BBABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE.
Yes, it is the time of year when snuggling near a cozy fire sounds like the best-laid plan and a warm libation on a snowy evening is just the ticket. Wintertime in Colorado is chock full of opportunities for escapades and adventures. Adventures that are all the more meaningful when shared with a special someone. With that, we welcome you to our first ever “Love Issue.”
Falling in love is perhaps the best feeling there is. It’s new and exciting. It’s curious and carefree. It’s brimming with possibility and delightful in its anticipation. But staying in love is the most gratifying emotion in the world. It requires constant work and care. Support and nurturing. Unending respect and relentless determination. It’s not easy, but it’s entirely worth it. In The Power of Love (page 69) we sit down with three of Colorado’s most notable “power couples” to get their take on love, marriage and life’s balancing act. From making time for romance in the midst of an impossibly busy schedule, to valuing and appreciating one’s partner, their words of wisdom and love stories are both inspiring and enduring.
Of course, staying in love and celebrating love also require plenty of date nights and romantic respites. In Date Book (page 89) we break down where to unwind with your sweetie, both near and afar. From date nights in Denver to mountain escapes all the way to the perfect fantasy proposal, we have you covered.
Particularly at this time of year, we tend to reflect on what is most important to us and the kind of relationships we wish to nurture. For me, it has never been more clear that while yes, the pages of this periodical are indeed my “baby,” my true heart and soul is my husband and business partner, Kevin. Because we work together with little more than a thin wall separating us 24/7, our relationship is not without its challenges. In fact, many people who learn of our situation say something to the effect of “I could never work with my spouse.” Well, we agree. It is certainly not ideal to have no real time apart and to exist, both literally and figuratively, in such close quarters. To have very blurred lines between business and marriage. Yet we make it work. Day in and day out, we put in the effort to make our relationship work. To me, that’s what it’s all about. Knowing that it’s not going to be easy but that it’s going to be so completely worth it is the basis for real, true, lifelong love.
After all, no relationship is all sunshine, but two people can share one umbrella and survive the storm together.
Cheers to love, in all of its forms.
Yours in style, Betsy

the historic May D&F clock tower – a Denver landmark steeped in history and ensconced in celebration. As stylish as it is significant, prior to 1950 the structure stood as the home of the May Daniels and Fischer department store – the city’s literal and figurative pinnacle of fashion during its earliest days. Built in 1911 and designed by architect F. G. Sterner, the D & F Tower was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi, at a height of 393 feet. Visitors to the 20th floor used to be able to see 200 miles in any direction. Today, the tower’s stunning top five floors primarily stand as a space for private events and weddings – a photographer’s dream. clocktowerevents.com

Kate Spade New York has always been one of our fave fashion designers and now her team has taken its signature flair and created its first-ever furniture collection. With a clever reimagined twist on classic elegance, they’ve partnered with companies like Jaipur (rugs) and E.J. Victor (furniture) to design a darling selection of lighting, furniture, rugs, case goods and textiles that embrace the brand’s capricious sense of whimsy. This collection joins the company’s existing lines of bedding, dinnerware, desk accessories and stationery—bringing Kate Spade’s combination
of sass and class into every room of the house. We simply adore the Drake Slipper chair and the polka dot Downing Desk (Must. Have. Now.) and are smitten with the modish glam of the Georgia Bench. “We cannot wait to see how our customers layer our pieces into their homes to express their own interesting, personal style,” Chief Creative Officer Deborah Lloyd explains. The new collection features an interactive website with imagined spaces, where in Apartments 3-E, 1-B and 2-A, one can explore themes by scrolling over the rooms. “Cocktails at 7, Dinner at 8,” for example, leads into a dining room where one can get every fabulous detail from glasses to chairs to napkin and coaster sets. The page is also peppered with helpful advice on constructing your environment - the “why don’t you…” snippets are a prescription for living well. Don’t mind if we do.

Gray Malin’s fine art photographs are the perfect blend of travel, adventure and daydreams that transport us each time we see them. A bright reminder of the jetset lifestyle, Los-Angeles based Malin’s images give us a glimpse of the high life, whether it’s rows of colorful beach umbrellas in Positano or two cowboys in front of the famed Prada Marfa installation on the plains of Texas. Now, Malin has turned his eye toward the iconic Parker Hotel in Palm Springs in a new series, At The Parker. Just in time to escape our winter doldrums with a welcomed dose of cheer, one of our favorite hotels is now the setting of an extraordinary photo shoot from one of our favorite artists. Malin has reimagined this classic respite with the help of a crew of exotic animals. Room Service features a bell-boy monkey, PoolBoys is a pair of penguins by The Parker’s renowned pool, AfternoonCroquet shows a giraffe in promenade across the court. Each of the photos in the series adds a feeling of humor and brightness that draws us into the beautiful backdrop of one of the desert town’s most definitive spaces. True to stylish form, Malin’s photos provide the perfect wintertime fantasy and we can’t wait to dive in.
They say great minds think alike, and the adage couldn’t be truer for globetrotting pals Tasha Frye and Kelle McCarter – the tour de force behind The Royal Box. A collection of curated containers made for the discriminating gift-giver, the Colorado-based company unites the creative talents of Tasha, a floral designer and Kelle, a fine stationer and calligrapher. The pair conceived the idea after struggling time and again to find uniquely packaged gifts that spoke to their tastes and aesthetic. What appears as a plain crate-like box is actually a highly personalized set of gifts that will make any recipient swoon. The gals work closely with their clients to create bespoke boxes for any occasion: weddings, housewarmings, baby showers and more. Some are themed: The Parisian Box features items culled from a recent trip to France—Fleur de Sel, a cube of French-milled soap and a book on Provence - while the Adventure box features a European leather-covered flask, a travel guide and a compass paper-weight. The singular items that Kelle and Tasha hand-pick are what makes the boxes so oneof-a-kind, designed with the recipient’s own personality in mind. A hot-chocolate box is the perfect winter warmer, while one featuring a bison-horn handled letter opener might be just right for the boss or dear old dad. In a world of gift cards, their concept gives back the best part of gift-giving - opening the lid to discover something of wonder that takes your breath away. Added bonus? Each Royal Box delivery may also include a fresh cut bouquet of stunning florals.

BITTER BETTY
When Shae Whitney was tending bar in Denver, she couldn’t get past the synthetic flavors being used. With that, the Colorado native began tinkering with old-fashioned bitters and herbal medicinal tonics of her own, eventually growing into what is now Dram Apothecary, her artisanal line of potions. Having studied food science, botany and ecological agriculture, making the leap to foraging was a no-brainer for Whitney. The entrepreneurial mixologist spends about 20 hours a week foraging, then returns to her apothecary and cocktail bar to distill the plants she’s collected into bitters, tonics, teas and syrups. Located in a former bakery, the shop is found in the (almost) ghost town of Silver Plume (pop. 170, about 50 miles west of Denver), where Whitney and her boyfriend, Brady Becker, retreated to escape Denver’s crowds and get closer to nature. While Dram’s products—with flavors like wild mountain sage and juniper-rose—can be found at a handful of bars on the Denver cocktail scene, the Dram cocktail bar is open for service on weekends. Now, Whitney and Becker (with the help of a kickstarter campaign) have secured funds to convert a nearby building, which used to house the secret society the Knights of Pythias, into the Dram Lodge. Guests will enjoy a rustic mountain retreat after indulging in Dram’s signature cocktails and the space will also host music and events. Admirably, Whitney has revived not just a more flavorful way to create spirits, but part of the spirit of the old west as well. Ring 720.608.0063 // dramapothecary.com //

About Face
After spending almost a decade as a makeup artist and cosmetics line creator, Boulder beauty maven Bre Ortola was bound and determined to address the unique challenges so many women face today: not enough time or cash to spend the day at a spa, but a desire to pamper, indulge and care for their skin. “I wanted to create a place where I would personally go—where you could come in bi-weekly or monthly and take care of your skin.” With this notion in mind, Ortola took her all-natural makeup line, Alchemy Mineral Blends, and dreamed up another concept - Alchemy Face Bar. Bre began eight years ago by using her line on beauties across Colorado, prepping them for weddings and photo shoots. Yet at her newly launched full service beauty bar, busy women on the go can pop in, get a facial and leave in under 45 minutes feeling refreshed and beautified. Her quick-service facials are priced right, too—proving that women can look good, feel great and still have money in the bank. Services range from brow and lash tinting, permanent lash extensions and facial waxing to microderm and derma plane, peels and hydration facials (mission critical in Colorado’s dry climate). Located on Pearl Street in the heart of Boulder, guests walk into a hip, elegant space with an open-floor concept. “We created a place where everyone can relax. I want women to feel comfortable, have a sense of community and be pampered.” Alchemy’s beauty menu allows guests to mix and match custom services based on their skin’s needs. A chemical peel is priced at just $15 and combined with a face mask and collagen facial, a full treatment comes in at right around $50. Ortola’s no-nonsense approach doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to embrace Alchemy’s ethos “in skin and spirit.” You’ll walk out in less than an hour having shared in the face bar’s fun and convivial atmosphere while getting your skin totally revamped. After a pumpkin peel, a warming mask and being slathered in the natural Nahla line’s Amia instant repair, we walked out looking amazing and feeling totally hydrated. Another favorite is the super-luxe Gold Facial, a 24-karat gold collagen hydration mask that freshens and plumps the skin. Alchemy Face Bar features a beautiful retail space, where the full line of Alchemy Mineral products can be purchased. In the other half of the space is Rose (an offshoot of Boulder’s Nod and Rose), where you can shop for a hip clutch, necklace or top to complement your service. The space is also ideal for events —you and your gaggle of girls can shop, have a facial and get your makeup done, all within a short time frame and without breaking the bank. One more insider tip: Alchemy has plans to expand into Denver in 2016.

THE BREAKERS
IT MIGHT BE THE MOST ICONIC STRETCH OF SAND ANYWHERE. WITH A HISTORY THAT SPANS TWO CENTURIES AND MONIKERS LIKE KENNEDY, PULITZER AND POST APPEARING IN THE LOCAL DIRECTORY, PALM BEACH HAS EARNED ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE AS THE PLAYGROUND DU JOUR FOR THE PRIVILEGED AND PEDIGREED.
WORDS BY BETSY MARR
FROM TONY WORTH AVENUE TO ANTIQUE ROW, the town that Henry Flagler built some 125 years ago has both survived and thrived as a resort enclave cloaked in tradition. And at its epicenter is The Breakers. The oldest and most genteel of the hotels that dot Palm Beach’s picturesque coastline, The Breakers has been opening its idyllic doors to the well off and well heeled since 1893. Originally erected as The Palm Beach Inn, two fires ravaged the property in the early 1900s. In 1925, oil tycoon and town patriarch Henry Morrison Flagler resurrected The Breakers as we know it, rebuilding it to epic proportions. Steeped in superlative history, The Breakers remains one of the few privately owned resorts of its stature, with Flagler family heirs ensuring that the grand property maintains its luster and allure by investing more than $25 million in capital annually. And it shows. In all 140 oceanfront acres, it shows.
Jetsetter
The Property
Built in the Italian renaissance style, The Breakers is an oceanfront inn perfectly perched along Florida’s Atlantic coastline, on the island of Palm Beach. Spanning 140 acres, the property boasts a full half mile of private beach access that sets the stage for the grand, expansive resort. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the modern-classic hotel exhibits a timeless atmosphere that reflects the elegant comforts and personalization of a stately residence, but energized with a youthful, familyminded philosophy.
With an exterior as opulent and impressive as its interior, guests of The Breakers arrive via a 1,040foot main drive that leads to the recognizable Florentine Fountain (modeled after those seen at the Boboli Gardens in Italy). Once at the entrance, twin arched Belvedere towers patterned after Rome’s Villa Medici lead guests into a lobby reminiscent of the Great Hall of the Palazzo Carega. Yet despite its grandeur, the property remains warm - evocative of a fabled estate as opposed to a sprawling hotel.
The Accommodations
Rooms at The Breakers are a far cry from the typical trappings of everyday hotel spaces. Whether your budget warrants a guest room or grand suite, décor is tasteful and on trend, brimming with the preppy sense of whimsy for which Palm Beach is known. Clean, bright interiors and playful patterns appoint thoughtfully chosen textiles and wall coverings, while oceanfront views are ever-present in many of the property’s rooms. The fashionista will want to opt for the Imperial Designer Suite, decorated by power duo Mark Badgley and James Mischka.
For the luxist and for the privacy seeker, find your haven at the newly opened Flagler Club
A boutique hotel within the hotel itself, Flagler Club is an ultra posh 25 room space with a dedicated concierge and over-the-top amenities – think car service via the Club’s Tesla and a private lounge and terrace where four distinctive culinary offerings (and cocktails, of course) are served daily.
The Activities
There’s no better place to practice the art of doing nothing than The Breakers. Specifically, the property’s Mediterranean style Beach Club Even more specifically, its four swimming pools, five whirlpool spas and 25 private cabanas. Laze the day away as you sip on the signature “skin-
ny” Pina Coladas and nosh on the Club’s conch fritters (Aerin Lauder’s favorite). If you’re so inclined, skip the pool deck and nestle into the sand under one of the colorful striped umbrellas as you watch the waves crash along the shore. For those who prefer a more active day in the sun, the Club can arrange for scuba, snorkeling, coral reef tours, deep sea fishing, private yacht charters, surf lessons and more.
For the link lovers, two 18-hole championship courses with sweeping ocean views are begging you to test your handicap. In particular, The Breakers Ocean Course stakes claim as Florida’s oldest 18-hole course, originally built in 1896 and redesigned in 2000. The 6,100-yard, par 70 course is seemingly at home against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. From Bob Hope to Jackie Gleason and Frank Sinatra to Dean Martin, many a famous face has taken to the legendary links.
Racquet swingers will be in heaven, too, with an award winning tennis facility that boasts ten perfectly groomed Har-Tru courts. And families needn’t worry about keeping the little ones happy - a 6,160 square foot complex offers games and entertainment like an outdoor playground, indoor arcade, toddler’s playroom and Camp Breakers , the year round kids club with counselor led arts and crafts, beach and lawn games, nature walks and swimming.
The Spa
After an $8 million renovation this fall, the Spa at the Breakers has upped its relaxation ante with 20,000 square feet of tranquil opulence. With an outdoor adult-only pool and jacuzzi and 17 well appointed treatment rooms, massages, body scrubs and facials center on the oceanfront location. Marine-based therapies are prominent throughout the spa menu – try the Deep Sea Signature Facial (80 minutes, $310) for the ultimate wind down.
The Dining
As one might expect, the chefs at The Breakers flex their culinary muscles with unmatched prowess. With eight inspired restaurant concepts, guests want for very little when it comes to fare and libations. HMF (named after Henry Morrison Flagler) serves up an ode to the classic Palm Beach cocktail culture, with a twist. Tapas style dishes are paired with handcrafted cocktails, all in a setting that echoes the glitz and glamour of a bygone era. Just a stone’s throw from HMF is The Circle , which offers a decadent breakfast menu unlike any other. Yet the spot is best known for its renowned Sunday brunch – where a buffet of fanciful proportions has become a true Palm Beach tradition with men clad in their sport coats and women in their most stylish sundresses. Perhaps the crowning jewel, however, is the room itself. An intricate hand painted ceiling wows guests just as much as the ocean views.
Flagler’s Steakhouse is arguably the area’s best, serving upscale cuisine in a decidedly “social club” type setting. From prime beef to fresh lobster, Flagler’s gets it right and then some, also offering an impressive wine list. Guests of the resort will also enjoy Echo for Asian fusion
and The Italian Restaurant which is, well, exactly that. Also check out The Seafood Bar – fresh fish and cocktails are abundant, as is an aquarium bar top that makes for sublime entertainment while you sip on your dirty martini.
The Shopping
While Palm Beach is indeed a mecca for any preppy princess (and her credit cards) one needn’t leave the resort’s confines for an exercise in retail therapy. The Shops at The Breakers, all housed within a perfectly landscaped courtyard, feature some of fashion’s most famous names as well as niche, curated collections of gifts and apparel. A Guerlain beauty boutique and dedicated Ralph Lauren store are must visits, as is Absolutely Suitable for swimwear (we picked up an adorable Trina Turk bikini). But the true shining star is the property’s Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store. An ode to the queen of pink and green, it’s Palm Beach perfection, even selling a version of the line’s popular Murfee scarf in a print exclusive to The Breakers.
WORTH AVENUE IS SYNONYMOUS with Palm Beach. Head to the iconic stretch where you’ll find well loved labels like Chanel and Cartier mixed in with local favorites. Pop into Maus & Hoffman for menswear that’s perfectly polished and don’t forget to stop at preppy staples Roberta Roller Rabbit and J. McLaughlin
The shopping continues along Dixie Highway at Palm Beach’s beloved Antique Row Cashmere Buffalo and Coco House are must visits. We love them for authentic antiques that celebrate Floridian style and all it stands for (think bamboo, rattan, lacquer and plenty of color).
Also check out Groovy Palm Beach Vintage (Iris Apfel’s go-to) for eclectic fashion and accessories. While in town, House of Lavande is another must for any jewelry lover. Tracy Smith’s vintage collections mixed with her own original designs will have you at hello.
All that shopping can require some serious R and R, so head to Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach and enjoy the property’s splendor and its impressive spa. Opt for the signature massage, which is infused with warm key lime and vanilla essential oils. Afterwards, grab a cocktail poolside as you listen to the crashing waves.
For foodies, options are plentiful. Bistro Chez Jean-Pierre dishes up a little bit of Paris in Palm Beach while Sprinkles may just serve the best ice
cream cone you’ve ever had. If you’re in the mood for something more relaxed than French fare, Pizza al Fresco doesn’t disappoint. Belle & Maxwell’s is another winner with a homey tea garden meets café feel and a Mediterranean inspired menu.
While in Palm Beach, it’s sacrilege not to take in a bit of the history for which the town is known. Adjacent to The Breakers is the Flagler Museum in all of its gilded age glory. It is most certainly one of the grandest private dwellings in the world with a story as alluring as its architecture.
Naturally, there’s plenty more to explore and discover in the Land of Lilly (yes, we admittedly made that term up). Follow our favorite bloggers, the girls of Palm Beach Lately. Their breezy island style and local know-how is hard to beat, as are complimentary rides around town on their banana leaf, pineapple and flamingo clad Preppy Mobile

VEGAS, BABY
It’s the 20th anniversary of the movie classic Casino, so Las Vegas has found yet another reason to throw a party. This one revolves around a two-hour tour of the locations where iconic scenes of the Robert De Niro movie took place. Rub elbows with former mobster Frank Cullotta as he uncovers the true stories behind the events that transpired the film. Cullotta, a former enforcer of Las Vegas’ ‘Hole in the Wall Gang’ as well as a Chicago Outfit enforcer, is the ultimate authority on Nevada desert misfeasance, having served as a technical consultant on the set of Martin Scorsese’s 1995 blockbuster. According to Casino writer Nicholas Pileggi, “There would have been no Casino movie, and probably not a good Casino book, without Frank Cullotta.” The tour also visits The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement before a bus ride around Sin City. This is right in the wheelhouse for history buffs and film aficionados. So take advantage of an afternoon with the Vegas mob before losing all of your money at the tables and clubs.

Who wants to hit the road along the California coast for a two-day motorcycle excursion with Keanu Reeves? That sounds kind of cool. Get the inside scoop from his roles in The Matrix, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, John Wick and Point Break when you’re not cruising along the Pacific in Reeves’ and Arch Motorcycle Company partner Gard Hollinger’s KRGT-1. Having been described as “the Zen of motorcycle design,” the two-wheeled temptress was initially featured in the 2015 Neiman Marcus Christmas Book, along with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to channel your inner “Easy Rider” with the Hollywood icon himself. While we can’t vouch for the hog itself until we get behind the gears, we can say that it sounds a hell of a lot more appealing than joining Reeves along the LA freeways on a speeding bus.

The restaurant serves six types of bacon. That’s right. Six. It’s a murderer’s row of habanero, garlic, candied, applewood, paleo and the chef’s selection, giving new meaning to the phrase “pig in slop.” The restaurant is Bacon Social House and the chef is Brian Crow. While the Denver bacon-centric eatery serving brunch, extended social hour and dinner has covered its bets with the pork angle, the menu also includes lighter fare and options for those less carnivorous types. Owner David Dill also tempts the palate from behind the bar with 12 taps of Colorado beer, spirits and artisanal cocktails that are sure to kickstart your morning. Whoever asked, “What’s in a name,” obviously didn’t come across one that had ‘bacon’ and ‘social’ in it.

GARBARINI
For some, fashion is a distant notion that exists only on runways and glossy pages. For others, it is life. Meet the others. Namely, Terri Garbarini and the seven stylists who have been dressing Colorado’s women for three decades. Situated in an expansive, airy space in the heart of bustling Cherry Creek North, her eponymous boutique is decidedly chic. But don’t take that to mean it’s avant garde or out of reach. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Garbarini has found its way into the hearts of Denver’s fashionable set as the destination for contemporary fashion. From boardrooms to ballrooms (and even classrooms) Garbarini is a space where women can find wearable looks reflective of the lives they live. And at the very of core it are the personal stylists who have collectively redefined the boutique experience.
Clad in a black Norma Kamali, Terri Garbarini looks over the 8,000 square feet she calls home. “I always say that I don’t have one store, I have seven,” she laughs. Yet the statement couldn’t be truer. There’s Timothy Rollins, who has been with the store some 17 years. His clients are the trendsetters. The ladies who aren’t afraid to take a risk when it comes to their wardrobes. And if they are, he pushes them to own it in the most stylish of manners. Then, there’s Lin Patten. Now going on her 20th year with Garbarini, Lin has built a clientele of women whose busy lives demand an eclectic and fashionable wardrobe. She leans towards the classics, mixing it up with edgy modern pieces and luxe fabrics and textures. On the other side of the spectrum is Miriam whose customers are girly and glam. They love all things colorful and sparkly – a definite digression from Timothy’s clients pushing the proverbial fashion envelope or Lin’s contemporary classics. Indeed, for every
“WE BELIEVE IN USING YOUR WARDROBE TO CONFIDENTLY EXPRESS WHO YOU ARE AS A WOMAN.”
stylist—Timothy, Lin, Miriam, Amy, Julie and Deb—there’s a store within a store.
Quite the opposite of the typical department store or online shopping experience, Garbarini is centered on personal relationships and customer service. Case in point? A woman who appears to be in her mid 40s scurries in the door. She’s frazzled, clearly on a mission. She spots Lin Patten and in an instant, a sense of calm overtakes her. Lin leads her to the dressing area where a rack has been pre-pulled filled with looks she knows the client will love, in her size and in silhouettes that complement her figure. As it turns out, the woman is leaving for a twoweek trip the next morning and hasn’t given packing a second thought. Two hours later, she leaves with every item she needs, feeling confident about her wardrobe. What would have taken days scouring crowded shopping malls for fashions seen on every other women in town took hours, all in the confines of a relaxed, comfortable space. This experience is what defines Garbarini.
“We’re a brand committed to making fashion enjoyable for every type of woman,” Patten explains. “We believe in using your wardrobe to confidently express who you are.” Indeed, Garbarini’s clients are women of both style and substance who invest in their wardrobes to uniquely reflect their personalities. As thirty-year veterans in Denver’s ever changing retail landscape, the store has cemented itself as the go-to for modern ladies who want a wardrobe that cannot be found on a mannequin in a luxury department store. Or for that manner, on their best friends.
“One of the greatest things about Garbarini is that we really get to know our customers. Whether it’s a dress for a special occasion or an everyday look for a luncheon, we make an effort to remember who has purchased what, who knows whom and who is going where. And we won’t sell the same look to two ladies who will undoubtedly find themselves at the same function.” This type of over-the-top service is a rarity, if not nonexistent, in the retail world.
What’s more, Terri Garbarini and her sophisticated stylists are knowledgeable, staying on the cusp of trends and designers. From well-known and well-loved brands like Vince, Theory and DVF to the niche labels you’ve never heard of like Gimos, Plein Sud and Ottotredici, the staff selects the best of the best from each collection. “We don’t believe in following fashion for fashion’s sake,” Terri Garbarini explains. “Sure, we stay up on the season’s trends, but that doesn’t mean we follow them blindly. We know and understand them, and then choose an interpretation that we love and that works for our clients.”
It’s a philosophy that has kept ladies from all walks of life coming back for thirty years and one that has earned Garbarini and her team their rightful place in the hearts (and closets) of the city’s most fashion forward women.

They say we cannot be all things to all people. While that may be true for most, Greg and Becky Boman would beg to differ. As the proprietors behind The Emporium, they’ve cultivated an eclectic marketplace that indeed offers a little something for everyone. From home décor to vintage jewels, furnishings to children’s gifts and artisanal foods to “mantiques,” the bustling destination in downtown Castle Rock boasts a curated collection of distinctive merchants.
“We offer a true gallery experience in a family-owned, approachable atmosphere,” Greg Boman explains. “We’ve designed our space to be a one-stop-shop where you can purchase truly unique items, dine and unwind away from the typical trappings of a mall or department store.”
True to his word, Boman has assembled a collection of 50 merchants, no two of which are the same and all of which have a story to tell. In fact, The Emporium is evocative not of an antique mall, but rather a European marketplace. Contemporary women’s fashions sit alongside rare vintage clothing, while fine handmade chandeliers and topof-the-line barbeque equipment is adjacent to fine art photography and upscale home accessories.
THE EMPORIUM
“WE’VE DESIGNED OUR SPACE TO BE A ONE-STOP-SHOP WHERE YOU
CAN PURCHASE TRULY UNIQUE ITEMS, DINE AND UNWIND AWAY FROM THE TYPICAL TRAPPINGS OF A MALL OR DEPARTMENT STORE.”
“The Emporium is the realization of a very unique vision. It is our goal to constantly curate a diverse mix of merchants, all of whom retail wares with an authentic story behind them,” Boman attests.
The space also plays host to the newly launched Best Buddies Bakery and Café. Managed by Wellspring Community, Best Buddies provides an outlet and support to adults with special needs. Participants in the program spend their time baking for and working at the café in order to achieve a level of inclusiveness and independence they would not otherwise attain.
What’s more, The Emporium’s bustling location in the heart of charming Castle Rock not only gives it a sense of community and nostalgia, but also makes it the ideal space for celebrations and special events. Boman and his merchants frequently host outdoor
concerts, movies al fresco, men’s nights and ladies-only shopping nights.
“We want our customers to enjoy themselves and feel like they are part of something special,” Boman continues. “Whether they are attending one of our many events or simply stopping in to pick up a gift for a loved one, we aim to provide an environment that is personal, friendly and out of the ordinary. Much like the wares we sell, The Emporium’s philosophy is rooted in individuality. It’s about creating a memorable experience.”

It’s My Party
FRIENDSHIPS AMONGST LITTLE GIRLS
are some of the sweetest to watch, and Milana’s preschool gal pals were no exception. To celebrate the bond between her daughter and her darling girlfriends, Milana’s mom Jennifer decided to host an intimate fifth birthday fête with the dreamiest of themes—a fairy garden party. What’s more, the late spring date also served as the perfect way to bid adieu to the school year.
Inspired by the birthday girl’s love of dressing up and playing make believe, the soirée was just the right sentiment for Milana. To set a festive mood, each pint-sized partygoer was given a fairy costume and wings to don for the afternoon and later take home as her party favor. Milana’s mother Jennifer also went the extra mile by hand making floral crowns and pink
fairy dust, pairing them with sparkly wands as the ideal finishing touch.
Instead of traditional party games, the girls were each given supplies (along with giant paper mache flowers) to create their very own fairy gardens. Afterward, they continued the fun outdoors with an adorable butterfly piñata before frolicking about in their endearing attire.
Throughout the day, the girls indulged in the sweetest of treats—a pink ombre “naked” cake, butterfly cupcakes and fairy wand and “M” monogrammed cookies—all of which were baked with love by Rosie Cakes—a personal friend of the birthday girl and her mother.

MONICA & JOHN
{ FEBRUARY 28, 2015 } Colorado Springs, Colorado
BY BETSY MARR
PHOTOS BY CHAD CHISHOLM AND KELLIE COUGHLIN
SOME LOVE STORIES are written in the stars. For Monica and John, theirs was a love written in the stars and stripes alike. Hailing from two of Colorado’s most beloved political families, Monica, the daughter of former Governor and First Lady Bill and Frances Owens and John, son of former Congressmen and Gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez and his wife, Claudia, seemed like a fit from moment one. And while yes, their respective GOP families had known each other for many years, Monica and John never crossed paths. Until, that is, they were “serendipitously” seated beside one another at a fundraising dinner in 2013. Unbeknownst to the pair, John’s mother Claudia had arranged their proximity, hoping that the two would connect. Much to her delight, connect they did. Fast-forward a year and a surprise proposal was in the works. Knowing that his beloved had a penchant for patriotism (along with
red, white and blue Lilly Pulitzer dresses), John began planning an Independence Day proposal, asking both Monica’s father and brother for her hand in marriage. By the time Fourth of July rolled around, everyone knew about the proposal. Monica’s family. John’s family. Even Bob’s campaign manager and Monica’s best friend. Everyone knew, but Monica. On the big day, Monica wanted to do what every political junkie feels the need to do on the fourth - participate in a parade. Monica and John met the Beauprez Team and walked in the Park Hill parade. Afterwards, they headed to the St. Julien Hotel in Boulder, one of their favorite places. From their gorgeous suite overlooking Folsom Field, John dropped to one knee during the fireworks display and asked Monica to be his wife.
The following February, Monica and John said their “I dos.” With the Beauprez family spanning six generations of natives and the couple’s fathers serving Colorado in elective office for a combined twenty-eight years, showcasing their Colorado roots was of the utmost importance. As such, Monica and John chose the legendary Broadmoor in Colorado Springs for their reception and St. Mary’s, a stunning Catholic cathedral, for their ceremony. More than 220 guests watched the gorgeous bride walk down the aisle with her father in a gown by Casablanca, which was complemented with a white fur cape handmade by her mother, Frances – just the right touch for the pair’s snowy nuptials. Monica’s five bridesmaids wore blush colored dresses that perfectly set the tone for the winter fairytale. As she made her way down the aisle, the bride held her bouquet closely, which was intertwined with her “something old” – the pink rosary she was given at her baptism. Following tradition, Monica also had her “something blue” near and dear. Tucked inside her wedding dress and tied with a blue ribbon was John’s mother’s pearl pin. Claudia inherited the pin from her grandmother, Caroline Johnson, and it has been worn by the family’s brides since 1890.
During the reception, guests dined on fare that was inspired by the couple’s families – Italian cuisine was served to honor Monica’s maternal heritage. In lieu of a traditional cake, Monica and John served iced Snickerdoodle cookies monogrammed with a "B" (for Beauprez and The Broadmoor). The recipe used was Frances Owens’ from Evans Junior High in Texas. Guests danced the evening away, after which the couple embarked on their honeymoon in Barbados before returning home to their beloved Colorado.

CREATING A SPACE THAT FEELS NATURAL in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain landscape that also appears current and contemporary can be challenging for any designer. Yet for Vail’s Melissa Greenauer, the process was one that resulted in rustic elegance at its very finest. “When we began, the home really didn’t have a cohesive design. There was no real flow from the architecture to the interior layout of spaces,” she explains. “What’s more, the finishes were dated and not in keeping with the client’s lifestyle or tastes at all.” With this in mind, Greenauer and her team set out to completely renovate the Beaver Creek home where the client and their family (who hail from the east coast) could comfortably spend holidays and ski vacations.
As a well-traveled designer with a global clientele, Greenauer’s eye for design and understanding of architecture is perhaps unmatched in Colorado’s high country, her portfolio boasting projects in the likes of London and Dubai. Yet because the Vail Valley is her home and backyard, the designer’s innate grasp of the organic, raw appeal that mountain abodes evoke was instrumental to this top to bottom renovation.
With Greenauer leading the charge, the home was reimagined with a decidedly mountain modern aesthetic that was casual and livable, while remaining stylish and trend right. The entire home was opened up to create a free flowing floor plan that maximized natural light. “Everything we did revolved around comfortable living – nothing was formal. We wanted to achieve a relaxed elegance.” To do so, barn wood was utilized for wall paneling in a way that brought warmth and a textural element to the spaces. “The barn wood truly brought a rustic appeal to the home and was the right juxtaposition against the crisp, striking architecture.” Indeed, it was a design element that turned once blank walls into cozy statement pieces.
Furnishings and accessories that would speak to the homeowner’s modern aesthetic without feeling unnatural in the mountain landscape were thoughtfully selected. Clean lines were carefully blended with warm textures and finishes that evoked a timeless sense of style, while bold fabrics served as the ideal complement to an otherwise neutral palette. ➺

Q + A
What made you fall in love with your spouse?
She: No question, his kindness. After that, his sense of humor. And after that, we have lots of old-fashioned chemistry!
He:The girl in the sparkly dress up on stage is pretty spectacular. But I fell in love with the woman off stage who opens her heart to every person we meet, from CEOs to the guy driving the shuttle bus at the airport.
What makes you stay in love with your spouse?
She: He’s affectionate, has the utmost integrity, is deeply romantic and he makes me laugh every single day. And he’s HOT.
He: I’ve never known anyone who more fully lives her ideals every single day.
How do you strike the work life/love life balance?
He: Because we both own our companies, it makes it easier to adjust our schedules to accommodate one another. We always make sure we go on a romantic date at least once a week.
She: A lot of those dinners end up being business problem-solving sessions. That may not seem terribly romantic, but knowing someone always has your back is pretty damn sexy.
Best marriage advice you’ve ever gotten?
She: Marry someone who makes you laugh. He: Never, ever take her for granted.
Best marriage advice you have to give?
She: Wake up each day and figure out something you can do to make the other person happy.
He: Ben Affleck got into trouble for saying marriage is work. But the fact of the matter is that when your relationship was new you put all kinds of thought and effort into it. Where should we go for dinner? What should I wear?
Should I kiss her? That kind of work isn’t just fun, it’s thrilling. Why would you stop doing that?

Go-to date night in Denver?
Our first date was at Duo, so we both still have a soft spot for it.
Romantic Colorado getaway?
Anywhere we happen to go, we make it romantic. Trust us.
Your best trip ever?
She: Early in our relationship, Dan took me to New York’s Carlyle Hotel, because I told him I wanted to hear Woody Allen play clarinet. It was one of the most memorable nights of my life. He: By the end of the night, she’d gotten to be such good pals with the bartender that he snuck us out through the back door so we could get our picture taken with Woody when he left the stage.
She: Lannie Garrett is a longtime Denver entertainer who has wowed audiences for more than three decades. Ten years ago, she teamed up with actor Jefferson Arca to open Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, where she not only performs but also books and markets the club’s eclectic mix of local and national acts.
He: Daniel Brogan is the president and editor-in-chief of Denver’s 5280 Magazine, which he founded from his second bedroom in 1993. Prior to 5280, he was a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Tribune and a contributor to a variety of local and national publications, including Time, Macworld, and Rolling Stone
They: First got to know each other when they were on the board of Project Angel Heart. When the club opened, Dan reached out about 5280 sponsoring Lannie’s shows. They met at his office and he asked her out the same day.
The Carlyle Duo
+ A
What made you fall in love with your spouse?
He: Initially I was attracted to her upbeat, flexible personality along with her intellect and looks. I admire her drive and love for those around her.
She: He was so tall, smart and handsome as well as a really great guy. It was a perfect combo.
What makes you stay in love with your spouse?
He: Our continued commitment to each other and shared life goals. She always keeps things interesting and exciting.
She: He puts our family first all the time. He has been a present and wonderful father to our three children and he gives me the freedom to be myself. I also genuinely love hanging out with him. We are best friends.
How do you strike the work life/love life balance?
He: I try to keep work and home life separate. It takes a lot of coordination regarding schedules and is a little like a Broncos huddle - we talk about the play, know our assignments and go out and execute.
She: Compartmentalizing allows me to be “all in” personally and professionally. As a divorce attorney I can have very demanding days. When I'm working I'm concentrating on taking care of my clients. When I'm at home I'm concentrating on taking care of my husband and family.
Best marriage advice you’ve ever gotten?
He: Communication, patience, forgiveness and fun are keys to a long and happy marriage.
She: My mother used to tell me that “marriages are made in heaven but they have to survive on earth.”
Best marriage advice you have to give?
He: Go on a marriage “planning retreat” every year. Talk about your future. Then, create a game plan that you can both follow.
She: Surround yourselves with other couples that value marriage and family. Having friends with the same goals allows us to encourage each other through the tough times.
April +Darryl Jones

Seeing the inner workings of unsuccessful marriages daily, she’s acutely aware of what it takes to go the distance. With a heart as impressive as her career she is active in organizations like Kempe and Colorado Ballet Guild. All on top of six different Bar memberships and an appointment to the Colorado Supreme Court.
He: Being a Berkeley grad is impressive in its own right. Mix that with a Masters degree from MIT and you have Darryl Jones, city planner and developer extraordinaire. He’s been behind some of the most notable mixed use and urban redevelopment projects on both coasts and to top it off, sits on the Greenwood Village City Council.
They: Met on New Year’s Eve nearly three decades ago. Today, April and Darryl Jones have three successful, accomplished children who are following in their parent’s powerful footsteps.

Depart from the trappings of the typical first date by doing things your own way. There won’t be any awkward moments staring across a dinner table when you get crafty together at Upstairs Circus. You’ll meet up for an afternoon project-making session, sip on a signature cocktail (His: Vintage Circus, Hers: Pink Elephant) and create something beautiful together. He might stamp out a pair of custom leather travel tags or a monogrammed leather hip flask, she might design a custom collar for her pup or a hex nut bracelet. Next, hit Sarto’s restaurant, Jefferson Park's shining star. Reserve a seat at the bar, where glimpses of the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen give you plenty to talk about. Chat with the chef about the types of food you want to sample, and he'll construct a custom selection of up to eight courses of Cicchitti—typical small bites served in Venice— paired with something from their (mostly) Italian wine list. Since things are going swimmingly, get a nightcap of sorts when you visit Laws Whiskey House. Tour the distillery and top off the night with a few samples of their A.D. Laws Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey. This could be the beginning of something beautiful...
Our Advice
"Don’t
just go for dinner or coffee because it's what people do. Those venues can be difficult because it forces constant conversation. Instead, do something you’ll actually enjoy that helps the date go smoothly.”
Food and love are inextricably linked: Playwright George Bernard Shaw famously said “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” Food lovers date like no one else—they’ll skip the sporting events and the movies to go to a hot new restaurant, a wine tasting or a five-course progressive dinner. Your ultimate date would look like this. Start the evening on the Taste of LoDo tour with Local Table Tours, a food-tasting tour company started by Colorado food blogger Meghan Bucholz. Your tour stops, crawl-style, at various well-known restaurants throughout the area, including favorites like Mercantile in Union Station and The Squeaky Bean. The selection of restaurants changes for each tour, so the restaurants are a surprise. Next, head down Market Street to Cook Street School and take their Culinary Date Night class, designed especially for couples that want to turn up the heat. You’ll prepare seasonally-geared menus, accompanied by complimentary wines. Finally, stroll down Larimer Square (enjoy the window shopping on this historic Denver block) and stop at Cru for a nightcap. Their wine flights give you the opportunity to taste a flight of different styles—we think Everyone Loves Bubbles or Sexy Reds might set the right tone for the rest of the evening.
Our Advice
"Try to avoid doing too much ‘research' on someone and try to get to know them little by little. Half the fun of going out is getting to know someone new, so allow that to happen naturally.”

// Rekindling the Romance 03
Sometimes it feels like the spark has dwindled to an ember, and you need to fan the flames to breathe new life into your old love. There’s nothing like a weekend retreat to the ultra-romantic Devil’s Thumb Ranch, where you can stay in the secluded Willow Cabin. Its romantic Scandinavian décor sets the tone for the weekend—beautiful meadow views, a warm fire, a claw-footed tub and a sleeping loft take you away from it all. After brunch at Heck’s Tavern in the stunning hexagonal dining space, head to your couples massage, where a dual rubdown will refresh you for a weekend together. Devil’s Thumb is all about rustic romance, and after a horseback ride or an afternoon ice-skating, soak away your troubles in the resort’s geothermic pool. Cozy up to a romantic steak dinner for two at John L’s Wine Cellar (a superintimate dining experience) or the Ranch House (they’re known for the Wagyu beef from their own herd) and spend the evening reconnecting. The next day, explore the ranch on a scenic stroll, then hit nearby Winter Park for a few hours of shopping in their charming boutiques and galleries. Be sure to hit up Vasquez Creek Inn and stop into Volario’s for Northern Italian cuisine that will warm your heart. When you head home, hand in hand, the passion will be back.
Our Advice
“Regardless
of how chaotic life gets, take five minutes to cuddle and kiss in the morning and at night. This kind of affection can do wonders for romance and intimacy.”

”
Our Advice
"The 75th date is just as important as the first. Never, ever stop dating your spouse. Take the time to plan evenings out and never take one another for granted.”
The Penrose Room at the Broadmoor Hotel hearkens back to a time when gents wore dinner jackets and bejeweled ladies in elegant dresses went up to dinner to mark a special occasion. This hasn’t changed much since the ubiquitous Broadmoor restaurant first opened its doors in 1961—and in fact, The Penrose Room is the only place in Colorado that’s been awarded five stars and five diamonds for more than 50 years running. Your anniversary weekend can begin with champagne on ice delivered to your room—a celebration of everything you’ve been and what’s to come. Then, after spending the day relaxing poolside and treating yourselves to a couples’ massage, you’ll get dressed to the nines to enjoy a bespoke dinner under the oversized crystal chandelier at the Penrose Room. Atop the South tower, overlooking the grand resort, you’ll dine on seasonal Continental cuisine, sip perfectly paired wines handselected by the sommelier, and be attended with white glove service, paving the way to an evening of dancing (accompanied by a mellow jazz trio)—the perfect way to celebrate an anniversary weekend. Before you leave the Penrose, surprise her by blindfolding her and leading her to the Broadmoor Jewelry Company. It’s after-hours—the lights are off when you arrive, but you’ve made special arrangements for a spectacular surprise. She has no idea what to expect as you’re ushered in, and when the lights go up, there’s bubbly on ice, and on the counter a selection of hand-picked diamond necklaces so she can pick her favorite. The next day, enjoy a round of golf on the resort’s awardwinning green, or take a sleigh ride through the mountains to end the perfect anniversary weekend.
// The Adventurous Date
He had to get to know you, so he asked you on a date. Not an ordinary date, but one that was unforgettable—he took you up in his de Havilland, and you’ve never looked back. Soaring above the clouds, you sensed this was the beginning of a grand adventure. Now, you experience it all together, and you’re as hooked on each other as you are in pursuing a thrill. Your next ultimate date? Heli-skiing for two, followed by an unforgettably romantic dinner. From Vail, you’ll jet to Telluride with Helitrax on a private fixed-wing charter that gets you there in 40 minutes of scenic flying. Once in Telluride, you’ll board a helicopter for a full day of heli-skiing on 200 square miles in the San Juans. Your return flight gets you back to Vail in time for dinner. Atop the slopes of Beaver Creek lies a luxurious chalet nestled in the White River National Forest in a meadow that was once part of a pioneer settlement—Beano’s Cabin. Only accessible by an open-air sleigh pulled by a Snow-CAT, you’ll arrive and warm up next to a blazing fire in the stone fireplace. Under antler chandeliers, you’ll enjoy a 5-course dinner of Colorado’s flavors, including game grilled over an open fire.
”Our Advice
“It’s healthy to get out of your comfort zone as a couple. Pushing your boundaries allows you to get to know another side of one another. Whether it’s traveling abroad or running a marathon, changing up the scenario is key.”
Surprise your fiancée-to-be with a treasure hunt that ends in a proposal. A hand-written note at home will lead her on a tour of your favorite spots around town, taking her first steps on a journey that will last a lifetime. As she walks out of her front door, a driver awaits in a vintage Rolls Royce, ready to squire her around town as she follows the clues. Inside the car? A bottle of Dom and a playlist of the tunes you’ve fallen in love to.
The driver ferries her to Aviano, the Cherry Creek coffee shop where you had your first date. Her bestie is there, with an envelope containing the next clue, and the Rolls whisks her away to Civic Center Park— where you met for your lunch breaks and sampled Denver’s best food trucks. A lone food cart is there— Peteybird Ice Cream—and the next clue comes with a sweet ice cream sandwich. The Cruise Room is the next spot, where you drank your first martini together, bathed in rosy light and swathed in Art Deco splendor. The bartender shakes up a cocktail and slips her the next clue: A room at the Crawford, where a stunning little black dress is draped on the bed with instructions to meet at your final destination. Only you know that after she accepts, you’re headed to dinner at Fruition, where your friends and family are waiting to celebrate.
You’ll end at one of Denver’s notable landmarks: The Daniels and Fisher Clock Tower, where she’ll climb the spiral staircase to find you at the top, behind the face of the clock. When you get down on one knee with that little blue box, this room--with clocks on all sides--is the perfect place to propose to the one you want to go through time with.

Excelsior’s Triumphant Faces Gala Kickoff
Excelsior kicked off their 2016 Triumphant Faces Gala with more than 150 guests in speakeasy style. Guests were greeted with a 1920’s themed photo op next to a Ford Model ‘A’ before strolling up the red carpet to the Nocturne entrance. In true speakeasy fashion, their invitations had warned “No password, No Party,” so before being admitted they had to whisper ‘Empower’ to the doorman. Gala Co-Chairs Tina Lovelace and Ashley Prust announced the 2016 theme – “Speakeasy Soirée” – as they unveiled Excelsior’s 2016 Triumphant Woman - six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken Rouen.

May you always step out hand in hand in the grandest of style.
May you dance in the rain, frolic on the sand and savor the views.
May you revel in the romance of a snowy night and crackling fire.
May you face life’s storms together, by sharing one umbrella. And may yours be a love that lasts a lifetime.
