Best Contemporary

Best Night Out

Best Italian

What characterises a contemporary restaurant? You won’t find a satisfactory definition in the dictionary, but follow your nose and you’ll know when you see one. When the word “contemporary” is used to describe a cuisine, one can assume that the food is less traditional Sunday roast and more a talented chef ’s take on anything from pork belly to pineapple. Our region is blessed with many examples of venues striving to provide something special and a little different.

It isn’t all about the menu... some venues just know how to make sure the evening is memorable for many different reasons. With a warm welcome and a lively atmosphere, when there’s something to celebrate and it’s time to let your hair down, these venues will never let you down.

A great Italian restaurant is something to savour. From crowd-pleasing classics like pizza and lasagne to more complex dishes bringing out the best in fresh ingredients like truffles and buffalo mozzarella, to the fabulous wines such as Chianti, Amarone and Barolo, in a warm and welcoming setting, Sheffield and North Derbyshire’s finest are hard to beat.

❖ Brocco ❖ Red Lion Peak Edge ❖ Casa Hotel ❖ Mosborough Hall ❖ The Cavendish, Baslow ❖ The George Hathersage ❖ The Maynard ❖ Bank House ❖ Dunston Hall Bistro ❖ West 10

Restaurants in Hotels If you’re checking in to any of these hotels for the evening, there is no need to search out an alternative venue for dinner. A far cry from the bland cafeteria experience doled out by many of our national chains, these independent hotels have outstanding restaurants that are definitely worth a visit in their own right, even if you aren’t hanging around for breakfast. ❖ Brocco ❖ Red Lion Peak Edge ❖ Casa Hotel ❖ Mosborough Hall ❖ The George Hathersage ❖ The Maynard

Best Dining Pub Some of the most inventive cooking, from some of the most gifted chefs around, can be found in the pubs of Sheffield and North Derbyshire. From comfort food to gastro finesse, with hand-pulled ales and some stellar wine lists as well, going to the pub for a bite to eat never seemed so tempting. ❖ Hyde Park Inn ❖ Peacock @ Cutthorpe ❖ Bull’s Head ❖ Wortley Arms ❖ Shoulder of Mutton ❖ Walkley Cottage

❖ Cubana ❖ Kettle Black ❖ Owlerton Stadium ❖ The Wildcard Bar & Grill

Best Café/Light Bite Café culture has transformed the way we eat over the last few years – most definitely for the better. This is casual dining at its best, presided over by highly-skilled chefs. Even a snatched bite in a busy working day can be a memorable dining experience. ❖ 1554 Cathedral Cafe ❖ Greedy Greek Deli ❖ Hopper ❖ Insomnia Cafe ❖ Dunston Hall Bistro ❖ Whirlow Hall Farm

Best Oriental One of the most refreshing aspects of the ever-changing restaurant scene in Sheffield has been the explosion of Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants across the region – and also the continuing commitment to excellence from some of the region’s oldest and best-loved establishments. These are the places to head for.

❖ Nonnas ❖ Maranellos ❖ Zizzona ❖ Rossi’s ❖ Il Lupo

Best Newcomer A thriving restaurant scene needs new blood and we have been delighted to observe an explosion of new venues in the last 12 months, all catering for a wide range of dining choices. ❖ The Wildcard Bar & Grill ❖ The George Hathersage ❖ Dunston Hall Bistro ❖ Whirlow Hall Farm ❖ Hopper

Westside Readers’ Choice Thanks to all the readers who have voted online for their favourite restaurants. We have received a record number of votes from across the board. We will announce the winner on 8 November.

❖ Chinatown ❖ Patoo Thai ❖ All Siam

Best Indian It is said you can eat more varieties of cuisines from India than the rest of the world put together, with delicious recipes being passed on through generations purely by word of mouth. Each little corner of the country has a speciality of its own, and Sheffield is blessed with some fabulous restaurants that excel in demonstrating this. ❖ Ashoka ❖ Prithiraj

❖ Everest ❖ Jaflong

Westside Restaurant of the Year 2021 A shortlist of three restaurants has been singled out as worthy of consideration for our main award. After the final round of dining out, it’s time for the judges to gather in a huddle and deliver their verdict. All will be revealed on the night…

It felt as if you were part of the family which made the dining experience all the more wholesome. We were becoming increasingly excited to tuck in and taste the great food that was on offer. The ambience was authentic and enjoyable with a modern and functional interior, Greek music playing in the background and photographs and paintings scattered around. Dish by dish our spread of food was delivered from the kitchen with a proud smile on the staff ’s faces. They were noticeably informative about each and every dish, describing it in a simple way. Every dish was generous in portion and well presented. The meal was beautifully cooked in an authentic way, from the owner’s mother making the baklava to very well constructed recipes.

Tzatziki, homous, strofilia and olive paté dips were brought out and accompanied the food perfectly and condiments were provided on the table. It was a delight to taste a mixture of different dishes to get the full Greek dining experience. A couple of our favourites had to be the Greek lemon potatoes, cooked in olive oil, lemon juice and herbs – they were both delish and moreish, I would come back to The Greedy Greek Deli just to have more of those. We followed this with a platter formed of minced beef, lamb and chicken kofta with a traditional, fresh Greek salad – The meat was tender and accompanied the rest of the dishes perfectly. The variety of vegetarian dishes were, to my surprise, especially beautiful with stuffed peppers filled with vegetables, rice, herbs and feta and spinach/feta samosas. The baklava was a lovely end to a special meal, made with filo pastry, nuts and honey syrup. The customer service from the waiters and Dennis and Helen (the owners of Greedy Greek) was exceptional, ensuring we were enjoying our meal and making sure they were available to assist us if necessary. The whole experience of eating food whilst in that specific environment worked perfectly - it felt like an ideal place to catch up with friends and family. It was authentic

Greek food served by a proud Greek owner. The deli provide vegan and vegetarian options and also have a vast variety of dishes which makes it the perfect opportunity to indulge in something you may never have tried. I suggest taking the recommendations of the staff if you’re looking to try something new. Conversing with the staff was a delight, with stories and memories of Zante and recommendations of places to stay, should you ever have the privilege of visiting. The conversations added to the experience and made the evening even more enjoyable. The Greedy Greek Deli deliver far and wide to put on a spread for your occasions with their own personally selected delivery drivers to provide a faster service. They can also cater for parties and gatherings. The Greedy Greek Deli 418-420 Sharrow Vale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZP Tel: 0114 266 7719 http://thegreedygreekdeli.co.uk

CHRISTMAS

Festive fun THE COUNTDOWN TO THE CHRISTMAS PARTY SEASON IS ON. s winter approaches, it can only mean one thing – the countdown to Christmas and the festive party season is on. This December, across the region, families, friends and work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or two – together. After last year's suspension of all gatherings, and venues having to close, you have extra incentive to celebrate in style. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue is a fabulous thing to look forward to as the year draws to a close. If it’s a works outing, it is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie. It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and

booking a fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here.

The spirit of Christmas FROM PREMIUM BOTTLES TO EVERYDAY TIPPLES, EMBRACE THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH THIS CLASSY SELECTION. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here are time-honoured traditions that have to be observed at Christmas. The ritual is enshrined in The five commandments we all know so well. 1. Thou shalt attend the office Christmas party 2. Thou shalt beg forgiveness the next morning, and thy thoughts will be cringeworthy (“Did I really kiss a man on the forehead?”) 3. Thou shalt order a multitude of kitchen gadgets from Lakeland and place them in gift boxes. Thence they will be banished to an unknown cupboard for all time 4. Thou shalt not refuse a fourth helping of sprouts and turkey, be thou ever so full 5. Thou shalt drink spirits. It’s the last one that is interesting. Why on earth should most people drink strong liqueurs at Christmas, and at no other time in their lives? It’s certainly not enshrined in the scripts – for instance, who could imagine the three wise men bringing a bottle of Bells along rather than exotic gifts (definitely not obtained from Lakeland)? But there’s little doubt that this national oddity happens every year. At one end of the scale, there is the torrent of Baileys and Malibu that always get the mad aunts kicking over the traces at Yuletide. At the other, there are rare, refined and expensive malt whiskies and cognacs that are the province of the connoisseur. In between, there is a selection of tipples varying from the fine and sought after to the downright eccentric. Here are a few to get you in the mood.

DRINKS

White Peak Distillery Gin - £36 – Derbyshire If you like a floral-style gin, this is for you. And it’s distilled locally in the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff.

Shivering Mountain Pink Gin – Hathersage - £40 The bottle is crafted to the shape of Mam Tor. "It brings back memories of walks in the Peak District with traditional juniper balanced beautifully with rich, juicy fruit flavours from bilberries and sloes and a smooth, long finish – a truly great gin…” Or so the blurb says. Strange, we never hit the G&Ts on my school trips to Derbyshire. We opted for a cup of hot chocolate while our socks dried on the radiator.

Frapin Cigar Blend XO Coganc 100% Grande Champagne Premier Cru De Coganc £110 This is more accurately an eau-de-vie than Cognac. Quite what the fruit adds (apart from taking up bottle space) is not explained in the accompanying information. It does however promise “the scent of wooden cigar boxes, typical of a Grande Champagne cognac”.

O’Donnell Sticky Toffee Moonshine £25 Made by passing through slowly melted sugar, this is one for the really sweet tooth.

Deadhead Monkey Chocolate Rum – £66.50 Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this charming little chap on display on their sitting room? The contents are a mixture of six-year cask-aged rum with roasted cacao beans. Just the thing to brighten up your Christmas morning.

Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur £25 A bit like Baileys. Only dearer.

Beluga Celebration Vodka £39.50 Beluga Celebration is a Limited Edition release dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Marinsk Distillery. The water used in its manufacture is apparently solely from 300m deep wells within Siberia. So it must make a difference.

Laphroaig Ian Hunter Chapter 3 – £975 This 33-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is the third in the exclusive series commemorating Ian Hunter. A vintage 1987 distillation, fully matured in refill ex-Bourbon barrels, heralding waves of aniseed, peaty and peppery notes, cedar, kumquat zest and gorse flower.

Blantons Original Bourbon - £70 Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Now it’s yours – for a price.

estled in the heart of the Peak District, at Chatsworth Estate, lies Peak Ales; selling premium craft beers and now award-winning gin from their most recent venture. Robert and Debra Evans are the proud owners of this local gem, which has expanded to include a new brewing venue in Ashford-in the-Water, allowing their initial location to be converted into a gin distillery and small plant for experimental batches. This beautiful location also provided a scenic opportunity for a visitors centre, offering tours (starting again in 2022) and the perfect place to sit down and enjoy a ‘simply magnificent pint!’ Risking it all to peruse their dream, this inspirational couple left their jobs in 2013 to set up the microbrewery, only to immediately outgrow the space and relocate in 2014 to meet demand. It’s a clear success story resulting in a local and authentic business that ‘offers a growing portfolio of traditional English styled beers in cask and bottle’. Robert is proud to provide a service to his customers with ‘products they wish to buy and a service they appreciate’. Read

N

on to hear about the story of Peak Ales and the successes of the Evans’ awardwinning products. How would you best describe Peak Ales?

Peak Ales is family business whose ethos is producing the best beer (and now gin) possible, consistently. We trust we are seen as making a positive contribution to the local community, adding to the local identity. Which beer was first and why?

You really are testing the memory now. If I remember correctly, it was Bakewell Best Bitter. As a new brewery entering the market, I was keen to produce beers that stood comparison with the best beers that were available. The fact that a local beer journalist described Bakewell Best Bitter as a “simply magnificent pint” was very rewarding and gave me confidence that I was on the right track. Bakewell Best Bitter is still available and it’s made to the original recipe. Who would change a magnificent pint? Tell us about the products you offer,

which is your personal favourite?

My glib response is that you cannot expect me to choose between my children! That said, I enjoy all the beers we brew and it really does depend on circumstance and a sensible assessment of the ABV! Chatsworth Gold is very popular and it has won many awards for the brewery so it can make a strong claim to being my favourite. Which products have received awards and tell us about your first.

I do know that Peak Ales IPA is our most recent winner, it received a Gold Medal in the World Beer Trophy Awards held in Luxembourg in September 2021. The brewers didn’t even know it had been entered so it was a nice surprise for them when the results were announced. What made you decide on the gin venture and how has it gone so far?

In October 2014 we moved the main beer production to a new brewery at Ashford-in the-Water. I thought we could develop the original site into a visitor centre. During this time I was made aware that the Duke of Devonshire

FEATURE

had enquired about the possibility of an estate gin and I let it be known that we could incorporate a small gin production facility into the redeveloped site. The still is called Isobel and produces small batches of between 90-100 bottles of gin each time. Which gins have you expanded to include?

We launched Chatsworth Gin at the Chatsworth Country Fair, 2019. Working with the team at the Chatsworth Farm Shop and Lady Burlington we recently developed a gin using roses from the Chatsworth garden - Chatsworth Rose Pink Gin- was released to market this September. It won a silver medal in the World Gin Awards (London Dry Gin, England-Category) What ideas have tried in your pilot brewery?

The small plant at the Visitor Centre is used for experimental or small batch brews. Recently this allowed our Head Brewer, Thom Bettney, to develop a range of more craft focused beers under the “Off Peak” brand before committing

to a full 20 barrels. Most recently the pilot plant was used to brew an American Pale Ale (APA) that quickly sold out. What efforts do you make to be environmentally friendly?

I think it’s everyone’s responsibility not to waste resources. We are careful with our water use and waste water is sent to drain via a resettlement tank so virtually all suspended solids are retained and collected separately and properly treated before being disposed of. We use CHEP pallets that are multiple use. Our major waste product is spent grains that is collected by a local farmer and used as animal feed and a small amount is reused by a local mushroom grower! Casks are a very environmentally friendly means of distribution and are used hundreds of times over their lifespan. Tell us about other services you provide.

Unfortunately, the Visitor Centre has been closed recently and is unlikely to reopen until spring next year. However, when open visitors will be able to book

on to a brewery tour to be shown around the equipment and have the brewing process explained. They can then sample different beers in the bar and purchase bottles to take away. If people do not have time for a guided tour there are displays and hand-outs that describe the process and all the equipment can be seen through large viewing windows, likewise for the gin. It’s a lovely place to just sit and chill and enjoy a drink. In normal times the Visitor Centre can be hired for events and it will be great to bring these social gatherings back to the barn. Lastly, has it been worth the risk?

Until very recently I would have had no hesitation answering this question but the last 18 or so months have been extraordinarily stressful. Surviving Covid lockdown when so much of one’s established trade is removed has been our greatest challenge and I am proud of all our staff that have ensured that Peak Ales is still here and trading robustly. Howzat! Holmesfield Cricket Club has raised more than £3,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. The Stuart Huckerby Memorial Cricket Match was played in memory of club member Stuart, who died earlier this year. Along with Club President Tom Pearson, Stuart had inspired and encouraged young players to take up the game, many of whom still play and recently finished the cricket season by taking the club into the Derbyshire County Cricket League - Second Division. Covid restrictions meant that Stuart’s family couldn’t give him the send off they would have liked following his death in March so the cricket match was an opportunity for everybody who knew and loved him to raise a glass, share anecdotes and stories and enjoy a match which raised a total of £3,091 for St Luke’s Hospice, where Stuart was a patient. “We are so pleased that Stuart’s family and friends were able to give him the tribute he deserved,” said St Luke’s Senior Fundraising Manager Clare Collingworth. “Not only did they have a great time but they also raised a great amount for us, money that will help us to continue providing our services for all the people of Sheffield and their families.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 49
