THE CURSE OF
THE FOURTH DATE Coco St. George
I
n hindsight, showing up in a wedding gown to our fourth date might have been a mistake, as Tracey warned me. A big mistake. Yes, it was a faux pas, but totally justified. Who could blame me? After all, it was our fourth date. And if you know what happens on the third date, then you will understand what my train of thought was.
Besides, he was the one who told me to meet in front of the church. Did I say church? No, it was a Cathedral with a capital C. The Cathedral of Amalfi, Italy, no less. If you have been to the Piazza del Domo in Amalfi, you should know why I say so: a massive medieval building, built in the 9th and 10th centuries, and rebuilt and remodeled several times throughout its history, to include now Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Byzantine elements. An architectonical jewel if you know what that means. And if you haven’t been there, you should visit the virtual reconstruction in SL and see for yourself. But before I go further, let me tell you where I met him. I met him at a club; one of my favorite places in SL. That night they were having one of those “Best in” contests; I think the theme was red, so “best in red”. Who doesn’t have something red in their inventory? Red hair, red dress, red shoes, and you’re set and poised to win a juicy prize in Lindens. You vote for your friends, your friends vote for you, and everybody splits the loot. “I voted for you, you know?” he IM’d me after the winners were revealed, with my name at the top of the list thanks to the alphabetical order. I must admit, as pick-up lines go, that wasn’t the worst I’ve heard. And he was easy on the eye, if not outright cute. He didn’t have the widespread macho-looking avatar, you know? The one with the overly broad shoulders, arms that barely touch the THE FOURTH DATE
waistline, hips so meager that makes you wonder how they can support the huge torso, and a rather small head with an angry look. A look you would expect to find more in the club bouncer than in the guy asking you out. Anyway, a quick scan to his profile, where he avoided the usual tropes you see everywhere (the eternity feelings for his friends and a death threat to those who dare to cross them), convinced me, and I decided to give him a chance. Next thing I knew, I accepted his friendship request, and we were dancing together. That amounted to our first date, I supposed, since the couple dances at that place didn’t leave much to the imagination. For our second date, he invited me to the most romantic place I had seen. We took a boat ride where we could cuddle, chat, and get to know each other. If you ask me, we could chat all the same standing on the sidewalk of a dilapidated neighborhood. But, hey, we are visual beings, and our surroundings play a big part on how we understand the world around us. Besides, who was the guy who said that Second Life was nothing more than a glorified, graphic-environment, 3D chat? If that’s true, then we should pay close attention to what we see. And what I was seeing was great. This guy was really interested in what I had to say, made me feel safe and comfortable, and even before we left the boat, I knew something was going to happen between us...

And then came the third date. I am sure I don’t need to make a detailed account of that third time we met. Let’s just say we had fun ensconced in his home, safe from prying eyes. At least that was what his security system made us believe. Little did we know that the camming abilities of his ex could bypass the tightest security barriers and, mainly because she was still in the allowed list, she had no problem TPing right in the middle of the bed. Luckily for us, by the time she appeared, we had finished our business, if you know what I mean (and if you don’t, you shouldn’t be reading this). I considered it wiser to leave them alone to solve their unfinished business, and control-q’d myself. I left with the certainty that better days were yet to come. A few days after that, he IM’d me just as I logged in. I thought that was a good sign. He tried to explain the mishap with his ex, but I wasn’t really interested in hearing reasons or causes. So, he has an ex. Who doesn’t? I would be more concerned if he hadn’t had at least one relation before me. “So, we’re good?”, he asked. “Sure. What do you want to do?” He told me he was on his way out, but that he would be back in a couple of hours. “Do you know Saint Andrew’s Cathedral? It’s beautiful! We can meet there later, OK?” Of course, it was OK for me. As soon as he went offline, I headed to Marketplace, searching for wedding dresses. “Don’t you think you’re jumping the gun?”, asked Tracey when I told her the news. “Why? Isn’t it obvious? We had a good time, and now he wants to formalize it. Why else would he tell me to meet at the church?”

THE FOURTH DATE
Well, long story short, he chose that place because in front of the church there is a quaint little coffee shop, which he liked a lot and where he wanted to hang out with me. And he thought that, because of its size, the church would be a better landmark. Yes, we hang out at the quaint little coffee shop, after I made a quick outfit change. But the mood was somehow spoiled and after a mere five minutes he remembered some work he had to do in RL. He blew a perfunctory kiss before he left. I didn’t hear from him again, and days later I found he had disappeared from my contacts list. Really? No explanation, no official goodbye, no “It’s not you, it’s me” kind of thing? Well, I say “good riddance”! If a guy can’t take a hint (or takes it that badly), I don’t want to have anything to do with him.

inding joy in Second Life (SL) depends for a big part on having a purpose there. Certainly many purposes are available, given one takes the time to look through the options. Those options might be in education, art, technology, creativity, social activities, friendship, romance, exploration, companionship— even a job. Many residents come to SL looking for romance alone. Some are lucky enough to find what they came for; many don’t. Perhaps finding someone with similar interests and having something to do together will increase the chances for a fulfilling love life in this virtual world. But this piece is not about finding a fulfilling love live whatsoever. This is more about finding a possible purpose, something to explore— alone or, perhaps, together. Just what is this possible purpose? Scuba diving. That’s right. Scuba has been available on SL for quite a while. Some diving sims are more serious than others. One of the best places to get into scuba diving would be The Dive Shop. The Dive Shop is supported by PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Much of the technical background taught at The Dive Shop is surprisingly accurate and gives a glimpse into the technical aspect of scuba diving in RL as well. The Dive Shop claims to have the most realistic underwater environment, though I’d be curious to see other sims challenge that stat. They also give a home to RL PADI diver training, including an introduction to NITROX. In recreational diving terms, enriched air nitrox (EAN) refers to any nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture with an oxygen concentration higher than the 21 percent found in normal air— 32 percent oxygen being the most common. It is this higher percentage of oxygen, and the proportionately lower percentage of nitrogen, that allows divers to lengthen nodecompression limits, shorten surface intervals, and get an added safety buffer for decompression sickness in certain diving circumstances. But of course, this is not all! Interested in learning how to read (and understand) a dive computer? THE DIVE SHOP
Besides the technical aspect of scuba diving (as far as it can the recreated in SL, anyway), the Dive Shop offers access to five truly amazing, geographically-themed dive sites. Divers can observe fish and other sea creatures and dive all the way down to depths of 50 meters. Some dives can be simple, swimming through shallow waters where small, colorful fish attract the eye. In these shallow waters, almost alien-like nudibranchs or colorful slugs might be hard to spot, but their graceful moves and stunning beauty is always a welcomed reward on any dive. The deeper the dive takes us, the more likely the fish will get bigger. One might find a grouper, a swordfish, a stingray or manta, perhaps even a shark. Other dives are more technical, taking the adventurer to a sunken boat that might hide a forgotten treasure or hold an old secret that went down with the sinking ship. Entering boats underwater is not without risk. For instance, an inexperienced diver might stir up sediments, and soon they might not be able to see anything anymore. It is not unheard of for divers to miss going deeper inside the wreck and lose track of proper decompression. With proper training, however, wreck dives are truly exciting and fun. Eventually, when returning to the surface, some decompression stops might be necessary, depending on the depth and time. So, why not get the training to explore this photogenic wonderland freely? Taking underwater photos in SL is fantastic, too. This scuba journey might take an SL resident even further. Sure, it is great to spend time with a friend or loved one like this. A shared adventure is certainly meaningful and can be fun for many hours. But this adventure could go beyond even that. PADI offers their theory education fully online. Imagine, you and your partner could take this to Real Life (RL). Pass the theory portion of a PADI Open Water online training, then meet at a tropical

destination for a “training/certification vacation” to complete the practical portion together? Granted, not everyone might be interested in becoming a scuba diver in RL. However, it could be something to explore in SL— alone, with a loved one, or with friend(s). After all, virtual scuba diving for a second date might not be such a terrible idea at all. ugust is here, which signals the final few weeks of summer both in Second Life and for half of the Real World. That means we need to make the most of the last vestiges of sunshine, swimming, and sunscreen before the days grow shorter and we are cast back into autumn.
The rest of the deck items are from a variety of designers around Second Life— some are old and some are new. Never fear using a mix of your inventory items to create the look and vibe that you want. If it works, it doesn’t matter when you bought it, although I would stick to mesh items if I were you.
Naturally, that meant that I had to do a pool related scene for you with all the things I enjoy about summer: swimming pools, cold drinks, snacks, and dining outside. Let’s soak it all in and appreciate the warmth of August.
Being a safety-conscious pool owner, I also decided to fence the whole pool area off; this meant I could add some gorgeous fruit trees from Little Branch to the scene. What could be better than a swim and some fresh fruit off the trees lining the pool? They can be eaten or used in drinks!
The pool was a natural choice for this article, as it had a great decking area and a lovely gazebo for dining. The cool thing about this pool is that if you touch the wooden decking, it slides over the pool to create more space for dancing or partying when the water gets too cold for evening swimming. The pool is from Your Dreams and is aptly named the Hidden Pool. The lovely dining table, chairs and place settings are also part of the pool set so that makes it easy to decorate with items that fit the space perfectly. How easy is that? It also means that you can enjoy the ice cream quicker! The awesome floating pool car and movie screen are a great way to watch some YouTube and relax at the same time. Yes, the TV works! You can rez as many cars as you want, and they come with animations, too, if the movies get a bit dull. These items are from CHEZ MOI.
POOLSIDE
There are many amazing pools around SecondLife, so I hope this inspires you to go and check them out for yourself. Every summer backyard deserves a gorgeous place to swim and relax. Enjoy August!

mandaT Tamatzui was no stranger to Second Life, returning last March after a few years’ absence. The New Zealand artist has an impressive Real World resume: Exhibits in four continents and sales in Europe, the USA, New Zealand, and Asia. Today, she is back, and so are her paintings in the AmandaT Tamatzui Gallery. You should be here, too. “I bought this building when I found a place in Second Life,” AmandaT explains, giving an impromptu tour among walls adorned with her work as colorful as she is. In the early days, her exhibitions were held in smaller venues, such as the small gallery provided by her home landlord. She notes, “My first SL art exhibition was in 2009, but this is the place I can truly call my own.” For many SL art patrons, her gallery is their home as well. On first encounters, patrons become friends. They are drawn to over 50 paintings adorning artistic walls. View the beauty, enjoy the color, and study the work. Part of AmandaT’s story is in each piece. On these cyber canvases, art celebrates life through abstracts, which the creator claims to be the best form to express thoughts and ideas. She notes that abstract is not necessarily with people or figures. It is a play on colors and feelings to express something. “My works are colorful,” adds the artist who has sold over 120 pieces in real life and an estimated 80 in the second one. “There is an air of abstract, fantasy, and whimsy. I have been a dreamer since

I was a kid,” she explains. In art, her dreams are illustrated in pigments. “This is my style. These are my stories.” My London Trip on Canvas is one such painting and tale. It is AmandaT’s 2012 visit to England as told through paint and pigments. “It was interesting, but I’m glad to be back in New Zealand,” she laughs, reminiscing London adventures. Her other works are similarly created. Pieces of the painting illustrate the whole. A favorite, Dance Sistas depicts five women of various ages and races dancing together to their hearts’ content. You don’t have to be a sister to feel good when viewing this work. Anyone who has good friends makes the connection, and smiles. Another example is Red Timer, depicting an hourglass with written messages, “Time does not wait for us,” and “You are special!” The takeaway is, “Don’t wait to tell somebody that.” Duly noted. Every painting in here evokes similar reactionssmiles, happiness, inspiration. Her canvases make you think, make you happy, or make you want to know more. Some topics are obvious. Others, open for interpretation. Like real world galleries, directional signs point the way to various chambers. Depending on the path you take, abstract art, abstractive figurative works, and more are displayed. Of course, this is Second Life, so unlike real world galleries, there is a dance intan in the lobby and on this visit, a cyber kitten is in the hall.

AmandaT’s friendly house of paintings is a welcoming place for the art connoisseur, the casual browser, and the rest of us. We are all equal here and enjoy it. “Shortly after we met, AmandaT showed me her gallery,” recalls USA visitor Safire. “I looked through the halls and saw the brilliant color and whimsical movement,” she added. “I instantly felt joy.” Another artistic frequent flyer, Reign from New Zealand, agrees. “Since AmandaT opened her gallery, I’ve been privileged to visit and relax. She is one of my closest friends. She has charisma and a genuine heart, and I see her heart reflected in her pieces.”
Be it at home, her gallery, or shows in both worlds, AmandaT’s presence through art is felt in many places. Through our online venue, she offers color for the heart and soul. Bringing such joy and imagination requires more than a skill. It is an art, from the brushes of AmandaT Tamatzui and the palette of Second Life. Visit the AmandaT Tamatzui Gallery in Second Life: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/ Icanhaz/100/239/1994
In addition to the gallery, AmandaT still takes her show on the road— cyber and real asphalt. At this writing, in SL her work is on exhibit at Rainbow Painters with a showing at the Splash Surf sim’s Art walk on August 14, 2 PM SLT. She is also booked for an event at Janus Art Gallery. An official grand opening for her gallery is being planned, possibly in August. She is currently working on a project “Turning ‘Meh’ into ‘Wow’.” AmandaT explains, “I encourage people to revamp something boring into something gorgeous – recycled items, old furniture, old clothing, anything left unfinished. Because of the coronavirus, some people are stuck at home, so I figured, if I can create an event where they can turn something boring into something ‘wow,’ I can help.” Part of the wow factor, to help those trapped indoors for whatever reason, is puzzling— literally. AmandaT sells many of her artworks as jigsaw puzzles through Amazon. “I want people to have something fun to do, whatever levels they face with the coronavirus,” she adds.

ights, Camera, Action. Does this sound familiar? Shooting any type of film requires these three basic items. Adult film has been around for quite a while and has its footprint in almost every R to X rated movies you have ever seen. Let’s face it: sex sells. We must understand that Adult Film, a certain aspect of ’Pornography’, is a business. Its footprint has gone from Real Life to Second Life back to Real Life. Meet Jason Steel, better known as djg108edition (Legacy Name) in Second Life. Mr. Steel started on IMVU, another virtual platform, where he perfected his craft in adult film and photography. He had a passion and wanted to figure out how to monetize it. Jason and his team came to Second Life with his brand East Bound Studios, made it their home, and began setting up their presence. Jason has an amazing creative eye that other Second Life Adult Film businesses have not picked up on, which is leading him to become a Second Life household name. Jason has created his films based off many real-life films made by West Coast Productions; he uses the same style concept as well, which has made him one of the best adult film makers in Second Life. Jason created a character by the name of “Black Supamane” which has been in 95% of his films. He loves to add other characters and make a story which many can relate too. Some film productions consist of themes involving Interracial, BBW, Ebony, Fetishes, and MILF relations, which make for interesting storylines. Adult film creates a fantasy that lets your mind take the place of any character and can enhance your own sex life with your partner, giving you ideas to embark on and letting you be free to just have fun.
