WELCOME
WELCOME TO VIBE QUARTERLY...
If you’re one of the thousands of visitors to our website, VIBE, this magazine might look a little familiar. Our new quarterly print edition will be popping up in bars, restaurants, shops, barbers and apartments over the coming weeks. You’ll find the following pages divided up in the same way as our online edition – Food & Drink, Watch, Listen, Do and Movers & Makers. As we’re launching at the upcoming A Taste of Independent Sheffield festival, we take a close look at what’s in store, plus look at the growing food halls trend and why the Antiques Quarter of the city is becmoing a real foodie destination. We also speak to Make No Bones co-owner Dave Shaw, who has found a new home in Oli Sykes’ latest venture, The Church – Temple of Fun. It’s another addition to a booming part of town. If you’re looking for laughs in the coming months, Sara Pascoe will be making an appearance at Sheffield City Hall. She also has a new book out – Sex Power Money – and talks to us about why she chose to write about porn and sex work from a historical and evolutionary perspective. As you do. Musically, we caught up with disco trio, Patawawa. Beth, Rory and Sam went down an absolute storm at Tramlines earlier this year and are now heading out on a nationwide tour as well as launching a new single and EP. They’re at Yellow Arch Studios in October – it’s a show not to be missed. Elsewhere, we look at the upcoming Sensoria and Off The Shelf festivals, speak to Sheffield actress Genesia Kalsi and have a look at what our larger-than-life Lord Mayor, Magid Magid, has been up to. We hope you love the new look and new format and look forward to interacting with you over the coming months @VIBE_Sheffield. Richard Abbey Editor

Grab a table SHEFFIELD’S FOOD OFFERING IT ABOUT TO GET BIGGER AND MUCH MORE VARIED. RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT A NEW WAY OF DINING OUT IN THE CITY. hey’ve been a fixture in Europe for years now, but it looks like food halls are finally catching on in this country too, and especially outside the capital. The Greater Manchester area has seen the likes of Altrincham Market Hall and Mackie Mayor open with success and Sheffield could soon be getting a slice of the action with not one but two (even possibly three or more) food halls launching in the coming months. So what can we expect? Well, think high quality communal dining in buzzing environments with an unvrivalled selection of food and drink. Sounds good? It’s making us hungry just thinking about it.
Housed in a former works on Neepsend Lane (just round the corner from The Church) and slated for a late October opening is The Cutlery Works, an ambitious two-storey, 14 restaurant independent destination from The Milestone Group. They’ve already announced the first few vendors that will be housed in the stunning venue and it makes for pretty interesting reading. First up is Gravy Train – you’ll know them from Peddler – who’ll be bringing their speciality poutine to the party. Vietnamese coffee shop Five Rivers will offer coffee and bahn mi and staying in Asia, Edo Sushi will take care of Japanese tastes whilst Indian Ma Ba will tickle your tastebuds

The Cutlery Works will be housed in a former works on Neepsend Lane (above). Vendors will include (below, from top) Shed and Elly Joy with their South Indian-flavoured food. Vegan options will come from Shed as well as the ever-popular Elly Joy, who along with her signature froconut desserts, will also be branching out into savoury options. For the meat and fish-eaters there will be Fin and Bone – another brand new start-up –and if you just fancy a good pie, Pie Eyed will be in the house. Last but not least is bean to bar chocolatiers Bullion. “The selection is, as food halls should be, from across the world,” explains The Milestone Group’s Matt Bigland. “There’s something for everyone and each person is a specialist at what they do. “These guys are all super keen, and not only are they executing amazing food, they’re business savvy entrepreneurs who have such passion and drive for it. A lot of them have never previously had their own bricks and mortar business, and this is their first steps into getting their own restaurant.” Meanwhile across the city, Kollider Projects are already having a big influence on the transformation of Castle House into a creative/tech hub. They are adding a further string to their bow by joining forces with the people behind Peddler, Tamper and Depot Bakery to create a 16,000 square foot food hall on the upper ground floor of the former Co-op department store. Called Kollider Social, the Scandi-style space will house several street food-inspired independent food vendors, a bar, an area for private dining and a social work and event space. It will open its doors early every morning to the aromas of Tamper’s coffee and Depot Bakery’s freshly-baked croissants from late autumn. Jonathan Perry, Tamper owner, said: “For my part, I feel that Sheffield misses out on some of the great food experiences available in other cities both here in the UK and overseas. Kollider Social is an opportunity to redress this and transform part of this amazing building into a dynamic environment for food, creativity and connection.” It’s still a long way off, but the new Heart of the City II project are also proposing to include a food hall in the new development. By the time that comes to fruition, Sheffielders will be well versed to canteen-style dining. We can’t wait to give them all a try.

Hop to it FROM BEER AFICIONADO TO PODCAST STAR, THERE’S NO END TO SEAN CLARKE’S BEERY TALENTS... eptember is such a great month for beer. But of course so is February; April is decent too; there’s always great beers around in July as well… yep, you guessed it, EVERY month’s a winner for beer! There’s a slight shift for this month’s column in that I’m not going to recommend any specific beers to drink, instead we’re going to take a look at something I’ve been involved in for a few months now and I think you might enjoy it. Earlier this year, two of our customers (James Marriott and Adam Nicholson) approached me about being involved in a beer podcast, a recorded discussion about beer for people to listen to online. Me? Talk about beer? Drink beer and talk about it? Of course I said yes! So we got our little gang together, met at The Bar Stewards, and for nearly two hours we talked about beer – Sheffield Hopcast was born! Remarkably, people listened to our beery ramblings and gave us great feedback, and so the snowball began to roll. Here’s a lowdown of what Sheffield Hopcast is all about and we’ll leave it to Adam to make it clearer than I ever could. “James and I (Adam) formed the podcast based on a mutual love for drinking beer, talking about beer and podcasting. With Sheffield being a big beer city, we thought it would make a great format to introduce people to great beer in Sheffield, as well as keeping those already in the know informed about what’s
happening in Sheffield’s many breweries, pubs and bars. “We are both thrilled with our regular panel of Sean and Laura (Mashtun & Meow blogger and member of the Abbeydale Brewery workforce) and now nearly ten months into the project, we couldn’t imagine it without them. “Our growing listenership has meant in the last few months we’ve been able to expand to a second monthly release in the form of “The Hopcast-Halfpint” as well as a bonus Peakender special too, it’s been great to see our idea develop into useful part of the Sheffield and UK beer scene” I’ve got to say that the four of us have a very enjoyable rapport and it’s been a pleasure to be involved in every episode so far, I absolutely love it, but I’m not the only one; here’s what Laura had to say about being involved: “For me the Sheffield Hopcast sums up everything that I love about beer in our city and is something I’m truly proud to be a part of. We aim to make chatting about beer accessible, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we geek out only occasionally and we get to drink some absolutely BRILLIANT stuff, all while we have a good laugh in doing so. Cheers!” I can’t say it any better than that!

Listen to Sheffield Hopcast now online at www.sheffieldhopcast.co.uk and feel free to follow our beery adventures via Twitter (@SheffHopcast) or Facebook (Sheffield Hopcast), hope you enjoy it.

YOU’LL FIND THEM AT THE UPCOMING TASTE OF INDEPENDENT SHEFFIELD FESTIVAL AND MANY MORE PLACES BESIDES. MEET SUNSHINE PIZZA OVEN.
Who are you and what is your business? We are the Sunshine Pizza Oven and we make wood-fired pizza, made with 100 per cent organic dough and sauce. We are based in the Hope Valley just outside Sheffield and work mainly in the Peak District and Sheffield.
Heeley Festival and some lovely events in the Botanical Gardens, not to mention the brand new Taste of Independent Sheffield. Outside Sheffield, the quirky Pots and Food Festival at Wardlow Mires or the Northern Green Gathering in the Peak District have got to be at the top of our list.
What is your USP? Since we started, three-and-a-half years ago, we have always used organic tomatoes for our sauce and organic, stoneground flour for our slow-proved dough, which is hand-stretched and cooked in about 60 seconds in our beautiful orange wood-fired ovens. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Why should VIBE readers use Sunshine Pizza oven? Because we make fantastic pizzas. We’re frequently found in Sheffield; for example, the last Friday of every month we’re at the Dorothy Pax, an amazing new bar at Victoria Quays. Or you could always pop out and see us one evening in the Hope Valley. We cater for everyone. We make delicious veggie pizzas using locally-sourced veg and herbs where possible – we use suppliers from Sheffield and the surrounding area, such as the Sheffield food cooperative Lembas, Worsbrough Mill near Barnsley and Riverside Herbs in Hathersage – and have a high quality selection of continental meats for the carnivores. We also use great vegan cheese and have gluten-free bases available. All served to you by our fabulous team of pizzamakers.
Which pizza is your personal favourite? Our favourites change a lot, but you can’t beat a good Margherita with fresh basil and fior di latte mozzarella, or even a Marinara with tomato sauce, garlic, fresh herbs and no cheese. Most memorable event? There are too many to mention, every week brings new adventures and interesting, new folk at the stall. We attend some great events in Sheffield, including Peace in the Park, the Folk Forest during Tramlines, Rite Trax on the Bole Hills,
We make pizza, baked in our mobile wood-fired pizza oven, at locations and events in and around Sheffield and the Peak District. We believe in real food, and make everything by hand using fresh, high quality ingredients – organic and locally sourced where possible.
Look out for us! You’ll find us at regular pitches throughout the Hope Valley and beyond – Bamford, and Hathersage!! For info or bookings call us on: 07825

ith the likes of The Broadfield, Picture House Social and The Tramshed, beery offerings are well catered for in the developing area of Abbeydale Road/Chesterfield Road, which is just a short bus ride from the city centre. But there is much more to these two main thoroughfares, as we discovered.

When it comes to self-promotion, they’re some of the best around. Want a Reyt Good CurrehTM? Thanks to their quirky, clever, and often funny, advertising campaigns, it’s the first place that springs to mind. Having been open for just over 50 years – they’re proudly one of the city’s oldest curry houses – this is a restaurant that moves with the times and has made great strides under the ownership of Rahul Amin. Whether it’s in books, magazines or on social media, Ashoka embraces its Sheffieldness to the full – even trademarking the names of some of its dishes. But, above all, serve up some of the best Indian food in the city. There’s definitely substance behind all that style. The interior is cosy and contemporary – think Rajasthani railway meets cool café – but doesn’t feel at all cramped. If we were expecting a quiet Monday night, we were quickly proved wrong as the restaurant was packed. It seems, even despite the heatwave, the good folk of Sheffield can’t get enough curreh™. As we nibbled on some poppadoms, with glasses of Cobra (£6) and Abbeydale Heathen (£4.50) in hand, we took our cues from Rahul who recommended we try some smaller portions of a handful of dishes – who were we to argue? It was a great opportunity to try something different and sample dishes that perhaps we wouldn’t have normally chosen. Starters of black pepper prawn puri (£6) – light and delicate; and mustard pepper lamb chops (£6.50) – tender and punchy; kicked off proceedings before a veritable feast of main courses. Rahul described the Wedding Day Chicken Curry™ (£12.50) as the ‘staff curry’; it’s what they tend to eat at the end of a shift and you can see why. Cooked on the bone, the chicken was deliciously tender, coated in a flavoursome, moreish sauce mopped up with chunks of garlic naan bread (£3). Delicious. Elsewhere, a lamb Karamelised Kashmiri™ (£12.50) had a
jammy fruitiness that contrasted well to the spice kick from a classic chicken Kalcutta Karai™ (£11.50), whilst ginger brinjal (£10) – baby vine aubergines with fresh ginger – had real depth and garlic palak (£4.50) – fresh spinach leaves with chunky garlic – added further texture and flavour. The best thing, for me, was that you could taste the difference between all of them. The subtleness of the use of different spices was superb. Service throughout the evening was excellent and little things like the expanding hot towels and complimentary ParleG biscuits all added to the relaxed, enjoyable, and ultimately tasty, experience. Verdict: Reyt good.

Lighter touch THE MULTI-TALENTED SARA PASCOE ARRIVES IN SHEFFIELD WITH A BRAND NEW TOUR – WITH A NEW BOOK TO FOLLOW. SHE SPEAKS TO HANNAH SANDERS. ara Pascoe is not only an award-winning stand-up comedian, but author, actress, singer and playwright. And her newest tour, LadsLadsLads, is one of her most honest, personal and heartfelt shows promising to be full of laughter and the occasional tear. Here, she talks about the upcoming tour, her new book ‘Sex Power Money’ out next spring and career highlights.
you’re getting paid to do it. But there are huge things going on in the world and sometimes you feel a responsibility because you’ve a mic in your hand. Now my responsible side about the state of the world goes into book writing and stand-up has become a distraction from that.
S
Tell us about your recent Radio 4 series Modern Monkey. I wish it had been more scientific and I could’ve done more research but I kept being reminded it was supposed to be a comedy show and I had to write jokes. We recorded the show at several museums and I was so interested in everything I was learning about, especially the Foundling Museum.
Tell us about your show LadsLadsLads. It’s sometimes hard to summarise what a show is about. I wanted to give people the sense that it is fun and celebratory. It’s about having fun, trying new things in a way of being braver and more self-reliant. Some of my shows in the past have had serious aspects, theories and research but this one is lighter. It’s like a party, except only I get to talk and you have to sit there watching me.
Do you think the world of comedy has changed much since you started? I think audiences are changing and that directly influences the acts. Comedy used to be a crueller place, and while there is still lots of that kind of stuff (and lots of people who love it) there is a lot more diversity now. I hope that continues. Live comedy is flourishing within an economic downturn and that’s because the people making jokes are from a much wider spectrum. Their experiences are fresh and exciting and audiences want that. It’s not the individual cis, white, able-bodied man’s fault that historically, comedy clubs were so reliant on stereotype and tropes, but only one type of person’s reality was being reflected and I’m glad that’s improving.
How do you feel going back out on tour? I love going on tour. I love our nation, I love rainy days up north and cold evenings by the seaside. It’s a luxury to get to travel for one’s job and it’s still a novelty for me. Do you see the show developing throughout the tour? As my comedy is personal there are always updates, this show develops with recent escapades – my friends can persuade me to do anything by saying “you’ll get five minutes out of it”. Tell us about your new book Sex Power Money. It’s about porn and sex work from a historical and evolutionary perspective. I am taking biology and the plasticity of human sexuality into account, and also laying out the whole spectrum of arguments in the debate about these aspects of our society. I’m also trying to explore power dynamics in sexual exchanges which are not as clearly defined as paying for sex – things like men paying for dinner, the abuse by powerful, rich men such as Weinstein and Trump – but with jokes like my last book, Animal. I’m talking about serious, important stuff, but keeping it accessible and stimulating rather than hectoring.
What’s one of your career highlights? Getting to write books is a massive privilege. Whenever I do a book signing, that for me is a “pinch myself” moment. Also selling out a West End run – those theatres are an absolute joy to play and it felt like a victory lap. I felt so much love for every person in the audience and wanted to kiss and hug everyone. I am a failed actor, didn’t get into drama school all of that malarkey, so getting to be in the West End was so special to me. What’s next for you following the tour? I’d like to do some stand-up in America, and hopefully do some writing for TV. And another play, and I want to get a dog, and then more adventures so I can write another show.
Did the experience of writing a book change the way you approach comedy? Writing a book has changed my stand-up, I think I’m funnier now because I can spend more time with ideas for the books, after a day’s writing doing a gig is a release. I only want to be silly, and it doesn’t feel as selfish if that makes sense? Comedy feels like a child’s job, you can’t believe

The dancefloor is calling... GET READY TO THROW SOME SHAPES... WE CATCH UP WITH NEW DISCO DONS PATAWAWA. hey’re the DIY disco trio that lit up the Saturday afternoon at Tramlines and now Patawawa are back in Sheffield, finishing a ten-date tour at Yellow Arch Studios. It’s been a whirlwind few months for Beth, Sam and Rory who have racked up numerous festival appearances, seen their single Patagonia pass the one million streams mark and drawn comparisons to the likes of early Two Door Cinema Club, Chic, Nile Rodgers and even Madonna. As well as the tour, a new single – Wires – is imminent and they have a new EP slated for December. How they found time to talk to us is anyone’s guess.
You’ve just finished a pretty hectic festival season, how did that go? Yeah it was amazing thank you! It’s been our best summer yet definitely, we were blessed with amazing weather as well, you literally couldn’t have asked for better, especially at Bestival and Tramlines.
T
Any stand-out moments/highlights? I think we would all agree playing The Big Top at Bestival was a special moment for us as we have always wanted to play that festival. Another one was Tramlines, we played the T’Other

stage and we had one of the best reactions we have ever had. Playing at 3pm we didn’t know what to expect but the tent properly filled out and it was extremely litty!
“We are SO excited to be releasing new music and we genuinely think we have some serious contenders for best tune.”
And now you’ve got a pretty big tour coming up, how have the preparations been going? We have been so busy recording our next EP and juggling promoting the tour it’s been pretty manic. We have spent an unhealthy amount of time on the merchandise; we have made special Patawawa Party bags containing personalised treats and a lucky dip when you can win all manner of Patawawa prizes. Finishing in Sheffield, at Yellow Arch, must be special? Yeah we literally cannot wait for that show! Tickets have nearly gone already as well which is crazy. Then because it’s the last night we can get turbo-lit with everyone afterwards. What can we expect? Lots of dancing, brand new tunes, smiles all round and hopefully some singalongs. Where does the name come from? It comes from a two dogs that have taken a liking to each other and the outcome was Patawawa (well to Rory anyway). Have you been working on new material? Yes loads!!! We have a single coming out next month which we are buzzing about and we will be dropping a brand new EP early December. We are SO excited to be releasing new music and we genuinely think we have some serious contenders for best tune. Will a Patawawa album been the soundtrack of next summer? The plan is to do an album next year which would be amazing but it’s so bloody crazy at the minute we will see if we have time. What are your influences? We all have so many different ones but we have a lot of old school disco influences like Chic, Sister Sledge, Heatwave, Earth, Wind and Fire and The Whispers and we have new music influences such as EKKAH, Parcels, Franc Moody, Kraak and Smaak etc. Anyone you’d love to work with? All of the artists above would be nice! Hit us up guys! Xoxox What’s the dream? The dream at the start was to go full time in the band and we have achieved that this year so we will have to slightly adapt. A few other ones would be to play Glastonbury and I would love to have a song in the top 40, that would be cool! What do you get up to in your down-time? I (Sam) love football, I support Sheffield United and watch and play most weeks and I also love discovering new music, I have my PATAWAWA’S PARTY Playlist on Spotify so follow it for all the freshest cuts (cheeky plug lol!). We all love music and spend a lot of time either recording or playing shows and just generally being cheeky.
Catch Patawawa at Yellow Arch Studios on 11 October.

WITH THEMES OF SUFFRAGE, SHELLEY AND THE CIRCUS, THIS YEAR’S OFF THE SHELF FESTIVAL LOOKS SET TO BE A REAL PAGE-TURNER. ne of the largest literary festivals in the UK returns to the city in October with over 130 events, talks and discussions. Running from 6-27 October at various locations around the city, Off The Shelf is curated by Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield. This year there will be three themes running throughout the festival – Suffragette 100, Frankenstein 200 and Circus 250. The Suffrage 100 theme has been curated by Dr Julie V Gottlieb, Reader in Modern History, University of Sheffield. She says: “The centenary of women’s (partial) suffrage in Britain gives us all a chance to celebrate milestones in women’s emancipation, rescue from the forgotten pioneers in the struggles for the vote and carve out a place for women at the heart of our civic culture. As we reflect on the first 100 years of women’s citizenship, we can set an ambitious equality agenda for the next 100 years.” The Frankenstein 200 theme has been curated by Professor Chris Wigginton, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Sheffield Hallam University. He adds: “Frankenstein 200 celebrates the bicentenary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s ground-breaking novel. We are delighted to be showcasing a wide range of events exploring the multitude of ways that Shelley’s classic has infused popular culture, and how her enduring myth continues to speak directly to contemporary anxieties around technology, science, gender and ‘the other’.” The festival opens on Saturday 6 October with a free event
on The Moor showcasing poetry and performance, followed on Sunday 7 October by a free afternoon of activities for younger visitors linked with the Circus! Show of Shows exhibition at Weston Park Museum. Other Circus 250 events include a performance and interview with Romany Romany about her book Spun into Gold – The Secret Life of a Female magician, and an opportunity to meet Rebecca Truman and hear more about her all women circus company during an illustrated talk about her book Aerialist. Elsewhere, Off The Shelf welcomes authors and academics talking about their life stories, opinions on current affairs, design, comedy, poetry, film screenings, cookery, everything Yorkshire, and world-famous adult and children’s fiction. They include: Orla Kiely, Gina Miller, Cathy Newman, Robert Peston, Evan Davies, Kamal Ahmed, Romesh Ranganathan, Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, Lucy Mangan, Kate Humble, Jamie Campbell (the inspiration for the smash hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Ruby Tandoh, Miranda Seymour, Richard Morris, Philip Hensher, Susan Calman, Alan Johnson and visiting American authors Jodi Picoult and Michael Connelly. The festival also provides the only opportunity outside London to meet the shortlisted authors for the Man Booker Prize. Artist Tom J Newell has created the artwork for this year’s brochure front cover. He will discuss his artwork at an event at Sheffield Institute of Arts on 15 October.

It’s a special event where each artist acts as opener in a different venue, then jumps into a waiting car which will speed them to the next location with each artist becoming the opener, middle act and headline in different locations. The order of which will remain a complete mystery to the audience. Flying high off the back of their stunning new album Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It, Sheffield’s purveyors of post/math-rock Rolo Tomassi also return for an intimate hometown show. For one night only, and to celebrate the release of their new EP, Autonomy, Drenge’s long-suffering robot companion DR3NG3, will curate an evening of cake, dancing and Robo-Karaoke entitled DR3-NG3’s Big Night Out. Dallas DJ/producer Textasy will perform a special DJ set at Bal Fashions. Taking inspiration from early Miami Bass tracks, his productions bounce between genres the likes of electro, breakbeat hardcore, acid and hip hop – using familiar samples from each respective genre to create extremely dance worthy tracks. Film screenings will include the world premiere of ‘Arada’, the Northern premiere screening of ‘Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records’, ‘Studio 54’, ‘Olancho’, ‘Barbara Rubin & The Exploding NY Underground’, ‘Walking in the Opposite Direction‘ and ‘Beautiful Things’. ‘Stop - Look – Listen’ is a very special Anim18 commission that will see animated public information films from across many decades visually mixed by DISCO_R DANCE (Dan Conway and Peter Rolliston). Heart of the matter THE REDEVELOPMENT OF SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE CONTINUES APACE. ith news that the first phase of the Heart of the City project is on target to handover to HSBC at the early part of next year, Sheffield City Counicl has unveiled new images, along with proposals for the next two blocks of the scheme. Officially referred to as Blocks B and C, but known better as Laycock House (below) and The Pepper Pot building (above) respectively, they are the next two blocks central to the Council’s reimagined plans for the area around Pinstone Street. Plans for the two sites are to enter a period of public consultation which will run until 28 September, ahead of planning applications being submitted in October. Designed by Leonard Design Architects, Heart of the City II hopes to significantly transform this area of the city centre into a dynamic mixed-use district, boasting premium retail brands, Grade A offices, contemporary residential space, high-end hotels and attractive public spaces. New leisure facilities will feature, alongside restaurants and a cutting-edge food courtyard.
Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “I am delighted to see the plans for the next stages of Heart of the City II come forward. The two blocks will transform the Pinstone Street retail scene and add more much-needed quality office and residential space at the same time. “The Council is keen to retain as much of the city’s heritage as possible throughout this project. We have worked hard to see the retention of the Pinstone Street frontage whilst delivering new transformational development for the area. “The public consultation phase is a very important step and we are keen to know the thoughts of Sheffield residents and local businesses, so we will then be able to incorporate these ideas and comments in our final planning applications.” By keeping to the existing street patterns, the scheme will help integrate with existing shopping districts such as The Moor, Fargate and the Devonshire Quarter, and crucially, see John Lewis remain in its existing location on Barker’s Pool.

Hive of industry IT’S FUN, FUNKY AND FULL OF GREAT PLACES TO VISIT. HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD HEAD DOWN TO THE ‘ISLAND, LIKE NOW. f there’s an area in the city getting more attention that this little stretch of urban chic then I don’t think I’ve discovered it. There’s so much going on here – from new housing developments to new bars, restaurants and event spaces – it’s hard to keep up. And it’s only a short walk or tram ride from the city centre. Here’s a few suggestions to the places you should be seeking out.
ake No Bones – run by Dave Shaw and Lauren Hird – started life around five years ago as a pop-up event at a pub Dave was working in at the time. Such was it’s popularity that they progressed to events before saving up enough cash to open a café on Chesterfield Road in 2016. Such has been their reputation for delicious vegan and vegetarian food in the city that they were the go-to people for Oli Sykes who wanted them to run the kitchen at his latest venture, The Church – Temple of Fun. It’s a stunning space in a converted workshop on the edge of Kelham Island/Neepsend and currently houses Oli’s Drop Dead Clothing brand as well as a bar (all vegan), kitchen, retro arcade games, Xbox booths and a tattooist, which is due to open soon. Live music and events are slowly being added to the roster but it’s already been a hectic few opening months for the team who have been blown away by the reaction to this oasis of urban cool. “We expected to have the honeymoon period of a month and then it would calm down but it’s literally been busy every week,” enthuses Dave, who has found the move from Chesterfield Road to be a real eye-opener. “We were really

The Church – Temple of Fun Osborn Works – a building designed by famed Victorian architect William John Hale who was responsible for some of Sheffield’s most iconic religious buildings – has been lovingly restored into the region’s first ‘barcade’. The brainchild of Oli Sykes, it’s the new home of his Drop Dead retail outlet in the city and also where you’ll find a kitchen run by the renowned Make No Bones. It’s 100 per cent plant-based. 4a Rutland Way, Sheffield, S3 8DG templeof.fun

Piña This Mexican-themed bar has been an instant hit with the Kelham cogniscenti – and with good reason. Naturally there’s plenty of tequila on the bar, mezcal and the odd bottle of Pacifico Clara as well as their own draught Piña lager. You’ll need plenty of the latter to wash down the abundant tacos – meat and veggie/vegan – on offer, as well as tempting bar snacks including ceviche, almejas – beer-steamed clams, and churros.

The Old Workshop It’s seen as the elder statesmen as it’s what’s seen as a growing area of the island – but TOW has only been open for just over a year. That shows the impression they’ve made already. There’s craft beers, wines, spirits and light bites from a very Barcelona-esque kitchen. Late licence too. 10 Hicks Street, Sheffield, S3 8BL
Peddler Market The Burton Road venue is part of the fabric of the area now. The monthly food event – held the first weekend of the month – draws huge crowds who are keen to sample fine street food, DJs and occasional live music. There’s been a move to veggie/vegan only events of late, which have proved equally popular. 92 Burton Road, Sheffield, S3 8BX peddlermarket.co.uk
worried moving here after working on our own for pretty much five years but everyone’s really nice, there’s no ego at all.” The biggest challenge faced by The Make No Bones team was the increase in cooking – they’ve gone from 20 seats at the café to around 120 seats at The Church – but things have been going so well they’re already talking about expanding the kitchen. “It’s a lot more work than we had before but it’s going really well,” says Dave. “There were four of us at the old place and there’s 11 of us now, eight full-time, plus me, my partner Lauren and by business partner Adam. Adam’s not quite full-time yet but me and Lauren are over full-time.” Their plant-based menu is complemented by the completely vegan bar, and – we can concur – is pretty darned good. “We try and do a mixture of healthy stuff and not-so healthy stuff and things that are a bit more inclusive so it brings people who wouldn’t normally try vegan food, to come and try our stuff,” explains Dave, who’s been vegan for over 20 years. “Although we did have someone complain because the chicken was undercooked, it was pink…” I’ll leave that one with you. Avocado wings and doner kebabs are proving the biggest hits at the minute and the team are already putting the finishing touches to a new menu, which will be launching soon, as well as a Christmas roast

dinner, although there’s one sticking point at present. “Yorkshire puddings,” says Dave. “They’re surprisingly difficult to get right. We’ve done 30 or 40 trials so far and none of them are quite right yet but we’re getting there. It’s the vegan egg replacer we’re trying to sort out; it’s trying to balance out the proteins and fats you get in eggs and work out how to replace that.” If Dave can get this cracked, I’m sure he’ll continue to be a happy man. The Church are serving up biblical levels of satisfaction and he’s happy to be part of it. He’s loving the area too. “I used to work at The Riverside six or so years ago and it’s a very different vibe round here now. It’s quite nice, everyone’s got a good attitude, it’s all quite relaxed and there’s enough custom for everyone.” Make No Bones serves food from 10am-9pm.

Big impression IT’S BEEN A WHIRLWIND FEW MONTHS FOR THE NEW LORD MAYOR OF SHEFFIELD. WE FIND OUT WHAT THE COOLEST DUDE IN TOWN HAS BEEN UP TO.
ince he took office in May of this year it seems Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid has never been out of the news. Whether he’s putting down Donald Trump, joining the Everly Pregnant Brothers on stage at Tramlines or championing worthwhile new causes, he often makes sure he’s seen and heard – and making sure Sheffield gets noticed in the process. Love him or loathe him, as the first Somali, youngest-ever and first Green Party councillor to hold the role, you can’t deny he’s made a big impression. And he’s not even 30. Already confirmed to open the Taste of Independent Sheffield Festival on 21 September (see page 10 for more), he’s recently taken to the airwaves as a guest presenter a new evening show on BBC Radio Sheffield. The Monday Night Social is a new show featuring ‘communities, culture and conversation’, and Magid was one of a series of new presenters lined up to host the programme. Other presenters Howard Middleton who appeared on the Great British Bake Off in 2013 and drag artist Luke Hague, who is also known as Vivian Twist. Speaking prior to his radio debut, he said: “I can’t wait to present my first show on BBC Radio Sheffield and the new format is a great way to meet different characters from our communities, understand our differences and celebrate what we have in common as well. “I’m really impressed by the work the station is doing to make their programmes more inclusive and more creative. It’s brilliant to be part of their team in such a special year for me.” Katrina Bunker, editor of BBC Radio Sheffield, said: “We’re really excited about our new evening shows and we’ve worked hard to make sure we’re reaching out to new audiences and hearing new stories and new

characters we don’t currently hear in our daytime shows.” The Lord Mayor has also launched a bold new campaign asking organisations across the country to do more to tackle suicide by signing up to a new charter. The UK Suicide Prevention Charter urges organisations to create, evolve and enhance policies to support mental wellbeing and to develop their understanding of the risk factors around suicide, so they can target interventions. It also urges organisations to break the silence, offer mental health support, and educate their communities to reduce the risk of suicide and self-harming behaviour, as well as encouraging their employees and members to take an
online suicide prevention course. Magid said: “We sadly are living in a society where stigma keeps many people from seeking help and treatment for themselves and stops others from even talking about it. “We seriously need to change the culture around mental health and suicide, look out for one another and show compassion for one another. Supporting a close friend who was having suicidal thoughts inspired this campaign as I know there is so much we can all be doing to tackle it.” Magid has set himself a target to get 100 organisations to sign up to the charter by the end of the month. And as ever, he’s not mucking about, with the FA, BBC and local authorities already in his sights, to name but a few. The University of Sheffield and its Students’ Union have become the first organisations in the country to back the campaign. His next task is to launch an ‘I Love Sheffield’ day. As someone who likes to #ShoutAboutSheff’, we’ll be keeping a close eye on that one.

Falling in love with Sheffield – and the stage MEET THE SHEFFIELD VICAR’S DAUGHTER WHO HAS SKIPPED THE FIELDS OF WHEAT FOR A LIFE IN THEATRE. BY ASHLEY BIRCH.
passion still remains on stage. “I love both but I think the theatre is so much more real,” she tells us. “You get it right or you get off the stage. You get that beautiful rehearsal period, and then two weeks of a run that is chaotic. It’s literally you and the audience, you can feel them and I love that. There’s a different energy to it.” Religion is something that also features heavily in Genesia’s life; not only is her mother a vicar in Malin Bridge, her father is also a church army evangelist, as well as being a Peace in the Park organiser. She said: “I’ve always been welcomed to question religion and see how I relate to it. I just don’t like the word ‘religion’. Faith or belief in something is so much more real to me, whereas religion just seems too boxed, and rigid.” As much Genesia loves Sheffield, after she’s been travelling later this year, she might be making the leap to the Big Smoke in 2019 to catch her big break. Until then though, what does Genesia think people interested in Sheffield Theatre should be looking out for? She said: “I would say always the stuff in the Studio at the Crucible, I love Sheffield Theatres and the Crucible stage is very special to me, but because the Sudio is a bit smaller and because people are welcomed from elsewhere, there’s always such exciting things in there.”
ecently we had the pleasure of sitting down with Genesia Kalsi, the 21-year-old Sheffield actor and all-round good egg (her dad’s words, not ours!), to talk about acting, religion, and what we should be looking out for on the Sheffield Theatre scene... Genesia is originally from Uxbridge, London and moved up to Sheffield when she was six-years-old and her dad’s work brought the family north. When she arrived in the Steel City, it’s fair to say she wasn’t that impressed, and it took her until her teens before she made peace with our fair city. She is now ‘head over heels’ for Sheffield and tells us ‘she’s really proud to be from here.’ It was also in her teens – at sixth form – that she discovered her love of acting. “My mum always wanted to act,” says Genesia. “So it’s something I’ve always been around. I’ve always loved performing and I’m not a quiet person! “When I left school, I didn’t think about it as a career or anything like that, but while I was in sixth form it hit me that this could be something that I actually stick to. “I got involved with the National Theatre Connections that they do at The Crucible and did a tiny little play that me and 12 other people, who were all under 19 years old, were in. Someone told me they also do massive shows and that I should audition. Next thing, I’m on the Crucible stage, two years ago to the day!” Since then Genesia has had minor roles in other Sheffield Theatres productions such as Frost/Nixon and other independent film roles. She said: “One of my proudest bits of filming was something I did last year, with Let There be Light Productions. “They were filming for a charity called Apna Haq, and they saw me in the Vagina Monologues at SheFest, and thought I’d be great. It was something that was really close to my heart as well, because they interviewed women who were in domestic abuse. It was so raw.” But, while she enjoys the on-screen work, Genesia’s real
