller piece for a child in the family, maybe making a beautiful cot sheet. This is easy as you only need to cut a section, hemming for neatness if you desire. However, to make your own bed cover you might need some extra fabric to attach depending on how much space your dress will cover when cut into sections. If you would rather a professional’s touch, many sellers online offer custom, handmade covers/blankets, LoveMoody or Jemdesign567 on Etsy for example.

Wear it well

Picture this

Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies for earrings and cufflinks if you wish to make them to match, preserving your dress forever in gorgeous jewellery. Sellers on Etsy can make these for you if you would prefer; CeciLeibovitz and TreeTownPaper create some stunning pieces.

Covering a photo album is one of the simplest ideas, requiring only glue, scissors and an album. Wedding photos allow the magical memories to live on, capturing you and all your family members at their happiest, the images taken will be cherished forever. So, why not use some spare fabric from your dress to either cover a new album, potentially as a gift, or add sentiment to your current album. As you chose your dress and fabric, of course the piece was beautiful, when adding a section to a book, it in turn will look beautiful, with minimal effort.

Cuddly toys As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy. HandmadeByHenri or ThreadPaperStudio both sell these beautiful custom pieces on Etsy, providing a completely unique and personalised gift.

Bags of style One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress. Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued. As your dress fabric is already gorgeous, using it to make these pieces means they’ll easily look good and bring gorgeous sentiment. The option to embellish is there and patterns/tutorials can be found online for more guidance, alongside examples for inspiration.

A question of price IN THE FINAL PART OF OUR SERIES EXPLORING NATURAL AND LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS, PA JEWELLERY CONSIDER VALUE. ab-grown diamonds cost less than their natural equivalents. Comparing two stones of the same quality and size, the lab-grown option costs less. The difference is greater when comparing finer grade stones, since with natural diamonds finer material is rarer and demands a higher price. Although labgrown diamonds are also more expensive in higher grades, they increase less, widening the gap. Natural diamond prices are driven by the finite nature of the supply and cost of production. As mines get older and become deeper, the cost of recovering the diamonds increases while yields diminish. Eventually mines close because they are no longer viable: continued supply relies on new mines being discovered to fill the gaps left by depleted sources. All this means prices have generally increased over time. With lab-grown diamonds, the initial costs of production are high with a huge investment in infrastructure required, although over time this cost is covered. Additionally, the industry is rapidly developing, and techniques are becoming more efficient, decreasing costs. We cannot predict the future but have experience with other man-made gem products: when new to the market, synthetic moissanite and cubic zirconia had high prices that decreased over time. The complexity of producing lab-grown diamonds means they will probably never be ‘cheap’, but we are already seeing them follow the trend. As with all comparisons it is important judge overall value rather

L

than just price. Lab-grown diamonds are undeniably less expensive, but this does not necessarily mean better value. They are so new to the market that it is difficult to judge. We would never recommend jewellery or diamonds as an investment. Tax, high retail running costs and transition from new to second-hand mean you make a loss when selling. However, natural diamonds have an established value and second-hand market, and we are yet to see this with lab-grown stones. We also appreciate that, although an insurance valuation only represents the amount it would cost to replace the item, customers expect their diamond jewellery to increase in value over time. With lab-grown diamonds, the market is rapidly developing, and big brands are investing heavily in their lab-grown offerings, driving consumer awareness up and prices down. While we may feel comfortable paying a premium for the latest mobile phone, accepting that it will be obsolete within months, jewellery is different. It is not an everyday purchase or one we anticipate upgrading each year. Lab-grown diamonds give you a lower price for comparable size and quality but whether this constitutes better value remains to be seen and may depend on personal expectations in addition to the way the market develops. Confetti

Gilt-y pleasure WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO TREAT SOMEONE SPECIAL - OR JUST YOURSELF THESE GORGEOUS PATISSERIE ARE A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN. aris is one of the world’s great cities, filled with high fashion, haute cuisine and some of the world’s most stunning landmarks. And if you’ve been to the French capital, no doubt you’ve walked past one of those gorgeous patisseries where all the stunning cakes are lined up in the windows in the most tempting of fashions. Paired with a good cup of strong coffee, they’re a real indulgent treat. For a real slice of French heaven much closer to home, you can visit Gilt Patisserie, which recently opened on Hickmott Road after just over two years on Abbeydale Road. Owner Rob Wainwright brings over 20 years experience as a pastry chef to the area and his cakes and pastries look – and taste – every bit as good as those you’ll find in Saint-Sulpice or République. In the Hickmott Road shop you’ll find those same tempting window displays as well as fresh coffee, confectionery and traditional French products, from tapenades to marmalades and more. Rob makes modern style Petits gateaux, macarons, confectionery and Viennoiserie (pastries) onsite.

What’s your background?

The new premises on Hickmott Road

We caught up with the artisan to find out more. Tell us about Gilt Patisserie?

Gilt is a modern boutique patisserie that specialises in European style products with a French vibe. We product high quality, fresh produce on a daily basis using ingredients from all over the world. We are passionate about the art of

Twenty years or so ago I went to Castle College where I did three-year diploma under Mick Burk and his team. I then worked with some of Sheffield’s better restaurants before moving down to London to work for Yotam Ottolenghi for three years where I worked my way up to one of his head pastry chefs. I trained in Barcelona, France and under William Curley before returning to London to open Nopi with the Ottolenghi team. After four years I moved to Sydney where I worked in some of the best bakeries and patisseries including a senior role with Adriano Zumbo. I returned to Sheffield dying to do something for myself and started 4 Eyes Patisserie in my parent’s garage.

After two years I decided that wholesale wasn’t what I wanted to do so I left to open Gilt Patisserie on Abbeydale Road.

Rob Wainwright with his mum, Christine

Where do you get your inspiration?

It so easy to get ideas and recipes these days with social media and the internet. Books are coming out every month so ideas flow. The hard thing is sticking to what you believe in and not be too easily distracted what others are doing. I always like to try and do something different to push myself to try new flavours and keep the menu interesting. A lot of how I am in the kitchen and how I run Gilt is inspired from the chefs I’ve worked under in the past. The way I decorate, the flavours I like, it’s all from 15+ years of learning from good chefs in kitchens. How long does it take to perfect the art?

I’m always learning new things about the job with new ideas and trends evolving all the time. For me the main thing is there is nowhere to hide. You can’t just blag it and hope for the best. It’s a science! The more you know about how things might react the easier it becomes. There are so many different factors that can change in a day that will affect the final product so consistency is a big must. I’m 20 years in and there is so much more to learn. The deeper you get in to it the more consistent you become and the better the product will be. Finesse helps also. What makes Gilt Patisserie special?

We try and make the whole experience special so that before you have even tasted the cakes you have left the shop with a smile on your face. Beyond the looks there are different mouth feels, textures and flavour combinations. The high-end produce we use, the passion and knowledge that goes in to them makes them more special. Also, I think people relate then to memories of being elsewhere in the world remembering special times. What’s your favourite patisserie to make?

My favourite section in the kitchen has to be the Viennoiserie (croissants, brioche) section. Laminating dough is one you have to get right – with temperature and rolling, resting and shaping, it’s not right up until the cooking process that you realise you

missed the sugar out. If you don’t focus on it, it can be a nightmare, which makes it more exciting. Fortunately, I get to taste everything in the shop regularly. I think what I like probably shows in the items I put in the shop. I like sour, tangy, sharp things and if you know gilt, you’ll know passion fruit is often on. Hazelnut I’m a sucker for.

We have always offered the option for large celebration cakes on the version of the current range at the time. We are happy to offer larger events inducing weddings, birthday and any other special occasions. We get asked to do macaron towers, large display wedding cakes, individual cakes for weddings, confectionery for wedding favours. I’m always happy to discuss options.

In Westside this month, we have our Confetti wedding special. Do you cater for special occasions?

What are your future plans?

My plans are to hit it hard this year, take some staff on, open more often and bring back the confectionery section to full power along with pushing the coffee and retail section. Gilt en Route, our Sunday brunch delivery pack will reappear twice a month as of February. We would also like to get involved in local events around the city to help increase the brand name. Judith Tucker, Night fitties - Do not walk on the grass verge, 2019 © the artist

Exhibition Exhibition Where We Live Until 5 June Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Presenting five locations across England, including the city’s Park Hill housing estate, Where We Live interrogates our social landscape at a time of profound political and social change. The exhibition brings together paintings by Sheffield’s own Mandy Payne, alongside 50 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

work by Trevor Burgess, Jonathan Hooper, Narbi Price and Judith Tucker. Each series of paintings offers the viewer multiple perspectives on the notion of home and our sense of place. Tensions in the images between legacies of the past, the reality of the present and often conflicting visions of the future are layered with poetic texts foregrounding the voices of the residents. Each artist raises acute questions of how England’s landscape and architecture is layered over potent legacies of the past, and reveals conflicted visions of the present and the future. In the wake of a pandemic that

confined us to our homes, it questions what the idea of home looks and feels like in the midst of multiple displacements and disorientating political, social and environmental change. In doing so, the exhibition foregrounds the voices of the communities who inhabit the depicted locations, speaking through texts, poetry, podcasts, digital and live discourse about Where We Live. The exhibition aims to demonstrate how the practice of making paintings in series over an extended period allows the artist to examine the multiple facets and topographies of a place.

TRAVEL

Capital gains WITH HISTORY, TOP ATTRACTIONS AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE, EDINBURGH IS HARD TO BEAT.

hilst the temptation to visit farflung shores has returned, the UK still holds plenty of charm for the casual traveller, particularly if you’re looking for a short break to entertain friends or family. With an abundance of history, top quality attractions and beautiful architecture, Edinburgh takes some beating. I took the whole family north of the border for a few days and loved every minute of it. I’d visited the Scottish capital before but purely for work purposes so was intrigued as to what the city had to offer from a leisure perspective. In short, it had everything.

W

54 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

If you’ve never visited before, Edinburgh is essentially a city of two halves (and much more besides). On one side you’ve got the medieval old town, which is characterised by its centuriesold buildings and narrow alleyways. At its heart, perched on an extinct volcano, is Edinburgh Castle. In the elegant New Town, Georgian townhouses line the broad avenues and open squares whilst shoppers hit chain stores on Princes Street and upscale boutiques on and around George Street. We’d picked the perfect base for our two-night stay. The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile was located in the

old town part of the city and just a tenminute walk from Waverley train station. The Royal Mile is one of the main thoroughfares in the city and connects the castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which rests in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat. It is overlooked by impressive, towering tenement buildings and is home to many of the city’s main attractions as well as an abundance of souvenir shops, pubs and restaurants. The Adagio sits at the lower end of the Royal Mile and is a four-star residence offering 146 furnished apartments and studios fitted with a

fully-equipped kitchen. The rooms are perfect for those looking for a bit more space and flexibility, particularly if you’re staying for a much longer period. The aparthotel’s services includes access to a fitness room and private car park and breakfast is served in the cafeteria every morning (supplementary charge). We stayed in a one-bedroom

apartment for four people which had a bedroom with a double bed and a twin sofa bed which gave us more than enough space to relax. We didn’t take advantage of the kitchen during our short stay but can see the attraction for those staying longer - whilst there are plenty of food options close by, eating out can get expensive. We started our exploring on the old town side, heading up to the castle before turning down through the Grassmarket and up to the National Museum of Scotland. This free-to-enter museum is the UK’s most popular attraction outside of London and is worth visiting for the light-filled atrium of the Grand Gallery alone. Exhibitions cover Art, Design and Fashion, Natural World, Science and Technology, and Scottish History and Archaeology, the latter of which is housed in a modern extension to the building. Here there’s also a fabulous roof terrace with fantastic views of the city. Top of the agenda for my children was a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, which we travelled to by bus. It took about 20 minutes and an all-day family ticket (£9.50) offered great value for money. The zoo is set in over 82 acres of wooded hillside and is home to over 2,500 animals including the giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian - the only ones in the UK. Both are housed in their own enclosures with large outdoor areas that have lots of trees, large wooden climbing frames and pond for them to explore. Unfortunately they were both sleeping during our visit but they were impressive all the same. Also at Edinburgh Zoo you’ll find

Tiger Tracks, a new enclosure which houses their Sumatran tigers and gives you the perfect opportunity to get up close to these magnificent beasts. The koalas Goonaroo, Tanami, Kalari, Inala and Dameeli are also housed in their own space and were hugely popular with my two children too. We also loved the penguins, pygmy hippos and giraffes. The zoo is easy to navigate and there are plenty of food options at the Grasslands Restaurant or Jungle Cafe. Plentiful picnic areas mean you can take in your own snacks too. Getting the bus back into the centre of Edinburgh gave us the opportunity to explore the new town’s shopping areas which has recently been enhanced by the addition of the St James Quarter, home

to 80 retailers and 30 restaurants. Food-wise we stumbled across a couple of independent gems that we enjoyed so much we actually visited twice. Civerinos has three ‘slice’ venues in the city as well as a main restaurant and serves New York-style pizza that was some of the best we have tasted. We visited one of their slice restaurants on Forrest Road, close to the National Museum of Scotland, for huge slices (starting from £4) of pepperoni and margherita pizza washed down with ice cold cans of San Pellegrino. It was simple but tasty. Just down the road from Civerinos is Alandas Gelato which opened in the autumn and use Scottish cream and milk to make their Italian-style ice cream. Served in a cup or a cone, it was delicious. There was so much we didn’t do – and would have loved to have done – in Edinburgh but felt like we’d packed plenty into our three days there. The Adagio Aparthotel was a great location from which to explore and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again should we wish to venture further. For a short break, it had everything – even giant pandas.

Factbox: The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile is located at 231 Canongate. To find out more, call 0131 322 8299 or visit www.adagio-city.com Tickets for Edinburgh Zoo start from £21.95 for adults and £12.80 for children. Visit www.edinburghzoo.org.uk to find out more.

Volunteering at St Luke’s – it’s like a warm hug says Kemi Kemi Dina is encouraging people to join her and discover the ‘warm hug’ of being a St Luke’s Hospice retail volunteer. Kemi volunteers at the St Luke’s City Road shop as part of the NHS Project Choice scheme. Project Choice is a Specialist Post-16 College providing work experience as well as a supported internship programme that helps young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 with disabilities, learning disabilities, difficulties and/or Autism gain work experience and improve employability and independence skills. Denise raises £1,000 in memory of Gary’s 15 beautiful days Denise Wright has seen four closest members of her family, including husband Gary, spend their final days at St Luke’s Hospice. That was why she was determined to raise money for the charity in its 50th anniversary year, giving something back in recognition of all the support her family has received. And when friends at Sheffield’s BXF Gym in Penistone Road joined her for a series of eight high impact fitness sessions in just six days, they raised £1,000. “My husband Gary was only 58 when he died at St Luke’s and so were my sister Jackie and my brothers-in-law Joe and David,” Denise explained. “I know it might sound strange but we call it the 58 Club because that’s the age they all were they passed away as a result of cancer. “Gary was suffering from Stage 4 cancer which had spread through most of his body and the last 15 days of his life were in St Luke’s - and all I can say is that the support we received was excellent. It wasn’t only Gary they cared for - they allowed me to move in and stay with him and our children Daniel and Lauren were able to be with us for two night when we got near the end. “The most wonderful memory for me is that, because of the St Luke’s team, Gary was able to pass away in my arms. “It is absolutely priceless what they did for Gary and for the rest of my family and that is something I will never forget.”

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN FERRARI? RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT THE LATEST ADDITION TO THEIR ‘ONE-OFF’ RANGE AND MORE.

One of a kind The Ferrari BR20, the latest addition to the Prancing Horse’s One-Off series, has been unveiled and joins the most exclusive group in Maranello’s range: unique, absolutely bespoke cars crafted to the specifications of a client and designed as a clear expression of their own unique requirements. The BR20 is a two-seater V12 coupé developed on the GTC4Lusso platform, which in terms of its philosophy and styling approach, cleverly references the magnificent Ferrari coupés of the 1950s and 60s, without the slightest hint of nostalgia. Instead, it pulls off the challenging feat of marrying timeless elegance with muscular sportiness, effortlessly incorporating styling themes typical of some of the most iconic 12cylinders in Ferrari history, including the 410 SA and 500 Superfast. Designed for a longstanding client who was deeply involved in every step of its creation, the Ferrari BR20 represents a true interpretation of the traditional coachbuilder’s art, successfully transforming an existing model in a masterful and unique way taking inspiration from and paying homage to the company’s core values of innovation and passion.

Sleek and compact The Volkswagen Taigo, now open for order, is Volkswagen’s first SUV-coupé, bringing sleek looks, charisma and flexibility to the compact SUV segment. The model starts at £21,960 OTR for the model in Life specification, allied to a 1.0-litre, 95 PS TSI engine and five-speed manual gearbox. The newcomer features the higher seating position and ground clearance of an SUV, while also offering comfort and style. Personalisation is provided via a wide and vibrant range of paint colours, while further customisation is available optionally across various aspects of the interior. Customer demand for high levels of technology and connectivity are met, with wireless App-Connect and wireless smartphone charging, as well as streaming and internet services, all included from Life trim upwards. The Taigo range features four engine and gearbox configurations, with the combination depending on specification.

Four years after its launch, the ŠKODA Karoq has received an update. The update brings sustainable materials, new technology and more efficient engines, from the current EVO generation to the compact SUV. The wider, now hexagonal ŠKODA grille, slimmer headlights as well as tail lights, and aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels with black plastic Aero trim create fresh visual highlights. The new wheels, rear window finlets and a new rear spoiler all improve the car’s aerodynamics while lowering its CO2 emissions. The interior features new upholstery which, as an option, can be made from sustainable materials. New technology – such as full-LED Matrix headlights and an expanded range of assistance systems – also debuts in the range. Five efficient engines from Volkswagen Group’s EVO generation round off the Karoq’s update. Two diesels and three petrol engines deliver power outputs ranging from 110 PS to 190 PS.
