Message From the ED & CEO

MESSAGE From

THe ED & CEO Develop an Attitude of Gratitude! I heard Oprah say these words many years ago and I found them to be very impactful – both then and now. I am incredibly grateful to have this opportunity to thank you for the support I’ve received over the past 13 years as your Executive Director & CEO. Now, with mixed emotions, I share with you the news that I will be retiring at the end of this year. When, as a small child, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, “Association Manager” was not my reply. I’m quite certain that I didn’t even know that there was such a profession. And yet, looking back over my career, I can’t see how I could possibly have been anything else. I know that many of you feel the same way about your careers in Real Estate and I hope that your decision to invest in the education to achieve a designation and maintain membership with the Institute has proven to make a real impact on your professional life. Perhaps, similar to my experience, it has turned, what once just a job, into a rewarding career. All those years ago, I would have never guessed that things would all work out so well. It makes me wish that I could go back in time and have a little chat with my younger self. For me, I would tell myself to trust my instincts – your gut always seems to know best. I would love to go back to 2004, the year I joined REIC, to tell my 46-year-old self that this would prove to be the best decision of my professional life. I would also tell myself that after lots of Strategic Planning, conference calls with the Board and committees, financial analysis, chapter support, conferences, and of course, a ton of fun, I would truly feel like I had a family with REIC members. Never has this meant more to me than, when almost two years ago, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It’s at those rough times in life that you really learn the importance of having a strong network of people around you. I can’t begin to thank all of the REIC members who supported me during this time. All of this made me stronger – feeling the love and support from so many of you.

While no one wants to go through a health crisis or any kind of significant challenge, it’s truly amazing when you realize that even with all the tough stuff we all face at times in our life, there is still so much to be grateful for - like great family, friends and colleagues. So now, it’s time for me to say good-bye to all of you and wish you the best in both your careers and your personal lives. More importantly, I want to say thank you for all that you do to make REIC strong and successful. Special thanks to the National and Chapter Boards of Directors, the Past Presidents, Chapter Administrators, all of the many volunteers, and of course, huge thanks to my staff team who are the ones who really make it all come together. How fortunate I have been to work alongside such a diligent and energetic group. I hope that you will all welcome my successor Carol Ann Burrell, CAE with open arms and show her the same high level of support you’ve given me. My time at REIC has afforded me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people from all across Canada. Your kindness and support has made my position here so remarkable. I’m so very grateful that I have had this extraordinary opportunity. One final thought by William Arthur Ward: Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy and change ordinary opportunities into blessings!

Maura McLaren, CAE Executive Director and CEO

I am honoured to serve as President for an Institute that advances the highest standards of knowledge, integrity and professionalism in real estate. REIC Members are a diverse group of highly experienced professionals and our commitment to continuing education, specialized training and shared learning distinguishes us in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving industry. Success depends on a combination of cohesive teamwork and strong leadership. REIC is fortunate to have the support of a dedicated National Board, numerous hardworking volunteer leaders from across the country, and a skilled Staff. So, it is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that we announce the retirement of our Executive Director and CEO, Maura McLaren, CAE. Maura has delivered 13 years of inspiring leadership and exceptional management that has made a profound impact on REIC and its membership. Much of what we have built is a direct result of her hard work and vision. Under Maura’s direction, REIC has forged and strengthened important relationships with stakeholders, employers, organized real estate, and professional membership bodies across Canada and the U.S. Through changing policies and practices to better support our Members’ success, REIC’s education programs and designations remain a valued mark of accomplishment and advanced knowledge. The newly formed 2017-2020 Strategic Plan: e3 - enrich, elevate, exceed encompasses much of Maura’s hard work and guidance, while also positioning REIC to continue our positive trajectory. I have very much enjoyed working with Maura during my years as a volunteer, and most recently as REIC President. I know that, like me, many volunteer leaders have benefited from the breadth of her expertise, sage advice and contagious enthusiasm for REIC. I wish Maura all the best in this exciting new chapter of her life. May her days be filled with all the things that bring her much joy. I also want to thank all of our Members, partners and volunteers for your continued support of REIC. You are truly what makes our organization the pre-eminent national association for real estate professionals.

Message From the PRESIDENT

Wishing you and your family a wonderful winter and happy holidays!

MESSAGE FROM THE RVP

MESSAGE From THe RVP Message de LA vice-PRÉSIDENT RÉGional

It’s been a busy summer and fall for me! I’ve now had a chance to connect with all the IREM Chapters across the country. Thanks so much for the hospitality I’ve been shown at each and every visit.

We have so many great chapter leaders and boards that are tackling their own unique challenges. It’s extremely encouraging to see and hear how various chapters are working to change with the times to better support their members.

This past October I attended the IREM Global Summit in Chicago where over 850 real estate management professionals from around the globe gathered for a week of learning and networking. I would urge anyone who has not yet attended one of the IREM conferences to make a point of joining us next September 26-29, 2018 at the Diplomat Beach Resort and Spa in Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale Florida! In addition to the many great learning sessions we were treated to a couple of amazing speakers: Mark Schulman is a world class drummer who spoke to us about elevating our performance, and John Foley, former US Navy Blue Angel pilot, who spoke to us about achieving consistent performance in high-stakes, constantly changing environments. As always, the annual gala and awards night was spectacular! Ben McGrew was sworn in as the 82nd IREM President. Ben is a fantastic guy, and he will be a great ambassador for IREM as he visits chapters around the globe.

Another exciting announcement from IREM - in Canada we are now known as IREM Canada rather than Region 14. Stay tuned for a new logo coming soon! I look forward to seeing everyone next year during my Chapter visits, as well as at the REIC Conference and AGM that will be held in beautiful Montreal, May 29-31, 2018! I wish you all the best during the upcoming holiday season. Ron Penner, CPM® CRP Vice President – IREM Canada

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT REIC Edmonton Chapter Luncheon with Bob Layton By Yolanta Murphy, CPM® ARM®, REIC Edmonton Chapter President & IREM Chair

On September 28, 2017, the REIC Edmonton Chapter hosted a luncheon at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre featuring a special guest - Bob Layton. Bob is a well-known voice on the Edmonton radio waves, and is in his 47th year of broadcasting. Currently, Bob is the News Manager of the Corus Edmonton group of radio stations including 630 CHED, iNews 880, Fresh Radio and CISN Country. Our members and guests were entertained by a very interesting recount of Bob’s career journey. He has also co-chaired the project to purchase and equip the Edmonton Police helicopter! His latest endeavour, however, is raising money with 100% of the proceeds going to Santa’s Anonymous from the book he wrote titled “Welcome to Radio – My Life in Broadcasting So Far”. We are very happy to share that we have tried something new for our members, exploring how we can expand access to our events via digital media. The keynote speaker presentation was streamed live to our Facebook page and the entire luncheon was recorded. We plan to have it available on our website for REIC members and guests to view on demand! 

professional Standards

Professional Standards

compliance and enforcement is a shared obligation

New Professional Standards Handbook provides greater clarity and enhanced procedures for complaints process. Since 1955, Members of the Real Estate Institute of Canada have set themselves apart as a select group of highly experienced real estate professionals devoted to higher ethical standards, advanced knowledge, and continuing education. Bound by a mutual ongoing commitment to uphold REIC’s uncompromising higher business practices, REIC Members pledge to abide by the professional imperatives of integrity, prudence, competence, cooperation and full disclosure.

It is REIC’s responsibility to maintain, promote and enforce the Code in order to ensure that the credibility of REIC, its designations, and its Members, is never compromised. These practice requirements are inherent in the REIC Code of Professional Standards (as well as the IREM Code of Professional Ethics, which is applicable to those holding CPM®, ARM® and ACoM designations) and it is incumbent on all Members – including Candidate Members – to act in strict accordance with these measures of professional conduct. In turn, it is REIC’s responsibility to maintain, promote and enforce the Code in order to ensure that the credibility of REIC, its designations, and its Members, is never compromised. Enforcement of the Code, though, relies heavily on Members. Accordingly, it is the duty of all Members to bring Code violations and cases of Unauthorized Use of Designations to the attention of the Professional Standards Committee (PSC), as well as cooperate with any investigation, if requested by the PSC.

thorough review by the PSC – and ultimately an endorsement by the committee for the proposed final version – the new Handbook was approved at the June meeting of the REIC Board of Directors. This new version of the Handbook is now available on the REIC website for download. Many thanks are extended to the PSC for their time, expertise and thoughtful review of this comprehensive document. During the past year, the PSC reviewed seven complaints of professional misconduct by Members. Of these complaints, three were dismissed and four resulted in charges against a Member. From among the four Members who were charged, two terminated their REIC membership and one was terminated due to non-payment of dues. Additionally, five cases of Unauthorized Use of Designations were brought to the attention of the PSC in 2017, all of which were followed up by staff and received letters directing them to cease and desist the use of our designations. 

It is also important to understand that, while the Board of Directors is the ultimate authority within REIC, the administration of all professional conduct complaints has been delegated by the Board to the PSC. In practical terms, this means that the PSC is empowered to review, investigate and discipline any Member. In doing so, the committee is directed by the procedures elaborated in the REIC Professional Standards Handbook. Additionally, both those who are the subject of a complaint or are considering submitting a complaint will also find guidance in the Handbook. Earlier this year, REIC undertook a robust review and revision process of the Handbook. Over an intensive five-month period, REIC senior staff rewrote the procedures, clarified and enhanced the complaints process, added needed guidelines for case Researchers, and updated the PSC Terms of Reference.
