Get a better, healthier night’s sleep COURTESY OF WOOLROOM, THE UK’S LEADING WOOL BEDDING SPECIALIST. e honest, how well do you sleep? There are many reasons for why we should be focussing on getting a better night’s slumber, something that has proved particularly elusive for many people over the last 12 months. To name but a few; a good night’s sleep can drastically reduce stress, improve your memory, reduced cravings for calorific foods and improve brain function. Put simply, a good night’s sleep will ensure you’re functioning as well as possible. What many don’t consider when investing in sleep, however, is bedding and the many ways choosing the right type of product can benefit your health. British wool, for instance, is scientifically proven to deliver a better, healthier night’s sleep and whether you invest in a wool pillow, duvet, mattress topper or even a mattress protector, you can be confident that the entire range of bedding from Woolroom will be kind to your sleep, as well as being kind to the environment. Founded in 2008, Woolroom is the UK’s leading wool bedding specialist and has developed a reputation for being the go-to retailer for enabling a better night’s ‘clean sleep’, owing to its temperature

regulating, hypoallergenic and chemical-free properties. This reputation for providing an all-natural sleep solution, not just in the UK but in countries such the USA and Iceland, has seen Woolroom recently honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, one of the most prestigious business awards in the country. Chris Tattersall, managing director of Woolroom, said: “We are immensely proud to have been selected as a winner for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, it has been a team effort delivering such a great increase in international trade over the last three years and I would like to

thank my team for all their hard work, particularly through the challenges of the pandemic. “We would encourage anyone thinking about entering for this year’s award to go for it – it is a great way of elevating British business on

an international platform. As our business continues to grow, we will most definitely be applying for another one in years to come.” The real highlight in all their products is the beautiful British wool they use, which is the most sustainable fibre in the world. More recently Woolroom has developed a partnership with Woolkeepers to deliver fully traceable wool back to the farm showcasing its natural sustainable benefits while at the same time supporting British farmers and paying a better than market price for the wool. “We support hardworking British farmers by sourcing our wool from British farms,” added Chris. “We have some of the finest in the world, and we’re proud of the high standards of animal welfare they follow to make wool as kind as it is comfortable. For your peace of mind, we don’t source wool from anywhere that doesn’t guarantee healthy, happy animals.” Find out more by visiting www.thewoolroom.com, pop into the Peak Shopping Village store, or Peak Shopping Village clearance outlet where you can save up to 70 per cent off the RRP. Confetti

Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... KATERINA VYURKOVA LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY. our wedding day will always be one of the most cherished events in your life, as the memories will continue warming your heart up each time you will flip through a photo album or look back at Facebook ‘Memories’ several years after you gave your vows. The preparation for the magical day can sometimes be extremely overwhelming. The entire process can take anything between two weeks and two years to complete, as each couple has different needs and wishes, ranging

Y

from wanting to throw an extravagant party to deciding on a simple exchange of rings at the local register office. The length of time needed will also depend on whether there will be any unforeseen circumstances, such as a trusted photographer cancelling the photoshoot out of nowhere, or the time available to get ready being extremely limited, which is usually the case in our busy world. While leaving as much time as possible for a stress-free preparation process is undoubtedly the preferred option, it is not always possible to start

thinking about what kind of font will be on your guests’ invitations 12 months in advance. Needless to say, some of the most essential items such as wedding dress and suit are rarely booked several days before the event. Taking into account that the attire is probably the very first thing a couple would think about the moment a conversation about the wedding begins, it probably plays a major role in setting the timeframe for preparation at three months to leave enough time to find the perfect outfits.

013 SSide June21 12/05/2021 10:23 Page 1

Three months before: Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 governmentapproved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the post-ceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.

Two months before: Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a

Two weeks before:

paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance.

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end. When it comes to the wedding speeches, avoid scheduling a particular date and follow the flow of your emotions. Once you are ready to write the words of love down, don’t waste a minute to pour your heart onto the paper.

One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.

One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off. The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream. www.sheffieldvibe.com 13

Green credentials YORKSHIRE WINDOWS GOING GREENER WITH EXCLUSIVE ECOMAX PARTNERSHIP. n exclusive partnership between Yorkshire Windows and leading sealed unit manufacturer Clayton Glass is raising the standard on environmentally friendly and energy efficient home improvement. “The standard for glass production in this country is that 25 per cent of the product will be made from recycled material but EcoMAX is already using 40 per cent recycled glass, with a commitment to make a significant increase in that percentage by 2025,” said Yorkshire Windows Managing Director Ian Chester. “Even the seal around the edge of each unit is biodegradable, an important detail and one that creates absolutely no reduction in efficiency.” EcoMAX boasts a U-Value of 1.2, 71 per cent Solar Gain and 82 per cent Light Transmission – all intended to further increase the benefits to the planet by maximising the sun’s natural heat and light to reduce the reliance on fossilfuelled lights and heating. And adding to the green credentials, EcoMAX - in association with Yorkshire Windows - will also plant a tree in honour of each EcoMAX installation, offsetting the carbon footprint of the

A

manufacturing process. As part of that pioneering green promise,Yorkshire Windows has only recently completed the planting of its first 75 trees. “This is just the start of a new, green approach to the environmental issues raised by the industry,” said Ian. “The trees have been planted in a sustainable forest development and we are pleased that, in this way, we are making our contribution to addressing environmental concerns.” Ian added that the Yorkshire Windows team were delighted to be the first company in the region to offer EcoMAX across their full range.

Yorkshire Windows Managing Director Ian Chester

“Every window we install will now feature EcoMAX glass, at no extra cost to the customer - and the glass we remove goes straight into the recycling system,” he said. “Increasingly we are finding that clients are wanting to know about the environmental impact of replacement windows and this new product addresses many of the issues that concern them most. “The introduction of EcoMax into our full range is one further and important step in creating a greener industry. Yorkshire Windows, which has its head office in Rotherham and a showroom in Dronfield, is is one of the region’s best known names in uPVC doors and windows, composite doors, bi-fold doors, conservatories, orangeries, garage doors and roofline products. It is also already the supplier of Smartglass Dynamic - another Clayton Glass product - the first automatically self-tinting glass technology for conservatories, orangeries and other glazing elements. or me, memories of the Peak District will always be synonymous with my grandad. Armed with his circular walks book, we would often jump into his sand-coloured Austin Maxi (remember those?) and head out into Derbyshire to walk, talk, explore and, usually, eat. In his backpack was usually a flask of strong tea, sandwiches and if we were lucky, some foil-wrapped coconut loaf or fruit cake which would be eaten perched on a rock on Stanage Edge or by Padley Gorge. The ‘we’ usually included my sister and cousins and we’d head out for long walks across Longshaw, make our way across Froggatt Edge and sometimes climb to the hunting tower above Chatsworth. We traversed moorlands and woodlands, marvelled at waterfalls and monuments, sometimes got lost and sometimes got stared down by angry-looking cattle but we enjoyed every bit of it. They were happy days; the fact we have such amazing beauty and variety on our

F

doorstep is a blessing indeed. The Peak District was in fact the first of Britain’s 15 national parks and was designated on 17 April 1951. It covers 555 square miles, which is about the size of Greater London, and reaches into five counties - Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire,Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. It is made up of impressive gritstone edges (Dark Peak), steep limestone dales (White Peak) and rolling hills and farmland (South West Peak). Its highest point is Kinder Scout at 2,086 feet (636m) and there are 26,000 miles of dry stone wall - enough to build a wall around the Earth. The Peak District is the most accessible national park; an estimated 20 million people live within an hour’s travel time and it’s no surprise that it welcomes more than 13 million visitors each year. They come to enjoy walking, climbing, cycling, mountain biking, caving, angling, nature-watching,

photography, gliding, visiting historic houses, country pubs and tearooms. It’s charms have never been more prevalent than over the last 12 months when ‘local exercise’ became the norm and with the Peak District so close to our borders, it was often the perfect place to get away, unwind and escape the claustrophobia of the pandemic. In fact, the tourist board reported that following the initial lockdown, the numbers of those using traffic-free trails to exercise doubled to almost 4,000 a day. “The global pandemic has given us the opportunity to use the healing power of landscape and the natural world to rebuild a greener and healthier society,” said Andrew McCloy, chair of the Peak District National Park Authority. “National Parks like the Peak District play a vital on a local level, as a home for people and nature, but also for wider society.” Zahid Hamid, who is chair of the programme and resources committee, discovered the wonder of the Peak

District from a young age. “I was not prepared for the wonder and beauty that awaited me as an 11-year-old when my geography class came to Grindsbrook and Edale and I am still awed and humbled by the Peak District on each and every visit, including in inclement weather!” he said. “My personal journey of introducing family, friends and others to this glorious place and seeing the impact on urban based lives and mindsets has led me to my present position and role in ensuring that we all cherish what is so special about our National Parks and to appreciate that they are also fragile places. “I am proud and privileged as the current Chair of Programmes and Resources Committee, as we mark the 70th anniversary, to assist everyone to protect, care and enjoy this jewel in the centre of our country that is the Peak District National Park.” Sarah Fowler is chief executive of the Peak District National Park Authority

and was born in Zambia before growing up in Wiltshire. Having discovered the area only recently, such was its attraction that when offered the opportunity to work here, it was something she couldn’t turn down, as she explains: “My first experience of the Peak District was a family holiday several years before I came here for work.We were staying at a camp site in Ashbourne and cycled on the Tissington Trail. The kids were tiny at the time, learning to ride their bikes. We ended up in an amazing place in Tissington and had a lovely cup of coffee. It’s a simple, but very special memory. “What drew me to my role at the Peak District National Park was the opportunity to connect people to the environment. By helping people to connect with inspiring places, hopefully they can be inspired to care for them. “It’s not just somewhere I work but somewhere I enjoy with family and friends. I’ve always loved cycling on the Tissington, Monsal and High Peak trails

with my two kids – especially when they were younger. I also do a bit of road cycling in very small groups and, when possible, I cycle to work. “I’m a keen runner and one of my favourite routes is from the top of Beeley Hill to Hob Hurst’s House to Chatsworth Edge. With a mix of moorland and woodland, you get a sense of both the Dark and White Peaks. “I also love White Edge and Curbar Edge – especially in the snow. The weekend before I started my job here, in 2015, I took my kids up there for a walk. It was January and there was snow – it was magical.” Everyone has their own special memories of the Peak District, and their special places to visit, but for me it will always be those days with my grandad that stick in my mind. I now take my own children on many of those same walks and hopefully they will make their own memories too. Here’s to another 70 years and more.

Perfect partnership TWO LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESSES HAVE JOINED TOGETHER TO OPEN A NEW BUTCHERY AND DELI. iversity is the cornerstone to the success of many businesses, particularly those long-standing ones that have stood the test of time. Take Whites of Calver, for example. This family business was started by current owner Edward White’s grandfather, E.T. White, just over 100 years ago and has occupied the same site at Calver crossroads since the Second World War. It now encompasses a petrol station, coffee shop and bodega-cumfarm shop. The multi award-winning Whites Calver has even caught the eye of National Retailers using it as a benchmark for innovation, diversification and quality of offering. Edward took full control of the business in 2001 with a vision to “develop a bodega with a farm shop feel, showcasing a comprehensive range of local produce”. Working with local suppliers, including The Bridge Bakehouse, John Hattersley Wines, Wye Bakehouse and Thornbridge Brewery. With a clear focus on local sustainability, Edward has taken the next step in enhancing Whites Calver appeal. Fischer’s of Baslow is another local family business and a name synonymous with fine dining. Having opened in 1988 by Max and Susan Fischer, the restaurant and 11-bedroom hotel has been both highly accoladed by Michelin for over 30 years, and been a destination venue, not just for people living in Derbyshire but much further afield too. Like many hospitality businesses, the last 12 months have been challenging to say the least and Fischer’s have had to find new ways to reach their discerning clientele. This started with Fischer’s at Home and a new exclusive partnership with Whites of Calver. “It was an old concept we revisited

D

from 20 years ago,” said Neil Fischer, son of Max and Susan. “We didn’t want to deliver takeaway meals as we couldn’t guarantee the quality so instead looked at dishes that customers could cook at home. Once we had decided what these would be, we needed a suitable outlet to sell them and Whites of Calver fitted the bill perfectly.” With a shared ethos for locallysourced, fresh produce, the Fischer’s at Home meals have been a huge success, complementing the existing suppliers and even attracting new clientele. Popular dishes have included fish pie, beef bourguignon and dauphinoise potatoes. Keen to build on this success, the twofamily businesses have now strengthened their bond further with the opening of a new Fischer & Co-branded butchery and deli, which opened on 22 March. Headed up by a Fischer’s dedicated team, complimented with it’s butcher Richard, with over 40 years’ experience! The all new concession which features prominently at Whites Calver, showcases the very best butchery Derbyshire has to offer. From hand-reared “Baslow Beef ” reared on Gorse Bank Farm above Baslow to, the finest pork, reared in Tideswell and not forgetting the Derbyshire lamb, hand-picked weekly at market. To complement, Neil and team have sourced the very finest produce

Neil Fischer and Edward White

from smoked and cured meats to seasonal cheeses as well as ‘grab and go’ items such as freshly made sandwiches, hot sausage rolls and pies. “I’ve always wanted to open a butchery but it was always about finding the right partner,” said Edward. “With Neil, and Fischer’s, we have found that. They have superb links to the local area and suppliers which is reflected in the produce you’ll find at the butchery and across the deli shelves. The high quality local fresh produce complemented by store cupboard must-haves means there is something for everyone. “In today’s world, were more than just a farm shop. A retail space that can supply your every need with the very best produce at a price point that won’t break the bank!” There’s certainly no standing still for Whites of Calver, and now with Fischer & Co on board, no doubt there’s lots more to come. The Ultimate indulgence MARK THE RETURN TO ‘NORMAL’ LIFE WITH A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER. ou could almost hear the creaking of the trapdoors as they were cautiously raised by those sheltering within. “Could it really be over?” were the words on everyone’s lips as they emerged into daylight, blinking at the glare. It was true. Now everyone could get down to the gym and hone that waistline expanded by endless takeaways, have the

hair grown to Rapunzel-like length finally shorn and even call in for a quick half at the local on the way home. That, at least, was the scenario envisaged by the newspapers, nearly all of whom ran special features along the lines of the Top 25 things to do after lockdown. If there is anything good to emerge from the pandemic, it is that it forced us

all to look again at the way we spend our leisure time. If you really are waiting on the starting blocks for the pub to open, or yearning for hairdresser-talk once again. (“Are you booked on yer holidays yet”?) then who are we to argue otherwise. But if you are looking to mark the return to normal life with a weekend to remember, here are a few suggestions.

Coastal Weekend Devon is a county offering sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. The English county is also highlighting itself as a ‘foodie tourist’ destination. The combination of moorland grazing, rich

arable soil and coastal waters provides a wide range of fresh local produce. This includes grass-fed cattle and free range poultry, fresh fruit and vegetables, rapeseed and seaweed and local fish and shellfish. There are also the Devonshire cream teas along with breweries and traditional pubs. Salcombe Brewery was founded in 2016

and has a reputation for award-winning beer. A visit to the brewery for a tour or Brew Day is the way to learn more about their ales and how they are created. IN BRIEF

Credit: Chatsworth House Trust

Trio of new appointments

Rare Breeds Accreditation Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) has awarded RBST accreditation to Chatsworth Farmyard, recognising its important contribution to the conservation of some the rarest livestock and equine breeds native to the UK. Chatsworth Farmyard is home to a number of the country’s rarest breeds of livestock and equines, including Suffolk Punch horses, Shire horses, Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs, Bagot goats and Cream Legbar chickens, with British Landrace pigs and Eriskay ponies due to join them soon. The farmyard at Chatsworth in Derbyshire has provided agricultural education and entertainment for almost half a century, and the estate has a longstanding connection with RBST. Duchess Deborah, mother of the current Duke of Devonshire, served as RBST President and the Cavendish family are valued ambassadors for native breed conservation. RBST is the national charity that works to secure the future of rare breeds of native livestock and equines. Chatsworth Farmyard now becomes part of the 25-strong network of RBST accredited farm parks which take part in crucial conservation programmes, manage special breeding groups, and support education about rare breeds and why they matter.

The marketing campaign will feature in local magazines and newspapers, and across social media. People will be able to sign up to receive Love Chesterfield news by email, which will include details of local events and ways to get involved. Market Traders will also be giving away special edition Love Chesterfield shopping bags. Each month there will be the chance to win a gift from a local independent shop by taking part in a Love Chesterfield survey. The prize, worth up to £50, will showcase the great products that can only be bought in Chesterfield town centre. 48 www.sheffieldvibe.com

MOTORING

MANY CAR COMPANIES ARE LOOKING AT HOW THEY CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Back in black The Jaguar I-PACE has achieved global recognition and won multiple awards for its outstanding design. Now, the all-electric performance SUV’s appeal is heightened still further by the creation of the I-PACE Black special editions. These exclusive new additions to the IPACE range benefit from an enhanced specification over the SE and HSE models on which they are based and includes the Black Pack, panoramic roof and privacy glass. The clean, contemporary look is accentuated by the gloss black finish of the 20-inch five-spoke wheels, and the IPACE Black models are available in the full range of colours and include metallic paints as standard. Like every model in the range, the I-PACE Black models offers a wealth of technology designed to make every journey simpler and more enjoyable. The Pivi Pro infotainment system is ready to go by the time you’re in the driving seat and is as intuitive to use as your smartphone. For example, the EV navigation can show if nearby charging stations are available or in use, the type of connector they have, what they cost, and how long it will take to charge. A 90kWh battery delivers 400PS and 696Nm of instant torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Prices start from £65,245.

Carbon-neutral goal As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. As a start to achieving this goal, the EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ and is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbonneutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. MercedesBenz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. The first model on the market in the UK will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW. The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger.

Sport Venture A w-hole new ball game With more than 18 million units built, the Polo is one of the world’s most successful compact cars. Now,Volkswagen has unveiled its next evolutionary stage. The design, technologies and specification matrix of the bestseller have had a comprehensive update, as is immediately obvious when you see the vehicle’s new front and rear. And the range of standard equipment has been expanded significantly. On board every model you will now find: LED headlights and LED tail light clusters, the Digital Cockpit (digital instruments), an infotainment system and a multifunction steering wheel, among other things. In addition, the Polo now offers partly automated driving across its entire speed range thanks to the optional IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system. This brings together the new predictive ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and Lane Assist – which now comes as standard in every Polo – to create a new assist system to achieve this. The range will include Life, Style and R-Line models. 50 www.sheffieldvibe.com

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 range has been enhanced with the launch of the limited edition Sport Venture, which arrives in UK dealerships this month. Based on the 1.5-litre 132ps Sport Convertible, the £27,615 Sport Venture features a stand-out design that includes free-of-charge Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint matched to a grey fabric hood and silver door mirror trims. Drop the roof and the Sport Venture’s Light Stone Nappa leather and silver roll hoop trims further complement the Deep Crystal Blue paint, as do the 16inch bright alloy wheels.
