appy new year and welcome to our first edition of 2022. I don’t know about you but we’ve got high hopes for this year. We can’t start the new year without mentioning resolutions. If yours are fitness based, we’ve looked as some alternative ways to get fit - aerial yoga anyone? If getting out on two wheels is more your thing we look at some fantastic local bike trails and speak to Calver-based COTIC, whose custommade bikes are hugely popular within the mountain bike community. Their steel frames are not only tough and durable but they look fantastic too. Elsewhere we look at your winter beauty regime, take a short break to the Scottish capital and have your usual mix of fashion, homes and motoring. See you next month.

Lifestyle choice IS A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY FOR YOU? WE SPEAK TO LIFESTYLE VILLAGE TO FIND OUT MORE. ver-65s are predicted to make up almost a quarter of the UK population within 15 years. With so many wishing to downsize from larger homes, the popularity of retirement villages is soaring, more so during the current Covid 19 pandemic, as families have seen their loved ones isolated. A retirement village is a community specially built to cater towards the needs and lifestyles of senior people. During the Covid lockdown period, Lifestyle Village in Old Whittington, Chesterfield, decided to refurbish their residents lounge; confidence to socialise with others is now returning and residents have a very smart lounge to meet, have coffee and just chat. For some people, the lifestyle of a retirement village may not meet their needs. It is important to choose a retirement village that reflects your personal preferences and lifestyle choices. Deciding to move into a retirement village should be considered in the same way you would consider moving to a new house.

O

Benefits of retirement villages Being in a village with like-minded people may suit you well. Having the privacy and independence of a self8 www.sheffieldvibe.com

contained bungalow or flat within a village can give you the freedom of living in your own home while also being in a supportive environment. Lifestyle Village communities have 24hour assistance available through a call system if needed and in an emergency, which may offer peace of mind. Lifestyle Gold Ltd outline in their agreements that all maintenance and repair on properties within the village will be carried out or organised by the village; they seek out the best possible price, which can give you peace of mind about future property issues. Gardening and landscaping will also be maintained by the village. A village may also give you peace of mind about security. Estate Managers have their homes on site, always keeping an eye on things.

Getting good advice before moving in Choosing to move into a retirement village is a big decision that should be carefully considered. You will certainly need the services of a good solicitor to guide you through legal documentation and process. When viewing prospective property, you should meet the Estate Manager and ask questions about general village life. Questions can include: asking about

estate maintenance, communal facilities, buildings insurance, sinking funds etc. Ask as many questions as you need to fully understand what you can expect from the retirement village and living independently. Along with paying monthly service charge fees to the retirement village, there will be exit costs once the property is no longer required. Make sure that you understand all the costs involved.

Current availability At the Old Whittington development, Lifestyle Village are currently undertaking further refurbishment schedules to meet demand and have two two-bedroomed bungalows which will be made available soon. Available now is a very spacious two-bedroom first floor apartment priced at £145,000. Lifestyle Gold Ltd have operated in the retirement property industry for over 40 years now and have certainly learnt a thing or two along the way! They hope to meet you soon… Lifestyle Village High Street, Old Whittington, Chesterfield, S41 9LQ Tel: 01246 453616 www.lifestyle-villages.co.uk

Building the best CALVER-BASED COTIC CUSTOM-BUILD THEIR BIKES USING TOUGH, DURABLE STEEL FRAMES. MARIA ILIFFE FINDS OUT MORE. ike many businesses, Calverbased COTIC Bikes was created out of necessity. The need in question came from owner Cy Turner and his desire to have a modern steel trail hardtail mountain bike - he just couldn’t find the right one. So, like the chartered mechanical engineer he was, he decided to make his own. That first bike was called the ‘Soul’ and first went into production in 2003. His business snowballed from there. After over 18 years in business, COTIC remains independent and now produces eight different models, all of which are custom-built at their workshop in the Peak District. The thing that sets their bikes apart is that they are made from steel,

L

26 www.sheffieldvibe.com

chosen because it is tough, durable and gives their bikes beautifully clean lines. The Reynolds 853 material they use for their frames gives them incredible strength but also gives incredible ride file as well as reducing weight. It was everything Cy dreamed of. “We don’t use steel to be different,” he said. “We use it because we strongly believe it builds the best bikes.” Working alongside Cy is Richard Baybutt, who is often described as the ‘man with the spanners’. When he’s not building bikes and prepping frames (amongst other things), he’s also a pro photographer and does all the company’s photoshoots. We spoke to him to find out more about the innovative Derbyshire company.

Tell us about the bikes you make. Which is your favourite and which is most popular?

We started off with the Soul; a tough but lightweight hardtail trail bike [hardtail bikes only have a suspension fork at the front] and now produce a range of eight different models covering almost all aspects of dirt and gravel riding. The hardtail frames are still super popular as people are discovering (and re-discovering) the joys of a simpler bike and sharpening their skills on increasingly technical tracks. Tell us more about who you work with.

There are eight of us at COTIC. We catch up on Zoom almost every day to see what’s happening and who’s working on what. Lockdown has brought us closer than ever before and we couldn’t be happier with such a small and dedicated team. Outside the company we work with local (and not so local) trail advocacy groups and also with Trash Free Trails - a not for profit that is aiming to reduce single-use pollution on our trails by 75 per cent by 2025. Are the founders still involved?

Cy still owns and runs the company, although he’s long since expanded out of his garage into two units nestled deep in the Peak District. How is the company and the market different from when the business started? How has the demand for bikes and custom-made bikes changed over the years?

Bikes are still as fun today as they were when COTIC was founded but the capabilities of them have improved dramatically and therefore so has its popularity. As people progress the sport, 28 www.sheffieldvibe.com

“Our test route up to the village of Eyam is pretty special. A nice climb followed by two bumpy bridleways, ending at a fish and chip shop. You can’t go wrong in the Peak District for cycling. It’s got a bit of everything and some phenomenal views to boot.” we need to continually progress our designs. We’re constantly prototyping and working with some outstanding riders to see where improvements can be made. How long does your average bike take to make?

In 2018 we moved production of our full suspension frames to the UK from Taiwan. The tubes are formed in Birmingham, they are welded and

painted in Scotland and assembled right here in Calver, Derbyshire. From tube to trail could be as little as a couple of weeks which is a great position to be in. Tell us about the COTIC community.

We have a handful of ambassadors dotted about the country and Europe. These amazing people are fantastic representatives for us – not only are they great riders in their own rights but they have interests and passions that benefit the wider riding community. Kelly for example is a new mum and gives talks encouraging women (and mothers) to get back out on the trails. Dave builds and maintains the UK’s best BMX track, Bolehills in Sheffield, and Chris runs a world famous MTB podcast “The Downtime podcast”.

hearing back from a customer about how much they enjoyed their ride or love their bike. The places it takes them to and the adventures they go on are always amazing to hear and that part never ever gets boring.

Does everyone working in COTIC ride?

Yes, working on bikes every day would be pretty difficult if we didn’t have an active interest in riding them as well. Our mechanic regularly wins the local races and Cy completed well over 100 laps of his local track this summer testing different kit.

What are the reasons for someone choosing COTIC and custom making, over purchasing a standard pre-made bicycle?

We have a bike trail feature in the magazine, do you have any favourite tracks / routes?

Our test route up to the village of Eyam is pretty special. A nice climb followed by two bumpy bridleways, ending at a fish and chip shop. You can’t go wrong in the Peak District for cycling. It’s got a bit of everything and some phenomenal views to boot. Further afield we’re huge fans of the

Tweed Valley in Scotland, Finale Liguria in Italy and The French Alps. What’s your favourite thing about the job?

Our favourite thing about the job is

We treat every single order as if it was our own bike and appreciate that every time a customer opens the box, it’s “new bike day” for them. That knowledge focusses us on making our products as good as they can possibly be and with such a tight and dedicated crew, that’s achievable. We’re big enough to do some great things, but small enough to respond to questions and concerns quickly. We’re real humans behind the company and offer a level of support that the larger brands can’t. Plus our bikes are really really good! What does Cotic’s future look like?

As long as more and more people are discovering the benefits of fresh air, adventure and exercise, the future is looking bright for sure. The 2020 bicycle boom has been a huge benefit for us but it’s brought supply problems which are affecting the entire industry. During these tricky times we’re simply aiming to get as many people rolling as possible and try to have as much fun as possible whilst doing it. TRAVEL

Capital gains WITH HISTORY, TOP ATTRACTIONS AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE, EDINBURGH IS HARD TO BEAT.

hilst the temptation to visit farflung shores has returned, the UK still holds plenty of charm for the casual traveller, particularly if you’re looking for a short break to entertain friends or family. With an abundance of history, top quality attractions and beautiful architecture, Edinburgh takes some beating. I took the whole family north of the border for a few days and loved every minute of it. I’d visited the Scottish capital before but purely for work purposes so was intrigued as to what the city had to offer from a leisure perspective. In short, it had everything.

W

36 www.sheffieldvibe.com

If you’ve never visited before, Edinburgh is essentially a city of two halves (and much more besides). On one side you’ve got the medieval old town, which is characterised by its centuriesold buildings and narrow alleyways. At its heart, perched on an extinct volcano, is Edinburgh Castle. In the elegant New Town, Georgian townhouses line the broad avenues and open squares whilst shoppers hit chain stores on Princes Street and upscale boutiques on and around George Street. We’d picked the perfect base for our two-night stay. The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile was located in the

old town part of the city and just a tenminute walk from Waverley train station. The Royal Mile is one of the main thoroughfares in the city and connects the castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which rests in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat. It is overlooked by impressive, towering tenement buildings and is home to many of the city’s main attractions as well as an abundance of souvenir shops, pubs and restaurants. The Adagio sits at the lower end of the Royal Mile and is a four-star residence offering 146 furnished apartments and studios fitted with a

fully-equipped kitchen. The rooms are perfect for those looking for a bit more space and flexibility, particularly if you’re staying for a much longer period. The aparthotel’s services includes access to a fitness room and private car park and breakfast is served in the cafeteria every morning (supplementary charge). We stayed in a one-bedroom

apartment for four people which had a bedroom with a double bed and a twin sofa bed which gave us more than enough space to relax. We didn’t take advantage of the kitchen during our short stay but can see the attraction for those staying longer - whilst there are plenty of food options close by, eating out can get expensive. We started our exploring on the old town side, heading up to the castle before turning down through the Grassmarket and up to the National Museum of Scotland. This free-to-enter museum is the UK’s most popular attraction outside of London and is worth visiting for the light-filled atrium of the Grand Gallery alone. Exhibitions cover Art, Design and Fashion, Natural World, Science and Technology, and Scottish History and Archaeology, the latter of which is housed in a modern extension to the building. Here there’s also a fabulous roof terrace with fantastic views of the city. Top of the agenda for my children was a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, which we travelled to by bus. It took about 20 minutes and an all-day family ticket (£9.50) offered great value for money. The zoo is set in over 82 acres of wooded hillside and is home to over 2,500 animals including the giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian - the only ones in the UK. Both are housed in their own enclosures with large outdoor areas that have lots of trees, large wooden climbing frames and pond for them to explore. Unfortunately they were both sleeping during our visit but they were impressive all the same. Also at Edinburgh Zoo you’ll find

Tiger Tracks, a new enclosure which houses their Sumatran tigers and gives you the perfect opportunity to get up close to these magnificent beasts. The koalas Goonaroo, Tanami, Kalari, Inala and Dameeli are also housed in their own space and were hugely popular with my two children too. We also loved the penguins, pygmy hippos and giraffes. The zoo is easy to navigate and there are plenty of food options at the Grasslands Restaurant or Jungle Cafe. Plentiful picnic areas mean you can take in your own snacks too. Getting the bus back into the centre of Edinburgh gave us the opportunity to explore the new town’s shopping areas which has recently been enhanced by the addition of the St James Quarter, home

to 80 retailers and 30 restaurants. Food-wise we stumbled across a couple of independent gems that we enjoyed so much we actually visited twice. Civerinos has three ‘slice’ venues in the city as well as a main restaurant and serves New York-style pizza that was some of the best we have tasted. We visited one of their slice restaurants on Forrest Road, close to the National Museum of Scotland, for huge slices (starting from £4) of pepperoni and margherita pizza washed down with ice cold cans of San Pellegrino. It was simple but tasty. Just down the road from Civerinos is Alandas Gelato which opened in the autumn and use Scottish cream and milk to make their Italian-style ice cream. Served in a cup or a cone, it was delicious. There was so much we didn’t do – and would have loved to have done – in Edinburgh but felt like we’d packed plenty into our three days there. The Adagio Aparthotel was a great location from which to explore and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again should we wish to venture further. For a short break, it had everything – even giant pandas.

Factbox: The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile is located at 231 Canongate. To find out more, call 0131 322 8299 or visit www.adagio-city.com Tickets for Edinburgh Zoo start from £21.95 for adults and £12.80 for children. Visit www.edinburghzoo.org.uk to find out more.

HIIT

Trampolining Trampoline fitness was devised with the aim of making fitness fun and with success, it’s becoming more and more popular. Health fanatics across the country are investing in mini trampolines for home fitness, whilst others are joining jumping fitness classes. With ten minutes of trampolining burning the same amount of calories as a 30-minute run, it’s proven a very effective method. Trampolining also increases your metabolism, improves your balance and strengthens your core, whilst improving your muscle strength, circulation and bone density. Improving weight loss three times faster than floor-based exercise, due to the added gravitational pull and g-force, trampolining is also great if you’re looking to shift a little of that holiday weight. With the rise in demand, there are now classes available in your local area. Queens Park Sports centre in Chesterfield host regular trampolining classes. www.chesterfield.gov.uk/sport-andleisure/queens-park-sports-centre

Watch the shadow of the peaks consume the city at sunset or the sun transform the greenery at daytime. After riding down Ringinglow Road for just over 2 miles, you can cycle up Wimble Holme Hill, expect small paths on the edge of the hill with stunning trees and wilderness to look down upon. After this you should reach Blackamoor where you can stop and catch your breath whilst you gaze across the landscape. Heading next to Big Moor, which is infact a big moor! Usually ridden as part of the Eastern Moors loop, it leads up to the Wellington Monument and the Eagle Stone, until you reach Curbar Edge. This is a spectacular place to stop and embrace the stunning views, even used for wedding photos, it’s hard not to be taken aback. Ladybower Loop

Lady Canning’s

This charming but steady circular starts at the Ladybower Inn (because there’s parking – ask nicely!) and rungs for 16.4 miles with 2,500 feet of ascent. There’s good road climbs at the start of Hope Brink and Lockerbrook, and some fine descents. To start, head towards the reservoir and turn left at the lights onto the A6013. Take the next right, after the dam. Here you’ll climb on the C-road to the village of Thornhill, where you swing sharp right to gain a level road to Aston. Drop to a stream crossing through a sunken lane deep in vegetation, turning sharp right. Then it’s climb, climb, climb. The incline is never too onerous and there are fine views up the valley to keep your mind off matters lactic. Once you’ve made it, attain the narrow ridge (by Peak District standards – don’t expect Sharp Edge) joining Win Hill to the rest of the Peak. Keep to the same north-westerly bearing, past Hope Cross and past the bridleway crossroads. You can now enjoy a rollick down to the Woodlands Valley on a stony descent, then zig sharply right at the bottom. Cross the river, then carefully cross the Snake Road (A57) to gain the next climb, initially on tarmac, to Rowlee Farm and Lockerbrook. Head north through the woods for a satisfying descent to the reservoir near Gores Farm. From here, head south on tarmac, past the Derwent Dam, and cut down to your left at the incongruous roundabout, skirting the head of Ladybower itself. Shortly after crossing Mill Brook, where the track goes up to Ashes Farm, take a step climb cutting diagonally up to Derwent Edge above a forest. Contour round to Whinstone Lee Tor then turn sharp left (heading east to Cutthroat Bridge). Zag sharply back south-west (parallel to the A57) for a memorable final flourish back to the Ladybower Inn.

Head out of Sheffield on Ringinglow Road and you’ll arrive at Lady Canning’s on the edge of Houndkirk Moor. A crowdfunding initiative saw the creation of two mountain bike trails – Blue Steel and Cooking on Gas. The aim with Lady Cannings is to offer fun trails for children, beginners and intermediate riders to enjoy and improve their skills before building up to the more technical trails in the Peak District. Blue Steel is 1.4km in length and is packed full of fun but there are no jumps or features that will put off the novice, with the trail twisting and turning through berms and rollers from top to bottom. The surface is generally smooth. Cooking on Gas is slightly longer at 1.6km and incorporates less in the way of features and is more of a flow trail with loads of opportunity to pump for speed over rollers and out of the massive berms. There’s nothing that a beginner can’t handle.

Mam Tor

Monsal Trail The Monsal Trail is a stunning traffic-free cycle route right in the heart of the Peak District National Park. This 8.95-mile route is great for families as there are lots of interesting things to see along the way. Enjoy spotting wildlife and the remainders from the area’s railway heritage. There are many entrance points to the Monsal Trail along the route between Bakewell and Blackwell Mill at Chee Dale. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users can access the trail through accessible ramps at Bakewell Station, Hassop Station, Great Longstone Station and Millers Dale Station. The trail is a way-marked route with coordinated interpretation panels and listening posts to help people enjoy all it has to offer. You travel through four railway tunnels - Headstone Tunnel, Cressbrook Tunnel, Litton Tunnel and Chee Tor Tunnel. Each tunnel is about 400 metres long and is lit during normal daylight hours. They are operated by a light sensor, so in winter when the hours of daylight are less, the lights in the tunnels will switch off earlier in the day - around 4.30pm. If you are using the trail in the afternoon you are advised to take a torch or have bike lights in case you get caught out. If the lights go off because of a power failure there is a two-hour emergency back up in place.

To find out more, visit pedalnorth.com/ peak-district-mountain-bike-routes/

This is a rollicking 12.4-mile ride around the Hope Valley. Cave Dale is one of the most technical descents around these parts, so be ready to hang on tight. The route across Mam Tor to Hollins Cross and down to Edale is sublime. Once you’re parked up in the centre of Castleton, head towards the Shivering Mountain, then fork right towards Treak Cliff Cavern. Pass this on the long northward zig that uses to be the old A625. This was abandoned in 1979 due to landslips and the full effect of these become apparent when you get to the southbound zag. Climb over a post-apocalyptic series of steps up and down. At the top turn right towards the west, and then take the sharp right turn signposted to Barber Booth and Edale to the top of Mam Nick. Turn right on bridleway just after the crest and flank Mam Tor on the north side, bouncing down to Hollin’s Cross. Drop back on your left, descending to the top of Edale. Head left up the valley, bearing left over a small bridge and climbing on tarmac back toward Mam Nick. Where the road dinks left, turn right onto the Chapel Gate public way. This is not the beast it once was so climb steadily on well-graded chippings round the back of Rushop Edge, bearing left where it levels out. Follow the edge, including a short but tricky descent back to the Mam Nick road, retrace back to the Winnats Road then dink right and left towards Rowter Farm. After a mile, turn left onto the Limestone Way. This starts innocuously enough but funnels into a superb, demanding, loose, blocky descent down Cave Dale. The only way this could be harder would be if besieged defenders were dropping boiling oil from the ruins of Peveril Castle. This makes a fine climax back into Castleton.

IN BRIEF

Belmayne collects for homeless

Fund provides hope

Dronfield-based financial planners, Belmayne, are teaming up with homelessness Jon Stevens charity, Pathways of Chesterfield, to provide practical assistance to those who sleep on the streets. The independent advisers are inviting local residents to bring donations of clothing, food or toiletries to their Chesterfield Road office to be passed onto Pathways. The full list of items the charity is collecting includes: • Sleeping bags and small tents • Rucksacks • Small and medium-sized warm clothing for men and women, such as jeans, joggers, t-shirts, jumpers, hoodies and coats • New underwear for men and women • Food that can be prepared with water, such as Cup-aSoup and Pot Noodles • Bottled water • Toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and shower gel Jon Stevens, a partner at Belmayne, said: “A winter on the streets of North Derbyshire cannot be a welcome prospect for anyone. Pathways is somewhere the homeless and those at risk of homelessness can go for help and we want to ensure there are supplies available for all who need them. Anyone who would like to donate to this appeal is welcome to drop off items at our premises during office hours and we will ensure they reach the charity.” A volunteer handler is also available to accept donations at one of Pathways’ buildings, 106 Saltergate, Chesterfield, on Wednesdays between 10am and 12 noon. East Midlands Chamber to help create jobs, support digital adoption and accelerate lowcarbon transition after securing £5m from Community Renewal Fund More than 1,000 jobs in the region will be safeguarded and 200 new roles created by the middle of 2022 as part of an East Midlands Accelerator project to be delivered via the Community Renewal Fund (CRF). The five-strand programme, which will also aim to establish 100 new businesses and support 160 companies to decarbonise, will be led by East Midlands Chamber across seven local authority areas in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire after the region’s leading business representation group successfully bid for £5.36million of the Government’s new £220million fund. The CRF is the forerunner to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which will eventually replace EU structural funds that help to deliver local business support and skills development programmes. The East Midlands Accelerator, which will be delivered in conjunction with local authorities, universities and other business support services in the region, includes a Race to Zero-Carbon Accelerator, Digital Transformation Accelerator, Start-Up to Scale-Up Accelerator, Kickstart Accelerator and Financial Accelerator.

Unemployment down Unemployment in the East Midlands has dropped to its lowest level since the beginning of the pandemic, new figures show. The region’s unemployment rate fell to 4.1 per cent for the period between July and September 2021, according to the Office for National Statistics. This marked a 0.2 per cent reduction compared to the previous reported period between June and August, while it was also 0.2 per cent below the UK average. East Midlands Chamber chief executive Scott Knowles said: “It’s promising to see the jobs market growing again after the struggles of the past year and suggests the economy is moving in the right direction. “The latest figures reflect how industries that are heavily represented in our region’s economy – including hospitality, retail, and leisure and tourism – are recovering well after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.” 48 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Shining a light The gleaming exterior of Chatsworth House, its stone facade cleaned and its window frames freshly gilded with gold leaf, is testament to a decade-long programme of comprehensive renovations completed by the current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. A new book, ‘Chatsworth, Arcadia, Now’, captures the house at a moment of high optimism, recording the grandest of English country houses in more than 400 new colour photographs with rare access given to its exteriors, interiors and collections. With text by the acclaimed art historian and author John-Paul Stonard and fresh, modern photography by Victoria Hely-Hutchinson, the book features extensive contributions from the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. A strikingly modern portrait, the book tells the story of Chatsworth through seven scenes from its 500-year history and that of the dynasty that has shaped it. Set in an unspoilt Derbyshire valley, it is surrounded by moorland and home to the Cavendish family for sixteen generations yet its timelessness is an illusion, Chatsworth is in constant state of change and innovation. ‘Chatsworth, Arcadia, Now’ by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire with John-Paul Stonard, and photography by Victoria Hely-Hutchinson is published in hardback by Particular Books in October 2021, priced £50.

MOTORING

A car with a conscience Fiat has announced a partnership with (RED) by unveiling New (500)RED, the first (RED) car in a series of special editions created to help the charity fight against global pandemics. U2’s Bono, co-founder, (RED), stated: “This partnership is a powerful shot in the arm for (RED)’s fight against pandemics and the complacency that fuels them. It’s hard to believe that 15 years on from (RED)’s founding we are now fighting another virus, but it’s even harder to see the virus of injustice that marked the AIDS pandemic is alive and well during COVID.” The New all-electric (500)RED was created in collaboration between Fiat and (RED) with a shared message to care for the planet and for its people. The special series is now available across the entire 500 family: the New (500)RED, (500)RED and (500X)RED will adopt the colour red as a hallmark externally on the bodywork, logos, mirror caps and design cues on the alloy wheels.
