DO WHAT YOU CAN, with what you have, where you are.” Those were the words of the late President Theodore Roosevelt. To be honest, until recently, I thought I made that quote up. I’ve lived by it for so long, in every sense, that at one point or another I began to believe it had originated from someplace within. It clearly didn’t and I thank the wise friend who made me aware of such. You have saved me a very public lesson in hubris.
But that lapse in humility aside, I still find those words to be my driving force, regardless of where they came from. To me, they represent making the most of life and everything it encompasses. They represent having pride in all you do. They represent finding a way, despite the odds. They represent making every minute count and leveraging every resource you have to do so. They represent never waiting for the perfect moment and instead, seizing the day. Ultimately, they represent the past three years of Reign Magazine
In this, our third anniversary issue, we celebrate the home. And I couldn’t think of a more appropriate topic to mark such an occasion. Home is not only a place but also a state of mind.
In Design Darlings (page 97) we peek inside the homes of Denver’s designing women. These three ladies represent those whose style sensibilities we so greatly admire. Of course, to profile each and every Colorado decorator whose tastes we adore would fill every one of our glossy pages, but the work of Ramey, Beth and Andrea truly does have us agog.
In our Style Icon feature (page 40), we sit down with one of our favorite celebrity designers, the irreverent and irrepressible Kathryn Ireland. Her candor, wit and whimsy quite literally had us at hello. And in Indian Summer (page 70) the design stars continued to shine upon us. What a thrill it was to meet India Hicks, one of the world’s most indelible tastemakers. From her aristocratic British upbringing (imagine the memories she must have as one of Princess Diana’s bridesmaids) to her time as one of fashion's best known models, to her role as designer, entrepreneur and mother of five, we peek inside India’s life well lived.
Of course, one most appreciates the notion of home after she’s been away and our adventures in Los Cabos, Mexico for La Vida Bonita (page 58) were no exception. We traveled south of the border to capture some of our favorite fashion images yet at the gorgeous home of Denver-based Cuvée Escapes.
Yet the adage is true, there’s no place like home – particularly the home of Chef Linda Hampsten Fox who so graciously opened her doors and her heart for our Affair with Flair Learn more about this dream soirée to benefit Excelsior Youth Center on page 110.
As we raise our glasses to another year in publishing, despite seemingly insurmountable odds and with perhaps the world’s smallest albeit mightiest team, we’re grateful and humbled to be home, doing what we can, with what we have, where we are.
We hope you’ll visit us time and again.
Yours in style,
Betsy Marr

NO REST FOR THE WICKED. This issue has everything. A photo shoot in Cabo (page 58) A tour of beach clubs across the country (page 90). We even traveled from Deer Valley to Moab for an epic adventure (page 47). All in time for the heat of summer, marking yet another year at the halfway point. So I must have nothing left in the tank, right? Au contraire. Coming this fall, Reign will welcome a little brother to the fray in the form of the men’s platform, Sir and Sport. This has been a long time in the making. Betsy actually got in my ear a few years back about it and I immediately dismissed it, primarily because I wanted to concentrate on establishing Reign. Now, the thought of adding some more testosterone to the equation feels right. Imagine being thrown into the deep end of a female-centric business after a career in sports television and corporate sales. If it weren’t for ESPN, countless movie channels and the great outdoors to balance out my time with Tory Burch, Trina Turk and Lilly Pulitzer, I may not have survived. Now, I’ve been blessed with a blank canvas to call my own and supply a new voice and spin on all things sports, movies, music, cars, men’s fashion, travel, home and anything else that caters to male-centric interests and pastimes. The reality is that if we didn’t have the support over the last four years from our readers, subscribers, partners and advertisers then expansion would never have been an option. You have no idea how appreciative we are and how privileged we feel to have garnered your approval. Sir and Sport will flirt with your funny bone, tantalize your sense of adventure and transport you down memory lane with original content, interviews and a design all its own.
So thank you in advance for your support. I won’t let you down. Now it’s time for me to write an entire magazine (hell, Betsy did it).
Best,

Sisterly Love
Utterly chic and unabashedly preppy, design legend Sister Parish has long been lauded as the mother of American Country style. A lover of the classic stripe, chintz and hits of bold color, she had the distinct talent of crafting spaces that were both elegant and lived in. As the chosen designer to work with Jackie Kennedy on her legendary White House revamp, Sister Parish showed America, and the world, how to design graceful, timeless rooms.
Now, One Kings Lane has captured her classic style by reimagining well-loved Sister Parish fabrics into beautiful upholstered pieces. This is one collab we are thrilled about. Think winters in Palm Beach and summers in the Hamptons. Fresh yet totally all-American colors like raspberry, gray and navy keep the whimsical prints usable, modern and surprisingly easy to incorporate into almost any space or style. We love the way the graceful curved back of a sofa meets with a striking bold pattern or how a sleek slipper chair can introduce a soft nod into a masculine bedroom. Now through August, One Kings Lane devotees can bring home a piece of Americana. Word to the wise – nab that settee while you can, for one can only assume that Sister Parish style sans the associated price tags will fly off the virtual shelves.

What a Dish
Obsession is an understatement when it comes to the line of Lettuce Ware that famed ceramicist Dodie Thayer has rolled out for Tory Burch. So fabulous, so retro...we can’t get enough. Known as the doyenne of ceramics, Dodie Thayer’s wares are whimsical, glamorous and elegant yet approachable and totally preppy. In the 1960s Thayer was a self-taught artist who learned to mold pottery by pressing it into cabbage leaves. Soon, her Lettuce Ware became a signature of taste and wealth in Palm Beach. The Duchess of Windsor, Bunny Mellon and C.Z. Guest amassed huge collections. These days Lettuce Ware fetches incredible prices at auction.
This new (and far more accessible) collection features hand detailed serving pieces, plates, bowls, cups and saucers and scented candles as well as fabulous ginkgo patterned table linens. Burch chose a slightly more vibrant green for the collection, making these pieces right at home on a modern table. Plus the springy hue makes the perfect backdrop for food, instantly jazzing up chicken salad or a bowl of spicy gazpacho on the patio. Did we mention that the delicate cup and saucer is just about the cutest thing we have ever seen? Thank you Tory for bringing a bit of 60’s Palm Beach glamour into our china cabinet.

REESE’S PIECES
Our love for Reese Witherspoon runs as deep as her southern roots, and the actress’ entrée in the world of retail is no exception. Draper James is her brand new collection of apparel, gifts and accessories that has us all aflutter. Brimming with the girlish charm for which Witherspoon herself is known, James’ wares are polished, pert and perfectly posh. According to the starlet, the brand is entirely inspired by her grandparents - Dorthea Draper and William James Witherspoon. “My grandparents taught me everything I know about gracious Southern living. From them I learned to dress and act like a lady, to take pride in my home, to reach out to help a neighbor and to always invite everyone in for a visit,” the actress explains on draperjames.com. Naturally, the collection follows suit – think A-line sheaths in ladylike patterns paired with statement making pearl stud earrings and hostess gifts that would delight even the most discerning southern belle. We’re smitten as a kitten with the “Totes Y’All” tote and the “Put your Face On” cosmetic case and can’t get enough of the magnolia print cigarette pant. Proof positive that Draper James is one of the actress’ most celebrated roles yet.

Answer the Bell
In a world of countless lifestyle blogs, cooking shows and foodies posting their latest jawdropping feast on Instagram, we spend hours just getting inspired to cook. But suddenly, it’s 7 o’clock and you haven’t actually made a single thing. In comes Supper Bell to save the meal. From an ever-changing menu based on what is fresh and in season, you select the meal that makes your tastebuds sing. SupperBell’s chefs prepare it for you, flash freeze it and deliver it right to your door... that night! All you have to do is follow the simple “finishing directions” and your dinner is done.
Trust us, this food is anything but average. With options like Steak & Frites with Roasted Radishes & Beets or Vegetarian Rice Noodle Salad, there is something for every taste bud – even wee ones with the likes of kid-friendly Mac & Cheese. Supperbell Chef Ace Speidel, or as we like to call him “our new personal chef,” has worked at such foodie delights as The Kitchen and TAG. He is a stickler for freshness and flavor and a supporter of local whenever possible. And the eco-friendly packaging rounds out the deal and makes us feel like we are doing our part. As Supperbell’s website attests, “You eat, you love, we fist bump.” It’s as simple as that.

SEEING STRIPES
It’s summer, which means we are on the hunt for easy-breezy, throw on and go dresses, crisp tunics and sleepwear that doesn’t leave our houseguests blushing. One look at Duffield Lane’s preppy-chic homepage has us longing for summer dinner dates, afternoons at the farmer’s market and leisurely walks for pistachio ice cream.
The idea behind Duffield Lane is simple; fresh silhouettes done in poppy colors and stylish prints that look pulled together but are insanely practical and comfortable. Prices range from $28-$142 so you can really freshen up your wardrobe. And the beauty of these pieces is how easily they blend in with your summer staples. Pair the Grace Dress in navy with your nude wedges for an effortless night out, or toss on the Polly Pullover with some white shorts to run the kids to swimming lessons. These are pieces that are classic yet totally on trend—stripes, preppy colors, bright coral, crisp white. Classics are classic for a reason, which means if Lilly herself could have worn it, you should too.

ONCE AGAIN, SUMMER BELONGS TO LARIMER SQUARE. DENVER’S MOST CHARMING CITY BLOCK BRINGS BACK SOME OF OUR FAVORITE EVENTS INCLUDING DINING AL FRESCO AND LE JARDIN SECRET, THEIR FABULOUS FARMER’S MARKET.
Mark your calendars for July 11th and August 15th when a few of Denver’s hottest restaurants spill out onto the Square and set up tables right in the street. Dine on yummy summer fare under the stars from restaurants like Osteria Marco, The Capital Grille and Tamayo. Or grab an espresso from The Market and feel like you are relaxing on a gorgeous Italian piazza. It’s guaranteed to be an experience unlike anything in Colorado. Saturdays, June 6th through September 26th, check out Le Jardin Secret. This is not your run of the mill farmer’s market—it’s so much better. Grab an iced coffee or cool lemonade and spend a morning browsing. On the hunt for juicy, ripe tomatoes for Caprese salad or a baguette and a knob of gooey artisan Brie? They have it all. Plus, Larimer Square has enlisted top local chefs to create recipes for the at-home cook (trust us, you really can make them on your own!). Collect the recipes throughout the summer and seriously impress your dinner guests.
It’s My Party
WE NEVER QUITE REALIZE THE
impression we have on our little ones until the most telling of moments. For mom and event planner extraordinaire Ashley Summers, that moment came rather unexpectedly. “My daughter Storey always watches in awe as my husband and I dress up for date nights, fundraisers and events,” she explains. “One evening, she saw me putting on a gown and begged to join us for a cocktail party.” While that particular soirée was not apropos for a wee one, it did inspire the theme for Storey’s fourth birthday extravaganza – a mocktail party!
“Pour on the Fun” was the driving force behind the whimsical fête that saw Storey and her friends take over one of downtown’s swankiest event spaces on a Saturday evening in January. The tiny guests arrived in “mocktail” attire and were greeted
by an ombred donut wall and “bar” boasting the likes of Shirley Temples, Root Beer Floats and Sparkling Sangria. When it was time to dine on kid-friendly fare and dreamy cakes, Storey and her friends’ artwork was celebrated in grand style. Earlier, they’d joined the birthday girl for a play date where they doodled the afternoon away. Little did they know that mom Ashley would then transfer their creations onto party décor including rugs and plates for Storey’s tablescape.
Afterwards, the entertainment was at an all time high with a balloon artist, face painter, bowtie bar and lipstick station adding to the fun.

BAILEY & PAUL June 21st
Basalt, Colorado
BY BETSY MARR
PHOTOS BY LAURA MURRAY
THEY SAY THAT WE LIVE IN A SMALL WORLD and no couple knows this adage to be truer than Bailey and Paul. After being introduced by a mutual friend (Bailey’s Wake Forest classmate and Paul’s co-worker), the couple, who both hail from Dallas, realized that they grew up a mere five minutes from one another and that their parents ran in the same social circles. A romance ensued and eventually Paul found himself planning a picture-perfect engagement. It was the day after Thanksgiving and Paul picked Bailey up from her parent’s home to make the drive to Paul’s family ranch where the couple would spend the weekend. Upon arriving at the sprawling Texas property – a place that had quickly become a favorite of Bailey’s – the scene appeared to be normal. The group took long walks, fished and played games much as they typically would. And so when Paul suggested that Bailey join him on a deer hunting expedition, she didn’t think twice. Yet she was taken by surprise and delight when, mid-hunt, Paul led her away from the trail towards a table beautifully set with flowers and a bottle of wine. It was there that he fell to one knee and asked Bailey to be his wife. After emphatically accepting his proposal, Paul had another surprise for his betrothed. Back at the ranch, Bailey’s entire brood had joined Paul’s for an engagement celebration. The groom-to-be had even ordered dinner from his fiancé’s favorite restaurant in the Lone Star State. When it came time to plan their nuptials, the couple knew almost immediately that the Roaring Fork Club outside of Aspen, Colorado was the perfect place to say their “I dos.” Both of their families had homes there and the location lent itself to Bailey and Paul’s rustic chic wedding vibe. Because they became engaged on Paul’s family ranch, an antler theme was woven throughout their big day – from a custom monogram to favors and even chandeliers. The couple enjoyed every picturesque moment – from their gorgeous ceremony with sweeping mountain views to their reception, where 218 friends and family celebrated under a stunning tent as the newlyweds reveled in love, laughter and happily ever after.

THE FLAMINGO
Rare, graceful and perfectly pink, the flamingo is a creature with which it’s easy to be enamored. Very social birds that live in colonies, flamingos are as charming as they are beautiful and their spirit is one that is full of capricious whimsy. In fact, a group of flamingos is referred to as a “flamboyance.” Proof positive that they are delightful in every sense. Today, the flamingo is celebrated in fashion, décor and accoutrement. Far from the questionable lawn ornaments of decades past, flamingos are taking the design world by storm.

SOME CALL HER IRREVERENT. Others say she’s inspiring and irrepressible. The fact of the matter is, all of the above are true – and then some. Meet Kathryn Ireland, the Million Dollar Decorator whose love of bright bold colors, pattern and texture has taken Hollywood – and the world – by stylish storm. Drew Barrymore, Steve Martin and Julia Louis Dreyfuss all call Ireland both friend and designer, but the British born and west coast dwelling woman is just as at home at her French Country farmhouse with one of the new friends who’s joined her on her annual design retreat as she is amongst the glittering lights of Los Angeles. From her eponymous textile line to her role as brand ambassador for AGA (the chicest kitchen appliances you’ll ever encounter), Kathryn Ireland is a tour de force. In a word, she’s fabulous. In a few more, she’s funny, unfiltered, brilliant and brimming with charm.
An Angeleno by way of the British Isles, Kathryn Ireland was born in England and raised in Scotland before making southern California her home in the mid 1980s. Apropos, really. Her style is sophisticated and tasteful, but her personality isn’t the least bit buttoned up. You may even call her a bit boho, as convention certainly doesn’t suit her. It’s no surprise, then, that Ireland’s former careers included acting, filmmaking and fashion design before making her mark on the world as a decorator. But “decorator” is only the beginning of a design dossier that is as variegated as the patterns and prints for which she’s known.
For starters there’s her bragging rights as a Bravolebrity. Ireland was the unpredictable style starlet on the network’s hugely successful Million Dollar Decorators The world watched as she designed famous abodes and frolicked in the desert with décor bestie Martyn Lawrence Bullard.
Then, there’s her textile and wallcovering collections. They’re cheery and fun but also quite chic and well made. Moreover, they’re a reflection of who Ireland is both as a person and as a designer. Candid, colorful and never holding back. “I cannot bear to walk into a house and know that the people are dull and boring before I’ve even met them,” she laughs. It’s this irreverent sense of humor and spot on style that has landed her deals with the likes of big name design houses and showrooms –think Scalamandre, Grange and C2 Paints.
Author is another of her favorite titles – Ireland’s five books dot the shelves and adorn the coffee tables of design lovers the world around. The most recent, Inspired By, is exactly that – tales from her friends and colleagues on what moves them and makes them whole. On what makes their houses homes and their spaces serene. But the pages themselves are equally inspired – think 1stdibs founder Michael Bruno’s bedroom and Lady Annabel Goldsmith’s English manor. Yet the homes aren’t those Ireland designed, but rather those she knows and loves. A bold move for a designer, but bold seems to be Ireland’s comfort zone.
“These really are houses that I love, that inspire me. I could happily live in each and every one of them,” she explains. “You have to remember that houses are there to be lived in. I always think that even if you have an off-white sofa, you should serve red wine. So what if someone spills some? The beauty of living is remembering when things like that happen.”

BOTTLE SERVICE
Leave it to the city of Chicago to alter our views on cocktails. We’ve never been a strong proponent of pre-made recipes in a bottle but Crafthouse Cocktails has proven to be an exception. The Chicago-based company founded by restaurateur and nightlife veteran Matt Lindner and James Beard award-winning and internationally known mixologist Charles Joly features versions of the Moscow Mule, a gin cocktail and a tequila cocktail, all of which will have you second guessing whether it was just made or from a bottle. Comprised of high quality ingredients and garnering the highest ever rating for a ready-to-drink beverage as designated by the Beverage Tasting Institute, these libations are beating the summer heat in style.

BIB + TUCKER
Bib & Tucker:
A phrase dating back to the mid1700s meaning one’s finest clothes. Dressed up, as in “the men were told to put on their best bib and tucker for the dinner dance.”
MARIO DI LEONE
In 1979, Mario Di Leone made a remarkable career change from an architect to an entrepreneur and owner of a high end men’s apparel store. His passion mani fested itself into outfitting some of the world’s most beautifully dressed from his store in Aspen. Featuring designers like Gianfranco Ferre and Brioni to Malo and Dolce & Gabbana, this renowned industry veteran shares his thoughts and inspirations on what looks make the man in our latest edition of Bib & Tucker.
BEST DRESSED CELEBRITY PAST?
Clark Gable. When I was a kid I remember watching his movies and he was always dressed impeccably. He carried the clothing very gracefully. One must feel comfortable in what he is wearing and the only way one can achieve that is by dressing nice every day. When you dress nice only occasionally it is like an amateur swimmer - his strokes are not graceful. When you dress well all the time, it becomes very natural and you don’t feel conscious about your outfits. Clark felt and looked good in his wardrobe at all times.
BEST DRESSED CELEBRITY PRESENT?
Tom Ford. I love the way he dresses. It’s very basic, his perfectly fit black suit, his open collar white shirt and his black shiny shoes that you can see your shadow in.
YOUR EARLIEST FASHION INSPIRATION?
My Mother. She was a fashion designer and a couturier and I would often help her with her work. I am also inspired by Gianfranco Ferre, the only master couturier who ever lived and Versace, the man who brought lots of fun to men’s clothing.
WHEN A MAN BUYS CLOTHING, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR HIM TO REMEMBER IS?
Luxurious Fabrics, Workmanship and Fit.
THREE FAVORITE DESIGNERS?
Gianfranco Ferre, Gianni Versace and Tom Ford. I also like Cortigiani and my own designs, which I produce in Italy.
FASHION SEASON OF CHOICE – SPRING OR FALL?
Fall/Winter is always more beautiful since you can layer things.
WHERE DO YOU SHOP FOR CLOTHES?
I buy Tom Ford and Levis 527. That’s it.
FAVORITE MAGAZINE?
Departures.
DO YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU’RE WEARING TOMORROW?
A white or blue crisp shirt, linen jacket, Cesare Paciotti shoes and Levis 527 jeans.
JEWELRY EVERY MAN SHOULD BE WEARING?
A luxury watch.
JEWELRY NO MAN SHOULD EVER WEAR? Earrings.
MANICURES AND PEDICURES FOR MEN? Absolutely.
THREE ITEMS EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE IN HIS CLOSET?
Black suit, black tie, black shoes.
TREND TO LOVE? TREND TO LEAVE?
The most luxurious jacket, the most luxurious shoes and the most luxurious shirt with blue jeans. But the overwhelming tattoos have to stop.
FIVE DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS?
Sidney Poitier, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and Gianfranco Ferre.
FAVORITE COLORADO RESTAURANT OR WATERING HOLE?

LOCALLY CURATED ART COLLECTIONS. FINE WINE SELECTIONS AND CRAFT SPIRITS. SWEEPING VIEWS. A MOUNTAIN ALL TO ONESELF. A TWOTIME OLYMPIC MEDALIST TO PERSONALLY GUIDE YOU DOWN THE SLOPES. THESE ARE THE NUANCES THAT MAKE A MONTAGE PROPERTY A MONTAGE PROPERTY. AND THE HOTEL COLLECTION’S FIRST FORAY OUTSIDE THE CONFINES OF CALIFORNIA WAS, IN A WORD, EXTRAORDINARY. MONTAGE DEER VALLEY OPENED ITS ALPINE-INSPIRED DOORS IN LATE 2010, IMMEDIATELY BECOMING PARK CITY’S TONIEST RESPITE. THE CRAFTSMAN STYLE LODGE’S COVETED LOCATION ATOP EMPIRE PASS MAKES FOR A TRUE ON-MOUNTAIN GETAWAY WHILE REMAINING MERE MINUTES FROM THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN. BUT THAT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

Stay
A cozier iteration of the Montage brand, the Deer Valley property plays perfectly into its surroundings. It’s opulent, but not overdone. Luxurious without being the least bit ostentatious. As repeat visitors have come to assume, the hotel’s staff is at your beck and call, eager to help in any way possible and always knowing not only your name but also your favorite cocktail and how you take your coffee. Reminiscent of the great lodges of the American west, Montage Deer Valley is every bit the warm, inviting respite you’d hope it to be, but don’t expect anything resembling the trite or cliché.
All 220 guest rooms are well appointed, with even the standard quarters being rather expansive (600 square feet on average) and all boasting spa-like bathrooms, fireplaces and sweeping mountain views. If your budget allows or your brood is in tow, opt for a suite where gourmet kitchens and wraparound balconies overlooking the mountain are the norm.

Unwind
Everything about Montage Deer Valley is a cut above, beginning with the luxer than luxe spa. At 35,000 square feet, Spa Montage is Utah’s largest, with its lodge-like décor set perfectly amongst the mountain’s perfect silhouette. An indoor lap pool and private sundeck are exclusive to spa guests, offering a quiet sanctuary from the busier resort pool. The typical spa trappings also abound – think whirlpool steam and sauna – yet in the most serene of settings. Treatments are all holistically focused, with the newly launched Elements of Wellness program being the menu’s shining star. Pre-visit, guests complete a comprehensive profile questionnaire and a series of treatments are then prescribed to meet fitness, health, relaxation and aesthetic goals. An ideal fit for the true spa enthusiast, think of it as a “sampling” of services where, based on an individual profile, one can choose (or simply follow the therapist’s recommendations) from a palette of options that includes three distinct categories: Indulge, Energize and Reconnect.
Dine
For foodies, options are plentiful, the newest of which is Burgers & Bourbon The chic but chill watering hole serves the classics - from gourmet burgers and fresh cut fries to hand spun shakes and craft spirits - or combine the two for an adult libation that’s sweet as can be. The menu pays homage to local artisans and farmers and the bar boasts over 100 bourbon selections. In the winter, it turns into the mountain’s Après ski hotspot. Of course, there’s also Daley’s Pub, an underground haven replete with its own bowling alley. Try the handcrafted brick over pizzas, and watch them bake in the pub’s own display oven.
More fanciful fare abounds upstairs at Apex Lounge, Montage’s fine dining restaurant and one that lives up to the hype. Relaxed yet equally refined, Apex serves inspired continental food with a seasonally fresh, farm to table menu. Opt for the pork belly to start before making your way to the risotto or Niman Ranch beef. The wine list impresses, with an expansive selection of varietals to complement Apex’s cuisine.
If you’re visiting during the winter months, Yama Sushi is also a must (the restaurant is open seasonally from December 20th on). Begin with the Japanese Wagyu Beef Hot Rock before enjoying one of the many signature sushi rolls.
Play
As one might expect, recreation is second to none on the mountain, regardless of the season. Hiking, biking, golfing and fly fishing are at your doorstep in the summer months, while Utah’s finest skiing is a private chairlift ride away in the winter. What’s more, the resort provides true ski-in ski-out access, complete with a ski concierge who has warmed boots ready for you as you depart and direct access to the spa for that après ski massage upon your return. But the real differentiator isn’t an amenity – it’s a celebrity. Two time Olympic medalist Shannon Bahrke is Montage’s Ski Ambassador, hosting guests on mountain runs and offering first hand lessons for those so inclined. Afterwards, unwind with Bahrke for gourmet s’mores around the fire pit – a time honored Montage tradition.
Weather permitting, the resort’s newest and most noteworthy adventure sport involves a private jet and one of America’s most stunning national parks – all in a day’s work. Montage to Moab is the property’s over-the-top iteration of exploration. The trip allows lucky guests to see the state’s top two attractions –Park City in Northern Utah and Moab in Southern Utah – all in a day trip, via private jet. Ski on one day and bike through red rock country the next.
If indoor sports are more your style, indulge in on-property retail therapy. From the standalone Roberto Coin boutique where the lauded Italian designer showcases his wares, to Pique, where old friends like Diane Von Furstenberg and Nanette Lepore are ready to greet you, the shopper's soul is certain to be soothed.
For Tiny Travelers
The adage is true – good things do come in small packages. Montage Deer Valley’s Paintbox is not your run-of-the-mill kid’s club, with customized programs for little ones from 5 to 12-years-old. Activities center on the resort’s deep connection with the arts and are largely creative – from painting to sculpting and more. Paintbox also takes full advantage of the surrounding mountains with outdoor activities geared towards your tiny traveler’s interest, age and skill level.
Around Town
No trip to Deer Valley is complete without a journey into downtown Park City. Montage’s Mercedes fleet will make the five-minute run down the mountain, dropping you off for a day of sightseeing and imbibing in grand style.
Hit up High West Distillery for locally crafted, small batch bourbon that’s both tasty and touristy. The joint stakes claim to some serious bragging rights, including the title of the world’s only ski-in distillery and saloon at an impressive 7,000 feet. The classic Manhattan can’t be beat. Our advice? Book ahead of time and take the Distillery Tour. High West’s traditional 250-gallon copper brewing pot is a sight to be seen. highwest.com
When in Park City, it’s sacrilege not to make a stop at The Egyptian Theatre. The home of all things Sundance, it’s worth the photo op alone. egyptiantheatrecompany.org
While the town is brimming with cool galleries and plenty of art, the best exhibits are not found inside, but rather on building facades and in alleyways. Park city plays accidental host to two Banksy pieces, painted in 2010 when the British graffiti artist was in town for the debut of his documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop at Sundance. banksy.co.uk
For the design lover, check out Root’d, the hip home décor boutique that boasts souvenirs fit for even the most tasteful travelers –from a curated collection of coffee table books, to luxury candles to textiles and one-of-a-kind furnishings. The shop will ship worldwide, so no need to hold back. rootdhome.com
For fashionistas, options abound but the most noteworthy is Panache. The aptly name shop retails wares from some of our favorite designers and is sure to uncover a gem or two. Nestled right on Main Street, Panache plays Park City hostess to the likes of Brunello Cucinelli, Current Elliott, Joie, Trina Turk and Theory. Really, the gang’s all there. While in town, check out the hip Washington Schoolhouse. The boutique hotel is a favorite amongst design lovers and the glitterati for good reason. It’s an iconic historic landmark whose 1889 structure was perfectly preserved and transformed into hospitality bliss a few years back. European antiques sit alongside modern art in a space that epitomizes mountain swank. Go for a drink or go for the weekend. Either way, you won’t lose. washingtonschoolhouse.com

hen a company has a legacy that spans more than five decades, one can only assume that there is something very special about the way they do business. Such is the case with Materials Marketing, the nation’s finest architectural stone and tile firm and one of the most stunning showrooms in Denver’s expansive Design Center.
As America’s oldest, largest and only fully integrated manufacturer of hand-carved architectural and dimensional stone, Materials Marketing has helped homeowners, architects, designers and builders to bring thousands of beautiful homes and spaces to fruition. The firm, which sources Marble, Travertine and Limestone in block form, owns and operates its own impressive quarries in Mexico and the United States in addition to sourcing from Europe’s finest stone. This gives Materials Marketing the unique ability to produce tiles and architectural items from the same stone, ensuring a seamless, consistent, beautiful look for all of its custom projects – both commercial and residential.
In fact, Materials Marketing is the only natural stone manufacturer and tile supplier in the US that controls the quarry production and owns and operates its own quarry and manufacturing facilities. Every product comes direct from the firm’s factories through its showrooms and into the client’s home or business. In the world of architecture and construction, this is a huge value and point of difference in what can oftentimes be a frustrating process filled with delays, mistakes and middlemen.
“We continually and consistently invest in the company from every aspect including training, technology and development. We listen to market demands and are able to quickly adapt

t’s an age-old problem with which many of us are all too familiar – try as we might, there will always be but 24 hours in a day. It was certainly the case for Sarah Benken, founder of personal assisting service Metro’s Other Woman. As a young entrepreneur, she bore the brunt of task and time management from an early age—and soon realized no one person or company existed that could stop the ticking clock. Benken knew what she so desperately wanted and needed: her time. Work and home life kept getting busier, but the hours remained the same. Instead of despairing, she decided to build a solution: a one-stop shop that covers all the ins and outs of busy twenty-first century life…a solution that allows on-the-go people to just breathe. Fast-forward six years and there are now five locations across the US, one of the most recent of which is Denver. A television producer turned entrepreneur, Jennifer Beasley opened the first Colorado branch of Metro’s Other Woman in 2015 to help people stop juggling and start achieving.
“We’re a group of truly independent women who you can count on to get things done. We are savvy, poised and professional and at the end of the day, we just want to make your life easier,” Beasley explains. “Our number one goal is to streamline and simplify your never-ending task list so you can breathe and take a load off.”
Whether that task list is filled with business duties or personal to-do’s, Beasley and her talented team can handle it all. And they handle it with the utmost of care and discretion. “We are Jills of all trades. We pride ourselves on being savvy, resourceful women and can help most anyone in almost any situation,” she says. As both a personal and business assisting

firm, Metro’s Other Woman is a one-stop shop that covers all the ins and outs of busy twenty-first century life and a solution that allows on-the-go people to just breathe. Beasley and her team work to diminish frenzy, calm chaos and create a safe zone where companies and individuals can rest easy about all of the things that never go away, but seem to so often get in the way – the “time-sucks” in our personal and professional lives. Whatever the time-suck – laundry, straightening up the home, personal organization, errand running, meal prep, event planning – Metro’s Other Woman’s answer is always the same: a simple “yes.”
For business owners, Beasley and her team are equally helpful - think administrative services, bookkeeping, social media, proofreading,
corporate event planning, data entry and more.
“We believe in being collaborative and relationship-oriented. We want to work with our clients to help them achieve the worklife balance they’re looking for,” Beasley attests. “I often tell our clients we handle anything they don’t want to do or don’t have time to do. And when I hand them a list of services, I also tell them if there is something they need that they don’t see listed, just ask –chances are, we’ve got you covered.”

AT HOME with INDIA HICKS
IT’S A TUESDAY EVENING IN APRIL AND THE SNOW IS FALLING IN DENVER. YET INSIDE THE HOME OF RAMEY CAULKINS, THERE’S A TROPICAL BREEZE IN THE AIR. TRUE, IT MIGHT BE THE HOSTESS’ WHITE LACE HOT PANTS OR THE GRAPEFRUIT COCKTAILS SHE’S SERVING. YET PERHAPS IT’S THE GUEST OF HONOR. TO RAMEY, SHE’S AN OLD PAL IN TOWN TO SHOWCASE HER NEW COLLECTION WHILE FITTING IN A LITTLE GAL TIME. TO THE REST OF US, SHE’S INDIA HICKS - THE ARISTOCRATIC ISLANDER WHOSE BRITISH MEETS BAHAMIAN STYLE HAS CAPTIVATED THE WORLD FOR DECADES.
BY BETSY MARR
“I WAS BORN UNDER A LUCKY STAR AND I WANTED TO SHARE A PART OF MY LIFE –A LITTLE BIT OF MY BRITISH HERITAGE AND A LOT OF MY ISLAND STORY.”
FOR HICKS, THE UNEXPECTED IS A familiar place to be. Her blue blood lineage runs deep. Her mother is Lady Pamela Hicks (once Queen Elizabeth’s Lady in Waiting) and her father, lauded king of interiors David Hicks. Her grandfather was Earl Mountbatten and she’s the goddaughter of Prince Charles (who wrote the forward to her most recent tome, Island Style ). And yes, she is in fact the doe eyed 13-year-old in those memorable wedding photos from his 1982 nuptials to Princess Diana. Hicks was a bridesmaid, donning that proverbial frock, its sleeves equally overpowering and unforgettable. So with a background this, well, noble, one would expect that the beauty would be living in one of London’s toniest addresses, to a man with the title to match. No – that’s not India. In fact, she calls the tiny Harbour Island Home, where she lives (unmarried no less) with her partner David Flint Wood and five children. It’s a tiny enclave – a mere 2,000 people reside there – but it’s relaxed and refined and elegant and unassuming and perfectly India. Most of all, it’s unexpected. And so when it came time for Hicks’ next business move, that same philosophy followed suit. She’s carved quite the career in turning her name and her lifestyle – India Hicks Island Living – into successful licensing ventures for the likes of HSN and Crabtree and Evelyn, even launching a fine jewelry line into Bloomingdales. She also owns a well-loved boutique, The Sugar Mill, on Harbour Island. Naturally, a collection of her own would mean bright lights and big names. Instead, she did the unthinkable – she launched her wares not into department stores, but rather, living rooms. “I didn’t want to see myself in a mass retailer with Aerin Lauder on one side and Tory Burch on another. It would get completely lost. Our collection tells a story, and no one can tell that story better than the women who live it,” she explains.
Like India, those stories are anything but ordinary. There’s the Carmen Clutch, a perfectly chic bag in the supplest of leathers with gorgeous interchangeable tassels. The name? For Hicks’ mother of course, who was mistakenly born in Madrid when her grandmother couldn’t quite make it back to London in time to get to the hospital. To celebrate the happy accident, she was given the middle name Carmen, after a stunning Spanish aristocrat who ran off with a bullfighter. And a shelf, no matter the department store, could never tell the story quite like that. Nor could it help build businesses for women who so desperately want to try something of their own, on their own terms, in their own homes, yet haven’t a clue where to begin.
“I wanted to create something for all of the women I know who like me, are just crazy frantic mums,” the leggy beauty and former Ralph Lauren model explains. “ I never want them to feel like they’re working for me. We’re working together.”
Her eponymous line, India Hicks London Harbour Island, is the perfect blend of the designer’s past and present. Bath and body
products, accessories and jewelry are all well crafted and luxe, yet with a casual approachability about them and at an accessible price point - $32 for a rollerball fragrance and $420 for a perfectly structured laptop bag (named for the Duchess of Windsor).
Admittedly, this is not simply a tupperware party reimagined. Hicks’ line is posh and inspired. Her self described lucky beetle serves as both logo and accoutrement on many of the products – cosmetic bags, scarves and totes – and she encourages her style ambassadors to invite friends over for a cup of tea or an island cocktail, both nods to her life and lineage.
“I was born under a lucky star and I wanted to share a part of my life – a little bit of my British heritage and a lot of my island story.”
It’s a story that seems to brim with an impossible chicness and one that continues to evolve.
Back in Harbour Island, Hicks lives a life unlike most, yet one that somehow remains relatable. Her home, Hibiscus Hill, is in many ways the island abode you’d expect. Yet inside, Hicks’ innate design prowess unfurls – after all, it’s in her DNA. From rare collections that she’s
curated over a lifetime to British antiques whose stories would regale even the most sophisticated gentry, the space is a reflection of the woman who resides there – the fashion model turned design powerhouse. The aristocrat turned entrepreneur. The Brit turned Bahamian. And the woman who runs her five children to school in a golf buggy and finds her inspiration in the pink sands and blue ocean. This is India Hicks.

WHEN YOUR LIFESTYLE IS BUSY AND BUSTLING,
your design sensibilities are sophisticated and contemporary and your neighborhood is classic and historic, building a residence from the ground up can be quite the challenge. Yet for Lynett and Lauren Brockman, the transformation of a small mid-century ranch into a house that was both modern and timeless resulted in the perfect place to call home.
Lauren, a well known real estate developer, and Lynett, an on-the-go professional, knew that they wanted to reside on one of the city’s classic tree lined streets, yet their tastes and their lifestyle called for a home that was more current in functionality and feel. “We lead a busy lifestyle. We love to cook and entertain friends and we wanted our home to be the perfect space to do so,” Lynett says. Along with a talented team of builders, architects and designers, the Brockmans set out to remove the land’s existing home and build a place to call their own. Yet doing so on a relatively small urban lot would require careful planning and consideration. “Jon Hindelman, our architect, helped us create an exterior that was in harmony with the historic neighborhood, despite being a new build,” she attests. Sourcing materials like tumbled brick from local craftsman and artisans, the Brockmans and their team created an extraordinary space both inside and out, paying careful attention to detail. In fact, the coach lights on the home’s entry were made in Louisiana – a nod to the couple’s southern roots.
A nano wall helped to create a seamless flow from the living room into the back yard – perfect for entertaining and enjoying the fresh Colorado air – while a luxuriously appointed kitchen serves as a focal point and frequent gathering space. What’s more, ceiling heights were maximized on all floors, making the home look and feel both open and airy.
Designer Andrea Schumacher worked with the home’s impressive architecture to achieve a look that is timeless and comfortable with the right balance of drama and intrigue. “Andrea has a great understanding of beauty and function,” Lynett explains. “Her ability to merge new pieces with our own furniture in a way that looked and felt intentional was exactly what we wanted.”
Indeed, the Brockmans created a home filled with modern comforts and classic charm. One perfect for entertaining. One that they’re proud to call home. ➺

SOMETIMES, A HOME CAN HAVE PLENTY of space, yet feel entirely too small. Such was the case with this downtown Aspen residence. The mountain respite of a young, active family, the abode was in need of an overhaul that spoke to the homeowner’s casual yet contemporary lifestyle and made use of a space that, while expansive, didn’t maximize everyday living. Working alongside Michael Fuller Architects and Jack Wilkie Builders, Melanie Grant and the team at Poss Interior Design reinvented the space into one that was modern and beautiful while remaining comfortable and functional.
“When in town, the couple loves to entertain so the public spaces needed to accommodate gatherings, yet they were also looking for something very livable for their young family,” Grant explains. “They preferred a somewhat minimalistic approach, nothing too overdone.”
With this in mind, the entire space was redesigned. A master bedroom located on the top level consisted of several small rooms including a bedroom, bath, kitchenette and half bath, so the team worked to open up the entire floor making it a true master suite. The den off of the kitchen on the main level was not being used so that became the media room – something the family spends many a movie night enjoying. Two guest bedrooms became children’s bedrooms and an entire unfinished basement was transformed into a playroom. All adaptations that made use of the home’s good bones, yet in a way that made sense for the new owners.
Furnishings and décor followed suit, blending with the home’s existing architecture, while adding decidedly mountain modern touches and playful pops of color, particularly in the children’s rooms. “When we got to the playroom, there was a departure from the quiet, neutral tones used in the main spaces. We used bright accent colors on the walls and a bold multicolored striped carpet for the floor covering throughout,” Grant recalls. “Every nook was filled with games and toys designed to spark the children’s imagination, including the space under the stairs above that became a hidden playroom reminiscent of Aspen’s mining town roots.”
Throughout the rest of the home, layers of texture and subtle color were used in the furnishings while more dramatic nods were brought in through art and architecture. Throughout the process, the design team worked with the homeowners to curate new works from local galleries with their own existing collection, all of which spoke to the home’s casual elegance. The end result was a refined yet relaxed space suited to the downtown Aspen locale. ➺
A River Runs THROUGH IT
WHEN A CLIENT BUILDS a home from the ground up, consideration for one’s surroundings is paramount – both in form and in function. Yet in some cases, the environment becomes not only a consideration but also an inspiration. When Aspen-based Land + Shelter architects set out to build a client’s home at the base of Mount Sopris along the Roaring Fork River, the area’s innate beauty inspired a design that was mindful of its surroundings on every level. And while the homeowner’s taste was modern and contemporary, the neighborhood’s covenants mandated a more traditional mountain abode. With this in mind, both architect and client worked collaboratively to create a space that would speak to the homeowner’s style sensibilities while remaining true to the area’s aesthetic. The result was a contemporary green build that pays homage to its landscape at every turn.
“The home is definitely an expression of my character, my love of the natural environment and of artistic expression through design and décor,” the homeowner explains. “The contemporary style reflects who I am and the comfortable flow is a reflection of the way I choose to live.”

Architecture by LAND + SHELTER
Seeking to create a modern home that met LEED guidelines at the highest of levels, the expansive space was designed as a one-story ranch built with livability in mind. The next objective? To maximize both mountain and river views. Land + Shelter accomplished this by creating a design that was traditional on its street facing side, while incorporating more contemporary lines into the home’s back side, which sat adjacent to the river. In fact, the home was constructed with a curvature to mirror a bend in the river and capture the sound of water rushing by. Floor-to-ceiling and corner-to-corner windows, all with unobstructed river and landscape views, added to the space’s natural beauty, as did thoughtful interior lighting and décor that highlights the client’s impressive art collections.
“The house feels as though it is at one with its natural surroundings. I truly have my dream home.” ➺
Sunkissed skin in bikinis and board shorts with the dreamy waft of coconut charming the ocean air. Oversized towels perfectly folded to show off their bright stripes. Giant umbrellas gifting shade on manicured sands while miniature parasols keep your cocktail company. Your favorite pair of sunnies to survey the scene as that carefree sailboat dances on the sea, the sway of the palms overhead and that gorgeous shrimp cocktail headed to Cabana 4. The back-and-forth pop of a tennis match. The croquet balls scattered on the south lawn. Seasonally-clad attendants strategically located and at your beck and call. From La Jolla and Newport to the Cape, Southampton and Palm Beach, iconic beach clubs steeped in history and celebrity have dotted America’s coasts for generations. What follows is a lineup of waterfront royalty where summertime blues only refer to the tint of polo shirts, top-siders and this season’s Lilly shift, proving yet again that membership has its privileges.
Balboa Bay Club
Newport Beach, California
Sandwiched between Pacific Coast Highway and Newport Bay, this iconic waterfront property has been the “Host of the Coast” since 1948. Celebrity mammoths including Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall have dipped their toes in the sand while the Duke himself, John Wayne, was on the Board of Governors. The club’s amenities have you wanting for nothing with a menu of leisure that includes sailing and boating, swimming and spa. On 15 acres conjoined to the recently added Balboa Bay Resort, guests are ensured that if they have to lift a finger, it’s on their own accord. The sparkling parade of luxury watercraft that constantly passes this jewel of the harbor is a sight in itself including Wayne’s former yacht, The Wild Goose, which is now part of Hornblower Cruises & Events’ seaside collection. balboabayclub.com
Jonathan Beach Club
Santa Monica, California
Jonathan Club is a Los Angeles institution that was the legacy of the region’s titans and forefathers back in 1895. The social club was the genesis of myriad projects that would shape the society of the area for generations to come. The Beach Club complements its downtown Los Angeles counterpart, and sun, sand and sea are your only agenda. The Pacific Ocean setting holds true to its roots with private membership, a dress code and an aura of sophistication and convention that is unrivaled in southern California history. jc.org
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
La Jolla, California
This coastal Xanadu north of San Diego was the creation of the Kellogg Family back in 1935 and is now in its fourth generation as the family-owned luxury destination. The club’s commitment to a stunning tennis venue is celebrated as it plays host to several tournaments with the likes of legends Arthur Ashe, Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe having hit forehands and backhands on the premises. From the courts to the shore, club members and hotel guests experience what’s often been called “the best in barefoot luxury” including a resort tradition of a car ride in a convertible 1915 Packard called the “Old Black Goose” along the beach. There’s also golf, massage and concierge service for countless excursions outside the gates for the perfect southern California summer. ljbtc.com

The Newport Beach Club
Portsmouth, Rhode Island
With the coastal masterpiece of Newport having caught the eye of the Vanderbilts, the Rockefellers and the Astors for their seaside retreats, chances are good that the locale will exceed even our loftiest expectations. With polo, sailing and tennis holding serve as East Coast seasonal staples, this private beach club on the shores of Narragansett Bay epitomizes rest and relaxation for the serious vacationer. Whether it’s yachting, swimming, kayaking or watching it all from your cabana, summering in Newport has its perks. thenewportbeachclub.com
Wychmere Beach Club
Harwich Port, Massachusetts
What’s a more traditional June-to-September respite in New England than Cape Cod?
Back in 1891, a $250 purchase of land would progressively transform into today’s multi-use compound stretching nearly 20 acres along Wychmere Harbor Channel and Nantucket Sound. Beach attendants are at your beck and call should you choose the private sands as your playground. Otherwise, the two heated pools replete with cabanas and attendants provide another tranquil alternative. There’s a summer adventure camp for the little ones while the fitness center, beach boot camp, personal training and spa services are all ready and waiting. Guest rooms, house suites and cottages afford one luxurious option after another in finding the perfect state of repose. wychmerebeachclub.com
Rehoboth Beach Country Club
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
This southern Delaware treat is no stranger to the “life’s a beach” mentality, boasting nearly 90 years as the area’s premier country club. With its proximity to Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York City, the Delmarva Peninsula plot exudes rest and relief with 150 acres of waterfront property. Golfers are pampered with the championship 18-hole course while the seasonal tennis complex, heated outdoor swimming pool overlooking Rehoboth Bay, stateof-the-art fitness center and a full-service clubhouse covers all bases on how to spend one’s downtime. rehobothbeachcc.com
Southampton Bath & Tennis Club
Southampton, New York
It has six clay tennis courts that Roland Garros would be proud of and white tennis clothing is the mandatory dress code while playing. The club does not advertise nor does it accept applications. If you’re looking to become a member, you need to know an existing one to even be considered. It’s pretty cut-and-dry as to what is required in getting a key to this remarkably private kingdom. While Alec Baldwin, Renee Zellweger, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren have all been mentioned in the same sentence with the property, Southampton Bath & Tennis Club is so protective and secretive about its members that one can only imagine the players who make up its roster.
Bailey’s Beach
Newport, Rhode Island
This elite private beach and club originated in the 1890s as the relocation destination of the area’s high society when they initially found themselves too close in proximity to a newly developed trolley service and working class. Members included the Vanderbilts and Astors and with a current group of roughly 500 families, new members are added only when old ones pass on. Officially named and owned by the Spouting Rock Beach Association, this is as private, exclusive and legacy driven as they come. spoutingrockbeach.com

The Beach Club
Palm Beach, Florida
We have come to expect nothing less than the perfect club emanating from a waterfront epicenter like Palm Beach. The Beach Club does not disappoint in this regard. With a heritage dating back to 1941, including the instance that ignited the Palm Beach gentlemen’s tradition of not wearing socks with shoes, this property is a seaside stunner. An Olympic-size swimming pool with cabanas on three sides, five tennis courts, a 70,000 square foot clubhouse with a ballroom, dining room and indoor courtyard with ceiling open to the sky are only a part of the marquee. Croquet became an integral sports amenity of the club in the early 1980s when three courts were added to the west side property. Game on. thebeachclub.net
The Breakers Ocean Club
Palm Beach, Florida
Another treasure in the 33480 zip code, club members are transported to an oasis of Mediterranean-style with four different pools, five whirlpool spas and a half mile of private beach for an array of water therapies. There are also 25 private, luxury bungalows available, complete with personal concierge service. Florida’s oldest 18-hole golf course, the Ocean Course, complements the property for a day on the links unless you’re partial to tennis, yoga, pilates or the 20,000 square foot indoor/outdoor retreat that is The Spa at The Breakers.

DARLINGS

Ramey Caulkins
Step inside Ramey’s home, just south of the historic Denver Country Club and you instantly get a sense of who this woman is. Casual, yet traditional. Capricious and comfortable yet impossibly put together. A menagerie of classic good taste that imparts delight everywhere you look. So totally uncontrived and authentic that you can’t help but smile. This isn’t just Ramey Caulkins’ home. This is Ramey Caulkins. “I’m a hot mess, but I try to be a cute hot mess,” she laughs. Candor aside, Caulkins is anything but. And it’s this unpretentious sense of effortless chic that draws us in again and again. Her eye for style developed at a young age – Caulkins’ mother was a decorator and as a child, she answered telephones and filed fabric swatches. “I think back now on the homes I lived in as a child. While I likely didn’t appreciate the décor then, I definitely draw on those detailed memories now,” she explains.
MY FAVORITE ROOM IN MY HOME IS
Our den, off of our kitchen.
I LOVE IT BECAUSE
The current den was previously our dining room. Being a decorator can be an occupational hazard. One winter weekend I was fretting over the fact that I never sat in our living room in our entry. I was convincing my dear friend (also a decorator) that I should switch my living room and dining room furniture. When she came by for coffee she declared that we would swap the furniture right then and there. So we did! I never changed any of the rugs or window treatments, and it all worked. Voila…two new rooms. We use the den even more for small gatherings and morning newspaper reading and now, our dining room has a fireplace and looks great from the entry!
IF I COULD LIVE IN ANY HOME OTHER THAN MY OWN IT WOULD BE
My grandmother’s house in Florida. I cherish every moment I spent with her in that late 1970s ranch. It wasn’t fancy, it was just so livable and I adored her screened in porch. We would sit for hours playing cards on her very chic Salterini patio furniture. I would give anything to go back to those evenings with my grandmother.
THE EASIEST AREA WHERE ONE CAN SAVE MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO DÉCOR IS
Using wallpaper is more expensive than painting a room. If you want to be creative, but still frugal, consider wallpapering the ceiling only. Paint all trim and walls in a dominant color featured in the wallpaper. It will look like a jewel box. This is a great feature in a small bathroom or office.

Traditionally the tables were used to place a telephone and phone book. I always loved the twotiered table look, but wanted something functional. Andrea Schumacher
A television set designer turned interior designer, Andrea Schumacher’s resume is ornamented and impressive. From studies in design at Harvard University, to stints as the set stylist for Days of Our Lives to designing show home spaces at Los Angeles’ legendary Graystone Mansion, she’s not your average decorator. Nor is her style. Known for her pops of color, traditional-meets-modern vibe and perfectly put together spaces, Andrea Schumacher’s projects are the epitome of eye candy. Naturally, so is her own home. A mid-century modern abode in the picturesque Bow Mar enclave, Schumacher’s digs are anything but typical. And that is exactly why we love her.
MY FAVORITE ROOM IN MY HOME IS
My dining room.
I LOVE IT BECAUSE
Not only is it where I can have family and friends for a meal, but my dining room is light and bright and airy. Plus, it has a story to tell. The table base and top were from the woman who lived in this house before us. She was a fabulous lady, once Miss Colorado, and an all around classy and worldly woman. The chandelier I found in a basement of a lighting dealer in New York City. It was still in the original box from 1972 and was wrapped in newspaper from that time. I added the chairs and the rug to modernize and give it a little sass.
THE FIRST DESIGNER TO MAKE A TRUE IMPRESSION ON ME WAS Garrett Lewis, set designer on the movie Hook in 1991. I was working at Sony Pictures at the time and would walk by that set every single day, marveling at the huge model of what it was to look like. It was so incredible how much creativity it took to not only dream it up, but to execute it in a warehouse, with running water!
IF I COULD LIVE IN ANY HOME OTHER THAN MY OWN, IT WOULD BE
The Kaufman House in Palm Springs. It epitomizes a glamorous lifestyle in an era that was carefree and bit more hedonistic than the busy lives we lead today.
THE BEST MONEY ONE CAN SPEND WHEN IT COMES TO DÉCOR IS
Gorgeous fabrics, wall coverings and art. Art is undeniably something one can feel safe investing in and it will be treasured for many lives beyond ours. Fabric and wallpaper make a house a home - it's like putting a great tie on a beautiful suit.
THE ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO WHEN DESIGNING A ROOM IS
To have your upholstered furniture not made locally. You save on shipping, you get better quality and you can make it fit your home perfectly. Plus, it helps our local craftsmen.

Beth Armijo
Beth Armijo didn’t begin as a designer, but an innate sense of style and a flair for all things creative were there from the get-go. In fact, she’s been an artist since the age of three, when she first picked up a paintbrush. So when the Colorado native decided to head to the west coast for design school in San Francisco, her passion soon revealed itself. “My background is in art and that is how I became a designer,” Armijo explains. “I have painted my whole life and decorating speaks to the right and left sides of my brain – both the creative and the business minded.” With a spot on style that’s colorful, contemporary and chic without being ostentatious, Armijo’s design savvy is one that both impresses and intrigues. A newlywed who is expecting her first child this fall, the artist-turned interior designer has an infectious energy and genuine regard for her clients and their homes. “In every project, I always incorporate something that my client has picked out themselves – something that is ’them’ - and I design around it. I want each room to have something they can take ownership of. Something that lets their personality shine through.”
MY FAVORITE ROOM IN MY HOME IS Not in my home! It is actually my office space in the Glass House downtown.
I LOVE IT BECAUSE
I used to live there and when I moved into a larger home, decided to transform it into an office for our team. It’s fun because I really designed it as a living space as well as a workspace. It’s where I started my business and is such a part of my story. The fact that it was once a home gives it a little more character than a typical professional setting – it’s cozy and comfortable. Plus there are huge windows with great light and views. As a designer working in a space that is more reminiscent of a home than a sterile office feels apropos and inspired.
MY DESIGN INSPIRATION FOR THE SPACE WAS I used a lot of color, which works because there’s so much bright, natural light. I also designed around the art – from Italian botanicals to oil paintings and more modern pieces. Other people’s creative work really inspires me.
THE BEST MONEY ONE CAN SPEND WHEN IT COMES TO DÉCOR IS Well made, upholstered furniture. You’ll never throw it away. Instead, you will simply recover it as your life and style evolves.
THE ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO WHEN DESIGNING A ROOM IS Push furniture against the wall. Nothing is worse. Your room needs to be 3D so that your eye can dance around it. You need to fill a room, not just line it up.

BILLY BALDWIN
Known as the “dean of interior decorators” Billy Baldwin is heralded as the country’s best and brightest, perhaps of all time. Just don’t call him a designer – Baldwin abhorred the term. A fan of simplicity, his aesthetic was equal parts clean cut and chic. Baldwin’s loves were many – from simple lines to pattern on pattern, to lacquer, bamboo, Chinese wallpaper and plaster lamps. Yet he is best known for the two timeless pieces of furniture that he designed –the étagère and the slipper chair. “First and foremost, furniture must be comfortable,” he affirmed. “That is the original purpose of it, after all.” True to his word, Baldwin always designed for livability and believed that comfort was the ultimate luxury.

SISTER PARISH
Design genes run in Sister Parish’s family – her cousin was famed decorator Dorothy Draper. Yet Parish’s (whose given name was also Dorothy) style was all her own. Beloved for her “more is more” approach to American interiors, Sister Parish was partial to plenty of color, chintz fabrics, rag rugs, painted furniture and red lacquer secretaries. Yet she mixed it up with traditional, formal pieces and classic textiles – a look that led Parish into the doors of the Kennedy White House where she was Jackie’s first decorator, putting her stamp on both the Family Dining Room and Yellow Oval Room. Along with business partner and equally celebrated designer Albert Hadley, Sister Parish decorated rooms for families to truly live in at a time when America’s upper crust was more inclined to decorate for pomp and circumstance. It was a philosophy that led to decades of success. "Some think a decorator should change a house. I try to give permanence to a house, to bring out the experiences, the memories, the feelings that make it a home." Today, Parish’s namesake textiles continue to bring joy and comfort to design lovers everywhere.
Behind every attractive room there should be
a very good reason.

ARNE JACOBSEN
While Danish architect Arne Jacobsen may be better known for the innovative buildings he brought to life, his design legacy is just as important in terms of mid century modern aesthetics. The first of his famous interior projects (Jacobsen refused to call himself a designer) was Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel, where he designed everything both inside and outside of its walls – from the building to the furnishings to the ashtrays and gift shop trinkets. Jacobsen also designed the hotel’s airport buses – a feat that is rare even by today’s standards. “If a building becomes architecture, then it is art,” he is credited with saying. Yet perhaps his greatest contributions to design were his legendary chairs. Arne Jacobsen is the father of the Drop, Egg, Swan and Ant chair styles, among many others. All of which continue to attract lovers of modern décor over fifty years later.
Architecture tends to consume everything else, it has become one's entire life.

ELSIE de WOLFE
An actress, socialite and author, many will argue that Elsie de Wolfe invented interior decoration, at least as a profession. Yet not only was she the first, Elsie de Wolfe remains one of the best and most influential in terms of timeless, elegant design. In fact, her tome The House in Good Taste continues to grace the bookshelves of gentries the world around, over a century after its original publication. Her style was largely influenced by late 18th c. design and she preferred uncluttered elegance – light, bright rooms that were never overdone, yet always opulent. At the time, Victorian interiors brimmed with dark walls and heavy draperies, something that de Wolfe detested. She was a trailblazer, changing America and Europe’s finest residences into airy abodes. “I opened the windows and doors of America and let the sun shine in,” she decreed. Among de Wolfe’s most notable contributions to design are the popularization of the chaise lounge, animal print, chinoiserie and faux finish treatments.

AN AFFAIR WITH

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
These were the words of President Theodore Roosevelt and this has been my philosophy for as long as I can remember. It holds true for almost anything – life, fashion, business, entertaining, design – but most importantly, it holds true for giving back to the communities in which we live. Several months ago, Reign Magazine sponsored a fundraiser for Excelsior Youth Center, a charity very near and dear to our hearts and one we’ve supported since our inception. Admittedly, we’re a small business with limited resources. As such, a large cash donation just wasn’t a reality – but we knew we could help somehow, some way. And so we followed our own advice. What we could do was help the young women of Excelsior. What we had was infinite creativity and kindhearted partners willing to give. Where we were was in a position to leverage those things for the ultimate win-win.
THE SOIRÉE
Reign Magazine joined forces with its favorite entertaining aficionados, Chef Linda Hampsten Fox and DesignWorks’ David Squires, to create the ultimate cocktail party. From the cuisine to the cocktails and the florals to the furnishings, we hosted a fête that was brimming with dreamy details. Yet at the center of it all was Excelsior Youth Center. During the organization’s annual gala, generous supporters opened their hearts (and their checkbooks) for a chance to join us in our pursuits. The twenty lucky couples who bid on this live auction item made up our guest list for the evening.
THE CUISINE
From there, we collaborated with Chef Hampsten Fox, a woman known for her inventive approach to cooking and food, and a chef by whom we’re eternally inspired. Not only did she serve as our queen of cuisine for the evening, she also served as hostess. Along with her husband Dr. Stephen Fox, Linda opened the doors to her penthouse loft in Denver’s historic Ice House Building where our party took place. In fact, the menu was inspired by the very walls that surround it. Once a true “Ice House” built for the Littleton Creamery in 1903, it was the home to the city’s milk, butter and cheeses. As such, Chef Hampsten Fox's menu included reimagined classics like Grilled Oysters with Green Garlic and Pernod Butter, Milk and Tea Brined Lamb Chops and a Milk and Honey Panna Cotta. In total, the over-the-top menu included twenty small plate courses that were served progressively as the evening unfolded.
THE COCKTAILS
A twenty course tasting menu created by one of the culinary world’s finest would be a tough act for anyone to follow, but mixologist Kyle Duce rose to the occasion, creating four one-of-a-kind signature cocktails. Using liquors from local craft distilleries, Duce designed a cocktail menu with gin, vodka, mescal and whiskey based libations. One of the standouts was his modern take on the classic Manhattan. Duce carefully blended cold brew coffee with Leopold’s small batch whiskey, homemade clove bitters and sweet vermouth. Naturally, he garnished the drink with a perfect Luxardo cherry. For those who preferred something a bit lighter, the Bees Knees was a favorite – St. George Botanic Gin was flawlessly mixed with fresh lemon juice and infused with honey before being topped with bubbly and rimmed with citrus sugar.
THE DÉCOR & ENTERTAINMENT
Working with a blank canvas overlooking Union Station, David Squires of DesignWorks created a space that was equal parts classic and modern. Chef Hampsten Fox’s patio was transformed into a menagerie of boxwood, white lacquer, flickering candlelight and brilliant blooms. Guests reveled in eats and sips as they enjoyed all that surrounded them – from opulent floral arrangements with incredible texture and color, to an impressive bar flanked by a boxwood wall. Indoors, DesignWorks used a palette of lavender, eggplant and neutral hues to entice the eye.
As a special treat, guests were serenaded by Denver’s legendary songstress Lannie Garrett. A longtime Excelsior supporter, Garrett entertained the group with a small private concert, as her pianist tickled the ivories on the baby grand piano. The perfect complement to the perfect evening.

Reign Magazine served as media sponsor for the event, which saw nearly 600 women in colorful garb enjoying the afternoon at the Seawell Ballroom. May you never be afraid to be bold and bright.
May you surround yourself with beauty, both inside and out. May you always choose form over function.
May you find inspiration in the most unexpected of places. And may you learn the rules, if only to know when to break them.
