Exhibitions Joe Scarborough: Life in the Big Village Until 24 November / Weston Park Museum / www.museums-sheffield.org.uk A brand new exhibition celebrating one of Sheffield’s best-loved artists is set to open at Weston Park Museum this summer. Joe Scarborough has affectionately documented Sheffield’s history in glorious technicolour in a career spanning over 50 years. Life in the Big Village will bring together over 60 paintings and drawings for the first time in over 25 years. Joe Scarborough was born in Pitsmoor in 1937. He first began to paint having spent six years working at Thorpe Hesley Colliery and as a miner found his inspiration in the colour and light above ground. After selling his first painting “for a fiver”, Scarborough left the pit and took several labouring jobs which allowed him to paint in the morning and evening. Joe said: “From the start of my career my paintings have been inspired by Sheffield and the people who live here. I’ve always seen the city as my native village – from the local pubs and parks to places where people work and live.”

Read all about it ONE OF THE UK’S LARGEST LITERARY FESTIVALS RETURNS TO THE CITY THIS MONTH WITH A LINE-UP INCLUDING LOCAL LEGENDS AND INTERNATIONAL STARS. ideals of the city, our fantastic researchers and our diverse population.” A Working Class Voices theme has been curated by Dr David Forrest at the University of Sheffield. Dr Forrest said: “The ways we write about and experience class have changed fundamentally in the last 50 years. Now, we might think of class as operating alongside and within other forms of identity: gender, race, and sexuality – we must look to our writers to speak from and give voice to the margins, wherever they might be found.” An Environment theme has been curated by festival director Dr Niamh Downing and Dr Harriet Tarlo from Sheffield Hallam University who comment: “Environmental change affects each and every one of us, whether it’s declining insect life in our gardens, air pollution in our city centres, or climactic events at a planetary scale. Each one of these writers and performers addresses environmental change… It has never been more important for us to hear their voices.” Other guests this year include Zadie Smith, David Baddiel, Katy Brand, David Suchet, Toria Garbutt, Jack Monroe, George Alagiah, Henry Blofeld, Mark Radcliffe, Jeffery Boakye, Louise Doughty, Michelle Tea, Vanessa Kisuule, BOSH! and Suede frontman, Brett Anderson. They will talk about life stories, current affairs, design, comedy, poetry, film screenings, cookery, everything Yorkshire, and more.
FLYING the flag for Sheffield in the upcoming Off The Shelf festival will be much-loved artist Pete McKee. The local legend will be discussing his latest book, Council Skies, the most comprehensive overview of his work since he began painting in 2004. At this beautifully illustrated talk on 22 October, Pete will chat about his working class culture, his influences, his inspiration and his work. Off the Shelf is one of the largest literary festivals in the UK and has a jam-packed programme of over 150 events featuring some of the best names in fiction and non fiction, poetry, politics, journalism, music, history and science. It is the only UK literary festival curated by two universities – the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Also doing the city proud will be Sheffield’s first poet laureate, Otis Mensah, who will be aiming to break down the barriers to poetry at Theatre Deli on 7 October, while author Sharna Jackson, the writer of the UK’s first detective series to feature young black detectives, talks about her work on 19 October. Another Sheffield-based author, Simon Beckett, will form part of the ‘Crime Afternoon’ on 19 October talking about his popular crime thrillers featuring forensic anthropologist, David Hunter. James Whitworth is a nationally syndicated news cartoonist whose work is featured in the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph as well as many national magazines including Private Eye. At an illustrated talk on 26 October, James will look at the short history of the British newspaper cartoon and discuss what it is like to be a cartoonist today. Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Culture at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are delighted to present such a relevant exciting and challenging programme reflecting the

‘Laugh like an idiot’ JACK WHITEHALL LIKES TO PUT ON A SHOW WITH A CAPITAL ‘S’. YOU BETTER GET READY SHEFFIELD, SAYS JAMES RAMPTON. stuff that could only happen in an arena. I really like big production values. You want to put on a proper show in an arena. Musicians do it, so why shouldn’t comedians?” It is fair to say, however, that Whitehall’s production values do not always go according to plan. When they do go wrong, though, it simply adds to the hilarity of the evening. Remember the incontinent horse? The stand-up, who has hosted The BRIT Awards for the last two years, welcomes such moments of unscripted comedy. “It’s great when something unexpected happens in the moment. My stage caught fire in Leeds once, and that suddenly became the show. I have pyrotechnics on stage because I always try to make my shows like a Beyonce gig. “But that night in Leeds the pyrotechnics went off in the wrong direction and part of the stage caught fire. The audience were laughing so hard because they thought it was part of the show. They didn’t know that something had gone seriously wrong and that I was in peril. But they were just laughing away, totally oblivious to that. “At first, I didn’t even realise what was going on because I had my back to the fire. Suddenly, the stage manager rushed on stage, grabbed me and dragged me off. I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ He replied, ‘Look, the stage is on fire!’ It was all quite dramatic, but the audience really loved it.” Whitehall, who next year will be starring opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt in Disney blockbuster movie, Jungle Cruise, proceeds to reveal what subjects he will be addressing in Stood Up. “You’re always reflecting on what’s going on in your life. I’ve been travelling a lot with my dad recently, so I’ll be talking about going around the world with him. “I’ll be discussing stuff about being in America, too, and how different I find that from the UK. I’ll also be talking about the sensitivity of the world at the moment and how it is very easy to cause offence and end up in trouble. Skirting that line can be very difficult.” Whitehall will, of course, also be dreaming up another grand entrance for Stood Up. “This show will definitely have some party tricks. In my first arena show, I came on stage on a Segway, and then the next time it was a horse. So God knows how I’m going to top that!” Finally, what does Whitehall hope that audiences will take away from Stood Up? “I love to make my shows really fun and silly. On stage I like to create a lot of joy and silliness, as I think the world is a depressing enough place as it is. I hope my show will be a fun distraction. I will be trying to get people beaming as they leave the auditorium at the end of the evening. “We are living in troubled times. Without wishing to give what I do any higher meaning, I think it’s really good to be distracted and laugh like an idiot for two hours.”
IN his live shows, Jack Whitehall likes to begin with a bang. Take the way he started the show on his last arena tour. “I love a big entrance,” the hugely popular comedian explains. “So last time I came on stage on a horse. In the first show, it did a sh*t on stage as soon as it came on. The audience were in absolute hysterics – especially as I had to clean it up before I could start the show. You can expect similarly brilliant comic moments from Whitehall’s new show, Stood Up, which is touring the UK and Ireland this autumn – his biggest such tour ever. Justly feted for his superb work on television, the comedian is, if anything, even more at home in the live arena. Whitehall is a dazzlingly funny stand-up. Often making himself the butt of his jokes, he generates wave upon wave of laughter in the auditorium. But be warned, he has a really loyal following, and his shows sell-out very rapidly – with many of the original dates already sold out. In person, he combines wit and warmth in the most magnetic fashion, and it is a sheer delight to spend an hour in his company. It is like being treated to a command performance – to an audience of one. Having been away from the stand-up arena for a while making hit movies and TV shows, Whitehall is very happy to be back doing what he adores above all else. Most recently seen in Lasse Hallstrom’s film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, opposite Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman; alongside Rosie Perez in the second series of Sky One’s Bounty Hunters (which he co-wrote); in Amazon series Good Omens with Jon Hamm, David Tennant and Michael Sheen; and as the first-ever guest host of The Graham Norton Show, the comedian outlines why stand-up gives him such a buzz. “I love the rapport you get with a live audience. It’s great that I’ve built an audience over the years. It’s very exciting that they know me and have seen the progression of my stand-up. They shout things out and that becomes part of the show.” Whitehall, who has also starred in such lauded TV shows as Decline & Fall, Fresh Meat, Bad Education, Backchat and A League of Their Own (which received a BAFTA Award in 2014 for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme), continues: “It’s great making film and TV and writing scripts. But often you wait months before it goes out. “There is something so appealing about being able to get up on stage in front of an audience and have a very authentic, instantaneous and organic experience with them. I love that element of stand-up. When you go away and do writing and acting, you miss that. You get the itch to return to stand-up. It’s a bug. I’d find it very hard ever to quit it. I’ll always come back to it. It’s my first love.” The other terrific aspect of Whitehall’s stand-up is that he thrives on creating a show with a capital S. He is always determined to give his audience wonderful value for money. The comedian, widely celebrated for the travelogue series, Travels With My Father, which returns to Netflix for a new series in September, observes that: “Doing an arena show, you have to make it feel like it belongs in an arena. So you have to do

LET’S be honest, we could do with a few laughs. What with the onset of dark nights, colder weather and the Brexit deadline looming at the end of the month, we could do with something to lift the spirits. Thankfully, October is packed to the rafters with top class comedy – the only problem you’ll have is how to fit it all in. The City Hall is the hub for the majority of the big names – think Sir Lenny Henry, Eddie Izzard and Dave Gorman – but don’t miss Toby Foster’s Last Laugh Comedy Club, which is held every Friday and Saturday in the Memorial Hall. STEWART FRANCIS 10 October The star of ‘Mock the Week’, ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Crackerjack’ embarks on a brand-new show, in this, his last tour ever! See him before he heads off... INTO THE PUNSET. RHOD GILBERT 11 October It has been a while, but the multi-award-winning Welsh comedian is back, with a brand new live show. In a six-year break from stand-up, a lot has happened to Rhod. Almost all of it s**t. And just when he thought he’d hit rock bottom, he met a bloke...called John. This show sees Rhod as funny as ever, but like never before. Raw, personal and brutally honest; no more lies, no more nonsense. RUBY WAX 16 October Based on her bestselling book, Ruby’s new show ‘How To Be Human’ answers every question you’ve ever had about evolution, thoughts, emotions, the body, addictions, relationships, sex, kids, the future and compassion. We can’t stop the future from arriving, no matter what drugs we’re on. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, mechanical fingers crossed we’ll still have our minds. Hopefully we’ll use them for things like compassion, instead of just chasing what’s ‘better’ like a hamster on a wheel. If we can do that, we’re on the yellow brick road to happiness. Outrageously witty and smart, blending brilliant comedy and insightful life lessons, How To Be Human is the show you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you’ve upgraded your iPhone.
writing his memoir - from growing up in the Black Country, puberty, school, friendship, family secrets and unashamed racism. With his mother’s mantra of ‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny will recount setting out on his roller coaster ride of a career - but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? Is this what they want? In part two, Lenny will be interviewed by friend, broadcaster and author Jon Canter, for further insights into his life and career, followed by questions from the audience. Come and enjoy these honest and tender stories, told with a glorious sense of humour and help Lenny figure out ‘Who Am I Again?’ Lenny said: “I’m looking forward to travelling around and telling these stories. Writing the book was a huge feat and I’m very proud of it - I can’t wait to share more stories and fun about growing up in the Midlands, my early days in the clubs, pubs and discotheques and of course working on Tiswas, Three of a Kind and The Lenny Henry Show. The show promises to be an evening of memories, laughter and fun - I can’t wait to get started.” Lenny Henry has been a comedian since the age of 16. He has risen from being a cult star on children’s television to one of Britain’s best-known and most celebrated comedians, as well as a writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief, and an award-winning actor. Henry has a PhD in Media Arts, and in 2015 was awarded a knighthood for services to charity and drama.

LEADMILL DAVE JOHNS 3 October Dave Johns has been a stand up comic for nearly three decades touring his one man shows worldwide. He is perhaps best known for his critically acclaimed breakthrough performance in Ken Loach’s 2016 Palme d’Or and Baftawinning film I, Daniel Blake. LAURENCE CLARK 6 October An Irresponsible Father’s Guide to Parenting gives a comic, brutally honest and charming account of what it’s really like to be a disabled parent. It both challenges and engages and has the potential to reach new audiences by exploring the commonality and differences in the experiences of disabled and non-disabled fathers. If Laurence is an irresponsible father then it is probably more to do with balancing his wife’s crutches on his son’s baby walker to make him look like a Dalek! SPONTANEOUS POTTER 16 October The smash hit Spontaneous Potter is an entirely improvised Harry Potter comedy play, based on an audience suggestion of a fanfiction title. Hilarity ensues as an entirely new Potter adventure is magically improvised on the spot – with live musical accompaniment. Previous titles performed include: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Commerce, Harry Potter and the Neville Wears Prada, Harry Potter and the Rise of the Planet of the Snapes, Harry Potter and the Struggle for a Decent Mortgage in This Economy.
GEORGE EGG 23 October Brand new comedy from the stand-up who cooks on stage. George demonstrates how to cook with an engine, procure items from the train buffet trolley and turn unexpected roadworks into a picnic. Three plates of gourmet food cooked live in the most unconventional ways and with the opportunity to taste the results at the end, provided you can stop laughing.
GLENN MOORE 20 October Glenn Moore, star of Mock The Week, The Stand Up Sketch Show and Absolute Radio, presents his first solo UK tour, full of the distinctive jokes and offbeat gags we’ve learned to accept from him. Moore’s bringing you two shows in one night, featuring last year’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated effort ‘Glenn Glenn Glenn, How Do You Like It, How Do You Like It’, and this year’s highly anticipated ‘Love Don’t Live Here Glenny Moore’.
EDDIE IZZARD 27 October Five years after his last comedy tour ‘Force Majeure’ made comedy history having played 45 countries including all 50 US States and in four languages, making it the most extensive comedy show ever, Eddie is back to his roots with an all-new rather personal show which expands on his own very unique, totally surreal view of life, love, history and his ‘theory of the universe’. “It is getting close to the time when I have to go off for a while to have a political life. But before I do that, I want to keep giving audiences around the world the best stand-up comedy shows that I can – especially at a time of Brexit-hate and Trump-hate. My new show is about everything from humans over the last 100,000 years to talking dogs and animal superheroes. I am looking forward to coming to see everyone again.” Wunderbar is a delicious insight into the surreal and fantastical world of Eddie Izzard. This is intelligent Bunkum of the highest order.
JAMES ACASTER 23 October ‘Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999’ is a peculiar name for a show but one that is fully justified, as James explains: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. “It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show.”
JONATHAN PIE 30 October If no news is good news then good news is fake news. Jonathan Pie returns to the road once more to berate the people in power – and the journalists apparently holding them to account. With over 1.2 Million Facebook followers, his videos regularly achieve millions of views going viral internationally. His response to the election of Donald Trump was viewed more than 150 million times worldwide.
JOHN ROBINS 30 October Join John Robins for his new stand-up show following the critically lauded, sell-out smash, ‘The Darkness Of Robins’. As well as receiving widespread acclaim for his radio show with Elis James, John Robins has gained a reputation as a stand-up for finding humour in our bleakest moments. Expect soul-bearing, self-lacerating, piping-hot shame!

Fancy a slice?
From butchers to bhajis
Cutlery Works has welcomed a new trader – Base Pizza Co. The new pizza purveyors are bringing traditional Neapolitan pizza to the food hall, along with focaccia slabs and toppings, a selection of Italian sides and Menabrea beer buckets. For those with a sweet tooth, they will also offer their ‘secret recipe’ tiramisu and cannoli. And if that’s not enough to go at, as a weekend treat, they’re bringing you ‘The Full Italian’, which is their take on a Full English Breakfast and features Napoli fennel sausage, tomato pesto, mushrooms, pancetta, spinach and egg on top of toasted focaccia, and is described by Base’s co-owner Gian Bohan as ‘a monster’. Gian has over 24 years’ experience in the Sheffield restaurant scene and has set up Base Pizza Co. with Joe Hewett-Hobson, his business partner in the plant-based health food business Shed, which recently moved out of Cutlery Works to focus on other ventures.
Owners of Sheffield favourite The Bhaji Shop have opened a brand new deli in the old Kempka’s Butchers on Abbeydale Road. The former Polish butchers, just across from Abbeydale Picture House, is now an all-new Bhaji Shop, serving up what you’ve come to expect from your local Indian-style deli. “It’s going to be the same as the shop on Chesterfield Road,” says owner Matt Holdsworth: “We’ll be doing Indian-style deli food. So there’ll be bhajis, samosas, curries and salads all available for takeaway, as well as the ‘weigh and pay’ if people want to bring their own containers. “We’ve got a bigger kitchen here so we can start to take on a bit more outside catering as well, and it just gives us a bit more scope to do a bit more stuff. “It’s nice to be doing shops again as opposed to cafes and restaurants. People really like to support the local shops, particularly over on Chesterfield Road, and we’re hoping it will be a similar community here.”
Rum deal
New to Sheffield
Plans have been submitted by the makers of O’Hara’s Spiced Rum, Sheffield’s only rum company, to create a new rum cocktail bar, rum school and bottling plant in Kelham Island’s 92 Burton Road complex. O’Hara’s Spiced Rum, supported by Brady Estates, has submitted an application to Sheffield City Council for the change of use of a unit on Burton Road, next door to Peddler and Kelham Arcade, where the famous Pete McKee mural takes pride of place. The bar, which is the first of its kind in the city, will give people a chance to experience some of the finest and most exotic rums the world has to offer, as well as cocktails created with Sheffield’s favourite house rums. It will also become home to a unique new rum school, hold rum sessions and rum masterclasses.
Traditional Romanian cuisine is ready to make its mark in Sheffield with the recent arrival of La Vlad Romanian Restaurant, a family run eatery serving classic dishes from across Romania and an array of fantastic Romanian wines and spirits, you probably never knew existed! The Attercliffe Road business is the first and only Romanian restaurant in the city, and the team recently hosted their first ever bistro night, introducing people to the wonder of Romanian cooking. We went along to catch up with owners Adrian Briciu and Camelia Colnic, to find out a bit more about the humble cuisine. “There kind of is no such thing as Romanian cuisine,” says Adrian (we told you they were humble!): “It varies from region to region, so in the East you will get subtly different flavours and dishes to what you get in the North for example, and traditionally it would depend on what you could grow in each region. Romania is a melting pot of different cultures, cuisines and cooking styles that have influenced the region over the last 2,000 years.”
Alpine bar makes festive debut This year’s Sheffield Christmas Market will see its popular Sleigh Bar at the top of Fargate replaced with an even bigger Alpine Bar, run by an independent Sheffield company. Julie Wilson of Percival Events, who run Sheffield’s Christmas Market, told VIBE: “Whilst we’ve loved having the Sleigh Bar with us, it’s become time for a change. We’ve got a brand new bar in that’s bigger, to accommodate more people. “Every year we like to change things and the comments have been that the markets have been a bit samey, so we just wanted to mix things up a bit. “Alpine bar is run by a small independent Sheffield company and we welcome any suggestions from people of what they would love to see.”
Niche addition North Sheffield brew specialists Lost Industry Brewing have revealed plans for their first craft ale tap room on the site of the old Niche nightclub, on Sidney Street. The brewery’s new bar will feature 21 lines of beer, including stouts, pale ales and IPAs from both their own selection of their Wadsley Bridge brewed beers and a rotating range of speciallycurated guest ales. As well as the beers, they also plan to serve up pizzas and paninis made fresh on site, with more plans to host a range of beer-fuelled events further down the line, although there has been no mention of a Niche reunion night as yet!

Feel like chicken tonight?
New concept
Offering balls of every description (rice, pasta, dough) as well as the headline, mouth-watering rotisserie chicken, La Baracca is Abbeydale Road’s latest comfort food joint. The menu is packed full of healthy, fresh ingredients, so you can make this your regular without worrying about your waistline. You also won’t need to worry about your bank account, with little bites of heaven – otherwise known as arancini balls – priced at £1.50 and lasagne for £6.50; this place is serving good, honest food that’s small on price but big on flavour. Kim, daughter of Sorrento-born owner Saverio, told VIBE: “La Baracca is an authentic Italian chicken rotisserie restaurant. All the chickens that we get are free range, corn fed, and everything we make on the premises is home-cooked. “We don’t like to have a huge impact on the planet, and if you’re gonna eat meat it’s one of the meats to eat which has the least impact on the planet. We just wanted a rustic, good and honest family place, which definitely fits in very well on Abbeydale Road.” The restaurant also champions the use of recyclable materials, storing all ingredients in glass bottles and sourcing all their fresh produce locally.
Ecclesall Road recently welcomed a brand new Sri Lankan bar and restaurant to its ranks, in the site vacated by the shortlived Bocelli’s, on the corner of Denham Road. Family-run restaurant Colombo by Ayubowan is hoping to bring a touch of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine to the road, including Sri Lankan curries and popular Colombo street food dishes. Named after the capital city of Sri Lanka and its Glossopbased sister restaurant Ayubowan, Colombo is the third restaurant from the family, after their Glossop venue which opened in 2013 and the first Colombo, which opened near Matlock in April 2019. The owner’s sister and bar and restaurant manager Malsha Wettasinghe told VIBE: “The Glossop restaurant is like the flagship, all the menus and the recipes come from the chef’s secrets from that first restaurant. “This is the first city venture. It’s a similar concept, but because of locations all three of them have differences. Sri Lankan food is what we do. It’s curry-based but it is very different to Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani style curries. “We try to be as healthy as we can, we don’t really use sugar or double cream, it’s more coconut milk, coconut cream and a lot of rustic curry powders, fenugreek, curry leaves. The chefs then make all the sauces, all the breads and desserts in house. Menus are similar across the sites but Sheffield is slightly different because it’s a bar as well.”
Taste of Japan By the time you read this, new Japanese restaurant, Tsuki, should have opened its doors on West Street. The restaurant promises ‘elegant and authentic Japanese cuisine, with a menu that encompasses Japan’s most culturally foundational dishes’. It’s big on tech too. Co-owner Monika Rowczenio said: “Our chefs have many, many years’ experience, most working in London and some even in Japan. The items on the menu have been carefully selected by our head chef and we just want to keep it down to excellent dishes. Quality over quantity.” Partner Jason He added: “Food is a priority for us. It needs to taste good. But we’re offering the experience along with the food.” This is where the technology comes in; there’s no paper menus to be found here. Instead, each guest will be provided with a tablet on arrival. The tablet contains the restaurant’s treasure trove of a menu, which will consist of Japanese staples such as sashimi, tempura and maki rolls amongst other traditional Japanese dishes. Each menu item will have images alongside it showing diners what they’re ordering, descriptions of the dish, as well as ingredients and allergen information. When you’ve found what you want you simply add it to the basket, just like you would on Amazon! There are options to buy individual items from an a la carte menu or you can choose to sample as much, or as little as you like, for a set price. Once you’ve made your order, the food is brought to you by waiters, who will also take payments at the end of the meal.
Konjö-ing up a new outlet Critically acclaimed and much-loved Sheffield restaurant Jöro has announced a new casual dining spin-off inside Sheffield’s first food hall, Cutlery Works. New venture Konjö is a robata kitchen, a type of charcoal grill used to prepare Japanese food, and will feature some of the dishes made famous at the shipping container restaurant, along with a whole host of new skewers and small plates. All the dishes will be cooked on Konjö’s custom, Japanese Konro BBQ grills and to avoid setting off all the Cutlery Works fire alarms, we’re reliably informed they will be using Binchotan, a smokeless Japanese charcoal brick made from oak. The menu will be broken down into two main sections; yakistyle skewers and small plates and snacks. The yaki will be mainly chicken and duck-based, utilising the whole bird, from the breast and fillet to the skin, wings and thighs, with each skewer taken to the next level with a different Japanese-inspired glaze. The other dishes will consist of ingredients that don’t necessarily lend themselves to being put on a stick! Things like their Moss Valley pork belly, with Katsu ketchup and coriander garnish, a Jöro favourite.

Latin flair GREAT FOOD, MUSIC AND COCKTAILS ALL ADD UP TO A GREAT NIGHT OUT AT CUBANA, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. order per person; we settled on the ‘Hungry’ recommendation (we were) and ordered four dishes each. I love Pimientos de Padrón (£5.95) and Cubana’s version was a great introduction to the evening, Salty and slightly bitter, they were delicious. To satisfy our carnivorous cravings we chose Res y Cebolla (£6.25) – sliced ribeye steak with caramelised red onions; Cerdo Sofrito Español (£6.25) – slow roasted pork shoulder steak with peppers, onions, olives, tomatoes and red wine; and Chorizo y Huevo con Patatas (£5.95) – crispy potatoes and spicy chorizo topped with a free range egg. Jamon y Queso de Cabra (£6.50) – goats cheese wrapped in Serrano ham and served with caramelised red onions was particularly tasty whilst dishes of Gambas Pil Pil (£6.50) – panfried tiger prawns cooked in garlic and olive oil; Calamares a la Andaluza (£6.95) – crispy squid; and Atún con Frijoles (£7.25) – tuna steak served with cannellini bean salsa, provided delicious seafood options. All were excellent. Pushed to find room for dessert, we decided to share an indulgent but not too sweet slice of Dulce de Leche cheesecake (£4.95) whilst I rounded things off with an espresso martini (£7.75). We couldn’t fault a thing.
FRIDAY night was date night. At least it was, on this occasion, for my wife and I as we headed to Cubana for a night of tapas, cocktails and salsa dancing. Ok, so I gave the last one a miss (given that I’ve got two left feet) but still, as Meat Loaf said, two out of three ain’t bad. Singer Shane Durrant had just started his set as we took our seats in the upstairs restaurant, which was already buzzing – and got busier as the evening progressed. He clearly knew how to work his crowd as he flitted between classic hits from the likes of The Killers, Dolly Parton, Journey and, you guessed it, Meat Loaf. Even the staff were dancing by the end of the night. The live music and frivolity all add to the atmosphere at Cubana and is why it is such a popular spot for a night on the town – and why they’ve been regular winners at our yearly awards in our ‘Best Night Out’ category. It’s much more than just a meal out, it’s more of an experience. And a good one at that. Cocktails are a good way to start any evening and a fruity Bramble (£7.25) and zingy Cairpirinha (£7.25) didn’t disappoint. We happily sipped away as we perused the menu. Now, the choice of tapas on offer at Cubana is huge – 33 hot tapas, seven cold as well as eight side dishes. If you’re unsure of where to start, their set menus are a great option but, feeling a little adventurous, we decided to make our own choices. The restaurant provides a guide on how many dishes to

want. I painted a few slogans at Park Hill back in 2009, so I really enjoyed being up there again.
RAPPER, graffiti artist, illustrator – there’s basically no end to Kid Acne’s talents. From his unmissable slogan work adorning huge industrial buildings and wall space across the city to his perhaps lesser-known, but equally accomplished, musical output, Kid Acne has left his mark on his adopted city in a lot more ways than one. So, when it was revealed that he was holding a new exhibition for the first time in five years, well, we were pretty bloody excited. Even more exciting was that ‘HAVE A WORD’ was held up at Park Hill’s S1 Artspace. Park Hill was, of course, the scene of his huge light show earlier this year for the opening of Sheffield hit-musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge. The new exhibition incorporated his love of both music and art by showcasing the link between lyrics and typography. The show opened in September and we can tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Now that the show is finished, it also means after a hectic few months, Kid Acne (real name Ed Bradbury) finally has the chance to breathe and reflect...
What’s been the main inspiration for HAVE A WORD? I knew I wanted to do a solo exhibition in Sheffield this year, but I wasn’t quite sure how or what that would be. I’d also been recording music again (with Chicago-based producer, Spectacular Diagnostics) so knew I’d be releasing an album this year too. Generally speaking, my art and music have been separate entities, even though they’re both something I’ve done since I was a teenager. I turned 40 in December and decided it was about time I start pulling those worlds together. It made most sense to focus on lyrics and typography in order to give myself some parameters to work to and I’m really happy with the end result. Now I’ve worked through the process, I can also see where else I might take it in the future. Have you enjoyed merging two of your passions? Yeah, it’s actually been pretty straightforward and a lot of fun. I had lots of other really convoluted and contrived ideas before this, but as soon as I focussed on the slogans as the main theme, everything clicked into place. I transcribed all the lyrics from my album when it was about 90 per cent done and started pulling out all the phrases and expressions I might normally paint anyway. There was loads, which I hadn’t initially noticed. Once I had a list together, I then added a few more lyrics to the album, which directly referenced existing slogans and idioms, so it all connected nicely without sounding too forced. µ
Alright Ed, you’ve been a bit busy, haven’t you? Can you tell us a little bit more about your latest project? Since Easter I’ve been working on a selfdirected solo show based at Park Hill. The indoor exhibition is currently hosted by S1 Artspace and ran until the end of September. Alongside that, I’ve also painted a series of outdoor slogan murals in undeveloped parts of the estate, thanks to Urban Splash – who’ve allowed me to become an unofficial “artist in residence” over the past few months and do pretty much whatever I

of walls and them having impact, to painting so many that it feels over-saturated before people become desensitised or bored of seeing it. Having a contained area with limited public access is perfect. Park Hill is such an iconic place with so much history and totally reminiscent of the graffiti “Halls of Fame” I’d see photos of in the 1990s. Although I was a bit too young to go to these places myself, I’d seen tons of photos of pieces painted on huge concrete walls in old housing estates, such as Trellick in West London, Hulme in Manchester and Kelvin Flats in Sheffield. I grew up in the East Midlands and used to paint in abandoned places when I was younger, including an old gas works in the middle of a field, just off the M1 and an old farmhouse off the A5. So while I’m no longer doing graffiti, it’s been an amazing experience painting in a setting that has a similar vibe to all of that and essentially creating my own “Hall of Fame” / outdoor gallery.
Which do you get more out of, music or art? I like both for different reasons. Art is what comes most naturally I guess. I’m completely self-sufficient in that sense and am quite happy painting, drawing and printing by myself – but then it’s a solitary existence, so as a balance, I love making music. It’s a good excuse to collaborate with other people without compromising my art and going off on too many tangents. Whether it’s working with producers, engineers or emcees, I enjoy the whole process, from writing and mixing, to thinking of track titles and picking the running order of the album and designing the record sleeve. It’s very time consuming, but equally rewarding, though it’s not something I ever feel compelled to do on my own. How are you feeling now that people have had the chance to see the exhibition? I’m really happy people got to see what I’ve been working on for so long. Aside from a few friends, no-one knew this was happening so it’s been cool to share it with everyone. People have been coming from all over the country to see the show. S1 Artspace is such an amazing place. It’s the converted garage block with low ceilings and exposed concrete columns. Perfect setting for the show in my view.
What are you loving about Sheffield right now? I’m loving seeing loads of new independent stuff popping up to be honest. There’s been highs and lows in Sheffield since I’ve lived here and right now it feels like it’s on a high. What’s next for Kid Acne? I’m continuing to paint up at Park Hill and am also collaborating with Sheffield Hallam University on a few projects, who’ve helped support the show. The album, HAVE A WORD is being released by Lex Records on 8 November. So if you miss the early doors vinyl, keep an out then.
Has Park Hill been important in the creation of the work? Absolutely. Once I had the idea to paint slogans as part of the project, I knew I wanted to do a bunch of them so needed to find a suitable location. Having painted in the street for over 25 years, I’m aware there’s a fine balance between painting a load

Rough it for Roundabout WOULD YOU ‘SLEEP OUT’ FOR CHARITY? RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT HOW YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND HOW ROUNDABOUT IMPROVE SO MANY PEOPLE’S LIVES. session will see participants furnished with tuned percussion tubes to create amazing patterns that fuse harmony with rhythm and build team spirit, to help with preparations to try and get some sleep from midnight. Ben Keegan, Roundabout’s CEO, said: “When the colder months arrive, being left with nowhere to go is a terrible prospect for anyone, but particularly for those who are young and vulnerable. While Sleep Out can’t truly replicate what it’s like to be lonely, frightened and homeless it can help make a real difference. “We would love as many people as possible to come and take part. The money raised through sponsorship will help us continue with our homeless prevention work, drop-in advice services and our ground-breaking Peer Education programme in schools. Ultimately, we want to help young people avoid ever having to experience homelessness.”
WE’VE all witnessed it but how many of us have actually tried to do something about it? Homelessness is a growing concern, particularly amongst the young in the city. Roundabout has been supporting vulnerable young people in Sheffield for over 40 years by providing shelter, support and life skills. Through a variety of services, the charity aims to support and empower young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, to learn the necessary skills they need to become independent. Each year they hold a Sleep Out – and they’re inviting you to take part. This year’s event, sponsored by Henry Boot and Sharp Consultancy, takes place on Friday 8 November at 92 Burton Road in Kelham Island. The event aims to raise awareness and funds to prevent homelessness becoming a reality for vulnerable young people in the city, by encouraging supporters to gain sponsorship for experiencing what a night sleeping rough could be like. While a tough, cold night on a hard warehouse floor may lie in store for hardy participants, there is also some great entertainment and refreshments in store to help prepare for the challenge. Proceedings will kick off at 8pm with speeches from Roundabout representatives before Sheffield-based Unbeatable Energy, run by Steve Rivers, will get rough sleepers warmed up with an energetic boomwhacker workshop. By training to become a peer educator, Christie has been able to get real experience of working in a classroom environment and build her confidence by talking in front of students. She is also now signed up to the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, the first step towards achieving her dream of becoming a teaching assistant. Once she has completed her course, Rowena will support Christie in looking at the next steps she needs to take towards achieving her career goal in order to support herself and her daughter. Christie said: “It’s really good to have this support. Rowena has helped me access new opportunities that I wouldn’t have known how to achieve on my own. For me, it’s one less thing to worry about because I know the support is there. “There is a positive quote that I really like, which is: ‘Actions may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without actions’, and thanks to Roundabout I am now able to take actions towards my future.”
Christie Broadhead has benefited from the services and support Roundabout provide. ROUNDABOUT has found that the majority of young people who leave home do so due to a breakdown in family relationships and they feel like they can no longer stay there. This is exactly what happened to Christie, but since then, she has taken huge steps towards turning her life around. In 2014, when she was 18, Christie left the family home and moved into Roundabout’s hostel where she was safe and had dedicated support from her allocated key worker. She made good progress towards living independently and after three months she was supported to move into her own accommodation and live with her partner. However, after a while Christie separated from her partner. She’d had a little girl and was living on her own, which led to difficulties with budgeting her money efficiently. At the start of 2018 Christie once more sought support from Roundabout to help with budgeting, maintaining her tenancy and discussing ways in which she could become self-sufficient in the long-term. Her support worker referred Christie to Rowena Bletcher, Employment and Skills Worker at Roundabout, so she could take the first steps towards making plans for her future. Christie said: “I’d always wanted to be a teaching assistant, but because of the financial costs involved had never pursued it. “I thought that this dream was something that would never happen as I couldn’t afford to study or gain the necessary qualifications. I also didn’t really know where to start!” Rowena referred Christie to Roundabout’s Peer Education Team – a group of young people affected by homelessness who go into schools to hold homeless education lessons. They aim to break down stereotypes associated with homelessness and

representatives and Peer Educators. These are young people supported by Roundabout who have undertaken training to host lessons in schools and relay their experiences. It takes great resilience to overcome the challenges they have faced, so it was deeply inspiring to understand how they have translated their experiences into a positive resource for supporting others in need. Some of the experiences were difficult to hear, but what really hit home was how with the right support and attitude we can create a happy ending for ourselves no matter how dark the road ahead might seem. After dinner, musical entertainment and a quiz to build some team spirit I tucked myself in for what proved to be a cold and uncomfortable night. When 5am eventually rolled around we woke up to toast, coffee and whispered grumbles about sore backs and numb toes, before the warehouse began to empty as people scurried off into the weekend. Sleep Out was as much about walking in someone else’s shoes as it was about being thankful for what we have. We were swaddled in sleeping bags next to fellow volunteers; the homeless don’t always have sufficient protection against brutally cold winter nights. We had a warm meal and hot drinks; the homeless usually go to bed hungry. We had people to talk to and to keep us company for the night; the homeless can often feel lonely, isolated, and ostracised from lack of meaningful interactions and connections with others. Above all, we all got to return home to our warm beds… we barely came close to what sleeping rough really is like.
ChianYing Xuang, a University of Sheffield Student, took part in last year’s Sleep out event. MY shoes are damp from the rain and I can feel bits of gravel in my socks. The sky fades into a deep navy, the temperature dips to a biting chill… and it’s only 8pm. It’s one of those times when you’d be glad to have had a long day, because if you aren’t knackered by bedtime it’s going to be a long night. While this is my very first experience of Sleep Out I’ve been aware of Roundabout, South Yorkshire’s youth homeless charity, for almost a year. I ran a short design workshop with some of the young people at one of their residential projects, where I encouraged them to envision, draw and write about their aspirations for the future. I was immensely proud of the variety of work we produced and participating in Sleep Out felt like a natural next step in continuing to show my support. That was how I found myself at 92 Burton Road on a cold, wet Friday night, sleeping bag in arm and woolly hat on head, all geared up to try and slumber in a warehouse in order to raise money through sponsorship for Roundabout. A fire crackled away outside the building as people steadily filed in with thermos flasks and blankets. I selected a snooze spot on the warehouse floor, which had been laid out with cardboard donated by local businesses. I discovered there were other students braving the night with me and a clarifying point of discussion for us was about the minor inconveniences of living in student accommodation. Taking part in Sleep Out helped us gain some much-needed perspective. It is all too easy to lament a leaky tap or a faulty light until you’re faced with a night without a warm bed. The event kicked off with a performance by the Sheffield Samba Band before we settled down for talks by Roundabout
Registration for Sleep Out is now open online at roundaboutsleepout.co.uk costing £20 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £150 through sponsorship.
