Safe, stylish and durable

TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR SURFACES WITH ROMAN ROAD SYSTEMS’ RESIN BOUND FINISHES.

zirst impressions are everything, especially when it comes to your home. And this extends beyond your front door to your paths, patios and driveways. If they’re cracked, broken or full of weeds, it’s time to do something about it.

This is where Roman Road Systems Ltd come in. The family-run business with over 25 years’ experience can breathe new life into tired pathways, drives and patios.

They are expert installers of resin bound decorative surfaces which can transform hard-standing areas by creating a safe, durable and attractive surface in many different finishes and colours.

Resin bound surfaces, which can add colour and character to your outdoor spaces, are created by mixing aggregate material with a suitable resin compound which is then laid on the prepared surface min 16mm in depth to provide a smooth and aesthetically-pleasing surface.

They are most suitable for non-slip areas as the finish is not abrasive. Resin bound systems minimise puddles, ice and growth of mould and weeds and are easy to maintain; they simply need a jet wash or hose down, then swept clean.

Managing director Rob Barnett established the Eckington-based company over 15 years ago after having previously worked in the bridge and road construction industries, which included the installation of anti-skid surfaces.

Rob works with his daughter Shani,

who is office manager, as well as Ryan Walsh who is site manager. And don’t forget to look out for the friendly works dog – Roman the German Shepherd.

“Our team have good knowledge in the fields they’re working in and, more than anything else, they have great pride and a sense of achievement in what they are doing,” Rob said. “Along with this, we only use the very best materials and products on all our jobs. This may sometimes make us not the cheapest around, but we certainly guarantee all our work will last with no worries.

“We are very proud of delivering above and beyond our customers’ expectations at a price that is absolute value for money.”

The team can help with design and build from scratch, including ramps and steps. Over the years, Roman Road Systems have also broadened their offering and can now provide full landscaping services, including fencing, gates, turf and artificial grass, as well as flat roofs, fascias, rendering, and other general building maintenance.

If you fancy something completely different, logos can be incorporated into any design. You can see examples of the different styles and colours available at their Eckington show site.

Roman Road Systems’ surfaces are long-lasting, don’t fade or discolour with time. All work is fully insured and comes with a full ten-year guarantee.

Finance is available on all installations and Roman Road Systems currently have an autumn sale where they are offering 25 per cent off.

Please make an appointment to visit the outdoor display area at the depot, which is highly recommended.

The Beadle of the Company of Cutlers on the stairs of the Cutlers’ Hall

Forged in history

The Company of Cutlers, which celebrates its 400-year anniversary next year, has helped to shape Sheffield’s past – and continues to shape its present and future. We spoke to incoming Master Cutler Charles Turner to find out more.

www.rmcmedia.co.uk 15

e honest, how many times have you walked past the steel doors of the Cutlers’ Hall in the city centre and wondered what’s inside? Despite standing on the same site since 1638, the striking building still remains a mystery to many Sheffielders.

But there’s no great secret, in fact outside of the many functions and events the hall holds, the public are encouraged to step inside and marvel at its grandeur as well as its extensive collection of cutlery, silver and grand paintings.

The Cutlers’ Hall was built by the Company of Cutlers, which celebrates its 400-year anniversary on 23 April next year, and serves as an example as to what has been achieved and what can still be achieved in the manufacturing industry.

The first Hall was built in 1638, with two later halls were built on the same site. The accounts show that the Company bought the land for the first hall for £69.12s.

This first hall was demolished in May 1725 and the site cleared for the building of the second hall. However, by 1827, the state of this second hall was causing a great deal of public concern. A letter appeared in the Sheffield Independent: “Its exterior appearance is unworthy of the Company to whom it belongs”. In 1832, following the demolition of the second Hall, the present Cutlers’ Hall, the third on this site, was built. It was designed by two architects, Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor, who had both submitted plans, but when the Company was unable to choose between these plans, the two architects agreed to work together. The building cost the Company

£8,846.12s.1d, with a further £1,092.3s.2d spent on furnishings.

In 1867, the Hall was extended to the rear, with the addition of the New Banqueting Hall on the first floor with the Hadfield Hall beneath and in 1888, the frontage was extended westward.

It is a Grade 2* Listed building, privately owned by the Company of Cutlers, and is considered to be one of the finest Livery halls in the country.

Inside the hall you’ll find extensive archives, which record the internal administration of the Company. But as the Company was so closely linked to the development of Sheffield and its core industries, these can also shed light on both local and family histories.

Perhaps more appealing to the passing public is the Hall’s silver collection, which features at least one piece of Sheffield hallmarked silver for every year since 1773, the year the Sheffield Assay Office was founded.

Much of the historical items were gifted to the Company by Stuart Goodwin (later Sir Stuart). He purchased a collection that had been assembled by Thomas Bradbury and featured some 500 pieces dating from 1773 to 1840. It wasn’t until 1999 that the run of silver, 1840-1944 was finally completed.

Alongside the silver collection sits the cutlery collection. Cutlery, in Sheffield manufacturing terms, means ‘things that cut’. This includes, knives, scissors, shears, edge tools, and so forth and the Company has a varied collection of knives, scissors and razors. Many of the knives have been given to the Company and survive from the 19th century, mainly because they are impressive with large blades and decorative handles.

Typical of these are the ‘Bowie knives’. Around 1914, Harry Brearley was a Sheffield metallurgist, endeavouring to produce a usable stainless steel for table knife blades. A framed group of knives, which shows his early experimental blades, was presented to the Company in 1936 by Harry Brearley.

In the 1990s, the Company received a collection of over 1,400 open razors, commonly called ‘cut-throat’ razors. These show a wide range of styles and materials, from the everyday razors to highly decorative items, which might have gilded blades and carved ivory handles.

The Company’s collection of paintings are mainly portraits of Masters Cutler and of men associated with Sheffield’s history.

Manufacturing has been vital to the development of Sheffield over the centuries and still plays an important role today.

“It’s what makes Sheffield, Sheffield,” said Charles Turner, who becomes Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers on 3 October. “If you consider we sit here [in the Cutlers’ Hall] and less than 500m away there’s a factory selling high quality knives all over the world, most people wouldn’t believe that in a city centre these days.

“And then consider that Forgemasters is a mile-and-a-half in that direction and Swann Morton is a mile-and-a-half the other way… the city centre is ringed by factories. We are a manufacturing city and we sometimes forget that.”

The Company of Cutlers was established by a Parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624, countersigned by King James I, and essentially exists to

maintain the standards and quality of Sheffield-made cutlery and steel products and to promote the name of ‘Sheffield’ on the world stage.

The Master Cutler is vital to this latter role and will spend much of his 365 days in office promoting Sheffield regionally, nationally and internationally. Charles joins a long unbroken line that can be traced right back to the first Master Cutler in 1624, which was a certain Robert Sorsby. Charles also follows in his father Neil’s footsteps, who held the position in 2003.

Charles is the managing director of Durham-Duplex, which has been manufacturing in the city since 1910. The Petre Street company has moved, over the years, from producing safety razor blades used for shaving to machine knives and industrial blades and has subsidiaries in Europe, the US and South-East Asia.

“All Masters are manufacturers, which brings a depth of knowledge and credibility,” commented Charles. “When people ask what’s happening in Sheffield, we know that three of the four electric arc furnaces in the UK are in this region and what steels they make. We know the capabilities of various companies and, for example, we know how well the forging industry is doing… I could go on and on...”

There are some 360 members, called Freemen, of the Company of Cutlers, all of whom qualified on joining by being a director or senior executive of a manufacturing organisation or work in the field of research in support of, manufactured items. This provides a network of people involved in manufacturing who can share ideas and opportunities.

“They’re all experts in their fields and know what they’re talking about,” added Charles. “In my view there’s no-one better placed to promote Sheffield manufacturing to the world than the actual manufacturers.”

Sheffield has long been synonymous with quality and therefore subject to the attention of counterfeiters. This protection is still required and the Company is periodically engaged in actions to prevent abusive use of the name Sheffield.

Although the Trade Marks Act of 1994 closed down the Sheffield Register, the Cutlers’ Company still controls the ‘Sheffield’ Certification Mark (CM). The name Sheffield is protected and the Cutlers’ Company acts on behalf of the Secretary of State for Business in the approval of the use of the word ‘Sheffield’ in any business name or title.

In practical terms, this means that anyone wishing to use the name Sheffield when registering a Company has therefore to seek a letter of nonobjection from us before it can be registered at Companies House.

The ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark was launched in 2005 and now has more than 400 licence holders. It is in demand as a sign of quality which adds value to products as a point of Origin. The brand is co-owned by the Company of Cutlers, the Sheffield City Council and the Chamber of Commerce.

Part of the way the Company ensure the continuous quality is through education. The ‘Better Learners, Better Workers’ programme started in 2010 and was developed to provide young people with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to be successful in the world of work. At present, the

programme is working with ten pupils at each of 14 schools across the region.

“We can make anything, and make it as well as before, in this city,” added Charles. “But one of the problems going forward will be skills. We do need to work hard to make young people aware of manufacturing and engineering as a career. Schools do not teach the broad spectrum of technical skills that we need so it’s our job to raise awareness of manufacturing in schools so we can then develop the talents of trainees, apprentices and graduates in the workplace.”

The programme goes a long way to redressing this balance and will hopefully start to provide the manufacturers of the future.

Charles’s main remit as Master Cutler will be to deliver the 400-year anniversary and plans are still being finalised for the celebration next year. It’s a remarkable achievement for a Company that seems to go quietly about its business, at least in the eyes of the general public. But in manufacturing terms, they’re a big-hitter and proud to be promoting Sheffield to the world.

“If I could have one final word,” said Charles. “It would be, ‘Tell the world, it’s Made in Sheffield.”

Hear! Hear!

So next time you walk past the Cutlers’ Hall, you’re walking past 400 years of history, a history that has so often been the key to the city’s future.

Hotspot for independent business

HILLSBOROUGH’S MIDDLEWOOD ROAD IS NEWLY IMPROVED AND FULL OF HIDDEN GEMS FOR YOU TO TRY WHETHER YOU’RE AFTER GREAT FOOD, PUBS, SHOPS OR ACTIVITIES IN THE PARK. BY MOLLY ROWE-TOWLE.

Located just under three miles north-west of the city centre and adjacent to the vast greenery of Hillsborough Park, Middlewood Road is full of shops, cafes, restaurants and even an art gallery.

The bustling road has great transport links to the city via the Supertram, but residents don’t need to travel far as the charming road has all you could need. What’s more, despite being a newly sought-after area the average property last year was £205,286 remaining lower than the city’s average.

What is there?

Middlewood Road and Langsett Road are home to numerous amenities, including a nursery, a Methodist Church, dentists, a doctor’s surgery, opticians, cafes, a shopping centre with supermarkets on site, hair and beauty salons, a pharmacy, a park, and excellent transport links including Hillsborough Park tram stop.

There are schools located nearby with excellent reviews and it is not far from

the Northern General Hospital, making it a perfect location for families.

Things to do:

Hillsborough Park

Alongside Middlewood Road runs Hillsborough Park, a large green park that is also the home of the infamous Tramlines Festival. Within the park there is the new Hillsborough Pump track, which is a free to use bike track. Visitors can hire bikes and helmets for free so even if you don’t have a bike you can get involved.

Also located in Hillsborough Park is the Depot Bakery where you can get a range of brunch classics as well as more unique options such as the salt beef and swiss bagel or a sweet potato reuben.

Art

Middlewood Road surprisingly has a great selection of great locally run art galleries. One standout is the Cupola Gallery, a stylish contemporary gallery on Middlewood road offering a broad range of artwork for a range of budgets and tastes. The gallery displays the work

of over 300 artists including paintings, jewellery, ceramics, glass, prints, sculptures, photography and textiles. Alternatively, there is the contemporary family-run Curo Gallery. This gallery offers unique artwork and gifts, picture framing and a flower preservation service.

Hillsborough Stadium

The home of Sheffield Wednesday is just a short walk from Middlewood Roadyou’ll see thousands of converging on the stadium on matchdays. Fortunes are not looking so good at the time of writing with the Owls struggling at the bottom end of the Championship.

Owlerton Stadium

Just a five-minute drive, or a 20-minute walk away is the Owlerton Stadium; Sheffield’s premier racetrack, home to greyhound, speedway and stock car racing. This makes a fun and great day out for families and friends. Overlooking the racetrack is the ‘Panorama’ bar and restaurant which offers a large, seasonal menu which has great reviews.

Cupola Gallery

Established in 1991 Cupola remains one of the most respected contemporary galleries for the sale and exhibition of fine art and fine craft in the north of England.

Owner Karen Sherwood famously opened between a betting shop and a launderette around the corner from the Sheffield Wednesday football ground. It aimed to fill what Karen saw as a huge need for an exhibition and sales venue for the many contemporary artists that lived and worked across the city.

Karen works alongside Graham Shapley, who has been there for 13 years, as well as picture framers Pete and Midge. Everyone is welcome to pop into the gallery and browse, especially children.

Curo Gallery

Curo Gallery is still a family-run small business offering bespoke framing, artwork from in house and local artists and flower preservation. Owners Bev and Dez look forward to welcoming you.

The Middlewood Road gallery is privileged to display photos and memorabilia from this year’s ‘Bangers and Cash’.

In September, 21 teams embarked on a banger rally from Sheffield to Munich, raising funds for Roundabout, a local youth homelessness charity.

Bangers and Cash is made even more exciting as each car bonnet is transformed by talented artists, along with 40 road signs, creating unique artwork.

Curo Gallery is showcasing selections in the Bangers and Cash Art Trail, highlighting creative talent and the positive impact of art on lives, in our community and beyond.

RivelinCo

Hillsborough-based arts and community organisation

RivelinCo are delighted to have finally found a shop front base after a challenging yearlong search.

The Potato & Pie Shop

The Potato & Pie Shop opened on Middlewood Road in November and serves different varieties of pies as well as jacket potatoes, both of which can be eaten in or taken away. The pies are cooked fresh each day using ingredients bought from local suppliers, including Wragg’s and Eve’s fruit and veg.

The Potato & Pie Shop is the brainchild of Lynsey Kirkham and business partner Gavin Chambers. They first trialled the idea with a mobile catering van, which she launched at Kelham Island in April. Such was its success that she switched her attention to finding permanent premises and after a short period in Chapeltown, she came across their current premises on Middlewood Road.

The shop is open Monday to Saturday 11-4pm and Lynsey has partnered with Just Eat, CityGrab and Deliveroo to fulfil takeaway orders.

Call 0114 350 3639 or find them on social media Facebook: thepotatoandpieshop Instagram: thepotatoandpieshop

The old ‘All Sorts’ shop at 339 Middlewood Road was once an antiques centre, over a decade ago, but since then has sat empty. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, RivelinCo are transforming the shop into a multi-use space for the community, as well as a small office base for the RivelinCo team to carry out their creative community work.

The move coincides with the good news that RivelinCo have secured a £50,000 Creative Catalyst grant from Innovate UK to set up a ‘Borrow Shop’ for artists and cultural organisations across South Yorkshire. Over the next six months they will be developing the infrastructure for a new low-cost equipment lending scheme.

Dance Dynamique has a new home

ne of Sheffield’s leading dance schools has a new Hillsborough home.

Dance Dynamique Academy (DDA) opened in March 2011 but has now moved into new premises at the top of Hawksley Avenue, opposite Hillsborough Park and Hillsborough Arena. It offers over 60 classes, six days a week, and is open to anyone, from toddlers right up to adults of any age. So if you’ve always fancied trying your hand at ballet, tap, street, musical theatre or contemporary modern jazz dancing, now is the time to sign up.

The recently-refurbished premises has two studios as well as a comfortable waiting area and its own dance shop.

Owner Fiona Firth had always dreamed of owning her own school and becoming an IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) examiner. After finishing her professional training at Phil Whinston’s Theatre works in Blackpool she ploughed herself into her teacher training exams before opening her own school at 24 years old.

After hosting classes throughout the north Sheffield area, Fiona is happy to have found a permanent home.

“I started with just six classes and 42

students; we now offer 60 classes with around 350 people,” said Fiona, who is a Fellow of the Modern Jazz faculty.

“Throughout the last 12 years we have trained students into teachers, have 100 per cent pass rate in exams, created some incredible shows and have watched our students blossom into incredible young people. It’s so exciting to have moved into our very own studios!”

Three former students have now joined Fiona as qualified dance teachers. Miss Morgan trained at DDA since 2011 and received wonderful marks for her majors exams as well as receiving a distinction for her first teaching exam. Miss Maddie has trained since the age of 14, has a passion for tap and gained fantastic marks for her IDTA exams. Miss Hannah has been with DDA since the age of 10 and is a beautiful ballerina. She received an incredible 92 per cent for her Intermediate Ballet exam and a distinction for her first teaching exam.

As well as hosting her own dance classes, Fiona allows the studios to be used by other groups too, and include Cat on the Mat Yoga, Hummingbird Music Group and Sarah Haynes Yoga.

Coming up at half term will be a

‘Spooky Camp’, which runs from 23-25 October, and a Halloween party on 28 October.

“We’re very much family oriented and get everyone involved, we’re very inclusive,” said Fiona. “We provide a high standard of dance training in a loving and supportive environment. We take exams through the IDTA several times a year and offer performance opportunities at local community events, full school productions and showcases. “The new premises are easily accessible on foot or by public transport and there’s pay-and-display parking opposite.”

If you’re inspired to dance, Dance Dynamique Academy is the perfect place to indulge your passion.

IT HAS BEEN FIVE YEARS SINCE PA JEWELLERY BECAME AN EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP TRUST. HERE, THE STAFF REFLECT ON THE CHANGE AND HOW

When Mike Marsh sadly passed away in February 2018, he had already sowed the seeds for succession to ensure that PA Jewellery would prosper for years to come. These future plans were centred around a move into becoming an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) and this month marks five years since this change came into effect.

Mike started PA Jewellery in 1976, was a family man at heart and instilled and encouraged these family values at the jewellers, which remain today.

Current directors Ian Cookson, Suzanne Thompson and Amy CampbellJones, alongside Mike’s wife Pam and daughter Susan who serve as nonexecutive directors, have maintained these values which have seen the business thrive over the last 47 years.

An Employee Ownership Trust enables all staff to have a share in the business and of course a vested interest in seeing it succeed. It’s a model that seems well suited to such a close-knit business and Ian Cookson has been delighted with how the last five years have progressed.

“I wouldn’t say the EOT has changed things too much, mainly because of the culture Mike had instilled before, our core values still remain,” he said. “We’ve always been open and staff have had a high level of involvement and, if anything, the EOT has only enhanced that.”

There’s lots of familiar faces at PA Jewellery and the long-serving team has been complemented by a new generation in recent years, who have brought their own ideas and enthusiasm to the trust.

New staff members are eligible to join the EOT after working at PA Jewellery for 12 months.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, PA Jewellery responded positively and, thanks to continued support from its loyal customers, have flourished in the successive years.

“When the pandemic happened, everyone shouldered the responsibility and worked together and we did really well,” said workshop manager Deborah Rootham, who has been with the family business for 27 years.

“I think the EOT has been a positive thing, it’s pulled us all together. We’re all much more involved and it feels like we have more input.”

PA Jewellery always adapted to shifting trends and customer patterns which, at

PROMOTION
IT HAS AFFECTED THE JEWELLERY BUSINESS.
42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

present, is seeing them do much more bespoke work. As a business they have embraced new technology and now have a full-time CAD designer, Issy Starkiss, to complement their existing workshop, which means they can combine modern techniques with traditional skills.

Suzanne Thompson sees the quirkiness of PA, famously appointed at The Old Bank in Commonside, as one of its strengths.

“PA is a little off the beaten track, it is a destination and once customers are here they find it’s not what they have come to expect from a high street jewellers,” she said. “The staff are much more involved, you get people coming in asking for specific members of staff because they’ve built up that relationship.”

The genesis of PA Jewellery began when Mike visited an acquaintance, Ron Carr, at his Sheffield based workshop in 1976, who’s name later became synonymous with quality silverware. At the time, Ron was manufacturing silver ingots with enlarged hallmarks and Mike thought he may be able to sell these via an advert in a popular Sunday paper.

In 1976, PA Jewellery sold less than 100! However, what Mike hadn’t

anticipated was that 1977 was the Queens Sliver Jubilee and for that year only there was a special silver hallmark. The ingots became collector's items and they ended up selling thousands. Mike’s attic became a jewellery workshop as he cut lengths of chain, fixed clasps to each end, slid the ingots on and packed them carefully in small Union Jack boxes. It soon became obvious he could no longer continue working out of the attic and Mike made the huge decision in 1978 to purchase the Old Bank, Commonside. A combination of Mike’s ability to take risks and the Queen reaching her Silver Jubilee led to the well respected business that is PA Jewellery.

Whilst current staff members appear to be thriving under the EOT, one person is particularly proud of the path the business is taking.

“Mike put his whole life into PA Jewellery and he never lorded it over his staff. They were his equals and colleagues and he wanted to bring out the best in them,” said Pam Marsh.

“In fact he thought the world of them, and they felt the same about him. The EOT is exactly what he wanted and he would be so proud and happy to see this.

“The staff are now majority shareholders and each one of those staff are jewellers, not shop assistants; they are all specialists in their own right.”

The Employee Ownership Trust is not a model suited to every business but appears to be one well-suited to PA Jewellery and its 24 staff members. They are very much a ‘family’, which is evident as soon as you step through the doors.

Mike Marsh would be proud too.

With medical bills piling up, Argan believes he has found the perfect solution to his problem. But with an exasperated household growing tired of his antics, Argan’s time may be better spent addressing what is real, rather than worrying about what is imagined.

A witty satire punctuated with music and dance, this adaptation of Molière’s masterpiece proves that laughter really is the best form of medicine.

Grenoside and Birley Carr Players looking forward to Christmas!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…especially for members of Grenoside and Birley Carr Players!

For even though most of the country is still in summer holiday mode, the popular community theatre company are well into rehearsals for their forthcoming production of Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, which comes to Grenoside Community Centre this October.

In the celebrated tale of ghostly encounters and Festive redemption, Mark Winton plays cold hearted Victorian businessman Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who doesn’t just dislike Christmas…he hates it!

But on one very special Christmas Eve, the seventh anniversary of the death of his equally mean-spirited partner Jacob Marley, three spectral visitors take Ebenezer on a journey through his past, present and future and teach him to embrace once more the season of goodwill.

Charles Dickens’ timeless fantasy comes to fresh life in a new adaptation by Michael Marrone which takes to the stage at Grenoside Community Centre from October 18 to 20 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee on October 21 at 2.30pm.

For tickets call 07971 264322.

AMICO team take the Bangers and Cash prize!

It might not be the Wacky Races but it’s just as crazy and colourful…and it’s already raised £80,000 for South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout.

Bangers and Cash, the unique car rally that combines a road trip with an art exhibition, set off from Meadowhall for Munich last month. Four days later, all 21 cars had successfully completed the challenge, with the team from Advanced Metal Innovation Company taking first place, with OSL Group coming in second and Evoluted third.

All the vehicles had specially decorated bonnets designed by a host of acclaimed artists. These will be displayed at sites throughout the city from 14-29 October and make a final appearance at a special charity auction dinner at the Victoria Crowne Plaza on Friday 3 November.

The costumes and the drama

From its servants’ quarters to its grand Marble Saloon where Royalty were entertained, Wentworth Woodhouse has stepped back in time to ‘star’ in many a period drama.

Rotherham’s Grade I listed Georgian stately home has become a popular location for TV and film companies.

Trucks, trailers and vans frequently line the front lawn as sets are created.

Hundreds of crew members descend, thousands of pieces of kit line the hallways and miles of cables run throughout the house and then the stars of stage and scene arrive for their scenes.

But it’s when the actors step into their costumes that the real magic begins.

Painstakingly made for historical accuracy, whether it’s for an Edwardian ball or a lowly Victorian backstreet, the outfits transport the house back to bygone days.

Now visitors are getting a chance to see up-close a collection of 24 costumes worn in productions at Wentworth Woodhouse.

On Location, the Preservation Trust’s latest exhibition, runs until 5 November and is free to view with house and garden admission tickets.

For further details and to book tickets, visit: https://wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk/whats-on/on-locationcostume-exhibition/

Relieving stress on the big day

TEN

1. Create a self-care routine

Before your wedding, it is useful to develop a few techniques to help you relax and relieve stress. This can be completely tailored to suit your own preferences and may require a few experiments to figure out what you enjoy. A few ideas could be a spa day (at a spa or at home), going for a run or walk, or dipping into a lake for a cold water swim.

2. Make as many lists as you need

If you find yourself up late at night worrying about all the tasks you need to do - don’t wait until the morning to write them down. Getting everything onto paper as soon as it enters your mind is crucial as it stops that nagging feeling. Invest in a good planner and bullet journal to have a designated wedding planning tool.

3. Feel grounded and present with mindfulness and meditation

A myriad of useful mindfulness and meditation tutorials await you on TikTok and YouTube. The power of mindfulness and breathing exercises cannot be underestimated, they are extremely beneficial techniques for clearing your mind and focusing on what is important.

5. Prioritise, prioritise, prioritise

To help keep things in perspective, prioritize the essentials—those things that are super important to make this your dream wedding. Then refer to your “must” list over and over during the planning process, so you don’t go down a spiral of DIY projects you saw on Pinterest or feel the need to constantly upgrade your flower arrangements. Repeatedly checking in with your initial goals will help you stay on track—and on budget.

7. Go on a Date

With your fiance… obviously. Many couples say that the stress of wedding planning can put a strain on their relationship. To combat this, give yourself private time to reconnect and remind yourself of what it’s all about. The way to ensure a stress-free date is to ban the dreaded W word to avoid it turning into another wedding planning session.

8. Don’t Invite Her

When it comes to wedding dress shopping, many brides fear the judgment of some of their closest friends or even their mothers. You only need a little bit of support from people who will back your final decision despite their own fashion tastes and it’s completely up to you who gets to be there. Dress shopping should be fun and stress-free, the wedding day is much more important.

9. Choose the best Maid of Honour

6. Create a Plan B

4.

Remind

yourself of your priorities

As a bride, it is easy to confuse your role and end up feeling like an overworked party planner. You need to make sure your day is everything YOU want it to be instead of stressing about the expectations of others. Those you invite are freeloading off your generosity, there is no need to over-spend or over-indulge on the socalled perfect wedding and focus on the core memories that really matter.

Create a list of all the potential disaster scenarios that could happen on the wedding day. These could be a change in weather, the dress not fitting, or a fight in the family. Write down anything that could happen and then provide a counterpoint and alternative option to each imaginary scenario. Having a plan B is essential and you will always be able to overcome and adapt to surprise situations.

Maid of Honour duties start from the moment they accept the role. Choose someone who you believe will relieve your stress, be there for you and makes the best out of every situation. She (or he) needs to have positive energy and the confidence to challenge anyone who is causing a problem.

10. Prepare a Wedding Survival Kit

Bring along a pack of bridal essentials like Paracetamol, plasters, hair ties, safety pins, deodorant, mints and other lastminute mini-emergency items that are frequently needed. These can be kept in the Maid of Honour’s bag or by the bathroom sinks.

Sandie, owner at Pink, is very proud to have the perfect staff who offer personal, friendly service and advice when choosing any outfit and not forgetting our expert seamstress, Pat, to ensure the perfect fit.

Sandie has almost 50 years’ experience in the fashion industry and has been self-employed for almost 25 of them.

“Fashion has always been my passion,” she said. “I started off in Rotherham market aged 14. I remember my first day, turning up and asking stall-holders if they needed a Saturday girl. One lady said her girl hadn’t shown up that day and said I could help… I was with her two years!

“I got my first proper job the day after I left school at 16 as a sales assistant at Hilary Weave Fashions/The Bridal Suite Mexborough where I learned my trade and thank them for the great opportunity working with beautiful clothes and wedding gowns.”

Oh what a night!

Pink Boutique recently had the honour of taking part in a charity fashion show along with three other boutiques at Wentworth Woodhouse in support of the Master Cutler’s Challenge to raise £4,000 for community enriching projects. Win a diamond and gold pendant worth £1,000

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of PA Jewellery becoming employee-owned, we have a beautiful laboratory-grown diamond pendant to give away to a lucky reader of Sixer, worth £1,000.

The 9ct yellow gold pendant is set with a 0.75ct round brilliant cut laboratorygrown diamond and is supplied with an independent grading report for the stone so you can feel confident in its quality.

One of the advantages of choosing a laboratory-grown diamond is the opportunity it affords to select a fine grade stone, showcasing the beauty and brilliance that the gem has to offer. The diamond in the winner’s pendant has been graded as D colour and VS1 clarity: completely colourless (there is no higher grade for colour than D) and with only tiny inclusions visible solely under magnification. With Excellent Cut, Polish and Symmetry too, you can be sure that

this stone will sparkle and delight for many years to come.

To be in with a chance of winning this incredible prize, you simply need to fill out the entry form and bring it into our Old Bank showroom or scan the QR code and fill in your details online. The lucky winner will be drawn at random and contacted by PA Jewellery to receive their prize. Closing date for entries: 31 October 2023.

IS PRESCHOOL BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT?

LIA DESAI LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY YEARS CARE AND EDUCATION.

Dropping your little one off at nursery for the first time might seem like a daunting experience. Many parents wonder if investing in a quality preschool is even worth it. Would it be better to stay at home with your child during these formative years?

Developing social skills:

Firstly, the structured setting of preschool is an opportunity for children to learn how to follow instructions and develop socially. Raising their hands, taking turns and sharing will help them become more thoughtful individuals.

They are taught to respect others, solve problems and comprise with their peers. They grow emotionally too – by playing with other children and gaining

confidence, they achieve a sense of selfworth and learn to take care of themselves and others.

Preparing them for academic education:

As well as social growth, nurseries provide a foundation for academic learning. From their ABCs to their 123s, children are prepared for the demands of school by practising pre-maths and literacy skills through a variety of activities. While they’re building toys and playing shopkeepers, they’re actually acquiring transferrable life skills.

Furthermore, preschool is an opportunity for children to explore, converse and find answers to their endless array of questions. They can

speak to their teachers and develop relationships with their peers. This promotes language and cognitive skills.

Future prospects:

Studies have found that “at-risk” children, who don’t receive good nursery education, struggle more in later life. They are 25 per cent more likely to drop out of high school and 60 per cent probably won’t go to college. It also claims that 40 per cent are more likely to become a teen parent and 70 per cent of at-risk children are more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. Scary stuff!

So next time you get emotional about saying goodbye at the school gates just remember, you are giving the little darlings a huge leg-up in life.

Shaped by desire

Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of sporty, elegant dream cars with a new CLE Coupé.

At 4,850 millimetres long, 1,860 millimetres wide and 1,428 millimetres high, the new two-door is the largest coupé in the mid-size segment. With its dimensional concept – in particular the 25-millimetre longer wheelbase – the CLE Coupé offers significantly more space than the C-Class Coupé. The rear passengers in particular benefit from 10 millimetres more headroom, 19 millimetres more shoulder and elbow room and 72 millimetres more knee room. The boot volume offers 60 litres more volume and can easily hold three golf bags.

All engines are mild hybrids with an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system. There is a choice of four-cylinder units and – as the most powerful engine – a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine.

Looking sharp

Škoda has comprehensively updated its compact Škoda Scala and Škoda Kamiq city SUV model series. Both models offer a high level of active and passive safety, courtesy of rigid bodies and a now even more advanced range of assistance systems.

Being based on the same platform, both the Scala and the Kamiq feature efficient, modern TSI engines from the evo2 generation, with power outputs ranging from 70 kW (95hp) to 110 kW (150hp).

With its refined, sharply drawn lines, the Scala looks even more dynamic, while the Kamiq’s design adjustments lend it more rugged SUV appeal. Both models now come with Škoda’s TOP LED Matrix headlights as an option – a first for these models. An increased proportion of recycled and natural materials for the exterior and interior ensures greater sustainability.

THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ COUPE IS A LOOKER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Latest generation

The new Renault Clio E-Tech full hybrid debuts with assertive style and cuttingedge technology, perfectly illustrating the company’s desire to build modern, distinctive and sustainable cars.

Notably, its completely redesigned front end boasts taut lines for an overtly sporty look and features the brand’s new signature lighting that is inspired by the Nouvel’R logo and incorporates slender full-LED headlamps.

Classic hallmarks

It’s a quarter of a century since Volkswagen first added the iconic letters ‘GTI’ to a Polo – and now a new limited-edition version is going on sale to celebrate the milestone.

Just 2,500 Polo GTI Edition 25 models will be available worldwide – including 350 heading to the UK.

All the classic GTI hallmarks are included – red brake calipers and trim strips, a honeycomb design on the radiator grille and chromeplated tailpipes – but the Polo GTI Edition 25 also comes with exclusive anniversary equipment such as 18-inch black gloss Adelaide alloy wheels, a black roof and black exterior mirrors, all of which enhance the car’s sporty appearance.

New Clio E-Tech full hybrid is just as impressive under its sleek new exterior, too. The petrol/electric hybrid produces 145hp for effortless, strong performance and offers a range of up to 550 miles, while also emitting as little as 96g/km CO2 and returning as much as 67.3mpg combined (WLTP). The latest Clio can use the electric motor up to 80 per cent of the time in cities – cutting fuel consumption by up to 40 per cent compared to a conventional petrol engine – with the benefits of near silent running and no need to plug-in to charge the battery.
