WELCOME
WELCOME TO VIBE QUARTERLY...
WELCOME to this spring edition of Vibe Quarterly, our first of the new year. The last three months has seen a few changes at Vibe HQ, most notably the departure of digital editor Ashley Birch and the arrival of Claudia Downs. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Claudia to the team, she’s fitted in seamlessly so far and will play a leading role in taking Vibe to a wider audience. Claudia will be ‘Shouting About Sheffield’ and your main point of contact for all things digital, so if you’ve got a story, event or opening, you can call her on 0114 250 6300 or email claudia.downs@rmcmedia.co.uk. In this magazine we’re making the most of the weather – thanks goodness we’ve seen the back of Storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge – and getting involved with the Festival of the Outdoors. We look at some of the events and activities coming up on page 26. If you were bitten by the fitness bug but are now finding it hard to keep the momentum going, we may have the answer. Chiara Albrizio, aka KikiCProject, is on hand to answer your training questions and give you that extra little push (page 30). Like many, we’re looking forward to the return of Shakespeare to the Crucible and spoke to Scottish actress Stella Gonet (page 24), who will be channelling her inner Judy Murray for her role in Coriolanus, which is at the Crucible from 6-21 March. Keeping things north of the border, we also spoke to rockers Twin Atlantic (page 22) on the eve of their return to the Leadmill. Elsewhere we look at why Broomhill is full of beans (page 10), the Festival of Debate (page 28) and keep you up to date with the latest news. See you in summer. Richard Abbey Editor

FOOD NEWS
Be first to the table
Something new is brewing
Sheffield’s Scandi-style boutique hotel Brocco on the Park has launched a monthly Chef’s Table evening. Owner Tiina Carr and head chef Leslie Buddington have won multiple awards over the last few years for the relaxed setting and innovative approach to dining in the Brocco Kitchen. But the Chef’s Table, being held on one Tuesday per month, gives them a chance to break away from Brocco’s signature style and do something completely different. “We’re giving Leslie a free hand to come up with a menu of different dishes that you won’t see on any of our regular menus,” said Tiina. “We started closing the restaurant on Tuesday evening to give our chefs a regular day off but this also gives us the freedom to try something completely different on a monthly basis.” Leslie is also taking the opportunity to introduce a new, innovative style of cooking to his young kitchen brigade and for the first event in February he had young chef Liam Dickinson working alongside him. With 12 people around the table and a set menu of innovative, delicious dishes including langoustine with celeriac, pea and pancetta; and duck with hoisin sauce, pickled cucumber and sesame cashews, the new venture was greeted with enthusiasm by all who attended. There was also a selection of wines designed to complement the dishes, selected by Tracy Mathieson of Le Bon Vin. The next Chef’s Table events featuring Leslie Buddington’s off-menu, seasonal and innovative Michelin Plate-winning food are at Brocco Kitchen on Tuesday 17 March and Tuesday 21 April: £45 for five courses with an optional wine flight for £30. Places are limited: call 0114 266 1233 to book.
Derbsyhire brewers, Heist Brew Co, are making the move from a sleepy Derbyshire village, Clowne, to the once beating heart of Sheffield’s industry. The massive project will see an old machine works, close to Cutlery Works and the Gardeners Rest pub, transformed into a brewery with interactive tours, tastings and events, plus two bars and and a, as yet to be named, burger joint. It’s slated for a summer opening. The bars will have 30 craft beer lines, including ten Heist lines, as well as beers from the rest of the UK and Europe, regular guest lines from the US and a special release bar top cask. Food – largely signature stacks and loaded fries – will be provided by a special street food vendor (TBA) who will also host specialist guest vendors from around the UK and other unique food experiences. Working with other local businesses, Heist will be hosting a number of events in the coming months including a food and beer pairing at Boozehound (Cutlery Works), a summer skate jam and BBQ at The House Skatepark, and a beer and cocktail evening at The Millowners Arms. Vibe will be keeping you updated in the coming months. In the meantime visit www.heistbrewco.com
Hops and honey True North Brew Co has announced it will be firing up the stills for a limited run of one of its most popular editions. Sheffield Dry Gin Hops & Honey is now available to purchase online and in selected True North venues. Combining the sweet flavours of homegrown Sheffield Honey and citrus notes from selected hops with the iconic taste of premium Sheffield Dry Gin, this classic blend treats the palate a truly unique flavour. Head Distiller Dean Hollingworth said, “Since we first released Hops & Honey, we’ve received so many messages from customers and wholesalers asking if they can get it so it’s always exciting that we get to bring it back for a limited run. We’ll only be making 100 bottles though so make sure you get it while you can.”
Birthday celebrations Sport Shack, Hillsborough are celebrating their first birthday. “Sheffield is a fantastic city and this site is really leading the way in small sports bars. People always ask us the secret to our success, this is due to lots of hours, passion and not getting too big too quick, said owners Danny Grayson and James Dobson. Many happy returns guys!
Weekend opening Sheffield Brewery Company – on the corner of Burton Road and Percy Street at Kelham Island – are now opening every Friday (4-11pm) and Saturday (2-11pm). And they don’t just sell beer – they have a range of house gins from Whitley Neill, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

FOOD & DRINK
Food for thought A GREAT MENU AND GREAT VALUE; CHRIS WILSON IS ALL SMILES AFTER A VISIT TO THIS UNDISCOVERED GEM. with burnt pear and walnut which was full of sweet-salty contrasts. For mains pan-roasted Moss Valley pork fillet was cooked to perfection, succulent and full of flavour. All the accompaniments, from the smooth mash to the caramelised baby leeks and the sharp cider sauce, came together perfectly. Equally special was our other main course dish, a generous portion of crispy crumb-coated Katsu chicken curry served with sticky rice, spring onion, mouli and carrot salad dressed with soy and wasabi. Presentation was smart throughout with beautiful plates and bowls and signature dagger-style knives made, of course, from the stainless Sheffield steel that gives Inox its name. We chose well but there were plenty of alternative savoury dishes to demand a return visit, such as a starter of salt cod croquette with celeriac remoulade and burnt lemon dressing or a main dish of pumpkin and lemon thyme gnocchi with old Winchester cheese, chargrilled broccoli, pumpkin purée and toasted pumpkin seeds. For dessert my weakness for something sweet was well and truly sated by a caramelised white chocolate mousse. Morsels of sharp Yorkshire forced rhubarb and ginger provided a welcome contrast and prevented my sugar rush from becoming a full-flung coma. With a chunk of rich, runny Brie-style Yorkshire cheese with chutney and biscuits for my sweetenough dining companion, a Friday lunch at Inox proved to be the perfect way to ease into the weekend. This really was one of the best looking menus I’d read for a long while and at two courses for £15, three for £18, also tremendous value.
A COLLEAGUE recently went to a six-course feast to mark the start of the Six Nations tournament at Inox, the Scandi caféstyle venue on the fifth floor of Sheffield University’s Students’ Union Building, and was wowed by the quality and consistency of the food delivered to a room packed to the rafters with hungry (and thirsty) rugby fans. I’ve heard similarly enthusiastic reports from people who have attended weddings and business functions there. But you don’t have to wait for an invitation to a big ‘do’ to discover the joys of eating at Inox. When not hosting functions it’s open for lunch and early dinner and food of this quality and value must make it one of the undiscovered gems of the Sheffield dining scene. First impressions are of a modern, airy, high-ceilinged and unfussy streamlined room. It’s a relaxed space and if you bag a window seat there are striking views to be had across Western Bank to the university’s gothic-style Firth Court building. At first glance the menu is pretty modest with five choices for starters and mains, three desserts and a cheese course. But close inspection reveals a cleverly constructed selection of dishes making the most of British ingredients with an international twist, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan alternatives. The drinks menu is similarly compact but beautifully balanced too, although when we visited that aforementioned sporting dinner from two days earlier had knocked a few temporary holes in the wine list. The house white was still holding up nicely though and a large glass of Grenache (£6.50) was most welcome. My teetotal companion meanwhile loved the sharpness of the Virgin Passionfruit Martini (£4), a winning blend of passionfruit, mango and lime, with a shot glass of sparkling elderflower on the side. We began with warm bread from a local bakery served with savoury ‘Hendo’s’ butter and crispy onions, very moreish, and then starters of a deliciously moist and herby roast chicken and mushroom terrine and a caramelised Jerusalem artichoke soup

Divine inspiration ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS HOUSES A WELL-KEPT SECRET, WRITES SUE BRIFFA. IT’S TIME YOU FOUND OUT WHAT IT WAS. including peppers, peas, onions, sultanas and turmeric. As much as we enjoyed our main course, it was now time for cake. We had both spotted the selection displayed and, whilst we were sufficiently full from the soup and pasty, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. My sister-in-law had the Coffee & Walnut Cake (£3.25) and was served a huge portion of the lightest sponge cake with the most divine buttermilk filling and topping. It was delicious and worthy of a ‘Hollywood Handshake’. I have always been a lover of fruit cake, having enjoyed both making and eating them since my schooldays. I therefore chose Mrs Wilson’s Sticky Fruitcake (£2.85). Goodness me, it was one of the best fruitcakes I have ever tasted. So much so I asked the staff who Mrs Wilson was; I needed to meet her. However, it transpired she lived in the early 1900s, yet thankfully her legacy lives on. We completed our luncheon beak with a cup of Café 1554’s own blend of coffee, aptly named Heavenly Coffee. And it is. Heavenly, that is. Freshly brewed, it has a smooth taste with not a hint of bitterness. We then left Café 1544 to have a wander around one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings, vowing to return very soon. And I urge you to do the same. You won’t regret it.
I RECENTLY had an all-too-rare opportunity to catch up with my sister-in-law for lunch in Sheffield city centre. We wanted a ‘light bite’ but also to indulge our shared sweet tooth and have cake. I met her as she hopped off the tram outside Sheffield Cathedral and we headed straight for Café 1554, situated within the Cathedral directly across from the main door. Since opening its doors in June 2015, the café’s aim has been to bring people into the Cathedral who may otherwise have walked by. A wide selection of dishes with locally sourced ingredients are on offer, ranging from salads and sandwiches to jacket potatoes. On the specials board was a meat and potato pie with gravy plus Sheffield’s own ‘Hendo’s’ (£4.95). The café also offers afternoon tea at £12.95 per person (£25 per couple) with a ‘mini me’ version (£6.50) for the under 12s. We were welcomed by the delightful café assistant Matt, who helped us with our choices. I opted for the Soup of the Day, which was tomato and basil (£3.95). The soup arrived piping hot and had the noticeable home-made taste; the fleshy texture of the tomatoes matching perfectly with the basil. It was served with a hearty portion of fresh brown bread and butter. My sister-in-law chose the cheese and onion pasty (£4.95) which is served with coleslaw and salad. However, after a discussion with Matt the sides were exchanged for a portion of the mixed savoury rice; a particular favourite of hers. The heated pasty was made with light and crisp pastry and the cheesy filling was delicious. The rice had a mixture of flavours

Exhibitions Lines of Beauty: Master Drawings from Chatsworth Until 25 May / Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Featuring works by Carpaccio, Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck and more, this new exhibition is the largest of its kind for over 20 years. Curated by Museums Sheffield in partnership with Chatsworth, it brings together 59 drawings amassed by the first, second and third Dukes of Devonshire, some dating back to the 15th century. When the collection was originally established over 300 years ago, viewing of these works would have been reserved for the social elites of the time. Today, a small selection of drawings are displayed on rotation in the purpose-built Old Master Drawings Cabinet created in 2012 at Chatsworth. Lines of Beauty marks the first time the drawings have been seen in Sheffield since 1966.

Review Run Sister Run Studio Theatre (until 21 March) By Claudia Downs ‘Run Sister Run’ is an arresting ninety minutes of theatre, all the more immersive for its lack of an interval. The show invites you into the tangled and often hilarious inner lives of sisters Connie and Ursula, played to perfection by Lucy Ellinson and Helena Lymbery. Silas Carson and Lucas Button, as Connie’s husband and son respectively, are fantastic, but the emotional weight of the production rests squarely on the shoulders of the sisters. The sisters’ history together unfolds slowly as you are taken on a tour of significant moments in their lives constantly challenging the audience’s perception of each character. The show moves effortlessly from witty back and forth to conflict, examining both the minutiae and the big moments of family life with equal commitment and curiosity. It isn’t afraid to undercut comedy with an unflinching moment of pain, and utilises silence to great effect; it’s the moments where the actors aren’t saying anything that are some of the most powerful. ‘Run Sister Run’ is a very physical show that indulges in its small space. The audience see the mechanics of the play unfold before them, as the actors change clothes, rearrange furniture, and take apart the set. The intimacy between audience and cast is palpable – there is nothing you don’t see. The show uses this proximity to explore the link between physical and emotional connection (and distance) – characters roll around, dance, fight and embrace in equal measure. Whilst this play is hugely engaging for anyone, anyone with a complicated familial relationship will be particularly moved by Connie and Ursula’s story. It asks those difficult questions some viewers will be very familiar with – what does it mean to love someone unconditionally? Where do you draw the line? – in a subtle and graceful way. ‘Run Sister Run’ is in equal measures joyful and heart-breaking; as each scene closes, you have no idea how the next will go.

Destination, Sheffield SCOTS ROCKERS TWIN ATLANTIC HAVE ARRIVED – AND RETURN TO THE LEADMILL ON 11 MARCH WE SPOKE TO SINGER SAM MCTRUSTY. now so they may not like it at first – and we started writing two years ago so we were looking pretty far ahead.” Sam, Ross McNae and Craig Kneale approached this record completely differently on the advice of former producer turned pal Jacknife Lee. He encouraged them to build their own studio and essentially produce the album themselves. So they bought a mountain of equipment they didn’t know how to work, and messed around with it until they made this frighteningly good record. And rather than isolate themselves as they used to when making music, they went the other way completely, surrounding themselves with a barrage of input to reflect the way we all live these days. Sam said: “We used to dim the lights and focus on nothing but the music - this time we did the opposite, looking at movie trailers, Craig’s pictures, our phones, we had a barrage of input because that’s the life we all live now. Everyone is fully stimulated all the time, that’s why there’s so much going on in the songs, that’s by design.” The record’s roots lie in electronica and the band’s surprising – to some – love of dance music. It’s the first time they’ve explored that passion in their own music and the results are incredible. “It’s a whole part of our adulthood that we have never let influence our music before. We are from Glasgow, which is world famous for nights out. It’s got this whole culture where you go to a gig then you go to a club night afterwards. For some reason we had separated the two in our heads. Then it was like a moment of arrival we figured out a way to fuse those two things. That is the BIGGEST influence on the whole thing. “It’s not about us signing to a major label so we’ve made a pop record with snyths on it, on the face of it I can see why some people might think that, but it’s turning a corner in our lives and having an awakening. “We were in our studio in Glasgow and Ross and I had a ‘eureka’ moment where we listened to Felix Da Housecat’s Ready To Wear. Not many people really know that from our world but the sound of that song sparked something, like ‘wait, we could do that but in our own way’. This side of our musical taste has always been there, we just haven’t brought it into what we do before, and it was so stupid. We thought we were only good at this one bit of music so that’s what we need to do. Until now.”
DEVASTATING new album Power has stunned fans with its dramatic shift in style and tone. The gritty guitars of the last record GLA have been swept away by a thunderous wave of glorious synthery, cascading out of your speakers in the most potent, anthemic choruses the band have ever produced. If ever an album was made for festivals, stadiums and arenas, it’s this one. Frontman Sam McTrusty said: “I see it as an arrival rather than a departure. It wasn’t a deliberate plan to be different. We had this new studio with loads of new equipment, we’d lean on something, it would make a cool sound and that would birth a song. It was like being back to the beginning when we started writing and I’d been playing guitar for less than a year, so it was the joy of discovery. We were back to that template of, if you like it just follow it, there are no rules, it doesn’t matter.” “I think fans will get it but if they don’t, that’s cool, things I loved ten years ago I don’t now, you grow in and out of things. To try and make music for people who like what you did before means we are stuck in a loop. We are doing the opposite, we are trying to forecast what people will like six months from

Rome, bloody Rome SHAKESPEARE IS BACK AT THE CRUCIBLE. WE SPEAK TO STELLA GONET, WHO WILL BE CHANNELLING HER INNER JUDY MURRAY AS CORIOLANUS’ MOTHER, VOLUMNIA.

for her son and almost doesn’t care what people think of her.” Stella has spent much of her career living and working in London but it’s only in recent years she’s made the conscious decision to spread her wings a little further. “My daughter said to me ‘my God mum, why don’t you go and do stuff out of London?’ and I said ‘because I was bringing up you darling!” Stella laughs. The impression I get, although she was very early into rehearsals, is that she’s delighted to be here. “It’s a treat [working with Rob Hastie]. What I love was that he was an actor himself so he understands the whole process. He’s also brilliant visually, I can tell that. He’s just very bright, he really understands and he communicates well. I think the people, everyone here that I’ve come across at the Crucible, there’s just such a lovely atmosphere, I think that comes from a good leader. “What’s also wonderful is we have the SPT [Sheffield People’s Theatre] who are involved in the production. So when we have big crowd scenes, we actually have big crowds. That’ll make it very exciting. It’s a property community theatre.” And it’s not just the theatre that has made a big impression on Stella. “I can’t believe how lovely [Sheffield] is. My husband drove me with my bike and dog and we had a few days before he went – there are lovely cafes and food, it’s just really nice.” After the run at the Crucible, Stella will be returning home before expanding her television career further. “I did a series last year where I played Martin Freeman’s mother-in-law in a comedy called Breeders, it’s about to come out on Sky I think, and they’re going ahead with the second series and I start literally, straight after. It’s worked out perfectly. “I’m going from Rome, bloody Rome and all that, straight into comedyland. It’s nice, a great contrast. I’m lucky.” Stella’s not the only lucky one. To have such a highlyreputable and award-winning theatre on your doorstep that continually showcases top-class productions is not just a credit to the people who work at the Crucible but the city itself. No doubt Coriolanus will continue this outstanding legacy.
THE Crucible’s Robert Hastie started his tenure as artistic director with a thrilling production of Julius Caesar in May 2017. It set an extremely high bar of which he has equalled and often surpassed with successive productions – last year’s Life of Pi and Guys and Dolls are perfect examples. Following recent awards for Best Regional Theatre and Achievement in Technical Theatre, this month he has returned to Shakespeare’s tragedies with a modern take on Coriolanus, which is enjoying a run at the Crucible from 6-21 March. Coriolanus, played on this occasion by Da Vinci’s Demons’ Tom Bateman, is the name given to a Roman general after his military success against various uprisings challenging the government of Rome. Propelled to power, he quickly loses the trust of the people and is torn down from his pedestal. Banished at the height of his fury, he unites with an old enemy to bring down the city he once fought for. If you’re put off by Shakespeare, don’t be. This is a story of power, purpose and greed that is all too familiar today. No doubt it will be engaging to the last. Joining Tom on stage will be Stella Gonet, who plays his mother, Volumnia. The Scottish actress is perhaps best known for her roles in House of Eliot and Holby City as well as Casualty, Dalziel and Pascoe and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Her stage credits, of which there are many, has seen her play Ophelia in the 1989 theatre revival of Hamlet, opposite both Daniel Day-Lewis and Ian Charleston, and playing Margaret Thatcher in the original West End production of Handbagged in 2014. “It’s quite a big play to get your head into,” Stella told us as of Coriolanus as she took a break from rehearsals. “It’s kind of military, ambitious, political play – not a lot of nice people in it – but it’s got incredible energy. It’s very cynical as well and I think that is very much of our time.” And being the matriarch of the production is something she’s very keen to get her teeth into. “Volumnia is one of Shakespeare’s more interesting older women,” she adds. “I asked Rob [Hastie] about this at the beginning when we first talked about this, ‘should I be reading the Trojan women or should I be reading Judy Murray’s biography?’ He said ‘definitely Judy Murray!’ “She’s very much an ambitious mother who wants the best

Festival of Debate announces 2020 programme IT RETURNS TO SOUTH YORKSHIRE FOR ITS SIXTH YEAR IN 2020, BRINGING WITH IT OVER 130 PUBLIC EVENTS FROM 14 APRIL TO 31 MAY. who set up the Wigan Deal which transformed how council services interacted with communities. Other speakers include Jason Williamson, the frontman of Sleaford Mods, one of the most politically charged music acts to come out of the UK in recent years, and David Olusoga, the British-Nigerian historian and BBC documentary host. The Festival of Debate is unique not due to its household names but because of how it engages with communities across South Yorkshire. The festival is coordinated by not-for-profit social enterprise Opus Independents and crucially is coprogrammed by over 100 individual partners in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. Most of the events are free to attend, ensuring the festival reaches as large an audience as possible and reduces barriers to attendance. Festival programmer Joe Kriss said: “At a time when Britain has been increasingly polarised along lines of North and South, young and old, left and right, the Festival of Debate creates a critical platform for communities to have these conversations in public. Our hope is that the festival encourages people to participate in their communities and try and make change, together.”
FESTIVAL of Debate is the biggest political festival in the UK, providing an important platform for debating and discussing the key political and social issues of our time at a point when democracy is most at risk. In the UK, 60 per cent of the voting population are unhappy with the way democracy is functioning. The Festival of Debate provides an urgent and necessary platform for communities to come together and discuss what matters to them. This year’s festival includes some of the most important and well-known figures in UK politics and beyond. Keynote speakers include environmental campaigners like the broadcaster and Extinction Rebellion supporter Chris Packham and the journalist George Monbiot. There are household names from politics such as Labour MP David Lammy and well-known commentator Ash Sarkar. There are international stars too, including one of world’s most famous feminists, Gloria Steinem, whose remarkable life and journey at the forefront of the American feminist movement has recently been made into a Hollywood film starring Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander. Closer to home there are campaigners such as Gina Martin, who led the successful campaign to make upskirting illegal, and Donna Hall, the former chief executive of Wigan Council

Not only can the Level 3 qualified PT improve your training (emphasis on the training) regime, she can advise you on nutrition and other things that can enhance your health and wellbeing. Here she talks to Vibe.
We’ve all done it. Come the turn of the new year, with Jools’ Hootenanny still ringing in our ears, we commit to making big improvements in our lives, be that in health, fitness or even career choices. For many, though, this means joining, or returning to, the gym but how long are those good intentions going to last? One month, two months, six months? Maybe more, maybe less. Extending this enthusiasm beyond the honeymoon period – how many of us are paying for gym memberships and not attending? – is made all the more easier with focused goals, and a bit of fun along the way, which is where KikiCProject come in. Based out of PureGym Millhouses, it’s the brainchild of Chiara Albrizio who has combined her passion for fitness with
Tell us about KikiCProject. It began as a blog to journal my own experiences in fitness. Having been obese for most of my life, my confidence was at a low point. I couldn’t stand the person in the mirror. I remember being so inspired by my brother who had started his fitness journey before me and was having some pretty impressive results through nutrition changes and going to the gym. It was both horror about just how low I felt and the sheer admiration for my brother that prompted me to join the same gym I work

What role does confidence play in the gym experience? You gain confidence as you go along; as your skills level increase, you learn to navigate the exercises, the gym environment itself and the people within it. I had a panic attack the very first day at the gym. Couldn’t walk through the doors. If I hadn’t booked a PT consultation with my coach at the time, I had quite probably walked right back home. You may not walk in with confidence, but if you stick to it, get help if you don’t want to do it on your own, you will look back and realise everyone at the gym may be going through something similar or maybe not, but we are all there to get something out of it for ourselves. You’re big into nutrition too. Where does the love of food come from? Twenty years in the restaurant business, being Italian… food has always been a massive part of my life. It’s part of my identity. I love to cook, I love to eat well, I love all the social, sharing aspects of food. How can a nutrition coach benefit your training? A nutrition coach can help you by looking at your behaviours, food intake and help you develop a better nutrition strategy that works for both your lifestyle and your goal. Are more younger people getting on board? The fitness industry is in bloom. With the advent of social media and exposure to more and more information digitally available, the younger generation seem definitely more responsive to the fitness world and I see more and more younger people coming through our doors to start their fitness journey.
at now and begin making changes. Best. Decision. Ever. Through fitness, I started to understand that the root of my unhappiness wasn’t the way I looked per se, but my mindset, attitude towards myself and others and as I started feeling more confident, understanding my behaviours around food, my barriers to exercise and change, I started to fall back in love with myself and also found a new passion.
How can people get involved? Join our gym! Lol. Of course, that’s the first step. I do a monthly assembly with the squad as I am big on creating a community, so when they get to the gym, they know one another and can form bonds to help them feel more comfortable. I usually host these group training events at PureGym Millhouses but I am exploring venues for nutrition and training days.
What’s the difference between training and exercise? Exercise is the baseline that you start from in my opinion, but it doesn’t offer enough progressive overload to really dig deeper into your potential and reach your goals more effectively. Think about going to the same class, week in week out: you will gain massive benefits at the beginning but over time, your body adapts to your outputs and you may find that even though, you find the class challenging, you are not seeing any further results. Training is not the same for everyone; it has to be specific to your goal, to be enjoyable and progressive, it is something you consistently do time and time again, to make the body go past its adaptation points and help you towards your goal. A good training programme, with slow steady progress to more volume, intensity and load consistently over time, offers structure and scope for growth.
How much does it cost? A session with me 1-2-1 starts at £30 per 45 minutes. I offer half hour sessions too, group training or semi-private sessions to share with a friend or online coaching, which relies on you to follow the programme in your own time. How do you find out more? Have a look at my blog-site to get to know me www.thekikicproject.com, connect with me both on Instagram and Facebook @thekikicproject or email me at chiara@thekikicproject.com.
What kind of people do you train? I am lucky to be able to train a variety of individuals, from fatloss clients and running enthusiasts to golf aficionados and climbers. Our squad never fails to motivate me to give more and surely keep me on my toes.

A new season of shows for 2020, including a welcome return for smash-hit musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, has been announced by Sheffield Theatres. The 5k runs take place along a unique route around Crookes Valley Park and Weston Park – the perfect way to spend bank holiday Friday. Runners can enjoy the big stage madness before the run with colour throwing, dancing, singing and a mass warm-up. Those taking part can run or walk the family friendly course, and get doused with colour and music at each colour throwing station on the route. A £2 donation from all tickets sold will go directly to support Sheffield Youth Homelessness charity, Roundabout. The event is the brainchild of Student Colour Run promoter, Neil Midgley, who has seen the popularity of his Student Colour Run events growing significantly over the past five years, with more families looking to take part each year. By creating an event specifically for families, Neil hopes to encourage those with younger children to join the fun too. Neil commented: “Why should students have all the fun? Our Family Colour Run is a great way for the whole family to get involved, from babies in pushchairs to groups of school friends and their families, to grandparents - our event is inclusive and promises to be colourful fun for everyone. The donation to Roundabout to support their work tackling youth homelessness in the city is something my family is passionate about, and I know the whole of Sheffield will join with us in that”. Theo’s Walk and Picnic
50th anniversary
Young children and toddlers are set to go to the distance to help build a new Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Theo’s Walk and Picnic is returning following the success of last year’s event. The Children’s Hospital Charity are once again calling on families, nurseries and toddler groups from across the region to get involved throughout the month of May. Among those who took part were childminders and longtime friends Clare White, Amanda Dale and Marie Langley. A total of nine children under their care took part in a walk and picnic in Sherwood Pines forest in Nottinghamshire last year. Thanks to the walking and attention spans of all involved, the group raised over £1,000 for The Children’s Hospital Charity. There are no set rules on the challenge. It can be of any length, inside or outside, nearby or far away. Once registered, participants will receive a free fundraising pack which includes a handy guide, sponsorship forms, stickers and even a tasty picnic recipe! Children who raise £1 will receive a special Theo Bear badge, those that raise £30 receive their own Theo Bear and events which raise over £150 go into a draw to win a visit from Theo Bear himself with lots of goodies from The Children’s Hospital Charity. Register at www.tchc.org.uk/events to receive your free fundraising pack.
