October 2019 Edition!

Written By: Chloe Baker Lieutenant Governor

Lieutenant Governor's Greeting

Hi Everyone, I hope your first month of school has been great! This month has been a little busy for me but it's nothing too overwhelming. As you settle into the school year, please make sure to keep up with your paperwork! Most of you have not filled out the MFRs from this summer. Shoutout to Keene, Seton Catholic and Ticonderoga for submitting their ERFs! As new students enter your schools, I hope that your clubs have gained a few members! Don't be afraid to reach out to students and tell them how awesome Key Club is! For all of you playing a fall sport, I hope your season is going great! And good luck to seniors who are applying to colleges this fall! Yours Truly, Chloe Baker

Service Spotlight

On October 9 2019, Ticonderoga High School hosted a blood drive for the American Red Cross. Members of the Ticonderoga Key Club hosted in our gym and volunteered our time registering donors. Some members were even kind enough to donate their own blood. Quite a few people showed up, and the student and staff turnout were incredible. We collected about 30 units of blood, that will go to the blood bank for later use. In conjunction with the blood drive in the spring, the American Red Cross will provide a scholarship to one of our graduating seniors who has worked a large number of service hours in their high school career. We hope that the spring blood drive will be more successful, so the deserving graduates will receive aid for higher education. Thank you to Anna McDonald, Gabe Vigliotti, Kim Wojick, Amber Fraiser, Natasha Manning, Lizzy Snyder, Sophia Zelinski, Adrian Paige, and Chloe Baker for their generous help! -Adrian Paige, Treasurer Ticonderoga High School Key Club

Governor's Project

The New York Chapter of the Special Olympics is an organization that helps people with intellectual disabilities experience working as a team and other assets that come from playing a sport. The athletes also develop life long friendships along the way. I know that in our division specifically there is multiple Unified Basketball Teams, so be sure to lend a hand at practice and support the best you can!

District Project Project Semicolon advocates for suicide prevention through public awareness, educating communities, and giving people the tools they need for their mental health. Since 2013, Project Semicolon has helped more than 5 million individuals. *Please refrain from using the phrases ‘commit suicide’ or ‘successful suicide’ and instead say ‘died by suicide’*

District Endorsed Project The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was created in the 2000-2001 service year. Lyme Disease is caused by the bacteria found in deer ticks. In New York State, it is common for people to find a deer tick on them if they have spent a long time outdoors. The faster the treatment, the lower possibilities of longer symptoms. Many insurance companies do not pay for treatment, so the KPLDF works hard to help lower the cost.

Service Project Ideas Here are some fall service project ideas! - Organize a food drive for your local pantry - Rake leaves for senior citizens - Collect gently used children's books for your local library - Volunteer at a soup kitchen - Host a Thanksgiving Dinner for those you can't have their own - Organize a winter clothing drive - Clean a local park - Collect school supplies for students in need NYDKC Division 14 October Newsletter Page 7
