andlewood: a build inspired by the tranquility of the romantic wilderness of the Northwest Pacific coast. It certainly pleases the visitor’s mind and soul. Relax, and let the world simply pass by; explore; or have fun riding the surfable waves. The place has many wonderful photo opportunities to discover as well as hidden retreats to share some time with a loved one to talk about the events of a busy day. Now, candlewoods are any of a genus (Fouquieria) such as the ocotillo, which is a spiny desert shrub or tree with slender stems and brightly colored flowers yielding a resinous wood. This plant is able to survive the hot and dry climate of the western deserts. Candlewood is not only used for fence posts, torches, and as a substitute for candles, but also in art or creating musical instruments. Furthermore, the ocotillo is used for medical purposes. Various locations in Real Life (RL) are named after candlewood. A beautiful lakescape in Connecticut is named Candlewood, the artificial lake created back in 1926. It became a popular tourist destination, and many New York residents choose it as a secondary home. We don’t know what actually inspired the builder of Second Life’s (SL) Candlewood when creating this sim. Perhaps the hardiness of the desert plant and the picturesque location in Connecticut were simply merged in fantasy and placed in the Coastal Pacific Northwest? The resilient, rough landscape of Candlewood with its capturing beauty would support that theory. The landing point is inside a forest, and lovely pathways invite for strolls as well as exploration. As the place is incredibly popular, it might be a bit busy on arrival. Therefore, it’s best to quickly leave the landing point so others may arrive. In the forest, visitors can find free-flowing waterfalls, which give the place an idyllic yet wild atmosphere. The wild atmosphere is further highlighted by the wildlife,

too-- of which there is plenty! Like that bear fishing in the river, catching a salmon. The builder recommends bird watching. Looking up in Candlewood is always a good idea: birds are not the only creatures capable of flying here. So, heads up travelers, and watch out! Joking aside, the place is, of course, not dangerous. Many lovely hideouts and photogenic spots can easily make a good impression on anyone’s Flickr page. A wide variety of animals are frolicking, enjoying the lovely naturescape-- not only deer and rabbits, but also mountain lions and wolves. Can you find them all? A path leads down to the shore. After you’ve finished exploring and hiking, a table with delicious wine and bread-- even cookies --awaits. Houses are placed out on the water, anda lighthouse stands strong against the waves hammering onto the shoreline. Speaking of the waves, they are surfable-- one can rent a board at the shoreline. The build itself shows great skill and attention to detail. The objects and their texture are carefully chosen. Photographers can configure lights tomake their photos look like beautiful oil paintings that might bring such an amazing place into a living room. Candlewood can certainly be your next virtual hideaway, a place to relax from RL’s rat race. All you have to bring is a little bit of time. In these intense times, we all need some relaxation, some winding down. Relax, and let your mind fly around the mesmerizing landscape-- or cam, for those that prefer it more literal. Not to say that walking around is not that important, quite the opposite. I believe both have their value, and one does not make the other obsolete. But simply sit and rest a while on a bench or on a pillow and enjoy the quietness of the place, maybe with a little bit of soft music for immersers.
Why not spend some well-deserved ‘Me’ time-- or simply be nice to oneself --at Candlewood.

ith 27 sims covering all aspects of air travel, marina lifestyles, outer space, and more, Angels Airports and Marinas is more than a portal. It is a destination. For many, this massive expanse is their Second Life-they go nowhere else. The pilot community consists of seasoned pros who command the skies, while newbie flyers seek the clouds and occasionally learn about gravity the hard way. Marinas are stocked with ocean-going vessels, yachts, outboard motor boats, and sailors with skills ranging from Sinbad to Gilligan. All are welcomed here, including you. The best place to start is the Teleporter Hub, but you don’t have to. “We never force anybody to a teleport spot,” notes the site’s co-owner, PriMcess Dolly. “That gets annoying.” Most visitors opt to fly, float, or hop freely from Angels’ many sims. But the Hub provides teleports to any Angels location, which is quite a task. Standing before you is a gateway-- about two dozen portal “pictures” covering a wide selection of airports and marinas. Just walk into one of the images and become a part of it. Waiting on the other side is your landing point of choice.
D E TA I L E D A N D F E AT U R E LOADED ACTIVITIES. Set sail for adventure beyond. Fly among the clouds in crystal blue skies or into the blackness of space. Likeminded friends await at each turn. “We have many reallife pilots visiting,” notes Angels’ Co-founder, Quianna. “They are quite happy. But we listen very carefully to their suggestions and comments. We are committed to continuous improvement.”

Dolly adds, “We constantly update and refine all sims. We watch how our places are used and make changes if needed based on our communities’ suggestions.” What community members and visitors will tell you is that Angels Airports and Marinas offer the most detailed and feature-loaded activities in SL. Planes really fly. Baggage moves on conveyor belts, runways are clear for takeoff, and unlike real life airports, Angels’ vending machines really work! I got a virtual can of Mountain Dew and a bag of Skittles to prove it. Visitors rezz personal aircraft. For the inexperienced, or those wanting refresher training, flying lessons are taught on site. Hangers are available for rental as well as berths and docks for boats in the marinas. Team Dolly and Quianna’s undertaking is a continuous labor of love and years in the making. “We
RU N WAY S A R E C L E A R F O R TA K E O F F. progressively built and acquired sims over the past three years,” Quianna notes. “People can park their planes on all Angels airports and fly or land and use our gates and terminals.” All phases of airport life are available. Many are interactive. Fueling stations, cargo handling areas, runways, and teller booths are here, as well. If this airport was any more real, it would lose your luggage. But I know what you’re saying: “anybody can visit an airport. What’s so special about these?” For starters, this is Second Life. Unlike real life counterparts, Angels Airports include a site that is out of this world-- literally. You can book a flight to Mars.

Welcome to Angels N1- Space Station and Red Planet. Pro tip: Pan out as you approach Mars for final docking to behold the most realistic space sim in Second Life. The Mars base is compartmentalized capsules connected by sealed doors. The complex includes teleporters - the kind Captain Kirk uses, not SL (though it has those, too). A laboratory is here, though I’m not sure what scientists are studying-- or if I want to know. And a nice nearby café offers the tastiest salads available beyond Earth’s atmosphere. In addition to Mars Base, one can explore the SS Karu Space Station. And who among us has not longed for a leisure day on a luxury yacht after a day of space travel? Angels fills that need with marinas from practical to exquisite. Docks are available for watercraft, and apartments are ready to rent. Gathering places for friends to socialize and swap tales of days at sea, air, or space are popular, too. Finally, check out the Aldarion - Fantasy - Adult Fullers Hart. A village which largely exists in dreams both cyber and real. From land, sea, and air, Angels wings its way into our virtual lives as we fly the friendly skies of Second Life. Buckle up. The sky’s the limit.

new night brought a desire for a refuge of possibilities and creativity— do we not all search for these at some point or another (or always)? I was ready for an experience… a good one. Word had reached me of a dance show, and I finally got in to see what it was about. After all, who could resist a show called Le Cirque de la Nuit performed at Idle Rogue? I was overwhelmed, let me tell you! I have been in SL for a while now, I stopped tracking the exact number of days and years, and usually nothing surprises me. Yet this performance did— riveting, creative, fun, and dramatic, the performance was everything I had hoped it would be and more! It takes over your camera and your mind and senses— ooh, la la! Dance finds beauty in all motion, whether the measured strength of a stage prancing dancer or the hover of pollinating bees. How much do we love those animated pixel trees that undulate gracefully against the SL breezes? Have you seen some of the EEP clouds, hand painted and so artful that they take our breath away? I have a theory—which I might have generated just today, lol —that we are seduced by motion because it is the hieroglyph that says, “here is life.” Wherever motion is happening, forces are at work, elements are combining to bring about a result, and the beautiful dancing pageant of life continues. Weirdly, in a world where people loathe change, beautiful motion, which is always the precursor of change, compels and mesmerizes us. Well, I do go on a bit. The story begins with Cherryblonde— an idyllic name, at that after raising her daughter to school age, Cherry heard through the grapevine about SL and took the plunge in 2008 Needless to say, she was hooked: “As I tell anyone who will listen, I fell in love before four days had gone past— who hasn’t?
PHOTOS: JAMEE SANDALWOOD
Who can resist the undivided attention of a likeminded companion to explore infinite combinations of pixels in company? He was a noob like me, and a gifted content creator who wanted to self-support in game; that philosophy sustained every decision I made thereafter, until here we are.” Cherryblonde has been running entertainment events for the entirety of her SL. “I started with a 12-hour live music festival to open my parcel, Idle Rogue, which has supported creators, artists, musicians, dancers, and those who appreciate them. It is the home of Guerilla Burlesque, which is ten years old this year. I am in the fortunate position of being able to identify and support leaders within my talent pool, each that bring their own vision to the work we do together. It wasn’t always this way, I needed quite a bit of humbling, lol, but I am so glad it is what we do now— it makes everything so much better.” At Idle Rogue, the dance entertainments include a Main Stage Review once a month directed by Lynxa Inglewood. “I view her as running our ‘storyteller’ stage, a place for epic acts, big stage sets, special effects, the feeling of extravagance.” Meegan Danitz directs BURLY, a burlesque cabaret performed in a dinner theater setting. “We designed and progress this show to be thoroughly interactive and personality-driven. We want to make ‘stars’ with ‘repertoires’ remembered all over the grid, but most importantly, we want a show that audiences connect with. We want them to come to our shows knowing that they will feel like they have been out on a night on the town, and all is in good fun. We want to make it as real for them as it is for us.” The company has also resumed performances at The Guerilla Pit, which is based on the age-old tradition of performance in the round, given fresh direction in both
Bosl edition 46
stagecraft and performance. And, it doesn’t stop there, as Cherry tells us: “We have also performed at some of the great festivals in SL, including Burn2 and the now-defunct Indie Teepee. We’ve put together shows for album launches and other stadium style shows for SL musicians, and of course, we have had very wellreceived concept shows such as Le Cirque de la Nuit, The Midnight Dinner, at The Dickens Project, and Mayfair. These are some of my favorite performances, first because they engage my inner bookish nerd, and second because they provide great possibilities for collaboration, which, when it works, is so unbelievably satisfying.” Le Cirque de la Nuit is a kind of animated fanfic for a book called The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. It is a fantasy novel about a competition between “natural” (or inherited) talent for magic and the trained illusionist. This competition, run and rerun throughout time, is, in this instance, carried out within a traveling Victorian Circus. That Circus is the source for our performances. As Cherry tells BOSL, “We create acts that would be part of that circus, if The Night Circus ran Cirque de Soleil-style acts. Our love for it sprang from Gloriana Maertens, the environment builder, recommending the book to me as reading for pleasure; so striking was the visual aesthetic of the circus that we were quickly inspired to turn it into some kind of SL epic entertainment. We performed it for the first time in 2014. In 2018, after I resumed study and discovered there really isn’t enough time to do everything, Blaze DeVivre took over directing the show; her own loving vision of the source material has taken the show to greater heights, both technically and conceptually. I had previously conceived of The Beautiful Freaks Burlesque Circus, and it’s fair to say I am somehow called to recurring themes of sprawling clannish entertainers popping up almost magically to provide an unforgettable experience for audiences. You can tell I have put some thought into this justification for my lifestyle, huh?” Cherry is fun and kind and inspirational all at the same time. Her dance acts stem from her love for Indie and Alt music. “I have not owned a television since 2008. I have slept with a radio playing since I was a teenager, and I have been streaming and DJing LE CIRQUE DE LA NUIT
in SL for most of the time I have been here. My acts always start with a song, and that song may have been slipping and sliding around in my head for years before the elements suddenly start to knit together to form it into an act I think will resonate with an audience. One of the most important things to me as a performer is that the audience will connect to what I am trying to say to them. Often, when I am creating an act, I will imagine ‘what would [person I know and respect who would not necessarily attend a dance show] think of this? Would they get it? Would it bore them? Would they want to lay under the stars and talk about the ideas I am playing with?’ Oh, there I go over-thinking it again. Music and People… to me, that is it – the answer: Music and People.” Cherry has found SL changed her life. As many of us don’t want to admit, it can be an addiction for some of us— I like to think of it as a social network of friends. But, as Cherry notes, “Let’s be frank— being as involved as I am at this point with SL means I am sitting on my ass for 16 hours a day. That’s had some deleterious effects on my health, and that’s just one of the implications. But SL has taught me so much else, it’s impossible to enumerate. Very early on I realized as a real life single mother that there was no way I could choose to take money from my children to support the good SL. So, I chose to work. And working in SL taught me that I had a great skillset which could produce really satisfying outcomes. SL taught me who I like to work with and how I define what work is. It defined standards for me and showed me that one really can achieve things if the playing field is level for everyone from the start. SL showed me that it wasn’t true that I’d never be an artist and had no talent at creation. SL gave me great-hearted friends with visionary love and goodwill who live all around the world and who just want to connect, as I just want to connect. Most of all, SL taught me that, in a world where everyone is beautiful, it matters that you be a good person.”
