HOW TO GET YOURSELF BACK ON TRACK COCO ST. GEORGE
I
n a world where teleporting is the standard means of transportation, one would think there would be no interest in replicating the old art of railroad travel. To understand how the vast railroad network arose and developed into its current expanse, we have to consider that teleporting was not the universal feature we know today where we can go any place we wish (or for which we have the landmark). Railroads in Second Life first appeared as an initiative of private residents who were looking for a way to provide transportation where teleport wasn’t available. Seeing this interest, in 2006 Linden Labs invited residents to submit their designs to build train stations. From all 103 entries in that contest, eleven stations were chosen and built. And after all these years, they are still operational. By 2009, the Linden Department of Public Works built new stations. And of course, to link all those stations together, hundreds of miles of tracks were laid. In order to facilitate the use of the tracks for everybody, a standard was developed by the Virtual Rail Consortium, one of several organizations that take care of the railroad industry in SL. Nowadays, anyone can get the open-source script to use it in their own builds and ride the tracks around more than 80 regions on the Heterocera Atoll continent, among others. All this data may sound boring, but believe me, it has deep implications. First of all, it means that you can rez a box, drag the open-source script in it and, bam! You have yourself a machine that will drag you through the numerous railroad stations scattered through the Mainland. Not interested in traveling by box? Of course not! ALL ABOARD!
Why would you be when there is a magnificent and perfectly functional locomotive you can get for free? So, here’s what we’re going to do: the first stop in our journey will be Tuliptree Station, the headquarters of the Virtual Railroad Consortium. There, you will see a freebie wall with everything you are going to need for your newfound passion. For starters, get a train, of course. There are several available, and any of them will work. You may have noticed by now that you are in a rez zone. The station masters are kind enough to allow rezzing so you can enjoy the ride. The auto return times, though, can be strict— if you happen to get off the train to wander in the natural landscape, you may find your machine is gone, back in your Lost and Found folder. Once you sit on the locomotive, you’ll see a set of basic instructions. Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to read them all because you were distracted admiring your new toy. Simply click your ride, and you’ll see a menu with all you need to become a hardened engineer. After you press the start button, the locomotive will move forward on its own. You don’t need to press any key, except Page Up if you want to go faster. The initial speed is 10; every time you press Page Up, it increases by another 10. Conversely, every time you press Page Down, it decreases by 10 until it comes to a full stop. Since you are running on tracks, you don’t need to steer, either. The only time you need to worry about the direction you’re heading is when you reach a junction. There, you will find that the track splits in two and you have to choose which way to go. That’s what the track switches are for. These switches are round signs with an arrow pointing to the way selected. All you need to do is click the sign to switch tracks. Be sure to pay attention, as you will need to PHOTOS: COCO ST. GEORGE

ALL ABOARD!
click the sign at the right time to avoid going the wrong way. There is no reverse in these trains, but you can flip the locomotive (Shift + Left Arrow) to literally retrace your steps, go back, and try to switch tracks again. Don’t despair: as in any other human endeavor, driving a locomotive requires practice and patience. And all your efforts will be rewarded when you roam the continents aboard your powerful machine.

JACOB CROWLEY’S
MAMMOTH RIDGE Sita Writer
I
“Wear Your Love Like Heaven”
n these uncertain times on so many levels, we seek to find a place in SL— a place of joy and welcome. A sanctuary of sorts, perhaps, even a dream. Sometimes, we think of a safe place as just a place with good-hearted peeps where you can just be. So, if this appeals to you, then check out a place called Mammoth Ridge where all reality melts into the horizon. A place where you might want to set down some roots; a place that you might just call home in SL. In Mammoth, you are free to sing and dance … to live… and just be.
We liked it so much, we decided to ask creator Jacob Crowley all about it. “Like many of us, I found Second Life through an old friend. At first, I didn’t get it and quickly grew frustrated and lost interest in it. But something kept calling me back. I eventually answered that call and never looked back. I created my ’original account’ 13 years ago and immersed myself in the community. I started out like everyone else, as a lost noob struggling to make sense of this massive world. Eventually, the gears started clicking, and I started to learn more about Second Life— allowing myself to hone my skills and actually create my dreams. “ Jacob doesn’t run Mammoth alone— who could! Here is the deal: as Jacbob tells me, “I Co-Own Mammoth Ridge with my sister Cristina Amore. I have seven children whom I adore and would do anything for. I am big on exploring all SL. I love to build and run projects. These attributes help with my mind always running a million miles
and hour. My sister and I strive to bring Mammoth Ridge’s residents the very best of everything we offer.” When asked what inspired Jacob to build Mammoth, he said, “I get inspired from multiple sources all around Second Life. There is so much beauty (new and old) in Second Life, that it captivates the mind and makes us see that the sky is the limit in this world. If you can dream it, then you can create it.” I had to ask why Jacob called his build Mammoth Ridge – I thought perhaps it was named for some ancient dinosaur, but it was much more romantic than I expected, and we all love romance. “My sister Cristina and I went searching for the perfect mountain villages when we decided to start this journey. We went through hundreds of photos of mountain villages looking for inspiration, which eventually lead us to two villages called Mammoth. Mammoth, California, and Mammoth, Montana. We fell so in love with photos from both and their surrounding areas that we wanted to loosely base our village off of them. So we used the name Mammoth and added Ridge to the end to make it our own. We decided on Montana as the state where our village was located.” Jacob continues to explain that, “Mammoth is an inspiration of family Role Play communities, and we love them. When we decided to go through with building Mammoth Ridge, we took a lot of inspiration from previous communities we have been a part of. We also took inspiration from RL; combining the two has given us such amazing tools to realize and create our dreams for Mammoth Ridge.”
JACOB CROWLEY’S MAMMOTH RIDGE
In addition to many events and builds, Mammoth Ridge is an RP Community that focuses on community involvement. As Jacob says, “Aside from the normal aspects of a family Role Play, we strive to provide a town where all of the residents feel that they can be an active part of the community. We welcome our residents to create events, help vote for new additions, and be involved in shaping the town’s future. We have many amenities, including skiing, nature trails, a game room, an active school rp, and much more. Our residents host everything from live music events and science fairs to community yoga. The sky is the limit of what our community can bring to Mammoth Ridge.” At the end of the day, Jacob put it best: “Whether you are looking for a place to hang out— resident or not— to feel empowered, to have fun, to create amazing RP’s, and to have an active part of the shaping of the community… we want everyone to feel welcome at Mammoth Ridge. Our community is the most important aspect of everything we do. As such, we will always work on improving our community. And, at the end of the day… just be and love.”

BRING ON SUMMER Arya Braveheart
T
his month, I decided to show you some items in the event rounds right now that would be perfect for your summer decorating. I know there is half a month to go and plenty of amazing summer items to come from the incredible SL designers, but let’s take a look at some early designs. Today, I have seven items from seven designers that are at seven different events. These events are ones that commonly have home and garden items. By the time this article comes out, most of these events will have changed over to the new round, but you can always find these items at the designer’s main store. First, I wandered over to K9 to check out the items there and found this fabulous clothesline and accessories from Nutmeg. How lovely will your summer garden look with this displayed? I am pretty keen to acquire it for my garden. Next, I teleported into Equal 10 and had a lovely time looking about. I am sure this event has grown since I was last there. This hot tub from Bazar caught my eye, and I want all the accessories with it, as well. I am picturing sitting in there with a glass of bubbly. SWANK was next on my tour, and I found this set from Gay-way while I looked about. I love the shape of these chairs and the great plant shelves. These would suit a patio, around the pool, or even in a sunroom. These will be adorning my verandah area very soon!
have so many that would be just right in here. Go take a look at the outside next time you visit the designers’ main stores, but also make sure you visit the lovely Fameshed sim. Our tour would not be complete without a trip to Tres Chic, and I was excited to get this photo on the day the event opened. It was quite busy, so if you are going over, wait until a few days after opening! Anyway, I spied these great chairs and plants from CHEZ MOI. These will also be added to my verandah— or perhaps in my gazebo. I love that they are colour change, so they will suit anywhere. Bee Designs was an easy choice when I visited Access. It almost jumped out at me when I visited the demo area. It is definitely a perfect choice for a beach area and I love the colours. Teal always screams of summer. Imagine this surrounded by palm trees and beautiful azure waters. Lastly, I skipped over to Collabor88 and spent quite a while there wandering about before I decided to photograph this Trompe Loeil pool. I am lucky enough to blog for Trompe Loeil, so I set it up on my land to do the photo. This pool comes with the base as shown, or on its own, so it can be utilised in a variety of ways whether it be the garden, patio, or even on a roof! Your choice. So, as you prepare for summer, make sure you get about the events and main stores to find the amazing items that are already coming out. I am super excited to see what the designers throw our way this summer in SL. Enjoy!
If you need a new dwelling for summer, then this darling caravan from Atelier Burgundy x Pitaya would be just right. I love the modern colours inside and the spaces for knick knacks. I BRING ON SUMMER

PR ACTICING VISUALIZ ATION
FOR FITNESS IN SECOND LIFE Rob Santana
V
isualization is creating a state of mind to help you to achieve a desired outcome. Many examples exist where this can be worked on in Second Life. Perhaps the most common example is when it comes to our RL fitness journeys. We all know that trying to start a regular fitness routine on your own can be hard if you don’t have access to a gym. Everything starts in the mind, so why not take some time out of your second life to create some fitness goals and share the experience with your friends?
This month, I’m going to share a bit with you about the SML virtual gym that has many locations to visit and workout in with your partner, alone, or with friends, surrounded by other avatars focused on their workouts. Just a quick mention, massive body building avatars are available for you to try, however, I prefer to stick with my Signature Gianni body and just enjoy the gym for normal fitness. It’s a personal preference how you want to look, so don’t feel like you need to have a muscle bound body to use this gym— quite a few avatars stick to
P R AC T I C I N G V I SUA L I Z AT I O N F O R F I T N E S S I N S L
their current mesh body and just go there to have a fun work out. So what are the steps to get started? You’ll need to visit an SML gym and join the group: [SML] TRAINING GROUP This will allow you to get your fitness HUD and your workout of the day. You will need to visit an SML gym to do your workout. Once you reach a fitness level of 15, you can buy your own gym equipment and set up your own gym, but for the first 15 levels, you will need to head out to one of the existing public gyms. Visiting a certified SML Gym will allow you to
pick up a free HUD, wristband, and gym bag that will enable you to do a 1 hour + daily workout . The workout for the next day starts at 5 pm SLT, and you can only accumulate work out points by regularly showing up to work out for the hour you are given. Sometimes, you can earn bonuses for additional work out time. PHOTOS: ROB SANTANA

BUILDING YOUR OWN GYM The catch for buying the gym equipment is you need to reach level 17 on your exercise HUD, which should take about three weeks of workouts to achieve.
Be sure to put on your workout HUD to confirm your fitness level, and you will be eligible to buy it. You also need the fitness pack in order to send the daily workout to visitors coming to work out in your gym. Building your own personal gym can set you back a bit, but it’s honestly a great way to get together with a friend and work out or set out to meet others, or just get a workout routine established and benefit from the visualization experience which helps develop a healthy mindset doing something positive each day. You can also get your gym certified to be in the SML Training Group to open your gym up to the public. In the gym I’ve built with my wife Rya, we’ve added a locker room with a shower and additional P R AC T I C I N G V I SUA L I Z AT I O N F O R F I T N E S S I N S L
gym items for fun on the second floor. That’s the
beauty of Second Life: we can make our ideal dream gym and build it our way., After all, we are here to experience things in the virtual world from the comfort of our own home. Now, if you work out at home in RL with nothing more than a pair of dumbels, you can learn over 20 dumbel exercise from SML Training that translate to RL. Not everyone has the space for a home gym, but these dumbbell exercises give an excellent upper body workout.
Personally, I’ve been doing more upper body workouts with the dumbbells I have at home since I’ve been using the SML Gym in Second Life with my wife Rya. I honestly think it makes a difference. Things we do in Second Life can easily carry over to our real lives with positive results; you also may make a new friend or two while you work out. Have a great Second Life!
One good place to set up your SL gym is in a skybox, and I recommend using an “anywhere go walking” tp device to head into the gym. It’s a cool way to teleport to another location, as all you do is place it near an entry way you want for your gym. Clicking the “anywhere go walking” arrow will animate your avatar to walk through a doorway and teleport you to your gym skybox. The same device will send you back to the gym entrance when you are done working out.
