WEEKEND BARGAINS

{YOUR DREAMS} - STAFFORD DINING (60L WEEKEND)

Arya Braveheart

S

ummer has hit SL, and that means it is time to change over from green grass and trees to sand and sunshine. It is also time to rez the pool and get out the palm trees.

But how do you spruce up your home without spending loads of Lindens? Easy! You just need to take advantage of the amazing weekend sales and bargains to be had. Loads of these events take place around SL, and today I am going to show you four events that I always check out as each one contains high quality home & garden items. It is the perfect way to do a home makeover without breaking the budget. The first is a long-running event in SL called Fifty Linden Friday. The name explains the event, as each item is priced at 50L and it starts and ends on Friday.

The photos I am including with this article are of some of the items I picked up over the weekend, and I made sure I have included at least one item from each of the events mentioned above. I have put them in the garden at the back of my house to take the photos, as I wanted you to see each item as a stand-alone. I didn’t take the photos at the event so that you can see the items easily with only trees and grass to provide some ambience! I hope you discover for yourself that these events provide great quality items at a fraction of their value. I also hope you take the time to look at each designer’s store while you visit, and see what other amazing items they have on show. It is a great way to find new stores.

The second falls on Saturday and is called The Saturday Sale. Items are no more than 75L, and it is a HUGE event. The notecard drops for group members around 9pm on a Friday night. Wanderlust Weekend is the third event, with items at the 50L mark. I also like this one as the items hit the fantasy mark, which is handy if that is your style or if you just want some cool, quirky pieces. The last one, and by no means the least, is 60L Weekend. Again, the title says it all, with items being 60L or less. This event starts on Saturday and finishes on Sunday. Just so you know, all of these events are not limited to home & garden items: they also contain fashion, accessories, hair, poses, and everything else. However, I will say that most of my shopping items are for my house or blogging purposes— although I am partial to some shoes, hair, and poses as the mood takes me. PHOTOS: ARYA BRAVEHEART

A POWER COUPLE

AMAZES SECOND LIFE Coco St. George

What happens when talent combines with passion, and both find a fertile ground to grow?

F

rom the classic Victorians Gilbert and Sullivan to the modern-era Sondheim and Hammerstein or Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber— much like the power couples of the musical world, we in Second Life have found the powerful collaboration of Red Hykova Antonius and Steve Ruhig-Allen: founders, producers, choreographers, and the heart and soul of River Island Performing Arts and Theater.

And just as it usually happens in Real Life, this couple was brought about by a chance encounter— this time at The Oval Theater back in 2015. “I’d had no experience with SL theatre at that point,” says Steve, “but Red kindly showed me the ropes. I soon found all aspects of theatrical production utterly fascinating.” “From the moment we met, we clicked”, adds Red. “We share the same enthusiasm and eagerness to learn new things, and I always enjoyed producing with Steve; over the years we have learned and experimented together.” But, alas! The Oval Theatre disbanded. Having been bitten by the stage bug, they decided to start their own theatrical company. “We had produced two shows together back at The Oval,” remembers Steve, “so we had some idea of how to manage things.” “After The Oval Theatre closed,” says Red, “and everyone dispersed, Steve and I were cast adrift; we were theatre-less! And yet we wanted to continue; we had a lot more that we wanted to do, so many ideas!” Far from seeing their situation as a setback, they took the opportunity “to create together the kind of theatre experience we knew would excite our audiences,” as Red puts it. “We acquired our own sim, Big Bang, and have never regretted it,” says Steve. “Running a theatre is sometimes a chore—

logistics, scheduling, making sure everyone is happy with roles and costumes, etc. —but always, always, worth the effort. It has been a grand experience!” “We had a lot of support and encouragement from friends and patrons of The Oval,” adds Red. “So much so that Christo Spyker and Tim Waco of the incredibly beautiful River Island Sim invited us to set up our new theatre there. It was an exciting time. Our first new performance would coincide with Christmas, so we worked on ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’, a beautifully vibrant Christmas ballet, and it was a huge success— a full audience every performance and wonderful feedback.” The reader may have a glimpse of the vibrant and creative work Red and Steve did for the Nutcracker in this YouTube video. Over the years, their repertoire has grown to include musicals, ballets, dance shows, and a series of Cabaret shows called “After Dark”, musical revues targeted to adult audiences. Below are some of the shows they have produced and performed in the last couple years: Chicago the Musical The New Moon in the Old Moon’s Arms Sweeney Todd Rocky Horror Picture Show The Nutcracker and the Mouse King Make ‘em Laugh World Tapestry of Dance West Side Story All of Me Some Nights Grease Quirk du Soleil

RIVER ISL AND PERFORMING ART S AND THEATER

As wide and diverse as their repertoire is, they couldn’t tell how they decided to pick which show to work on. “We chat a lot about ideas for new shows,” explains Red, “and throw suggestions back and forth, and then it’s as if we both latch on to the same idea! And away we go! “Ideas often emerge from talking together,” intervenes Steve. “We’ve created entire shows that way. But sometimes one or the other of us has a pet project we would like to do, and in that case the person whose ‘baby’ it is tends to take the lead in musical selection, planning and development.” A great deal of their work involves building and scripting in Second Life. Both see that as a formidable but exciting challenge. “I came to Second Life primarily to build, to be creative,” recalls Red. “I made friends on my first day with a girl with whom I’m still friends after all these years, Monica Wier. She was very generous with her time, passing on her building skills to me and dropping by to offer tips or suggestions to help me. For many years I would log in at night time on a platform in the sky and build, build, build. I’ve always found it relaxing, unwinding, therapeutic after a long day at real life work.”

attention to detail and the progress we make by expanding on our ideas and making them even better next time.” “I met Red just as she was on the verge of a great creative leap,” says Steve, “and it’s as if she took me by the hand and said, ‘Come along!’ Fortunately, she has a far better eye for stage design than I have or ever will. So, we complement each other nicely.” And regarding the future: currently they are working on a series of ballets based on string quartets by Beethoven, Debussy, and Shostakovich. These will be premiering in early June. A revival of “L’Histoire du monde” is also on the drawing board. And there’s also talk of producing Miss Saigon, the hit musical by Claude-Michael Schonberg, Alain Boublil, and Richard Maltby Jr. If you want to keep informed about these and other exciting developments around RIPA, you may join Fans of RIPA, an SL group devoted to spreading the news about this amazing troupe, whose motto seems to be “We can do anything!”

“At first, of course, I socialized,” says Steve. “Soon I discovered building, and at that point figuring out how to make things took up much of my time. Then I discovered scripting, and I was totally hooked! But none of those things compares to theatre, which embraces all of them in a uniquely creative way.” Working together has been an expansive and transformative experience for them both. “I think Steve and I work really well together,” explains Red, “because we inspire each other, we are similarly creative, in both our PHOTOS : COCO ST. AEDO CompE Lockwood

F

riday afternoon, the crowd goes wild— and rightly so. For how can you not be thrilled experiencing Queen in concert, virtually, from the comfort of your own home?

Except this is not Queen— though he’s pretty darn close. The showman performing as the rock legend is Aedo Destiny, and he is nailing it. Close your eyes, and you’re listening to Freddie Mercury. “Aedo is always high energy,” notes his manager, Medea Difference, with a smile. “The show is like actually listening to Queen,” she adds as Aedo croons “Can anybody find me somebody to love.” Aedo has found love. It lives in his music and through his fans.

some gigs, I had a great answer from the audience.” Short version: The crowd went wild— and still does. Aedo currently performs in dozens of clubs throughout SL. His music is all Queen and all good. He has been part of “The Queen History” and in theaters throughout Italy. He has also performed at Second Life’s 17 Birthday Party— an official event hosted by Linden Lab. His Second Life music career began when he met Medea, who became his manager. “After seeing his first show, I knew he had talent,” Medea says about the first time she heard Second Life’s’ Freddie Mercury sound-alike. She helped the new performer find gigs and club dates, and the rest is history.

“I love Queen and appreciate how Aedo does “In RL, I sing my original songs which include Queen’s music,” says this evening’s front row Queen,” Aedo notes. “But in Second Life, my niche follower Rachel. Another advocate of the Queen is Queen.” Medea adds, “Aedo is a great composer facsimile is Artu, who adds, “I follow his shows because I’m a Queen fan and an Aedo fan.” and producer in RL, too.” He brings his talent to SL. Tributes go on and on, and so does Aedo. A standard show is an hour, with 15 Queen tunes. Double that for a two-hour gig as the hits just keep on coming. Aedo notes he has loved singing since childhood days in Rome. “I’ve performed professionally for about 20 years,” the Italian songster explains, interviewed from his office before tonight’s show. “I’m now 38, so I guess I’ve sang almost my entire adult life.” His RL venues include Italy, Spain, and New York City. So how did this talented European make the switch from Roma to SL? We owe it to COVID-19. “I wasn’t getting much work in RL because of the coronavirus,” Aedo recalls, “so I decided to try Second Life during the quarantine lockdown. At first, I did not believe this would work, but after

He notes that his voice is his best skill. “My similarity with Freddie Mercury’s voice helped me a lot in this,” he says about mirroring Queen. “People tell me, my voice is very similar to Mercury’s.” Medea adds “I totally agree! I have had friends listen to Aedo’s voice and they believed it was Freddie’s! Aedo is a special person and a great artist, that I can say with no doubts.” His song list is the quintessential all things Queen, including: “Keep Yourself Alive,” “Tie Your Mother Down,” “Now I’m Here,” “Love of My Life,” “Somebody To love,” “Fat Bottomed Girl,” “Killer Queen,” “ Bohemian Rhapsody,” “ Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “One Vision, In My Defense,” “I Want It All,” “The Show Must Go On,” “We Will Rock You,” and of course, “We Are The Champions.”

The beauty of Second Life is that those fortunate enough to experience a Queen concert, can probably just sit and listen with little interaction in the real world. But that is not so in the second one. Aedo works the crowd, calls people by name, interacts with the audience on a personal level. His audience (like Queen’s) is from all over the world, but during the concert, we are all one, enjoying the music and performer. “I love to sing, in RL and in SL,” says Aedo. “The difference in my RL shows is that I write / compose much of my own music. In SL, I perform Queen. The showman who just belted out “We Are the Champions” as dancing laser lights illuminates the stage, notes, “I love being here.” His audience agrees and can sum up tonight’s event in the words of Queen: We Will Rock You. Aedo most certainly does. For more information on Aedo, including his show schedules, contact: KING AEDO LIVE SHOWS Calander

“Every soul is different, every individual will connect to a certain music genre and/or certain dance style. So it’s really about what the dancer finds beautiful that inspires their art and sharing.” - Johnny

D

ance and movement can be defined in many ways in SL and RL. One of the most entrancing and entertaining creators is Johnny CEO of Paragons of Dance. Johnny has one of the most evocative definitions of what we all feel when we dance, walk, or even move, for that matter, on the grid… and so much more. “Dance is one of the highest forms of movement artistry. To me, being from Hawaii, dance is like surfing on the sound waves of music. When truly in the moment, the dancer becomes connected to the essence of the music and is not physically dependent on choreography; they become an instrument that channels their art— that is the moment you see true magic in its purest form.” Johnny believes at that point it doesn’t matter what dance style you have… rather, that dance becomes about living in the moment and sharing to create that communion between the audience and performer. As Johnny reflects on his gaming life, he tells BOSL that he likes challenges and has been a “gamer” for years. His first game was an MMORPG, a game that he holds with a special affection, until he learned about SL— eventually. “I first heard about Second Life from two Gorean friends that were my raiding officers. But since I’m a ‘one game kinda guy’, I dismissed any notion of checking out SL.” After breaking his video gaming addiction and taking a break from screenwriting, Johnny started to dabble in SL, something he considered a harmless browser game he heard about. “Out of sheer boredom, I took a peek...and I was condemned to virtual heaven— or hell (however you look at it)! I think SL is more of an abduction. This is when I realized why the Second Life logo is a hand and an eye.” Johnny, the genius behind Paragons of Dance, is a very visual person. As Johnny describes it, “curiosity brought me to SL, and addiction kept me here.” Johnny recalls that his first SL experience

PA R AG O N S O F DA N C E

was running around the grid in child-like wonder. “The grid is like a canvas where you can create virtually anything. It is like living in a dream. After a year, I gathered the strength to leave and swore never to return.” Eventually, an RL friend asked Johnny to show him the ropes. “At first I said ‘no’,” he explains, having been worried about rekindling his addiction. “But I figured he got me my new RL apartment at a steal and it was the least I could do to thank him. Sure enough, I got drawn back in. At first, I hated him for it, but now I am eternally grateful because if he never convinced me to return, my life wouldn’t be where it is right now.” Johnny is perceptive and saw something missing in SL in terms of movement. After thinking about it, Johnny found a way to merge his three passions: videogames, dance, and making money. “I thought to myself, if I am going to get addicted to something (like SL), I better make money off of it because I have to constantly keep myself in reality check with my mantra: ‘if it doesn’t make any dollars, then it doesn’t make any sense.’” So, when Johnny returned to SL, he noticed that there was a gap in the types of dances offered. “There were no Latin dances, no k-pop dances, no heels dances, no American Hip Hop dances. I decided that something had to be done because this was an untapped market. I saw a huge opportunity to bring something different to the game, and that is how Paragon began.” In a nutshell, Johnny’s goal is to bring Alist dancers that create viral YouTube videos to Second Life, making Paragon unique in SL. “As a dancer myself, I was always inspired by these real life iconic dancers on social media. As a producer of 20 years in the entertainment industry, I had the experience and knowledge on how to deal with talent agents. I certainly had all the tools. The most daunting part was execution.” In terms of animations, Johnny is a futurist— something that is now and will always be appreciated for years to come. “Paragon is all about bringing dance to a new level with a ‘wow’ factor. This is accomplished by bringing a high-level dance

Bosl edition 64

performance from pro-dancers and A-list dancers. These dancers are represented by some of the toptier dance talent agencies in Hollywood. Some are social media influencers and/or worked with big recording stars as backup dancers or as celebrity choreographers. Many of these influencers have viral videos out there, and there is a reason why they are viral. These are the bankable stars in the Hollywood dance world, as stars like Will Smith and Tom Cruise are on the silver screen.” Johnny is constantly working to acquire the top dancers and to make the best dance animations in terms of aesthetics and technical quality. Recently, Paragon worked with a founding member of the Pussycat Dolls and her new dance troupe Cherry Boom Boom. They created a pom pom dance from their show’s dance number, along with a special HUD where a dancer can throw the pom poms. They also brought CBBs innovation to Second life— the first monkey bar dances. And this is only the beginning, because Johnny wants Paragon to continue to raise the bar and push the limits. “I don’t want to get complacent in this competitive market, and the last thing I want is our dances looking the same. Every set is as special and unique as the dancers who created them with their own style.” People have danced before there was a word for it. Rhythmic body movements are instinctive, and Johnny has captured this. Dance connects people and springs from a personal expression and social connection to feel good. “Art to me is a never-ending search and an evolving process. I always joked that I’m just the evangelist who preaches the art of these Rl A-list dancers— the dance gods, aka ‘Paragons of Dance’. My RL dancers are the true talent and source of inspiration, and all this would not be possible without them. I’m just the visionary producer who handpicked them. Each dancer is unique and brought something different and special to the Paragon pantheon. There’s a saying in the dance world: ‘Dance is Life’, and my vision is using these high profile dancers to breathe new life in SL through dance.” At the end of the day, Johnny is an idealist. “I want to be the bridge between the real world and the virtual PA R AG O N S O F DA N C E

world. I want to bring SL back to the glory days when celebs like Duran Duran performed here or when big real world companies like Coca Cola and IBM had a presence here. The technology has come a long way since then, and I would like to see SL become more mainstream. I’ve started to use my position with the help of my dance influencers to generate awareness about Second Life to the public. I strongly believe that Second Life and the virtual social platform is the proto-VR of the future. Although Second Life is still regarded as ‘underground’, what the general public doesn’t know is that it is ahead of its time and it’s the way of the future.”

WHERE OUR JOURNEY BEGINS

SUMMER OF 21 Sammie Audion

A

nd again, another summer comes around. Typically, during the summer months, Second Life (SL) gets much more quiet compared to the rest of the year. People enjoy the beaches, their vacation, perhaps some mountain hikes in Real Life (RL). However, this is a summer unlike we have seen in what seems like an age. Hence, we could argue that all bets are off as far as this summer goes. Granted, COVID-based restrictions are mostly lifted— at least, as far the US goes. But that does not necessarily mean that this summer will be business as usual. Not everyone who can usually afford a summer vacation can this summer. Whatever one’s options might be, the desire for sun and fun grew strong in most of us. We long for outdoor activities, some relaxation, and of course, unrestricted social interaction. If this describes you at least to some point, then this is where our journey begins. ‘Where our Journey Begins’ is the name of a wonderful beach-themed installment at Whispering Windz. Enjoy the rejuvenating waterfalls, relaxing beaches, the really cool venue, and much more to give you the feel of a splendid summer vacation. The place reminds much of one of the beach cities in Southern California. Get ready: Surfing, swimming, and outdoor dining is awaiting you. The designer for this sim definitely had the photographers of SL in mind. Many perfectly decorated scenes create various summer impressions, giving you the feeling of actually being there. The fact that the place has people (well, not avatars, but ‘people’) really helps with making great shots. Lovely houses are certainly inspiring, and WHERE OUR JOURNEY BEGINS

with the right light settings— whether preset by Windlights or done yourself using EEP —beautiful shots can be created. After all, taking pictures is a relaxing and creative hobby in SL, and shots from here would look great on any Flickr page. The arrival area is at the entry of a nice courtyard, which has a lovely Italian-style pizzeria with just a couple of tables. They do have a serious Pizza oven inside, so the food might be amazing! There is also a little cafe serving heavenly sweets. What a perfect place to start this virtual vacation, don’t you think? After a nice meal, the journey may commence. On the way down to the beach waits a little sitting area with an old typewriter. What an inspiring little spot for some creative writing— the story might almost flow over the sheets on its own. And this is just one of many sitting areas or photogenic scenes, as mentioned earlier. Might it be a little bench, some tables with chairs, or simply a towel laid out at the beach or a blanket draped over two branches of a low tree. There seems to be no end of motives— or settings for you (the motive) whatever style of photography you prefer. When continuing the excursion along the beach, one might eventually arrive at this totally stylish pub. Depending if one took the long route to get here, some food might be indicated or perhaps simply a little refreshment— perhaps a nice glass of cool and fresh Rosé to relax and enjoy the sunny afternoon? All over this idyllic island are lovely flowers, nice trees placed to create those secluded scenes perfect for a romantic getaway with a loved one . Limiting this place to photography only would be a serious

mistake. In fact, this is an ideal place for a date— for both a new love or one that has already lasted years. Why not celebrate the anniversary here? It goes without saying that this is also a lovely place to ride your horse and enjoy nature at Whispering Windz— and there is certainly plenty of nature to explore here. A waterfall feeds a beautiful pond. Of course, nature is not limited to plants: you can find ducks on the pond, flamingos down at the beach. Can you find more animals? Looking closely, one can find so much more. A rocky arch is reaching over the sandy beach a little ways in the back there. Interested in checking out what’s behind it? So, if you are looking for a little beach holiday, a romantic getaway, or simply a new photo destination, this truly can be ‘Where our journey begins’.
