Big night out

ello and welcome to the September issue of Southside. The Peak District is home to many great things, including cottage industries that make the best of their environment. Quarrying stone from the adjacent Stoke Hall Quarry, Stoke Stoneworks are bringing fine golden buff gritstone to homes and gardens around the region in the shape of bricks, blocks, paving, fireplaces and much more. We find out more about this new enterprise. Sticking to a homes theme we look at local businesses and services who can assist with any renovation project and look at workspaces that are stylish yet practical. There’s also your usual mix of motoring, fashion, beauty and more.

AWARDS

A night to remember THE PREPARATION FOR THE 2021 WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE RESTAURANT AND BAR AWARDS HAS BEGUN – AND WE HAVE A BRAND NEW VENUE.

he OEC is the new home for the 2021 Westside & Southside Restaurant and Bar Awards. We are delighted that this year’s event will take place at Sheffield’s newest dining and events venue on the evening of Monday 8 November. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – nestles snugly between Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Stadium on Penistone Road. It’s a new, ultra-modern and exciting venue with a 500seater capacity, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! Now we’ve found the perfect venue, the search is really hotting up for the finest dining and drinking establishments across Sheffield and North Derbyshire, as we look forward to the 2021 Westside & Southside Restaurant and Bar Awards. If you’d like to treat your team after such a difficult year, allow us to recognise your hard work and efforts at a celebratory evening with food, drink and entertainment. We too had to take a break last year but the awards are back – and who will come out on top? EATING OUT

Tried and tasted DUNSTON HALL GARDEN CENTRE IS ALSO HOME TO A STUNNING BISTRO, WRITES SAM PEGG. estled in the most beautiful countryside sits a quaint garden centre and bistro ready to reveal all it has to offer. You can eat with a beautiful view as you look out over the surrounding greenery. I can’t think of a more perfect combination than delicious food, flowers and plants aplenty and miles of scenery. As soon as you walk into Dunston Hall Garden Centre you enter into a paradise of decor, gifts and the fresh smell of nature. Winding around each aisle with a rumbling excitement in my stomach, I approached the bistro and was immediately greeted by friendly staff waiting to provide excellent service for their customers. Promising indoor and outdoor seating there is always a table to suit your desires. With a stylish and comfortable interior and an exterior with stunning views you’re almost stuck for choice. After being shown to a wooden gazebo outside, we were instantly provided with water for the table and had our drink requests taken. There is a generous menu of a choice of drinks both alcoholic and soft to accompany your meal to come. It has to be said that the waiters and waitresses had a lovely demeanour, were attentive and made the experience welcoming and enjoyable. We were in

N

good hands and it was clear that they would cater for our needs. The bistro has a breakfast, lunchtime and evening menu with a variety of perfectly chosen meals. I would definitely recommend for you to check out the evening menu served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 5-8pm. Sit in the peace of the evening as the sun starts to set over the trees in the distance whilst enjoying great food. After looking at the menu we chose to have the Dunston Steak Burger with twice cooked chips and the Dunston Fish and Chips. As stated on the menu their ethos is to only use the best local suppliers to ensure their customers receive the best, freshly cooked dishes. Fruit and veg is supplied by Winster Foods,The Bakewell Bakery bring breads and treats, meat comes from Highfield House, fish from The Gentleman Fishmonger and dairy from Woodthorpe Grange. The menu also caters for those who are gluten free, vegan and vegetarian. When the food arrived it was very well presented and cooked to perfection. The Dunston Fish and Chips was buttery, light and very fresh. An accompaniment of curry sauce, tartare sauce and mushy peas were all fresh and full of flavour. The Dunston Steak

Burger was very balanced yet rich in flavour. The twice cooked chips were delicate and delicious. Each mouthful was incredibly flavoursome. For dessert there was an array of cakes to choose from. The Warm Chocolate Brownie with raspberry gel, frozen raspberries and vanilla ice cream took my fancy. It arrived with great attention to detail and looked beautiful. Similar to the rest of the meal it was full of flavour and was a great end to a lovely meal. A visit to Dunston Hall Garden Centre & Bistro is well worth a scenic drive, to not only stop by for a walk around the plants but to also enjoy a delicious meal in the bistro. Booking is essential any time of day to ensure you don’t miss out on this fabulous dining experience. Bamfords The British people have over the last year and a half spent more time in their own homes and surrounding countryside than at any other time in our recent history. What is for many a newly found love of the home and the English landscape has been reflected in the boom in the traditional art market. Bamfords’ last four major sales have each broken records for auction totals and number of lots sold. Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA (1803-1902) has long been recognised for his depictions of cattle and sheep resting and grazing amongst the meadows of England. A great example of his work dated 1864, previously at the Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, found a new home in the countryside of Oxfordshire. Sidney Cooper’s works often have two, three of four sheep or cows. This massive example left us counting sheep with an incredible 98 resulting in a sale price of £27,000. The portrait that generated the most interest encouraging bidders from Europe, Asia and the Americas and had been in the family home at Casterne Hall for several generations was in the circle of Francis Hayman and depicted Peg Waffington as the character of Rosalind from ‘As You Like It’. Undoubtedly the Shakespeare association helped it to achieve just over £5,000. If you would like to contact James Lewis or any of the team at Bamfords for valuation or auction advice do not hesitate to contact us on 01629 730920.

f you are thinking about having some building work done, well, good luck. Such has been the demand for extensions, conversions and transformations over the last 18 months that most construction companies are booked up certainly this year and the majority of next. But you can use this time to your advantage, particularly if you’re undecided on those finishing touches that can make all the difference. Depending on your type of property, natural stone can add the real wow factor, whether it’s used as a substitute for traditional brickwork, a patio or a boundary wall. But before you start trawling the world wide web to find the types of natural stone on offer (and prices), you can look much closer to home.

The Peak District is famous for the many things – dense woodlands, lush moorlands, rushing rivers and some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll find not just in the country, but in the world. If you’ve stood at the top of Mam Tor you’ll know what I mean. The landscape is made up of impressive gritstone edges, steep limestone dales and rolling hills and farmland, many of which are home to some fabulous cottage industries. One such business is Stoke Stoneworks, a relatively new enterprise that utilise their surroundings to produce stunning natural stone works largely used in the construction industry. The Grindleford-based company occupies a site adjacent to Stoke Hall Quarry and is run by two families – the

Nicholsons and Haywoods. Although the site has produced stone for the area over the last 200 years it had sat dormant for three years and presented the perfect opportunity for directors John Nicholson and Tom Haywood to join forces and start producing natural stone products once again. The fine golden buff gritstone quarried from the site has been used in the past on prominent buildings from the Peace Gardens and Winter Gardens in Sheffield to the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Chatsworth House, Sheffield Town Hall, Ladybower Dam, National Mining Head Office, Duke of Edinburgh Estate, Bradford Centenary Square, Dewar Place and many more. The huge blocks of stone – some reaching eight tonnes in weight – are

037 SSide Sep21 11/08/2021 17:29 Page 1

brought down from the quarry where they can be sawn into slabs in a matter of a few hours. The smaller blocks are then broken down further before they are worked on by a specialist masonry team. It’s an impressive process. Some of the saws reach almost three metres in diameter, which is impressive in itself, and it’s amazing to see these huge slabs become smooth blocks, detailed fireplaces or rustic paving slabs. Having the stone on site has huge environmental benefits too, as John’s son Harry, who also works for the company, explains: “Stoke Hall Quarry is adjoined to our works making the carbon footprint virtually zero, making the stone a sustainable product.” Stoke Stoneworks, now trading for just over a year, work throughout Sheffield,

the Peak District and surrounding areas and supply dimensional natural stone, masonry, and walling stone, and includes coping and paving, heads, sills and jambs, quoins, arches, fireplaces and hearths as well as gateposts. Their product range is literally endless and can be suited to almost all requirements, whether you’re building a stone wall, patio or a whole house. Although masonry and stonework is often considered a ‘traditional’ industry, John and Tom have introduced modern machinery and computer aided manufacture, which makes the cutting and finishing of stonework faster and more accurate. Ultimately this enables them to meet tighter schedules with the same expected quality. “We use a mixture of traditional and

modern techniques, but these techniques are becoming increasingly less labour intensive, faster and more efficient,“ says Harry. “Some traditional methods are still used where appropriate. We provide a high quality product, made to the highest standards in the industry.” The results certainly speak for themselves and the finished stone is simply stunning. The detail that goes into some of the stonework is incredible and is a credit to the masons at Stoke Stoneworks. If you’re looking for a natural stone finish to your house or garden, you can’t go far wrong with this fine golden buff gritstone, and you can get it from just down the road. No filler, all Weller NEVER ONE TO REST ON HIS LAURELS OR REPEAT HIMSELF, PAUL WELLER IS BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM AND TOUR. HE SPEAKS TO JULES BOYLE ABOUT FAT POP (VOLUME 1). here are not many artists who are still making vibrant and relevant music over four decades into their career, but Paul Weller has always done things differently. Since he first burst into the national consciousness with The Jam in 1977, up through The Style Council and beyond with his prolific solo endeavours, the 62 year-old Englishman has always been about one thing – moving forward. Never one to rest on his laurels or repeat himself, Weller somehow has managed to keep producing new material that holds its own with his ever-increasing back catalogue of classic albums while always exploring new ideas at the same time. It’s no surprise then, that he’s back with another new record that does just that, the incredible Fat Pop (Volume 1). His 16th solo album since his self-titled debut dropped way back in 1992, it comes less than a year after its predecessor, the equally astonishing On Sunset, which earned him his fifth

T

Number One album as a solo artist. It’s a typically diverse collection of songs, taking in influences and inspirations from across the board, but with every track sounding unmistakably like nobody else other than Paul Weller. As usual too, his quality control is as strong as ever too. There’s no waste on the album, no offcuts making up the runtime. No filler, all Weller in other words. Even by his standards, it’s been a quick turnaround since the last album but it’s a record he had already started planning that was just moved forward when lockdown kicked in last year. As far as he saw it, if you can’t get out and play music, what else is there to do than make some more? Looking back at the genesis of what became Fat Pop (Volume 1), Paul said: “Most things become more apparent when you’re working on a record, so I don’t think I had any masterplan for it, I just wanted to make a record as I was

facing a whole year or more of not doing anything, as all the live stuff had been cancelled obviously. The prospect of all that time off meant I was going to have to utilise my time in other ways, so I just put my time and energy into making a record. There was nothing particularly challenging in there though, just what are in my opinion, 12 really great songs.” The initial parts of the album were recorded remotely by Weller and his band - Steve Cradock, Ben Gordelier and Andy Crofts - with the musicians trading files from each of their respective homes and only came together at Paul’s Black Barn studio in Surrey when restrictions were lifted. It wasn’t an ideal way to do things, but they made it work. Paul said: “In the first bit of the lockdown, I was just recording my vocal and a guitar or piano to a click track, then I’d send that to the various band members who’d do their part and send it back to me, so there was a bit of to-ing

047 SSide Sep21 10/08/2021 14:55 Page 1

INTERVIEW

and fro-ing for a while, until we could all get together, It was very weird, I wouldn’t say it was completely enjoyable as little things kept coming back that we could have easily fixed if we were all together, but it did enable us to keep moving forward and stay working. Getting back together in person though, that was really special. I would say it was like the first day of school, but I hated school, so it was more like the last day, just a real f***ing joy. Just having us all back in the same room again, having a bit of banter and playing some music together. We’d really missed it; we’d missed each other, and we’d missed playing together.” A new Weller album isn’t ever something you can predict what it’s going to sound like, which is just how he likes it. He makes music that interests him and that he wants to be proud to let people hear. With a back catalogue and reputation like his, he could easily go down the heritage act route if he wanted to and just churn out the hits for the rest of his life, but that’s just not how he’s wired. Paul said: “I just wanted every song to be strong on its own, like each one could be a single. I’m always just trying to keep my own interest and not repeat myself, which when you have been recording music as long as I have, can be difficult. In fact, it’s next to impossible to always come up with something different, but I’m always conscious of trying to reach somewhere else or get to some other place with it. So, for me, having two or three moments on each record that I’ve managed to do that, then it’s successful for me. “I couldn’t do that heritage route easily, not with any sort of conviction at all. I’m just not cut out for that sort of thing. I’ve always been more interested in what I’m doing at the time and what I’m doing next and that goes right back to The Jam days, you know? My attitude has always been ‘Well that was a good record, let’s crack on with the next one and try and make something a bit different.’ That’s always been in me, but I think the older I get, the less cautious I am about trying different things or seeing what works. There was a similar ethos in The Style Council, I just don’t think I had the chops to bring it off successfully at times, either vocally or as a musician. It’s just the passage of time, really. “I’ve always felt comfortable about making new stuff though, if that’s what

I’m into at the time, then that’s what I want people to hear. That’s what I want to play to you, so that’s what I do. Saying that, there’s also loads of old songs that I play live, whether it’s the ones that people want to hear, I don’t know. People want all different things, but I do try to cover most points in my history, but the new record will always be the most important thing to me. Unless it’s a piece of sh*t, then I wouldn’t care, but if that was the case I wouldn’t be out there doing it anyway. If I believe in something though, I want people to hear it.”

Fat Pop (Volume 1) features some stellar guest collaborations, such as Amen Corner legend Andy Fairweather Low on the strutting groove that is Testify and Paul’s own daughter Leah, who co-wrote and performed on Shades Of Blue, the classic slice of three-minute kitchen sink pop that was the first single released off the album. Away from his recorded output, Weller has been a constant presence on the live circuit all these years, but his usually relentless touring schedule ground to a halt last year along with the entire live music industry. Naturally his first concern was people’s lives and health, but not being able to do the thing that he has spent his entire adult life doing (and loving) took a bit of getting used to. He said: “It’s really, really weird. It’s the longest I’ve gone without playing live since I started making music. We’re hopefully doing this tour in November, which has been rescheduled several times already, which will make it nearly twoand-a-half years since we’ve played live. That’s an awful long time to be off.” For the latest news on tour dates see www.paulweller.com

IN BRIEF

New partnership

Lord Mayor welcomes Graysons’ support for premier arts event Sheffield’s celebrated Art in the Gardens returns to the city’s Botanical Gardens once again this September with the backing of Graysons Solicitors. The city-based law firm returns as the premier sponsor of the event for the third year in a row and is pleased to be able to help bring some normality back to the arts world. Graysons has a keen interest in art. It’s also the sponsor of Sheffield Young Artists and regularly works with local artist Alan Pennington. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We’ve had the privilege of being involved in Art in the Gardens since 2019 and we’re looking forward to being present once again in September. It has been a very difficult year with further lockdowns and COVID-related restrictions and it’s a pleasure to be able to help stage such an important event in the city’s arts calendar.” Art in the Gardens takes place on Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 September, with a preview evening on Friday 3 September.

Business can play key role Commenting on the sixth assessment report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), East Midlands Chamber director of resources Lucy Robinson said: “Today’s report by the IPCC is a sobering reminder of how each and every one of us has a role to play in the fight against climate change, and this is particularly true of businesses – no matter what their shape, size or location. “The Chamber launched our Sustainable East Midlands campaign last year to help more organisations in our region embrace the sustainability agenda. “The good news is we are moving in the right direction. We still need to do more though, particularly in supporting SMEs to adopt a sustainable growth strategy. While the latest IPCC research illustrates how reducing our carbon emissions is clearly the right thing to do if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change, there are also strong commercial benefits to adopting a greener and cleaner approach to doing business. “It will ultimately also make the East Midlands more competitive as a region, but it also plays into our strengths as we have all the pieces of the sustainability jigsaw – the high energy users in manufacturing, the energy producers in our coal field heritage, and new hi-tech businesses coming out of our world-leading universities.” For more information on the support available to East Midlands businesses in adopting sustainable practices, visit www.emc-dnl.co.uk/sustainability.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Cricket Club have agreed a deal which will see the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket continue for at least the next five years. The popular Festival, which has seen multiple sold-out matches at Queen’s Park, is a cornerstone of the Derbyshire summer and the new agreement builds on the Club’s longstanding relationship with Chesterfield Borough Council. In recent years, the week-long Festival has played host to enthralling first-class matches, as well as the traditional Vitality Blast local derby with Yorkshire Vikings, and Derbyshire will continue to perform under the spire for the next five seasons. This year, the Club, alongside Chesterfield Borough Council, has also moved to bring live music to the venue, with the hugely popular Evening of Queen event taking place earlier this month attracting a new audience to Queen’s Park. Derbyshire County Cricket Club Chairman, Ian Morgan, said: “As a Club, we are committed to continuing our longstanding relationship with Queen’s Park and Chesterfield Borough Council. “The Chesterfield Festival of Cricket always brings together a huge number of people from across the region and Queen’s Park is a much-loved and popular venue, making the fixtures a highlight of the season for supporters from across the county. “After an extremely challenging time for the Club and its supporters, I was delighted to see Derbyshire return to Queen’s Park yesterday in front of our largest crowd of the summer and I look forward to seeing the Festival continue to progress over the coming seasons.”

Have your say Market traders, town centre retailers, residents and visitors are being encouraged to have their say on ambitious plans to revitalise Chesterfield Market by taking part in a public consultation. Chesterfield Borough Council is seeking people’s views on plans to create a vibrant open-air shopping experience with new event space, seating, and landscaping – to help shape the council’s final proposals for Chesterfield Market. The draft Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield Vision Master Plan aims to ensure the market area remains a modern shopping destination, despite the challenges posed by a rise in online shopping and, more recently, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “We recognise the need to invest now to make sure Chesterfield town centre remains modern, vibrant, and relevant – and our market is a key part of that. “These ambitious plans lay down a new vision for Chesterfield Market and are based on what market traders, town centre retailers and residents told us they wanted to see when we asked for initial feedback on the project.” You have until 12 September to have your say. www.sheffieldvibe.com 49
