Build a Bears for Foster Care

In honor of National Hugs Day, celebrated every year on January 21st, I wanted to take a creative approach to service. Thus, after coordinating with Build-A-Bear Workshop in the Galleria Mall at Crystal Run, we sought to donate stuffed bears to children in Orange County Foster Care homes! As a part of the experience, members got to pick out their Build-A-Bears and stuff them at stations in the workshop. They then participated in the traditional heart ceremony, tucking tiny fabric hearts into their Build-ABears´ backs. At the finish of the ceremony, members picked out and sponsored accessories to personalize their bears. Once their Build-ABears were dressed to the nines, members made adoption certificates to create unique names and pick out birthdays for their stuffed bears. Some members thought of pop culture and even historical references by picking names like "Beary Styles" and "Teddy Roosevelt." Others decided on classic names like "Cuddles" and "Hugs." Ultimately, the Minisink Valley Key Club contributed in giving homes to a total of 55 Build-A-Bears undoubtedly stuffed with love. From the absolute bottom of my heart, thank you so much to the membership of Minisink Valley Key Club. Because of your service, you will be gifting a child their new best friend. Our Minisink Valley Kiwanis Advisor, Mrs. Ewanciw, spoke on the message that the project hopes to spread, ¨All I can say is I hope each child who receives a bear can feel the love and caring that went into the creation and I hope it helps to know there are people who care. We are here to make your tomorrows brighter.¨ -Olivia Lombardo President, Minisink Valley HS Division 13 Division 14 Newsletter ~ Page 5

Kiwanis Luncheon On January 20th our Key Club had the pleasure of meeting with our local Kiwanis Club via Zoom. We usually hold an in person luncheon with them but were happy to hold it both safely and virtually. The Kiwanis Club filled us in on some things they've been doing but they mostly let us do the talking with some great questions! Governor Chloe Baker is a member of our club so she spoke about her Governor’s project--Thirst Project-- and the ways the New York District has been supporting it. We discussed how the District has passed both our fundraising and service hour goals and a little about the upcoming Leadership Training Conference. A main talking point was our approaching Scarf-A-Life project. In this project our club hangs hand knit scarves around town for community members in need to take. It always proves to be a very fulfilling and meaningful experience. Ticonderoga Key Club is extremely grateful for all the support we receive from the Tiiconderoga Kiwanis Club. From helping with our dues payment to the scholarships they give out each year we really cannot thank them enough! -Audrey Cook Secretary, Ticonderoga HS Division 14

GOVERNOR'S PROJECT This year, Governor Chloe chose the Thirst Project as her Governor's Project. Thirst Project is a nonprofit that works with youth to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water. DISTRICT PROJECT Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is changing the lives of children with cancer by funding impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families, and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer. ALSF and its supporters are propelling the world towards a future without childhood cancer. Everyone can make a difference and help find cures for childhood cancer. Division 14 Newsletter ~ Page 9

DISTRICT ENDORSED PROJECT The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was created in the 20002001 service year. Lyme Disease is caused by the bacteria found in deer ticks. The faster the treatment, the lower possibility of longer symptoms. Many insurance companies do not pay for treatment, so the KPLDF works hard to help lower the cost. For more information click here.

HYDRATE FOR 28 Thirst Project's 28 day hydration challenge--HYDRATE FOR 28!! Because hydration is key! For more information click here. "In 2020, we were tested unlike ever before! We were told to stay indoors and wash our hands, but rarely to hydrate. At Thirst Project, we know how important it is to have access to clean water, but we also know how important it is to drink clean water on a consistent basis. This year, we're teaming up with Key Club International to highlight the importance of hydration."
