spreading over 21 years of business giving a wealth of knowledge. Their determination and professionalism is what you need to help and guide you. “Proactive, innovative, positive and caring” are the words that Joanne Bloor and her team use. Last year Bloor & Co implemented a re-brand, which included the introduction of reflective boards to enhance low light visibility - an industry first which is a guaranteed head-turner. Further services also see Bloor & Co doing personal walkthrough video chats, enabling a prospective buyer or tenant to be more interactive in the viewing, than a standard video click through, as the agent can chat with them directly at the time. Getting the job done is paramount to Bloor & Co.

DOROTHY RECALLS WAR MEMORIES AHEAD OF D-DAY ANNIVERSARY. 95-year-old living at a Crosspool care home has revealed the role she played in D-Day ahead of the 77th anniversary of the Normandy landings on 6 June. Dorothy, who lives at The Porterbrook, a residential, dementia and respite care in Tapton Crescent Road, worked as a leading aircraftsman/woman (LAC) stationed at RAF Valley – a Royal Air Force station on the island of Anglesey in Wales. She went on to become a maintenance engineer and would also marshal pilots in as they took off and landed, including those involved in the D-Day operations of 1944. Dorothy, who was born in Sheffield, said: “I tried twice to run away from home to sign up when I was 16 and 17 but each time my mother found me and brought me home because I was too young. I was desperate to join the war and do my bit as my elder brother, Alexander, was already a fighter pilot in the RAF. “As soon as my 18th birthday came, I left home and enlisted. I always felt it was my duty to do something. The worst part about my job was thinking the pilots

A

may not come back when we saw them off, but sheer elation when they did.” Dorothy says her best memories were meeting and working with American and Canadian pilots who were also stationed

at Anglesey. She said: “Those were the best days of my life as I was taught new skills and had to learn quickly. I felt I was doing a proper job for my country. Everyone pulled together and got on with it. After the war, I stayed in the RAF and joined the famous band as the lead drummer.” Three generations of Dorothy’s family have been in the RAF but her granddaughter, Cassandra, has broken rank and is currently serving in the Royal Navy. Dorothy moved to The Porterbrook, which has a 9.1 rating on leading care home review website, carehome.co.uk, in April 2020. She added:“The best thing about living at The Porterbrook is seeing the friends I have made here every day and the fact I do not have to worry about anything here as everything is catered for.” The Porterbrook care home manager Sheilagh Sweeney said: “We love having Dorothy living with us at The Porterbrook and hearing about her stories from the War. She is a true hero and everyone is very fond of her.” For more information call Sheilagh on 0114 266 0808, email info@theporterbrookcare.com or visit www.theporterbrookcare.com

Platinum recognition Local business pledges to help children’s hospice Local business Global Windows has nominated Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as its Charity of the Year, pledging to donate £5 for every installation it carries out. Since 2008, Bluebell Wood has been supporting children with life limiting illnesses, both in their own homes and at their hospice in North Anston. They currently care for around 300 families across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Derbyshire and parts of North Lincolnshire, providing family respite care, sibling support, music therapy, physiotherapy, end of life care and bereavement support. Based in Sheffield, Global Windows specialises in double glazing, supplying its customers with windows, doors and conservatories. They’ve worked in the local area for over 20 years, helping Yorkshire homeowners make the most out of their properties, and today carry out around 60 to 80 installations every month. “For every installation, we’ll be donating £5 to Bluebell Wood, helping them to fund activities for families to create special memories together, including soft play, sensory activities, play and music therapy, outdoor fun, and so much more,” comments Global Windows Joint Managing Director Liam Hulme. “At Global Windows, we’re dedicated to delivering great products and services to our customers, but as a local, family run business, we also understand the importance of giving back to the community. “Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is a home from home for families facing the toughest of times, and by making a regular donation for every installation we carry out, we hope we can help make a difference to many children’s lives.” Sally Baker, Regional Fundraiser at Bluebell Wood, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Global Windows will be supporting us over the next 12 months. The past year has been incredibly challenging from a fundraising perspective, so the support of community-spirited local businesses like Global Windows is more important than ever. “Each and every penny raised through this exciting new partnership will help us to be a light in the darkness for local children and families who are facing some of the toughest times imaginable. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Global Windows for their support and we’re very much looking forward to working closely with them in the weeks and months ahead.” To learn more about Global Windows’ partnership with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, visit www.globalwindows.co.uk and www.bluebellwood.org. 22 www.sheffieldvibe.com

For the sixth consecutive year, Sheffield-based B. Braun Medical Ltd has been recognised with the Platinum Award from the Pennies from Heaven Employee Workplace Giving Scheme. B. Braun received the Platinum Award for demonstrating ‘commendable commitment and generosity’ in the fundraising sector, with over 60 per cent of their employees signing up for the micro-giving scheme which rounds down their salary each month to donate up to 99p to charity. David Oates, Group Managing director of B. New Era Square at St Mary’s Gate features restaurants, street food kiosks, the city’s largest oriental supermarket and shops – all located around a modern public square with iconic panda art installations. Developer Jerry Cheung said the 430,000 sq ft development promises to be an exciting destination for visitors looking to discover somewhere new and exciting to socialise following 12 months of lockdowns. “New Era Square blends the dynamism and energy of modern China and South East Asia with the best of Western culture,” explained Sheffield businessman Jerry. “Despite the difficulties posed by Covid, we’ve completed the development only two months later than planned and the site is now almost fully let. This summer, visitors can look forward to shopping relaxing, socialising and connecting again over food and drink in our vibrant and attractive public square.”

Two new faces for expanding CODA Architecture team Award-winning Sheffield company CODA Architecture has welcomed two new faces to its team. Sheffield born Lara is now looking forward to working in her first architectural role at CODA Architecture. “Due to rising confidence in the industry and a significant increase in new projects, we are delighted to welcome these two new members to our team,” said Managing Director Matt Bowker. “Donald and Lara are valuable additions to the CODA Architecture and will bring further experience and enthusiasm to our growing team in Sheffield.”

Tech for teaching Sowmya Mony, from Sheffield, is using her background as a software developer to inspire more young women into STEM as she trades tech for teaching, supported by Transition to Teach. Transition to Teach is a Department for Education funded initiative which enables eligible career changers, those at risk of redundancy and early retirees to train for new teaching careers. Recruitment for the 2021 programme beginning in September is now underway across the Yorkshire region. Using the Hogan Personality Assessment,Transition to Teach identify participant strengths and help to support with potential challenges participants may face in teaching. Analysis of data from the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) across the two Transition to Teach cohorts (2020 and 2019) has revealed that the main motivation for candidates to move into teaching is the desire for a career where they feel they are helping and supporting others, or adding to the greater good of society.

particularly affecting the older generation with the average age of a victim being 75. The need for trusted, independent advice has never been greater. Hamnett Wealth’s Director, Jonathan Rowley, is a SOLLA accredited Independent Financial Adviser. SOLLA is a not-for-profit organisation founded to make sure older people and their families get the very best advice when it comes to financial planning for later life. SOLLA members keep up-to-date with the fast-moving world of financial fraud and can help to spot the signs of scams. They are dedicated to providing the right advice and with a full understanding of the issues affecting older people and their families. Hamnett Wealth Management has also committed to the Financial Vulnerability Taskforce Charter which aims to promote a greater understanding of vulnerability, encourage appropriate behaviours and establish good practice amongst personal finance professionals in respect of people who find themselves in vulnerable circumstances. The recent Budget was one of tax pain largely deferred. Mr. Sunak was never going to introduce significant tax increases as economic recovery is the priority. The proposals of most interest were: • The addition of £70 to the personal allowance and £200 increase in the basic rate band, in line with indexation requirements. However, after 2021/22, the personal allowance and higher rate threshold (outside Scotland) will be frozen for four tax years. • The inheritance tax nil rate band, the pensions lifetime allowance and the capital gains tax annual exemption will all be frozen at their current levels for the next five tax years. These freezes, along with rising property prices across the UK, mean that investment values are growing, putting more people at risk of falling into the inheritance tax net. The Government raise billions each year from people sleep walking into higher and higher taxes. It is time to act. No matter how large or how modest, everyone has an estate and you will want to control how it is administered to the people or organisations

you care most about. There are lots of points to consider such as making a will, appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney or nominating a pension beneficiary. It is important to plan ahead with confidence in order to minimise the tax burden for your family and loved ones in the future. The world has never seen as much coordinated stimulus as in the past nine months. This sets the stage for a strong economic recovery across the world in 2021. Markets have already put COVID-19 behind them and have been largely positive since January. Biden wasted no time in unveiling a $1.9 trillion stimulus package and the UK have announced more measures to protect badly affected businesses. Companies know that the end is in sight and they also know that consumers are itching to spend as soon as they can. However, returns on bank and building society accounts are falling to a minimum and interest rates and inflation are picking up. All of this suggests now is the time for a financial review so that you are ready for the recovery. During the Covid-19 pandemic, financial scams have been a growing problem,

Hamnett Wealth Management offer a free consultation where you can gain an independent and professional second opinion on your financial arrangements. Do you know what your current advisor is charging you in fees? Recent press reports have highlighted several cases of people moving their portfolios and pensions from a certain provider because they have been subjected to high fees, poor service and a lack of transparency. Maybe you’ve lost touch with your financial advisor, are unsure of how your portfolio is performing or are looking to minimise the fees you are paying - our Advisors can review your finances and look at alternate ways for you to get a good return on your savings and pensions. We keep our costs to a minimum and because we are independent, we don’t need to worry about shareholders. We can then pass these savings onto our clients, meaning that our fees are cheaper than the large corporate companies. Our office is operating as normal but we can also offer appointments in the comfort of your own home, by telephone or by Facetime, Microsoft teams and Zoom. Please call us on 0114 235 3500 to arrange a free initial meeting.

Making sense of complex affairs BY RICHARD KING, HEAD OF THE WEALTH MANAGEMENT TEAM AT SHEFFIELD SOLICITORS, TAYLOR&EMMET LLP. he role of solicitors is changing. Clients’ affairs, particularly those with considerable wealth, are becoming increasingly complex and we are having to adapt our services accordingly. My “day job” is to lead our large probate team. Where once we might have been called upon to simply write and administer a will, many of our clients now require a multifaceted approach to planning for the future. It can include advice on large property portfolios, commercial interests and overseas assets, etc. and may involve

T

Richard King, head of the wealth management team

input from numerous colleagues across our firm. It became apparent that we needed to find a way to handle these complex, high value estates in a simplified, streamlined manner. The result is the launch of our dedicated wealth management team. This new department sits under the umbrella of probate, but brings together experts from a range of legal disciplines, including family law, residential property and litigation. We work together, along with trusted external specialists, when necessary, to ensure high net worth estates are structed effectively and

efficiently to reflect your current circumstances and plans for the future. Our services are wide ranging and tailored specifically to the needs of each client. They include private wealth structuring, succession planning, family business consulting and cross-border estates, to name but a few. We believe by bringing together different legal disciplines, we can make life easier for you and provide an efficient, discrete, personal service focused on the needs of wealthy individuals. Although we’ve created a new department to focus specifically on this type of work, it is a service we have been offering for many years. We are proud of the longstanding relationships we have built with families, many spanning multiple generations, who appreciate our ability to manage their affairs with sensitivity and attention to detail. It is thanks largely to referrals from these clients that the need to launch a dedicated wealth management team has arisen. As word spreads, we are seeing increasing numbers of new enquiries from across the UK. This has prompted the next step in Taylor&Emmet’s growth, the addition of premises in London’s Covent Garden, from where we will be able extend our services across the south. Our wealth management professionals are happy to meet clients wherever and whenever it is most convenient, including our offices in Dronfield and Bakewell, as well as those in Sheffield. Thanks to the advancements we’ve made in technology in the past 12 months, confidential discussions can also take place remotely, where appropriate. To find out more about the bespoke wealth management services we offer to high net worth and ultra-high net worth individuals, don’t hesitate to contact me on 0114 218 4000 or visit: www.tayloremmet.co.uk/private-wealth

Get a better, healthier night’s sleep COURTESY OF WOOLROOM, THE UK’S LEADING WOOL BEDDING SPECIALIST. e honest, how well do you sleep? There are many reasons for why we should be focussing on getting a better night’s slumber, something that has proved particularly elusive for many people over the last 12 months. To name but a few; a good night’s sleep can drastically reduce stress, improve your memory, reduced cravings for calorific foods and improve brain function. Put simply, a good night’s sleep will ensure you’re functioning as well as possible. What many don’t consider when investing in sleep, however, is bedding and the many ways choosing the right type of product can benefit your health. British wool, for instance, is scientifically proven to deliver a better, healthier night’s sleep and whether you invest in a wool pillow, duvet, mattress topper or even a mattress protector, you can be confident that the entire range of bedding from Woolroom will be kind to your sleep, as well as being kind to the environment. Founded in 2008, Woolroom is the UK’s leading wool bedding specialist and has developed a reputation for being the go-to retailer for enabling a better night’s ‘clean sleep’, owing to its temperature

regulating, hypoallergenic and chemical-free properties. This reputation for providing an all-natural sleep solution, not just in the UK but in countries such the USA and Iceland, has seen Woolroom recently honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, one of the most prestigious business awards in the country. Chris Tattersall, managing director of Woolroom, said: “We are immensely proud to have been selected as a winner for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, it has been a team effort delivering such a great increase in international trade over the last three years and I would like to

thank my team for all their hard work, particularly through the challenges of the pandemic. “We would encourage anyone thinking about entering for this year’s award to go for it – it is a great way of elevating British business on 40 www.sheffieldvibe.com

an international platform. As our business continues to grow, we will most definitely be applying for another one in years to come.” The real highlight in all their products is the beautiful British wool they use, which is the most sustainable fibre in the world. More recently Woolroom has developed a partnership with Woolkeepers to deliver fully traceable wool back to the farm showcasing its natural sustainable benefits while at the same time supporting British farmers and paying a better than market price for the wool. “We support hardworking British farmers by sourcing our wool from British farms,” added Chris. “We have some of the finest in the world, and we’re proud of the high standards of animal welfare they follow to make wool as kind as it is comfortable. For your peace of mind, we don’t source wool from anywhere that doesn’t guarantee healthy, happy animals.” Find out more by visiting www.thewoolroom.com, pop into the Peak Shopping Village store, or Peak Shopping Village clearance outlet where you can save up to 70 per cent off the RRP. here’s something cosy and comforting about those charming tins of boiled fruit sweets that have played an essential part in so many of our adventures, from family day trips to the coast to long-haul flights to the other side of the world. But when Leslie Simpkin returned to his Sheffield home from the First World War with the germ of an idea to produce and sell glucose sweets, he immediately hit upon a recipe for success that has seen his family business thrive over the last 100 years. Simpkins Travel Sweets were first produced in 1921 and are still in demand all over the world, with loyal customers in 40 countries as far afield as Colombia, Japan, Australia, the USA and Malaysia. From its base in Hillsborough, Simpkins has remained strictly under family control and now a third generation is steering the ship with Adrian Simpkin and his sister Karen, grandchildren of Leslie, at the helm as joint managing directors. Ask Adrian about the secret of his family business’ long-standing success and he insists it’s all about the product. “It is solely that we make a bloody good sweet,” he says. “A lot of boiled sweets make your mouth sore but we use only the finest ingredients and the taste and texture is spot on.” No doubt satisfied customers across the globe would agree, but the Simpkins success story is also about innovation and a steady stream of smart business ideas that set them apart from their competitors.

T

made in sheffield In retrospect one of grandfather Leslie’s smartest moves from the outset was deciding not to take on the major sweet manufacturers, including near neighbours Bassetts, in fighting for shelf space in mainstream sweet shops and food halls. All Simpkins products contained glucose boiled sweets – more popularly known as barley sugars – and these were believed to help cure travel sickness. Glucose was also regarded as a medicinal product – Leslie had seen it being given to wounded soldiers when he was treated for shrapnel wounds. So the aim was to place Simpkins sweets in chemist shops, building up a market share while avoiding competition with larger manufacturers. Business boomed and within three years they had achieved 80 per cent coverage in the UK with 12,000 separate accounts. Today, distribution has increased to include railway stations, motorway services and airports, not only in the UK but worldwide. The key to success in foreign markets was the development of the travel tin, a relatively airtight canister that meant sweets did not go sticky too quickly in hot climates. Simpkins has been exporting for over 80 years, originally to the old Commonwealth countries. Then in the 1950s the invention of the

seamless can meant sweets could remain fresh for years. This handily coincided with the rise in trade overseas, particularly Japan. “They did not see a lot of European confectionary after World War Two. We sold very well, not only in Japan but throughout the Far East, and it became quite a status symbol to receive a tin of Simpkins sweets as a gift,” says Adrian. “And now they are becoming popular again with a new generation of Japanese kids. For them the appeal is retro.” Simpkins has never strayed from its home in Hillsborough, and it is from within this modest-looking business premises in the heart of S6 that a stream of bright ideas has helped keep the business afloat through good times and bad. Recent innovations included a new Botanicals range of sweets for venues like garden centres, and a special tin for the Royal British Legion. “We’re both 100 years old and it’s a cause very close to our hearts as there’s a strong military tradition in our family,” adds Adrian. Then there is the private label work for secondary brands. One recent deal was with another long-standing British sweet manufacturer, Taverners Tangerine Confectionary. Simpkins now manufacture all their travel tubs. There are also other sweet treats made by Simpkins such as the hugely successful Nipits range of liquorice pellets, which again come in a smartly designed tin. Popular with public speakers and choir members, they are said to clarify the voice and clear the throat.

Making the sweets at the Hillsborough factory

It all seems to point to a bright future, but Adrian is hoping the struggle to survive during the lockdown of the last 12 months is well and truly consigned to the history books. He recalls being stranded in the middle of an important marketing trip overseas: “In March last year I was in Tokyo for an exhibition. It was cancelled so I flew to Manilla and on to the Philippines for my next appointment. I went to bed and woke up to a lockdown. Australia was my next appointment but they announced quarantine so I had to come home “We tried to carry on with business as usual when the lockdown was

announced but a 16-week order book just vanished. We make travel sweets and suddenly travel just stopped and the airports, railway stations and motorway services were deserted.” So production had to be curtailed but they carried on with a skeleton staff, orders started coming back in early summer and they were able to bring staff back out of furlough. There are no big plans for a party or celebration to mark Simpkins’ centenary year but Adrian believes that having come through a very testing year the future looks bright. “We’ve survived recessions, pandemics and world wars… I think we are bullet proof.”

COMPETITION To celebrate 100 years of success, A.L. Simpkins & Co. of Sheffield are offering 12 tins of their distinctive and world famous travel sweets for a prize in our special competition. To win, simply visit www.rmcmedia.co.uk/comp etitions and answer the following question: In what year were Simpkins Travel Sweets first produced? Closing date 31 May. All correct entries will be entered into a prize draw and the winner will be notified by email.

Transforming lives A SPORT-INSPIRED SOCIAL ENTERPRISE, SOON TO BE LAUNCHED IN SHEFFIELD, IS ENCOURAGING ADULTS TO ENJOY A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIFE FOR LONGER. port has a great knack of bringing people together – and bringing out the best in them. It was something that Anthony Blackburn was keen to exploit and use when he launched his social enterprise, Golf In Society, five years ago. Inspired by his father’s love of sport, who sadly passed away 12 years ago, Golf In Society aims to support families living with dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke, loneliness and depression through golf – and it’s launching in Sheffield in early July. “Whether you’re living with a chronic illness, a carer seeking a break from the challenges of unpaid care, or someone who is trying to get their life back on track, we offer you the chance to do so

at your local golf club,” said Anthony. As well as providing a platform for people to connect with those in similar situations the aim for the social enterprise is to transform lives by encouraging people to participate in golf, regardless of whether they have played before, and ultimately enjoy a healthier, happier life for longer. With a track record of delivering over 650 golf sessions behind them, Golf In Society are also fulfilling a desire to make golf more accessible - and more often - to families across the UK. Working with Sheffield City Trust, Golf In Society will be launching their sessions at Tinsley Park and Birley golf courses, which range from one-to-one coaching to group sessions with prices

starting from £10 per hour. The sessions will be all-inclusive, anyone is welcome and are the perfect tonic for those wanting to take steps to better health and wellbeing. Golf is a great game to get involved with at any stage of life, regardless of age or ability. In fact, over 50 per cent of the families who have taken part in the Golf In Society sessions had never played the sport before. As well as the physical benefits, the mental benefits are equally important too; there’s a great social side to the game and the sessions put on by Anthony and his team create lasting connections and a sense of belonging. “We put our golfers and their families at the heart of everything we do,” added Anthony. “We put them in charge of where their journey begins, where they want it to take them, and how it ends. To us it’s important that the golf sessions become part of people’s weekly routine, something they look forward to, as well as giving carers the chance to plan their lives, knowing that they can rely on us for their regular respite break. “From the first welcome to departure, we treat everyone with the dignity, respect and compassion they deserve. During each session people enjoy moderate physical exercise, learn new skills, socialise with new friends, improve their self-esteem and get the chance to chat about their favourite topics. “The combination of physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and respite support is proving to be a very special recipe.” Indeed, as the nation slowly emerges from the pandemic, the demand for Golf In Society’s services is greater than ever before, with inactivity, loneliness, depression and poor mental health all at record levels. This is a great way to address these problems, build connections and create a sense of purpose. Of the hundreds of sessions that Golf In Society has delivered so far, there‘s been no shortage of feedback and some touching stories. For example, Ben, whose father Norman was introduced to golf by the social enterprise, left this message: “Anthony - you radically changed for the better the last 18 months of my dad’s life after he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. For that, my family and I will be eternally grateful. Best of luck for the future, noone will believe how good it is until they see it for themselves!”

John, from Rudding Park, shared similar sentiments: “I had never played golf before and Golf In Society has introduced me to a sport I really enjoy. The days are brilliantly organised, the facilities are excellent and the camaraderie among the other people who are going through what I’m having to deal with is fantastic.” As well as looking for people to participate in their sessions, Golf In Society are also looking for potential partners and investors to share their social mission, volunteers to work as ‘golf buddies’, and ambassadors to help them share their story. By doing this,

they will be able to provide more families with the opportunity to enjoy a happier, healthier life at their local golf club. To find out how you can help or take part in the new Sheffield sessions, contact Anthony Blackburn on 07491 694938, email golfinsociety@gmail.com or visit golfinsociety.com.

The Ultimate indulgence MARK THE RETURN TO ‘NORMAL’ LIFE WITH A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER. ou could almost hear the creaking of the trapdoors as they were cautiously raised by those sheltering within. “Could it really be over?” were the words on everyone’s lips as they emerged into daylight, blinking at the glare. It was true. Now everyone could get down to the gym and hone that waistline expanded by endless takeaways, have the

hair grown to Rapunzel-like length finally shorn and even call in for a quick half at the local on the way home. That, at least, was the scenario envisaged by the newspapers, nearly all of whom ran special features along the lines of the Top 25 things to do after lockdown. If there is anything good to emerge from the pandemic, it is that it forced us

all to look again at the way we spend our leisure time. If you really are waiting on the starting blocks for the pub to open, or yearning for hairdresser-talk once again. (“Are you booked on yer holidays yet”?) then who are we to argue otherwise. But if you are looking to mark the return to normal life with a weekend to remember, here are a few suggestions.

Coastal Weekend Devon is a county offering sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. The English county is also highlighting itself as a ‘foodie tourist’ destination. The combination of moorland grazing, rich

arable soil and coastal waters provides a wide range of fresh local produce. This includes grass-fed cattle and free range poultry, fresh fruit and vegetables, rapeseed and seaweed and local fish and shellfish. There are also the Devonshire cream teas along with breweries and traditional pubs. Salcombe Brewery was founded in 2016

and has a reputation for award-winning beer. A visit to the brewery for a tour or Brew Day is the way to learn more about their ales and how they are created. If spirits are more your thing, why not visit Salcombe Distilling Company? Inspired by the coastal vitality of Salcombe and its shipbuilding heritage for exotic trading routes, Salcombe Distilling creates spirits at its waterside distillery one of the world’s only distilleries directly accessible by boat. Launched in 2016, its collection of spirits is distilled on ‘Provident’, a 450l bespoke copper pot still and the Gin School offers visitors the chance to learn about distillation and create you own bottle of gin. A family business run by the Dart brothers, Dart Farm is a working farm that sells its home-grown produce through the farm shop. It is located overlooking the Clyst Valley in Topsham and offers bikes to cycle along the 26-mile track and discover the beautiful Exe Estuary.

Likewise, the gracious, Grade I-listed building maintains all its Georgian glory. Hulbert has given rooms and communal areas a swoon-worthy rethink, riffing on saucy 17th-century society, the powdered chalky complexions of the

Georgian gentry, and Jane Austen’s favourite colour, powder blue. Four former hotel rooms have been reconfigured to form two decadent suites, perfect for families seeking space to relax in, or couples and friends wanting extra space to play with. Reflecting the owners’ love of great British dining, the hotel’s relaxed restaurant sparkles from its Hulbertmasterminded makeover and showcases chef Matt Gillard’s delicious ‘Wild British’ cuisine. Chef ’s refined comfort food champions the best local produce, meat and fish. You can also unwind in the spa, which has six tranquil treatment rooms include the new Copper room, set in an original vaulted cellar and starring a beautiful round copper bath, used for specialist rituals and couples’ treatments. Exhibition Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things Until 4 July Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Cecil Beaton’s glittering portraits from a golden age are brought together at the Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery this spring in a major new exhibition direct from the National Portrait Gallery, London. Bright Young Things presents a dazzling leading cast of society figures, artists, writers and partygoers, each seen through the prism of Beaton’s portraits. Featuring 150 works, many of which are 70 www.sheffieldvibe.com

seldom exhibited, the images on display offer a joyous, playful spectacle of costumed theatricality and unbridled creativity. The exhibition in Sheffield, which comes after the pandemic sadly brought the original run in London to a close after just one week, is a rare opportunity to see these remarkable portraits together on such a scale. Beaton’s celebrated sitters, to many of whom he would become close, would help refine his photographic style throughout these early years – actors and anglophiles Tallulah Bankhead and Anna May Wong, writer Daphne du Maurier, glamorous socialites Edwina Mountbatten and Diana Guinness (née Mitford), artist and friend Stephen

Tennant, set and costume designer Oliver Messel, composer William Walton, modernist poets Iris Tree and Nancy Cunard, among many others. Brought to vivid life, each portrait has a remarkable story to tell. While some of the faces on display may be less well known, their stories are no less fascinating – those of style icons Paula Gellibrand, the Marquesa de Casa Maury and Baba, Princesse de FaucignyLucinge, the eccentric composer and aesthete Lord Berners, modernist poet Brian Howard, who was in part the inspiration for Brideshead Revisited’s Anthony Blanche, ballet dancer Tilly Losch and Dolly Wilde, Oscar’s equally flamboyant niece.

Back to the Roxy

A Quiet Place 2

26 June O2 Academy One of Sheffield’s most famous nightclubs returns for one night to celebrate the city’s first weekend of freedom. With a capacity in excess of 2,000, and one of the most jaw-dropping lightshows in the country, few venues were more high profile than the Roxy that reigned supreme in Sheffield in the 1980s and 1990s. The nightclub became famous nationally as one of the venues for the ‘Hitman & Her’ TV series. Everyone from Kylie Minogue to the London Boys performed there. Dirty Stop Out’s Neil Anderson that is helping organise the event said: “This really is the weekend we’ve been praying for since the first lockdown. Our ‘Back to The Roxy’ event really is set to be one of the biggest parties Sheffield has ever seen.” The reunion party is also set to raise hundreds for the region’s most needy kids through its support of Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids. The party is set to take place in the Roxy venue’s former Arundel Street home which is now the 02 Academy. Tickets are £10 and available from https://www.gigantic.com

4 June Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realise the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. Emily Blunt returns in this sequel to the surprise 2018 hit.

TV Disney+ has the pick of new streaming content this month with the addition of Raya and the Last Dragon (4 June) to its regular listing and the launch of new Marvel TV series, Loki (11 June). The latter sees Tom Hiddlestone reprise his role as the Asgardian God of Mischief in events that follow Avengers: Endgame, resulting in a confrontation with the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Owen Wilson also stars. Across on Amazon Prime, their popular All or Nothing series turns its attention to the New Zealand All Blacks (1 June).

Luca 18 June Disney Pixar’s latest adventure take us to the Italian Riviera, where an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer and Maya Rudolph lend their voices.

In The Heights 18 June Musical lovers can marvel at this feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. It stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace.

Theatre Dangerous Liaisons 15-19 June / Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk A story of sexual power, cruelty and deceit. In 18th century France, letters fly between the mansions of two bored aristocrats as they spin a web of heartbreak and ruin. It might seem like a game, but lives will be ruined and love irrevocably lost. From the original scandalous novel, the acclaimed film starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer and iconic retelling Cruel Intentions, this dangerous story has been thrilling audiences for over 200 years. Now Northern Ballet bring their bodiceripping adaptation back to the stage. Performed with minimal set and full costumes, the ballet is set to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Friendsical 22-23 June / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Friendsical is an original and unique new parody musical inspired by the gang in ‘Friends’, the iconic TV show. When Ross’s wife leaves him for another woman, he fears he will never find love again. But then Rachel runs

back into his life… will he end up with his one true love? With original new songs such as ‘(He’s her) Lobster!’, ‘Richard’s Moustache’ and ‘You’re Over Me, When Were You Under Me?’, the gang take on naked Thursdays, a power cut, and a dinosaur convention!

Chicago 22-26 June / Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate,Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score with one show-stopping song after another includes “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. www.sheffieldvibe.com 71

Perfect partnership TWO LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESSES HAVE JOINED TOGETHER TO OPEN A NEW BUTCHERY AND DELI. iversity is the cornerstone to the success of many businesses, particularly those long-standing ones that have stood the test of time. Take Whites of Calver, for example. This family business was started by current owner Edward White’s grandfather, E.T. White, just over 100 years ago and has occupied the same site at Calver crossroads since the Second World War. It now encompasses a petrol station, coffee shop and bodega-cumfarm shop. The multi award-winning Whites Calver has even caught the eye of National Retailers using it as a benchmark for innovation, diversification and quality of offering. Edward took full control of the business in 2001 with a vision to “develop a bodega with a farm shop feel, showcasing a comprehensive range of local produce”. Working with local suppliers, including The Bridge Bakehouse, John Hattersley Wines, Wye Bakehouse and Thornbridge Brewery. With a clear focus on local sustainability, Edward has taken the next step in enhancing Whites Calver appeal. Fischer’s of Baslow is another local family business and a name synonymous with fine dining. Having opened in 1988 by Max and Susan Fischer, the restaurant and 11-bedroom hotel has been both highly accoladed by Michelin for over 30 years, and been a destination venue, not just for people living in Derbyshire but much further afield too. Like many hospitality businesses, the last 12 months have been challenging to say the least and Fischer’s have had to find new ways to reach their discerning clientele. This started with Fischer’s at Home and a new exclusive partnership with Whites of Calver. “It was an old concept we revisited

D

from 20 years ago,” said Neil Fischer, son of Max and Susan. “We didn’t want to deliver takeaway meals as we couldn’t guarantee the quality so instead looked at dishes that customers could cook at home. Once we had decided what these would be, we needed a suitable outlet to sell them and Whites of Calver fitted the bill perfectly.” With a shared ethos for locallysourced, fresh produce, the Fischer’s at Home meals have been a huge success, complementing the existing suppliers and even attracting new clientele. Popular dishes have included fish pie, beef bourguignon and dauphinoise potatoes. Keen to build on this success, the twofamily businesses have now strengthened their bond further with the opening of a new Fischer & Co-branded butchery and deli, which opened on 22 March. Headed up by a Fischer’s dedicated team, complimented with it’s butcher Richard, with over 40 years’ experience! The all new concession which features prominently at Whites Calver, showcases the very best butchery Derbyshire has to offer. From hand-reared “Baslow Beef ” reared on Gorse Bank Farm above Baslow to, the finest pork, reared in Tideswell and not forgetting the Derbyshire lamb, hand-picked weekly at market. To complement, Neil and team have sourced the very finest produce

Neil Fischer and Edward White

from smoked and cured meats to seasonal cheeses as well as ‘grab and go’ items such as freshly made sandwiches, hot sausage rolls and pies. “I’ve always wanted to open a butchery but it was always about finding the right partner,” said Edward. “With Neil, and Fischer’s, we have found that. They have superb links to the local area and suppliers which is reflected in the produce you’ll find at the butchery and across the deli shelves. The high quality local fresh produce complemented by store cupboard must-haves means there is something for everyone. “In today’s world, were more than just a farm shop. A retail space that can supply your every need with the very best produce at a price point that won’t break the bank!” There’s certainly no standing still for Whites of Calver, and now with Fischer & Co on board, no doubt there’s lots more to come. Confetti

Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... KATERINA VYURKOVA LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY.

Three months before:

Two months before:

Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 government-approved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the postceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.

Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance.

76 www.sheffieldvibe.com

One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.

077 WSide June21 11/05/2021 13:49 Page 1

Two weeks before: ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end.

One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off.The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream.

The greatest day MAKE IT A DAY TO REMEMBER WITH INSPIRATION FROM THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES AND VENUES.

Classic choice LEARN MORE ABOUT PEARLS, COURTESY OF PA JEWELLERY. earls are a classic jewellery choice, the birthstone for June and the gift of choice for 30th wedding anniversaries. When choosing them you will probably notice that prices vary quite considerably, and it is not always immediately obvious why, so here are some of the features to look out for. Firstly, freshwater cultured pearls generally cost less than saltwater cultured pearls. One reason for this is that multiple freshwater pearls may be grown at the same time in the same mussel whereas saltwater cultured pearls can only be grown singly. You can learn more about this in our blog, ‘Pearls: A Cultured Choice’ on our website. Pearls come in a surprisingly wide range of shades: like going to a DIY store and finding an entire shelf of cream paints! They have a body colour and secondary overtones: white may err towards yellowish or pinkish while black pearls will often have strong overtones of purple or green. Some pearls may display a characteristic iridescent effect called orient with shimmering colours appearing to float across the surface; this can be very attractive. The most desirable shape for a pearl is perfectly round. However, off-round to

P

80 www.sheffieldvibe.com

button shapes are popular for stud earrings as they sit neatly, while symmetrical drop-shaped pearls are perfect for earrings or pendants. Increasingly unusual, baroque shapes can give a more relaxed look; they make a good choice if you want a less formal necklace. A perfectly smooth surface is preferable, but most pearls will have blemishes of some kind. These can range from tiny indentations to significant ridges affecting the overall shape. Minor blemishes can be hidden by placing a drill hole or setting in the correct position, while major ridges or chips can be

more problematic and decrease desirability and value considerably. Pearls have a lustre that is aptly described as ‘pearly’, but it can still vary. A brighter, more reflective lustre is associated with thicker nacre layers and smoother surface. If the pearl looks dull this can be because the nacre is quite thin which can also reduce durability. Matching gemstones that have so many variables is not straightforward, but it can make a big difference to a finished piece. In addition to ensuring the colour and lustre match, it is important to have pearls of the same size and shape for a smooth look around a necklace or balance within a pair of earrings. If you are trying to match existing pieces, it is important to bring them with you so that a match, especially for colour, may be found. View a selection of our pearl jewellery on our website or for a wider range visit our showroom. We are now open by appointment Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 9am-5pm. MOTORING

MANY CAR COMPANIES ARE LOOKING AT HOW THEY CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Back in black The Jaguar I-PACE has achieved global recognition and won multiple awards for its outstanding design. Now, the all-electric performance SUV’s appeal is heightened still further by the creation of the I-PACE Black special editions. These exclusive new additions to the IPACE range benefit from an enhanced specification over the SE and HSE models on which they are based and includes the Black Pack, panoramic roof and privacy glass. The clean, contemporary look is accentuated by the gloss black finish of the 20-inch five-spoke wheels, and the IPACE Black models are available in the full range of colours and include metallic paints as standard. Like every model in the range, the I-PACE Black models offers a wealth of technology designed to make every journey simpler and more enjoyable. The Pivi Pro infotainment system is ready to go by the time you’re in the driving seat and is as intuitive to use as your smartphone. For example, the EV navigation can show if nearby charging stations are available or in use, the type of connector they have, what they cost, and how long it will take to charge. A 90kWh battery delivers 400PS and 696Nm of instant torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Prices start from £65,245.

Carbon-neutral goal As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. As a start to achieving this goal, the EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ and is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbonneutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. MercedesBenz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. The first model on the market in the UK will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW. The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger.

Sport Venture A w-hole new ball game With more than 18 million units built, the Polo is one of the world’s most successful compact cars. Now,Volkswagen has unveiled its next evolutionary stage. The design, technologies and specification matrix of the bestseller have had a comprehensive update, as is immediately obvious when you see the vehicle’s new front and rear. And the range of standard equipment has been expanded significantly. On board every model you will now find: LED headlights and LED tail light clusters, the Digital Cockpit (digital instruments), an infotainment system and a multifunction steering wheel, among other things. In addition, the Polo now offers partly automated driving across its entire speed range thanks to the optional IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system. This brings together the new predictive ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and Lane Assist – which now comes as standard in every Polo – to create a new assist system to achieve this. The range will include Life, Style and R-Line models.

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 range has been enhanced with the launch of the limited edition Sport Venture, which arrives in UK dealerships this month. Based on the 1.5-litre 132ps Sport Convertible, the £27,615 Sport Venture features a stand-out design that includes free-of-charge Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint matched to a grey fabric hood and silver door mirror trims. Drop the roof and the Sport Venture’s Light Stone Nappa leather and silver roll hoop trims further complement the Deep Crystal Blue paint, as do the 16inch bright alloy wheels. With just 160 examples of the Sport Venture coming to the UK this latest special edition follows that tradition. www.sheffieldvibe.com 89
