fter months of preparation, thrill, and anticipation, the big December night is here. No, not Christmas, but perhaps a close second – The Miss Virtual World 2022 pageant is finally here. And what a night it is! The show runs seamlessly from an audience perspective, which is good. A smooth, enjoyable show is the goal. But there are two stories here: one in front of the curtain, the other behind it. Backstage at the opulent BOSL Innovation Pavilion Sound Garden Venue is another tale. A team of skilled professionals monitors every aspect of MVW. Their hard work makes the show look easy. It isn’t. Teamwork is critical. Take Jamee Sandalwood, for example. In addition to being tonight’s emcee, Jamee is the show’s director and manager. She brings experience to her role as the former MVW Sweden, 2015. The closer the event, the more hats she wears. “You must have an eye on everything,” she says while giving a tour of the stage. “I move contestants around the stage with cues at the appropriate times and coordinate movements to make sure judges see the ladies and score them.” She summarizes her job: “I make sure it all happens when it’s supposed to.” But she does not work in a vacuum. A virtual army is behind the scenes, handling tasks from taking applications to running the pageant finale. Like Jamee, DiamondGem Destiny is a Chief Operating Officer. “Basically, we organize everything,” she says. “Meetings, working with judges, coordinating contestants for the various activities— all of this starts months before the finale.” M V W C A N D I DAT E 2 0 2 2 PAG E A N T

Also like Jamee, DiamondGem is a former applicant – MVW Thailand, 2012. “Being a former contestant, I know what these contenders are going through. It can be quite stressful at times with deadlines, etc.” To ease some of the stress and backstage jitters, DiamondGem and others offer encouragement and understanding. So, on with the show. As the invitation-only audience takes their seats, candidates gather behind the curtain. “We talk with them backstage before we go live,” says DiamondGem. “We give a pep talk and answer any final questions they may have.” During and before the event, pageant officials are in constant contact through a private communications channel. Everyone must know what everyone else is doing. As in the real world, a live show offers challenges. Something can always go wrong or be unexpected. Unlike the real world, a major virtual concern is the dreaded lag. “Lag is a technical issue that cannot be helped,” notes DiamondGem. “We all dread it.” Jamee agrees and adds, “Should anything not go as planned, it’s my job to change things on the fly and make it look smooth and seamless. However, lag for the contestants is always a concern.” She continues, “The key is making sure everyone is in the right place at the right time. Not just the contestants, but judges, staff, the audience, and us.” The goal is two-fold: crown a new winner and make sure the audience has a good experience. The good experience begins about an hour before the show, when guests, judges, and others gather for a champagne social at the Sound Garden Venue. PHOTOS : CARA PAINE

Members from all facets of MVW take a quick breather before the show begins. “It’s nice to be part of the audience today,” Jennifer Steele states with a smile. She spent almost a week decorating the venues, including the runway events and the main venue. She also decorated the bar we are socializing in. Cheers. During the show, Emcee Jamee acknowledges the judges. “Thank you for your time and attention to the details our prospective candidates are presenting to you today.,” she says. “We appreciate your hard work making the tough decisions.” Indeed, judges have a difficult task ahead. They assemble in the South Garden Venue before moving to the amphitheater. Their tough job, selecting the winner from a field of winners, awaits. Sitting at a table at the pre-event social, Joys Cuttita is a third-year judge. “The girls who enter the competition have a particular talent,” Judge Joys notes, as a bartender pours the bubbly. “Each of the girls is special, unique. For us judges, it is sometimes very difficult to select just one.”

Judge Monica Querrien agrees with her colleague. “It can be difficult, yes,” she explains about rendering the final decision. “But I do my best to look at each candidate fairly and make the best decisions based on how they present themselves.” At 11:45 am, we are asked to make our way to the amphitheater and take our seats. At noon SLT, the curtain pulls back as Jamee takes the stage. Her excitement and enthusiasm are real as she proclaims, “Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the MISS VIRTUAL WORLD 2022 GRAND FINALE!!” And the show goes on as contestants are introduced before a panel of judges, the live audience, and later viewers around the world via recorded social media. Congratulations to Miss Virtual World 2022, Ann Lykin. Congratulations to the First and Second runners-up: Angelinkanega and MzzSapphire. And congratulations to the officers, staff, and volunteers who make this monumental SL event work, year after year. You all deserve crowns, too.

MOUNTAIN TOP CAFE Arya Braveheart

W

elcome to 2022! My hope for all of you is that this year is better than the last two. My goal for this article is to bring you a beautiful cafe scene. Consider this a place of escape. It is literally on the top of a mountain on our land. It is a retreat. It is above all of this. So, put on your skis and boots, pull on your gloves, and grab a ride on one of the ski lifts. When you jump off at the top, you will find the cafe on your right. Leave your skis and poles by the door, hang your jacket and scarf on the stand just inside the door and take a seat by the fire. Let the warmth take away the chill.

I had fun creating this scene. I think what I enjoyed the most was using a real mix of old and new items from my inventory. Just because it is a couple of years old, does not mean it can’t work in your home or business with all the new items you have collected. Happy January everyone. Let’s make this year a good one. Stay strong, stay safe, and enjoy escaping into SL for some good old fashioned home decorating when you need it. While you are at it, support some amazing designers by going and buying some of their amazing products. Let’s make 2022 a happy year for everyone.

I will whip you up a hot drink and something to eat. What would you like? We can make you an espresso, latte, tea, cider, or Irish Coffee if you feel like something a bit more invigorating. We also have cinnamon rolls, donuts and the best cakes. Grab a magazine or some free wifi and just relax. I would love to hang out here with you and we could chat and just forget the world for a while. There are comfy chairs to read in or tables to eat at. Food, drink, and books. The perfect place to watch the snow and the locals.

e made it! We all survived one more year. Here we are, at the starting point of a new year; a brand-new year full of promises, of hopes, of plans… We look back at the past year –especially the two last months– and shiver. The moment we took off our Halloween costumes, we were already busy preparing for Thanksgiving: planning dinner, inviting family, dealing with reluctant siblings, trying to defuse crises between aunts and uncles, convincing Grampa to join the rest of the family— even if he swore he would never board a plane after Buddy Holly died in that plane crash “the day the music died”. And what about the holidays? Be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, the removal of Uncle Leo’s kidney stone, or whatever other reason to celebrate we had, it felt like herding a clowder of stray cats. And please, don’t get me started on New Year’s Eve! We’d better hide the memories of that disastrous night under a merciful veil of oblivion, lest we open a can of worms that should be kept tightly closed forever. After all this brouhaha and hubbub, all the hustle and bustle of the happiest season of the year, you feel exhausted and depleted and you need to recharge your batteries. Yes, we all need some quiet time, some me-time, where we can relax and take good care of ourselves, after looking out for everybody else these past weeks. Or, even better: a we-time! Yes! Call your partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, significant other, best pal, or whoever makes you smile and treat yourselves with a wonderful weekend, where you can recharge your batteries and be ready for the year ahead. If you’re in the mood to be pampered and welltaken of, you should point your teleporters to The Ritz SL; it may not be an exact replica of the one you find in Paris, but the staff are certainly able

RECHARGING BAT TERIES

to offer you an equally unforgettable experience. Immediately upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by a friendly receptionist who will try to answer any questions you may have. But don’t worry, the checkin process is pretty straightforward: you click, you pay, you’re in. You’ll be invited to a group that will allow you to wander throughout the building and will give you access to your room. ‘Room’? I should say ‘suite’. Yes, an ample and rather luxurious suite awaits you and your partner, and you’ll find everything you need to fulfill your every whim. Don’t forget to open the box with welcome gifts. You’ll love ambling throughout the suite, donning the robe and the slippers courtesy of the hotel to their guests. Going outside your room in the robe, though, is not exactly a good idea. You may want your outfit to match your sumptuous surroundings; otherwise, you risk spoiling the experience. You may want to go to the indoor pool (there is an outdoor pool, too, but given the winter weather, keeping a roof above your heads is advisable) and enjoy the water, have a drink at the bar, or simply sit down and enjoy the calm and quiet atmosphere. This is exactly what you need after the pandemonium you went through the last few weeks, right? Nothing to worry about, nothing to care about. Maybe your only concern is deciding what to eat later. A restaurant at The Ritz offers an excellent breakfast and lunch. But for dinner, you may want something more adventurous and sophisticated. If that’s the case, you should aim your teleporter to the Pizzeria Johnny Basilico, a lovely eatery located in the charming Coeur di Amalfi, a classic Italian town on the Mediterranean sea. Don’t let the name “pìzzeria” fool you into thinking pizza is all you can eat here (although I wouldn’t mind if that were the case). No, the menu Chef Jonny prepares is varied and includes

PHOTOS : COCO ST. GEORGE

delicacies such as funghi champignon ripieni gratinati al forno (stuffed champignon mushrooms au gratin), lasagne con ricotta e ragù di verdure (lasagna with ricotta and vegetable ragout), and of course, gelato and Tiramisu for dessert. And you can also count on wine and liquor to wash down your food. This place is so popular that you will need to make a reservation in advance. Contact GreatDaze, owner of Basilico, for more information regarding dates, bookings, and prices. The dinner is served only once a month because there is a limited supply of the food; the plates being served on your table are not a simple texture slapped on a prim, but food carefully crafted through a lengthy process called G&S and actually disappears after you eat it. All those fine wines can age only with time, right? I could dive into a deeply technical explanation of how G&S works, but I’ll spare you the trouble and will just say that it provides you with a fantastic and very realistic experience at the table. A full belly makes for a happy heart, as my Grampa used to say. And no wrong exists that a good vacation won’t make right. So, go back to The Ritz and lounge for a while at the Hitchcock Club, having a drink or two listening to great music, or hit the dance floor in the Ritz Club before going upstairs and trying the adult section of the bed’s menu. Don’t be shy! Remember, you came here to recharge your batteries, and after this, you will go to the usual grind of your daily life. You’re going to need every spark of energy you can collect here. You can be sure that you and your partner are in for a great time!

A MAGNIFICENT MIND ...ROSABELLA Sita Writer

S

ometimes, you enter a world created by a 3D builder and are astounded, no matter how many years you have been in SL. King Kong Jungle is one of those places where a creative mind has taken hold and gone wild. Rosabella’s creativity was recognized, as she won a SLEA Endowment Award for his exhibit called Immersion 2. “I was so appreciative of winning that award. Over the moon, in fact, and so excited to do something for me that I was so passionate about. What it meant to me is that I had a challenge in front of me to prove that I was capable of bringing something different to the art world in SL, something that hadn’t been done before. I needed to be able to blend in everything I had placed into my application without fail…and I am happy to see the judges agreed that I did.” When asked what inspires her, Rosabella replies, “My wild imagination, mostly, and my love of creating something others will enjoy and interact in so that they can be themselves and have happiness while being in a place they truly feel they belong.” The Uhre King King Jungle turned six years old in 2021 and now has the highlight of Atlantis City, a spectacular underwater world. In addition to these two areas, Rosabella has four full sim-sized cities including The Big Apple New York City, Beverly Hills, Tropical City, and A Touch of France, which is an art hub brimming with fine art galleries and museums. When asked how Rosabella feels about her Sims, “We have wonderful communities of wonderful, kind, loving, and very caring and supportive people. We run events all week, but we don’t over do them, so we all get our peaceful times to relax at home, too.”

When thinking about a new build, we asked Rosabella what inspires her to build, [he/she] replied “When I am thinking about a new build, my mind jumps from one thing to another to sort out what the idea is and how to make that a reality in this virtual world. So if there was a window you could open to see inside my mind, you would see this— ‘Ok, what is it I want to achieve here? What do I know about it? How big do I want it? How long have I got to build that and when? Buildings? People? Landscaping? Ok, interaction? Fun things? All right, all that is figured out now… let’s build!’ I choose to do my builds now over three to four weeks, as my schedule is booked up with DJ and host work so I don’t get much time to really build like I used to.” Rosabella builds a variety of things. Most recently, she is building a platform for a major designer every three months so SL’s models can walk the catwalk in fashion shows. In regard to building, Rosabella advises, “Take a dive into the unknown waters and feel your way through what ever it is you want to achieve without fear of judgment or failure, because it will always be your masterpiece that no one person could replicate exactly the same.” Looking back at all her accomplishments, Rosabella wants to continue to give opportunities to others in art without any expense or commission from them. “I have been doing this for years. I know there are many people who have dreamed in real life of doing something and never had the chance or opportunity to do it. I love it when I meet someone in a situation like that. All I say is, ‘ok, lets see if we can make that a reality for you shall we?’ Hearing the smile and feeling their gratitude is really lovely. I also want to

continue to bring builds on a larger scale; for instance, instead of having all my cities on one sim like I do now, I want to have them on one full sim each, sideby-side with water in between to sail from New York to the jungle.” These sound like amazing works in progress, ones that will give back so much creativity to SL peeps!
