Dwelmdeurbraak Sinoville-polisie lê beslag op chemikalieë en toerusting waarmee dwelms vervaardig word Natashia Hudson Die Sinoville-polisie het verlede week ’n groot slag teen dwelms geslaan toe chemikalieë en toerus ting, wat dwelms ter waarde van R3 miljoen kan vervaardig, gevind is. Dié toerusting en dwelmbestanddele is 18 Oktober in ’n onderdakmotorhuis, wat as ’n stoorplek verhuur word, agter die Zambesi Junction-sentrum gekry.

Volgens adjudant-offisier Ben Strydom, woordvoerder van Sino ville-polisiestasie, het die eienaar die perseel oopgesluit nadat die huurder nie sy huur betaal het nie. Die eienaar het op die verdagte items afgekom en die Sinovillepolisie in kennis gestel. Lede van die polisiestasie asook die K9-honde-eenheid het verdere ondersoek ingestel en bevestig dat die chemikalieë en toerusting wat op die perseel gevind is, gebruik

kord gesê. Volgens Strydom is die huurder van die perseel reeds ’n paar weke gelede gearresteer en is hy tans in aanhouding vir verskeie ander klagtes insluitend voertuigkaping en huisinbraak. Hy sal vir ’n aparte saak aange kla word. Strydom het verder gesê die kans dat ’n dwelmlaboratorium in Sinoville gevind word baie skraal is en dit ’n groot deurbraak in die geveg teen dwelms is.

Karel Griffin, ’n bestuurder wat agter die taxi was, het bevestig dat die bestuurder van die taxi haar voertuig na die kant van die pad geskuif het na die ongeluk. Hy het verder gesê dat dit gelyk het of die verkeerslig pas oranje geslaan het toe die bestuurder van die taxi regs gedraai het sonder om vir aankomende verkeer uit te kyk. Knell het gesê dat as gevolg van die soort beserings wat haar kinders opgedoen het, vermoed sy dat die taxi oor die kinders gery het toe sy haar voertuig geskuif het. Volgens Knell wil sy graag perspektief kry oor wat gebeur het sodat sy genesing kan vind. “Hierdie ongeluk het ons lewens verwoes. Niks is meer dieselfde nie. Ek soek net antwoorde sodat ek met my lewe kan aangaan.”

Wicks said paramedics arrived on the scene to find the man lying in the middle of the road near the wreckage of the motorcycle. He died before they arrived on the scene. Warrant Officer Ben Strydom of the Sinoville police, confirmed there had been an accident involving a motorcyclist and a taxi on Airport Road on Friday night. Three people died and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision Sunday morning on the Moloto Road in Pretoria. A Fiat Uno and a bakkie reportedly collided head-on at a high speed causing the bakkie to overturn. The cause of the accident is still unknown. According to André Visser of ER24, the male driver of the bakkie was trapped in his vehicle and local fire and rescue services had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to free the man. He received treatment at the

scene before being airlifted to hospital. The other vehicle with a 7-month-old baby, one female and two male occupants was also badly wrecked during the accident. The baby and the two men, one of which was the driver, sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene. According to Visser the female occupant was allegedly thrown from the vehicle and found a few meters away from where the collision occurred. She was treated for various injuries, including multiple fractures and was later airlifted to hospital for medical care. The Tshwane metro police

Jannie Pieterse, ’n inwoner, beskryf die sluipslaperprobleem as ’n riller. Mense van die omgewing is moedeloos met die situasie.

Oop veld los inwoners raadop Natashia Hudson Inwoners van Montanapark sukkel al vir meer as tien jaar met sluipslapers wat onwettig op ’n oop stuk veld op die hoek van Enkeldoorn- en Vedaweg oorkant die Kolonnade-winkelsentrum woon. Volgens Jannie Pieterse, wie se agterstoep op die oop stuk grond uitkyk, het die probleem oor die afgelope ses jaar drasties vererger. Hy het aan Rekord gesê dat die ongeveer 50 plakkers wat elke aand daar slaap, verskeie probleme veroorsaak. Rekord het in 2005 oor dié probleem berig en inwoners is deur die Tshwane-metro gevra om klagtes by die metropolisie aan te meld sodat die polisie die situasie kan monitor. Pieterse het gesê dat die polisie wel die omgewing gereeld patrolleer en die sluipslapers verwyder, maar die sluip slapers keer die volgende dag weer terug. Pieterse se lys van klagtes sluit onder meer die onwettige gebruik van alkohol en dwelms, rusverstoring, oop vure en rommelstorting in. Hy het ook gekla oor seksuele aktiwiteite, vomering en ontlasting wat onder

twee bome agter hul muur plaasgevind het. Pieterse het die bome onlangs afgesaag. Hy het verder verduidelik hoe ontwrigtend en frustrerend die situasie vir hul gesin is. “Dit is soos ’n sluikkroeg hier op ’n Saterdag en Sondag. Dit wemel en raas. Een Sondagoggend toe sien ons ’n lykswa hier. Ons vind toe later uit dat ’n man deur die nag keelaf gesny is.” Pieterse en sy gesin voel nie meer veilig nie en is bekommerd omdat daar blykbaar niks aan die saak gedoen word nie. Hy het ’n lêer vol korrespondensie tussen hom en verskeie departemente aangaande die probleem aan Rekord gewys. Die korrespon densie strek oor die afgelope 12 jaar. Pieterse het in Januarie vanjaar ’n brief aan die metro gestuur waarin hy die klagtes uiteengesit het en sy moedeloosheid oor die situasie uitgespreek het. Die metro se streeksbevelvoerder, Frans Bhebe, het in Februarie op die brief gereageer en gesê dat die grond aan die departement van onderwys behoort en dat dié departement gekontak is om die grond te omhein. Charles Phahlane, woordvoerder van die

Gauteng departement van onderwys, het gesê dat hy ondersoek na die saak sal instel. Rekord het met een van die sluipslapers, Moses Mahlangu, gepraat. Mahlangu het skouerophalend gesê dat hy dit nie kan bekostig om in die week tussen sy huis en werk te pendel nie en daarom slaap hy in die oop stuk veld.

Moses Mahlangu erken dat hy en tussen 40 en 60 ander mense elke aand op die oop stuk veld slaap.

Traffic will literally come to a standstill in the Pretoria CBD as thousands of disgruntled youths will march to the Union Buildings on Thursday and Friday to make their voice heard about unemployment and free education for the youth. The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has set aside October 27 and 28 as the official dates to roll out mass action to strategic centres of power in South Africa. On Thursday ANCYL will lead mass action and protests to the Chamber of Mines to demand the nationalisation of mines and equal share in the country’s mineral resources. From the Chamber of Mines, ANCYL will lead a march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton to demand an equal share in the country’s wealth. The mass action will go to the Union Buildings for a night vigil, which will culminate in the handing over of a memorandum, demanding free education, the immediate abolishment of labour brokers, jobs for the youth, better housing and sanitation for informal settlement dwellers and access to water. According to the Tshwane head of Community Safety, General Daniel Manganye, the city is ready for the march. A final meeting with all the role players of the planned march will be held later this week. “We had several meetings, but I do not want to disclose anything at the moment,” said Manganye. Manganye told Rekord that traffic in the inner city will be affected but the metro police will make sure that motorists do not suffer as a result of the planned march.

Waiting list cleared Natalie Grobler

The entire waiting list at the Steve Biko Academic hospital for the removal of tonsils for the past three years, have been cleared. This comes after Mediclinic joined forces with the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development and Steve Biko to perform 60 tonsillectomies on public sector patients at Mediclinic Medforum. Sixty tonsillectomies were performed over the past two weeks on patients who came via Steve Biko without any cost to the state or to themselves. “This joint venture is part of our tiered CSI platform, of which tier one comprises partnering with public hospitals to provide access to quality healthcare to a broader section of our society,” said Dr Nkaki Matlala, government and industry affairs executive of Mediclinic. He said that despite their willingness to carry on such projects they are sometimes met with red tape and indifferences when they try to do so. He added that Mediclinic supports the principal of delivering cost-effective healthcare for South Africans and believes this can be achieved through a joint effort between the public and private healthcare sectors. “It is important to remember that some of the problems facing the private and public sector are common and can only be overcome by working together. “The severe shortage of healthcare professionals affects both sectors and will remain a critical obstacle,” he said. Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe, said the partnership they sealed last week marks a bond that will benefit residents of Pretoria and surrounding areas. “In many instances private health providers are viewed as people who have misused health care, by chasing profits, but the fact that Mediclinic approached Steve Biko with an offer to help reduce the backlog points to their responsiveness to the acute needs of our residents,” she said. She said the intervention already brought relief to 60 patients who have had their tonsils removed at the Mediforum hospital at the cost of Mediclinic.

Minister halts works The Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Ndebele, has called for an immediate halt to any further roadworks on Gauteng’s freeways until the toll issue has been resolved. Nedebele released a statement on October 23 saying that although the first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has delivered good road infrastructure, it was an expensive exercise that has drawn sharp critique from the public and that consultation is the only way forward. “All spheres of government should be part of a consultation process with all affected parties, consumers in the main. Good infrastructure is a necessity for a better future for our country, but this requirement must not leave our people even poorer,” said Ndebele. The Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) is accusing Ndebele of holding Gauteng motorists hostage after his statement to stop any further road maintenance works until the toll issue has been resolved. Howard Dembovsky, national chairman of the JPSA, said the organisation is shocked with what they describe as Ndebele’s lack of foresight. “The first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has not been completed yet, unless the first phase only included the N1 and R21 freeways. The N12 and N3 freeways in Johannesburg are in such a shocking demolished state of dilapidation that they constantly cause crashes and daily gridlock traffic. Calling a halt to their reinstatement as usable

freeways is little short of insanity,” Dembovsky said. “There is a vast difference between calling a halt to planned tolling and calling a halt to the construction of roads, which have been demolished by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and its contractors.” Dembovsky also said that the minister should not resort to measures that may be seen as punishment tactics. “One of the most prevalent factors in road fatalities is poor engineering and if the minister thinks he can punish motorists for being angry with his and Sanral’s intent to profit from tolling freeways, he is mistaken.” He added that the answer to implementing and maintaining roads infrastructure in South Africa lies in the coming up with workable solutions that would benefit the public and from spending money collected from existing taxation and possibly even reasonable tolling on the roads infrastructure. “There is nothing wrong with saying: Minister Ndebele said all these processes, including a consultative process initiated by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, should be allowed to reach their logical conclusions to ensure that all parties concerned and their respective views are brought on board. Blackmailing motorists by leaving current road construction projects unfinished, is completely unacceptable.” The JPSA has also warned that Ndebele and Sanral might open themselves to legal action from motorists.

Dit kom nadat die skaaphond, Tucker en ’n wit Duitse herdershond vir weke in die pyp gebly het waar inwoners vir hulle kos en water geneem het. “Ek en my dogter, Desré, het vir die afgelope vyf weke vir die honde kos en water gebring. Daar was ander mense ook wat dieselfde gedoen het omdat daar reeds

bakke was,” het Susan Smith, ’n inwoner van die omgewing gesê. Sy het gesê hulle het toe vir sowat drie dae net die herdershond opgemerk en daar geen teken van die skaaphond was nie. “Ons het bekommerd geraak en toe vir Wetnose gebel. Hulle het dadelik gekom om ons te help,” het ’n verligte Smith gesê. Sy het gesê toe Wetnose daar kom het die herdershond spore gemaak. Hy het weggehardloop en hulle kon hom nie weer kry nie. Die inspekteurs het toe die lang pyp aangedurf. Volgens Jacques van der Merwe, inspekteur van Wetnose, het die skaaphond aan die ander kant van die pyp gelê. Hy moes toe in die pyp inkruip om hom uit te haal. Debbie Herselman, hoofbestuurder van Wetnose, het gesê hulle gaan aan Tucker mediese hulp verleen. Sy vermoed ook dat hy bosluiskoors het. “Tucker behoort vinnig weer op die been te wees. Ons gaan hom behandel en as die medisyne nie werk nie sal ons vir hom ’n bloedoortapping gee,” het sy gesê. Sy het gesê hulle gaan hom goed versorg waarna hulle vir hom ’n liefdevolle gesin sal kry.

Zuma reminded journalists that on September 15 he announced that he would, in terms of section 84(2)(f) of the Constitution, appoint a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of wrongdoing in the Strategic Defence Procurement Packages, generally known as the arms deal. “I have appointed the commission. The esteemed members include Justice Willie Seriti, Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Justice Willem van der Merwe, Deputy Judge President of the North Gauteng High Court and Justice Francis Legodi, Judge of

the North Gauteng High Court,” said Zuma. He added that Justice Seriti would chair the commission, which is expected to complete its work within two years. Most of the opposition parties have welcomed Zuma’s cabinet reshuffling but also criticised him for taking too long before acting against corruption. ACDP president, Reverend Kenneth Moshoe said his party welcomes the removal of Shiceka and Mahlangu but they believe action against the two former ministers was long overdue. “ACDP also welcomes the decision to appoint the commission of enquiry to investigate the alleged arms deal corruption,” said Meshoe. He added that they question the two year period to investigate the arms deal corruption as they believe countries like Sweden and Britain have concluded their investigations and have information readily available. Meshoe said they believe the commission can easily conclude the investigation within 12 months.

are swimming. “Babies and the elderly are more likely to suffer from heatstroke due to inadequate thermal regulation systems, so ensure that they are monitored closely during this time. It is also important that children or animals are not left in a vehicle with the windows closed,” Vermaak said. According to Vermaak, people often focus their attention on other humans, but should also keep their pets in mind. According to ER24 during severe heat-

stroke or exhaustion the following signs or symptoms may be noticed: severe headache, weakness or disorientation, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps or severe thirst. “It is important that a person presenting these signs and symptoms is closely monitored as it could result in the patient losing consciousness or having seizures, which could result in death. Persisting symptoms of any of the above may need immediate medical attention,” Vermaak said.

Police are on the alert after several incidences of xenophobic violence took place last week in Laudium, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Alexandra. Rumours are afloat that more violence is planned for this week. This calls to mind the terrible scenes of xenophobic violence we experienced in May 2008, leaving 70 people dead. Now as a new bout of protests has reared its head, South Africans are worried about how to avoid a repeat of the horrific violence. In the dictionary the term ‘xenophobia’ is defined as a hatred or fear of foreigners. It describes xenophobia as an ‘attitude’ rather than an ‘action’ or ‘practice’. For South Africa this definition needs to be rewritten. Here xenophobia can’t be separated from violence and physical abuse. This hostility against foreigners is explained in terms of limited resources. In the post-apartheid epoch a realisation that delivery is not immediate has meant that discontent and indignation are at their peak. People are more conscious of their deprivation than ever before. This is the ideal situation for a phenomenon like xenophobia to take root and flourish and to find a scapegoat. In November we will be celebrating the National Day of Tolerance and government and the Tshwane metro must commit themselves to listen and find solutions to people’s concerns and to condemn looting and attacks on foreigners under the guise of service delivery protests.

Unpleasant first trip

Unhappy first timer writes: I recently went for my first Gautrain trip from Centurion to Sandton and to say I was appalled by the safety measures, would be a complete understatement. When the fourcarriage train arrived, a quick glance at the numerous folk planning to embark on the trip told my sinking heart there would be insufficient space inside. I learn that in European countries it has become quite acceptable to have little or no regard for safety measures but having paid a hefty price for the ticket, I would have liked to be seated. What happens in an emergency where a carriage is so packed you can hardly move? Honestly, I think the Gautrain should look at providing a better service structure over the weekends. We should not have to accept this.

Compost scammers hit again Johnny Mynhardt from Annlin writes: I was a victim of this scam and feel obligated to prevent this from happening to other residents. On Saturday afternoon a white pickup with a couple of compost bags on the back stopped in front of my house. The driver said he noticed that my grass had some grey patches and asked if they could fix it up with compost and fertilizer. I asked him the price and he said it was R85 for a 50kg bag and they will do all the work. I also asked how many bags would be needed and this is where the scam starts. He said that he was not sure but estimated two to five bags. We agreed and I tended to my dogs for five minutes. When I returned they were busy raking the fertilizer over the grass. In the corner lay a heap of empty fertilizer bags. I asked about the empty bags and he said they had emptied 28 bags on my lawn. That

Coming of age Paradox Pless wishes he was born in another era. This rushed modern life of the Stone Age is not for sissies. When someone said that this year, julle gaan klippe kou, they meant it literally. He knows his history well and is aware that there were eras when living was slow and easy and one could spend one’s day strolling around a beautiful garden and keep oneself busy by naming animals. How difficult can that be? How many times can one name a ‘lion’ a ‘lion’ or a ‘tiger’ a ‘tiger’? One guy tried to make it interesting by bringing some variation into it, by naming one a ‘Bengal tiger’ the other an ‘Indian tiger’ or ‘white tiger’. But his wife said he was being racist. Even then there was trouble brewing in paradise. The wife was having an affair with a real snake of a guy who was peddling fruit and drugs and who persuaded her to try boom. But the present age was getting to him. The company he worked for, Stone Implements Inc was starting to retrench people because they could not afford to keep up with new technology. Iron implements were all the rage now and countries, like China, were starting to dump iron on their market. The new-world rulers, the Neanderthals, were trying to change the name of Pless’ city to Gondwanaland. Imagine bringing up his two hundred children without a sense of history and permanency and forever moving about like a continent adrift. Things around him were changing quickly. If you took too long to make a decision you might be in for a surprise. Like the leader of the Gondwana Youth League. He and his followers decided to claim and expropriate a piece of land, which he claimed was ancestral land.

Documentary film sheds light on the border war Natashia Hudson Edward Jardim, a Pretoria based videographer with a passion for history, recently produced his second video documentary, Assault on Cassinga, on the controversial airborne attack that took place on May 4, 1978 at Cassinga during the Angolan Border War. This DVD is a follow-up on the documentary, Attack on Cassinga, which was also produced by Jardim and released in 2009. Jardim, who received no major funding and handled all the creative processes himself, spent most of his spare time during the last two years putting his latest war documentary together. The video documentary revolves around the first full-scale

airborne attack that the South African Defence Force carried out. The target of the air raid was a South West African People’s Organisation (Swapo) base in Cassinga, Angola. The 60-minute documentary features exclusive interviews with Lieutenant General Denis Earp (former chief of the South African Airforce 1984-1988) and Lieute nant General Jannie Geldenhuys (former chief of the South African Airforce 1986-1990). It also features exclusive interviews with helicopter pilot, Brigadier General John Church and fighter pilots, Major General MJ du Plessis and Lieutenant Colonel Dries Marais. The DVD provides a detailed

account on the role that the South African Airforce played during the dramatic attack. According to Jardim he did not want to become entangled in the controversy and politics surroun ding the battle that took place that day, (Swapo claimed the site targeted by the South African Airforce was a refugee camp), but wanted to give soldiers the opportunity to tell their stories. He said he would love to make a third documentary as told from Swapo’s perspective, but is having difficulty getting hold of the right people. Jardim feels there is currently a shortage of South African war video documentaries and hopes that his video documentaries will help to fill this gap.

Schutte en De Jager verdien al die afgelope drie jaar hulle brood en botter met professionele skoonmaak van misdaadtonele regoor die land. Hul maatskappy, Crime Scene Cleanup, het elf takke regoor die land en is een van slegs vier maatskappy in Suid-Afrika wat onder meer selfmoord-, gesinsmoord- en plaasmoordtonele skoonmaak. Die prentjie van seep, ’n emmer water en ’n bietjie was en vee is egter ver verwyderd van die intensiewe en soms senutergende skoonmaakprosesse wat deel van hierdie bedryf uitmaak. Nie net is die regte chemikalieë, uitrustings en toerusting noodsaaklik nie, maar ook hope durf, deernis, waagmoed en uithouvermoë. Die susters het onlangs hul

Sy het ook haar bewondering vir die susters uitgespreek en hul moed en menslikheid geprys. “Jy kan nie hierdie werk doen as jy nie jou naaste liefhet nie. Al die geld in die wêreld is regtig nie genoeg om dié werk te doen nie.” Schutte en De Jager het hart verskeurende en skreeusnaakse verhale gedeel. Schutte het ook oor die uitdagings wat hulle soms in die gesig staar gepraat en wat hulle motiveer om aan te gaan. “Dit is ’n moeilike werk, maar uiteindelik trek ons geloof ons deur. Die dankbaarheid wat ons van mense kry maak dit die moei te werd. Ons sal geen ander werk wil doen nie Ons glo regtig God het hierdie werk vir ons gegee om ’n verskil te kan maak.” Bloedsusters beloof om ’n aangrypende verhaal te wees van twee susters wat daagliks met humor en waagmoed ’n werk wat letterlik bloed, sweet en trane kos, aanpak.

Inwoner perdfris en gesond op 86 Natashia Hudson Ben van Heerden, ’n inwoner van Wolmer, is op 86-jarige ouderdom perdfris en gesond en oefen sowat drie keer per week vir twee ure aaneen. Hy het ongeveer vier maande gelede sy 86e verjaarsdag gevier en is op dié rype ouderdom bekend in die buurt vir sy jong voorkoms, wakker verstand en oefensessies wat voor in sy erf plaasvind. Van Heerden, wat 22 jaar gelede afgetree het, oefen omtrent elke tweede dag al die spiere in sy liggaam op ’n oefenapparaat wat soortgelyk aan ’n trapfiets is. Die oefensessies het al ’n instelling in die buurt geword en die kinders van die omgewing staan gereeld voor die hek as Van Heerden oefen om hom aan te moedig. Sy vrou, Leonor, het vertel dat

hy vir geen oomblik stilsit nie en dit vreeslik geniet om in sy werkswinkel en tuin te werskaf. Sy het met ’n vonkel in die oog gesê dat hy daarvan hou om sy bure te help en dat daar gereeld sleurwerkies in en om die weduwees se huise is wat verrig moet word. Van Heerden, wie se oudste agterkleinkind onlangs 21 geword het, het gesê dat hy nog nooit sigarette gerook het of ’n drankie gedrink het nie en in die laaste tien jaar geen ernstige gesondheidspro bleme gehad het nie. Hy skryf sy gesondheid toe aan genade en sê dat hy sy kant bring. “Die voertuig wat hierdie siel dra het ek van bo gekry, maar ek moet die wiele regmaak.” Van Heerden wil graag mense inspireer om ’n gesonde lewenstyl te handhaaf en so hulle lewensgehalte te verhoog. “Ek soek nie

Elke hond kry sy dag Natalie Grobler Die verhaal van Aspoestertjie het ’n werklikheid geword in Pretoria. Dit kom na Ditchy, die eens verwaarloosde Afrikanishond, van ’n ashoop na ’n paleis verhuis het. Ditchy se hartseerverhaal het ’n paar maande gelede in Silverton begin toe sy in ’n onbedekte mangat gekry is. Die Silverton-brandweer en Waltloo DBV het haar uit die gat gered en sy is vir ontwatering en skok behandel. Sedertdien was sy by die DBV woonagtig en het gesukkel om ’n huis te kry totdat Johann

Johann Human saam met sy vyf honde, Pustache (Labrador), Snowy (Switserse herdershond), Zeus (Napolitaanse boerboel), Ditchy (Afrikanis) en Mtsatsi (boerboel). Die Human-gesin het Ditchy op 15 Oktober aangeneem na sy vir maande sonder ’n familie was.

Human Rekord deurgeblaai het. Human, die ridder op ’n wit perd van Waterkloof, het Ditchy se verhaal gelees en vir sy vrou Mara gesê dat hulle haar moet aanneem. “Ek het op die berig oor Ditchy afgekom en was verstom dat niemand haar wou aanneem nie. Dit is toe dat ons besluit het om haar een van ons eie te maak,” het hy gesê. Op 15 Oktober het Ditchy na haar nuwe huis verhuis. Volgens Human is sy nog baie besitlik en van die eerste dag af wou sy niks weet dat die ander honde naby Human kom nie. “Sy is heelwat rustiger noudat sy reeds ’n paar dae by ons is en ons leer haar dat ons nie meer liefde gee vir die een as vir die ander een nie. Sy is jaloers op Mtsatsi (’n boerboel) en weier dat sy alleen op ons bed slaap. Hulle albei slaap saam met my en my vrou op ons bed,” het hy gesê. Die gesin van sewe bestaan uit Human en sy vrou Mara, Mtsatsi, Zeus (’n Napolitaanse boerboel), Snowy (’n Switserse herdershond), Pustache (’n Labrador) en Ditchy (’n Afrikanis). Human het gesê dat vier van sy honde optelhonde is en dat Mtsatsi die enigste hond is wat hy gekoop het. Hy het gesê dat al sy honde ewe veel bederf word en dat daar nie een is wat bo die ander uitstaan nie. “Elkeen het sy eie bed, word gereeld gebad, kry lekkernye en baie liefde. Ons het die afgelope sewe jaar nie met vakansie gegaan nie omdat ons die honde het. As mense nie na ons toe kom vir Kersfees en Nuwejaar nie, dan vier ons dit alleen saam met ons diere,” het hy gesê. Hy het gesê dat hulle almal gelukkig is dat Ditchy nou een van die gesin is en dat sy ’n lang en gelukkige lewe saam met hulle sal hê. Volgens Human het Ditchy reeds baie vordering gemaak in die kort rukkie wat sy saam met hulle bly.

Residents can show their support for Rekord’s Jeans 5 000 project by visiting The Grove Mall until October 28 to donate old or new denims for the Rekord Charity Fund. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. Showing their support are celebs (in front) Angelique Gerber, Eagan Williamson and Izak Davel. At the back are Loui Fish, Gretha Wiid and Esti.

Old blue jeans can help Denims are a fashion statement in most wardrobes, but many underprivileged adults and children do not have this luxury and therefore Rekord, together with The Grove Mall, will be hosting a Denim Drive promotion during October in aid of charity. Collecting denims for charity is Rekord’s brainchild and they aim to collect more than 5 000 pieces of clothing from October to December. The Grove Mall, who proudly associates themselves with an array of community projects, grasped the opportunity to host the Denim Drive promotion in conjunction with the newspaper. Schools in the area have been contacted to participate and to open their hearts and wardrobes by dona ting denim clothing. Tyger Valley College, one of the participating schools, is very excited about the project and hopes to make a difference within the community. The Grove Mall has also partnered with the local radio station, Impact Radio.

She said they are extremely dedicated to projects such as the Denim Drive promotion and urges businesses and shoppers to open their hearts and donate any unwanted denim clothing in good condition. Residents still have an opportunity to donate their denims until October 28 at various collection bins within the mall. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. The contestants were carefully selected and will be judged on beauty from within, displaying friendliness, caring and considerate traits, natural beauty and whether she is charity oriented and driven. Miss Charity will have to commit to initiate and involve herself further in charity drives, with a minimum of ten hours in 2012, which must include evidence of her involvement. Matt Stern, wat die rol van korporaal Kotzé vertolk, het met Rekord gesels oor wat Tree Aan so ’n suksesvolle produksie maak. “Daar is min dinge wat mense so ruk soos die swaar tye. Deon Opperman is ’n vervaardiger wat weet hoe om ’n gehoor te bekoor en in die siel rond te dolwe. Met Tree Aan het hy weer geslaag om ons op ons voete te bring,” vertel Stern, wat self ’n pad deur die weermag gestap het. Dit is sy eie ervaring wat bydra tot sy vertolking van korporaal Kotzé. “Ek het ’n tawwe korporaal gehad. Wel, almal het ’n tawwe korporaal gehad en dis vir my lekker om met die gehoor te speel, die interaksie wat ek ervaar op die verhoog. “Party klap hande, ander lag senuweeagtig. Korporaal Kotzé is so geskryf dat hy die troepe én die gehoor onder sy gesag neem.” Stern het gesê dit is die bekendheid van die situasie wat mense so aangryp van sy karakter. “Ons almal ken ’n korporaal Kotzé. Mense assosieer met hom en dit dra by tot die personifikasie van die rol en die genot wat ek op die verhoog ervaar.” Hy is ook van mening dat dit die fyn nuanse van die karakters is wat die gehore aand na aand bekoor. “Ons weet goed dat die gehoor uit verskillende ouderdomme

bestaan, tog is die regie so goed dat die storie aanklank by alle SuidAfrikaners vind, ongeag of hulle diensplig gedoen het of nie.” Natuurlik kan gehore ook topgehalte stelontwerp en musiek verwag. Stern meen dit kan aan die geselskap se uitmuntende vervaardigers en sy mede jong akteurs se talente toegeskryf word. “Die manne is jonk, maar ’n gebrek aan talent het hulle beslis nie. Daar is tans gehalte vervaardigers soos Opperman wat goeie stukke skryf en dan is daar bevoegde akteurs wat die stewels volstaan.” Stern is al die afgelope 15 jaar in die bedryf en bied ook privaat opleiding aan by ’n tuisteater. “Ek is oorspronklik van Centurion. Former schoolteacher, Zodwa Mabena, left her job as a teacher to follow her dream of becoming a musician. She was born in Allemansdrift, Kwa Ndebele and is a graduate from Trinity College of Music.

On November 18 it is the turn of Carlo Mombeli and Medleko Meropa. Carlo Mombeli started his professional music career with the Johnny Fourie and Duke Makasi group as well as leading his own ensemble, Abstractions, recording with Shifty Records. He left South Africa in 1987 and recorded and performed around the world. Catch Pops Mohamed and Rudolph Mamabolo on November 25. Pops Mohamed is a living legend in South Africa. His impact is felt in various spheres of the country’s output, from traditional through to contemporary and experimental music. Koor laat hul stem hoor

Die Musique Mosaique-koor het op 8 Oktober hul tiende bestaansjaar met ’n reüniekonsert by die Voortrekkermonument gevier. Hannelize du Plessis het die koor in 2001 as die Gauteng Jeugkoor gestig. Soos die koorlede ouer geword het, is daar besluit om die Gauteng Jeugkoor se naam te verander na Musique Mosaique. In 2009 het Gerhard Pienaar leiding van die koor oorgeneem en hy het die reüniekonsert gelei. “Dit was ongelooflik om ons erfenis te kon vier by een van die grootste erfenisse van ons land, die Voortrekkermonument,” het Pienaar gesê. Musique Mosaique se reper-

toire is uiteenlopend en sluit A Cappella asook begeleide werke in. Die koor streef daarna om verskeie musiek genres in hul repertoire te dek, om so almal in die gehoor te akkommodeer. ’n Groot deel van die repertoire bestaan uit geestelike werke wat meestal gedurende kerkdienste gesing word, maar die koorlede geniet dit ook om ligte musiek uit te voer. Vanjaar het die koor nie net tien jaar oud geword nie, maar het ook verskeie hoogtepunte behaal. Die koor het aan die ATKVAnimato-koorkompetisie deelgeneem waar hulle as streekswenner van Gauteng, asook nasionale kategoriewenner in die volwasse-

koorafdeling aangewys is. Musique Mosaique het ook hulle stem dik gemaak gedurende die jaar en saam met Salon Musiek, Der Zigeunerbaron, in die Brooklyn-teater aangebied. Die koor het die geleentheid gekry om saam met verskeie soliste, onder andere Richard Linde, Magdaleen Minnaar en Kathy Neuland, om’n paar te noem in die Strauss-operette te sing. Tribute to the music legend Johnny Cash A pilgrimage is a journey made to a place as a gesture of respect. With this in mind, five musicians convened earlier this year to find out exactly where that place was. Their subject matter was an artist who filled his 70 years on earth with a staggering amount of music. The Man in Black was there for the birth of Rockabilly in the 1950’s, sharing the stage with the likes of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and others. He soldiered on for another five decades, the eternal rebel, forever at odds with the corporate record industry and other authoritative figures. The eighties were not exactly kind to him but his American recordings project brought him back to prominence and served as a fitting farewell for a man who touched many a life. Johnny Cash, as his famous song suggests, did indeed stand up for the unlucky, the reckless ones, the poor and the beaten down.

While the show features some of his later work, the Johnny Cash Pilgrimage felt that the bulk of the performance should consist of the now signature Tennessee Threesound, that wonderful music most famously documented on the Live at Folsom Prison album. This period featured songs about love, hardship, hope, joy, trains, prisoners, cowboys, good and bad women and of course the odd serious crime and the inevitable consequence of such actions. All the members of the band are Johnny Cash fans and consider the show to be a labour of love. A lot of effort has gone into recreating that magical era and the sound that influenced many a musical journey, including their own. The 90-minute set includes highlights that will please both the casual fan and Cash connoisseurs. Therefore, whether you saw the movie and fell in love with Ring of Fire or discovered The wreck of

the old 97 in your parent’s record collection, the band guarantees a good night out on the tiles. The journey ends when everyone feels better about themselves. Was that not the great man’s intention all along? Andy Evans and Brixton Barnard supply the no nonsense solid backbeat on drums and bass while Pat Plank and Erika Strydom compliment each other’s styles with some brilliant guitar work. Strydom also fills the shoes of the legendary June Carter. Stepping up to the mike is Gert Barnard, a man who has lived and breathed Johnny Cash for most of his life. He bears a striking resemblance to the man in question. The Johnny Cash Pilgrimage tours the country extensively over the next year and will soon be in Pretoria. Break the law in 3,3 seconds in new supercar Robert Mabusela With Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele’s proposed speed limit of 100km/h one could be breaking the law within 3,3 seconds if one drives the new McLaren MP4-12c. This rear engine lightweight McLaren promises to be the ‘first genuine no compromise sportscar’ according to McLaren brochures at the Johannesburg International Motor Show recently. The MP412c deserves to be called a supercar, as 200km/h is reached in 9,8 seconds or 8,9 if the car is fitted with Corsa tyres, which will play an essential role in reaching the top speed of 330km/h a bit faster.

You’ve ticked all the right boxes when it comes to making sure that everything is in place for that end of year holiday, but can you say the same for your tyres? Tyre safety may not be as exciting as splashing out on your 100th pair of designer shoes, but it is well worth the time and money. After all, failing to make sure your vehicle has the right ‘shoes’ can turn your dream holiday into a roadside disaster. Just like the heels of your shoes, tyres have tread that wears down with driving. The more worn your tyres, the less traction and grip you will have on the road, meaning your braking distance will increase and you are more likely to skid when driving in the rain. In fact, the legal tread depth limit in South Africa is a minimum of 1mm across the entire circumference of the tyre. If you are not sure whether you are legal, ask a wheel and tyre professional to point out the tread wear indicators on your tyres. Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can be fashion suicide or just plain unpleasant. The right tyre pressure can also be the difference between life and death. Don’t assume the pressure is two bars, which many women do when they chant ‘two please’ to the friendly petrol attendant. Each vehicle has recommended pressures which you will find in the sill of the driver’s door or inside the fuel cap. Rather take the time to check these and make sure the pressure is correct. Over inflated tyres erode quickly at their centre, while under inflated tyres wear on the outsides quicker. Under inflated tyres overheat easily and can cause tyre bursts, which is notorious for road fatalities.

Every fashionista knows to keep a spare pair of shoes in the boot of their car in case of a mishap. Before you get on your way, also check that you have a spare tyre and that it is inflated to the right pressure and has the right amount of tread, at least 1mm, for a safe journey. If your vehicle is fitted with run-flat tyres you won’t have a spare. Staying in your lane is a basic rule, but neglecting the balancing and alignment of your wheels can make you lose your step. If your vehicle is shaking or pulling to one side while driving, you need to get your wheels balanced and aligned. Sometimes it’s very subtle so make sure you check your wheel balancing and alignment every 10 000km or before every major trip. This not only improves the handling of your vehicle but also extends the tread life of your tyres. The more care you take to look after your tyres, the longer they will last, which means you have more money to spend on your summer wardrobe. These are just some of the basics for keeping your tyres in check and staying safe on the road. Invest in retirement Research anticipates that close on ten million South Africans will be retiring in the next 25 years. The results of the Sanlam 2011 Benchmark Pensioner Survey indicate that 80% of pensioners have not completely achieved their predetermined retirement goals. On average, 31% of the pensioners believe they have not saved enough for their capital to last for the rest of their lives and 33% of members currently have a monthly shortfall between their income and expenses. Adrian Goslett, CEO of Remax of Southern Africa, said it has been widely reported the South African retirement industry is under constant pressure to deliver adequate and sustainable benefits to its pensioners. Local retirement reform is on the cards once more. It cannot be emphasised enough that people need to start working towards their retirement fund as soon as possible. He pointed to research from the Sanlam 2011 Benchmark Pensioner Survey where pensioners were very clear in their advice to start investing and saving as early as possible. Start planning for retirement at an early age and make more enquiries and learn more about investments, investment choices and retirement. “Property has always been a solid performing, long-term investment and therefore could be an ideal investment vehicle for those looking to add another element to their retirement policies and investments,” he said. He explains that if a person had to retire at 65 years of age, they will need 75% of the income earned when working to enable

them to live a comfortable life. “Added to this, the income stream needs to be sustainable enough to last at least 30 or so years, given the current life expectancy statistics.” There are many investment options available for those who are looking to start building up a retirement portfolio, including saving mechanisms and various retirement plans. A well researched and solid property investment should also be considered as a key element of a retirement portfolio, as real estate remains one of the best performing asset classes, despite the recession and its effects on current property prices and demand. “This is because real estate investments offer diversity from the other alternatives that typically make up a retirement portfolio,” said Goslett. Added to this, performance of real estate is not linked to other asset classes, which means that property investors can still benefit from their real estate purchase when other asset classes are struggling. Buying a property also offers investors long-term appreciation opportunities and the potential for the property to contribute to a regular income stream. Goslett said there are two ways in which an established property portfolio can benefit retirees. One is an investment property retirees can use to generate an additional income. “The buy to let market, for example, is currently performing well considering that rental demand is strong. Tenants in buy to let properties can provide a stable income stream for retirees. Investment properties can also be sold to provide for a lump sum cash injection to retirement funds.”

Koos Venter Die oud-Springbok en Bloubulkaptein en losskakel, Naas Botha, is terug in rugbyafrigting met ’n langtermyn doelwit. Botha het verlede week aangekondig dat hy van volgende seisoen betrokke sal wees by rugbyafrigting by Hoërskool Water kloof. Hy sal nie ’n spesifieke span afrig nie, maar sal al die afrigters bystaan en ook veral aandag aan spelers se individuele vaardighede gee. Botha, wat vroeër by die Pretoria rugbyklub afgerig het en ook as direkteur van afrigting by die Valke bedrywig was, het gesê hy sien die geleentheid wat hy by Waterkloof kry as ’n manier om terug te kom

in die afrigtingsbedryf. Hy het erken dat hy langtermyn planne het in hierdie verband. Hoewel hy reeds op ’n baie hoër vlak betrokke was, het Botha gesê hy sien daarna uit om met skoolseuns te werk. “’n Mens moet iewers weer begin en waar beter as by ’n skool soos Waterkloof,” het Botha gesê. Hy het ook sy teleurstelling uitgespreek oor skinderstories dat hy skole soos Water kloof en Garsfontein teen mekaar afgespeel het ter wille van geldelike gewin. “Ek het met albei skole gepraat en die saak sonder emosie probeer opweeg. Daarna het ek ’n rugbybesluit geneem. Daar was geen sprake van ’n oorkopery nie,” was Botha se antwoord aan die stigters van die skinderstories.

Suid-Afrika het die eerste eendag internasionale wedstryd teen Australië op SuperSportpark in Centurion met 93 lopies verloor, nadat die eerste somerreën Woensdagaand oor dié voorstad uitgesak het. Die wedstryd is vir byna vier ure vertraag en toe spel uiteindelik kort na agtuur eers weer moontlik was, is die wedstryd tot 29 boulbeurte aan ’n kant verkort.

Nadat Australië 183 lopies vir vier paaltjies aangeteken het, moes Suid-Afrika volgens mnre Duckworth en Lewis 223 lopies in 29 beurte jaag om te wen. Hulle is egter almal uitgehaal vir slegs 129 lopies, met die Titans-speler, Faf du Plessis, wat die hoogste telling van 27 kon slaan. Gelukkig het Suid-Afrika die bordjies verhang deur die afgelope naweek in Port Elizabeth in die tweede wedstryd met 80 lopies te wen. Nog ’n Titans-ster, Morné Morkel, is in Port Elizabeth as man-van-die-wedstryd aangewys, nadat hy vier Aussies uitgehaal het in tien boulbeurte terwyl hy net 22 lopies afgestaan het.

Garry Kasparov, World Chess Champion for eight years and the world’s top rated player for 21 years, is coming to South Africa from Moscow in November. This special occasion is part of a joint venture with the Pretoria-based chess educational project Moves for Life (MFL). President Jacob Zuma is the patron of Moves for Life. Kasparov announced that he wishes to link his Kasparov Chess Foundation to MFL to take the successful MFL formula to other African countries. He has added that he plans to work with MFL to make Johannesburg the chess capital of Africa. Kasparov said he was greatly inspired by the words of President Zuma last October, when he spoke so movingly on the many benefits of chess for children. He said he was happy to join Zuma and

the South African Moves for Life programme in a commitment to bring chess to schools across the country and for turning Johannesburg into the continental chess capital. Kasparov will be visiting South Africa as the guest of MFL from November 12 to 15 to promote the Kasparov Chess Foundation link up with the Moves for Life programme. Mickey Scheepers, MFL operations manager, said the game of chess impacts positively on maths, science and comprehension abilities, while also imparting valuable life skills to children. In learning to play chess, children are mastering a wide range of skills such as pattern recognition, classifying information, reasoning by analogy, following principles, calculating possible sequences of events and critical thinking.

Hoewel die Blou Bulle se Curriebekerspan vir die eerste keer in 10 jaar nie daarin kon slaag om vir die halfeind rondte van die Curriebekerreeks te kwali fiseer nie, het die unie se twee junior spanne Vrydagaand vir ’n troosprys gesorg toe beide spanne na eerskomende Saterdag se eindwedstryde van hul ligas deurgedring het. Paul Anthony se o.19’s en Nollis Marais se o.21’s sal eerskomende Saterdag alles gee om weer die twee junior trofeë in Loftus Versfeld se effens leë vertoonkas staan te maak. Albei die Bulle se junior spanne het vanjaar heel bo aan die punteleer geëindig. Hulle sal eerskomende naweek alles in die stryd werp om die glipse van die afgelope paar seisoene reg te maak en weer die ligbloues se oorheersing van junior rugby te onderstreep. Verlede jaar het albei die spanne in hul onderskeie eindwedstryde teen die WP vasgeval, maar vanjaar is daar geen teken

van die streeptruie in die eindstryde nie. Die Bulle se o.19-span speel Saterdag teen die Leeus, terwyl die o.21’s die Sharks se juniors sal aandurf. Die o.19-span, onder leiding van die voormalige SA-skole kaptein, William Small-Smith, het die jong Cheetahs Vrydagaand maklik met 48-13 geklop. Die Bulletjies se opwindende hardloop rugby was een te veel vir die Vrystaters en hulle het uiteindelik ses drieë teen die Cheetahs se een aangeteken. In die o.21-wedstryd is die patroon herhaal, met die enigste verskil dat die teenstanders die jong Leeus was. Curriebeker-staatmakers wat steeds o.21-spelers is, soos CJ Stander, Arno Botha, Louis Fouché en Francois Venter het ’n groot verskil vir die jong Bulle gemaak. Hoewel Fouché ’n bietjie gesukkel het met sy korrelwerk na die pale, het hy steeds 17 punte met die skoen aangeteken. Stander, Botha en Venter het elk ’n drie gedruk as hul aandeel vir die helfte van die span se ses drieë.
