PROMOTION
Built to perfection WITH NEARLY 40 YEARS OF TRADING, DAVID J MARTIN IS STILL CREATING STUNNING BESPOKE FURNITURE. n these days of mass produced furniture, it’s good to know there’s a well-established local business dedicated to creating beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. David J Martin opened its doors in 1980, ran solely by David himself. Fast forward 39 years, and he now works alongside eight other members of staff, including his son who hopes to one day follow in his father’s business-savvy footsteps. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures that all of his staff are trained to the highest standard too, so that only the finest quality products are leaving the business. Not only does David J Martin have a stunning showroom, but customers are also amazed to find their huge on-site workroom on the bottom floor, meaning everything is done in-house, enabling owner David to guarantee high quality at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none, and this is what makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from
I
scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come, and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. They cater to all styles, from traditional to modern handless kitchens, while cocktail cabinets and cinema rooms are particularly on trend right now. After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paint-spraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling and there will be no discolouration – something that can happen with vinylwrapped doors. For those customers undertaking full
refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 39 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their furniture, whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line. The ‘Birdman of Bradfield’ OUTDOORS ENTHUSIAST DEAN RAE SPENDS MANY HOURS IN THE HILLS AROUND BRADFIELD DALE, CATCHING AND RINGING BIRDS. HE TALKS TO CHRIS WILSON ABOUT HIS FEATHERED ‘FRIENDS’.
t’s 4.30 on a Sunday morning, the middle of the night to most of us, but Crookes resident and wildlife enthusiast Dean Rae is setting out for the hills above Bradfield to check on his bird boxes. From moorland restoration to monitoring local wildlife, Dean lives for the great outdoors. Whether it’s his job helping Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust maintain and improve the habitats in and around the Peak District, or his voluntary work for Sheffield Bird Study Group and Sorby Beck Ringing Group he’ll be out in all weathers, trying to maintain and improve the natural world we all enjoy. Dean spends many hours in the hills around Bradfield Dale, catching and ringing birds. It’s more of a passion than a hobby, which started when he was a

schoolboy and continues to this day. As the long summer days kick in he can often be found heading off at first light to his preferred observations points, Ughill and Oak Piece, above Dale Dykes and Strines reservoirs. He is one of around 50 volunteers actively catching and ringing birds in Sheffield and Derbyshire, and has been doing it long enough to be qualified to work solo, without supervision. So what types of birds does he spot, how does he catch them and why? Dean says: “We are monitoring. If you catch and ring a bird and it’s caught again, you have information that can help you look at patterns of movement and dispersal. Similarly if you take information on weight and wing length, ageing and sexing, you are getting detailed information you could not get
just observing in the field. “Then you can look at trends over time and get information on food sources and the impact of local changes on habitats. “I go wherever the birds are, as long as I have the landowner’s permission. Oaks Piece is close to Ughill, above Dale Dyke and Strines reservoirs. It’s a ridge 250m above sea level and can get pretty bleak in winter. I was there in October ringing the last of the migrant birds as they dispersed. But once winter sets in it is too grim. “That’s when I came down to a lower level and with permission from Yorkshire Water I began ringing at Dale Dyke Reservoir in January, spending a small fortune to keep the bird feeders topped up and trying to make sure the squirrels and pheasants didn’t nab all the food. “It was a great success, I caught 62

birds in two hours once. Even though I was only 1km away from Oaks Piece I was 130m lower down and that made all the difference.” There are a number of ways to catch a bird, predominantly soft mist netting strung between two poles, not unlike a big tennis net. The mesh is very fine, not visible to the naked eye. (It has to be very fine because birds have tremendous eyesight for flying at breakneck speed). In the winter Dean will catch tits and finches of many types – blue, great, long tail coal, willow and chaffinch and if he’s lucky winter migrants like the brambling along with familiar garden birds like blackbirds, robins, dunnocks and wrens. And now the spring migrants are arriving Dean and his fellow volunteers are catching willow warblers, chiff chaffs, black caps, white throats, lesser white throats and pied flycatchers – as well as all sorts of birds that might be familiar in your own back garden such as blackbirds, robins and wrens. While vanishing wildlife is always a cause for concern, Dean reckons the North Sheffield area is a prime spot for birds to flourish. “We have a lot of continuous good quality habitat because we are on the edge of a national park,” he says. “And the farming is more pasture than crops, not too intense, which is also good news for wildlife.” One species that has declined in recent
years is the willow tit. Often this is due to the loss of habitat – intensity of agriculture, less set-aside land or winter cover crops. Willow tits rely on mature woodland but there are some areas where they can flourish. House sparrows are also on the ‘red list’. Numbers have declined nationwide over the last 50 years, but this is one area where anyone with a bit of back garden can help the conservationists’ cause. “There’s a lot we can all do to encourage wildlife in domestic gardens,” says Dean. “If you have lots of plants for cover, with more variety the better, and plenty of feeders and sources of water, then birds will come and if you can attract house sparrows it’s a lovely sight.” Aside from his volunteer work, Dean has two ‘proper’ jobs. One, as a freelance scientific copy editor and proof reader keeps him indoors and deskbound but his second job, as a casual land management assistant for Wildscapes, a subsidiary of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, finds him out in the wilds once more. Land management and moorland restoration are the key roles of Wildscapes and this involves going out and surveying habitats and individual species like bats and great crested newts. Where planning permission is involved, Wildscapes acts as an ecological consultancy. A much tougher, more physical side to the job involves spreading heather brash
and sphagnum moss on bare peat on moorland in and around Kinder, Derwent Valley, Howden and Ladybower. The peat is often a fallout from the Industrial Revolution’s acidification and acid rain and there are consequences for water purity when water comes off the moors into the streams and cloughs, through the Loxley and the Rivelin and Porter Brook, which is why Dean is part of a team that will walk miles to areas where heather brash will have been dropped by helicopter in tonne bags. “We drag the bags to where they are needed, get out our garden forks and spread it out. And because this work is done in areas where there are no trees, it’s illegal to be up there disturbing the birds in nesting season, so a lot of the work is done in autumn and winter.” Another gruelling side to the work is the planting of sphagnum moss, an incredible plant that can hold 20 times’ its own weight in water and expands massively when it rains. This slows the progress of water off the hills and helps prevent flooding in times of heavy rainfall. But there are no helicopter drops here. Dean and colleagues will load up their rucksacks with sphagnum moss, carry it to where it is most needed and spread it. “It’s bleak in bad weather,” he concedes. “But on a nice day you’re in a lovely setting and it’s the best job in the world.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 17

Hoyland Dismantling
Wood burning and Multi- fuel stoves are becoming ever more popular, and so if you are planning on having one fitted for next winter then now is the best time to be looking. At Hearth and Home on London Road we have a large selection of DEFRA approved models on display to suit every style of room whether it be in your living room, kitchen or conservatory. We don't just offer solid-fuel appliances, we cater for all needs with Gas and Electric stoves, fires and fireplaces too. Come and visit their family run showroom to see how they can help.
Hoyland Dismantling started out in demolition, dismantling and reclamation, but as time has progressed, so has the business and now they source and supply materials to trade and the general public. Good quality reclaimed materials have become increasingly hard to source, and they have looked down new avenues. This has led to them supplying a lot of new materials, so more than 75 per cent of what they sell is new. They source products not just in the UK, but from all over the world, and are constantly looking at new products and suppliers to ensure they can offer a wide range of good quality products at very competitive prices.

HEROES
By royal appointment A FORMER PROFESSIONAL SNOOKER PLAYER, WHO WENT ON TO FOUND A CLUB FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IN SHEFFIELD, WAS NAMED IN THIS YEAR’S HONOURS LIST. ASHLEY BIRCH SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT THE DAY HE MET PRINCE WILLIAM, AND THE UNUSUAL WAY HE BROKE THE ICE.
Steve Harrison MBE at Buckingham Palace with his four children
HEROES
teve Harrison, of Wisewood, was awarded an MBE in this year’s honours list for his services to sport, after spending 12 years on the main snooker tour, before setting up a snooker academy dedicated to helping people with learning difficulties. Steve set the club in 2007, partly in memory of his dad Ray, who himself was a paraplegic world champion in 1985, and has helped thousands of people with both learning and physical disabilities over the years since then. It was in recognition of the amazing work he has done that the local lad from S6 was given the prestigious honour. “It was amazing!” beams Steve: “I got the letter on 21 November and when I read it I got very emotional. I’ve got a picture of my father in my front room and all my passion and strife to do this is to grow my dad’s legacy. The fire in me comes from my father.” Steve’s dad Ray was a keen sportsman, even playing a game for Sheffield United, before a football injury resulted in him losing a leg. The resulting hospital stay meant he was in the bed next to Derek Dooley, who also lost his leg. That wasn’t the end of the bad luck for Ray, as a couple of years later he also lost his right lung. Because of his love of sport Ray was determined to find one that was accessible for him in a wheelchair. “He found snooker at the age of 20, 21 and he took it from there,” says Steve: “There wasn’t much snooker about in those days. He used used to play up at the old Lodge Moor Hospital and as a lad I used to go up there and watch him compete, but not only compete, he used to train people up as well. “I remember being 11 and I travelled to watch him compete in the paraplegic world championships where he won two bronze, a silver and the coveted gold medal in 1985, making him the world champion. He taught me everything.” Following in his dad’s footsteps, Steve went on to play on the main snooker tour, against the likes of Alex Higgins, Jimmy White and the late Paul Hunter, before hanging up his professional cue in 2005. The idea for the academy came after he was approached by a group of adults with learning disabilities who wanted to learn how to play the game. Steve decided there was probably more people with disabilities who would want to do the same and shortly after setting up as a social enterprise, the local authority contacted Steve and
S
began referring children to the service through social services. He now teaches kids not only to play snooker, but also how to socially interact, improving their social skills and bolstering their confidence, even helping them to get jobs. There are currently around 60 members between eight and 18 coming to free Saturday clubs between 10am and 3pm, as well as holiday clubs, which are all run from four tables in Walkley Snooker Centre. Steve said: “I want to make it bigger, I know it’s going to be difficult, but I keep pushing it forward. It’s not just about a game. “Snooker dropped out of the Paralympics in ’98 and I believe you need 12 countries to approach the Olympic committee to get reinstated, so I’ve been speaking to other countries to get it back in but at the minute, I’m just trying to grow it in the UK. “We rent on the first floor, in a great little club, but it’s limited with table space and accessibility for people with physical disabilities, so I’m keen to find a ground floor unit to put some snooker tables in, so we can let people in wheelchairs access the space. “We want to become more sustainable so when the club’s not open to our members, families can use it as well.” So, what about his big day out at
Buckingham Palace on 19 March, and meeting Prince William? “That was crazy! We went down the day before and I took my children down. I’ve got three girls Katie, Lucy and Elise and a boy called Harry. They were so proud. “We went through into the quadrant and went up the stairs where we were met by the royal dignitaries and so on, and I was invited upstairs with about 35 others who were receiving awards, and to be honest, I felt a bit lost up there! “Someone asked where I as from so I told them I’m a Sheffield lad, and someone else went, ‘doesn’t he sound like Sean Bean?’ So I thought that was quite funny. Next minute, some guy comes in and bangs his stick and tells us the procedure to meet Prince William. “The idea was you take three steps forward, turn to the left, bow and then when he ]Prince William] says ‘hello’, you reply, ‘hello, your royal highness’, all very formal. But my mind went blank, so I walked up, stopped and bowed, he said ‘hello’ and I said, ‘how’s it going, pal?’, he laughed, smiled and went, ‘not so bad, Steve, not so bad’.
“Someone asked where I as from so I told them I’m a Sheffield lad, and someone else went, ‘doesn’t he sound like Sean Bean? I thought that was quite funny.”

Top of the class ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION? DO THESE SCHOOL DAY PICTURES BRING BACK ANY FOND MEMORIES? BY CHRIS WILSON. hey say school days are the best days of your life. For some of us, maybe. Let’s hope all the youngsters featured in these classroom line-ups had reason to look back on their school days with a little fondness. Any familiar faces in these line-ups? If seeing these photos spark some memories, do get in touch and tell us all about it. Last week’s trio of train pictures provoked lots of nostalgia for the golden age of steam. Reader Victor Smith recognised the photograph at the top of the page as the former Wortley Railway Station, now closed, on the Great Central Railway between Deepcar and Penistone. The original building was opened on 14 July 1845, but this photo showed it following its rebuilding in 1888. Victor tells us that the station was close to Wortley Hall and the Earl of Wharncliffe had his own private waiting room for his own personal use. Sounds like the only way to travel! The picture on the bottom left hand
T
side of the page showed workmen at Chapeltown Great Central railway station which closed to passengers in December 1953 and the third image was of Silkstone Common Railway Station, simply known as Silkstone. The station closed in 1959 with the withdrawal of the Penistone-Barnsley-Doncaster stopping service, but was reopened in 1983 after Sheffield-Huddersfield services had been diverted via the line.

That wouldn’t happen if they weren’t getting an exceptional service. Design and project management is the key to many years’ of business success. Some companies might make one site visit and just leave the clients to the mercy of the contractors. But when you choose Visual Bathrooms to fit your bathroom, Eric or one of his team will visit three or four times during the
fitting to make sure everything is running smoothly. “When we start a job there’s no toand-froing,” he says. “We would normally start the project on a Monday and continue until completion. “All rubbish or old bathroom fittings are taken away, we tidy up at the end of a working day and if you only have one bathroom we’ll make sure you have a working toilet throughout the process. “It’s all about making the transition as smooth as possible and it doesn’t end when the job’s done. We’re always happy to come back and make sure there are no teething problems. I take as much pride in fitting a bathroom in a customer’s home as I would if it was my own.” That type of guaranteed piece of mind is just not available when you buy online, but if you do want to buy your

One theme of these articles has enabled individuals and groups to present the work they do to enhance our Parish. My colleague Cllr Stephen Bennett offers some thoughts as the Councillor for Wharncliffe Side ward whilst Michael Smith, Mike Bramham and Jenny van Tinteren respectively report on the work of the Worrall Environment Group, the Friends of Coronation Park and the Stannington Library Group. Stephen says, “I stood for election in 2015 because I believe in preserving and improving this outstanding parish for future generations through the maintenance of community activity, action and sympathetic development. As my passion is horses, the maintenance and improvement of off road access for all leisure activities, riding, cycling and walking on our byways, bridleways and green lanes has always been high priority for me. Using this network of paths, fallen trees, overgrown vegetation, fallen walls and fences come to light. I am pleased that items reported are now ďŹ xed more promptly, as are fallen or broken signage along our lanes and paths and the scourge of y tipping collected. It is one of my regular activities to check and report on large areas of the parish for any problems and to monitor the clearing up or repairs. We are lucky living in an area where we can enjoy the green ďŹ elds, moors and woods of this beautiful parish, but it is still blighted by litter. As a Councillor I have organised litter picking groups and regular ‘day picking’. As the activities are all provided free of charge one of our main tasks is to ďŹ nd sponsorship to pay the several thousand pounds that they cost. Tesco, Oughtibridge Gala and BradďŹ eld Parish Council are our main sponsors this year and we are very grateful to all of them. The Parish Council get a special mention as they not only provide money but help with the necessary facilities within the park. Without their help none of this would happen. This year the activities will be on Tuesday and Friday in Spring Bank Holiday and through the school summer holiday. The detail of dates and events will be advertised and available on our Facebook Page. On the other side of the Parish Stannington Library is steadily extending its locally owned book stocks using money raised by volunteers. Recent BradďŹ eld Parish Council contributions have been invested in new large print and audiobook titles for adults. “These contributions make it possible for us to keep our stocks up to date and extend them into new areas,â€? says library manager Dot 3VTTFMM Ă‚-BSHF QSJOU BOE BVEJP CPPLT BSF CPUI FYQFOTJWF JUFNT and if we relied solely on our own revenue, it would reduce the choice we can offer to borrowers. SPORT
Fighting for his future COULD TEAGN STOTT PUNCH HIS WAY TO PROFESSIONAL STATUS? THE UP AND COMING WISEWOOD BOXER IS ALREADY DREAMING OF THE BIG TIME, WRITES CHRIS WILSON.
heffield has a proud tradition in recent years of producing world class boxing talent and local youngster Teagn Stott is determined to follow recent famous names such as Herol Graham, Johnny Nelson, Naseem Hamed and Clinton Woods and go all the way to the top. The 15-year-old Forge Valley School pupil is already standing out from the crowd – hardly surprising for a teenager when you are 6 feet 3.5 inches and still growing. And after discovering a love of boxing at the age of eight he’s starting to win some big fights and achieve national recognition. In fact, as this issue of Sixer was going to print, the big lad from Wisewood was meeting up with the England boxing teams for his first induction into the ways of international sport. Then he was due to travel with the England squad to Cardiff to take part in a Tri-Nations tournament against some of the best young fighters in the country. The international call-up was the biggest moment yet for Teagn who is really starting to make a name for himself. Shortly before Christmas he won the NABGC (National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs) Boxing Championships, fighting in the under-75 kilos weight range.

SPORT
Teagn with Glyn Rhodes MBE
Shortly after that came the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) Championships, the biggest moment of Teagn’s sporting career so far, held very close to home at the Rotherham Magna Centre. “That was the biggest crowd I’ve boxed in front of, it was really exciting and I loved every minute of it,” says Teagn. “It was a really good standard, after a bye through to the three-quarter finals I was up against some top fighters so to win an ABA title was really special.” Teagn was always a little taller than everyone else in his age group, and then a growth spurt in Year Six left him towering above most of his contemporaries. This, of course, leads to certain advantages in the boxing ring when he is used to looking down on opponents. “I have got quite long arms and enjoy powering forward while keeping my opponents at range. I’m told I am quite good with my angles and my timing,” he says. Even so, boxing is a tough sport and Teagn has had to take some punishment on his route to the top. “I get hit in quite a few of my fights,” he says. “My last fight was against an England representative and he is fighting in the European championships soon. That was a really good, even fight, and that was when I was being assessed for whether I was good enough for an England call-up.” It’s obviously still a big learning curve for Teagn but as the standard of his opponents has improved his own boxing seems to have moved up a gear or two and he headed into his first England international experience on the back of nine straight wins. Teagn trains most days at Sheffield Boxing Centre, run by former lightweight boxer Glyn Rhodes MBE and based in the Foundation Building on Burton Street, Hillsborough. “I’m in the gym every day,” he says. “It’s never the same thing two days running and never boring.
“My dad Ryan did a bit of boxing when he was younger and it’s the only thing I have ever wanted to do. I took to it straight away for some reason. “I was only eight and played football, but waking up on cold Sunday mornings to play on cold, muddy pitches did not appeal to me. In the boxing gym it was warm and I never had to be persuaded to train.” For the moment Teagn is balancing his time between training in the gym and working towards his GCSEs at Forge Valley School but he’s already thinking about a time a few years down the road when he turns professional. “I haven’t spoken to Glyn Rhodes or anyone else about it; it’s just something I know inside me. I want it to happen.” That’s a long way in the future but in the short term Teagn is looking forward to turning 16 when competitive fights, strictly controlled at amateur schoolboy level, move from three two-minute rounds to three three-minute rounds. Having grown so fast the towering teenager will also have to see how tall he will be when he stops growing and how his body fills out.
“People tell me I will be a heavyweight or a cruiserweight but I think I will be a light heavyweight,” he says. He already has three sponsors form local businesses – Nick Firth Tiles, ManKind Barber Co. and Mad Clothing – and hopes to find more. If you think you can help this gifted young fighter reach his full potential in the boxing ring, contact Teagn on teagns@icloud.com

Flawless to Included FOR OUR LATEST DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT CLARITY. lmost all diamonds form with inclusions. These may be small crystals of other minerals that became trapped in the diamond as it formed, internal fractures or other irregularities in the crystal structure. This may mean that you see small dark marks or white lines or wisps within the stone. The clarity grade given to a diamond is an assessment of its relative freedom from these inclusions, with grades ranging from Flawless to Included. This is assessed by a trained grader using 10x magnification and considers the number and type of inclusions and how large and how visible they are. Below Internally Flawless each grade is further separated into numbered subgrades for greater differentiation. (You can find more detail about clarity grades on our website: https://www.pajewellery.com/blogs/pajewellery/choosing-your-diamond-clarity)
A
even if the grade is the same. For instance, pictured below are two diamonds that seem identical on paper (same weight, colour, cut etc.) but with a significant price difference; both were certificated by the GIA and graded as SI1. The difference? In stone one the inclusions are white and towards the edge while in stone two there is a dark inclusion right in the centre. The latter appears good value on paper, but it is likely that this inclusion will be visible to the naked eye (remember these images are massively magnified!), so the first stone is probably worth paying a bit extra for. The difference in price between grades is significant but once a diamond is ‘eye clean’ (having no inclusions that are visible to the naked eye) there is little visible change between, for instance, a VVS1 and a VS2 without the aid of
magnification. Here an independent diamond grading report is crucial, so you know you are getting what you are paying for! Recently, heavily included diamonds have also become very popular in unusual shapes and settings to offer a completely different look to the traditional sparkling stone. In these stones the inclusions become a feature and add colour. If you need more information about clarity our qualified gemmologists and diamond graders are always on hand to answer your questions and help you choose the diamond that is right for you. Every diamond is different, and each grade covers a wide range of possibilities, so it is important to see the diamond in person as the specific characteristics of stones can make a significant difference to the overall appearance (and price) www.rmcmedia.co.uk 69

EATING OUT
Changes afoot THERE’S A NEW OWNER AT THE WORTLEY ARMS – AND HE’S DARING TO BE DIFFERENT, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. n many ways the Wortley Arms remains comfortingly familiar. This former coach house, which dates back to 1753 and reopened as a pub in 2006, still has the trappings of a classically old fashioned ale house complete with a huge fireplace, dark wood panels and solid stone walls. But scratch below the surface and it’s clear that new owner Jamie Ellis, who began working at the Wortley Arms 11 years ago and learned all aspects of the business before taking over from his predecessor Andy Gabbitas, is making his own mark on one of Sheffield’s landmark dining pubs. A few subtle changes – some tasteful glass artefacts and ‘proper’ wine glasses that are definitely more restaurant than pub – are most welcome. And with summer on the way there’s a new outdoor seating area. Meanwhile the menu retains the Wortley Arms’ traditional strength with a winning mixture of comfort food classics and high-end cuisine. My friend Glynn and I popped in for a late tea and found the restaurant comfortably busy for a Monday evening. With good beers from the local Stancil and Bradfield Breweries to help us settle in we could easily have played safe and gone for the fish and chips or the burger… both of which looked fabulous
I
as they were carried past us towards nearby tables. But any regrets were banished as we sampled the ‘cheffy’ end of the menu and were rewarded with a fabulous combination of tastes and textures. For starters my goat’s cheese tart fine (£7.95) was a deconstructed affair, a roll of smoothly whipped, light and tangy goat’s cheese on a biscuit base, served with wild garlic, red onion marmalade and beetroot. Glynn’s tortellini of wild mushrooms with cep broth (£7.95) was another winner; the mushrooms chopped fine, the pasta slightly al dente, the broth earthy. The fresh baked warm bread with chewy, salty crust was also top notch. For mains I was sorely tempted by the sheer originality of creole spiced spatchcock poussin with sweet potato wedges, salad, chimichurri dressing and sour cream… not a dish you see every day. But in the end pan fried halibut fillet (£20), always one of my favourites, won the vote. The Wortley Arms version was cooked perfectly, with crispy skin and moist flesh. Served with braised rice, curried mussel sauce and chargrilled mango, it was another inventive mix of ingredients that worked perfectly. Glynn’s duo of Moss Valley pork (£16.95) was equally impressive and inventive, choice cuts of tenderloin and
belly dished up with fondant potato, sultana and apple purée, pickled pear and a peanut and panko crumble. “Unusual, but it all works,” was Glynn’s verdict. There’s also an excellent wine list to complement those swanky new glasses and glasses of Southern Lights Sauvignon Blanc (£5.30) and Willowglen Shiraz Cabernet (£4.90) helped everything along nicely. Our evening ended with three outstanding desserts. A bit greedy between two people, you say? Fair enough, guilty as charged. But I can report that the lemon posset with berry coulis, treacle tart with vanilla ice cream and tiramisu cheesecake with tonka bean ice cream (all £6.50) were all top notch. With good strong espressos (£2.20) to round things off this was a splendid, inventive meal in a warm, friendly venue that has definitely got a new lease of life. Laugh it up TRAMLINES HAS ANNOUNCED ITS COMEDY LINE-UP FOR 2019. hile the music will always take centre stage at Tramlines, and why wouldn’t it when you’ve got the likes of Chic & Nile Rogers, The Courteeners and Manic Street Preachers? But last year’s inaugural comedy line-up, hosted by the Leadmill, proved to be a huge draw. So Tramlines has decided to do it again. Topping the bill on Saturday night (20 July) is Reginald D Hunter. The Georgia-born comic is currently celebrating 20 years as a comedian living and performing in the UK with a huge 40-date national tour where, in his southern drawl, he’ll have audiences keeling over with his distinctive take on race, sexuality and politics. You’ll probably recognise Reginald from TV appearances on Have I Got News For You and the BBC2 series documenting the growth of American popular song, Reginald D Hunter’s Songs of the South and its follow up, Songs of the Border. Headlining on Sunday is stand-up comedian, actor and performance poet, Phill Jupitus. The former team captain of Never Mind the Buzzcocks has a careerlong connection with the music industry. Council and The Housemartins, directing the Brit Awards-nominated video for Bragg’s Sexuality in 1991, to DJing numerous times as Glastonbury, Jupitus is the perfect fit for Tramlines. Next comes Shappi Khorsandi, who established a name for herself in 2006 with a sell-out Edinburgh show, Asylum Speaker, and has since gone on to appear on countless TV and radion shows including Mock The Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats amongst others. The remaining line-up features a mix of in-demand and conquering comedians. These include the situation comic and all-round entertainer Andre Vincent whose 30-year career cites writing credits for Channel 4’s The 11 O’clock Show and co-creating The Late Edition. He is joined by fellow Brit Alistair Barrie, a regular at London’s world-famous Comedy Store and a core member of their weekly topical Cutting Edge team. The laughs continue to roll with the Australian born/UK-based, Thomas Green, who’ll deliver his engagingstorytelling style of comedy, which combined with his quick-witted exchanges and improv, means audience members at Tramlines should think twice
about heckling! Also flying the Aussie flag is Daniel Muggleton who’ll bring to the proceedings his ‘hilarious’ observations as reviewed at the Edinburgh Festival. Tramlines Festival is also announcing another batch of new talent for the 2019 line-up. The latest additions include; Brighton four-piece, Yonaka, and postgrime pop singer, Georgia, both who’ve received high accolades from The Guardian as ‘One To Watch’; West Yorkshire’s Skinny Living who have supported Jake Bugg; Irish rock band, Otherkin, and indie band Cassia whose talents were affirmed with a Radio 1 BBC Introducing Track of the Week for their 2017 single, ‘100 Times Over’. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money.Weekend tickets have sold quicker than ever and are now on fifth tier and priced from £75.50 plus booking fee for all three days.VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. Under 12s go for free. For full ticketing info including monthly payment plans, visit www.tramlines.org.uk.

Little miracles WITH THE ADDITION OF A NEW SERVICE, JESSOP FERTILITY LEAD THE WAY IN HELPING COUPLES WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO CONCEIVE.
84 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
PROMOTION
VF (In Vitro Fertilisation) has been helping couples conceive for just over 40 years. During this time, great strides have been made in the field of assisted conception and over six million babies have been born worldwide as a result of these groundbreaking treatments. Leading the way for South Yorkshire is Jessop Fertility, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The Assisted Conception Unit opened in 2001, and over the last 17 years has helped thousands of patients achieve their dream of becoming a family by using the latest treatments and technological advances. The use of the latest technology has led to considerable improvements in the chance of treatment being successful and the latest figures speak for themselves. This year Jessop Fertility have had their best ever results showing that, overall, 48.6 per cent of IVF treatment cycles (in women aged 18-45) will result in a clinical pregnancy. In addition, 51 per cent of patients have embryos suitable for freezing, which can be used at a later date. One of the most important recent developments has been the introduction of the latest state-of-the-art time-lapse incubators. This enables embryos to be placed in an incubator where their development is uninterrupted and can be monitored closely. This allows the scientists to select the embryo that has the best chance of achieving a pregnancy. Whether you are receiving IVF
I
Jonathan Skull is clinical head of the unit and is delighted to report the best ever success rates at Jessop Fertility
Davina Hulme is a senior embryologist and is excited to be bringing the latest technologies to Jessop Fertility
through the NHS or are funding it yourself, all treatments at Jessop Fertility include time-lapse technology, embryo glue and early pregnancy monitoring. As well as IVF, Jessop Fertility offers a full range of fertility treatments, including a comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and treatments involving donor sperm and eggs. The unit is about to launch a PreImplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) service. The PGS service involves the careful removal of a few cells from the outside of an embryo to check that it has the correct number of chromosomes. Davina Hulme is a senior embryologist at Jessop Fertility and has many years’ experience in this technique. She explains: “By ensuring that the embryo has the correct genetic makeup, we can select the embryo with the best chance of becoming a healthy baby. This treatment may benefit some patients who have had repeated unsuccessful treatments, or some older patients and will help improve the already fantastic results at Jessop Fertility.” Jessop Fertility also offers a PreImplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) service for couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic condition. Currently this service is offered as a satellite service alongside Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. With the PGD service, the genetic team work alongside the fertility team in the Jessop Wing. The patients are prepared for treatment in Sheffield and when they are ready for their eggs to be harvested, they travel to Guy’s in London for the egg
collection and for the embryos to be tested. Jonathan Skull, the clinical lead at Jessop Fertility, explains: “We work with Guy’s in a satellite capacity throughout, but our patients still need to travel down to London for some aspect of their treatment. With the development of our embryo biopsy service it means that we will soon be able to offer all the treatment in Sheffield, which will make the whole process quicker and easier for patients, with no need to travel elsewhere.” Although the latest developments are exciting and lead to an improved chance of pregnancy, Jonathan added: “The most important aspect of treatment is that we treat patients with sensitivity and compassion. All our team strive to provide the best possible care and support to our patients through what can be a very stressful and emotionally demanding experience.” If you would like to find out more about any of the treatments or the brand new PGS service coming to Jessop Fertility this autumn, call 0114 226 8501 to speak to a member of the team or send a message via the website at www.jessopfertility.org.uk. Why Debbie is sharing her thoughts on death It’s a subject that many people find difficult to talk about but which all of us will have to face. That’s why Dying Matters, which this year runs its annual awareness week from 13-19 May, has become Death Café organiser Penny one of the most important national platforms for Merrett (left) with Debbie Talbot bringing the subject of death into everyday conversation. But at St Luke’s Hospice, this most sensitive of subjects is one that comes up for regular discussion thanks to a series of death cafes which are open to all and which are held at Clifford House, the St Luke’s facility for people with illnesses that have no cure. Counsellor Debbie Talbot became involved in the death cafes last year and for her they provide a way of discussing something that her own family would never have talked about. “My family never welcomed this sort of discussion so I found it hard to process my thoughts around death and loss,” Debbie admits. “The death cafes give me space to talk about death and, as a counsellor, also help me to be there emotionally for somebody who might be going through loss themselves.” The next death cafes will be held at Clifford House on 17 July and 19 October.
Sam’s wardrobe clear out supports St Luke’s There should be plenty of space for fresh summer fashion trends in Sam Warsop’s wardrobe after she had a Lent clothing clear out in support of St Luke’s Hospice. To mark the 40 days of the period leading up to Easter, the publishing manager at RMC Media went through her cupboards and chose 40 outfits to donate to the award winning chain of St Luke’s shops. “It’s something I started doing a few years ago and now it’s simply become a way of life and something that I really look forward to,” said Sam. “It’s such an easy thing to do and it’s really refreshing to be able to de-clutter your wardrobe and give to a great cause at the same time.” Donations can be left at any of the St Luke’s shops any day during normal opening hours.
